In the dark and dystopian future world of Pandorica, The Varosha Tribe needs a new leader.  Three are chosen.  Only one can survive.

Pandorica is the edge of your seat new movie from The Film Label.  A true indie epic that will grip you tight and drag you kicking and screaming through the pitch black forests of this new hellish world.

Shot on a shoestring budget and going from initial conception to theatrical release in only a year, Director Tom Paton and his team have created what is arguably one of the finest indie movies I have ever seen.

We recently met up with Tom and had a chat with him about Pandorica, his film making style and how he managed to create such a stunning movie on such a tight budget.

***** If you like what you see and would like to win some great Merch then Tom has given us some Pandorica swag to give-away; check below for more details *****

On how Pandorica came to be;

“In 2016 it is not good enough to just be a director anymore.  It is not good enough to say ‘oh I know what the story is in my head’ you need to know how to use the equipment, so that really influenced the making of the film because I knew we weren’t going to have a lot of money, and, i was making a different film and we had gone down a traditional route and had spoken to a hollywood sales agent and we were looking at a big budget and it was like George RR Martin in that ‘winter is coming’ but it never did. And I got really frustrated with that and thought that the industry as a whole needed a bit of a kick in the ass.

At the independent level I kinda feel that we have ended up with the 1% and the 99% where films are either uber expensive or uber dirt cheap and that cool middle ground of 5 million or 10 million films, like our cult classics have sort of vanished and have been replaced with stuff that they definitely feel that is going to make them a profit because they are not willing to spend that 5 million anymore on a risk which means that filmmakers like me at the real bottom end that would typically go off and make a gangster film or ‘hey two guys wake up in a car park’ need to look at ways to push those boundaries.

So I started a company called Film Label.  A marketing and distribution company. The idea was to create a product that looked really expensive, for not a lot of money, and could find a big audience and then try to bypass the system and almost get all the benefits you would from being a studio release without actually being a studio release.  That was eleven months ago.  So, eleven months ago I said ‘no problem I will go and write something’ .

I wrote Pandorica last May, so it didn’t even exist this time last year, and that was out of frustration and when I was writing it I was very much thinking about the tech that was available to us that I thought we could utilise to maximise budget and this Camera, the Sony A7S was there and my original background is that people call me the ‘low light guy’ if you need something filmed in low light go get Tom Paton and he will do that for you.  So I was like ‘lets put that into the movie’ so I set the whole thing at night and we utilised this camera and we shot an insane level of low light that noone ever does anymore.”

PANDORICA1

On Lighting the Movie;

“We only had two lights on the whole movie.  One light we had was a typical 5k powerful film light but on a normal set you might end up with, particularly on a night time shoot, you would end up with maybe twenty or thirty of those lights and we had one.  We used the big light to sort of backlight the forest if you will, then we had one LED Panel which wasn’t very bright at all and normally in films you can get these big helium balloons that are like £2,000 a day to hire, so we needed to figure out a way to do that for ‘not’ £2,000 a day so we bought two wedding balloons that the bride walks around with and they were like £30.00 each and we filled them full of helium and tied it to the LED Panel and bounced the light off the balloon and what that did was give us this portable moonlight.

We have all seen low budget films set at night and it is blatantly daylight and they have just gone ‘oh here is a blue filter’ but it was important for me that Pandorica actually was dark.  And I think that because of the way we shot it, it has got this aesthetic that is in keeping with the tone.  I don’t know whether that will catch on or not but I am already kinda in love with the way it looks so my next movie takes a lot of lessons I have learned from this one like ‘never play with fire on set’.  It is a continuity nightmare so we will be replacing that with LED suits so the next movie will be sort of like ‘Tron meets Running Man’, all outdoors, with a similar sort of look.”

PANDORICA3

On Effects;

“We could have done the CGI route and it would have been cheaper actually but for me it was about trying to capture that practicality of it you know?  We did try a few scenes where we put in shots of the ‘old’ world.  Like ruins and stuff.  Dont get me wrong, they looked fine you know but in my head I just (and I felt really sorry for the effects guys who had spent weeks and weeks putting these shots together) I just couldn’t lose the first version where they weren’t there and then we just settled into this groove i mean the film is set like generations after the world has been wiped out and these people actively stay away from the old world so the whole idea was lets only show sporadic parts of it and keep it away and that will help me develop the story later on.

Perhaps we will develop a third film where the Old World is the point and we can explore that as a mythology but coming from a budget perspective I mean, we could have done it, but we would have ended up with that Sci-Fi channel feel and which, again, I like a good crap movie personally but I just felt it was important to just keep it as stripped and bare as possible really.”
PANDORICA4

On Budgets and Funding;

“When I wrote the script I actually wrote it for a £20,000 budget and we had sourced the locations and costumes and stuff and everyone initially was working for free.  Then, a company called Mirror came in and said that they would give us a bit more money and what happened then was that people got paid.  Everyone but me.  But not a lot either.  A lot of people were working for token fees and because they really believed in the project.

Even with that amount of money though, twelve days.  The whole film was shot in twelve days and we were out of cash.  On a normal film you will shoot maybe half a page a day, at a push maybe a page.  We were doing eleven pages a day to stay on schedule and that is way more than TV as well so I think Pandorica proves that we can go at speed.”

“The whole point of the Film Label as a business model is that we essentially co-opted the music industry model from 2009.  These guys back then were like ‘sod the way Sony do it, lets do it our own way’.  The Music industry found a way to take people making music on their laptop at home and turn them into big hits by making these small record labels and I think that The Film Labels point is to become a small digital studio and that to me means that you need to embrace things like Amazon and Netflix you know.  I would be just as happy to see my film on someone’s phone on a bus as on the big screen.  And, we were never intending to go to Cinema so the fact that we ran in Cinemas for two weeks straight and have got a US theatrical run is proper crazy.

On Piracy.

“Oh, you mean people stealing the movie?  I think it is time for film makers to just get real.  You just cannot fight a wave of change.  This happened to the music industry and is part of why the music industry changed its model to incorporate subscription based services and they tried all sorts of smart things which is something you will see when we release on Amazon and iTunes and stuff you will see that what we are doing is that when you buy the movie you get it for download and for stream and you also get a collectors Vinyl DVD.

It is basically a DVD but inside a 12″ vinyl sleeve and every vinyl sleeve is numbered and the idea is that, yeah you can go and pirate the film, that is fine, but at the same time there is something in it for you as a consumer if you come and get it legit. But I think that trying to fight that wave of change is just impossible.  You just have to accept it as part of your model in that some people are going to steal it but maybe they will love it and really want that collectors vinyl and that is why they will come back and buy it.

You need to give people a reason to want to buy your stuff and I think that the film industry has got to a place where it was almost ok for them to be super greedy.  You know, come to the Cinema and pay £20.00 to watch Avengers, and that is all you are getting, and you might end up sitting next to someone who just talks through the whole thing and then when it comes out on DVD, lets not adjust our DVD prices or give people the VOD or anything.  Things in the industry are changing though and the independent market needs to do the same.  We are being open with it though in saying ‘look, have the download, which you will probably put on Pirate Bay, but you will also get the stream and you will also get this collectors item that is yours as in it is your own unique piece of the film.”
PANDORICA2

In the Future;

“I have had a few offers to do other peoples scripts because I wrote this one as well.  I mean, I didn’t have very long to write it and I look at Pandorica and I mean, I wrote the whole thing in three weeks.  And then it was finished and I was like ‘lets go into pre-production’ which was probably bonkers and I feel that we are fortunate that we ended up with such a decent film.

“For the future.  I am interested in doing some TV work to get some pay cheques because I have proven that I can work at insane speeds but I am also interested in going back and doing this again. “

Tom Paton was speaking to Chris, Pete and Jen from Geek Pride.

Pandorica is on limited Theatrical release in the UK, on VOD and coming soon to Amazon and iTunes.

After several years Our Valued Customers comes to an end

0

The end times are here, Our Valued Customers has come to an end. You might be thinking “Our Valued Customers, huh what’s that?” but if you’re on social media, or spend any time on the internet really, chances are you’re familiar with the work of cartoonist Tim Chamberlain even if you don’t know you are given the nature of the internet.

Since 2010 Chamberlain has been creating humorous and generally painfully accurate and cartoons based on the occasionally cringe worthy wisdom of comics fans he encountered whilst working in in a comic shop. The upcoming end was announced via the “Final 50” image posted in February with today marking the end with the below image being posted on Our Valued Customers site and social media. Chamberlain hasn’t announced what his future plans are yet but you can be sure it’ll be something worth checking out.

Whilst Our Valued Customers may have come to an end you can still visit the website and buy OVC books amongst others at Chamberlain’s webshop.

Retr-Oh My – The New Look Mega Drive Collection

SEGA_MEGA_DRIVE_CLASSICS_LOGO

SEGA have held a special place in my heart since I first picked up a controller.

My first taste of console gaming was visiting my cousin and him kicking my butt on Street Fighter II, bearing in mind I was maybe 5 or 6 at the time and hadn’t mastered my sick skills yet, but still, my humiliation aside, I couldn’t help but be delighted at the sights and sounds in front of me as fireballs jumped from people’s hands, as planes blew up robots and as a little blue hedgehog ran around fighting a fat man with a ludicrous moustache.

It’s little wonder then that I’ve always thought fondly of SEGA as a company, and will always hold a soft spot for the classics from the Mega Drive days.

Over the past several years, SEGA have reissued their Mega Drive Classics over multiple formats, including on PC through Steam.
Very soon (April 28th), Steam will have access to a brand new central hub for the Mega Drive Collection, created by d3t and designed to look like every young gamer’s dream bedroom from the early 90s.

Unf. Look at that CRT.
Unf. Look at that CRT.

All of these existing Classics titles will be updated and remastered to be used through this new hub, with graphical enhancements, the ability to save states, local four player co-op and fully mapped keyboard and controller support.

All of your games come neatly arranged on this shelving unit
All of your games come neatly arranged on this shelving unit

But, most importantly, all of these Classics will now be supported by the Steam Workshop, meaning that the Steam community will be able to create mods.

Yes! That’s right! We can now make mods, for Mega Drive games. Do you have any idea what this means? Having experienced the joys of the modding community through the Steam workshop, this prospect has me more excited than a puppy with a new squeaky toy.
I can’t wait to see just what becomes available for the already extensive list of Classics available through Steam.

On top of this and and if that wasn’t good enough, to celebrate this new venture, the entire collection of Mega Drive Classics are currently on sale at 66% off their normal price!

I’d definitely suggest to anyone out there with thick rimmed nostalgia goggles that you need to check out these offers.

I’ll be expanding my collection.

In the meantime, I’ve been and shall remain,

The Read Pile – The GP Comics Blog #3

0

DSCF3484 (2)

Welcome to another edition of The Read Pile the GP comics blog where we’ll be talking about what we’ve been reading recently, what was good, what was bad, what you should be checking out and other randomness. Just like before other contributions are colour coded, whilst mine are black.

One of my top new finds is InSEXts from new publisher Aftershock, it’s written by Marguerite Bennett with art from Ariela Kristantina4945074-01 and you should go pick it up now, seriously. Aftershock have seemingly come out of nowhere and are putting out some quality stuff. InSEXts is probably one of the stranger things I’ve read, it’s set in the 19th century in London and it’s the story of Lady Bertram who is in an unhappy loveless marriage and her lover Mariah who is the house’s maid and also some sort of insectoid hybrid. There’s weirdness, body horror, steamy lesbian sex, scheming in laws and more besides. The art is great, the writing is unhinged.

Something else I got is Goldtiger which is pretty meta. The story behind the creation of comic strip Goldtiger, it’s one of the more bizarrely entertaining affairs you’re likely to read. So utterly convincing in its so mad it must be true way that it’s a little disappointing to realise that “Antonio Barreti” and “Louis Shaeffer” the creators of Goldtiger are in fact creations of artist Jimmy Broxton and writer Guy Adams.

Who wouldn’t want to read the adventures of Lilly Gold and Jack Tiger, gay fashion photographers/designers/secret agents in 60’s London?

Peter –

Judge Dredd: Titan is awesome.

So is that 2000AD then rather than IDW?

Peter –

Definitely 2000AD…

I picked up Brit-Cit Noir (Written by John Smith, Leah Moore, John Reppion, art by Colin MacNeil, Tom Foster) the other day and that’s brit_cit_noir_rebellion_covergood, with some impressively quirky stories totally different from the sort of thing you might associate with Judge Dredd. I like how Judge Dredd has expanded to this massive world full of characters that are doing their own thing in their own corner of the Dredd verse and you can read stuff without really having to read Judge Dredd previously.

Peter –

Agreed. Dredd stories are great stories in themselves but he is not always the most engaging character. I tend to prefer the Judge Armitage, Devlin Waugh and Judge Anderson stories.

One of my favourite books is The Simping Detective with Jack Point by Si Spurrier and Frazer Irving.

I also just picked up volume 3 of Rat Queens, which I cannot recommend enough. Not only does it avoid the common pitfall of being written and drawn with the male reader in mind, it’s also a great story about about a group of foul mouthed, badass, dangerous adventurers that happen to be women. The art by Tess Fowler and Tamra Bonvillain is great and the writing by Kurtis J. Wiebe is sublime. Rat Queens is one of few comics to actually make me laugh because it’s genuinely funny and deconstructs or makes fun of fantasy tropes, also it features some of favourite characters in comics. The fact it’s gone on “hiatus” is pretty depressing really.

Hellina about a badass executioner from Hell is something else I picked up. Boundless (an offshoot of Avatar) are bringing back Bad Girlboundless-comics-belladonna-issue-0e comics (which seems a little anachronistic I know) but despite some good art by Gabriel Andrade Hellina comes across like an unintentional parody of Bad Girl comics due to woefully bad writing from Jai Nitz, more on Hellina here. On the flip side Belladonna about a vicious Viking shield maiden in the 9th century by Mike Costa and Ignacio Calero is actually good, a bit like a way more intense Red Sonja with added brutal violence and sex magic and features a newly coloured back up story reprinting an earlier Belladonna comic by Brian Pulido and Raulo Caceres. Definitely niche appeal but the difference between the two is striking.

Callum –

Only had two things recently. Batman and Robin Eternal finally wrapped up which was fairly relieving. Wasn’t a bad series overall but I don’t think it really justified 26 issues, as cool as it was to have Cassandra Cain back in the universe. Then just today I got my pre order of Grant Morrison’s Wonder Woman: Earth One which is rather brilliant, if in a typically Morrison way. Interestingly it’s devised as largely drawing from the original Marston stuff.

I saw that, I have pretty much no frame of reference since I’ve never read any Wonder Woman but the art looked good. Grant Morrison seems to be rather hit and miss I think, The Invisibles and Doom Patrol are excellent as is All Star Superman but I really didn’t like his Batman stuff at all.

Callum –

2016-04-22_2046This is basically the first proper Wonder Woman thing I’ve read but I’ve got a lot of time for Morrison so I’ve given it a go. Like you I’ve got no real broader frame of reference so I’ve no idea how it fits more consistent fans view. But generally I like it. It’s a retelling of wonder woman and of the Amazons and it does pretty cool things with that retelling. The art (by Yanick Paquette) is also rather wonderful. In terms of Morrison generally I’ve always found that his stuff intrigues me even if it doesn’t necessarily fall into the category of things I like. His batman in particular did certain things I really liked while other things were interesting but didn’t really connect.

I’m sure I saw some histrionics, something to do with Wonder Woman being in chains is playing into male readers sexual fantasies or something and DC should be ashamed, etc, etc.

Callum –

Yeah, there’s this whole thing from the originating comics (I believe the name of her creator was William Marston) where she could be rendered powerless by being bound and there’s a lot of dubious shit about it originally. Because this is in some way drawing from and retelling elements of the Marston ideas, there are notions of the bondage stuff in there but I wouldn’t really say it’s male fantasy sexualisation in this.

The whole reason she’s in chains is (MILD SPOILERS) she’s on trial. There’s actually this notion of loving surrender and bondage worked into the amazon culture that I feel the book deals with pretty maturely

So are they special chains then I assume?

Callum –

Um they’re not really special chains, or at least not mentioned to be, though the lasso of truth is interestingly brought in by the trial. The2016-04-22_1155 idea is that Diana surrenders willingly because she believes in what she has to say and that her mother can be convinced. In an interesting moment, the Amazons are sort of portrayed as elitist, body shaming bitches. So there’s a sort of unusual approach to various aspects of femininity in the book

I figured it might be more of a symbolic thing, kind of like when Colossus went to prison and stayed there even though he could just bend the bars and walk straight out.

Callum –

Yeah, it’s an entirely voluntary surrender. The book very clearly shows in several moments how strong Diana is. The chaining of her is of her own volition, it’s symbolic like you say.

That’s it for this edition of The Read Pile, let us know what you’ve been reading, what was good, what was bad and what would you recommend?

Breaking Down the Independence Day Resurgence Trailer

independence-day-2-resurgence-title-treatment

As far as blockbusters go Independence Day stands up there with the best of them and even after twenty years its perfect mix of CGI and physical graphics still hold up.

Now in 2016, the city swatting aliens are back with a vengeance and here to rid the world of our popular tourist photo hotspots once and for all in the long awaited sequel Independence Day Resurgence.

Here’s what we’ve gathered from the trailer, which thankfully isn’t just some words on a screen.

ID4p2 is set in a universe created when the world was destroyed on the 2nd June 1996 (a Tuesday) and mankind fought back within 2 days and kicked ass with nothing but a MacBook and a barely sober Tom Arnold. Now it seems that in the relatively short space of twenty years humanity has seemingly been able to rebuild nearly every major city as well as add all the fun bits. Note the London Eye appearing in some of the scenes. How was this possible?!?! It’ll probably be explained by the use of Alien Technology which brings us on to our next point ….

xsg1qhrmccal4bjycuxh

Alien Technology

We’ve worked out that highly superior extra-terrestrial hardware can interface with our iPhones so we’ve integrated that with all their left over junk to make super space weapons. Logical if you’re gonna fight the bad guys again. The world also seems to adapted a lots of this tech into everyday life with giant jumbotrons. However the one thing that hasn’t dampened is the pure American jingoism with the red white and blue being flown on the back of these super fighters. Plenty there for collective f**k yeahs and fist pumps.

Old Faces

Sequels have to have some continuity about them and Independence Day Resurgence has a few of our favourites back in action. Jeff Goldblum is reprising his role as cable repair man come saviour of the world as is Bill Pullman as a haggard former president looking more like a later day Al Gore. Heck they’ve even got Brent Spiner (aka Data from Star Trek Next Gen) as the crazy Area 51 scientist who looked pretty dead in the last film but is now back to life. Judd Hirsch is thankfully still with us and is in the film too playing Goldblum’s dad who in IMHO has the best line in the first ID4 (“All you need is love. John Lennon. Smart man. Shot in the back, very sad.”) Perhaps the two most notable omissions are Will Smith whom the writers have conveniently killed off as part of the films backstory (perhaps he cost too much!?!) and Mae Whitman who played the presidents young daughter in the first film. Who’s Mae Whitman I hear you ask? Well aside from that little fun fact she’s now quite an established actress in her own right with memorable roles as “Bland” Anne in TV’s Arrested Development and Roxy Richter in Scott Pilgrim v The World to name a few. According to various sources online Whitman wasn’t even considered for the role with no reason given for her omission. Bad call Hollywood. Bad call.

IndependenceDay2_trailer

So will it be as good as the first? Who can say really. We’re mostly of the opinion that if it’s not broke don’t fix it and after a twenty year hiatus shouldn’t a film like ID4 received a 2nd part a lot sooner? It sounds like 20th Century Fox’s collective scrapping of the barrel in the effort to compete with the Disney/Marvel world which is really whopping ass right now. Then again we do enjoy watching Roland Emmerich destroy the world like a kid with a pyromania disorder!

Independence Day Resurgence hits screens in the US on 24th June 2016. Check out the films website for more details on backstory and the latest developments.

Titanic: Honour and Glory’s stunning preview

0
titanics
Near, far, wherever you are….

The very mention of her name conjures up visions of size, superiority and the futility of a mighty feat of human engineering. In 1912 the Titanic sailed her first and last voyage and remains a potent reminder of man’s complacency in the face of nature. The loss of over 1,500 people in the icy waters of the North Atlantic shocked the world back then and the tragedy still fascinates many to this day. Over the past 100 years the Titanic spawned numerous books, films, TV documentaries and games with Titanic: Honour and Glory being the latest and most immersive game to date.

This new CGI model has been created to show, in real time, how the Titanic went from a seemingly innocuous brush with an iceberg to one of the greatest disasters of all time.

Designed by Vintage Digital Revival, the video was produced to showcase the immersive video game Titanic: Honour and Glory, which is currently in development.  The game will have you play the central character having to solve a mystery whilst racing against time to escape the sinking ship. The game will also have levels in historically accurate recreations of Southampton.

Whilst the video is a slow burner at a total running time of 2 hours and 40 mins the events are carefully played out with small bites of historical info popping up describing what exactly was happening. These moments are interlaced with CG footage of the ship’s interiors, created in consultation with Bill Sauder who was a consultant on the ’97 film and the ’96 game Titanic: Adventure Out of Time. What’s striking is how fast the ship plunges down in the last twenty minutes, which corroborates many eyewitness accounts that they felt there was no immediate danger. Whilst it may be a bit long for some it’s advisable to use your YouTube browser to see the internal scenes.

tumblr_mlace6vBXS1rnh1c7o6_1280

If that perks your interest in the famous ship then check this clip from the National Geographic documentary hosted by director James Cameron. Thus far his multi Oscar winning 1997 film stands out as one of the most famous depictions of the doomed liner. Its accuracy in the set design and recreation of the sinking was praised by many historians though it was derided somewhat for its main plot line. In 2012, Cameron, ever the perfectionist, returned with his team of Titanic experts to perfect his vision of the sinking. Using new computer technology with input from navel experts they produced a more accurate animation of the final plunge of the ship based on forensic analysis of the ship wreck.

Excerpt from James Cameron’s National Geographic Documentary

The developers are looking to finance the game via crowdfunding and hope to launch the game on Steam, Windows and OS X with Oculus Rift compatibility. You can find out more about Honour and Glory at the official site here http://www.titanichg.com/

SEGA Sign to Uto-what Now? – A Quick Look at the Netflix of Gaming

0

Bit of a Sega fanboy back in the day? Still yearn for old school classics and new titles all in one place? Well I think Utomik have just the thing for you.

But who are they you may ask.. Well they are being heralded as the “Netflix of Gaming” and are offering a service of streamable video games for PC users, with a catalogue of titles that is expanding weekly.

What this means is that, for the duration of Utomik’s current Beta period, you can subscribe for the discounted price of £4.49 a month ($5.99 for our overseas cousins in America) and immediately gain access to over 650 game titles from an increasing number of publishers.

You can also sign up for a free 14 day trial of the service, to see if it’s something that would interest you (which I will definitely be taking them up on)

Just a few of the games Utomik have to offer subscribersJust a few of the games Utomik have to offer subscribers

The latest of these publishers being SEGA, the stalwart veteran of the gaming industry. SEGA are bringing some gems from their Total War franchise to the service, as well as espionage rpg sleeper hit Alpha Protocol (What? I enjoyed it at least) and episodes 1 & 2 of Sonic the Hedgehog 4 to begin with, with no doubt more titles being announced soon.

Utomik promises a 1-click service, with games loading in the background while you play, offering an uninterupted, unhindered experience that will bring “100% of the original game quality”.

When asked about this partnership, Utomik CEO, Doki Tops, says that, “We are thrilled that SEGA has also decided to join our journey to ‘Unleash Gaming’ designed to bring more games to more people. We are looking forward to a long term partnership with the SEGA team.”

To support this, SEGA Europe’s John Clark had this to say: “SEGA has always been a pioneer in terms of new and easy to use consumer interaction gaming technologies. We are co-operating with Utomik because it fits our digital strategy and offers a highly effective user-friendly platform.”

Very high praise from the VP of Commercial Publishing, and one that really echoes what Utomik hope to achieve with this service.

With modern videogaming stepping fully into the digital age, with downloads and game streaming such as Sony’s “PlayStation Now” service becoming an increasingly commonplace replacement to the humble hardcopy, is this the future of videogames? Perhaps now instead of LAN parties, we can start having “Utomik and Chill” nights?

Let us know your thoughts on this in the comments.
I, for one, am definitely interested in seeing how this develops.

In the meantime, I’ve been and shall remain,

Warhold is coming to PC

A brand new game is heading to PCs soon, as Warhold is in the pre-alpha stage.

Warhold is the first outing from InQuake Studios, a company based in Moscow, Russia, who has been working on the game since opening its doors in 2014.

1

4

The game is an MMO (massive multiplayer online) with a dark fantasy theme and a heavy emphasis on strategy with some city-building elements thrown in for good measure. You act as the Sovereign and control your city-state using ancient knowledge as well as deadly spells.

You control your own team of heroes in a quest to be the dominant kingdom in the land, encountering fights, exploration and trade along the way. There is also a political influence, as your actions develop the economy and can potentially change the landscape of the in-game world.

9

8

The game is being designed using the very popular Unreal 3D engine, so you know it’s going to look good. How it will play out, however, remains to be seen, as the game continues through development. The premise sounds promising, and features a little bit of something for everyone.

3

Although the studio is unproven, everyone has to start somewhere, and InQuake seems to be going all in on their first major project. Denis Kruykov, InQuake’s founder and CEO, has stated that, “We are extremely excited to unveil Warhold and its many in-game features and captivating ideas the team has worked on to make it a game fans of this genre will gravitate towards.”

6

The MMO field is very competitive and a tough one to be a breakout star in, but the folks at InQuake seem to be prepared for the challenge. No official release date or pricing structure has been announced, but in the meantime, you can keep up on all the news at on their official website, where you can also sign up for closed alpha participation, and you can check out the official announcement trailer below.

Mafia 3 Launch Announced

0

Breaking down the Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Trailer

Cast of Rogue One. Note the R2-D2 hiding in the background!

Like most fanboys we at Geek Pride love to obsess over the finer details, especially when it comes to trailers. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is no exception. So let’s break down what we can see from this 2 minute teaser and mix that up with what little the boys over at Lucasfilm have been tentatively explaining in press releases and what it does to the expanded Star Wars universe as we knew it. As per usual we’ll probably look back at this article once the film comes out and realise how wrong we were about everything.

Probably can guess the outcome of this battle

The Plot

Tweeted by the official Star Wars Twitter account last April simply stated, Rogue One will be focused on  “a wayward band of Rebel fighters come together to carry out a desperate mission: to steal the plans for the Death Star before it can be used to enforce the Emperor’s rule.”

Cool, so the story will fill in some gaps between the end of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, meaning it’s probably set around 3-1 years BBY (that’s before Battle of Yavin in Star Wars chronology).

The Cast

So far the name of character played by Felicity Jones is Jyn Erso. From the trailer it seems she is the one charged with the task of stealing these plans to some dreaded weapon (dun dun dun, it’s the Death Star!!). This is an interesting move given that to many Star Wars EU fans this means that Kyle Katarn has been 86’ed from the canon of Star Wars. Katarn as you may or may not know was the central protag of the Dark Forces/Jedi Knight games of the 1990’s; the plot of the first game centring on his mission to steal the Death Star plans for the Rebel Alliance. Like Disney stated before all of the EU has been wiped out and no longer stands as official Star Wars lore so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that this plot thread has been rejigged. What’s more is that this story will not tie into the main saga itself so cool those keyboards those conspiracy nuts who are thinking Erso is Rey’s mother or something.

Dark Side/Light Side?

Jyn Erso, like many other Star Wars characters, has the shadow of mystery surrounding her background. The trailer hints that she was either a rogue Han Solo-eque figure that has been coerced into serving the Rebellion or that she may have been in the Imperial Navy; the final shot has her decked out in a Tie Fighter flight suit.

Many Bothans didn’t have to die to bring us this information, we just used Wikipedia and IMDB.

Much praise has been heaped upon the casting of Genevieve O’Reilly as Mon Mothma aka the only other woman in the Galaxy. This is in fact her second outing in this role having portrayed the rebel leader in Revenge of the Sith in 2005.

It’s ok, we forgive you for Battlefield Earth

Forrest Whitaker is another big name on the cast list although it’s not clear if he is a good guy or a bad buy. In fact director Gareth Edwards states that Rogue One is more like a “war film” where  “good guys are bad. Bad guys are good. It’s complicated, layered; a very rich scenario…”

The Locations and Hardware

Star Wars for so many of us is all about nostalgia and there seems to be bucket loads of it. Here we see the Imperial Star Destroyers and AT-AT walkers like we’ve always known and loved, not some knockoff’s or predecessors that were seen in the prequels. We see the duck billed helmet uniforms of the Rebel Fleet troopers walking about the ivy decked hangers of Yavin base along with the original Stormtrooper uniforms flailing about as usual. We also see the crowning glory of the space lazer crater being installed on the Death Star surface.

It's a frickin big "lazer"
It’s a frickin big “lazer”

This is the hard we all know and love and the designers are making sure that the sets, props and action will look and feel they exist in the real world of Star Wars as opposed to the OTT CGI mess that was the prequels. This my friends is the stuff of nerds dreams.

Question, is it “at at” walkers or “A T, A T” walkers? It’s never actually clarified in the trilogy!

Like The Force Awakens, much of Rogue One was filmed in England with some eagle eyed fans noticing that some scenes were actually shot down in Canary Wharf tube station. So remember that the next time you’re on your commute, you could well be standing in an Imperial base!

Two weeks on Rogue One’s trailer has surpassed 33 million hits with Disney execs making sure the fandom has its fair share of Star Wars in between the new main trilogy. Such was the success of TFA the saga will continue indefinitely with more spin offs, Lego Games and merch than you can shake a Jawa at.

All we can say is that we’re definitely excited. Check out the trailer and let us know what you think. Rouge One hits the cinema on the 16th of December.
