If you’ve finished the game and haven’t quite managed to separate yourself from the world of the Witcher with its myriad contracts, sorceresses and destiny then have no fear. If you’ve found that you’ve not quite had your fill of monsters and taverns, then there is a solution, you can always go back and learn more about the franchise through reading the books on which it was based!
The Witcher games have been based on the popular book series written by Andrzej Sapkowski, which were first published in a Polish fantasy and science fiction magazine called Fantastyka in the 1980’s. Non fan based English translations of the books became available from 2008 onwards.
There are 7 books altogether, with the series divided by story type, 2 of the books include a set of short of stories which come in the form of an anthology full of Witcher contracts and 3 are more in-depth novels detailing the ‘Blood of Elves’ sagas. The 6th book, Tower Of Swallows, is due for release on May 19th 2016 and the final book, which is yet to receive a translation date, is the Lady Of The Lake.
They closely follow the tale of the legendary White Wolf, Geralt of Rivia, on his journey to rid the world of monsters and evil, whilst trying to avoid and inevitably accepting his destiny.
A lot of the events which take place in the books are set before the timeline covered in the games, giving insight to previously unknown events which have been forgotten and explained in the games as ‘amnesia’.
Most of the stories have their roots firmly planted in myths and folklore, drawing inspiration from famous tales such as Snow White and the Little Mermaid. It’s not all fairy tales though, as other tales within the series hold a more political agenda as wars rage and kingdoms fall. If you’ve already played the popular gaming franchise then there will be stories and beasts which may be familiar to you, along with new creatures and tales yet to be told.
Through reading these books I’ve found that this is one of the rare occasions where having due knowledge of the franchise can be seen as a positive and not a negative, as some of the descriptions used to describe and identify the characters and locations are not always particularly detailed, it works well to have a pre loaded mental image to reflect back on.
Although there are plenty of decent translations from Polish to English already available from fans of the franchise, the collection published by Gollancz has been particularly praised for its faithful translation and its attractive covers.
The latest English translation of A Tower Of Swallows is due to be released on May 19th.
It’s here. Following the recent teaser to keep an eye on https://www.dawnofwar.com/, we now have the brand new announcement trailer for Dawn of War 3. Needless to say, given the very grim universe in which the Dawn of War series is set (that of Games Workshop’s Warhammer 40K), this trailer is brutal. It features a three way conflict between Orcs, Space Marines and Eldar, showing off everything from grunts to the titanic Eldar Wraith Lords. A lot of people die and while the trailer, with its foreboding voice over, isn’t exactly revealing much of the gameplay, it excellently conveys the atmosphere of the 40K universe. The Dawn of War series is fairly prestigious as an RTS and we can only hope that we’ll receive a gameplay trailer in the near future to show off how they’ve built upon the previous games. Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think in the comments:
Some of you may have already heard by now that Biowares critically acclaimed Mass Effect series is to become a one of a kind 4D holographic ride.
Mass Effect: New Earth will be located in California as one of Great America’s latest attractions. The ride is said to have been created using ‘cutting edge technology’, including 4D effects combined with live performances and incredible special effects, as well as the worlds largest and highest resolution 3D LED screen.
‘Great America guests will be taken on a thrilling adventure across the galaxy where they will travel through awe-inspiring landscapes, face off against bigger than life adversaries and ultimately help save the day’.
The rumour floating around Twitter and Facebook claims that the ride my contain a bridge of valuable information between the final events of Mass Effect 3 and its long anticipated follow up Andromeda, which may be established through story telling within the ride.
‘The dynamic new attraction will feature settings and characters from EA’s critically acclaimed Mass Effect™ videogame series developed by BioWare™ and will open in Spring of 2016′.
Does this mean that we’ll get to see Shepard and the crew of the SSV Normandy return to action one last time before the anticipated release of Andromeda?
As a die hard’ fan of the franchise from ‘across the pond’ I can safely say that that this sucks.
The concept doesn’t suck, the location and lack of availability however for most people who don’t have the time or money to take a casual trip half way around the world just for a ride (no matter how amazing it sounds) sucks.
Instead we’re going to have to sit at home and watch shaky cam footage on YouTube to try and extract any information that may be vital to future story development… in my best Elcor voice ‘with greatest jealousy and deepest sadness’.
Check out the video taken from Great America’s website, who have advised that the ride will debut on May 18th.
What do you think, will you make the long (or short) journey to Great America to experience this?
What other games would you like to see turned into rides?
Admittedly it’s been a while since I last owned a Call of Duty game (I think Ghosts may have been the last one I actually bought). But apparently, since I last looked, the series lost its goddamn mind. The first real trailer for Infinity Ward’s newest offering, Infinite Warfare, has just dropped and it’s hard to wrap words around how crazy this game looks. We have the standard set pieces of some kind of invasion, a war, the suggestion of some kind of treachery. However, on top of this we have robots, we have futuristic vehicles, we have full on spaceship battles. In a Call of Duty game. I think I may have lost touch. The game promises, despite all the aforementioned futuristic insanity, to “return to the roots of the franchise where large-scale war and cinematic, immersive military storytelling take center stage” and will release November 4th this year. Interestingly, a re-mastered edition of Modern Warfare will be provided to those who pre-order the Legacy edition of the game. Check out the trailer below and let us know your thoughts in the comments.
There will be minor spoilers here but nothing you probably haven’t seen on Facebook or on adverts already and if you didn’t know Jon Snow was ‘Dead’ and are now penning me an angry reply telling me I’ve spoilt it for you, well please forward these to.
Ok now first off, we know that Jon Snow is ‘dead’ currently, multiple stab wounds from numerous assailants tends to be pretty lethal and if that wasn’t’ categorical enough, at the end of Dance for Dragons (the book) he also has his throat slit… cant come back from either of those.. surely?
Well at the End of season 5 we asked people what they thought was Jon Snows fate and got a pretty mixed response:
Now, as time has moved on and we have been given a new episode, I’m more confident than ever that he is alive, or at least, will be alive very soon.
Here are my 5 reasons / Theories why:
Sightings of Kit Harington
First major clue is the obvious; Kit Harrington has been seen in N.Ireland Filming.
I come from a small Village called Ballycarry and they film in and around there. They also film the Wall and Castle Black in the Quarry down the road from my parent’s house, in Magheramorne and every time I’m home there is always gossip about seeing someone and last time I was back, it was about Kit.
Now the argument is made, and he has said this himself, that he’s there filming as a dead body, simple as that; but I don’t buy it.
Why would you get an actor in, after a year, and have him film dead body scenes, when they could have easily filmed them last year or just had a double stand in, with prosthetics… in the end why pay what is no doubt a high daily rate for someone who isn’t really needed?
On top of this, there is one interesting photo of Lord Commander Snow garbed up and talking to crew members near to what looks like a pyre.
They are burning the body, you may say… but burning it with his sword in his scabbard and at his hip?. I don’t know lots about Westerosey burials / cremations but historically swords would be placed on the chest and wouldn’t be sheathed or placed by the Hip….. that is, unless, he’s readying for battle?
Dun dun duuuuuhhhhhhhhhhh!
Acceptance of Jon Snow’s parentage.
To most, who haven’t thought much into it, Jon is the illegitimate son of Eddard Stark and some serving wench he knocked up while doing Rebel things with Robert Baratheon, many years before GoT started.
Understandable you may think, he is a man’s man after all, a warrior on a jaunt down south and its not like morals in this period are overly cared about; serving wenches are standard fare and different post code doesn’t count right?
For other Lords, knights, hedge knights and fighting men, maybe but this is completely out of character for the principled Eddard Stark.
The guy is the epitome of the honourable, chivalric Lord and knight. who loved his friends, his family and, most importantly, his wife. There is no way he would have cheated on her, let along sire an alleged bastard, then bring him home and to raise as his own.
No, there is more to Jon Snow than is being said and it would seem, even G.R.R Martin has confirmed this in numerous interviews. On top of this his apparent question to see if Daniel Weiss and Dave Benioff would be suitable to make his master piece into a series was:
“who are Jon Snow’s real Parents?”
This proves his parents aren’t who you think they are, or who Eddard would like you to believe they are. So why have a secret if they are just going to kill off the character. I know it’s a complicated story but that would just be a bit anticlimactic and a massive Red Herring.
So who are they you may ask…. like you don’t already know…. Well It isn’t stated but it is quite heavily hinted at that Jon’s parents are in fact Eddard’s Sister, Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen. R+L=J
Art by Manulys – http://manulys.deviantart.com/art/A-Song-of-Ice-and-Fire-463634704
The apparent abduction of Lyanna, sparked Robert and Ned’s Rebellion against the king and led to the crowning of Robert, who was Lyanna’s betrothed. BUUUUUUUTTT it is hinted at that maybe she went freely and that they were in love and the product of this love was a child born of Ice and Fire … they should have a Song about that….wait..whhhaaaattt?!
So why is his parentage such a big reason for him still being alive?
Well its simple, why have such a big secret, one that makes the difference between, choosing people who are going to make your book into a series, if you are going to just kill the character off before the secret is revealed? Martin likes curve balls but even I don’t think he would build something like this, only to ignore it.
Corroborating evidence to this is the fact that the Tower of Joy has been confirmed as being in Season 6.
This is the tower when Jon is born, and where Eddard finds his sister, dying… apparently after giving birth to a son, whom Ned promises to raise and look after as his own… MIC DROP…BOOM!
The dead will walk the earth
Unless they burn his body, Jon Snow is coming back as a Wight…, notice I’ve said Wight and not White Walker, the difference being, a White Walker, are turned humans, or pure breed creatures from nearly a millennium in the past, where as Wights are the reanimated, mindless corpses of the dead, who will do the bidding of the White Walkers.
It would be a major series inconsistency, if he doesn’t come back at least as a Wight. We only have to look back at the earlier books and series to see that the dead, don’t stay dead very long, and if you remember, one tried to kill the Lord Commander Mormont in his quarters and was saved by Jon snow himself.
Now granted, there are inconsistencies in the series (the current one with Melisandre being the hot potato) but this has been one of the main tenants of Wall and beyond the wall life, you die, your mates burn the body or you turn.
To just ignore this just doesn’t seem to make sense.
As it is, they cant burn his body, they are currently locked in one of the towers, with, what looks like from the adverts and clips, the Nights watch trying to break in.
In my mind this is likely to end up with the wildlings coming to their rescue and, who knows, maybe even the Boltons jumping into the fray to get Sansa back. All the while this battle is raging Jon Snow is lying there….
https://uk.pinterest.com/pin/338614465710475447/
If he does turn then one of two things will happen; he will come back as a Wight and be turned and given life by Mellisandre, or just before he does turn, at their hour of need and to avert a massacre, Mellisandre will bring him back either in the realisation that he is the Azor Ahai or in a bid to bring order to Castle Black before the White walkers or the Boltons attack.
The Red Lady
something is wrong with this picture….
Melisandre’s presence at Castle Black in both the book and the series seems to point at her being pivotal in Jon Snow’s story ark. (as mentioned previously)The question is what part will she play?
Well this really depends on if you look at the books or the series. In the books there are a lot of people being brought back from the dead, thanks to red priests (of which Melisandre is one) but as it is, in the series only one, Beric Dondarrion, has.
Either way it is too coincidental that she is at Castle Black, especially in the series where she leaves and then comes back… a tad convenient me thinks ma lady
We know she has powers, foresight and really isnt the sort of gal you’d want to wake up beside the next morning, but maybe she has misinterpreted what she has seen and maybe the Lord of Light, Azor Ahai, is closer than she thinks. Something in my mind she will realise, sooner rather than later.
Jon Snow is Azor Ahai
https://uk.pinterest.com/pin/325736985523809853/
There is a lot of debate about this point and many people, if not the majority think its Danny who is Azor Ahai, after all the prophecy goes:
When the red star bleeds and the darkness gathers, Azor Ahai shall be born again amidst smoke and salt to wake dragons out of stone
She was born again of fire, amidst Smoke and she woke her dragons from stone…but I think this is too obvious, her story seems to be to pointed, too leaning and I don’t think that’s how G R R Martin writes. He likes curve balls, as I mentioned, so to have everyone believe it was someone else, only to mic drop Jon snow at the end of Season 6, in my mind is something Martin would do and something HBO could totally get behind.
Granted the series has past the books ,in most areas, and it could go in whatever direction it wants but the one thing the books and the series have in common, or will have in common, is the end game, the end of the story, which has been, allegedly, passed on to Weiss and Benioff by Martin.
SO! If we take that they might have different paths to this end point but will converge eventually, we can accept that, the Lord of Light is likely to be a part of this story and the ending is one of Martin’s choosing, then I think it has to be Jon Snow.
In the end, if we are to accept that John is the produce of Lyanna and Rhaegar he is, Ice and Fire, he is what the song is about and if that wasn’t enough, Melisandre states the following:
“I pray for a glimpse of Azor Ahai, and R’hllor shows me only Snow”
https://uk.pinterest.com/pin/444237950721892816/
I’ll leave you to take what ever conclusion you want from this but I think it is pretty transparent and we wont have seen the last of the Lord commander…. THE LORD….OF LIGHT!
BONUS THEORY!
In the book, just after Jon has his Neck slit, he says ‘Ghost’ it is thought, and hinted at in the books, that Jon Snow, like Bran,is a Warg and could Warg into Ghost before he died. How he would get his body back, well, I guess thats what the red priests are for and Melisandre might not be around at the time but part of me feels with so many resurrections taking place in the book the likelihood of JS not getting the same treatment, is slim.
What do you think?
Got any other theories, ideas.. just think he’s totally dead? Then hit us up and let us know in the comments below.
Web series! YouTube channels! Comedy shows set in space! There are a billion of them these days, all screaming for your attention. Some are amazing, some are not so amazing. I would very much like to introduce you to a web series that I firmly believe is QUITE GOOD.
Full disclosure. It’s one of mine. I’ve made a few. I have a problem.
Ladies and gents, I give you The Away Mission.
It’s silly. It’s very, very silly. Seven episodes of half naked red uniform wearing crew who were tragically forgotten during a routine away mission. Mystery burgers, space balls, back flipping captains with the mandatory ripped vest and aliens portrayed by people painted green.
One half of the writing team is a huge Trekkie, and although the tropes pop up we did our best to steer clear of using certain words like “RedShirt”, “Kirk” or “Enterprise” but you’ll easily spot the parallels if you know your Tribbles from your Tellarites.
The full first season has a full run time of around 27 minutes, which is two decent cups of tea or 1/7th of Fellowship of the Ring. It would be an absolute delight to hear what you make of the show.

Seraph is a classic style arcade shooter where you are tasked with the job of cleaning up an invading horde of demons as they tear their way through the prison structure you have been held captive in. The idea behind the game is simple with the game auto-locking onto enemies as they come into range with the ability to target two enemies at once.
There is a story bundled with the game but its only shows at the start and end of levels with a short description of what’s happening and giving the game context. Not that this is an issue as the game doesn’t really need a story and it seems like a courtesy more than anything. You are encouraged to kill as many enemies as you can and to collect their life force in order to ascend and return home.
The combat system is simple and easy to follow as the auto lock feature makes light of the hordes of enemies that come your way. There are a number of different weapons to choose from including SMG’s, assault rifles and hand cannons, each with limited ammunition so its best to conserve your best weapons for the hardest targets. The game allows you to switch between which might not seem like a big deal but trust me, not all games do this. The player also has access to a number of special skills called “miracles” which do extra damage and require charging. These skills enhance the player experience by making you seem like a real badass, taking on large hordes and doing high amounts of damage with good looking special effects.
After first trying out the standard keyboard controls I often found it difficult to keep track and got my fingers crossed which resulted in a few deaths. There are a lot of things to keep in mind like dashing, skills, finishing off bosses, extra skills as well as dodging enemies. I found using a controller much better and really felt that the game was built with the controller in mind. The skill at which I played dramatically rose and I took far less damage.
When progressing through the game you have the opportunity to upgrade many of your skills and techniques. For instance you can heal yourself when damaging enemies or buff yourself when killing off demons.
The game itself looks great with soft and pleasing visuals but it did lack variety with the first 5 levels being almost identical in design and settings and the next “zone” being very similar. Some more variety would certainly be welcome.
Level 6 looking similar to level 1
Seraph also has a “Twich” mode with allowed viewer to alter certain mechanics during the stream to mix up gameplay. The Streamer connects directly to twitch by entering their key allowing direct interaction. It’s a great idea if executed well and I foresee many interesting streams and chances for streamers to get creative with their content.
Overall I really enjoyed the game. It’s certainly well built in terms of mechanics and skills etc… Simple yet deep enough to get your teeth into. As previously stated I do recommend playing with a controller if your not 100% comfortable with your keyboard. I used an Xbox 360 controller and it was a good experience doing so.
In terms of what’s missing, I would suggest a more engaging story with more than just a few dialogue boxes and more variety in level design. It would have been nice to have seen some more interesting weapons too.
Star Wars has always held it’s cards close to it’s chest, and so details about the upcoming Rogue One movie have been scarce. However, when being asked about a film you cannot talk about but still want to create a buzz about…it is very hard to say much without revealing a little something to get the rumour mills spinning.
Given his absence from the teaser trailer, there have been many questions regarding Mads Mikkelsen’s character, especially considering how much of a big actor he is – starring in Casino Royale and Hannibal to name but a few. It seems especially odd considering how Mads is always cast in villainous roles too.
In an interview with Sky News, he was asked about his involvement with the film, and how he felt when he was approached.
“I mean, I wasn’t really sure whether I was wearing a Storm Trooper outfit or anything like that at that point so I wasn’t sure I could fit into that”
[SPOILERS IN THE VIDEO BELOW]
“I read the script and it was very beautiful and Felicity’s [Jones] playing Jyn, a young and very strong woman. I play her father.”
You can tell that as soon as the words leave his lips, he realised how much he’s actually said and immediately follows up with “and that was too much, I’m sorry.”
So, Mads is set to play the father of Jyn Erso. What does this mean? Well, by itself…not an awful lot. However, due to the secrecy surrounding the character and his role, this does make you pause to think.
In particular, one of the things which stuck out to me was a rumour I heard a while ago, that Mads would play character who would be both the father of Jyn Erso (which was just confirmed) and a key architect for the Death Star. Which would be fantastic, especially considering how this explains why Jyn has been recruited for the mission to retrieve the plans, considering how they would most likely be in the hands of her father.
One Death Star to go…
Of course, Mads could also be appearing as a character who only appears briefly as a casualty, whose death spurs Jyn into rebelling against the Empire. But why the secrecy? Or could this be a double bluff?
Regardless, the one thing we can take away from this is that whilst it finally answers one question about his character, it raises several more about WHO he is, and WHY he is so important. Questions we may only get answers to when the film comes out later this year.
Rogue One is set to be released on the 16th of December 2016
Netflix have finally seen sense/realised their grand masterplan as it looks as though Jon Bernthal’s Punisher is getting his own series. According to Entertainment Weekly, the series has been greenlit and will be announced shortly, with Steve Lightfoot due to be the showrunner.
Now, anyone who has seen Season 2 of Daredevil will know that The Punisher was one of the best things in the series. Compelling, dark, and well-played by Bernthal, the character immediately had fans calling for a spin-off series. Indeed, I was one of them! Rumours have been swirling about this happening ever since the character’s appearance in Daredevil was announced, and it looks like each of them was true.
It’s about damn time…
It’s going to be a daunting task though, as the Punisher can be quite hard to write for. It’s easy to make him the secondary character in another’s story, an antagonist-turned-protagonist for when the chips are really down, but going in-depth with the mindset of a vigilante who is one step away from being the sort of criminal he himself would hunt will require a deft touch. Not least because just watching a man mow down gang members for thirteen episodes wouldn’t be all that entertaining…
Luckily – and in a move that makes you realise just how carefully Marvel and Netflix are planning things out – there was a short teasing scene toward the end of Daredevil season 2. The Punisher returns to his family home to burn it down, but not before removing a CD marked ‘MICRO’ from behind a photo. Add on top of this that there are hints around connections between Frank’s military career and his family being killed, and there ought to be enough potential to tap for a full series.
So yes, colour us excited here at Geek Pride. Those colours of course would have to be black and white, though…
