With the upcoming remake on the horizon, I decided to go back and re-play through it in all its original glory.
The Original Final Fantasy VII Trailer – Feel The Nostalgia!
120 hours in to my current play through and I am still loving it. It has lost none of its charm whatsoever. Yes, the graphics may be dated and the sound may be dodgy, but dammit the storyline and the emotions that it stirs still get me even today almost twenty years after its initial release.
I will admit here and now that I am not exactly looking forward to a re-make of Final Fantasy VII. I am, perhaps, stuck in my ways and not willing to accept change. I have, after all, committed a very large proportion of my spare time to playing not only FFVII but many other Final Fantasy games too. The prospect of an episodic remake chills me somewhat. But, at the same time, the realist in me knows that due to the sheer size and openness of Final Fantasy VII, it could never be released today with the graphics that current audiences expect without it being broken down in an episodic fashion.

Preview footage of the NEW Final Fantasy VII – I am reticent to admit it, but Damn! Looks pretty!
Will the re-make be a success? The nostalgic in me hopes not. It hopes that it will die and make people go back to the original Final Fantasy VII. However, the Geek in me hopes it will be a success. I hope it will blow me away and teach me that as much as I love old games, some are destined to be re-made and I should embrace them instead of railing against change.
Firsts off, there are potential SPOILERS for the series / books if you haven’t watched or read them already, also there are a lot of theories being banded around here so if you carry on reading, it is at your own risk… thow hath been warned!
Still here?
Ok let us continue.
Narrated in video, Written version below
The Song of Ice and Fire book and the Game of thrones TV series are complicated to say the least. Trying to divine or figure out what is going to happen next is like trying to predict the lottery; highly improbable.
A matter made all the more conspicuous when you take into account that the series and books, once of the same mind and body are now diametrically opposed in many aspects; including plot line and characters.
Like a great oak that once started as a single stem, then sprouted off into two different gnarled and grim directions. Branches would jut out and, in places, merge and go in the same way but as a whole the tree, is, in effect, two separate entities.
This analogy will be lost on those who have only read the books or only just seen the series but to those of us who have waded through the blood, deceit, sex and snow of both are fully aware, and in some cases lament, the differences.
But it is through this hard toil and dedication to the series as a whole that, in its dark, unyielding and dangerous form, light, clarity and even clues can be seen.
It is after all known (its is known) that despite the different directions of both, the end game, the striving for the end of winter and for the trees green leaves to bask in the Lord of Lights golden glow, is the same. Martin has even provided Benioff and Weis how he wants the book (and therefore the series)to finish and so with a fixed point it would seem that despite all these different paths that there is a dedicated end.
Granted, this is Martin and HBO we are talking about and trying to tie them down to a set ending would be like having Ramsey Bolton tame one of the dragons, Martin isn’t one to follow the norm and HBO will likely follow the path they feel will get them the best ratings.
But it is my view Martin hasn’t got much left and to start adding more complications will just prolong something that has taken up so many years of his life and as much as I’m sure it is a labour of love, it is something he will be glad to see the end of.
So, a fixed point it is, a winding path to a joined end, bringing harmony to series and books a like.
This is all very well and good Matt, but what are you trying to get to in this piece? Ok, well like the dragons, it is coming.
There are many big characters within the Song of Ice and Fire, too many to establish a definitive outcome for them all and the effects they will have in the lands of Westeros and those across the narrow sea.
I will therefore look at 5 people, who, in theory, could have the biggest impact on the lands of Westeros and the theory behind some of them being the 3 heads of the dragon, the Sigel of the Targaryen’s.
I will also put forward how I feel the series is likely to end and man is it a doozey!
THE 3 HEADS OF THE DRAGON AND HE / SHE WHO WOULD RULE-
Daenerys
Dany is a pretty much given for a part of the 3 heads of the dragon theory (and another contender for Azor Ahai). She’s a Targaryen, She is, by title, the mother of Dragons, of which she has 3 and to cap it off, fire and hot burny stuff does nothing to her.
She is also currently the rightful heir to the Iron Throne… or is she?
When Dany is in the house of the Undying she encounters some different rooms, all giving her Visions; some of the past but some of things not yet to come to be.
This is where the series and the books differ quite a lot, with the series cutting out a lot, most likely because HBO didn’t want future episodes to be ruined.
The one scene that is shown, and now in season 6, adds up a bit more, is her walking through the Red Keep throne room, covered in Snow, she reaches out to touch something on the Iron thrown but then is distracted by the sounds of her Dragons and walks off and through The Wall’s main gate.
Is this a foreshadow of the coming of winter to Kings landing and her need to defend the wall, or, is this her seeing that she won’t have the throne of Westeros as it will belong to the Snow.. or Jon Snow?
Quite tenuous I must admit BUT if you look at the vision she has in the tower, in the book, it adds up slightly more:
In the 5th room she sees a man who looks a lot like her brother Viserys, but with different coloured eyes and is taller. This man, we would make the assumption is Rhaegar is speaking to a woman who is nursing a newborn child; we make another assumption that this is Ellaria Martell as he informs her that the child’s name should be Aegon
“What better name for a king?”.
The Lady asks Rhaegar if he will write a song for the child, and he replies that he has a song and:
“He is the prince that was promised, and his is the song of ice and fire.”
He then looks right at Daenerys and adds:
“There must be one more,” and “The dragon has three heads.”.
The “there must be one more” line is very cryptic but we can assume that, as he is talking to Dany, the one more, would be the third head: Dany, Aegon and…..
Jon Snow
Now, as described in my last article (5 reasons why John Snow is alive) I discuss the major fan theory that Jon is in fact the son of Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark (R+L=J) I won’t go into it in any depth as many already know this theory and it would seem, if the series previews are to believed, that in episode 3 we are going to be shown just that.. the Tower of Joy, Ned stark seeing his sister die in child birth and her asking him to look after Jon. (or something heavily implying this)
The fact that he now lives again (I called it 6 years ago!) can only add credence to this theory (and another that he is in fact Azor Ahai.. again see my previous article)
We also have to think about the visions seen in the series and in the book. The Series vision showing snow on the Iron Thrown may well imply Jon Snow as the new King and therefore a head of the dragon.
This being said, going back to the book’s vision, Rhaegar may name him Aegon but he also says:
“He is the prince that was promised, and his is the song of ice and fire.”
This to me rules out Aegon as we know him from the books (see below) and what is spoke of him in the series.
But what if the woman in the vision was in fact Lyanna? And that Aegon was Jon’s actual name, and not the one Ned gave him when he returned with him to Winterfall?
Sayyyyy whhhhhhhhaaaaaaatttt?
Jon is born of Ice and Fire; Ice from his mother’s side and Fire from his fathers; he is the Prince that was promised, a Targaryen, a head of the Dragon and a contender for being rightful heir to the Iron throne, even over Danny, as he is only Heir of the Heir to the throne and so giving him primacy over his Aunt.
Issue here is though, he may be a Head of the Dragon, he may have Targaryen blood and he may even be the Lord of Light but he’s still a bastard and so could never never be king, while Danny was alive and he wasn’t legitimised; that is unless his real father and mother were actually married… but that couldn’t happen right? Rhaegar already married Ellaria Martell?
He did buuuut, Polygamy, though not common, was not unheard of in Westeros and was practiced.
George R R Martin said this:
“Maegor the Cruel has multiple wives, from lines outside his own, so there was and is precedent. However, the extent to which the Targaryen kings could defy convention, the Faith, and the opinions of the other lords decreased markedly after they no longer had dragons. If you have a dragon, you can have as many wives as you want, and people are less likely to object”
If Rheagar and Lyanna got secretly married as well as giving birth to Jon then we have a serious succession crisis here.
Aegon (Little Griff)
Ok, so for those who haven’t read the books Aegon Targaryen is dead, the Mountain smashed his little brains out against a wall, killed his sister, and because he’s a super awesome chap, went on to rape and murder their mother Ellaria Martel, the fallout of that you already know… ouch.
Anyway, the book on the other hand, has a similar story BUT, it is very heavily implied and then stated, that a character called Little Griff, is in fact Aegon, and that he was smuggled out of Kings landing during the sack, where the son of a farmer from Pisswater Bend replaced him.. The father having sold his son to Varys for some Arbor Golden wine!
This is a rumour that even Tywin’s brother, and new hand of the King, Kevan, started to believe to be true… before he was killed by Varys at the end of The Dance with Dragons.
As the books go, Aegon is the rightful Heir to the throne, being the son of the Heir, Rhaegar and therefore also a head of the Dragon. Something that is backed up by the fact Varys believes he is the Heir and shows that he has been actively manipulating things for his return, which he does, with an army.
The problem we have with Aegon is that, series wise, he’s not really mentioned and there has been nothing to imply he survived, and, unless HBO want do something out of left field not a story ark that I think they will follow; something I feel is due to the direction they are going with another character.
Tyrion
There is a theory that, despite the recent media attention, has been around for a while stating that Tyrion is a Targaryen and the product of King Aerys lust for Tywin Lannister’s wife Joanna.
Sir Barristan in A Dance with Dragons says :
“Prince Aerys . . . as a youth, he was taken with a certain lady of Casterly Rock, a cousin of Tywin Lannister. When she and Tywin wed, your father drank too much wine at the wedding feast and was heard to say that it was a great pity that the lord’s right to the first night had been abolished. A drunken jape, no more, but Tywin Lannister was not a man to forget such words, or the . . . the liberties your father took during the bedding.”
Now, obviously this would have been too early for Tyrion to be conceived but it lays precedence and shows that the prince (then to become king), could have, and likely did have, his way with Tywin’s wife, Joanna, later on, and in that union begot a son; maybe one of the reasons Tywin tortures Tyrion so much.
Now this is where the books and the series split apart again.
In the books the above is stated but that’s it, there is no other implications or insinuations towards Tyrion’s blood line and in fact he starts to have suspicions himself that Little Griff is in fact Aegon:
Tyrion plays Little Griff a game of cyvasse and after being tricked by Tyrion he gets angry and kicks over the cyvasse board. He immediately commands Tyrion to pick up the pieces and as he is about to do so he thinks to himself:
“He may well be a Targaryen after all”
It is very likely that Tyrion, in the books at least, will not be one of the 3 Heads of the Dragon or a Targaryen but will instead be, what he has always been, wise council, with a drinking habit.
Now, the series on the other hand, well, taking into account that Aegon / Little Griff aren’t mentioned, or likely to have a story ark, outside of maybe one of Brans visions, then that would leave a space for a third head of the dragon wouldn’t it? Another character who, for some reason, was able to confront Deanery’s Dragons, take off their restraints and leave, unscathed.
Dragons are very smart, as Tyrion says, so maybe they know, in the series at least, who he really is.
THE CONTENDERS AND WHO GETS THE THRONE
So we have now got 4 possible Contenders who fit into the Theory of the 3 headed dragon and equally 4 possible contenders for sitting on the Iron Thrown.
We know that all of them, depending on if you read about them or watch them, fit the proverbial mould and in my mind it is likely that as the series goes we will have Dany, Jon and Tyrion, where as in the books, it seems more probable that it will be Dany, Jon and Aegon (little Griff).
Granted, the Winds of Winter is still to be released and more could change, but as it is, based on the evidence presented and the clues at our disposal, these two scenarios seem to be quite plausible.
That being sorted, then who will sit on the Iron throne?
Well I guess it is equally plausible, if not slightly ikkey, that all 3 of them would, Targaryen’s after all do marry within the family to keep the blood pure and we have noted that Polygamy is a thing, especially if you have 3 dragons.
More realistically though if it was to be the 1 person then you have some rather strong claims, and in Aegon’s case and even Jons (depending on if it is confirmed his mother and father were wed) would surpass that of Dany’s; her being the sister of Rhaegar and both Jon and Aegon being Sons.
As it is though, I don’t think that Martin or HBO would build up a character like Daenerys only to have her surpassed by another, no, I think she will be queen in one way or another and the only way I think it will tie in with the whole story and bring a crescendo to the song of Ice and Fire is if Jon Snow and Dany marry, ikkey still but not as bad, as there is at least a mix of blood there.
He’s Ice, She’s Fire and either Tyrion or Aegon (in the books and if he survives) would be the Hand of the king.. Giving you again the 3 heads of the Dragon, protecting the Iron Throne and uniting the land and those across the Narrow Sea,
THE END OF THE SONG
So, we have our plausible 3 headed dragon and so here is where the end game comes in and where the winding branches and paths join to become one.
This is a theory that I have had for a while and it might not be one of the most popular ones but I think it’s plausible and, having tested it out on some of the actors from Game of Thrones when I interviewed them, it seems to have gone down quite well… so here it is:
The Theory
Summer has come after a long and bloody winter, the White Walkers / Others have been defeated and we have our three headed Dragon sitting in power overseeing the reconstruction of Westeros and the dawn of a new Era.
But out of the shadows, a character appears. A man who, throughout the entire Game of Thrones has been playing once side against another and all for his betterment and gain.
He has allegedly had something to do with the death of the old Hand of the King, Jon Arryn; Framed Tryion, betrayed Ned Stark, became Lord of Harrenhall, had a hand in the death of Joffrey, killed his fiancée Lysa, became regent of the Eyrie and would seem to have machination’s towards the north as well.
As time goes on in the series and books, this man’s power will grow and then at the end, just as we think we will finally get a happy ending, a resolution, he will kill, or have killed those who fought to win the thrown and save Westeros from the Others / White Walkers.
The final scene will be that of Petyr Baelish, Little finger, sitting on the Iron throne, looking down, the camera pans back and up towards his face and he looks up and grins.. black and then credits.
AND THE INTERNET EXPLODES!
The Reasons
Ok, this will not be a popular theory I don’t think because it will just be too grim and after so many beloved characters dying and bad things happening people need a resolution BUT it is because of this that I think it is plausible.
Little finger has, throughout the series and books been power building and manipulating everything and everyone and he’s not going to just disappear, especially as, based on Martins Mindset (or so I believe) a cliff hanger like that is more realistic despite the magic and dragons, and also is something that would have his master piece talked about for years to come.. Arguments will be had, nerds will rage and all the while we didn’t see it coming.
G R R Martin is a big History nerd, he reads it, writes about it and based Westeros on it. Having a degree in Military History myself I can see this.. like a cross between the Wars of the Roses and the Roman Civil Wars.
And in History, wars and Kingdoms are not often won by heroes of pure heart, no they are won through Machiavellian cunning, power building and deceit; something we all know Little Finger is more than capable of carrying out and as we sit and watch (and hopefully will be reading soon) his rise to power will only become more apparent, and then it will be too late.
Thanks for Reading everyone, it has been a long one but if you got this far, congratulations.
Make sure to share this out, leave us a comment below and as always give it a like.
Legends of Tomorrow is the latest addition to The CW’s expanding DC comics based TV universe. The concept is pretty simple, time traveller Rip Hunter (Arthur Davill) has recruited several other characters, Sarah Lance (Caity Lotz), Ray Palmer (Brandon Routh), Leonard Snart (Wentworth Miller), Mick Rory (Dominic Purcell), Dr. Martin Stein (Victor Garber), Jefferson Jackson (Franz Drameh), Kendra Saunders (Ciara Renee) and Carter Hall (Falk Hentschel), who help try to prevent Vandal Savage (Casper Crump) from taking over the world and killing Hunter’s wife and son in the future.
The series has its good points, characters from both Arrow and Flash going off on time travel adventures has a great sense of fun to it and there’s some great chemistry between some of the characters, Miller’s Snart and Purcell’s Rory being a good example . Comparisons to the BBC’s Doctor Who are further emphasised by the fact that Davill is well known to British viewers for his role as Rory on the BBC’s show between 2010 and 2012.
The series also has its down points though, namely Kendra and Carter (aka Hawkgirl and Hawkman) are woefully underdeveloped. Kendra in particular is subject to crude attempts to shoehorn in some soapy style love story aspect, one of the worst things about Arrow. Vandal Savage is another problem, Savage is sold as an ancient immortal warmongering tyrant but here it takes him until the far future to actually conquer the world which makes the character unintentionally laughable.
Despite its faults one of the things that Legends of Tomorrow does allow for is featuring characters that might never appear in a film or in other DC shows (or have appeared in films that were woefully bad given how awful DC based films have been of late). Rip mentions there are different branches of time which could be prime opportunity for exploration. One example of this was when the team travelled to the past and met Jonah Hex the surly and scarred bounty hunter in America’s Wild West.
With this is mind here’s some characters that could work really well on Legends of Tomorrow.
Etrigan The Demon,
Created back in the 70’s by comic legend Jack Kirby, Etrigan The Demon is an anti-hero character that gained a whole new prominence with appearances in Neil Gaiman’s Sandman and Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing amongst others. A powerful demon Etrigan was summoned by the wizard Merlin but then bound within Jason Blood a knight of Camelot, this made Blood immortal both a blessing and a curse. The dichotomy of Etrigan and Blood is a spin on the classic Jekyll and Hyde story. Etrigan is powerful even in his bound state but capricious and self serving in nature whilst Blood’s long life has scarred him him in more than physical ways.
Deadman,
Originally appearing in the 60’s Deadman is another character who would gained prominence via the works of Neil Gaiman and Alan Moore in The Books of Magic and Swamp Thing as well as other appearances including more recently in Justice League Dark. Deadman is a former circus trapeze artist named Boston Brand who performed his daring act under the stage name of Deadman whilst wearing a red costume and ghoulish white corpse make up. When Brand is murdered during his routine his spirit is given the ability to possess the bodies of the living by a god named Rama Kushna to bring his killer to justice.
The Phantom Stranger,
One of DC’s more nebulous characters The Phantom Stranger first appeared way back in the 50’s and is often featured as a wise but mysterious and cryptic figure with various supernatural powers often observing and helping other characters defeat some nefarious force of evil. The Phantom Stranger has appeared in various titles over the years at one point being offered a place in the Justice League alongside featuring in Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing, Matt Wagner’s Madame Xanadu and featured in The Trenchcoat Brigade amongst others. There are various origin stories for the character.
Booster Gold
First appearing in the 80’s Booster Gold is an egotistical glory seeking hero from the far future who utilises future tech and knowledge of historical events to help gain fame and status via highly public incidents of “heroism”. Over time Booster Gold actually becomes a genuine hero dealing with the problems of his reputation for being a glory seeker.
Zatanna,
First appearing in the 60’s Zatanna is the daughter of powerful magic wielder Giovanni “John” Zatara and a powerful magic wielder in her own right who discovers her gift whilst searching for her missing father. Zatanna has featured in various titles from DC from her own like Zatanna Everyday Magic to Justice League Dark amongst others. Zatanna has previously appeared in various DC animated productions like Batman: The Animated Series and also featured in the TV series Smallville.
Yarr! Avast ye landlubbers, tis time to play a card game to test yur mettle and clever spendin’. Tis Port Royal!
Set in a port (duh), your role is to recruit a crew of the pious, the powerful and sometimes the piratical and to complete objectives to earn victory points. The first to twelve wins!
The game itself is one of pushing your luck. Port Royal consists of a single deck of cards within which are a mix of ships (of varying colours and reward), objectives and characters. During your turn, the player will reveal the top card of the deck; they can then choose to reveal a second, third and so on until they choose to stop, or they bust because a second ship of the same colour as one already revealed turns up.
If the player busts, they discard everything and end their turn. If they stop, they can then choose one, two or three cards from those revealed depending on how many different colours of ship they managed to turn over. So if you have three different colours you can take one, if you have four you can take two and if you get all five different colours, you can grab three.
As already detailed, three different cards exist in the deck. Ships give you gold depending on how big they are. What’s clever about this game’s design is that the cards also act as the coins; players just draw cards face down from PT’s single deck until they get enough. This adds a tricksy element of not knowing what cards have been taken, and reduces the effect of card counting as you are never sure which cards have been removed. It’s an elegant solution that keeps PT’s component count down, making it both cheap and playable in a small area like a pub or cafe.
Character cards are instead bought from the revealed cards and give a permanent bonus. For example, the Pirate gives the player swords which allow then to ‘repel’ ships, reducing the risk of getting two of the same colour, whilst the Priest gives a Holy icon which helps with completing objective cards (more on this below). Each character also includes a victory point value depending on their cost and power level.
Objectives are set aside when revealed from the deck, and players can complete then by spending their characters who match the symbols on the card. So if an objective has two Holy icons and an Anchor icon, the player can discard two Priests and a Captain to complete the objective, giving them both coins and victory points worth more than the discarded characters.
Once a player had taken what they want, instead of scooping up all the cards they pass them to next player. They then have the opportunity to buy a card as well, so long as they also pay the active player a coin on top of the ship/character they take. This mechanic promotes player engagement (along with the stress of ‘will they/won’t they bust’ of course!) and keeps the game pace up as people have more opportunites to get the cards they need. It also keeps the money moving, another way of pumping the speed. Once everyone has had a chance to buy/take a ship, the remaining cards are discarded and the next player takes their turn flipping cards.
Port Royal is a game of smart, stylish design. Everything is done with one deck of cards which in itself promotes tension along with the push-your-luck element of resource collection. I adore how pared down PT is whilst still delivering a meaty game experience, all within thirty minutes. The mix of cards gives enough depth to this short game to promote several possible strategies: do I buy lots of Pirates to repel all but the biggest ships, do I buy the most expensive characters for victory points, or do I chase those objectives?
The sense of progression given by the characters gives the player the palpable feeling of gaining control over what starts as a pure-luck game. That said, it is still a push-your-luck game, meaning PT’s biggest weakness is that even a small string of bad luck (two blue ships right off the top?! What the hell!?!) can set you back significantly. If you can’t get coins, you can’t get the characters that improve your consistency and mitigate some of the luck factor. It can also be rather deflating to have two or three turns of ‘doing nothing’.
The components are fairly decent, with a thick and well-printed cardstock to hold up to the high level of shuffling required in Port Royal. The artwork is, shall we say, functional? It’s not bad, but I won’t be framing enlarged prints any time soon. The simple graphics and limited colouring don’t hurt the game, but if I saw this at a convention and didn’t know what it was, I’d probably walk on.
So it’s a shortish game with plenty of tension and clever mechanics in an elegantly designed package. Just be aware that luck plays a significant part in gameplay, and you won’t be drooling over how this looks on the table top. I thoroughly recommend this game, with the bonus of being able to play at the pub!
I know that my review is a little late, my reasoning behind that is I wanted to wait until the end of the bank holiday opening weekend to see the box office numbers and overall takings. Batman V Superman DOJ stood the proverbial champion of the box office weekender; alas no more. Civil War has surpassed it with a whopping 400 million plus takings so far and the numbers keep going up; it hasn’t even been released in the states yet. Sorry DC.
On the 26th of April I attended the Premier of Captain America: Civil War at the Westfield Shopping Center in London. The horde of Marvel fans was just that, a horde! The numbers of attendees surpassed 2000 people by 7am the day of the Premier, to say Marvel can’t bring a crowd is an understatement. After watching the show and the stars walked the red carpet, I took my seat inside the cinema and watched the magic happen.
To give Civil War a decent review I have to first make you understand that we were never going to get the graphic novel “Civil War” it was going to be impossible to make that movie in the MCU with the characters we have already been introduced to, unless you split it into 3 separate movies; but what we’ve got is just as good, in this writers honest opinion.
Development of Civil War started in late 2013 when Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely began writing the screenplay, borrowing concepts from the 2006 comic book storyline Civil War, and then in 2014 the Russo brothers were brought back to direct after positive reactions to test screenings of The Winter Soldier.
The film’s title was a surprise reveal in October 2014 when crowds thought the title was “Serpent Society” and Downey was announced to join, with additional cast members included in the following months. Brought back to action were the likes of Scarlett Johansson (Black Widow), Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes), Anthony Mackie (Falcon), Don Cheadle (War Machine), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Paul Bettany (Vision), Elizabeth Olsen (Scarlet Witch) and Paul Rudd (Ant-Man). These Avengers we know and love and to have so many back without it being an “Avengers” titled film was pretty impressive; not to mention the supporting cast of, Emily VanCamp as Agent 13, Sharon Carter, Frank Grillo as CrossBones, William Hurt as General Thaddeus “thunderbolt” Ross and Daniel Brühl as main villain Zemo.
But that wasn’t the end of the Hype train as Chadwick Boseman, aka T’Challa aka The Black Panther, was added and then the hype bomb went off with a character that all fans wanted, nay, needed; Peter Parker aka Spider-Man! A must for this geek as he played such a pivotal roll in the Civil War Comics.
So the story, with many people fearing the actions of super heroes, the government decides to push for the Anti-Hero Registration Act or as it’s called in the film “Cerkovian law”, a law that limits a heroes actions and to be only deployed in extreme circumstances by the UN security Council. This results in a division within The Avengers.
Tony Stark stands with this Act, claiming that their actions must be kept in check otherwise cities will continue to be destroyed and people will continue to die, but Steve Rogers feels that the restrictions put on them by the world governments will only lead to them being unable to react to certain threats and so, ironically cause more death and destruction.
This divide, starts off as a heated debate but soon, mostly due to the captains loyalty to Bucky, ends in all out war between the group.
The Film itself has it’s moments of greatness with excitement, fast pace and fun( Antman, giving us some great laughs in true Rudd fashion) but, and I hate that I have to use the but, it felt like the story ended too suddenly and we didn’t quite get the resolution we wanted. Also for a Captain America titled film it centres far too much around Iron Man and the Way Stark wants to run with things; you feel its more IRON MAN 3.5 than a Cap film and that for me is a shame; especially after the amazing Captain America: Winter soldier.
On top of this it would seem like we lost out on a bit more Spiderman due to the uncertainty of the agreement with Sony. This obviously was to the advantage of T’Challa, who had had originally a much smaller role in the earlier drafts. However, when it looked like Marvel would not be getting permission to use Spider-Man, Black Panther’s role was beefed up significantly and by the time they had confirmed Spider-Man, T’Challa had already become so integral to the plot that they decided to leave his role as is and give Spider-Man a smaller part.
Not to belittle Black panthers roll, as I think he was a great addition, but Bad times for Spidey fans. But hey at least he was in it and that moment Stark says “UNDEROOS!” and Tom Holland make his Marvel début by webbing up caps hands, pinching his shield and land effortlessly on the roof of a truck was totally worth it.
All in all, maybe I am being slightly over picky about a film I did genuinely enjoy but I cant quite give it that extra 1.5 stars. Was it everything it could have been? Not quite. Was it still worth the watch.. damn right it was!
Anyway, this is just my humble opinion and we would love to know yours; let us know yours in the comments below…..

And so, the cat is out of the bag. The new Battlefield game is Battlefield 1 – Set in World War 1!
Biplanes, Triplanes, Tanks and artillery. Trench Warfare, Battleships, and horseback charges in the desert! The first time that ‘modern technology’ came to the battlefield. The war to end all wars, or so they said. and EA want to take us there in HD.
Before the trailer, they discussed the history of battlefield, and the fact that while Battlefield has become synonymous with destruction and spectacle, for them it’s also about communication and teamwork – They started out wanting to bring the teamwork and fun of the LAN party to an online game, and the immersion and immediacy of the game experience to help you feel like you were in the game. They felt that, with the new Game Changers program, the community had been a real part of the new game – Let’s see if they made a difference!
With one of the Game Changers on stage, they talked about the immediacy and physicality of the new game, embodied by the Entrenching tool in the face melee maneuver you see in the trailer.
They’re looking to show us not only the parts of the War everyone knows – the trench lines of France, the battles in the desert, but they want to show just how far the war spread. They’re also bringing a host of new vehicles, including some of the biggest vehicles they have ever built.
The battles are still limited to a maximum of 64 players, and preserves their ‘Rock, Paper, Scissors’ balancing that keeps one weapon or vehicle from dominating outright. They talked about the sheer range of options the player will see, with many ways to solve problems.
To increase immersion, they have tried to draw you in further with the sound and design, but also with more intuitive controls, and by using all the tools at their disposal to make it more cinematic and involving. All this combines with teamwork to make it more fun, and they are working to reward team players over lone wolf players. Teams can move from server to server together, rather than splitting and reforming, so the whole experience can be enjoyed together.
There will of course be the usual range of weapons – Pistols, rifles, shotgun, machine guns… and of course, Melee weapons!! Heavy, light, pointy and blunt… And Bayonet charges. Charge!!!
Vehicles range from cars and trucks, to tanks, fighters, bombers and battleships. and don’t forget your trusty horse!!
They haven’t forgotten the campaign, either. They are bringing more vehicles, more choices and more ‘Battlefield Moments’. The campaign will follow several different characters and show their experiences and how they change.
It’s definitely looking epic, but it’s not due until October. Let’s hope it plays as well, because we KNOW will sell well… Admit it, you already pre-ordered, didn’t you?

Battlefield 1 will launch on October 21st, 2016 Worldwide on Xbox One, Origin™ for PC and PlayStation®4.
As the search continues for more comics to adapt for film the latest development is that Fox is looking to bring Mark Waid’s Irredeemable to the big screen. Which should be interesting to say the least.
Why you ask? For those that don’t know Irredeemable (published by BOOM! Studios Between 2009 and 2012 with Peter Krause and Diego Barreto providing art) is the story of what happens when Plutonian, the world’s greatest superhero snaps and becomes ,in the blink of an eye, the world’s greatest villain.
As an enraged Plutonian takes his wrath out on an unsuspecting terrified world, his former team mates collectively known as The Paradigm, are the only ones who stand a chance of stopping his psychopathic rampage. Irredeemable is starkly grim as Plutonian kills a former team mate and his entire family, lobotomises another and kills millions as he decimates Sky City, the city he once protected. Meanwhile The Paradigm try not to implode under the revelations that Plutonian’s actions bring out whilst trying their best to stay alive long enough to devise a means to take him down.
Exactly how this grim but undeniably engrossing tale will make it to screen remains to be seen but there’s no way they could do Irredeemable right without getting a higher rating than the usual comic book films we are now used to.
Adam McKay is set to direct, with Tommy Wirkola on script duties. (Source)
Battleborn is the latest first person shooter to come out of Gearbox, the studio behind the Borderlands series. I say first person shooter but perhaps that’s not an accurate description as many of the heroes you will see in the game are perfectly happy bringing a sword to a gun fight! Or a stick… or a rocket launcher. Essentially there is no rules for combat when the last star in the universe is at stake!
There are 25 characters to choose from but many will need to be unlocked before you can play them. At its core, Battleborn features two main ways to play and both can be played either solo or with the online community.
A small selection of whats on offer
The first is the story mode which sees the “Battleborn” thrust into action in order to save the last star from being engulfed by the darkness. You start out as Mellka who is tasked with locating and rescuing Deande who defected from the side of darkness in order to protect the last star. After a brief introduction into how the game is played you are free to carry on with the story mode or you can jump straight into some intense online multiplayer, although doing so you will be limited to just a handful of characters.
You can either choose to unlock extra characters from completing story missions or by levelling up your profile rank depending on how you wish to play.
Montana taking out some aggression
On the whole the characters seem very balanced and ultimately it’s all about finding out which of the characters complement each other. For instance, on his own Rath doesn’t pose much of a threat to most players but should he be supplied with a constant stream of health he is a spinning barrage of swords and death! Whereas Marquis, being a sniper at his core, would simply waste a healer’s time and should stay as far away from combat as possible.
When it came to the gameplay itself, I felt the weapon mechanics, surprisingly, to be just as good if not better than a dedicated FPS. Each shot felt like it mattered and was satisfying from the moment the finger hit the trigger to the point of impact. The same goes for those sword and stick wielders! To cut an enemy down in a flurry of darkness and confusion was enough to get me hooked!
Yes Battleborn could be classed as a FPS MOBA on paper but when you get to playing it you realise how much more than that it is. The game features a mode called Meltdown where, like classic MOBAS, you are tasked with escorting your minions to their destination whilst dealing with hostile entities. You will be fighting a range of robotic monstrosities as well as various aggressive and non-aggressive turrets. Amongst all that you have the other players to contend with as you clash head to head in order to… have your own robots eaten by a giant menacing face…
Multiplayer also features a mode called Capture Maps which plays like the classic Capture the Flag game mode. You also get to build useful turrets and healing stations along the way so it really pays to collect those crystals. The turrets are a genuine problem to deal with at times so it’s not just a time waster.
The last game most commonly in play is the Incursion Maps, which sees each team aim to destroy the other team’s giant spider robots. Once a team finishes off both giant death machines it’s game over.
The bottom line is that Battleborn features a huge list of playable characters, each with their own quirks and unique play styles. With so many to choose from you are sure to find a great fit for the way you play.
I love this game and will be spending a lot of time on it in the future. I have no problems giving this game a 9/10. The comedy is classic of Gearbox and the visuals are a real treat. I had a few minor issues with matchmaking but for being so close to release I was surprised there weren’t more.
If you’re a fan of Borderlands then you will be a fan of Battleborn. There are a lot of elements similar with the two but not so similar you don’t feel like you’re getting something new.

Look for the full review that will be coming to Geek Pride soon! Until then, have a look at the announcement trailer:
Further Warning: This review has been identified to potentially trigger rage in people with ‘All Caps Sensitivity’. Reader discretion advised.
Now with that out of the way, let’s get straight to it, because really this is all anyone’s talking about:
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
It’s pretty much what all of us suspected would happen, but were still scared in case the show/GRRM were trolling us. Jon Snow is revived/resurrected/R’hllored at the end of episode two, *cue flailing/crying/happy dancing*.
I was 99.99999% certain this would happen but when the scene takes place it’s such a relief. I had to re-watch it a couple of times to confirm that they actually did it.
I KNEW IT!
I also had to hold my breath through the entire credits too to make sure that Olly wasn’t hiding out in the shadows to put a knife back in him or for the R’hollor magic to false start or something equally awful, but no, it does seem as though he’s back for real. Whether that’s as the Jon Snow who we all know and love or as some kind of Night’s King Exterminating Azor Ahai™, we will have to wait until next week to find out.
What this also means of course is that so many questions about Jon Snow’s character are being raised, but rather than contend with those in this review, it’s worth checking out Matt Geary’s feature which goes into a bit more detail about why Jon needs to be alive.
Okay now that’s the main talking point dealt with, there was still a lot to love about ‘Home’ which puts it in my top ten episodes of the show so far and the 3rd best rated episode on IMDB.
The episode starts with Bran and The Three-Eyed Raven in flashback/waking dream mode at Winterfell. It’s been two years in real time since we’ve seen Bran and physically the actor playing him has changed so much. It would almost be a distraction if we weren’t being shown so many plot Easter Eggs in just one scene. We get young Ned Stark in sword practice with his brother Benjen, young Old Nan and a talking Hodor(!), whose name is really Willis.
Not much because all he can say is ‘Hodor’. Amirite?
We also get an alive Lyanna Stark reminding us heavily of Arya in Season One (sob!) and clearly foreshadowing future events to come. Given that the preview for episode 3 ‘Oathbreaker’ seems to show some scenes at the Tower of Joy we will surely be seeing Lyanna again soon, which means further big plot revelations are imminent. Most people will have heard of the biggest fan theory out there about Jon’s real mother, but it may be that we find this out sooner than any of us could imagine. R + L= J Confirmed?
There’s also a nice bit of exposition involving Meera and one of the Children of the Forest at the end of this sequence. Most of what this scene does is remind us that Meera (Howland Reed!) exists and promises that she’ll have stuff to do in future episodes, but it also means we’ll be seeing Bran away from Bloodraven’s cave soon. In what form is anyone’s guess, but it does raise a lot of questions about his role in the war to come.
At the Wall we’re reaching the end of the line for Davos, Ghost and the Jon loyalists until Wun-Wun and the Wildlings (future band name dibs) make a timely intervention.
Shame it wasn’t Olly
The best part of this scene is seeing the entire Night’s Watch ‘nope’ instantly out of the fight as soon as they realise what’s going on. I also can’t wait to see Alliser Thorne’s face (and the incoming memes) when he’s confronted by the newly resurrected Lord Commander Snow. Longclaw will be back in action and swift Stark justice to be had for Jon’s assassins.
Back at King’s Landing we have more guards hoping they don’t have to face off against monsters: a mourning Cersei and the wonderfully protective Ser Robert Strong.
The first rule of King’s Landing is you don’t talk about Cersei
There’s some great scenes here too. Tommen is afraid that the High Sparrow will put Cersei back in the cells if she attends Myrcella’s funeral. He also blames himself for not stepping in and putting a stop to the High Sparrow before it happened. Jaime is perceptibly warmer with Tommen than he has been in the past which is a good change for his character. I’ve been quite concerned for Jaime since the show diverted away from his book character arc, but I’m interested in seeing where they take him and for what will happen with the High Sparrow and the Faith Militant. Will it be a showdown with the Lannisters?
Back at the Red Keep, Tommen reconciles with Cersei and we start to see a new and perhaps chilling dimension to his character too. I highly doubt Tommen will be a Joffrey clone, but there seems to be more to him now than just being a pawn for Cercei or Margaery.
“[I] should have executed all of them. I should have pulled down the sept onto the High Sparrow’s head before I let them do that to you.” – Tommen, Episode 2 Home
Over the Narrow Sea to Meereen, we’ve also got a contender for second best scene in the episode when Tyrion decides to meet Dany’s dragons, Rhaegal and Viserion and set them free.
I’m friends with your mother
Tyrion has a touching (and frankly terrifying) scene where he releases the dragons from their shackles and recounts how he wanted to own a dragon as young boy. This is the first time we’ve really seen anyone other than Daenerys be close to her dragons and live to tell the tale. The fact that the dragons seem to understand Tyrion’s intentions and let him touch them also feels like some serious foreshadowing for future events (oh hai secret Targaryen!).
“When I was a child, my uncle asked what gift I wanted for my name day. I begged him for one of you. It wouldn’t even have to be a big dragon, I told him. It could be little.. Like me. Everyone laughed like it was the funniest thing they had ever heard. Then my father told me the last dragon had died a century ago. I cried myself to sleep that night. But here you are.” – Tyrion, Episode 2 Home
Over to Braavos with my girl Arya, there’s still not much is happening really. She’s still blind and still inexplicably having the crap beaten out of her by The Waif. As my favourite character in the series I’m really hoping she gets to do something soon as I’m finding her current adventures a bit of a drag. I’m still holding out that Mace Tyrell is still in Braavos and she can find her way back to Westeros soon. A Stark reunion is well overdue.
A girl is tired of this shit
Back up North and to Winterfell and Ramsay ‘Mad Dog‘ Bolton is in contention for King Joffrey’s crown as the most hated character in TV history. I haven’t had to watch Game of Thrones through my fingers since we last saw Oberyn Martell take far too long to kill The Mountain, but I definitely had to do it this episode. Ugh.
First off though, the scene with Roose Bolton getting stabbed was a brilliant flashback to The Red Wedding when Roose killed Robb Stark. At first I thought it was Roose doing the stabbing now that he didn’t need Ramsay as an heir, but it seems that the showrunners are intent on making the younger Bolton the big bad of this season and so we see him dispatch his dear old dad instead in an act of some serious kinslaying.
Personally, I thought this was a waste of such a great character. Roose was one of the major players in the Game of Thrones up until now but his death this episode is yet another sign that the pace for this season has been upped significantly.
Goodnight Sweet Prince :'(
In his first act as ‘I AM LORD BOLTON‘, Ramsay wastes no time in dispatching his mother Fat Walda and his newborn baby brother – no clever gifs here – in what was honestly one of the worst atrocities to happen on the show even if we didn’t see it directly. Big props to the sound design team who were able to conjure up the stuff of nightmares even though the camera cuts away from the carnage.
Hopefully far, far, far away from Ramsay we visit with Sansa and Brienne who speak of Arya and how they plan to go to Castle Black to reunite with Jon, unaware of course of all the events that have been happening there. They also part ways with Theon who says that he wants to go ‘home’. Whether that’s the Iron Islands or Winterfell, I really just hope Theon gets a chance for further redemption and maybe some revenge. It would be great to see him to be the one to kill Ramsey for example.
And so to the Iron Islands we go after not seeing much of them at all since season three. Theon’s father Balon and his sister Yara argue over military action in Westeros. There’s much disagreement (and forshadowing) until Balon storms out only to run into his brother Euron Greyjoy on a precarious rope bridge connecting two towers.
I am the storm, brother. The first storm and the last.
Balon is also swiftly done away with (something the show seems to have no problem doing this season) by Euron who quickly, it seems wants to be in contention with Yara for The Salt Throne (book readers: Salt Throne = Seastone Chair). Why anyone really wants to rule a few islands with little resources is beyond me, but Yara seems to think they have the best fleet in Westeros so maybe that has something to do with it. The Greyjoys played a significant part in the books, so here’s hoping the show can do a better job with them than they have with the Dorne plot-line.
And then we come full circle to The Wall and Jon’s resurrection which I’ve already covered off. I have nothing else to add here other than just how brilliant it was and I still can’t really take in that it’s happened. Welcome back Jon, you were missed, but not really, because we all knew it was a fake out.
Preview for episode 3, Game of Thrones: Oathbreaker
