Thanks to NerdVsWorld for showing us this on Facebook… actually amazing! But yet people have still disliked it on Youtube…WTF people, what else do you want?!

This is a full-resolution version of the NASA Curiosity rover descent to Mars, taken by the MARDI descent imager. As of August 20, all but a dozen 1600×1200 frames have been uploaded from the rover, and those missing were interpolated using thumbnail data. The result was applied a heavy noise reduction, color balance, and sharpening for best visibility.

The video plays at 15fps, or 3x realtime. The heat shield impacts in the lower left frame at 0:21, and is shown enlarged at the end of the video. Image source: http://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/msl/multimedia/raw/?s=0&camera=MARDI

Fun fact: The first mission to Mars, Mariner 4 in 1965, returned a total of 634 kb of data, including 22 photos.

Dust and Sand – Chapter 9 – By Sean P. Wallace

Chapter 9

Penelope Chalmers stood at the centre of her prison and roared “Let me out! Please! Let me out!”

No-one answered. Either they weren’t there or they silently enjoying her desperation.

She sighed. She was being held somewhere damp and vile, somewhere the sun had never seen. The darkness surrounding her was like honey, thick enough to mask her hand when it was an inch from her face. And the walls were always moist to the touch, probably due to the strange, foul-smelling liquid trickling down the corners of the room.

Most of the time, it was like she was in an abyss; there was no sight, no sound. She’d even become accustomed to the smell after… well, some amount of time, so even that no longer distracted her from the void.

With the pervading darkness, Penelope had no way of measuring the time. At least a day must have passed. She didn’t want to entertain the thought it had been any shorter…

The worst of her captivity, though, was the cold; the deep chill of a hate-withered heart. Penelope had been told that Hell was a warm place; somewhere filled with fire and light; an unending assault on the senses and the soul. Pastors and tutors had been very clear on this, warning her of an eternity in the inferno, and her chaplain’s paintings, glass windows and Bible all endorsed this view. Even uneducated folk would say a Texan summer was hotter than Hell, so she wasn’t alone in her belief. But a day in the ice-chill captivity of the man in the dark mask had changed her mind.

The cold assailed her again, brought about shivers she couldn’t stop. Truly, she was in the icy clutches of Hell.

She began to pace to ward it off. But this bleak frigidity tormented her constantly. It seeped into her bones, twisted her muscles and dried out her eyes and tongue. The walls and smooth seemed to be its source as they absorbed all heat; touching them made her body numb as it was eked of its heat by the Stygian stone. She stood as much as possible to avoid touching them but that drained her too, left her to endure that vampiric embrace when she was at her weakest and the freeze could worm into her all the better.

Penelope liked to think herself resolute, someone with the breeding and sophistication to enjoy the fine things in life but who wasn’t above discomfort when the occasion called for it but that had been when riding without a cushion or sharing a hotel room had been her only discomfort. The cold, the smell, the dark and the damp had cut right through her opinion of herself and left her small, frightened and cowardly.

Twice, cold food had been slid into the room. Both times, she’d been terrified, fearing that something awful had been sent to warp her. It had taken minutes to work up enough courage to see what had been delivered. But both times, only meat and bread had been delivered. Penelope considered having some as fuel to stop her shivers but it would rest like an ice block in her stomach so she decided against it for now.

The food proved that her captors weren’t willing to let the cold sap her slowly. So did the trials they sent her; three times demons had whispered to her, taunted her with her hidden fears when she was at a low ebb. And then, maybe three hours ago, there had been these… other noises. Horrible and vile and terrifyingly enticing noises, the sounds of a queer revelry that she found herself longing to join.

She feared her resolve would not last long against those temptations.

Penelope shook her head as she paced around her prison, in a rough circle. From the smooth, cave-like walls and the revelry above her, she assumed she was underground. The cavity wasn’t man-made; she’d explored the room fully and it had no supports, no straight surfaces save the fourth wall which led out into the corridor. A door was set into that wall, metallic, tightly-barred and locked in three places. She was likely in an abandoned mine or some Indian caves, somewhere people would never think to look.

Not until it was too late…

She’d had her eyes closed for hours to ward off the cold so unseen tears formed against her lids, residue of an emotion she hadn’t summoned. Fearing they might freeze on her cheek, she wiped them on the sleeve of her dress.

Despair had not been too far away recently. Not after what had happened…

As a lady was wont to do, Penelope flipped from despair to anger. Anger at Senator Martins; after all, this was his damn fault! Senator Martins never threw parties. He was not a socialite, not someone on the map. But out of the blue he’d thrown one two nights ago and that was when everything went wrong.

How a playboy model made digital imaging what it is today

1

You may have seen recently the report about how scientists from the Singapore based Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) have been able to print an image just 50 micrometres across, at 100,000 dots per inch which is ten times that of your high end home printer. Which is amazing and interesting but not what intrigues about this story. (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-19260550)

It was the image these scientists printed that caught my eye and, having some time to waste, I decided to find out more. I am actually surprised with the lack of details I can find, main sources are some websites from the nineties and of course Wikipedia, but nonetheless I shall share with you what I discovered.

The lady in question is Lena Soderberg a Swedish model who posed for the centrefold in the November 1972 issue of Playboy, shot by photographer Dwight Hooker. This image, commonly named ‘Lenna’, went on to become important part of geek science history.

The story goes that in the summer of 1973 Alexander Sawchuk, an assistant professor of electric engineering  at the USC Signal and Image Processing Institute, was hastily looking for an image to scan for a presentation. He had grown bored of the usual test images and wanted something glossy, human, with a variety of contrasting shades. Then in walks a colleague with a copy of the aforementioned Playboy issue and the centrefold was perfect. Who can blame him? It is a beautiful example of the female form and this girl is striking. The top third of the image was scanned, and used, a move which secured its place in the history of digital imaging.

Following the presentation the image began to be handed out by USC researchers to test compression and encoding algorithms and has been used ever since as a test standard for digital image processing.  I know amazing right? Walking around the office reading a Playboy, kudos to the seventies.

Lena Soderberg the model, often referred to as the first lady of the internet, was completely unaware of the role her centrefold had played in science until she was interviewed in 1988 for a Swedish computer publication, during which she was said to be ‘pleasantly amused’ by what her picture had become.

An image that is so much a part of the history of digital imaging that the Society For Imaging Science and Technology tracked Lena down, with a little help from Playboy, and invited her to attend their 50th annual Conference of the Society for Imaging Science and Technology. Considered a celebrity among the science geeks she spent her time signing autographs and meeting her fans. Interviewed at the conference by Wired she said “They must be so tired of me … looking at the same picture for all these years!”

Just think about this for a second, a photograph was taken to be sold as smut, to be perved over or admired for its beauty, but instead became an essential research tool in the development of digital imaging technology and is still being used nearly forty years later. So really you could go on the say that it is Lena Soderberg who is to blame for all arty shots of peoples meals that continue to flood our Instagram feeds.

For those if you curious to see the full image NSFW: http://www.lenna.org/full/len_full.html and I’ll leave you with this poem written by an anonymous admirer:

“0 dear Lena, your beauty is so vast
It is hard sometimes to describe it fast.
I thought the entire world I would impress
If only your portrait I could compress.
Alas! First when I tried to use VQ
I found that your cheeks belong to only you.
Your silky hair contains a thousand lines
Hard to match with sums of discrete cosines.
And for your lips, sensual and tactual
Thirteen Crays found not the proper fractal.
And while these setbacks are all quite severe
I might have fixed them with hacks here or there
But when wavelets took sparkle from your eyes
I said, “Skip this stuff. I’ll just digitize.”

GEEK OF THE WEEK # 5 Karin McClure

[box_light]If you would like to be our next Geek of the Week then get in contact with us on facebook or email us @ [email protected] and tell us why you deserve the honour… photos and vids help btw![/box_light][box_light][/box_light]
It is Geek Pride’s great pleasure to announce to you that, KARIN MCCLURE, is this weeks
GEEK OF THE WEEK!
Karin is 23, from the UK and  first came onto Geek Pride’s Radar with a picture she sent us of her lego collection (How impressed are you??!!) After a chat, It then transpired that she also dabbled in a bit of Cosplay and was making a Black Widow costume, this we had to see, so we  persuade her to come along to our first Geek Pride Cosplay photo shoot…and she did!

Check out the photos and what she had to say below!

1. Geek of the week… how does that work for ya?

Me? Geek of the week?! Wow 😀 Not ashamed to admit that’s made my day!

2. So lego, how did the love affair start?

I remember my parents got me a lego zoo one Christmas when I was about 7/8 and I think that’s what sparked my interest it in. I’ve never really collected the models (partly due to my lack of pennies) but I got hooked on collecting minifigures as soon as they started being sold. Everytime I go shopping I need to buy one, not want to, NEED to……..I have a problem 😛

3. The picture you sent is rather impressive. Is that your whole collection or have you got more.

That picture shows most of my collection, there’s about 10 more that have had to move to another shelf as I ran out of room, and there’s a Harry Potter night bus there too. I did have a big Buzz Lightyear but in an unfortunate moving incident he fell apart and I haven’t yet been able to locate the manual to rebuild him 🙁

4. What’s your favourite piece and why?

I have 2 favourites, 1 being yoda dressed as Santa. He was behind door number 24 on my Lego Star Wars advent calendar last year, I love Yoda, lego and Christmas so that’s definitely my favourite. I also love my Braveheart-esque Scottish highlander minifigure (he’s at the front on the picture, next to buzz lightyear) I’m Scottish and proud and I think he sums up my Scottish spirit rather well. “Freeedommmmmm” etc.

5. Collect anything else?

There isn’t anything else I actively collect. I collect games (PS3 mainly) though that’s just due to being a gamer girl geek 😛

6. I believe you are also a Cosplayer, What characters have you dressed up as and what would you like to dress up as?

I’ve only recently got into Cosplay, though I suppose I kind of started a few years back when I made a Big Daddy costume to wear for my sister’s birthday (I am an uber Bioshock fan). I still have it somewhere, though it’s probably falling to bits by now. I am currently working on a Black Widow (Iron Man 2) costume, as well as Catwoman (DKR). I’ve been told I have a slight resemblance to Scarlett Johansson’s as black widow so I decided to give it go. I’ve also been told I look like Amy Pond from Doctor Who so maybe I’ll dress as her sometime too.

7. Anything you want to add?

I’ve been a bit of a closet geek for the past few years and I decided enough was enough and it was time to embrace all things geeky. Thanks for making me geek of the week, tis rather splendid 🙂

Panty and Stocking with Garter belt: A review. (English SUBS) By Kelly Royle

Panty and Stocking with Garter belt: A review. (English SUBS)

Anime with a taste of westernization; Imagine the power puff girls, invader zim and goth loli got shat on by south park.

Let me break it down.  We have two fallen angels (Panty and Stocking), who live in a city on the fault line between heaven and hell,  and whose only chance of gaining entrance again to the pearly gates is by killing ‘ghosts,’ who terrorize the city, and earning coins known as ‘heavens’;  Ghosts are evil spirits of the dead who gain powers through their spite.

Panty is an angel with a sex addiction whose main goal is to sleep with 1000 men on the surface and can turn her knickers (bizarrely)  into a gun named ‘blacklace’.  Her sister, Stocking, is a goth loli and sugar maniac who tries to eat as many sweets as humanly possible and can turn her stockings into katanas called stipe1 and stripe2. The oddities of this cartoon do not stop there of course as they both drive in a car called ‘see through,’  are helped by hints from heaven, transferred by lightening to a zipper-dog named chuck and are the encumbrance of an afro priest (called Garter Belt) with a severe S and M problem!

Panty and Stocking do not take their ghost hunting task seriously and show more concern to their hobbies of collecting men, sweets and trouble; they prefer to spend Garter belts’ money than earn their own, leading to an argument which results in amusing consequences and fan service in episode 7.

These strange but likeable characters  are backed up with typical comic-esq written sound effects and speech, as well as an animation style that lends itself, or satires even (in the titles and credits )  western films; such as fight club, high school musical, pulp fiction, transformers, dawn of the dead and others. Nothing is safe.

Interesting concept, but how do I rate it as an anime?

Well If you watch anime for the pretty pictures then this is not the anime to watch. The animation style, in my opinion, leaves a lot to be desired and the humour is crude, so  if you prefer a witty riposte this will not be your cup of tea, but I think that is why I like it; it is just plain weird!

I don’t really see PSG as an anime, I see it as a parody of western culture, but still love it for what it is. To me it’s a fun jaunt, ridiculously hilarious and is easy to follow; an anime for a lazy night in. With only 13 episodes in the series it’s definitely worth a watch and with a few silly specials floating around the internet it is a gift that keeps giving. I can guarantee you will either love it or hate it, but If you are anything like me and prefer an eclectic mix and don’t mind the rude, crude and just plain lewd PSG is a resounding LOVE!
