Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeros

25 years of Stealthy Gaming and Hideo Kojima is still at it.  His latest instalment, of the genre defining series, is free roaming,  will be multi- platform and uses a new FOX gaming engine. All very exciting stuff for the MGS fans out there, but don’t take my word for it.

Find out more, direct from Kojimas mouth and watch an 11 minute preview of the game itself,  in the video below; filmed at the recent Pax expo, I give to you :

REASONS WHY I WILL DIE IN A ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE!

0

Ever wondered what your chances of survival are in the zombie apocalypse? What am I talking about? Of course you have and so have I and I always consider myself to have absorbed sufficient knowledge and know how to be able to survive when zombies flood our world. I’ve seen the films, read the guides, discussed and put in place a plan with  my mates. Though I’ve not gone as far as storing tins of canned food, bottled water and heavy weaponry,  I still feel confident. That was until I watched walking dead, had some disturbing dreams and really sat down and thought about it. So here are the reasons I would be zombie brunch quite quickly:

“Err no thanks I’ll chew on this carpet, thanks though”

1. I’M A FUSSY EATER.

Really I am, I live with the hope that should this scenario become a reality, that I put my petty dislikes a side, but it’s not something I can imagine. Surviving on canned food is one thing, I think I could probably cope with cold beans and stag chilli. But when it came to catching fish cos it’s the only well supplied source of protein, well I’m out. I may as well starve cos I’ll just puke that stuff up.  It would make more sense to give mine to someone who isn’t going to waste it by decorating the floor.

2.       I’M SHORT.We all know the only way to kill a zombie is destroying the brain, which is fine…as long as the zombies aren’t over 5ft11. I am 5ft4, average for woman which means in a world where everyone else is zombie, over half, if you take into consideration the average mans height, would be taller than me (or some maths like that, not my strongest subject). Yes I could go for the old hit them in the legs till they’re on the floor and then bash their heads in, but this plan means zombies kills take at least twice as long which brings me onto my next reason…

3.       I’M UNFIT

Run fool, RUN!

If Zombieland has taught me anything, its check Bill Murray is actually a zombie before you kill him and, more importantly, CARDIO! I’m not very fit, running  long distances, if at all,  is something I avoid yet is essential in dead man walking survival. I look awkward running, boobs get in the way, I have to stop every few seconds to have a puff of my inhaler. Basically, if I have to run for longer than 3 minutes I’ll pretty  much give up. C’mon zombie and freaking well eat I’m too tired to care!

 4.       I’M PRETTY CERTAIN I CAN’T KILL MY LOVED ONES

It is an unavoidable and sad truth that this apocalypse will probably result in you having to beat the unliving daylights out of the head of a loved one.  My personality tends to lean to towards emotional wreck, I cried at the trailer for the last episode of Friends, I cried for an hour or more after City of Angels and I cry at any touching scene featuring a parent and child. So to even consider for a moment having to ‘take care’ of my own bitten children to prevent them becoming brain eating dead people is preposterous. Not gonna happen.  I would rather join them as their undead rotting mother than do this unthinkable act. I can only hope that the quiet and mysterious loner type that has joined our group of survivors, who barely says a word, will step up and take care of it.  A scenario in which he proves himself badass and a bitter sweet hero.

Still soooo cute

So all in all I’ve got about 3-6 months, unless of course I can prove myself in someway useful in a group of survivors. Hmmm may be I should take up medicine…

Whedon is making Marvel more awesome!

0

Joss Whedon

Last week, whilst on holiday in Wales, there was a rare moment where I had good signal capable of connecting me to the world of the internets, something I was sorely missing. In this brief moment of connection I discovered the news that the most awesome and worship worthy Joss Whedon is going to be heading up Marvel new tv show S.H.E.I.L.D, cue cheers and whoops! I even ran into the other room to inform my other half.

Now I am a Whedonite, I mean Buffy, Angel, and of course the most revered, cancelled before its time, best cowboy in space series Firefly. You can’t not love him, he makes stories about characters, makes us care and invest in them and then turns it on its head to shock and leave us wanting more. Plus Avengers. I admit I was worried about Avengers on the big screen, because it had to be done right and that was a enormous challenge for any director but, my god, he pulled it out the bag and then some. So to hear that he will be working on Marvels S.H.E.I.L.D reassures me that if it can be done well, he will do it.

What also comforts me is that fact that he is so openly excited about his projects. He is geek just like me and he has the weapons and talent to influence all of geek culture and is a avid supporter of strong female characters that kick just as much ass as the males. To a girl geek like me he is a hero. I can’t really think of  a better person for the job.

Unfortunately a full blown series is not a guarantee, Joss has been quoted as saying:

“I can’t guarantee that any of that will happen… They might give us all the support and then not do that, but then audiences might go, ‘Yeahhh … no.’ You just can’t be sure. What I do know is that it’s the show it should be, and we’ve got some really dope notions.” Entertainmentwise.com

If Whedon says it is going to be ‘dope’ I need no more convincing.  ABC would be foolish not to give it a fair chance. After the success of Avengers networks should be falling over themselves to make Marvel world TV.

Even more exciting in all this is that Joss has signed to Marvel for 3 years for movie and TV projects. Already announced as staying for Avengers 2, he is also going to be involved in other cinematic Marvel projects. I love the idea of this, hopefully he will bring some continuity to the Marvel-verse and bring the world we love and have read about in comics for year to life as a visual spectacular.

So there it is! Whedon joining Marvel only means good things, his repeated successes of the past almost guarantee S.H.E.I.L.D will be awesome. If, by some remote chance, its not then I will look to the fat cat executives who will have no doubt tied the hands of the genius that is our Joss.

Don’t Get Mad, Get Even… Samsung pay Apple $1Bn fine in 5 cent coins *HOAX*

0

I work for an insurance company and spend a lot of my life dealing with unsavoury characters / solicitors who’s only aim in life is to rinse us, and therefore you, the punter, of your hard earned cash.  Now I can understand people are just trying to make a living, but one trait that really irks me is when you pay the solicitor for winning a case ( I don’t like losing) but forget to add the 23p on the end, you then get a snotty email or letter requesting said 23p! To which our general reply is to send a compliments slip with 23p’s worth of 1 p coins taped to it and our kindest regards…. not that we are bitter.

But what does this have to do with Samsung and Apple I hear you say? Well Samsung, as many of you all know, have recently had to pay a $1bn fine to Apple for patent / trade dress  infringements (check out more on this here), which, begrudgingly they have done… BUT, and here comes the link, as it was not stipulated how the payment should be made, the CEO of Samsung, Lee Kun-Hee, sent Apple 30 trucks full

of 5 cent pieces, 20 billion 5 cents in total, to their head office!

You can use your coins to buy refreshments at the little machine for life or melt the coins to make computers, that’s not my problem, I already paid them and fulfilled the law.

A total of 20 billion coins, delivery hope to finish this week.

He who laughs last and all that, evil South Korean Geniuses, I bet they did an Ace Ventura after that legendary move! Question is, where did they get that many 5 cent pieces!?

Check out the whole story here on Paperblog

****UPDATE – and no sooner is this up than I am informed it is a hoax… booo (that’ll teach me not to do my research! )

Thanks to Brendan from NerdVsworld for pointing this out!

Dust and Sand – Chapter 10 – By Sean P. Wallace

Chapter 10

Dust and Naismith rode hard for the rest of the day. The Paints had stayed together along a circuitous route, one which would have taken them a week to follow. But Dust knew Paints, knew how they moved, and so could trace a straight line through their meander.

They were well on their way to finding Penelope Chalmers, he could feel it. But the sun began to set just when Dust noticed that the Paint’s tracks had started joining with older sets. They were so close but had to stop; taking Naismith through the Badlands at night would’ve been the same as wrapping his hands round her neck.

So he led them to a plateau halfway-up a small mountain, reached into his bag and pulled their tent out. A large canvas with spells written across it, pierced by four poles, its structure was simple but effective. Each pole had been carved from the crucifixes of executed men. Wrapped around them was wire of indeterminate metal, probably copper.

“We’ll set up camp here,” he said.

Naismith shrugged. She was slumped, had deep bags under her eyes. “Okay.”

The Badlands were an oddly-shaped tumour. In some places, they were barely a mile thick but others were almost a hundred miles wide. And the boundaries always shifted as eldritch creatures killed one another or migrated according to their own designs. The Solution had a whole team dedicated to redefining the safe zone every month, a report which businesses like the TTC and locals always awaited with extreme interest. This unpredictability meant the Solution couldn’t know whether Dust and Naismith would have to sleep in the Badlands, a dangerous endeavour without the proper equipment. So they’d been packed with this ‘special’ tent.

And they would have to share it. The tent was plenty roomy but it had to fit Horse and Naismith’s ride too so they’d be packed in pretty tightly. Dust didn’t enjoy the prospect; he hadn’t been in such close proximity with a woman he disliked for… well, since he’d learned to handle his drink.

But needs must. Dust rolled off Horse and drove the poles into the plateau’s soil. After checking the poles were each firmly in place, he threw the canvas over them. The canvas seemed to expand as it unfurled, as though being folded had hidden its bulk, and it settled like icing on a cake, soft and pliant. Dust then arranged it so the right spells were over the right poles and tied the copper wire to the poles, forming a square to close the magic.

Apart from the spells, the tent was not remarkable; it was roughly the same colour as the sandstone mountain, tall enough to admit Horse without him having to duck and just as wide and deep. The canvas had two shrubs painted onto each face, not masterpieces but they’d suffice at range. It almost looked like any other survival tent.

Naismith maintained her weapon whilst Dust built the tent. Dust looked up and her rifle was open as she cleaned it out, made sure that what should be greased was and what shouldn’t be greased wasn’t. It was prudent. Dust approved.

He checked the tent one last time then grabbed Horse’s rein. “Come on boy, in you go.”

Horse gave a soft whinny when they were inside. Like Horse, Dust still found it impressive; the geniuses hadn’t earned their nickname by playing about.

The tent was bigger inside than it ought to be; twelve feet by twelve feet of room had been squeezed inside. There was a small staging area first which had just enough room for two horses and a humble sleeping quarter that lay beyond, which would just about fit the two of them. It was taller than it ought to be too; Dust couldn’t reach the ceiling unless he jumped.

Naismith led her ride inside, then wrinkled her nose. “Where’s the rest of it?” she asked.

“There isn’t any.”

She scoffed. “Then where are you going to sleep?”

He pointed over to the sleeping quarter. “In there.”

Naismith looked at the small canvas room and then back at him. “No you’re not.”

Dust led Horse over to the small ‘stable’ and gave him quick pat to tell him to stay put. Horse relaxed. He knew his day was over. Dust wished his was too.

“I’m not too thrilled with it either,” he said.

“And why not?”

He nearly smiled. That was women for you; she’d been furious at the thought of sharing a bed with him and now she was just as angry that he didn’t want to. Dust wanted to point that out. He didn’t.

“It’s only for a couple of nights,” he said, gently stroking Horse. “We’ve got sleeping bags.”

Naismith sniffed. “I suppose it’ll have to do.”

He gripped Horse, who tensed and gave Dust a disapproving look. His tattoo warned him with a painful shudder. Dust smiled apologetically and patted Horse twice.

“It’s settled then,” Dust said.

He left the tent before Naismith could respond.

Why no Wonder Woman film?

2

I am very disappointed and I’ll explain why?

Let me take you back to the mid 80’s when the summers were always hot and it never rained, and children would play out all day not worrying about the possibility of being kidnapped by some depraved paedophile and the fabulous Lynda Carter was starring in The New Adventures of Wonder Woman on British TV.

I was about 5, 6 maybe and I loved Wonder Woman, (and still do). I spent my summer holidays spinning and spinning and pretending to be the Amazon. My mum even made me an outfit. Looking back now, what a great role model, a female superhero kicking ass in a male dominated world.

20 odd years on and I am very disappointed by the continuing sexism in the superhero movie industry. Both Batman and Superman have been well represented in the film industry, both have been re-booted at least once so where oh where is my live action Wonder Woman film??

I have read many rumours of a film over the past few years, but none have seemed to have come to fruition. I have recently read an article stating that one the problem was her costume, it being outdated,  which is just ridiculous (giant bat and man who wear underpants on the outside) or its sexual exploitation (for god’s sake have they watched music videos these days?  the likes of Lady Gaga are, for all intents and purpose, naked and writhing around simulating sex on the male dancers, which apparently is ok for airing during the day when children are watching (but that is a whole other rant).

I am, however, very pleased with the Wonder Woman animated film and would welcome more, however I fail to understand the lack of live action. Even now they are making superhero films with lesser known (to the general, non geek, public) superheroes like Green Lantern and Thor. Don’t get me wrong, I welcome these along with Captain America and The Avengers but goddam it where is the lead female superhero.

Kick Ass featured the awesome Hit Girl but not without a bucket load of controversy, and I don’t feel the X-Men films did any of the female heroes justice. I can only hope the X-Men: First Class will do a better job representing its ladies. Electra was quite disappointing and as for Catwoman well I don’t really need to go into why that bombed. I fail to think of any others at this point, which obviously means they were not good enough to remain in my head.

Furthermore, I sat down and watched Batman Superman: Apocalypse, not so long ago and I came away with two thoughts,

1. It should be spelt Apokolips, and I’m not sure how they got that so wrong.

2.Why wasn’t it called Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman: Apokolips (Yes I have corrected the spelling, I’m kind a stickler for that). Wonder Woman practically appeared in it as much as the two blokes, yet gets missed from the title. Do they think people would not buy it, if it featured her name? I just don’t get it.

All you have to do is look around the Internet and shops, Wonder Woman merchandise is everywhere, her comic continues, so it must sell well and therefore have a secure fan base. Surely fear of it being hated by the fans isn’t enough to stop them. The industry has produced both Batman and Superman films that suck (Batman and Robin just being one example) and not forgetting emo Spiderman. Geeks watch it anyway and it hasn’t stopped ‘them’ making more with the same hero.

Just to clarify my hairy legs are due to it being a tired working mum who has been married a long time, who wears trousers all the time and its winter. I am by no means a feminist out protesting for equal rights at every opportunity, who is down on society because it is male dominated, things have and will continue to get better.  But I truly hope that the lack of lead role female superheroes in the world of film it is not down to sexism.  I thought we were past that, but the more I think about it the more it plays on my mind. I welcome the industry to prove me wrong and I can only hope that the reason is as simple as not being able to find an actress who can live up to the icon that is Wonder Woman.
