Cosplayer Interview #1 Svetlana Quindt AKA Kamui

Blog: http://www.kamuicosplay.com/
FB : http://www.facebook.com/KamuiCos
Twitter:  https://twitter.com/KamuiCosplay

Our first Cosplayer hails from Germany, is called Svetlana (AKA Kamui) and has some of the best looking costumes I have ever seen; all made by her fair hand no less. Mostly Blizzard inspired, they are detailed, well crafted and simply look fantastic!

But that’s not what impresses me most about Svetlana, no sir. Yes her costumes and work ethic are second to none but her finest quality, apart from being super nice, is the fact that she is extremely helpful in aiding others achieve similar results, through in-depth blogs and video tutorials.

(its in German but you get the point)

Now some people, and I think I would be the same, would hide away such top secret information and just parade around in their awesome new armour, but Svetlana is not a selfish creature, far from it. Her gift to other cosplayers is her talents and she is more than happy to share these with everyone.

Her blogs and videos are created with every facet of the hobby in mind and give you step by step guides on how to make everything; from armour, to glowing gemstones and all are done with greatest care and attention.

With such ability, Svetlana was an obvious choice as one of Geek Prides first Cosplay interviews, and so, without further ado, I give to you….

 The Gal behind the costume

So tell us a bit about yourself. We know you are from Germany and know English better than some of the English people I work with, but what do you work as when you aren’t cosplaying? Got any pets?  A boyfriend? What do you do for fun? You into  Gaming, music, movies?
My name is Svetlana Quindt and I’m a Cosplayer from Germany. Since I’m pretty bad in sewing and love bulky and huge costumes, I specialized in armour cosplay. As a big fan of Blizzard games, so I mainly create costumes from World of Warcraft or Diablo III, but also other video games like Aion for example. Luckily cosplay is also a huge part of my job: I perform as Vanessa VanCleef for Cryptozoic Enteratainment at all official events in Europe.

I like to spend my free time with some of these Blizzard games, enjoy a nice movie with my husband or just hang out with my friends. Cosplay is pretty much my main hobby and since I’m still a student I have enough free time for my very time consuming costumes.
A lot of your costumes are WoW costumes, do you play it still? Im guessing you are a PC gamer then?

Yeah, after a pretty long break I’m playing again and already really looking forward to the next expansion, Mists of Pandaria. At the moment I don’t have so much stress with my costumes anymore, so MoP will just release at the best time.

You study “technical journalism,” sounds awesome, what does that consist of?

It’s a combination of journalism and many technical aspects of different engineering studies. So we have a wide range of topics to learn and it’s pretty varied. However, I don’t think that I want to write for a technical publication in my future. I want to do something creative and hope for a job, where I can use the skills I learned in my hobby already.

I am guessing with a degree such as the above you will not be cosplaying /modelling all your life; what plans have you got for the future? Any goals or ideas that you would like to bring to life?

No, surely not. Despite of that I would love to get a job in a special effect studio, work for movies or theatres and just be able to keep being creative and bring something to live. But that’s just a wish and I still have no idea, what I will do in one year. I will fight for my dreams, but at the moment just everything can happen.

I play, You play, Lets Cosplay!

dsc1962-edit-1Cosplay is something I have known about for a while now, but it is only in the last year or so that I have really got to understand, appreciate and enjoy it on all its different levels.

Ok that’s nice, but what is it?

Description, as yoinked from Wikipedia:
short for “costume play”,[1] is a type of performance art in which participants don costumes and accessories to represent a specific character or idea. Cosplayers often interact to create a subculture centred on role play. A broader use of the term “cosplay” applies to any costumed role play in venues apart from the stage, regardless of the cultural context.

Favorite sources include manga and anime, comic books, video games and films. Any entity from the real or virtual world that lends itself to dramatic interpretation may be taken up as a subject. Inanimate objects are given anthropomorphic forms and it is not unusual to see genders switched, with women playing male roles and vice versa. There is also a subset of cosplay culture centered around sex appeal, with cosplayers specifically choosing characters that are known for their attractiveness and/or revealing (even explicit) costumes.

The Internet has enabled many cosplayers to create social networks and websites centred around cosplay activities, while forums allow them to share stories, photographs, news and tips. The exponential growth in the number of people picking up cosplay as a hobby since 1990 has made the phenomenon influential in popular culture. This is particularly the case in Asia where cosplay influences Japanese street fashion and popular culture

But  for me it is the epitome of Geekdom, like what coming out might be like for a gay person ( in a way), standing up and showing people who they truly are, saying; I’M A GEEK AND I’M PROUD OF IT and finally being who they wish to be.

Not only are cosplayers brave for doing what they do, risking ridicule and mockery from others, who don’t understand,  they are also very talented craftsmen / artists, and from the ones I have talked to, extremely interesting and dedicated  people; the amount of Man / Woman hours that go into some of these costumes is truly mind blowing and the commitment…. something worthy of epic poetry and song.

It is because of this new found respect for these Heros of geekdom that I have been emailing round the world furiously, to try and find a bit more about what makes cosplayers tick.

Over the next week or so (depending on how many get back to me!) I shall be bringing to you a series of interviews, delving into the mindset and lives of some of the world’s best Cosplayers!

For the time being enjoy the vid and the pics; also if you want to see an awesome site dedicated to the awesome ladies of Cosplay then you cant go wrong with our friends at Sexy Cosplay Girls

UK’s first Klingon Wedding!

0

Destination Star Trek is in full flow in London. It is the first Star Trek dedicated convention in over a decade to take place in Britain. So if you are a Star Trek fan and you wanna get married there is no better place to be.  Sonnie Gustavsson, 29, and Jossie Sockertopp, 23  travelled from their native Sweden to do just that Klingon stylee. The couple who met four years ago, adorned themselves in full make up and the traditional ceremonial Klingon garb and were married by celebrant Peter Wyllie in the language of Klingon. Hats of to the bloke, he learned the guttural alien tongue just for this. “That was a bit of a challenge and I hope I got some of the sounds right. I had it written phonetically, so that made it a little easier,” Wyllie admitted.

Inspired by the wedding of Worf and Dax in DS9 episode ‘You are cordially invited’ (clip below) they recreated the ceremony including entering to the three bangs of the gong, had the Klingon drums and stood aside a 3 metre statue of the Klingon God. Presented with a sword by the best man, the couple took part in the mock battle representing the struggle of the male and female heart against one another. “We saw the clip from the series…and we thought it was very romantic about beating hearts and a battle for each other. We really liked it, that’s why we want to do this,” Sockertopp said. The Klingon creation myth was read as vows in both Klingon and English:

“With fire and steel did the gods forge the Klingon heart. So fiercely did it beat, so loud was the sound, that the gods cried out, ‘On this day we have brought forth the strongest heart in all the heavens. None can stand before it without trembling at its strength.’ But then the Klingon heart weakened, its steady rhythm faltered and the gods said, ‘Why do you weaken so? We have made you the strongest in all of creation.’

And the heart said… ‘I am alone.’
And the gods knew that they had erred. So they went back to their forge and brought forth another heart.
But the second heart beat stronger than the first, and the first was jealous of its power. Fortunately, the second heart was tempered by wisdom.
‘If we join together, no force can stop us.’

And when the two hearts began to beat together, they filled the heavens with a terrible sound. For the first time, the gods knew fear. They tried to flee, but it was too late. The Klingon hearts destroyed the gods who created them and turned the heavens to ashes. To this very day, no one can oppose the beating of two Klingon hearts.”

It’s pretty romantic really and although the couple didn’t have any relatives present the fact that it was witnessed by a mass of Trekkies many of which were cosplaying a variety of celebrated characters, makes the whole thing even more awesome. To top it off the couple cut a Borg cube 3 tiered cake and lead the audience in a blessing of ‘yln’ (life), ‘bathlh’ (honour) and ‘qapla’  (success).

The clip that inspired the happy Trekkie couple, Worf marries science officer Jadzia Dax in a traditional Klingon ceremony.

Hands On With Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance

Hideo Kojima’s latest offering to the Metal Gear series dials down the stealth in favor of action, but does it pay off?

I admit; I’ve never paid too much attention to Konami’s Metal Gear series. I am not a stealthy gamer; I’m far too impatient for that, and the hour-long cut scenes the series is renowned for is not my idea of playing a game, I’d just rather watch a movie.

Bearing all that in mind, my first impressions of Metal Gear Rising blew me away.

Let me clarify that for a second; it blew me away because, in the half hour I spent with the game, I never snuck or hid once. Not for a second. It was action and combat almost beginning to end. And the combat was very impressive indeed. This is down to Hideo Kojima passing development from Kojima Productions to Platinum Games; famed for titles such as Bayonetta and Vanquish, have clearly put their signature on the game, and have re branded the classic “Tactical Espionage Action” series to “Lightning Bolt Action”. Kojima, however, has still made sure the series stays true at least in part, by spending a lot of time developing the artistic style, story and characters.

The demo started by throwing me right into a VR Training area, where I was shown how to use what is to be Raiden’s main go-to weapon in the game; his Katana. Basic combat is fairly straight forward, seemingly taking a leaf from the hack ‘n slash school of combat. Hold down the left shoulder button, however, and Raiden will stand still and raise his Katana above his head, while the camera pans round to look over his shoulder. A line appears on the HUD, showing the arc his sword would take, and by manipulating the camera and his hold on the sword, you can direct exactly how he swings his sword yourself. You can even chain multiple slashes together, and enter bullet time, but you cannot move while doing it. Time also doesn’t slow down, and it can be a little clumsy to use, especially when enemies are falling to the floor, but soon enough I was turning VR boxes and wooden dummies into multiple piles of rubble; satisfyingly so.

Soon enough, I had completed the training and I was thrust into the middle of a complex and typically Kojima-esque plot, involving a humanity that has broken free of control of “The Patriots”, and as such has made bounding advances in technology, specifically cybernetics. AI controlled robots are common, as are cyborgs, like Raiden, who are considered normal and human. Indeed, all the human enemies I encountered in the game were cybernetically altered in some way. After a lengthy cutscene and explanation with only minimal musing on the meaning of life, Raiden is dropped into a war torn city and shown his objective, which was clearly intended to be secondary to the action, as by the time I had navigated the flight of steps I was dropped in front of, I was already pounced upon by the first enemies in the game, not even given the opportunity to sneak round them, or evade their attention.

As I mentioned, the combat is nothing new, and has a very hack ‘n slash feel to it, with heavy and light attacks, the odd dodge and counter where needed, and even a ranking system as well. The “Blade Mode”, when you get a chance to use it, is satisfyingly fun as well. It is extremely accurate and responsive, and if you land a hit it seems to guarantee to cut through almost anything in one stroke; guaranteeing a kill, at least on human enemies. I did use it sparingly however, as it does consume energy to use and Raiden stands still while in this mode, leaving him vulnerable.

The main way Blade Mode is meant to be used is to gain more health. If Raiden adequately slices and dices an enemy, he will actually be able to reach into their bodies and pull out their augmented body parts, which he can “drink” to heal himself. There is no doubt plenty of material in that one feature to warrant an internal monologue about morality; and I’m sure that humans and technology will be a major theme in the course of the story.

If I’m completely honest, there was some sneaking involved in the preview, although it was a very straightforward affair. The primary tool involved is Raiden’s visor, that can see through walls and structures, and highlight enemies. From there, you can decide how to engage them, or avoid them. There are no minimaps, and no cones representing an enemies’ field of view, and as far as I could tell, there was no way to peacefully neutralize them, either. The only prompt that appeared when I walked behind an enemy was the kill button, which, makes Raiden spectacularly drive his Katana straight through an enemy’s chest to kill him in one sweep. One thing I noticed, was that although I did this around 4 times, each time it was the same kill animation. I couldn’t say if this was just something confined to the preview, but I would like to have seen at least a couple more animations, for variety’s sake. I can see that one getting old quickly.

Dishonored – 9GPPs

straight to the point  – A great stealth game, which has both style and substance. A well designed, must-have title

I remember first seeing some screenshots of this game about a year ago and being intrigued by it just on the steampunk design alone. It has been hyped up to the max on the internet ever since. Games this hyped up often lead to massive disappointment. The question is though, is this an exception? Thankfully the answer is a big yes!!!

Set in the fictional industrial city of Dunwall, modeled after Victorian London and heavily affected by a rat plague, Dishonored follows Corvo Attano, a legendary bodyguard to the Empress who is framed for her murder and forced to become an assassin to seek revenge on those who conspired against him and to rescue Emily, the daughter of the Empress and rightful heir to the throne, who is kidnapped at the time of the murder. Corvo is aided in his quest by the Outsider, a powerful being who imbues him with magical abilities.

The gameplay takes heavily from Deus Ex: Human Revolution. It is primarily a stealth game, which gives the player path choices and to make decisions, which will affect the story and to either to take a passive or aggressive approach to each mission. Like the upgrading augments element in Deus Ex, the player can upgrade their equipment and buy new abilities. Even the creeping up behind guards, knocking them out and hiding their bodies is there, although that it a staple element in stealth games these days. On top of that it adds magical/supernatural abilities and a retro/steampunk setting reminiscent of Bioshock (the developer, Arkane Studios also contributed to Bioshock 2 so that might have something to do with it). Also, it has the ammo rationing element of the Resident Evil series.

The aim of each mission is usually to break into a heavily guarded building or area of a city and either kill or passively eliminate a character, responsible for your character’s current predicament. The great thing is, you can take different approaches to each task and different paths depending on what suits you.

It is possible to fight your way into a building at times, killing anybody or anything , which stands in your way but this may affect the outcome of story in a negative way and the next mission may have more weepers, which are plague victims who have become mindless zombies, due to less city guards. The trick is to get from A to B without even being spotted. if you do kill someone, they shouldn’t see you coming.

Thankfully you have a few things to help you out. Using Corvo’s magical/supernatural abilities is key to entering an area unnoticed. The first ability you get is “Blink,” which allows you to dash between rooftops of nearby buildings and access areas you cannot reach by jumping alone. “Dark-vision” allows you to momentarily see guards and their line of vision through obstacles, giving you a bit of an idea of what to expect when you are approaching a room. “Possession” allows you to use the bodies of animals and other humans to reach the otherwise unreachable. Also, using your crossbow when loaded with sleep darts allows you to eliminate guards passively and quietly. If you want to kill a guard, without others noticing then using a crossbow dart after unlocking the “Shadow Kill” passive ability will turn the target into ash, thus destroying the evidence.

Even with these abilities at your disposal, you can still be spotted if you make a wrong more and often all of the guards in the vicinity will hunt you and attack you when one if alerted to your presence. If you can’t escape, then your sword, pistol and grenades are your best bet to overcome then, combine with abilities such as “Windblast,” “Bend Time” and “devouring swarm.” The latter being an ability to summon as swarm of rats to attack your enemies and take care of the corpse too.

To upgrade your abilities you also need to collect runes, which are scattered around the city and completing some side missions also rewards you with these. They can be found by holding a human heart which beats when you are pointing towards one and beats faster the closer you get to it. Bone runes, which can be equipped to give you some extra attributes, can also be found this way.

THE BEST OF MARVEL

AvX Consequences #1 (writer: Kieron Gillen; artist: Tom Raney)

We’ve had AvX, AvX Versus and all the standard ongoings with plot arcs relevant to the AvX storyline, and now, just when you thought it was over, we have AvX Consequences. On the surface, it appears nothing much can come of this storyline apart from a finger-wagging moral of “Just say ‘NO’ to ancient omnipotent celestial beings, kids!” but it actually has a lot of intriguing plot hooks: what Hope will do now her destiny’s been fulfilled, the Phoenix Five being put on trial for war crimes, the new mutants suddenly popping up, the future of X-Men/Avenger relations and humanity’s response to the renewed mutant threat. Since most crossover events seem to end with a snap back to the status quo with very little actually changing, it’s nice to get a miniseries that deals with the aftermath- even if they are going to wrap it all up in five issues.

Red She-Hulk #58 (writer: Jeff Parker; artists: Carlo Pagulayan & Wellington Alves)

Red She-Hulk is one of those characters that’s always been on the sidelines for me. She sort of lurks around the edges of the various Avengers titles, and appears as a team player in the completely-average Defenders, but I’ve never really thought much about her beyond “Oh look, Betty Ross got powers. Good on you, Betty!” This issue changed all that. I wasn’t even aware that she had her own solo ongoing, let alone one that’s been going this long, but in just one issue she’s become one of my favourite superheroes. The US military is trying to replicate a combination of the super-soldier serum and gamma radiation to make superheroes that can be guaranteed to follow government orders. Betty objects. The new wave of super soldiers are brought to their knees in humiliating fashion by this badass red chick. Hardcore.

Ultimate Comics: X-Men #18 (writer: Brian Wood; artist: Carlo Barberi)

I haven’t read Ultimate X-Men since the last volume, and I declared myself done with it once I reached the bit where Jean Grey’s telekinesis was all done by little goblins. Obviously, this volume is doing much better, otherwise it wouldn’t be in my top picks list this week. But what’s so great about it? Well for starters, Kitty Pryde is the 17-year-old leader of a mutant rebellion, and that’s basically all you need. But if that’s not enough, how about a rousing speech that makes you proud to be a mutant (even if, you know, you’re not)? Or epic displays of mutant abilities fighting against The Man? Or the Ultimate Universe debut of Armor? Or Quentin Quire making out with Rogue? OK, that last one was a little gross. But that’s just one panel- the rest of it is just made of pure win.

Uncanny Avengers #1 (writer: Rick Remender; artist: John Casaday)

The first issue of the AvX Peace Treaty opens with a page of sheer nightmare fuel, that I fear my flu may turn into hallucinations to torment me with later. The whole thing is pretty much a long tribute to the late, great Professor X, with a short break in the middle to give Cyclops a wedgie and tell him how much he sucks. Cyclops is replaced in the hearts of the hero population by his brother Havok, who is so much better as a person and also more attractive. Rogue and Scarlet Witch have a cat fight. Thor, Captain American and Wolverine round out the team, because it’s not the Avengers without Cap, it’s not a Marvel comic without Wolverine, and Thor is sexy. The team of villains that shows up randomly to unite Rogue and Scarlet Witch are a bit of a D-list ass pull, but the opening villain and the big bad revealed on the final page set a high standard for the rest of the series.

DON’T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON

Fantastic Four #611 (writer: Jonathan Hickman; artist: Ryan Stegman)

This is billed, in big letters on the front cover, as “The World’s Greatest Comic Magazine’s FINAL ISSUE” There are several things wrong with this. Firstly, that is far too many possessive apostrophes for one sentence. Secondly, it’s not the world’s greatest comic magazine. Thirdly, it’s not even the final issue, really; the FF series is still going strong so it’s not like the Four are out of work or anything. Bearing that in mind, this issue is decent enough, but doesn’t pop the way a final issue should- not with a bang, but with a whimper, as the saying goes. You could get it for the future value I suppose, but comic values are basically negligible unless you’re talking Golden Age. So, really, don’t bother.

Agent Coulson is back for Whedon’s S.H.E.I.L.D!

0

When I found out this little piece of news I was sitting in a very posh restaurant. We were there for a Hen Do so had already brought the tone way down with our penis straws. Anyway I made it much worse by exclaiming “YES!” very loudly, becoming the centre of attention in a very quiet room. But I had very good reason, Clark Gregg aka Agent Coulson is to star in the much anticipated S.H.E.I.L.D. Woo! you have one very excited geek gal here.

When he was  ‘killed off’ in Avengers I must say I was a little disappointed, I’d spent a good few years watching this guy with his dead pan attitude and calm and cool exterior tie the Marvel Movie Universe together. Then BAM! he’s dead, with good reason I admit, he brought together the Avengers, but it left me very sad.

Next came the rumours that Coulson would return as Vision, the synthezoid with a heart. Though the whisperings are still flying around the internet, the people who matter have played it down. At the Kapow Comic Convention back in May, Joe Quesada, CCO of Marvel, said “The fans desire for him to become the Vision? I dunno man, it doesn’t feel right,”

The news that Agent Coulson will be not be leaving the Marvel Universe just yet, was announced at New York Comic Con by non other then Joss Whedon and Kevin Feige, the guys heading up S.H.E.I.L.D. It started with a short clip, a tribute to Agent Coulson ending with the line “We remember his Legacy. Always… Rest in Peace, Agent Phil Coulson 1969 – 2012.”

The wonderful Clark Gregg took to the stage at the Marvel Television panel and addressed Head of Marvel Television Jeph Loeb, with a tear in his eye:
“I just want to say because I won’t have another chance to ask this — ‘Have you heard of a Life Model Decoy?'” asked Coulson. “I don’t know if you’ve read the theories from the people on Twitter, but there’s this guy called the Vision. I don’t know if you saw the UK version of the DVD, but the blade wasn’t coming out of his chest. There’s a tesseract!

“All around the globe you can see graffiti, bumper stickers that say ‘Coulson Lives!’ You have the power, Jeph! I feel like we could make this happen right now!”
Cue the geek god himself Joss Whedon on screen met with a round of very excited round of applause. Whedon had this to say:
We all love Clark Gregg, there’s no doubt about that.  From before we made ‘The Avengers,’ we discussed whether there was a way for him to be a part of the Marvel Universe, perhaps a part of a TV show even after his death. … The fact of the matter is, as much as we love him, now that I’m really running Marvel, I like to keep a type of artistic integrity, which means we don’t stretch the bounds of reality
Whedon’s partner in crime, Feige, then appeared behind him wearing a ‘Coulson Lives’ t-shirt adding ” There was never going to be a ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’ show without Agent Phil Coulson!”  With Whedon ended with “He’s headlining the S.H.I.E.L.D. show and always was.”

With that Loeb confirmed that Clark Gregg is the first member cast for S.H.E.I.L.D,  Clark Gregg exited the stage in a hail of applause and whooping confirming for Marvel and Whedon that this was exactly what every fanboy/girl wanted.

With no other details I can only speculate at how they are fitting Coulson in. Is it set pre Avengers? Or was it a Life Model Decoy that ‘died’? Are the Vision rumours true after all? You have my word that I will be watching and waiting and reporting further news about S.H.E.I.L.D as it comes in. Until then Coulson is back!
