Dust and Sand – Chapter 15 – By Sean P. Wallace

Chapter 15

Penelope fought tears the moment she awoke. Her blissful rest was over and another set of hours had begun. That was how she thought now; in hours. Without the sun, with only the same darkness to greet her open eyes that had sheltered them when closed, ‘day’ was just a word.

The hours had been hard on Penelope. By the Lord Almighty they’d been hard. But not because of the darkness. In her last set of hours, the demonic whispers had started when she woke and had hardly stopped until she’d finally fallen asleep. Not that she could really call such a fitful period sleep. It was more like a shortened coma.

And she’d thought her circumstances hard to take before. How naïve she’d been, how foolish. Her mind had expanded into the darkened silence, felt stretched, but it had still been there, still been whole. The cold was a physical pain, something that could be ignored with prayer and willpower. But being penned in by the constant snipes of the demons was so much worse; each word felt like a small nibble at her sanity, like a part of her soul was chewed away.

“Your rescuers have been killed,” they would say.

“No-one wants to pay your ransom.”

“Daddy has left you to die.”

“And you want to give in, you want to take part in the Bacchanal.”

As she ate, as she prayed, even when she relieved herself in that increasingly foul corner of her cell, the demons whispered and chattered and sniped.

Until the Bacchanals began, to use the demon’s terms. They had quietened then. But only because their prattling would have ruined the effect that horrible orgy, that queer revelry of things less than human, had on her. The dark man, that foul creature of Hell who’d set the whispering demons on her, must’ve known how delicate her sensibilities were and so knew she would not be unmoved by these noises.

Penelope was no prude. She knew what men and women did together in the bounds of matrimony; having owned horses, she’d seen how beasts did… that… and the principle as taught in her biology lessons was much the same for humans. When she’d asked about… such activities, her priest had preached that the Lord had given Man these abilities only so that they may procreate, that they were a sacred responsibility for both sexes to bear, one to only be exercised within the sanctity of marriage.

The dark man did not agree; every few hours there had been a chorus of whooping and cheering, words hollered in an unknown language that hailed the start of another Bacchanal. The dull pounding of skin against skin echoed down shortly after and grunts and moans would sing out like trumpets before a king. Horrible amoral pleasures were made centre stage and participated in by all who attended, no matter what they were…

Penelope shook herself to forget these horrible proceedings.

She stood. The cold tore at her once more and her legs nearly buckled as they shivered so she rubbed her shoulders vigorously, tried to get warmth back into her core. To ward off despair, she began a protracted prayer to the Lord; if she were to make it through this trial, to survive and come out in tact, then it would only be through the Lord’s grace.

It took her a few moments to notice she prayed in blessed silence. She finished then cupped her ears but there were no whispers to taunt her. Penelope tried to cage her hope but the feeling rose in her like flood waters. Had her prayers finally been answered in some small way? Was her torture relenting?

The answer came shortly and it was a no; for that day, the Bacchanals started early. This time drums were rolled out into the room above her and strong arms began a slow beat so loud the walls vibrated with each impact. Footsteps fell in time with the pounding, echoing above her in varying degrees of heaviness and… wholesomeness… as the revellers marched in some strange pattern. They gathered together just above Penelope before separating once more; ludicrous as the notion was, it seemed as though they were dancing at a box social.

Penelope moved to the far corner of the room to escape the coming assault. She cradled her head in her hands, forearms shielding her ears as best they could, and started to hum her favourite hymns.

The Bacchanal began in earnest and it was stranger and bigger than any before. All manner of gruesome and sinful sounds leaked through the floor and into Penelope’s twitching, drained mind; moans and biological squishes and dull impacts and less identifiable horrors. The revellers grunted and chittered and quivered above her, all in time with the drums. Incomprehensible voices cried out over the din, clearly intoning something like a prayer.

Penelope did all that she could to not imagine the scene but, perversely even for this setting, it was her Bible that provided the material as its woodcuts of the horrors of Gomorrah came to mind; men and women, men and men, women and women, women and beasts. All manner of unholy unions were being practised. She hummed louder, concentrated on these songs that praised the Lord, and begged to shake these images free.

Play Expo 2012, Get the Geek Pride Lowdown!

“Just push the Pear to start”.

That was one of the more unusual phrases I had said to me at this year’s Play Expo. Sadly, even fruit-based control pads must come to an end; and so ends the end of a fantastic weekend of games, talks, and cosplay at Play Expo in Manchester! Geek Pride attended both days over the weekend, and throughout this week, we will be giving you hands on previews and first impressions of upcoming games in the next 6 months, so keep watching for more info.

As for the above statement, I was trialling a very special version of Pacman at the time, shown by a company called the Video Game Carnival, known for hosting quirky video game events. The process was basically the same, except instead of using a joystick, I used…fruit. Pear to start, and 4 lemons for the d-pad. “It’s pretty straight forward, actually”, the ringmaster said. “The wires running into the fruit pickup subtle changes in the resistances of the fruits when pressed”. Very interesting, I thought, as I hit the wrong lemon and wakka’d my way right into Clyde. To hell with this, I thought, I’m going to play some pinball.

The 40 or so pinball machines, as well as the carnival, was all part of Play Expo’s traditional re.play area; what the expo was founded on. Crammed with classic consoles, from ZX Spectrums and Commodore 64s, and SNES’s and Playstations and everything in between, re.play prides itself on having a huge library of classic 8 and 16 bit games to feed every gamer’s nostalgia, and whatever wasn’t available to play on the show floor, was available to buy from one of the many classic game stores and collector’s stands lining the floor.

This is not all that was to offer, though, Play Expo has had a change of location this year to Manchester’s Event City, to cater for the vastly increased coverage it was offering, and the conference centre was heaving, as thousands of gamers flooded in. It wasn’t surprising, considering this is now being ticketed as the UK’s only expo to cater from gamers of every walk of life; and it certainly did. Apart from the re.play area, the pro.play area was immensely popular as well, as the European Gaming League hosted Pro gaming tournaments for individuals and teams alike, and streamed it live across the world. No matter where I was on the show floor, you could always hear the odd shout of frustration or cheer of victory, and personally, living in Manchester, I felt quite proud that there was such a good turnout for all the tournaments, from rookies to professional and experienced teams, everyone truly got into the spirit of things, and it was great to see geek culture out in force in the UK.

This was shown by the strong showing from the cos.play section as well. Hosted by Hyper Japan, this was an area devoted to everything Japan, and everything cosplay. Traditionally, cosplay has not had that strong of a showing in Britain, but on both days, I saw some extremely well put together costumes, and again, it was exciting to see the amount of people going all out and completely fabricating their costumes from scratch. There was a very impressive Connor from Assassin’s Creed on the first day, and Death from Darksiders 2 on the second day, but many more people that clearly did it just for the fun as well.

Of course, there was the brand new now.play area as well, showcasing many different genres of upcoming games, but two areas in particular, completely stole the show. The Halo 4 multiplayer consoles always had a huge crowd surrounding them, as would be expected, and the queues for Nintendo’s Wii-U area was often up to 2 hours long. While this was obviously great news for Nintendo, plenty of people I talked to said they did not even go to see Nintendo’s new console, as they felt the wait was just too long.

Unfortunately, this was not the only wait that attendees had to put up with. It was the feeling in the press office that the move to Event City might not have been as smooth as the organisers might have hoped. On the first day, the doors opened almost 20 minutes late, and some people faced a wait of up to 2 and a half hours just to get in. There was also due to be talks from developers and industry professionals all weekend long, however, hardly any happened on the first day, and to our trepidation, nothing was confirmed on the second day, either. However, we did manage to attend a very interesting Q & A session with Mike Montgomery, MD and Co founder of legendary UK developers the Bitmap Brothers.

All in all, most of the press, and most attendees that I spoke to myself agree that it was a fantastic weekend, and Play Expo has clearly broadened their horizons and obviously put a lot of effort into their marketing and a lot of thought into what they can offer the consumer. Geek Pride certainly had a fantastic time not just previewing the latest and upcoming games, but we also loved a chance to get nostalgic with some truly legendary consoles and titles, as well as watch pro gaming teams with awe, and of course snap some shots of fantastic cosplay costumes! We highly recommend you come along and join us next year and experience the UK gaming scene for yourself; at a price of £8.80 for a day ticket, there are few better ways to spend less than a tenner for a full day of entertainment. We still have lots of news and info to bring you, and will definitely be attending next year when it comes around again; we hope to see you there!

Borderlands 2 Gets First round of DLC Early; Contains Leaked Mention of Second Batch? UPDATED

0

There’s been a storm of Borderlands 2 related news this past 24 hours. Firstly, those that have been playing recently (and for those who aren’t, what are you doing? Check out the Geek Pride review and buy it now!), may be aware that the first piece of DLC since the game’s release last month went live yesterday, a whole week early, priced at £7.99 on Xbox Live and PSN.

Gaige, the game’s fifth playable character, was released yesterday here in Europe as part of the “Premiere Club”. Also included  is a selection of Gearbox Golden Guns, A Vault Hunter’s Relic that increases chances of finding rare loot, and arguably most importantly for my fellow Vault Hunters, a Golden Key for the Golden Chest in Sanctuary. Gaige herself is a Mechromancer, who has the ability to summon D374-TP, otherwise known as Deathtrap, a combat mech she can control and buff up. A glance at her skill tree shows she seems to be fairly versatile compared with the other characters, with abilities such as ricocheting bullets, and causing an electrical explosion every time she reloads. She also looks to be more advanced to use, depending on the skills chosen. Particularly, Anarchy or Discord look to be useful, yet difficult to master.

The release has not been smooth, however. There have been reports springing up on the Gearbox Forums of players losing their Badass Rank, characters, and in some cases even entire saves. Additionally, it appears Gearbox have accidentally leaked information about the next planned DLC. After a software patch on the PS3, 3 mysterious trophies have appeared, relating to some future DLC, entitled Captain Scarlett and her Pirate’s Booty (oh, grow up). PC Players have since dug around in the game files and come up with some interesting information regarding the DLC;
”Legends speak of Captain Blade’s Lost Treasure of the Sands. Of a prize so great, that men would turn the sands red in pursuit of it. Of a pirate queen, courageous and deadly, who would stop at nothing to find it. Of a monstrous Leviathan. Of the Vault Hunters who journeyed to the desert town of Oasis, not knowing the horrors that would befall them.”
So, it’s been a busy day for Vault Hunters! I’d love to hear your opinions on thes updates. Any of you played as Gaige, yet? What are your opinions so far? Did anyone get anything special in the Golden Chest? And what are your opinions on Scarlett’s Booty?

Hah, booty…

UPDATE; Captain Scarlett and her Pirate’s Booty has now been confirmed by Gearbox, who have now slated the DLC to be released October the 16th worldwide- There will be a whole new 7-zone area, a pirate themed desert, with a town called Oasis being the main landmark, ruled by the one-eyed Pirate Queen Captain Scarlett. In an interview with Associated Press, Gearbox President Randy Pitchford said;
You can sense the pirate theme across the landscape, even though there’s no water. It’s all dried up. It feels more like Tatooine than an ocean. These bandits have really embraced the pirate lifestyle, and there’s the legend of a treasure. That kicks off this whole adventure that the players can go on.”
Aside from the new area, players will receive a new head for each character, as well as a  new vehicle, the Sand Skiff. There will also be a new class of weapons, the Seraph Class, where players will collect crystals and trade them in, similar to Eridium collecting at the moment. This DLC is the first of four that Gearbox has planned; they will be priced at “$9.99 each”, or players can buy a “season pass” for all four, priced at $29.99.

The UK’s only expo to cater for gamers of all backgrounds has gone big this year, with brand new features and areas, and we will be bringing you information and stories straight from the Expo all weekend long.

Developers such as Konami, Namco Bandai and Nintendo will be present, and we will be getting hands-on with the latter’s soon to be released Wii-U system, and previewing some of their release titles such as Zombi-U, Super Mario Bros. and Nintendoland among many others, as well as previewing upcoming games for their recently released 3DS XL. Also at the Expo will be Publishers EA and 2K, and we will be previewing some of their highly anticipated upcoming winter releases, with titles such as Need for Speed Most Wanted, Medal of Honour Warfighter, XCOM Enemy Unknown, and NBA 2K13 all present, among others.

Retro gaming fans will also be catered for, as legendary UK developers Bitmap Brothers will be doing a talk, after recently reforming to release their classic title, Z, on Ios and Android. We will be seeing what they have planned in the near future.

We will also be attending pro.play. Set up and run by specialist esports provider the European Gaming League and streamed  across the world, there will be a multitude of Pro Gaming tournaments with cash prizes, covering the FPS, Fighting and Sports genres. Finally, and last but not least, we will be bringing you shots of the Expo’s cosplay participants, including the cosplay contests that will also be taking place both days.

This is just a highlight of what is in store, watch out for updates, or if you are in the North West then come on down; tickets are on sale at £13.20 for the weekend or £8.80 for the day, and aside from modern industry news, previews and talks, you will be able to appreciate the re.play section, containing free to play coin op classics, arcade cabinets, pinball machines and more.

Stan Lee Media Inc files for damages against Disney claiming copyright infringement

0

Stan Lee Media, Inc. has filed for damages against Disney stating that they have never owned the copyright to many of the Marvel characters we have witnessed on the silver screen. It would seem that SLMI want their billion dollar slice of the pie these franchises have earned for Disney. Interestingly they also want their alleged share of the profit from the Broadway show Spiderman: Turn Off the Dark (2011) and full control of the Stan Lee created characters. The complaint claims:
Spider Man, Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, The X-Men, The Fantastic Four, and most of The Avengers are among the best known comic book characters of all time and all were created by the comic book genius Stan Lee. Motion pictures starring these characters released within the past three (3) years have generated box office receipts in excess of $3 billion. Defendant The Walt Disney Company has represented to the public that it, in fact, owns the copyright to these characters as well as to hundreds of other characters created by Stan Lee. Those representations made to the public by The Walt Disney Company are false. The true facts are that Stan Lee Media, Inc. owns the copyrights to Stan Lee’s creations. Accordingly, Plaintiff Stan Lee Media, Inc. is entitled to the billions of dollars of profits that have been kept by Defendant Disney.
Only time and some heavy duty legal proceedings will tell if they will be successful, however we will endeavour to keep you updated. In the meantime you can read the full legal document here.

The Top 100 DOS Games Ever Made

0

Passing some time on StumbeUpon the other day, I came upon this little gem…an infographic of the 100 most worthwhile DOS games ever. Growing up in the 90’s, looking through this list was incredibly nostalgic for me. I spent a lot of time on many of these games, they taught me things, and helped shape my life and interests; and many of them hold very fond memories for me.

http://information2share.files.wordpress.com/2012/06/list-of-worthwhile-dos-games.jpg

Syndicate, for example, was one of the the first games I ever truly appreciated above the level of simple platformers like Sonic, and The Secret of Monkey Island taught me that games and other media could be appreciated for more than just their base value, and led me to discover the beautiful worlds of Grim Fandango and Day of the Tentacle. Obviously to me, the list is nowhere near perfect. Dungeon Keeper is absent, for example, and that practically introduced me to the fantasy genre.

So, how many of these classics did you enjoy back in the day? Did any of you have similar experiences as mine? And what would you change on the list?
