Haunt: Graphic Novel Review – 7GPP

The story of Haunt goes back to 2006, at a San Diego Comic-con where ‘Todd McFarlane’ (Creator of Spawn) called on ‘Robert Kirkman’ (Creator of ‘The Walking Dead’) who was seated in the audience. Mr Kirkman stood up and expressed that he was a fan, and wanted to know why it was that McFarlane didn’t work on comics anymore. McFarlane’s response was that he didn’t wish to be spread too thin, and that if you create your own Mickey Mouse (in reference to Spawn) that you don’t need to do the Donald Ducks and Goofys. It wasn’t until ‘Brian Haberlin’ (Co-Creator of ‘Witchblade’) informed Todd McFarlane who Kirkman was, that the Spawn creator asked Robert Kirkman if he would like to collaborate. Once this was accepted, the graphic novel crowd held its breath. It wasn’t until a year later that the world first heard about ‘Haunt’, at the same Comic-Con in 2007.

These two veritable behemoths of the graphic novel world teaming up was not only a huge surprise (for those who didn’t know) but a very welcome one. These things do take a long time to create, so it was a large wait for more news.  This time it was February 2009 at the New York Comic-Con, where Kirkman provided an overview of the series: “The main basis of the story is that there are two brothers who have hated each other for a good long time and are now forced to interact because one of them has died and is haunting the other. It’s a big action extravaganza from there on out.”

Haunt 2

I’ll be honest, when I heard the two who were heading it up, I glossed over what it was about. In my view, I didn’t care. It was two big hitters coming up to bat and I wanted in.  I wanted to read it as soon as possible. It came out several months after the New York Comic-Con in October 2009, to distinctly mixed reviews. Some critics believed the two worked well together, that the story was good and the artwork solid. However on the flip side of the coin there were those who felt ‘Ryan Ottley’ was a much better artist than Haunt showed, the characters didn’t have much depth and it took itself too seriously.

Well first let’s come to the story itself.  As Kirkman himself stated, it revolves around two brothers, one of which is called Daniel Kilgore who is working as a priest, defunct of life, and spending his off hours with a prostitute. His brother, Kurt Kilgore works/worked (he doesn’t spend much time alive) for ‘The Agency’ as a secret agent. The only contact these two have had for years is Kurt coming in to confess his sins (the people he’s killed and why) that is until Kurt is murdered. He then  becomes a walking, talking ghost that only Daniel his brother can see (you can start to understand why taking yourself too seriously in this scenario really wouldn’t work too well).  When these two brothers combine to make one force called ‘Haunt’, it reminds me a lot of a Spawn/Spiderman hybrid –  which in and of itself is not a bad thing, but I think because it was these two creating it the expectation was that high that it had to be perfect. (An example of this happened much later than ‘Haunt’ in the fabled ‘Return of the King’ or as more people will know him ‘Duke Nukem’, because that game had been pushed back and back and back some more, until it had to be perfect because there was just so much build-up.)

Haunt 3

I’m not saying ‘Haunt’ is bad, I’m not.  I actually enjoyed reading the first one and I can’t wait to read to the second –  but news just doesn’t look good for the longevity of this graphic novel.  The penciller and inker, ‘Greg Capullo’ (Spawn) is jumping ships, or rather has jumped ship to DC to become the artist on DC’s Batman working alongside ‘Scott Snyder’ (American Vampire/Batman).  Not only this, but Robert Kirkman himself is leaving/has left. Issue #18 will be the co-creators’ last issue together before an all new creative team joins Todd McFarlane.  I hope it will work for him, but without Kirkman, could this just turn into a Spawn parody?

Review – Chivalry: Medieval Warfare – 7GPP

Hear ye, hear ye! I, Matthew of Walklate hereby proclaim this to be my review of Chivalry: Medieval Warfare. Camelot, Spam, etc, etc.

Straight to the Point: A refreshingly unique foray into first person multiplayer hack and slash games; Chivalry is only let down by a lack of content or customization, and a few silly glitches.

Review

Ever played a hack and slash game and wondered how much fun it would be to play online? Well Chivalry: Medieval Warfare turns the whole idea of swords and boards on its head to make a very compelling multiplayer only experience with up to 62 players. And with a name like that, it’s clear that Torn Banner is gunning for the big boys. Get it? Gunning? Doesn’t matter, forget it.

kickstarter_chivalry_medieval_warfare

Interestingly, it’s pulled off very well. The strongest aspect of the game revolves around the community having a strong investment in the game’s theme. Not an easy task for a multiplayer only game, but it’s this sense of camaraderie and rivalry in each match that gives Chivalry an advantage over more generic multiplayer games where the focus is purely on getting as many kills as possible. There’s a huge repertoire of battle cries available at the press of a button, and use of them is encouraged everywhere. Even playing on one particular server (aptly named The Knights of Ni); a member of the opposing team once complained at length because our team weren’t using battle cries enough.

And the good news? Charging up a muddy slope with everyone around you, flailing a sword while screaming like that man in the park that shouts at the pigeons is exactly as much fun as it sounds.

orig_1348419485

I probably spent most of my time in Team Objective (TO) mode, where teams are split into attackers and defenders and given, as you might have guessed, objectives. There are other modes, including Free For All and King of the Hill for the lone wolves out there, however it’s the size and atmosphere of the Team Objective games that allows the game to really excel itself.

An average match involves the attacking team first trying to pillage and burn an outlying village. Doing this allows them to build a battering ram which they must push to the castle gates to break them down while the defending team pours oil and rains arrows down on them. Finally if the attackers breach the castle, one of the defenders is nominated ‘King’ (probably not constitutionally), and the attackers must try and kill him to win the game.

Chivalry-Medieval-Warfare-3

Offensive, defensive, ranged and ‘fast’ classes all have their part to play in these fights, and each class has a small perk. However tactics go out of the window very quickly in most matches, and there are always a couple of players who are only interested in their kill to death ratio. So once you do get into a fight it’s a desperate, bloody fight for survival, with arms, legs and heads rolling everywhere. One on one duels with other opponents, do happen; but usually it’s a lot more chaotic and messy. Friendly fire being enabled only makes this worse, and more than once I waded in trying to help a man in need only to accidentally off him myself.

The weapons allow some flexibility by being numerous and varied, but in reality they are all similar in performance. But that doesn’t mean they aren’t fun, or don’t require skill.Indeed Chivalry’s fighting mechanics actually offer a rare opportunity for quite intricate combat; timing and positioning being crucial. Polearms are best used to stab your opponent at long range, whereas the power of a claymore can make overhead swings devastating.

The main problem became apparent the further I got into the game; there’s an overall lack of variety. Players have just 4 classes to choose from, and although a few new versions of weapons can be unlocked, really this is the only advancement to be had. Even upgradeable skills and armor sets are absent, so if you’re looking for customization  or hammers the size of small bungalows, you may be disappointed.

Even worse there’s only six maps in the game, three team objective ones and three deathmatch/free for all ones (one little more than a rectangular, open field). Even in Team Objective mode, all three have almost exactly the same scenario. Sure they are large maps where battles can last 30 minutes, but come on. It’s a medieval world, surely Torn Banner could have thought up some unique scenarios? The developer has promised patches, but this is a multiplayer only game that’s still going for £20 and to some people, this might not be value for money.

The format of the game also makes some basic things unnecessarily difficult, such as the game often shows server populations to be full when empty and vice versa. Small niggles that don’t majorly affect the gameplay; but really should have been thought about.

chivalry_medieval_warfare_04

Despite buying a library of games for my spanking new PC over Christmas, I keep drifting back to Chivalry, like that big bucket of chicken you just can’t resist no matter how much you want to try the steak. Even though it may not be value for money, Chivalry still brings something different and to an increasingly stagnated genre. It’s clear by its title what Chivalry: Medieval Warfare aims for; but it gives more than any generic shooter could, it gives many memorable scenes, and such a sense of camaraderie that you will never have experienced before in multiplayer games. And for that, I’ll be picking up my Zweihandler and wading back into the fight for a long time yet. See you in the vanguard, brother!

New Handheld Console Announced by…Nvidia??

0

SHOCK! AWE! WONDERMENT! A SLIGHT RISING OF THE EYEBROWS!

All right I admit it, these are some of the feelings I did not go through when none other than Nvidia announced they were taking on the handheld market with their new console on Sunday; dubbed Project Shield. Well, maybe the last one. Because let’s face it, it’s pretty interesting news, even if the internet is already abuzz with discussions on how it ‘looks like a tablet welded to an Xbox controller’ and how it’s generally doomed to failure. Because despite my reservations…I actually think it’s a good idea.

Firstly; the specs. It’s no surprise that, seeing as Nvidia announced it the day before, the console will house the graphics giant’s brand new Tigra 4 chipset. Interestingly, it will also run Android’s Jelly Bean operating system, all with a pretty 5 inch 1280×620 HD multitouch retinal display.

nvidia-project-shield-00-thumb-550xauto-108806

The big claim from Nvidia is that thanks to its Tigra 4 chipset and WiFi, Project Shield will be able to stream games from any PC equipped with Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 650 series graphics processors, including those from the steam store. This means it will be able to play games on any TV in the house, or simply on the couch. Thanks to its Android OS, project Shield will also be able to independently play Android games, which can be downloaded from Google Play and Nvidia’s TigraZone.

The prototype images show a full sized console controller attached to a flip-up screen, as opposed to the current norm of building the controls around the screen itself. If I’m being honest, it doesn’t look great. If I’m being brutally honest; it really does look like an Xbox controller welded to a tablet. But even so, the lack of gimmicks and independent gamepad shows that Nvidia are serious about their device being a gamer’s console foremost.

Honestly, on paper this looks to be pretty exciting technology. Early previews do seem to be saying that the console performs well when streaming from a PC, with no noticeable lag or dip in graphics quality, and with the draw of android for the more casual market, this has something for everyone. However, streaming can only occur on the same WiFi network as project Shield; so unfortunately that means no assassinating the British in Starbuck’s, or pimping your Vauxhall Corsa on the bus.

334514

Even still, this is a good thing. Steam’s recently released Big Picture Mode which allows PC games to be played on home TVs is performing well, and it seems the quest to take PC gaming to the couch is only going to become more pervasive with project Shield. The only other downfall to this is the need for the home PC to have a specific Nvidia graphics card. Not every PC will have one; I certainly don’t, and I wonder how many people will want to pay for a new GPU, as well as pay for the new console as well?

Either way, Nvidia are clearly going for the ‘hardcore handheld’ market. A bold move considering that particular niche’s has a track record about as good as Eddie the Eagle, but they are definitely going the right way about it. The PS Vita and PSP were supposed to be handheld consoles for more hardcore gamers but although they both struggled financially, it was mainly due to lack of quality titles and third party support. With project Shield acting as more of a device that enables you to play existing PC games rather than a completely new platform; Nvidia won’t have the problem of trying to entice developers to develop for it.

If anything; this release shows that Nvidia think they’ve found a market worth exploiting, and they are obviously taking it seriously. But with the likes of Steam’s own Ouya console coming in at the extremely competitive $99 mark, and still no price tag for Project Shield, time will tell whether this announcement will herald the true arrival of on-the-couch PC gaming, or if it will be little more than an expensive gimmick.

Steam Punk – Professor Elemental Interview

profwm

Being an avid Steampunk fan and a Photographer of an alternative geeky disposition I was lucky enough to be invited along as the official photographer for a Cornish Steampunk festival, On seeing Professor Elemental perform for the first time his stage presence, skills and wit intrigued me enough to seek out his stuff after the festival! I was hooked!

We got to chat at the next event we both attended! As well as get some shots with him and the Zombies in attendance………..
It went a little like this!

Hello there Professor, How the devil are you?

Bloody marvelous thanks for asking sir. I have a fresh brew and am full of vim and vigor.

So the Steampunks have spoken and have some musings!

When did an inventor of your caliber realise you had the skills to take on the Chap hop world?

It was about five years ago, when I was a ‘regular’ emcee, I bought the pith helmet on a whim and did a show as a one off joke… then before I knew it, I was immersed in this delightful world of steampunk, whimsy and cake.

How did you go about letting your fellow Steampunks in on your rhyming skills?

I was lucky really, I started getting steampunks getting in touch with me before I knew what it even meant. Then, after my first steampunk convention, I realized had found my tribe.

Did it take a while to get some ‘steam’ behind your act?Grill

Definitely. I like the theory that it takes 10000 hours to get good at something. About ten years at anything and you can excel I reckon- and indeed, it’s taken a good ten years of rhyming and freestyling to get to do it full time.

Does the Prof ever get nervous before a performance?

I get nervous before every performance. If you don’t, you are not doing it right. That’s part of the fun- the adrenaline rush and the risk that it could all go wrong. And of course it sometimes does, which makes the good gigs all the sweeter!

Do you have a favorite or most memorable performance to date?

I have a bundle- but the Steampunk worlds fair, my first American con changed my whole life and in the UK, my shows at the lass o Gowrie have been favourites too. Particularly when there is a mix of friends, steampunks and the hip hop crowd. Those gigs feel like ambitions achieved.

Most Splendid ditty to perform?

‘You remind me of a car’ is always fun, partly because you never quite know how the audience member is going to react to my dubious charms. Plus I wrote it with lots of space between lines, so there are obvious punchlines which makes it (hopefully) easier to get laughs.

Any track with audience participation is fun to do. I want to get to the stage where the audience do all the songs, and I stand and watch. Or have a nice sit down.

There is another Gent on the Chap Hop circuit going by the name of Mr B – The Gentleman Rhymer, he claimed during a ‘Chap off’ you are not a chap at all and mocks you saying you have no shirt, half a beard and a dress up box!

What would you say back to such rot?

Well, there was a time when I would have made threats about battenburg duels or loading up my blunderbuss- but Mr B and I reached an accord during a brandy and opium laced evening. Can a chap so well dressed be as bad as all that?

Is there much chance of a blunderbuss drive by in the chap hop world, or do you play nicely in comparison to gansta rap?

Oh goodness. Much nicer. Although ‘fighting trousers’ was a genuine call to arms, you can’t make your living in a shorts and pith helmet and take yourself too seriously?

How doth one define a chap?

Manners

Are you working on any new inventions?

All the time. At the moment I am partially through production of the first weasel powered generator, which aims to solve the world’s energy crisis. Or the world’s weasel crisis. I forget which

VS

We see you had a recent run in with some Zombie’s what is your chosen apocalypse weapon?

I have always favoured running away and hiding somewhere cosy. It has served me well over the years. Speaking of which, here’s a link to a free song I recorded with my group ‘special school’ regarding the zombie apocalypse. Hope you chaps like it: http://www.mediafire.com/?fjn4zynqwyboxhu

And if during an apocalypse you were given only one choice of tea, and biscuit to take with you what would they be?

Mmm, good question. A nice cup of cosy tea and a custard cream. I like the pattern on a custard cream. Also, cosy tea gave me a massive crate of tea a while back and I now mention them at every opportunity in the hope that they will do it again?

We hear the professor is a comic fan, care to indulge us?

I love comics, just slightly less than I love my own children. Thanks to the mastery of writer and editor Chris Mole and a host of artists from around the world, there is a splendid Professor Elemental comic, that one could pick up from www.professorelemental.com. One can read about it in the SFX review here too: http://www.sfx.co.uk/2012/12/14/blog-professor-elemental-review/

Hurrah!

Queen Elizabeth or Kato?

I don’t know, but I’d love to see them fight.

Is there anything you would like to tell your fans?

Just to say thanks for being so universally lovely. Without good people at my shows, I am just a man in hat shouting at himself.

As far as promoting stuff, I guess if people just pop along to www.professorelemental.com really. All the exciting news about the new album & the web series is on there…. and there’s lots of free music for all!

Whedon’s S.H.I.E.L.D Will be a Sequel!

0

clarkgregg

When I first reported the news that the well loved and mourned Agent Coulson would be starring in Whedon’s much anticipated S.H.I.E.L.D, it was yet to be confirmed if the series would be set before of after the Avengers events in New York City. However, we no longer need to speculate, it has been confirmed as a sequel.

ABC president Paul Lee. Speaking at the Television Critics Association press tour Lee responded to the question of how the series will tie into the Marvel films with this “There is no question that it is part of the Marvel Universe. In fact, the story takes place after the battle for New York.”

Woo! But how they are going to resurrect Agent Coulson played by the wonderful Clark Gregg? I am of course assuming this question will be answered in the pilot, fingers crossed this also includes a little Fury cameo. That tricksy Fury must have pulled a fast one, so he better be around to explain himself.

The pilot has yet has to be officially picked by ABC, but this doesn’t concern me. Given Whedon’s involvement in the entire Marvel universe something would have to go terribly wrong for ABC to not make at least one season. Joss is a legend when is comes to creating characters and stories with the bonus of being back to his roots on a TV show. Whedon talking to MTV confirmed as much:
“You’ve got to bring a bit of spectacle to it. It’s got to be bigger than your average cop show. But at the end of the day, it’s about the peripheral people. It’s about the people on the edges of the grand adventures. The whole point of the show is that even with all these big things, the little things matter. So it’s about people who don’t have super powers. There will be some people with powers, there will be FX, there will be the spectacle of science-fiction storytelling, but all played on a very human, small level. That’s the appeal of the thing.”
Lee also had this to say about the series “It’s the early days. We don’t know if it’s going to be everything we hope it’s going to be. We know the script is great. That’s all we know at this point. And we know Joss is the best!” adding  “I think if we’re lucky enough to have a great series, we’re obviously having fun with that. At this point though, we have a number of characters at the heart of the script who are real characters, who are the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and the first task is to make those guys great and relatable and everything that a great show needs. Beyond that, fingers crossed!”

So to sum up what we know, S.H.I.E.L.D is set after the events in Avengers and Coulson is not as dead as Fury would have us believe. The series will also star Ming-Na Wen, British actors Elizabeth Henstridge and Iain De Caestecker, Brett Dalton and Chloe Bennet as agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

All good indications suggest that it is going to be AWESOME, wouldn’t you agree?

Pokemon Fans Behold!

0

I must admit this is something special. Not since the Doctor Who Christmas special have I been this excited, and that is saying something!

Everyone who is anyone loves a good Pokemon game, and I would like to share with the world the exciting news that the franchise is releasing two new games called “Pokemon X” and “Pokemon Y”; but wait, there’s more! The games are being released on the Nintendo 3DS and will be fully 3D. The first Pokemon games to bring the action into the third and most awesome gaming dimension!

pkmnxymain

If you wish to watch a very exciting video on this the link is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VzO6J981nAw. I must say, the video is pretty awesome; it is like having the coolest lecturer in the world teaching you on the coolest subject on the planet!

We watch as we go through the history of all the games right up until he introduces for the first time the new games being released this year. The video footage is nothing less than exhilarating and my breath left my body as the three new starters were introduced in thrilling 3D battles. These starters are: Chespin (grass), Froakie (water) and Fennekin (fire).

pokestarters

I must admit I am already in love with Fennekin. Adorable isn’t the word. The only downside? We must wait until October this year, but my God, what an exciting month that will be! The games, unlike some before it, will be released across the globe at the same time. Guess I will need to get myself a 3DS then eh? Never had a reason to before but now… I definitely do.

If you wish to find out more visit www.pokemon.com. So remember Pokemon fans; October is the month, X and Y are the names, and 3D is the format of the game!

Art Noveau Style Superheroines by Hanie Mohd

Female superheroes are my…well… heroes. Mostly because I long to be one, but also because I like the fact that my sex is, for the most part, represented well in comics. Let us not argue about the lack of female creators in the industry and how this angers me, this is not the time. Instead let me show you some fan art I stumbled across and loved the look of so much I sought the artist out, only to discover I had already saved one her pieces as inspiration for a dress to wear when my hubbie and I renew our vows, superhero stylee.  An awful lot of fanart represents the fairer sex in an overly erotic light so it is refreshing to see them depicted as beautiful dignified ladies in the style of art noveau.

The artist is Hanie Mohd and she describes herself as an “Artist marooned on the island of Borneo”. Her work can be viewed on DeviantArt, her Blogspot and of course she has a Facebook page.

Writers Challenge: Zombie Apocalypse Survival Team 6, James

“Harry …… HARRY…… HARRY! GODDAMMIT CALLAHAN, WHERE THE FUCK ARE YOU?!“

The one problem with living in the same house as a soldier in his early eighties is the fact that four decades of frequent gunfire lays waste to your ear drums, and then once you add old age, you can see why he should have needed hearing aids. Well, okay, he wasn’t a soldier. Not technically, but that’s beside the point.

“Shut the hell up, punk. You’ll alert the Dead, and if we start getting attacked by zombies, I’ll blow your goddamned head off.” Okay, so he was just as cranky as usual. We’d run out of coffee the day before, and I needed some new books anyway, so it was time for me to do my job.

“I just wanted to let you know that I was heading into town for supplies. We ran out of coffee, and I need some new books. I shouldn’t be more than a few hours.” It was true, because comics were deceptively quick, but to be fair, so are most Clancy novels.

“Make sure to minimize noise. If you’re not back by dark, I’m not coming after you.” Of course he wasn’t.

“Fair enough.” Last thing we’d want is to endanger the fort by leaving it completely unmanned, so I went out to the garage and loaded up the truck. It had everything in it, so I put my vest on and hop in the driver’s seat, putting it in reverse and backing it out of the driveway, turning onto the road into town.

The treeline never changed. Like these towns themselves, TEOTWAKI couldn’t get rid of everything. The places were still there, some of the people, though few in number, were still there. For the most part, it was just me and Harry, but until we see fire and brimstone, we’ll have these fuckin’ trees.

Once I’d gotten inside the suburban sprawl part of La Center, so I had to park the truck and dismount. After putting on my bandanna and shades, I grabbed my sidearm (a customized MAC-10, in case you were wondering) before heading to the bed of the truck to get the bag and the bike. It was just a gym bag that I could use as a backpack, and I siphoned the gas for the dirt bike and the truck from the other vehicles. The truck made one hell of a lot more noise than the bike, especially with the chopper muffler on the dirt bike, so I had to park the truck in an area that I’d already salvaged from. I parked the bike in one block, and once I’d filled the bag I used it to get back to the truck. It’s a simple enough system, but I didn’t have a canopy for the bed, so it’s prone to looting. I hadn’t had any run-ins with golden horde yet, but you can never be too careful.

The beauty of small towns is the illusion of security. A fence is extremely easy to climb, and people with enclosed yards rarely lock the back door. You think that you’d see someone in your front yard, or the dog would start barking, or the alarm would get tripped, but what if none of these apply? Most people never think about stuff like that under normal circumstances, but once shit hits the fan, these are matters of survival. Horde comes through and security doesn’t matter, but they’ll sometimes send scouts. Guys like me, except with a larger and meaner group. Heh, meaner than Dirty Harry Callahan, that’s a laugh. It’d take a horde…

After parking the bike in the next block, I checked the first house. Of course it had a white picket fence, La Center never had a crime rate to speak of, which is partially why I didn’t stay home when shit hit the fan. My home town of Woodland was up to its knees in drug addicts, gangbangers (mostly surreños, courtesy of the I-5 corridor), klansmen, racists and rednecks of varying calibers. The police were always busy, be it gang violence, narcotics possession, crazy parties, or general stupidity. The police force simply didn’t have the manpower required to do its job to the extent that it needed. La Center, on the other hand, was the opposite. There were no gangs to speak of, there were hardly any robberies, and you couldn’t so much as speed without seeing flashing lights in your rearview mirror. Get rid of all these and you’re left with a discreet drug trade, but that’s everywhere. It was far from paradise, but it was more or less secure. Until shit hit the fan, that is.

I hopped the fence, slinging my gun in the process. I pulled it back out when I got to the other side and grabbed my knife from the sheath on my vest, placing the knife in the same hand that grabbed the foregrip, so that I could stab with my left hand as a moment’s notice. After checking the corner around the back of the house, I followed it with the rest of the yard. No zombies, no humans. Pleased with that, I kept my weapons raised and checked the windows and doors for any openings. Of course, just my luck, there weren’t any. I hated it, but I had to make some noise.

I figured that minimalizing noise for stealth doesn’t work the same way that shock & awe might on anyone or anything inside the house. So, I front-kicked the door-jam and aimed my gun, sweeping the room from left to right.

I may not have served in the military or police forces, but I did spend six months at a US Army recruiting station. At the time, the Army was doing something called Future Soldier Training (so you can imagine how hard I laughed when Ghost Recon used that as a title). The point was to prepare us for Basic Combat Training, whether we had signed a contract or not. I was denied three consecutive times over a six month period, but it was a great way to fill up my Thursday afternoons. We learned absolute basic infantry tactics, and they pay off. In this case, breaching and clearing. It’s pretty simple. Once you’ve kicked open the door with a well placed front-kick, you sweep in the direction of the door. Since this one opens from left-to-right, I start on the far left corners of the room, moving to the right, checking them for zombies or humans. Still nothing, thank God.

The way these houses are set up, the kitchen was directly to my left, but I had to clear the entire house before I could raid the kitchen for food or supplies. That being said, the first thing I checked was the pantry. I scored a can of coffee and a bag of Pringles. I set them aside so that I could eat them for lunch, then moved on to the next part of the floor. Laundry rooms are easy, as it’s difficult to hide for very long in a cupboard or the dryer, so that one took almost no time at all. The living room was just as easy, as these places almost never had fireplaces. Far from being environmentally healthy.

The upper floor was more of the same. Bedrooms and bathrooms were a piece of cake, not very many supplies left. Most people took the common knowledge stuff, like painkillers and band-aids, not very many allergy meds. When survivors saw Harry’s flags still flying, they tended to stop by and trade. When the world ended, all system of currency went kaput, so whatever economy still existed was based on theft, scavenging and barter. These allergy medications were worth double their weight in bullets and Top Ramen.

Content with that state of things, I went back to the kitchen. I loaded up the bag first, with every non-perishable good that I can find, starting with the coffee. I look into the Pringles, praying that they hadn’t gone bad. These things had so damned many preservatives in ‘em that they didn’t mold, but they did go stale. I got to thinking, and found some Tabasco. You could refrigerate it or keep it out in the pantry, didn’t matter either way. Again, didn’t go bad. Some Tabasco on each chip, I was in heaven. Once I was finally done with the bag, I tossed it in the trash, zipped up my bag and went outside so that I could take the haul back to the truck. That was when I ran into problems.

Getting up, he points his gun at me and yells “drop it motherfucker!” Naturally, I respond by dropping down to use my bike as cover, which is an extremely bad idea, while I set my gun on the seat, telling him to drop his. I yelled back “You shoot me, half my food comes with me!” I got a look at him. Something struck me as odd.

He was using a ski mask, probably for the same reason as my bandanna, but he was dressed in full black, with a thick wool coat, thick as my military field jacket (dad was career military), but a suppressed M9 seemed a tad unnecessary, yet handy. Minimize noise, minimize the zombie’s attention, plus the commonality of the 9mm. Hell, my MAC uses 9mm’s. Then there was his accent- a surprisingly thick Irish accent. Irish. You don’t hear that very often. Around here, if you heard an accent it was most likely Spanish or Russian.

Dust and Sand – Chapter 27 – By Sean P. Wallace

Chapter 27

Dust’s first response to seeing Shadows Fade was to step back, raise his fists. This had to be a trick, someone wearing an illusion to ripen his hopes for crushing. It was a damn good one too; they were the spitting image of Shadows Fade. Magic like that was costly. But then, successfully torturing the Wanted Man might be considered worth it.

“Dust,” the person wearing the spell said, stepping inside. Her voice was heavily accented. “We have to go.”

He shook his head. “Your masters made a mistake. Shadows Fade didn’t speak English.”

The impostor paused, holding almost perfectly still. “Pardon?”

“I know you’re a trick. Don’t bother me any more.”

They blinked. “No, Dust, it is really me. I did not die; I used my own ‘trick’.”

“Sure,” he replied, stepping further back into his cell.

“We must hurry!” she hissed at him.

Dust cursed himself; part of him believed it. If he didn’t have the Bond on, he could’ve sensed the magic before him and dismissed it right away; he’d always been able to see through illusions. Which was what told him the figure before him wasn’t real; there was no way poor Shadows Fade could’ve tricked him.

“I’m going nowhere,” he said.

The impostor approached him but Dust backed up right to the cell wall, jumping when his back touched the cold surface. They took another step forward and threw Shadows Fade’s arms out in exasperation.

“How can the Wanting Man be so… thick?”

“It’s not thick to learn; a cult of Omnis captured me once, tried to torture me with illusions. Most cults do it. With me wearing this Bond,” he put his hands to his neck, felt the cold iron, “it’s only logical that your masters would try as well.”

The impostor sighed and stepped forward to grab him. “ Then I will drag you.”

Dust dodged out of the way. He didn’t really have anywhere to go in this confined space but he was determined to make this as awkward as possible for the impostor. She came at him again and he rolled away, the Bond digging into his neck.

Their tussle was interrupted when someone shouted from the hallway “Hey, this here door’s open!”

The fake Shadows Fade turned and drew her knives. Three guards, all overweight men, appeared in the corridor and stopped short, their eyes widening when they saw the illusory warrior. That was genuine shock. The impostor ran forward and sliced two of their throats like hogs before they’d even worked out what they were seeing. The third tried to grab her but she dodged, moved in behind him and snapped his neck with a familiar crack.

Instead of letting the dead guard fall to the floor, the impostor threw it at Dust’s feet. “Tell me I am not real.”

Dust gently poked the corpse with his boot. It felt real. He knelt down and felt the warm flesh of the man’s crooked neck, gripped the gun he hadn’t had time to draw; they felt real too. He could even smell the guard’s last meal as it wafted from his open mouth; roast beef with cheap, thick gravy.

Now illusion magic wasn’t one of Dust’s interests; with him being immune to it and all he only knew the basics. But it took a lot of power to replicate sounds, sights, smells and the feel of things at the same time; it would require a supreme magician or major sacrifice. Now, it might’ve made sense to torture him with a vision of someone he’d failed to save but Dust didn’t think he warranted something this complex barely an hour after being captured.

Still, the cult’s leaders might just be willing to sacrifice a few guards in their attempts to get… whatever they wanted from him quickly. He’d have to ask the figure something only Shadows Fade would’ve known.

“If you’re really Shadows Fade,” he said, slowly getting to his feet, “tell me the name of the young girl I killed. The one tainted by Melting Flesh.”

They frowned. “His name was Luke. He had been infested by dark spirits. You released him as a mercy.”

Well, it knew about Luke, which was another mark in the figure’s favour; he knew no-one’d watched that encounter with magic. He examined her closely, tried to find any detail out of place from what he remembered of Shadows Fade. Besides her missing Claw of the Gods, it looked exactly like her, right down to the pissed-off expression.

“I’ll be,” Dust said, finally convinced.

Shadows Fade gave him a small smile. “Took you long enough.”

“And you can speak English.”

“I can,” she said.

“Why didn’t you before?”

<!–nextpage–>

Shadows Fade looked either way along the corridor. “Shall we talk on the move?”

Dust looked down at the corpses slowly bleeding out onto the stone floor. They weren’t subtle; anyone who saw them would have at least a couple of questions. He picked up the obese guard’s Smith & Wesson Sixgun.

“I’ll need to be freed though,” he said, lifting his arms to display his manacles.

She walked over and pulled Dust’s wrists apart. Her muscles strained, veins on her forehead and arms popped out and then a weak link in the chain parted. Dust had his arms again.

He pointed to his neck and Shadows Fade shook her head. “I can’t remove such as that. This way,” Shadows Fade said.

They ran out into the corridor and up, toward the entrance. Except ran was the wrong word; they hardly set a blistering peace. Dust realised Shadows Fade was moving slowly for his sake, which he was grateful for as just this jog was hard work.

“So, English?” he asked.

“You learn a lot about someone from what they say when they don’t know you can understand them,” the warrior said. “Plus, it would make being captured easier. If that ever happened to me.”

Dust noted the subtle criticism but made nothing of it. “What’d you learn about me?”

“That I can trust you.”

Two guards appeared at the top of the hallway, holding hands and looking into each others’ eyes. They never saw Dust raise the guard’s gun and fire a bullet through each of their skulls, spray their blood across the corridor, so they died content. There was no hope of a stealthy approach now as the gunshots had announced their escape.

The kick shook his shoulder, set a dull ache in his bones. At least his aim was still good.

“How did you do your… resurrection?” he asked, running on.

Shadows Fade leapt over the corpses and said “When you are alone against the Badlands, you risk starting a fight you cannot finish. To save myself, the first spell I allowed onto my skin was one that… stores a moment in time. If I die while this point is stored, my body will revert to it within an hour.”

Dust blew air out through his lips; as everyone thought, the Indians had some impressive secrets. “That’s damn amazing.”

She shook her head. “It works only once per year.”

“That’s enough though.”

Her expression hardened. “I hope so. We have a big fight coming up; the cult have begun a spell to convert Penelope Chalmers and we will need to defeat the masked man if we are to save her.”

Dust stopped. “Do you know what I’m wearing here?”

Shadows Fade halted too. She examined her surroundings quickly, always the hunter, then said “It is an Omnis’ Collar. Your people call it a Bond. It blocks magic.”

“If you know that, you know I’m a normal man now; I have none of my powers and I don’t have Resistance to call upon.”

Shadows Fade smiled, an unexpected gesture that suited her. “Dust, you always have Resistance to call upon. You just cannot prove he is listening, like me or any other who believes in him. You will have to take it on faith.”

“I don’t work well with faith.”

“Learn.”

Dust supposed he’d have to; they came here to rescue Penelope Chalmers and, if she was about to be converted, they had to at least try and save her. And Naismith, they’d need to save her too. Even if that meant taking on this whole cult as a mortal.

“Alright,” he said. “I’ll need my other gun first though.”

Shadows Fade nodded. “We’re heading to their magic store.”

They ran on. And on. Dust’s heart began to thrash in his chest, struggling to pump blood around him when it was used to caressing the damned stuff. His throat hurt with each breath and he was taking quite a few of them. He was about to ask to slow down when Shadows Fade put a hand across his chest and slowed to a silent walk.

“We must be ready for this next part,” she whispered.

“What’s the next part?” Dust asked between dragon breaths.

“The guards and lesser cultists of this place are ahead. They have guns and magic. I snuck past them with an invisibility spell before but you will have no such ability. And they will recognise you, wearing that Omnis’ Collar; it was clever to put it on you.”

<!–nextpage–>

“So we fight them?”

A vicious smile spread across her face. “We fight them.”

Dust took some more air, calmed his body, then gave Shadows Fade the thumbs up. She looked at his hand, confused, then twigged what it meant and returned the gesture with a widening of that smile.

They snuck forward. Soon Dust could hear excited chatter mixed with the sound of fucking and at least one chant. The bullets hadn’t aroused any suspicions; Dust supposed gunshots might be common when people worship That Which Sins and frequently commit vicious crimes.

Without thinking, he tried to cart his magical senses ahead of him. There was no response, naturally. Dust swore in his mind, wished he could see further, know more, but then he wished he had everything that he’d thought to be a part of himself.

It was odd, missing what he’d at first thought to be a curse, the very traits that made him a pariah and a fiend and a prisoner of the Solution, but he was so damn used to being the Wanted Man that he didn’t want to give it up. A suspicious man, one who thought highly of Resistance’s planning abilities but lowly of his relative morality, might wonder if there were a lesson in all of this.

Dust’d have to survive the ordeal before learning it.

The corridor did turned sharply, like a bent horseshoe. Shadows Fade stopped just before it backed onto itself, her back against the stone crook. Dust crouched beside her, the sixgun ready. It occurred to him then that he’d have a limited supply of bullets; he checked the barrel and found four shells, the most he could’ve hoped for. Still, he’d need to conserve shots until he could steal another weapon.

Shadows Fade frowned. He held up four fingers, then snapped the black barrel back in and gave her the thumbs up again. She nodded and began touching tattoos at different points of her arms; an eagle on her shoulder, a rune on her wrist, the dagger-like symbol of magic along her right forearm. She was casting her invisibility spell, a complex but ingenious variant which consumed people’s memories of seeing her to sustain it for longer. She pressed the last tattoo, flickered then disappeared.

“I will start the fight,” she whispered. “You help end it.”

Not knowing if she were there or not, Dust nodded. After a few seconds, he scooted across and pressed himself against the wall, the Smith & Wesson in his hands. It felt wrong compared to his Colt or his other gun, like a pretender or the second wife of a widower.

Someone gurgled what would have been a scream if their throat was still whole. Other cries followed, surprise and horror and fury. Dust looked round the corner; Shadows Fade was standing over the corpse of a man with cheap jeans, no shirt and no throat, her blades ready.

The corridor ahead was much like the prison Dust’d been held in, except these doors were meant to let people out. A few barrels of wine and dirty plates cluttered the place, helped it look lived in, and a dozen spluttering lanterns kept it lit. Some of the doors were already open and more were opening as people went to check who’d died.

Shadows Fade charged further up the corridor and gutted a naked woman holding a large sword. Her lover, another woman, tried to tackle the Indian but she grabbed the cultist and threw her to the ground before slicing her throat.

Watching Shadows Fade was a gruesome pleasure, an exercise in efficient combat, but he didn’t let himself get distracted; when a ginger teenager with the grey, toxic matter of a Minor Succubus attached to his neck and a Winchester Yellowboy in his arms stepped out, he shot the bastard dead. The explosion echoed horribly in the confined space and his ears rang like cathedral bells.

Three bullets left. Adrenaline pumped through him, amping up his excitement and making his breath feel hot once more. His poor heart was doing triple-time. With only three bullets, he had to pick his targets. That was the way he’d been taught to shoot, calm over haste, but he felt like a young man again in this fight; he was scared, scared for his life and scared that he’d fail Shadows Fade.

He went down to one bullet when two magic users – probably novices but he couldn’t take that chance – shot out of an open door wielding magic so raw he hadn’t needed his abilities to detect it. Their blood sprayed from the bullet wounds he gave them and the blow-back of unused, unrefined magic finished them off, burning them like crackling over a bonfire. Fortunately, it also killed the Fallen Angel they’d been sharing a room with. Unfortunately, what was left of his hearing disappeared entirely, swallowed by high-pitched tones.

In the meantime, Shadows Fade killed another five cultists. They bled around her, having barely dealt her a scratch. She scanned the corridor, looking for other kills, but it seemed as though they’d killed everyone. But neither she nor Dust were green enough to fall for that one. She called Dust up with a wave and then started searching for stragglers planning an ambush. The warrior winced several times when she looked into the bedrooms, perhaps swore, though he couldn’t tell with the gunshots battering his hearing still.

He slowly approached, the gun and his trigger finger ready. She didn’t find anyone by the time Dust got to the dead ginger teenager and checked his room; it was empty apart from a dull bed plastered with semen.

His eyes were drawn to the movement of the Minor Succubus writhing on the corpse’s neck but it was in its death throes; such things need to extract half a person’s soul before they could build a body for themselves, were parasites until then. He helped it on its way with a pounded heel then swapped the Smith and Wesson for the boy’s rifle. It had five shots in it, which should be enough.

Shadows Fade was looking into a room just ahead of him when a door behind her opened. Dust levelled the Winchester and shot through the wood, both to alert Shadows Fade and stop any attacker. He took a kill shot for an adult, not the kid who charged out, a young girl who wouldn’t even have heard of puberty in a normal family. Vile spells that’d built her as a vehicle of pleasure covered her tiny frame.

The girl sprang at Shadows Fade, small face twisted with rage, and bit into her ankle to disrupt the pattern of her tattoos. The warrior’s skin was tough though, probably another spell at work, and the girl’s teeth couldn’t break them.

Shadows Fade turned and stamped down on the girl’s leg, leaving it at a horrible angle. Dust had to imagine the loathsome crack. The girl howled in pain and bit again, gripping the warrior’s legs firmly. This time, she drew blood.

Dust aimed, fired and killed a second child in as many days. Her corpse fell to the floor and added to the blood they had already shed. It all trickled down the incline and towards him.

<!–nextpage–>

Angry, Shadows Fade kicked the girl’s corpse away and it crumpled sadly against the corridor wall. She knelt, examined her tattoos, then punched the floor. Her lips moved so she must have said something as well.

“I can’t hear you,” Dust replied. But he could just about hear his own voice, which was promising. “I’m gundeaf.”

The warrior frowned at him.

He tried again. “The shots from these guns have ruined my hearing.”

Shadows Fade said something, mostly to herself. She then stood and indicated that they were to run on with a wave of her hand.

Dust gripped the rifle in both hands and followed her. The commotion hadn’t raised any alarms but he supposed that made sense; they’d killed all those cultists too low in station or spirituality to attend the ritual to convert Penelope. Everyone else would be wherever Penelope was now, trying to corrupt her.

That thought made him run a little harder.

The passage eventually met an intersection at what was presumably the top level of the caves. Off to the left was an open area that looked like a kitchen. Shadows Fade moved to the right. She seemed to know exactly where she was going so Dust trusted her, the squealing in his ears fading as they went.

Shadows Fade ran like someone furious with the world, someone trying to catch the sun to stop it setting. He would have said something about his tiredness if not for her angered expression; that vicious girl must have ruined an important tattoo, one that would be awkward to replace or even one vital for the coming fight.

And there would be a fight. It was usually a good bet to expect one but that masked man proved there would be a rumble; he’d been a tough son of a bitch, the kind who’d sold his soul or something more valuable for power, and he wasn’t about to risk his investment by letting The Wanted Man escape.

The masked bastard was most likely a Faustian but he could’ve been an Absent Father or a Willing Possessed. A person like that was a rare beast because it involved giving up a Hell of a lot and you always received less in return… and the masked man had a lot of power. Dust wished he’d had the presence of mind or the strength of body to learn more about the bastard at the time, get some clue as to exactly how much power he had.

Well, he’d find out soon enough.

“Here,” Shadows Fade said, stopping short. It seemed his hearing had returned, though the ringing continued. “I followed your gun when they took it from you and they brought it here.”

She gestured to a sheet of metal covering a wall beside her, something entirely innocuous and ignorable. He would have run right past it if she hadn’t stopped. He frowned and almost asked what she meant when it struck him that there would be magical protection over the store, something to ensure prying eyes went nowhere near it.

“I miss being me,” he wheezed and slumped against the wall.

The warrior frowned then gripped his wrist and dragged him through the metal sheet. He stumbled, eyes and mind rebelling as they passed through what he knew to be a solid object, but he’d been pulled through it before he could panic too much.

On the other side of the spell was a four foot square with three shelves. Old cigar boxes littered the shelves, most with magical symbols drawn into their lids, spells designed to hide the power of whatever they held and complete the illusion that nothing was in here. All but one were open, empty, their contents likely being used in the ritual over Penelope Chalmers.

Shadows Fade stepped past him and ripped the unopened box’s lid off; her strength tattoos weren’t affected by her attacker’s bite then. She tipped it toward him; inside was his other gun.

“Your weapon,” she said.

Dust checked but his Colt was nowhere to be seen. He’d have to visit his other gun’s horrors on the cultists. He tutted, sighed; it tore at the magic in its victims, the only way to guarantee you could kill an eldritch creature but a horrible and painful death for a person.

He picked the other gun up and nearly dropped it. This was the first time he’d felt just how heavy the damn thing really was; even in two hands, holding it was like trying to hold up a rail road The gun and its Word responded to him; the runes glowed dully as though feeling him out, testing the person holding it was really Dust, and then faded when they recognised him.

“We must hurry. Free yourself,” Shadows Fade said.

“How?”

She pointed to her neck. “Shoot the Omnis’ Collar from your neck.”

Dust raised an eyebrow at her. “You know how much of a kick this thing has?”

She nodded.

Dust held the gun up, which was no small feat; he supposed he could rest it in the nook of his shoulder, aim backwards and away from his head and blow the damn collar off. He’d have to hope his strength and powers would kick in the moment the Bond was loose or else there’d be no fight left in him. Maybe even no bones.

He thought back to Shadows Fade’s little speech on faith not twenty minutes ago and decided he was being taught something here, being shown he should appreciate his godly benefactor. And Dust reckoned they might’ve been right to try and teach him so.

“Alright,” he said.

It wasn’t easy to arrange his other gun properly with his drained arms and the sheer weight of the thing but he managed it after a few false starts. The hammer dug into the end of his shoulder and the barrel pressed against his neck. If this didn’t work, he might get a barbecued neck too…

Holding the other gun loosely with shaking hands, he moved his finger to the trigger and took a deep breath, braced himself, fired.

The shot was loud as the scream of a god in that small space. Even the cigar boxes shook. Shadows Fade had already covered her ears but it’d been impossible for Dust to do so; he heard two pops and then nothing, not even a ringing. He was deaf now. The other gun’s kick then pushed him to the far corner of this cupboard, a great arm on his shoulder which brought raging agony the moment it touched him. He screamed, a sound he would never hear, and smacked into the floor and wall.

Shadows Fade appeared above him then, a towering and sympathetic figure. She reached down as if to comfort him but he felt no touch. She was mocking him. He waved her arm away and roared his agony and frustration.

There was a clank, he heard a clank, in response.

Dust turned over and saw the Omnis Collar, the Bond, whatever it was, roll away. Shadows Fade had freed him of it. Strength and surety entered his body, sweeping away his fatigue. He was the Wanted Man again. Looking down at his shoulder, he saw that it was whole and the pain disappeared; either he’d only felt the pain because he’d expected it or it’d been Resistance’s price for the magic to heal him.

Shadows Fade offered him her hand and he took it, let her bring him to his feet.

“That wasn’t dignified,” he said. Shock drained from his system as the magic of his tattoo, which rested just announce his tail bone, went to work. He tested his arm and shoulder and found them healthy.

“It worked,” she said with a shrug. “Besides, you are the Wanting Man, not the Dignified one.”

He smiled. “True. Now, let’s save Penelope Chalmers. And Naismith,” he added.

Shadows Fade’s eyes narrowed at the mention of his partner but she said nothing, merely gestured for him to lead the way. Which he did, charging forward with a purpose and the rage to see it through.
