Django Unchained -10 GPP

Perhaps it’s wrong to say Django is a Tarantino hit, since he hardly has misses, but Django Unchained has become by far my most favourite of his films. I know people who claim Inglorious Basterds is his best work ever, but not in my eyes and definitely not in my opinion. Django Unchained has quite a cast, I was surprised to see Leonardo DiCaprio and Samuel L. Jackson on the credits, since I went to the theatre knowing next to nothing about the film. I left feeling suddenly empowered and proud to have seen it as though somehow my presence there had changed the world. Perhaps it simply changed my own views of the world and I think it’s what Tarantino wanted in the first place.

But what is Django Unchained about? For those of you who like me kept away from trailers and reviews before going in to see it, it’s the tale of a young slave, named Django who becomes important in a world where his life’s worth was measure in dollars and a single event that seemed to matter very little has rippling effects that changes the world view of several people.  As most Tarantino movies, violence is not spared, it starts with violence and it ends in violence, but it’ always justified and not done to with the single purpose of being gory. We see a facet of the old United States that most movie makers choose to hide or pain in a more favourable light, but nothing her is sugar coated. You see slavery as it was, a constant struggle for survival, a way of life that teaches people not to live, but to simply make it from one day to the next.

Django is played by Jamie Foxx, who I had not expected to truly “rock it” like he has. He makes you believe in his character, in everything he says or does, bringing to life a man many had wished they could be, a man that fights for honour and freedom, even if he sometimes chooses less honourable paths to achieve them. He’s joined by Cristoph Waltz (best known to Tarantino fans as Col. Hans Landa) who portrays a German bounty hunter, hell bent on bringing justice to a broken world. His motivations are slightly more complex than that, but you’ll have to discover that on your own. Still, he plays the role of a man that loathes slavery and does random acts of kindness simply to right the wrongs of the world majestically. Jamie Foxx might be the star, but Christoph Waltz is a scene stealer, making this movie his own for the better part of it. He and Django are brought together by coincidence, but they stay together due to an unbreakable friendship that for once, in a movie is shown developing rather than simply being thrown at the viewers with the expectation of them to believe it. It’s why the movie is so long, almost 165 minutes, but worth every single one of them.

DiCaprio, who plays a villain this time is joined by Samuel L. Jackson who is hard to recognize in his role as  Stephen, a house slave that’s more than meets the eye, both of them bringing their talent to the table and helping create the image of a world in desperate need of change.  The less developed in this movies are the villains, almost a caricature of what they could or should be, but that goes with the flow of the movie and with the fact the tendency to focus on the heroes, on the ones that do something good rather than wasting time trying to understand the villains who are nothing but cannon fodder more often than not. They are still useful at portraying the world of misery and pain that Django was born into and the world he was trying to survive into.

On my list of favourite things about this movie I have to list the soundtrack which is fantastic going from songs that match the period to hip-hop songs that accompany the scenes brilliantly. Adding every single element that makes Django Unchained together you get a fantastic film that’s worth every praise it got. This movie is a 10 and that’s only because I can’t give it 11, go watch it and you won’t regret it. However, if you’re squeamish, you might want to stay at home and watch something else, it can get a little bloody at times.

Videogame Buyers Guide 2013 – Part 1

In this series of 4 we will be taking a look into our crystal ball and seeing what us lucky gamers can expect in 2013. Last year we had a banquet of sequels, AAA titles and indie games, and it’s looking like we have plenty to whet our appetites for 2013 so far.

For now we will be taking you through Q 1 which lasts from Jan to March, and as you will see; it’s all about the big bucks. With rumours growing around possible announcements of new consoles later on in the year, plenty of AAA titles will be arriving to shimmer and dazzle you over the next few months, whereas the second half of the year looks unsurprisingly quiet. Let’s take a look at some of the most important releases;

Jan 15th

DMC; Devil May Cry (X360, PS3) (Pc Release 25th Jan)

DmC-castle

This reboot to the long and well established franchise got off to a very rocky start. There were worries that new developers Ninja Theory has turned Dante into an emotional adolescent teenager, but ever since we got a chance to test it for ourselves, this is one we’ve been looking forward to for quite a while. After getting hands on we found him to be the same old smooth, cocky Dante we know and love. And with the fluid, acrobatic combat and towering bosses all back and bigger (literally) than ever, this reboot has got many people’s curiosity.

Jan 25th

Ni No Kuni; Wrath of the White Witch (PS3)

Ni no kunai

Hugely anticipated and all round excellent JRPG Ni No Kuni has been out in Japan since 2011 and has received critical acclaim from almost everywhere. Now it’s finally getting a western release. Co-developed by Studio Ghibli, who claim such strings to their (pretty large) bow as Howl’s Moving Castle and Spirited Away, many JRPG fans will be salivating at the chance to get hold of this intuitive game from the White Knight Chronicles developer.

Feb 8th

Dead Space 3 (PS3, X360 PC)

dead space 3

The third and probably final installment in Visceral Game’s survival horror franchise is looking interesting, to say the least. While players carry on the story of Iisac Clarke, that masked man of mystery, there is now a drop-in-drop-out co-op mode similar to Resident Evil 5 as part of the main story. While this will surely make it more accesible for many people, it has also caused some controversy as many poeple believe EA may have compromised the “horror” element of the game in favor of more action and set-pieces.

Feb 22nd

Crysis 3 (PS3, X360, PC)

Crysis-3

Accidentally announced back in August where it surfaced on the EA Store, this next chapter in the sandbox shooter’s story follows Alcatraz as he heads to the drastically altered New York, styled as an “urban rainforest”. New this year is a “strategic multiplayer” option called Hunter, where two cloaked hunters try to off as many troopers as they can, with each trooper killed added to the hunter’s team. It is apparently being developed on the CryEngine 3 again, so you can expect some truly stunning visuals. If your PC can cope.

Feb 22nd

Metal Gear Rising; Revengeance (PS3, X360)

metal-gear-rising-revengeance

Arguments about whether “Revengence” is a real word or not aside; here’s another release that many people will either love or hate. A pretty drastic departure form previous titles, Revengence is being described as Lightning Bolt Action rather than Tactical Stealth Espionage. And although during my preview with it I enjoyed the looks, arcade-y hack and slash style and the fast paced action, many people will also feel that the arcade style means it’s not a “true” Metal Gear Solid game. Definnitely one to keep an eye on.

March 8

SimCity (PC)

SimCity

Sixth game in the immensely successful franchise from Maxis; fans have lots to look forward to in this most recent edition. SimCity will run off Maxis’ brand new GlassBox engine, which will allow for much more detailed buildings as well as smarter animations and most importantly, curved roads. CURVED ROADS! But if that doesn’t sate your mayoral lust for power, there will also be full online multiplayer, which will allow one region to host different cities at once. And with many little tweaks such as limited resources and specialized cities, this should make for some interesting competitive play.

March 5th

Tomb Raider (PS3, X360, PC)

Screenshot from Tomb Raider (2013)

Another reboot; Tomb Raider will take Lara Croft back to her roots as a younger girl, and follows her  journey from prim and proper, to a terrified girl alone in the wilderness, to a survivalist and the strong independent woman we know her as. And we already know from that scene that Crystal Dyamics aren’t pulling any punches. This metamorphosis looks to be portrayed very seriously and very darkly. But whether you agree with the controversy surrounding this game or not; it looks like it could be a quality title. The game is open world, and with plenty of side quests and multiplayer features to supplement the 10-15 hour story, this could be the game that takes Lara back into the mainstream.

March 15th

God Of War: Ascension (PS3)

GodofWarAscension_

Yet another AAA prequel being released the beginning of this year; Ascension will focus on another chapter of Kratos’ life, telling the tale of his attempts to break free of his chains (so to speak) of servitude to Ares. Todd Papy, Game Director at Santa Monica has promised we will have “a look at Kratos’ human side so fans can relate to him better and understand some of the stuff he went through when he was younger.” Whether it was a good call bringing a softer side to arguably the angriest man in the history of videogames is something we shall just have to wait and see. Another first for multiplayer as well; Ascension will feature team battles with up to 8 players in a mode dubbed “Favour Of The Gods”, among others, a small story driven game where players use various forms of defence and attack to complete objectives and score ‘favour’, leading to dramatic conclusions.

March 2013

Gears of War: Judgement (X360)

gears-of-war-judgment

Is anyone beginning to see a pattern here? Yet another prequel, Gears of War: Judgement will be the first title to not feature hardened criminal/hulking space marine Marcus Phenix. Instead, it will take the story right back to Emergence Day itself, and follow Kilo Squad as they get caught up in the chaos of the locust horde, and get accused of treason by their comrades. Many people, just like previous years, are talking about the game’s multiplayer modes, specifically a new mode titled Overrun. Focusing heavily on class based teamwork and accomplishing a series of ever more challenging objectives, one team will play as COG and the other, Locust. Initial previews seem impressive; and it looks to be a real contender for other more traditional horde modes.

March 26th

BioShock Infinite (X360)

Bioshock-Infinite

And finally in Q1 we have BioShock Infinite. Taking us back to the 1900’s, instead of shady underwater cities and experiments, the floating city of Columbia was sanctioned by the government, until it reveals itself to be a huge weapons platform. Players take the role of  “Booker DeWitt”, and once again must side with one of the two factions vying for control, and make choices that impact the rest of the story. Infinite will once again feature a mixture of gunplay and unique powers, albeit ones that cannot be changed this time. However possibly the best looking new addition is the use of grappling hooks to navigate the “Skyline”, a vast network of rollercoaster like structures that Booker must use to get from place to place.

Coward: A New Online Short Film Set During WWI

0

Coward

There’s a new online short film, set during WWI, titled “Coward,” which highlights how some soldiers were affected and treated during the conflict ( it certainly can’t be accused of glamorising war). The previous work of the cast and crew involved includes quite a few critically acclaimed films. It’s well worth a watch and can be viewed here:

“COWARD” from Stephen Murphy on Vimeo.

Here is some information taken from the press release:

Coward is a 28 Min film set during World War 1 that brings to light some of the brutal treatment soldiers received for suffering what would now be known as shell-shock.

It follows two cousins, Andrew and James, from their home in Northern Ireland who join the British Army to fight for their Country and make their families proud.

Through their eyes we see the reality of life on the front lines.

The Director:

David Roddham is a vibrant new Director who trained as an SFX technician working on some of the biggest FX movies in recent history  (Snow White and the Huntsman, Cold Mountain, Black Hawk Down). His previous short film “Fifth Street” won numerous awards on the festival circuit in the USA and Europe. He is represented in the UK by Anthony Mestriner at Casarotto Ramsey & Associates Ltd.

The Producers:

Coward was produced by David Roddham, Dave Komaroni, oliver Ager and Neil Corbould, who between them have a wealth of experience in the film industry. Neil Corbould is also an Academy award winning SFX Supervisor whose credits include World War Z, War Horse and Saving private Ryan. Together with Nick Moran as an Associate Producer this is their first venture under the banner of Different.

Coward_Cast

The Cast:

Coward’s ensemble cast includes Martin MacCann (The Pacific, Titanic: Blood and Steel), Nick Moran (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows; Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels), Charlie Clements (Eastenders, Crime Stories), Sean Stewart (Dorothy Mills, swansong), Joe Van Mayland (The Tudors, Jane Eyre), Cillian Roche (Trapped, The Looking Glass) and Charlotte Bradley (Titanic: Blood and Steel, Veronica Guerin).

The Shoot:

Coward was influenced by classical cinema harkening back to the era of David Lean where everything was captured in camera rather than created in post production.

Spearheading this challenge was award-winning Cinematographer Stephen Murphy who photographed Coward on 35mm film using older Panavision Anamorphic lenses and manipulating Fuji stock to achieve a painterly colour pallette.

Other key crew included Editor Mark Talbot Butler, FX Supervisor Steve Warner and Production Designers Ty Senior and Emily Durtnall who were responsible for the film’s stunning centre piece: the 250 ft trench built specifically for the production.

Zombie Survival Team 8 – Cristina Bogdan

apocalypse

“The world is shit.” I turned my head in the direction of the voice and I rolled my eyes, it figures it was going to be Harper that stated the obvious. I gave him a pointed look resisting the urge to flip him off, mostly because there was a kid in the room and really, there were a few things I still clung to. “It might be, but you’re not exactly a fragrant bouquet of roses, love,” I told him with the sweetest smile I could muster while fighting back the urge to strangle him. “Shouldn’t you be down in the lab trying to create a machine out of random pieces of string and glue?” Perhaps I was a little mean, but let’s face it, the world had more or less turned into a steaming pile of crap two days before Christmas and while six months had long since passed, none of us had quite recovered from the event. Seeing people turning into savage flesh eating automatons tended to remove tenderness from our already withered souls. “Harper said shit.”

I threw the young engineer a look and flicked the girl’s nose. She had somehow managed to survive so far in a world where she was the best hors d’oeuvre and we still had no clue how she managed that. It was almost eerie to look at her and I wondered if zombies could feel fear and it was what was keeping them away from her. Incidentally it kept them away from us as well, so she was a keeper. “Yeah, I know she did, honey. We’ll ban him from eating chocolate today, I think you can benefit from his supply.” I took her to the other room and pushed her towards the man we’d all least expected to connect with the child, but he treated her like she pooped M&Ms. For all we knew, she just might have. “She’s all yours I told John,” before dropping in a chair and fidgeting until I got into a comfortable position. “We’ve got a problem…those dumb bastards are all but knocking on our doors, we can’t hold them back for much longer and Mr. Brains over there hasn’t been able to create a good deterrent. We’ll have to do this the old fashioned way. And…” I said turning towards the little sprite of a girl that had joined us only a month before, “we don’t set them on fire again. The only thing worse than a zombie is a zombie on fire, got it Trance?” She nodded in understanding, though I was certain my words had gone in through one ear and out through the other. I sighed and called out to the kid. “Hey, Hotaru, you’re coming with, right?” It was a cheap shot to ask the ten year old to join us, but really we were getting desperate and the dead gave her a wide berth, she was more helpful there with us than anywhere else. At her nod I smiled, eager to get out of the small compound we’d been holed up in for weeks.

A couple of months back, we followed, stupidly if I might add, a few radio transmissions that took us across Europe, hoping that life was going to be better there, that we might have actually stood a chance against the dead. Turns out some people are really that mean, luring idiots like us and using them as bait for the dead so they could live a day longer. Our group had had twelve people when we came here, now it was just me, Harper, John, Jennifer and Hotaru. I wasn’t sure if it was because we were the best adjusted to survive or if it was sheer, blind luck, but the fact that we had an engineer, a doctor and a kick ass killing machine set my mind at ease. Not to mention our very own zombie repellent. Then there was me. Not sure what in my background as a teacher got them to name me leader of our little band of misfits, maybe they’d all had some odd crush on their second grade teacher, but it didn’t matter, not in a world where recognition tended to mean you were the one to die first. I tossed everyone their weapons and sighed. “Remember that small town we saw two miles from here? That’s our first stop. Take everything that might be of use, but don’t take too much, we want to be able to run. Oh, did I mention we’re going on foot?” I said giving them my best shit eating grin, before opening the door and taking off. “Hakuna matata, bitches!”

Dust and Sand – Chapter 28 by Sean P. Wallace

Chapter 28

Shadows Fade followed Dust, the Wanting Man, the herald of the only god who didn’t want to kill her people, out the small storage room and through the dark temple. With Omnis’ Collar removed he ran more freely and she no longer had to check her speed at every turn.
Just most of them…

Shadows Fade had expected more from him. She got the feeling that most people did. He was strong, sure, had impressive recovery abilities and a mind for fighting but he’d barely survived fighting a few dozen dark spirits. Even she and Godly Claw would have fared better. Someone infused with Resistance’s favour should be capable of more.
But then, the difficulty may have come in who was supporting him. Or not, as it happened. It was very possible Dust had formed a plan that relied on Eleanor Naismith and been caught by surprise when she froze. For now, the warrior would believe that had been the case.

So he was slower than he should be, more damaged and gnarled. At least he showed no fear. That she liked. And he was now leading her through the temple, taking them straight to the acrid scent of the ritual, so his extra senses had returned. Most importantly, he would not be a drag in the coming fight and would not hesitate as he had when that Soulless had attacked them.
Shadows Fade snarled to herself, quiet enough that Dust would not hear; she was furious at letting something like that surprise her. She’d been too cocky after capturing that bandit alive, hadn’t paid attention to her surroundings. If she had, she might have felt his presence, masked though it was by artefacts; she certainly wouldn’t have let it wrap its cold, pale arms around her, or had to fake her death.

Soullesses were rare though; most people, white or otherwise, were too squeamish to give themselves over to the Old Gods and turned to magic for power instead. That Soulless had used artefacts to supplement his abilities but was still powerful. In fact, its willingness to use artefacts showed a self-awareness and lack of arrogance that made it very dangerous.
It must be the one pulling the strings in this cult, the real power behind it. That was how these collectives organised themselves, keeping their most powerful members hidden to avoid opportunistic ire from every other dark spirit. It would usually take something extraordinary to pull something like that from its hole.
Something like the Wanting Man.

Shadows Fade realised a flaw in her logic about the Wanting Man; she hadn’t given herself to Resistance, had been too ‘ squeamish’… but The Wanting Man had, albeit in a different way to the Soulless. Perhaps, she thought, she should praise him for that bravery. He was not called The Wanting Man for nothing.
They were soon at the kitchen area, a series of tables and pits that stank of human flesh. Shadows Fade looked up and whistled, knowing that it was unlikely anyone would hear, and Godly Claw appeared over a pothole in the ceiling as expected. It was the first time they’d seen each other since their ‘death’; Godly Claw always took a while to reappear after the spell and usually it was some distance away, as though the winds of magic had blown her like a fallen leaf. She knew Shadows Fade well enough to come to the temple and the warrior knew her Spirit Wolf would be drawn by the magic escaping those vents.

“Claw of the Gods is alive,” Dust said. He seemed glad of this.

“Godly Claw,” she said. It was annoying that Eleanor Naismith had garbled her Spirit Wolf’s name so much but only to be expected from an amateur.
He frowned, then nodded. “Godly Claw.”

The Spirit Wolf barked then jumped down into Shadows Fade’s arms. Being mostly willpower, she weighed little and was easily caught.

When they touched again, reconnected, Shadows Fade closed her eyes and took in a hitched breath; the biggest drawback of faking her death was the sharp disconnection between her and Godly Claw, an emotional ache that hurt more than a real death could. The Spirit Wolf felt it too so they remained entangled in each other.

In the embrace, Godly Claw told her that many dark spirits had stirred following Dust’s fight in Crucifix. She did not know if they had retreated at seeing Dust captured as she had concentrated on hiding from them. Shadows Fade hoped they had slunk back to their holes for Father Kilkenny’s sake. The Spirit Wolf also gave her a rough layout of the temple, showing that they were maybe half a mile from the entrance in the valley. That information, and the knowledge of some of the other potential exits, might come in useful later. But what mattered most was that she was here, with her.
“We’re close,” Dust said after a polite length of time.

The GLAAD Media Awards: Comics Nominations

0

The GLAAD Media Awards have been going on for 24 years, and honour comics, TV shows, films, musicals, plays, books, short stories, basically every aspect of media, for their positive and well-written portrayal of LGBT characters.  Obviously I’ll be focusing on the comic nominees, because duh, but if you’re interested you can check out the full list here.

Over the years, I’ve been consuming a vast amount of all different types of media (translation: I’m lazy) and comics have always seemed to have the best portrayals of LGBT people and couples.  It could be because it is cheaper to produce a comic series than, say, a film, where you still can’t have a black leading man unless it’s Will Smith.  It could be the number of titles- if people don’t buy Batwoman because the title character is a lesbian, DC still has 51 other series they can sell; and if Northstar’s coming out back in 1992 didn’t gel with the fans, it’d be easy to slip him back into the background cast until the decision could be retconned away.

Or it could just be a liberal conspiracy designed to corrupt our children and lead them down the path to devil worship and free healthcare.  Whatever the reason, the number of gay characters in comics makes me happy and proud that the comics I love so much are showing support for same-sex relationships.

With that, then, I offer a little commentary on this year’s nominees…

axm

Astonishing X-Men (Marjorie Liu; Marvel)

2012 was the year in which Marvel’s first major gay character, Northstar, married his longtime boyfriend Kyle.  For some, seeing the openly gay Northstar taking his boyfriend for romantic flights over the city and getting a candlelit dinner ready at superspeed was tolerable, but the idea of them having some sort of ceremony to celebrate their relationship in front of friends and family was just too much.  Many X-Men fans threatened to boycott not just Astonishing X-Men, but the entire Marvel lineup, which would be shocking if it weren’t so completely hilarious: fans of a comic with a 50-year message about accepting people who are different, declaring that gays have no place in the X-Men.  Yeah, flawless logic there.

b

Batwoman (W. Haden Blackman & J.H. Williams III; DC)

Batwoman was created in 1956 as a love interest for Batman, in an attempt to squash the rumors that some funny business was going on between the Dark Knight and the Boy Wonder.  And by “funny”, I mean “anal”.  The character was so completely abysmal that she was retconned out of existence (the worst possible fate for any comic character) and was re-introduced 50 years later as a lesbian from a wealthy family who became a vigilante after being expelled from the military under “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”.  I’m not sure if that’s irony, or just plain funny.  Either way, Batwoman is a rare example of a gay character not only having their own ongoing series, but having that series read by mainstream comic fans, and not just those wanting an LGBT-themed series.

btvssnww

Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season Nine (Andrew Chambliss, Scott Allie, Jane Espenson & Drew Z. Greenberg; Dark Horse)

I haven’t read this series, but given the TV show it’s based on, its nomination is hardly a surprise.  Willow is a smart, brave, funny lady who just so happens to be a lesbian, which as far I’m concerned is the best way to write any character- person first, sexuality second.  Despite her long-term relationship with Tara coming to an abrupt end with Tara’s death (a fact which is cited by as “proof” that Joss Whedon is a secret homophobe) she is nonetheless an inspirational character.  The Willow: Wonderland miniseries that accompanies the main Buffy story involves Willow teaming up with a former lover, and going to another dimension to bring magic back to the world, which is just insanely badass.  This series should also get points for Buffy getting an abortion. It’s not an LGBT issue, but it’s a damn ballsy move, Whedon.

e2

Earth 2 (James Robinson; DC)

Earth 2 did for DC what Astonishing X-Men did for Marvel; by which I mean “reduced certain fans to a spitting, foaming rage”. Fun fact: I was at the New 52 panel at Kapow! when Dan DiDio announced they were making a previously-established heterosexual character switch teams.  I remember it fondly; there was a very British murmur of approval from the audience, and I promptly bet my husband folding money that it would be Black Canary (seriously, pick up Birds of Prey and tell me there’s nothing between her and Starling).  Instead, it was Alan Scott, the first Green Lantern.

Alan Scott had a completely different origin, costume, weakness and power level to the other Green Lanterns, and in the years leading up to DC’s New 52 reboot, was seen less and less in the JSA series, in favour of newer, shinier heroes like Power Girl and Mr. Terrific.  So DC did the kindest thing they could, and made Alan Scott the Green Lantern of Earth 2, and figured whilst they were making changes, they’d also make him gay, because why not?  This was a really bold move on DC’s part, as not only were the anti-gay squad attacking in full force, but they’d formed an unholy alliance with the anti-change crew.  DC was all out of fucks to give, and Earth 2 went on to be a brilliant series, serving as a sort of cosy retirement home for Golden Age heroes.

kk

Kevin Keller (Dan Parent; Archie Comics)

I’d always pretty much ignored Archie Comics as just nostalgic holdovers from a simpler time, a time when people really did say “Gee willikers!” as a genuine exclamation of surprise.  I’d assumed it was an American counterpart to Dandy and Beano.  I knew that it was a big deal in my parents’ generation, but I figured that was just because they couldn’t get Amazing Spider-Man or Justice League, and thus didn’t know what good comics were.  It seems I was wrong.

Kevin Keller was the first gay character in Archie Comics (though he appeared in 2010- far too late to cause any major controversy) and in January 2012, married his fiance Clay, beating Astonishing X-Men to the first gay marriage in mainstream comics by a full five months.  It also covered the controversial topic of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” being repealed, as Kevin and Clay met whilst both were serving in the armed forces.  D’aww!  Naturally there was outcry over this as well, mostly sung to the the tune of “Think of the children!”  Because as we all know, children will imitate anything and everything they see in a comic: beating up criminals, making poor costume choices, etc.

So those are the nominations.  The results won’t be announced until May, but I gotta say I’m rooting for Earth 2,  although I suspect Kevin Keller will take home the prize.  One thing that baffles me though- why wasn’t Martin Eden’s Spandex nominated?  Was it not gay enough?

Zombie Killing Dream Team – Videogame Edition

Welcome to the next offering for the Zombie Killing dream team, this time, it’s all about the Videogame Characters. But remember, all must be based in real life, apart from my superhero wild card! Here’s a quick recap of the rules;

  1. Team of 4 fictional characters plus you.
  2. One superhero type allowed but if you choose Superman or someone similar you’re cheating.
  3. You must designate a leader.
  4. All  other characters must be assigned a role of your choice e.g. tank, chef, herbalist
  5. No characters from the zombie apocalypse genre.
  6. Bonus points for including for including a dilemma e.g. character sacrifice
  7. You may present your team in the format of your choice.
  8. You may choose a base of operations within a reasonable distance of your home.
  9. Writers who are experts in a particular media must create their team from that media.

So without any further ado, on to my first choice;

Leader – Commander Shepard – Mass Effect Trilogy

mass_effect21

Any rookie knows that in the zombie apocalypse, very little time is actually taken up by fighting. So my leader needs to be more than just a soldier.  They need to be able to pick their battles. They should be more about the team than the fighting; charismatic, assertive, and able to hold the team together under immense psychological stress or adverse conditions, all with a huge lack of resources or support. There’s only one sensible choice. It’s Commander Shepherd.

To start with, he is extremely qualified. A Commander in the highest tier of the most highly respected Special Forces group in human colonized space; Shepherd is also the first and only member of the galactic secret service; SPECTER, so it’s safe to say, he knows what he’s doing. In addition to this; Shepherd has been in three different life-threatening situations, and has had to build his own team and work together with people he might not necessarily like, so we know that he is good at encouraging teamwork, and uniting people of all different backgrounds to one cause. He is both a paragon of justice and a dastardly rogue, and he knows when to give a soft touch, or a hard punch, all to get the results he needs. Shephard is the best long-term choice, perfect for leading his team through the apocalypse and surviving.

Contenders – Really? Come on, now.

Scout – Lieutenant Commander Sam Fisher – Splinter Cell

358190-1600x900

For my next member I needed a scout class. And to me there is only one man that is versatile enough to be high tech, stealthy and agile all at the same time. Sam Fisher.

He’s a perfect middle-man. Not only is he the perfect scout, but he can also support the other members of the team. He can be stealthy, but has also mastered the use of almost every modern firearm, and is even a master of Krav Maga, so he wouldn’t be afraid to get stuck in the middle of a fire fight. He is also extremely agile and dexterous, so would be happy climbing and leaping off rooftops to scout the area. This would also make him a good potential scavenger, thanks to his ability to get to places no one else can. He has a variety of high tech gadgets and armaments such as his trademark goggles among many others. Finally, his knowledge of field craft, urban warfare, combat tactics, surveillance, infiltration and hacking is bound to help Commander Shepherd in his role as a leader and tactician.

In a team of just four people plus myself, I need all my team members to be as versatile as possible, and Sam Fisher’s experience and skill set fit the bill perfectly.

Contender – Connor – Assassin’s Creed 3

Equally adept in the wild as he is in urban areas, Connor has one up on his previous assassins as he is even more agile, and can also hunt and forage for survivability. However, he was just too-outdated for my needs.

Close Quarters – The Master Chief – Halo

For when the worst comes to the worst and the Zed’s get too close for comfort, any kill team needs someone able to step in and go toe-to toe with the horde and give the other team members time to retreat and regroup, or find an exit. You need someone big enough, strong enough and armored enough to stand in the face of death, while minimizing the risk of infection. Enter The Master Chief.

For those who have been stuck in the ground for the past decade, the Master Chief is a huge, hulking wall of genetically engineered super human brute force and endurance, encased in a high tech suit of power amour  complete with force shield. Able to take huge amounts of damage and with immense stores of endurance, he is also equipped with a range of powerful conventional and alien weapons at his disposal, meaning he can put out vast levels of firepower; perfect for cutting down wave after wave of zombies and not letting anyone past. If that’s not enough, the Master Chief does not have a shred of skin on show, he is the perfect choice to wade right in and beat those zombies to a pulp with his bare fists without any risk of infection. In terms of protecting his other team mates, there is simply no better choice.

Contenders – Axton – Borderlands 2

Is there any better way to help stave off a zombie hoard than not one, but two dual-cannon, rocket launching, health regenerating, laser guided, shielded gun turrets? Hardly.

Survivalist – “Steve” – Minecraft

steve-minecraft

A pretty unconventional choice for my fourth team member, but as any true aficionado knows, surviving in a post apocalyptic Zombie wasteland is not all about fighting and sieges. A true Zombie Killing Dream Team must be able to scrape out a living and plan for the long-term. That’s where our pixelated protagonist comes in. He is the ultimate survivalist; at the game’s beginning he is washed up in an undiscovered land with literally nothing except the clothes on his back and two blocky fists, which he can use to destroy and remake pretty much anything he puts his mind to. Need a shelter? Punch that tree and get some logs; hey presto, log cabin! He is completely adept at being resourceful and making full use of what he’s got.

Give him an hour or two and he will give you a small but workable castle, complete with torches, doors, an oven and plenty of storage. Give him longer, and just like a shady character in a prison movie, he can get you whatever you need. Running low on food? Steve can go and grab some seeds and get a fully functional and irrigated farm up and running. Old fort got destroyed? No problem, he will build you a veritable bunker, and can even decorate it with a few bookcases or portraits. He can even make maps and compasses to help our team navigate, or amour, weapons and explosives. The sky is, quite literally, the limit. For bonus points, he is also more than used to being close to danger, with evil exploding monsters coming out on a nightly basis to terrorize him and his creations.

Contenders – Max – Dark Chronicle

Tasked with pretty much rebuilding an entire world, not only does Max build entire towns, but takes citizens from his hometown to populate these new places. He can also use his trusty camera to gain inspiration to build all sorts of things. Unfortunately Max had to be omitted from the list, as the tool he uses to rebuild his world is a giant magic tree-robot piloted by seven alcoholic dwarves with purple beards. Yes. Really.

Myself – Specialist

217288_10150557632995355_6084678_n

Years of gaming has honed my reflexes and hand-eye co-ordination skills to an almost superhuman degree, so I will be able to assist my fellow team members in combat. Due to where we will be setting up our base/making our stand, I will also have essential knowledge about our locality; where to find supplies and so on. With my existing knowledge and prowess in surviving in zombie apocalypses, I will also be invaluable to Commander Shepherd while he is planning his next moves and leading the team. Finally, with my at least enthusiast-level in cooking, I will be able to whip up culinary masterpieces out of whatever meager scraps we manage so scavenge in the ruins.

Oh, alright, who am I kidding, I’ll probably end up being the cabin boy.

Headquarters – My Office

Office

Situated roughly a mile away from the local town center and only a few miles from Manchester, this building is ideally located; being far away enough from any traditional zombie hotspots  but close enough to venture in to town to scavenge for food or supplies. The office is situated on a u-bend of a local river, and is ringed by a medium sized wall, with only one gated entrance. The office is three stories high as well, so plenty of room for posting a lookout on the roof for any zombies that wander too close. The office is also fairly large, so plenty of room to accommodate any survivors, or set up bottlenecks and traps in case the worst comes to worst. It’s only main weakness is that although its one entrance makes it easy to defend and monitor, it will also make it difficult to escape if the horde is on the doorstep.

XX: The Mystery Revealed!

The cover for issue #1 of Brian Wood and Olivier Coipel’s X-Men has been released, after an agonising week in which the internet tried to decipher the meaning behind the mysterious “XX” teaser.  By which I mean, everyone figured it would be X-Women, and it is.

Marvel makes up for the lack of surprise, by having the best lineup in the history of ever.  The main character is Jubilee (eeep!) with Rogue, Storm, Psylocke, Kitty Pryde and Rachel Grey as recurring cast members.  So, this is definitely one that I’ll add to my pull list!

Reports that the male team will be referred to as the Y-Men remain unconfirmed.
