Pen & Paper Role-Play Gamers I Need Your Help!

DSC02954

Dear Fellow Role-players,

I am keen to find out if there is any correlation or pattern between our real life selves and the characters we create. To assist on this endeavour I am asking  for help from role-players to gather information to write an article. So no matter what systems, genres or characters you play I am looking for your input. I am insisting that the characters you talk about are from a pen and paper role-play as this will be the basis of my article.

If you are interested then firstly you are awesome and secondly you need to click on the link below and answer the questions. Alternatively you can download the document and e-mail it to [email protected]

Once I have your responses I will collate the information and come to some kind of conclusion.  Your assistance shall be acknowledged if you want it to be, otherwise I’ll refer to you as something cool like Mr X or Mistress Awesome, the choice is yours.

Dust and Sand – Chapter 30 – By Sean P. Wallace

Chapter 30

Penelope disrobed and lay on the stone altar. Cold which had previously sucked on her like a tick now caressed her and made her shiver with pleasure. The hooded cultists removed their clothes too, men and women, child and adult. Some were inhuman as she’d expected, expanding and pouring out of their clothes like bubbles blown through cloth hoops. Once naked, they sang and chanted and touched one another, reaching hands and claws and four foot tongues down to begin their orgy. To begin their ritual. To begin inducting Penelope into their order.

Her decision made, she was still nervous, a sick fear that roiled even as her physical joy increased. The climax she had been threatened with before now built within her brick by fleshy brick. This time, Penelope embraced it. Her nervous, inexperienced hands explored her flesh as they had only once before; even these fumbles were whips to the slaves building a perfect temple of pleasures.

The chanting rose, a great and wonderful drone that surged through her again and again. Her hands found the rhythm of the ritual and aped it, driving her closer and closer. Through half-closed eyes she saw lights like multicoloured angels flaring around her, circling and dipping on invisible wings. The air tasted like ripe oranges.

Penelope’s life, her very existence, became a rapture, a palpitating joy that soaked through every inch of her. All she’d had to do was give in to That Which Sins to experience this but her horrible and restrictive morals had held her back from this wonder. More brilliant joy poured through her. By That Which Sins, Eleanor had been right; Penelope could never consider going back to being a mundane and weak flower growing in a pale batch of moonlight under the yoke of the Christian god.

And then she reached the point of no return, the great explosion. Every part of her shuddered and juddered and jived as she drove herself to the edge. There was no stopping it, her senses were a stampede and they ran over the cliff of an amazing burst of the greatest and most wonderful sensation she had ever experienced.

This, she managed to think, was a real heaven.

The climax passed and left her numb. She could feel nothing of her body or her mind. The lights danced around her, leaving sparkling trails that dropped onto her skin. She watched the cultists chant at her but paid them no mind.

Her other senses reluctantly returned. The scent of oranges assailed her first but they were now rotten, horrible things from a damp cellar. Penelope tried to gag, the stink so bad she could taste it, but her body wouldn’t respond; all she could do was feel more and more sick at the mulched sourness on her tongue.

Then the cultists’ chanting changed, becoming a deep, sonorous dirge. Penelope could not understand the words but she could tell the intent behind them, the desire to inflict something cruel and horrible onto her. Atop feeling sick, she panicked and felt herself try to hyperventilate. But she couldn’t move, couldn’t even lift her head to see what was happening to her.

A grinding pleasure, something as dutiful as it was enjoyable, began to fill her. Her fingertips became less numb and she felt them dancing across her body, some twisting and playing with parts of her and others delving deep into her orifices. But they were doing so of their own accord, without her command. Again she wanted to panic and again she was not allowed to.

Penelope had become a prisoner in her own body.

The binding bliss circled her mind like a snake and blurred her vision, dulled the chants to a deep monotone. At least it also stole away the stench of rotten fruit but that was small comfort.

Had she done the right thing in agreeing to this ritual? The initial pleasure had been a joy, a revelation of the hidden wonders in her flesh, but this new experience frightened her. Was this really how all believers were initiated into That Which Sins’ ranks? She hadn’t thought to question it at the time – she’d heard so many orgies during her incarceration that she’d thought them commonplace – but now she wished she had.

“Relax,” something whispered. Its voice was oily and sweet. “Everything is okay.”

For a moment, she believed it. Then she felt a pain in an indefinable place, not physical but very real, as though the pleasure surrounding her senses had pierced her essence like a scorpion or a cactus.

“This will be quick,” the voice said. “Then you will be mine.”

Penelope felt cold. The voice belonged to That Which Sins. It was not the voice of something which loved her. It wasn’t even the voice of something that wanted her to be free. No, the voice she heard belonged to something which rolled in excess and waste and loved bringing others in to join it.

And she had given herself to it. Willingly.

5 Things I Learned While Playing FTL

FTL

FTL is one hell of a game. Play it right and you can have hours of joy and a sense of accomplishment usually reserved for people who can eat fifty hotdogs in a minute. Play it wrong, however, and you will never have been more likely to ragequit. It’s a tough galaxy out there, so pull up a seat rookie, and let this old veteran tell you what’s what.

1) “Do You Think This Is A Game, Marine?!”. Or; It Pays To Have A Good Imagination.

The real magic in FTL isn’t so much as overcoming impossible odds or strict micromanagement; it’s the feeling you get as you soar through space. Those men/space slugs/piles of rock you command are not simply figures walking around small grey rooms; they are a dashing captain and his loyal crew; a few small men in a big galaxy; fighting pirates and overcoming the odds. They are Kirk and Spock; Shepherd and Joker, Bill Adama and Saul Tigh. You are not just trying to complete a game; you are your own space opera, on a journey of highs and, more often than not, many lows, with each jump bringing a new chapter in the story, a new adventure and new dangers. Embrace it, and I promise your enjoyment of the game will double.

2) “How To Hand Your Ship To A Pirate; 101”. Or; Why There’s No Such Thing As Heroes.

Possibly one of my biggest failures actually came out of nowhere when I had a pirate on the back foot. My opening salvo had crippled their shield generator and damaged their weapons systems without me taking so much as a scratch. Then, I pushed my advantage too far. I wanted to use my new crew transporter to take the ship without destroying it.

In went my one and only combat able crewman, but with no sensors to see the inside of the enemy ship he teleported straight into an inferno and, unexpectedly, a mass of enemy soldiers. I watched helplessly as he was tragically cut down before the transporter could recharge, and although I won the fight I lost the war, as with only 2 crewmembers; the HMS Barry White quickly got overwhelmed and destroyed a couple of systems later.

212680_screenshots_2012-09-27_00001

Optimism is the bane of FTL. Hell, it practically feeds off cockiness. I can’t count the times I’ve thought my strategy was unbeatable, where I picked fights when maybe my ship was slightly too damaged, or not backed out when it was slightly too much on fire, even though I had a charged FTL Drive. This leads me on to my next point;

3) “The Fleet Can Wait!”. Or; Hoarding Is Good.

When you are one ship trapped in a hostile sector with a clearly marked exit on one side and a pursuing rebel fleet on the other, what would be your first move?

If you answered “head for the exit” or “surrender”, then get back to the academy, rookie! But if you answered “spend as much time as possible exploring, putting yourself, the crew and the ship in constant mortal danger and prolonging the delivery of the vital data you have to the federation fleet, all for the sake of some scrap metal” then…well, correct, actually. This game really rewards those that go out of their way to get not just the best loot possible; but ALL loot possible. You really can’t survive long without a constant income of scrap and fuel, and if you attempt to go from A to B, you will quickly become underpowered. So if you play Skyrim or Fallout and barely leave a house without every cabbage, plate and item of clothing then well done captain, you may have a fighting chance!

ftl12_1

4) “Difficult Terrain Still Exists In Space”. Or; Be Mindful of Your Surroundings.

Most battles in FTL; especially those later on in the game, are long, intricate affairs, timing exactly when to

fire this missile or those lasers, prioritizing which systems to target, repairing your own systems, repelling boarders and more, all at the same time. However, a true commander must not let the demanding nature of battles distract them. Just because you’re in space doesn’t mean there’s no environmental hazards. Fires sweep through your ship from solar flares; asteroids destroy your shields and pepper your hull, and don’t even get me started on Ion storms. God damn Ion storms.

FTLshot3

Fail to pay attention to any one of these problems and you’re going to have a bad time. Turn them to your advantage however, maybe time your attacks for when an asteroid downs an enemy’s shields for example, and you can make a long and difficult battle very short.

5) “Employee Welfare Is For Wimps”. Or; Ruthlessness is a Virtue.

One thing you will find yourself constantly doing in FTL is managing your power supply and redirecting it to different systems depending on the situation. You can upgrade and get a bigger reactor, but will almost always just have enough to see you through your trip through the galaxy. This means that in pressing situations you may have to make some tough decisions. Enemy’s weapons too strong? More power to the engines, evasive maneuvers!  No more power to spare? Turn off the Oxygen! Of course it’s safe; they can hold their breath can’t they! Pretty much no tactic is forbidden. Using alien bio energy as a power source, turning them into little more than portable batteries? Keeping the helm manned even as crewmembers struggle to put out infernos in the engine room by themselves? Go for it, it’s all for the good of the Federation!

I hear what you’re saying. Matt, you say, I’m a good commander. I’m a Picard, not a pirate. But I absolutely guarantee that towards the endgame, when you’ve been struggling through for a while with rapidly dwindling scrap, you might just start considering powering down the medbay instead of wasting valuable scrap on a bigger reactor. Who needs health insurance anyway? We’re at war, son!

Anyone disagree? Anyone have any better hints or tips? Let us know!

Throw Out Your TV – Top 5 Geek Webseries

0
F*ck, yeah!
F*ck, yeah!

Everything is getting smaller and faster. Computers which would have taken up an entire room forty years ago are now small enough to fit in your pocket and staying in touch with family abroad took weeks before the advent of email and Skype. The future is Speedy Gonzales riding a bullet, and nowhere else is this more evident than with the rise of the web-series.

Traditionally-made television programs can be up to sixty long minutes of constant attention-requiring coloured lights, unrelenting talking and having to listen to.. ooh a squirrel! Attention spans are getting shorter by the second and the MTV-watching, Digimon-chasing youth of today demand instant gratification from their pop culture providers. This is where the web-series steps in. Web-series are internet-based TV series consisting of a number of five-minute or so episodes, the perfect length for those who usually find themselves changing channel once the opening credits roll or those who like to watch cartoons while they poo.

With that in mind, allow us to present our Top 5 greatest geek-flavoured web-series. Please note that I’ve only included on-going series’, not miniseries’ otherwise Forward Unto Dawn would occupy all five goddamn spots…

5. Superf*ckers (NSFW)

Jack Krack is the motherfucker

Superf*ckers is based on the relatively indie comic by James Kochalka about the day-to-day life of a group of superheroes. So far so seen-it-a-bajillion-times. The difference? These guys are utter douchebags. They treat each other like shit and have ideals no more heroic than getting high and hazing the endless line of pathetic losers who want to join their favourite superteam. Weird, coarse and a new word that combines nauseating and awesome – nauwsoeame.

4. H+

More than human

Produced by Brian “X-Men 2” Singer and with better production values than most new shows last year, H+ envisions a world where personal computers can be implanted directly into peoples brains, a veritable technological utopia where you can check your email or watch television in the privacy of your own head. A utopia that is until some bright spark creates a computer virus that kills one third of the world’s population. Hilarity ensues.

3. Bravest Warriors

Space-venture Time!

Pendelton Ward’s Adventure Time is quite possibly one the finest cartoons in what is arguably the Second Golden Age of Kids TV. Bravest Warriors is a web-series by the same fella about four teenage space adventurers keeping the universe safe after the disappearance of their parents who previously held that responsibility. And it’s so amazing I’m just going to throw you some of the concepts and I challenge you to get to the end without a compelling urge to press play on that bad boy. A falcon that turns into an axe. A blue half-cat, half-ladybird. Invisible Martian Hideout. They fly around in a Space Whale. Time Slime. Professor Fartsparkles. A bee that turns into a sword…just watch it already!

2. The Guild

Felicia’d

Boasting star turns by Felicia Day, Wil Wheaton and Nathan “Captain” Fillion, The Guild is an award-winning geekfest comedy about a guild of MMORPG (massively-multiplayer online roleplaying game) players who find themselves forced to interact with each other IRL (in real life) with varying DOS (degrees of success). Anyone who spends their weekends chasing the (level 20 frost) dragon or still sports needle marks on their arm from years of WOW abuse will see themselves in one of the instantly relatable characters and, even if you’ve never even buffed a tank, the trials and tribulations of Codex, Zaboo, Vork, Bladezz, Clara and Tinkerballa will soon have you clamouring for Season 7 with the rest of us.

1. Red vs Blue

Thrills, spills and team kills…

One of the longest-running web series our there, this Halo-based comedy has evolved over the years into a bona fide space epic encompassing everything from time travel to megalomaniacal AIs to…erm…male pregnancy…and beyond! Although it uses the various Halo engines to animate the characters and is, ostensibly, set in the Halo universe, this show requires zero prior reading and will appeal to even those few who wouldn’t give the time of day to Bungie’s hugely popular FPS series. Come for the dick jokes, stay for the moment the plot explodes and it’s turned into one of your favourite sci-fi shows, web based or otherwise. And with Season 10 on the event horizon, there’s never been a better time to find out if they’ll save the universe or the reds will just get rid of those dirty blues once and for all.

Dust and Sand – Chapter 29 – By Sean P. Wallace

Chapter 29

Dust flexed his fingers, his other gun resting comfortably between his hands. It felt damn good to hold it and not feel like a five-year old picking up his pa’s weapon. And it felt even better to have used it to rip apart a cult of the Triangle.

“I’ve destroyed everything you’ve worked for, haven’t I?”” he asked.

The Faustian – the geniuses’ word, not his – smiled, his wild eyes crinkling above his mask. “Almost everything. But not Penelope. And not an important alliance,” he said. His eyes moved toward the chamber’s exit.

Dust indulged him, looked across. At the stairway was Naismith. Swaddled in cultists’ clothing, blood dripping down her hands, she was trying to sneak away when the Faustian called attention to her. Dust hadn’t recognised her in the heat of battle but he now realised she’d been part of a threesome enjoying itself so much that it hadn’t noticed the slaughter of their brethren. When they had ceased, he had assumed Godly Claw had killed them. Clearly not.

There was a strong taste of magic about her. Panic rose in him as he wondered how the cult had turned her so quickly. Then he realised it wasn’t possible to convert someone so rapidly.

“Naismith?””

She jumped, then turned and smiled away her shock, a wicked grin on her young face. Blood-dipped hands clasped together, spraying a fine red mist. Her hair was loose and she looked relieved and relaxed. “Dust. I guess you had to find out. It would not have been fitting otherwise.”

Dust’s heart fell to the floor when her sleeves rolled down and revealed, inches above her elbows, the tattoos of a follower of Omnis. “Oh fuck.”

Naismith followed his gaze then laughed. “Yes, yes, I am Omnis’.”

“How did you hide it?” Shadows Fade shouted. Dust would’ve turned but he couldn’t take his eyes off Naismith.

“Oh. It can talk. Well, pardon my crudity but fuck you, you red-skinned bitch.”

Shadows Fade growled back.

The Faustian then launched himself at Dust, dark magic flaring across his pale skin. He’d only pointed Naismith out to distract Dust and the tactic proved successful when his fist smacked against Dust’s chin. The magic tried to bury into his skin but Resistance didn’t let it, flared counter-magic without Dust having to ask.

It wasn’t enough to stop the Faustian knocking him into the air. Dust crashed down, skidded across the ceremony chamber on his shoulder and only stopped when he smacked against the central altar.

“Well, you three just enjoy yourselves with… him,” Naismith shouted, joy tingeing her voice. “I shall never see you again but I just want you to know; you all sicken me more than you could possibly comprehend. Bye bye!”

With that, she ran upstairs and escaped.

“Sickening bitch, isn’t she?” the Faustian said with another smile. His voice had returned to is regular softness but mania danced on its edges still.

Dust stood, his shoulder hurting. “Yep.”

“And you let yourself get captured for her? That’s got to hurt.”

It did. Badly. He hadn’t trusted his instincts, had let her in, treated her as a partner and a warrior and she had spat on him for doing so. Just imagining her brought a fire into him, a great conflagration he was almost scared of. He couldn’t indulge it or consider what this treachery meant for the Solution; for now, he had to concentrate on rescuing Penelope.

“It hurt more than your little tickle,” Dust replied, lightly rubbing his chin.

The Faustian laughed again, hollow and whistling.

“Shadows Fade?” Dust asked, unwilling to take his eyes off the Faustian again.

“Yes?”

“How’s Penelope?”

She paused. In the silence, the Faustian walked forward, his magic slowly waltzing around his form. “She is almost too far gone. I will prevent her falling completely but it is not something I can maintain.”

He cast his senses back to judge how long he had. Shadows Fade would cope for minutes at most; he felt in Penelope the same magic as was in the Father’s Word. She was being invested with a piece of That Which Sins and the warrior was not powerful enough to hold it at bay.

““It’s an Avatar you’re after?” Dust asked, deciding to move to the offensive.

That slowed the bastard. “How did you know that?”

It was Dust’s turn to launch an unexpected attack, firing a shot between the Faustian’s widened eyes. The dark magic surging across his body deflected the shot but its strength was lessened by the blow, robbing the bastard of one destructive surge at least.

The Faustian took a deep breath and charged, moving at that incredible rate. Whole again, Dust could meet him properly; he spun his other gun around and struck it against the black material of the bastard’s shirt. Both attacks were hay-makers. Their magics, the strengths of their wills, clashed and the flare blocked out the chandelier’s light.

For magic was really the application of will, the strength of your character and your desire to achieve your aims. Everyone has a pool of magic they can call upon with training but it’s how much you want to use it that matters. The principle applied even more for magic which wasn’t yours, magic begged, borrowed or gifted from the gods. So when the Wanted Man and a Faustian of That Which Sins clashed, both convinced they were in the right, whoever wanted it more would win.

In the instant between them coming together and their magic flaring, it proved there was nothing between them and both were knocked back. Dust landed on an unused altar behind him and crushed it, winded instantly. Whereas the Faustian landed on the other side of the room with his neck at an awkward angle, one that would have killed someone who didn’t have his rubbery physique.

Dust pulled himself from the remains of the carved altar, marble dust and debris dropping from his clothes. He took deep breaths as he moved, letting his connection with Resistance rebuild his bruised body. At the same time, the Faustian rolled over and set his neck back between his shoulders like a pale gem. He cricked his head from side to side and stood.

Without talking they clashed again, grey gunmetal against white flesh. They struck each other over and over, their magics flaring like caustic fireworks. The cast-off power struck them both, singeing Dust’s skin and tearing at the magic surrounding the Faustian.

Invincible: Graphic Novel Review 9 GPP

Invincible 1

Many people who read this will know that Invincible’s creator, ‘Robert Kirkman’, was the creator of ‘The Walking Dead’.  I admit I am a fan of his, and I have to boost Invincible for Kirkman lovers and fans of The Walking Dead. Invincible was first published back in 2003, however this was not his first appearance.  He first appeared in the little known ‘Image Comics’ production ‘Tech Jacket’ before getting his own self-titled series.  With Marvel and DC pretty much having ruled the roost when it came to Super Heroes, at first it was hard to see where a graphic novel such as Invincible would fit into the picture.  Although Mr Kirkman worked wonders on the characters and the storyline, he also manages to fit in a few not so subtle parodies aimed in the two mighty behemoths’ direction – a tip of the cap as it were to all those who went before it. These can be easily seen in ‘The Guardians of the Globe’ (Justice League) or ‘DarkWing’ (a Batman parody) whom we first meet in a city without sunlight, which the American government urged and or paid for everybody to vacate the city, turning it into a ‘No Man’s Land’ like ‘Gotham City’ was for a period.  However these are but mere glances at works that have gone before Invincible, the main storyline and the characters are well fleshed out and for a Super Hero story as believable as can be.

Invincible 2

The story itself revolves around a teenage boy by the name of Mark Sebastian Grayson, son of Nolan Grayson (Omni-man) one of the greatest super heroes earth has ever seen, and his mother Deborah Grayson. It starts very early on with Mark getting his powers, something which he has been waiting for for some time – having been told by his Dad that he may get them when he grows up. Of course having ‘Omni-man’ for a father, the first thing that Mark wishes to do is fight crime.  At the start he finds it rather easy. He falls in with a small super-hero team and enjoys himself, whilst continuing to attend high-school and deal with a part-time job. Then after an event happens, a dark secret gets revealed; things all begin to change and take on a much more serious edge for Mark.

Whilst I do talk of seriousness and dark secrets, you should be under no illusion; this graphic novel does know how to not take itself too seriously, though still delivering good well-paced storyline.

The two artists who helped Kirkman create this masterpiece are one ‘Corey Walker’, best known for his work here, ‘Spiderman’, ‘The Punisher’ and ‘Destroyer MAX’, the other ‘Ryan Ottley’ was found by Kirkman himself as Ottley was working on the webcomic strip: ‘Ted Noodleman: Bicycle delivery boy’.  Upon seeing his work, Kirkman offered him a job to work with him on Invincible.  Both artists are extremely capable, and it is shown in their artwork.

Invincible 3

There are some people who dislike gore/violence in their graphic novels.  I believe if it is not overdone, it can add to the drama and tension of a storyline.  I always disliked (in anything I watched or read) the hero being thrown through buildings, or taking bullets, and shrugging them off as if they were merely inconvenienced and there being no physical sign of damage to the man/woman in question. As the picture above shows, this is not a problem you can expect to encounter in Invincible.  I believe the line is well trodden, and never has a problem with showing severity where needed.

In conclusion, if I were to be pushed, I would actually rate Invincible higher than Kirkman’s runaway hit ‘The Walking Dead’.  I would much have preferred a television series and game to be made of this.  However producers need to go with what sells, and following the poor sales at the beginning of Invincible I am not surprised it went Walking Dead’s way. If I were a person who didn’t know whether or not they wished to buy this graphic novel then I suggest reading other peoples reviews – they are all over the internet and nearly all glowing.

Resident Evil 5 Review

It's Resident Evil, Jim, but not as we know it.
It’s Resident Evil, Jim, but not as we know it.

Lovers of the horror genre will no doubt look back fondly upon Capcom and Resident Evil for completely changing the action-adventure genre into what is now known as ‘Survival Horror’. The first steps into the deserted mansion, the first sight of a zombie chewing on a dead mans face, it was simply put a masterpiece.

Now 4 games later is it still the same style of game? No, no it’s not, but does that mean it’s a bad game? Once more the answer is a definite no. Sure there will be Resident Evil fanboys out there who will pump their fists and shout, ‘It has to be survival-horror!’ Well, does it really? We’ve gone through the horrific opening scenes of a completely unknown situation, we’re now into all out war with a power-hungry corporation that’s caused a large-scale biological disaster.

Chris Redfield and Sheva Alomar
Chris Redfield and Sheva Alomar

This incarnation of the game looks fantastic, the backdrops of steaming swamps and temple ruins have been expertly crafted and make it one of the most realistic Resi games to-date. This game will never make you feel scared about going into a dark room, but it is an action-packed campaign where you play the original protagonist Chris Redfield. Redfield is accompanied in his journey around the fictitious African province of Kijuju, by local B.S.A.A agent, Sheva Alomar. This is a hindrance to the games wish to make you feel scared, with Sheva you have that added sense of security, you are no longer alone.

images (4)

The artificial intelligence of Sheva is very rarely called into question, she doesn’t feel like extra baggage, like say the Presidents daughter does in Resident Evil 4. Sadly with most A.I characters in this type of game, she does have a habit of wasting health packs when she only has a slight bit of damage.

capcomCampaign-wise the story is quite good, it’s not overly stretched out and for a game where zombies and deformed monsters are abound it’s not completely off-the-wall insane like some story-lines I know of. If your a fan of the original Resident Evil games, this might not be quite your scene anymore, but if you enjoy a good third-person action-shooter then I suggest you go out and buy this game.
