System Shock 2 Finally Allowed A Re-Release

Good news everyone! Ahem… sorry – my Hubert Farnsworth impression needs work. Anyway – this isn’t just good news, it’s awesome news: it looks like the all-time PC classic System Shock 2 may finally be is confirmed to be getting the re-release that fans have been clamoring for since current PCs had issues running it.

*UPDATE!* This news has now been confirmed, and System Shock 2 will be available on GOG.com & Steam for the bargain price of $10 from 6am EST/10am GMT on Valentine’s Day… An ideal gift for the geek that has everything (except this).

If you’re not familiar with System Shock 2 (shame on you if that’s the case… bad rubber piggy!), then here’s a brief rundown for you:

The sequel to 1994’s System Shock, SS2 was a First-Person Shooter/action/survival horror/RPG designed by Ken Levine, where you play a soldier stranded on a starship that’s been ravaged by a genetic infection, and your goal was to quash the infection and featured the infamous AI Shodan.

The game is very much like Deus Ex (which took inspiration from SS2) in that it’s a menagerie of gameplay types – it incorporated FPS elements with roleplaying and skill development like hacking, along with psionic abilities

1999’s cyberpunk cult classic was eventually followed by it’s spiritual successor Bioshock – this was due to the game not being allowed a true sequel as EA had the rights to the game, and just sat on their arse and did nothing with it – the psionic abilities from SS2 then evolved into the plasmids for the Bioshock series.

Flesh Eating Zipper report that now it looks like rather than resting on their laurels, EA have finally seen the error of their ways (or they’ve possibly just relented under the pressure of constant geek earbashing) and may be bringing the title up-to-date with a re-release, possibly onto Steam as well. There’s no confirmation whether it’ll receive the HD treatment though… but that would be amazing. Oooh an HD remake of both Shock games… *drools* What? I can dream can’t I?

I heartily recommend you pick up System Shock 2 – it’s one of those landmark titles that you MUST play, along with games like Deus Ex etc. If you don’t… then the bunny gets it. 😉

Book Review: The Infernal Devices – 10 GPPs

0

Straight to the point: The prequel to the highly loved series The Mortal Instruments, The Infernal Devices proves itself to be better than the series that brought Cassandra Clare her fame, creating an original world, populated with likable characters and with a story that will keep you glued to the page.

Clockwork Angel

So far the series consists of two books: Clockwork  Angel and Clockwork Prince,  the final book Clockwork Princess set to be release in March. The story focuses just as TMI do on the adventures of a small group of young Nephilims, humans born with the blood of the Angel Raziel running through their veins. Unlike The Fallen series by Thomas Sniegoski these angelic creatures aren’t made by the unlawful mix of humans and angels, but by drinking the blood of the angel from a Mortal Cup, turning them into more or less super-powered humans, engineered to protect the human race from the demons of Hell who enjoy rampaging whenever they get the chance. The universe, like that of many fantasy books of late is populated by witches, warlocks, vampires and werewolves, fairies and a whole lot of other supernatural creatures, some so mysterious that no one can actually identify.

This particular series is targeting young adults and is usually marketed as such, with the heroes themselves being teenagers who end up living adventures that many of us couldn’t even dream of. The main characters are Will Herondale, an ancestor of Jace (the hero of The Mortal Instruments), Jem Carstairs, a Nephilim that has a tragic story that has probably made a lot of fans shed tears and Tessa Gray, a seemingly normal girl who gets thrown into a world she doesn’t understand. Perhaps the parallels with The Mortal Instruments are obvious for those that have read that series first, but the story is quite original and holds its own when compared to it’s sequel. In my opinion it’s actually somewhat better, given that Cassandra Clare started to work on it after partially having finished her other series. The world she creates makes more sense and the adventures are less predictable, with the mystery usually unresolved until the final pages of each book. With a third book coming up, The Infernal Devices has obviously earned its stripes, the internet buzzing with anticipation regarding the possible resolution of the story.

tumblr_llrwc7akM01qzmdgr Each of the two books already published in the trilogy focus on one of our heroes – Will being the male lead in Clockwork Angel and Jem taking his place in Clockwork Prince, though Tessa Gray is the main protagonist, her being the voice we mostly hear throughout the two books, her importance unfathomed by anyone from the Nephilim group who, while they regard her as a friend, are still unfamiliar with what exactly she is and how her existence affects the world they all live in. The books have it all: the political side, the spiritual and mystery side, with just enough violence thrown into the  mix to keep everyone interested, not to mention the romantic subplot that, for many fans, has taken centre stage. While it doesn’t entirely focus on this, each of the books allots an important part to the love angle in a world governed by rules as old as time; forbidden romance being a key point that for once adds to the story rather than take from it.

With a potential movie in development, hopefully not in “development hell,” The Infernal Devices has the chance of becoming a phenomenon much like other young adult books have before it, such as Hunger Games or it’s own “sister” series The Mortal Instruments, which will be brought to the big screens this August. All in all, it’s well worth a read, but stay away if the fantasy genre is not your cup of tea.

Your Geek Pride Zombie Apocalypse Health and Safety Officer here! We all sometimes wish the ZA would come so we can revel at everyone else’s failings to properly prepare. So imagine you are in Montana, tuning into the scheduled Steve Wilkos show ready to find out if the featured teen cheaters pass their lie detector test when suddenly the following happens.

We know this is fake, it actually happened on Monday when the local TV stations emergency broadcast system was hacked. But what if it was you watching? Okay so the voice was a little too fake and the term “bodies of the dead are rising from their graves” doesn’t seem the right way to break this kind of news. Doesn’t sound err… sciencey enough. I did like the scrolling banner touch, helped add a little realism.

So I ask you to use your vivid and well trained imagination to put yourself in that moment, would you believe? Panic? Google? Begin filling all containers with fresh water and boarding up the windows? Or just run outside and check? I’m genuinely interested to know, comment below or on our Facebook page

Spotlight: Sword of Sorcery – 8GPPs

0

I was thinking to myself the other day about new and exciting things I could write about, and I decided to do a spotlight series, where I’ll talk about a comic I particularly like (or can at least muster up some entertaining, frothing-at-the-mouth hate for) and explain slowly and patiently why you should like it too. With this in mind, I put a list together, and then DC went and cancelled one of the titles on my list, because DC are angry that I took Suicide Squad off my pull list and want to get their revenge.  So I guess this is part spotlight, part retrospective. Whatever. I’m just making it up as I go along. Sssh, don’t tell the editors, they think I’ve got my shit together.

Sword of Sorcery seemed like it was made especially for me, or more specifically, the little daydream avatar of me who has awesome dresses and mystical jewellery, wields a sword, and yells things like “But I was just PRETENDING your energy beams were weakening me, Lord Deathkill, they actually made me STRONGER!” It was a comic for the girls who grew up with Barbie and Disney princesses, but also Buffy and the X-Men. It was a comic you could read in a tree. If you licked it, it would taste of butterscotch Angel Delight with sprinkles.

Sorry, in the pink haze of nostalgia I forgot to actually explain what Sword of Sorcery is about. Silly me. It tells the story of Amy, a misfit high school student who travels around a lot with her cool but crazy mother, who insists on teaching her things like swordplay, hand-to-hand combat, the mystical properties of stones and such. One day, Amy finds out that she is actually Princess Amaya of the House of Amethyst, and must return to the alternate dimension of Nilaa to learn magic and defeat her evil aunt. What follows is a nice mix of political intrigue -all the different houses have their own agendas and peace treaties- and magical butt-kicking, as Amaya learns more about her heritage and destiny. So it goes without saying that it didn’t appeal so much to the core demographic.

In spite of the feminine slant to the main story, there is plenty for male readers to enjoy as well: fights are frequent and brutal, the plot of self-discovery whilst fighting a great evil is a solid favourite, and the costumes -though a little foofier than standard superhero couture- at least have the decency to show impressive amounts of cleavage. Sure, the average girl discovering she’s a powerful princess does have a hint of Mary Sue about it, and the land where everything revolves around shiny rocks is as twee as a flock of bluebirds, but it seemed as though Amaya and her young friend Ingvie were at least aware of this, and we were laughing along with them at the ridiculousness of it all.

Back-up feature Beowulf, on the other hand, takes place in a far future that looks suspiciously like the distant past, as though a nuclear holocaust left nobody alive but some incredibly lucky LARPers. It’s a pretty straightforward retelling of the Beowulf myth, but with the part of Beowulf played by Deathstroke, the part of Grendel played by a holdover from Amanda Waller’s Chimera-creating days, and the part of the iron trolls played by WayneTech robots. It’s a good enough twist to make the traditional fable seem new and interesting, and Deathstroke (though never mentioned here by name) is more interesting here than in his own series- which, not surprisingly, is also on DC’s death list. It compliments the main story well: Sword of Sorcery shows magic from the point of view of a girl used to iPhones and TV; Beowulf shows technology through the eyes of a superstitious village boy.  Beowulf provides the testosterone; the male characters in Sword of Sorcery are restricted to the roles of kindly uncles, minor villains, or the nice guy who will inevitably be promoted to love interest.  I liked that inversion of traditional gender roles, but at the same time can’t help but suspect that may have contributed to its downfall- would Sword of Sorcery have sold better if Beowulf was the headline feature?

I liked Sword of Sorcery. I liked getting transported back to my giddy childhood playtimes, even if it was for just twenty pages a month. And now it’s over.

Fuck you, DC.

PlayStation Meeting 2013: PS4ward thinking

PS4-meeting

PlayStation fans celebrate! We currently have just over a week left until the much anticipated PlayStation meeting in New York and the internet rumor mill is running high with talk of a potential new console launch before the end of this year in Japan, with Europe to follow early next year.

With this in mind, here’s a few other things that I would like to see, as well as a couple of things that I would like not to see, at the launch of PS4.

xlarge_dae6335630bd471b13917297cc53348fA reasonable price point

The current financial climate isn’t all that great for anyone at the moment and the days of many gamers being able to go out and spend the largest part of £500 on a new console are sadly at an end. Since the launch of the PS2 in 2000, Sony have been at the forefront of pushing new forms of higher quality video entertainment into homes. It’s a commonly known fact that the top-selling disc sold with PS2’s in Japan at launch was The Matrix on DVD and Bluray would likely have been nowhere near as popular as it has become if Sony hadn’t forced it upon every PS3 owner. However times have changed now, streaming media is king and Sony don’t have any new and expensive types of shiny disc on the horizon on which we will want to buy Blade Runner and Star Wars all over again so whilst a standard hard drive size of 500GB or more would be nice so would a price point which doesn’t necessitate getting a 2nd part-time job to justify a launch purchase.

More console-selling exclusivesps_network_exclusives_heade

The PS3 has given us some of the most innovative and original games of this generation and many PlayStation exclusives in recent years have been nothing short of brilliant. Sony have embraced and supported innovative developers such as ThatGameCompany in ways that should make Microsoft feel positively ashamed. When it comes to the current big three console brands, PlayStation stands out as the one which dares to be different however, sadly, the likes of Journey and The Unfinished Swan don’t sell consoles to the masses and in order for third party developers to really support the machine, PS4 will need a notable Gears of War or Halo equivalent capable of appealing to today’s frat-boy mentality.

This console generation may also be remembered for being the first where almost every major IP was multi-platform, and whilst the Xbox exclusives for 2013 don’t look like anything too special up to now, Microsoft will already have the added advantage of a much larger user-base when the next generation starts, which actually leads me on to my next point….

An improved PlayStation Network

For whatever reason, Sony decided to completely balls up the PlayStation Store after last E3 and seemingly haven’t been in any rush to respond to user-feedback and fix it.

Likewise PlayStation Plus is an incredible service which offers great value for money and easily trumps anything that Xbox Live Gold has to offer any more in my opinion but it’s let down by the frequent (and often unscheduled) downtime for maintenance  and download speed problems. The Xbox brand got a head start when it came to online gaming but there really is no excuse for Sony’s online problems to carry onto the next generation.

Better Vita integration

The Vita has the potential to be a great handheld system but is being held back by Sony’s lack of support. In many ways the Vita and PS3 are capable of replicating the mobile gaming experience seen on the Wii U but it’s just being massively underused and there aren’t really many Vita exclusives on the horizon at all this year. It would be nice if Sony could help to reassure Vita owners that they have wasted their money by including some great integration features on their next machine.

Sony-PlayStation-Move-Racing-Wheel-03No motion controls

In 2006 Nintendo released the Wii and we all got a bit tipsy and nearly injured ourselves taking a whack at a virtual tennis ball. Sony then included Six-Axis with the PS3 controller at launch before announcing Move a couple of years later and then finally there was Xbox Kinect, and that’s kind of where it all stopped being fun. We’ve done motion controls and we’re over them now. Fighting demons by rapidly shaking a controller and waving my arms around in front of a camera like a twat is something I’m quite happy to leave in the past.

No region protection

Sony have not included region locking on any of their consoles since the PSP. Let’s keep it that way.

There are other points that we could go into here such as fair pricing for full retail titles on the PlayStation Store, backwards compatibility and single user activation codes for retail games (which is something that I will write about separately if it does turn out to be a thing) but I think the general idea of this would be that if Sony want to win the next console war and become the market leader again then a few strategic changes will be in order.

Sony have made some pretty massive mistakes in this generation but being the first manufacturer to launch a truly next generation machine and making a few usability and brand changes could just be enough to turn their fortunes around.

Come back to Geek Pride on 21st February after the PlayStation Meeting for our views on what happened. After all, it may not be the PS4 and could just be the next chapter in the Wonderbook saga or a new Fisher-Price partnered plastic mobility scooter addon for the Move controller.

Whovians, unite!

Doctor-Who-Matt-Smith

My fellow Whovians: it is with a sad heart that I write to you today. Some may have heard the news already, but for those ‘who’ have managed to escape this bitter fate,  I feel it is my duty to tell you that Matt Smith may not be playing Dr Who for much longer!

To say this idea upsets me somewhat is but an understatement, as he is by far my favourite Doctor out of the new series’. Quirky, cute and ever so smart, he is the Doctor I want to never see leave my screen. However, Mr Smith has other plans it would seem.

On 7th February 2013, The Mirror writes “Doctor Who’s Matt Smith is heading to America after landing his first Hollywood film role alongside actresses Eva Mendes and Christina Hendricks”. They then go on to say “Matt is likely to do more and more films in the coming years, and one BBC source suggested this role was “the beginning of the end” of his time as Doctor Who”. It’ll be ok my Whovian nation.

hug_a_cat

The article continues, “A Doctor Who spokesman said: “As in previous years Matt is taking advantage of a gap in the Doctor Who production schedule to take on another project. It’s the 50th year of Doctor Who and Matt is committed to the show. He will be around for a while yet.”” There is a glimmer of hope.

If you wish to read the full article, mouth agape with horror, follow the link here: http://www.mirror.co.uk/tv/tv-news/doctor-who-matt-smiths-first-1592308

Thinking more logically (like Spock, naturally), Matt has already been in at least one feature length film previously. This calmed me somewhat, but you can never be certain. The hours are long, the days are arduous and rumours have been floating around the media grapevine that he is on his way to a burnout. Again, rumours.

Fear not though; nothing is confirmed yet, and while nothing is confirmed, I shall continue to live in my contented bubble of denial and you are all welcome to join me.

Dust and Sand – Chapter 31 – By Sean P. Wallace

Chapter 31

Dust woke to Shadows Fade and Penelope Chalmers dragging him through the cult’s temple. His dull eyes scanned them for wounds and found them safe, whole and without the Triangle’s taint. They’d won.

“He’s awake,” Penelope said, noticing his movement. She was thin, a skeleton dragging its skin around, but there had once been a pretty girl over that form and it shone through as she smiled shyly. She’d found some warm-looking clothes, plain shirts and hemp trousers, and swaddled herself in them.

Shadows Fade stopped and together they lifted him, let him stand without embarrassment. Dust planted his feet and stepped away. He’d thought he was tired after the fight in Crucifix but that was nothing; now his feet moved as though in quicksand and hurt like a bastard in the process.

“Are you okay?” Penelope asked.

“Never mind me,” Dust said. “How’re you?”

“She is clear of That Which Sins’ taint,” Shadows Fade said.

“That’s not what I asked; are you okay?”

“I don’t think I’ll be okay for quite some time, Mister Dust, but I can walk if that’s what you mean.”

He smiled at her bravery until fatigue collapsed the gesture. “What did they do to you?”

“Can we not talk about that now?” she asked. “I’m not… I haven’t come to terms with what actually happened in there. I need time to think about it. If that’s alright, sir?”

“I understand. Call me ‘Dust’ by the way.”

Penelope nodded and gave him another small smile.

“Can you travel?” Shadows Fade asked him.

Dust nodded.

“Are you sure? You fought one of the Triangle. Actually fought it. Even Resistance does not allow that without payment.”

When Shadows Fade put it like that, Dust wondered how he could even walk; Penelope had been close to becoming a Vessel when he’d found her and denying That Which Sins her prize at the last ought to have cost him more dearly. Then he remembered the extreme punishment Resistance had meted out for not shooting Naismith; it had felt justified at the time but perhaps Resistance had achieved two purposes with the same action. Something the god had been doing often recently.

“I think,” Dust said, flexing his bloated fingers, “Resistance took his payment in advance.”

Shadows Fade raised an eyebrow but said nothing.

Dust looked at Penelope and realised he’d forgotten something. “Did we kill everyone in the temple?”

“I’m sure we did,” the warrior replied.

“Were there any people with… very unusual magic in them?”

“What are you really asking, Dust?”

He looked back down the tunnel, followed it burrowing deep into the earth. A gentle breeze buffeted his hair but carried no sounds with it. “A girl called Margaret escaped this cult a while ago, seeking sanctuary with Father Kilkenny. She was a Vessel for That Which Sins; a stepping stone to creating an Avatar. Four more like her were with this cult.”

“Vessel, Avatar, I do not know these words. Explain,” Shadows Fade said.

“An Avatar is a physical piece of a god; a connection between them and our world. It would allow a god to act without proxies and demons, directly wield their powers.” They were plain words but Shadows Fade’s widened pupils told him she understood the horror involved. “The Father seemed to think these Vessels were part of building an Avatar, like bricks.”

Penelope’s arm started to shake. She gripped it tightly to her body. “And that’s what the ritual was for? To make me a piece of a puzzle?”

Dust cursed his lack of subtlety. “Yes.”

The girl took a deep breath. “Wow.”

Shadows Fade tapped her chin thoughtfully. “These Vessels are dead.”

“You certain?”

“Four of the cultists I killed contained the same kind of magic as that which fills the Soul Waters Father Kilkenny holds in his chapel,” she said. “Assuming this Margaret was the Soul Waters’ former owner?”

Dust took a second to connect ‘Soul Waters’ to ‘Word’. “Damn. Things would’ve been easier if I could’ve talked to you before.”

“Perhaps. But then Naismith would have known about the Soul Waters.”

“True,” he said, his voice low. “It worked out for the best.”

Naismith. Dust couldn’t believe she’d been a damn cultist the whole time, that she’d followed him into the Badlands only to ensure his death. Their journey made more sense now; her fancy gun, her reluctance to share a tent, the ‘freeze’ that left him high and dry… If he ever got his hands on her, there would be one Hell of a reckoning. His tattoo did not warm at the thought; that was what Resistance wanted.

Her betrayal also put the Solution under a different light. Dust’d have a lot to ask Dick when he got back. If they got there before Naismith.

“Let us hurry,” Shadows Fade said. “We can discuss this further on the way.”

He looked back down the depths of the temple as another thought kicked him. “Wait, the Bond.”

“What about it?” Shadows Fade asked.

“Can you imagine that being in the wrong hangs? We’ve got to go back for it.”

“Is that the metal thing we went and got?” Penelope asked.

Shadows Fade shot Penelope a sour look and then whistled. Godly Claw appeared ahead of them, the Bond in her mouth. The Spirit Wolf’s brilliant blue was still black from magical wounds but now it also faded where her teeth touched the artefact, becoming the grey of a normal wolf.

Dust grinned at Shadows Fade’s theatricality. Some people went in for looking that prepared and knowledgeable but Dust’d never thought it worthwhile. He didn’t blame the warrior for using such arts but seeing behind the curtains was amusing.

“Good,” Dust said. “Thanks.”

It must’ve taken him a while to come to as they were soon at the surface, emerging into heavy rain. The temple entrance was located in a valley, hidden behind two great boulders so casual observers couldn’t see it. The air was clear, crisp, and the rain was cleansing. Dust scanned the Badlands and felt only background magic; the consciousnesses that’d watched them earlier had grown bored and slumped back to their holes. He saw no movement either, the scavengers having been scared off by wards and fetishes dotted along the top of the valley.

PS3 Game Review: Hell Yeah! Wrath of a Dead Rabbit – 6GPPs

Hell Yeah WODR

If like me, you’re sick of the depressing, Limbo-esque style 2D platformers, then this game is right up your alley. At the moment I am just playing the trial version, but am sorely tempted into buying the game when my time has run out. ‘Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit’ on the face seems like your average platformer, but it’s the little differences that make this game so good.  I don’t think I’ve ever felt as evil as when I’m ploughing down monsters wearing Crocodile Dundee’s hat and my hovering blade machine is customised into a giant rubber duck inflatable. The creators of this game are ‘Arkedo Studios’, an independent French video game developer, founded in 2006 by ‘Camille Guermonprez ’and ‘Aurélien Régard’. The company have created six games before this – including ‘Arkedo Series’, a trilogy of games on X-Box Live Indie Games and the Playstation Network in 2009.

Their first two games however were for the Nintendo DS, ‘Nervous Brickdown’ in 2007 and ‘Big Bang Mini’ also in 2009.  Which actually is a great Segway into the ‘story-line’ of the game.  I say that in quotation marks because like a lot of these games, the story barely matters compared to the gameplay.  Anyway, you kill your dad and take over hell. However you have a little secret – a penchant for small rubber duckies in your bath. A member of the paparazzi snaps a picture of you in a rather suggestive position and puts it up on the ‘hellnet’ for all to see, and thus causes a scandal. Obviously the character you play ‘Ash, the princely un-dead rabbit-ruler of Hell’ cannot allow this, and upon seeing 100 demons have read this piece, sets out to kill all 100 monsters.

DeadRabbitInt

As you possibly can already tell, this is ‘Saints Row’, to ‘Limbo’s ‘Grand Theft Auto 4’, with a host of customisation options for yourself; your hovercraft blade-machine of death; a lot of inside gamer terminology; and wonderful over-the-top style graphics unique to each monster you kill. It’s got an old-school mentality of trial and error which I enjoy. The fact that you will die, and die often, in this platformer may put some people off playing it. However, with the market saturated with games that hold your hand throughout, this is a breath of fresh air. A great side note to this game is that after you drain a monster’s health bar, it doesn’t end there. To kill him, you have to do a variety of mini-games – this varies from charging up a battery for a miniature death ray, to a guitar hero style combo. This game is not afraid to make fun of itself and should never be taken seriously.  If you’re looking for a fun game you can pick up at any point when you just wish to kill things in a ‘cartoony’ style, you’ll want to get this game.

All in all, the music is good and in places quite catchy; I don’t wish to strangle the main character; I enjoy the brightly coloured backgrounds; and the gameplay mechanics are quite easy to use but occasionally impossible to master.

Jerome Street Art – Short Story

0

I have only just stumbled across wonderful piece of art, but was blown away by it. I cannot seem to find the creator but found it published on Movements and Nonsense, which also doesn’t list the artist. Despite not being able to properly credit this fantastic piece I wanted to share it with you. These photographs were taken on Jerome Street in the Bronx, a street known for its variety of street art. This piece of graffiti combines a little trolling with a touching outcome; a really cool concept, simple but effective.

If you know the source of this awesomeness please get in touch, I would love to credit them and find out what other pieces they have created.

A Pixar Approach to Marvel & DC

Marvel DC Pixar Mashup

Genre mashups have been rife online, and with companies like Disney taking over Marvel and now Lucasfilm, ideas get thrown around a lot with digital artists.

This morning I stumbled across Phil Postma‘s blog where he has combined the style of Pixar with a load of Marvel and DC characters, and was pleasantly surprised!

The Ottawa-based artist was exercising his Photoshop muscles by taking screen grabs of movies like The Incredibles and Brave, and incorporating a little comicbook flair.

Postma explains in his blog: “This project started after the announcement of Disney buying Marvel comics and all the the fans started making Pixar / Avengers images. Well I was not terribly happy with the images that they were doing, so I tried to do better.”

Have a look at this small selection of the images he came up with:

If you’re hungry for more, make sure you check out Phil Postma’s blog post for the full set of images – you won’t be disappointed.
