Peter Dinklage confirmed for X-Men: Days of Future Past

0

Yesterday Bryan Singer announced via Twitter that the ever enjoyable to watch Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage will be joining X-Men: Days of Future Past. Commence whoops of excitement all round!!

Dinklage will be joining an already outstanding cast including James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, and Nicholas Hoult reprising their roles. With the added bonus of  Patrick Stewart as old Professor Xavier, Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, Ian McKellen as old Magneto, Anna Paquin as Rogue, Ellen Page as Kitty Pride, and Shawn Ashmore as Iceman.

Speculation around the internet is shouting that the little actor with big talent will be playing Puck, the 3’6″ mercenary turned Alpha Flight member. Though I’m not sure how well this sits with me; I can’t recall Puck being in this particular story line and Google hasn’t been able to tell me any different. Though there is definitely a resemblance between the two (see below) I don’t believe we should jump to conclusions, instead just bask in the joy of such a charismatic and talented actor in what I hope turns out to be an epic film.

Ferals #13

0

Green Gorge, Washington. Agent Shoe and the F.B.I continue their investigation into Rikkard’s compound in the hills and the subsequent clean up .

Meanwhile in Fordbridge, British Columbia Chesnutt continues on his quest for vengeance against Rikkard after the death of Sophie.

Avatar the indie publisher known for seducing numerous writers with it’s anything goes policy has a reputation for titles that are not for the faint hearted. With a no holds barred approach to it’s depictions of brutal violence, sex and more disturbing things and Ferals is no exception .

Chesnutt gets the scent.
Chesnutt gets the scent.

The Dale Chesnutt here is a distinctly different man than the one who found the bloody remains of his best friend in issue #1 . So far Chesnutt has been infected by Gerda Ingebritsen and become a wolf-man himself, had a brutal battle with an alpha wolf, been abducted by the cult Gerda was part of, force fed the blood of the alpha wolf they worshiped in order to replace it ,then been caught by the F.B.I when they stormed the cults meeting place, and forced into helping them uncover the truth behind another suspected cult of wolfmen or ‘ferals’ .

Since then Chesnutt has gone undercover as Sven in Green Gorge, has had his undercover partner Pia ,posing as his wife Sophie, fall in love with him and get pregnant, then she’s been brutally murdered by Rikkard, the leader of a splinter group of the Green Gorge cult, (who has also been breeding his own alpha wolves against the order of cult leader Adolph) in payback for Chesnutt leading Adolph and shortly after the F.B.I to Rikkard’s place after Adolph’s men slaughtered the pregnant women.

On Rikkard's trail.
On Rikkard’s trail.

This issue is the start of a new story arc with Chesnutt focused on tracking down Rikkard for bloody vengeance leaving the F.B.I and the army to mop up the carnage in Green Gorge, left in the wake of Rikkard’s alpha wolves running amok in town. Whilst it’s definitely an acquired taste Lapham has carved out his own take on werewolf mythology here not falling on the traditional ‘rules’ but creating his own. The werewolves rather than being monsters are a people living in close knit communities scattered around the country amongst the population.

Artist Gabriel Andrade has been consistently handling whatever’s been required from animalistic sex, Chesnutt’s feverish hallucinations, brutal bloody violence, various locations, dialogue centric character moments and more besides. The colours from Digikore really pop too. Ferals almost matches Avatar’s notorious Crossed series for disturbing content. A key difference between the two being that while Crossed seems happy to wallow in the depths of shock for shock’s sake with writers seemingly trying to outdo each other Ferals has plenty going on besides sex and gore.

Free FPS based on Ghost In The Shell Incoming 2014

Shirow Masamune‘s Ghost In The Shell is one of my favourite Anime movies, and with it being one of the principal influences for The Matrix (another of my favourite movies)… any games based on it tend to make me drool.

So imagine my anime-esque cow-eyed look when I found out that Nexon (known for Maple Story among other things) are looking to unleash a free-to-play online FPS for the PC based on the Stand Alone Complex series.

There have been Ghost In The Shell games before – most notably for the PS2 and PSP. These haven’t been great, but I did remember having fun with the Spider Tanks.

For the uninitiated, Stand Alone Complex revolves around the members of “Public Security Section 9” – predominantly Major Motoko Kusanagi as they track an elite cyber-terrorist known as “The Laughing Man”.

What draws me towards GITS more than most other anime is the cyberpunk style and setting… much like the style of Neo Tokyo in Akira. With games like the Deus Ex series and movies like The Matrix, I really can’t get enough of the cyberpunk and hacker genre. However… I’m not a particularly patient man.

The release date is tentatively set for the first half of 2014, so I have the agonising wait of potentially over a year… and just like Nexon’s other free-to-play titles the game will be supported by microtransactions.

Nexon have also confirmed that this will not be the first project with Kodansha Ltd (the comic book publisher responsible for GITS:SAC)… so could we possibly see a Battle Angel Alita game sometime in the future? We can hope, can’t we?

Ford Returns As Our Favourite Smuggler in Episode VII

So some big news today from the Star Wars Episode VII rumour-mill… Harrison Ford is set to return as everyone’s favourite loveable rogue Han Solo.

This news comes from the more-often-than-not spot on Latino Review, who ended up on Fox News Latino to break the scoop.

Latino Review have generally been very accurate with their scoops, so I’m inclined to believe this. To be honest, with Mark Hamil and Carrie Fisher already confirmed, I thought it would only be a matter of time before Ford signed on.

The question is, what do you guys think?

Leaked Photo Shows New PS4 Controller

Touch screen, built-in move motion controls, removed start & select buttons… and a possible share button.

These are all new features of Sony’s next-gen console’s controller… or so it would appear.

20130214-220454.jpg

A new leaked photo coming from Destructoid (above) appears to show the controller in the wild, albeit a possible early development build, it still looks pretty legit.

I quite like the design – it’s building off the existing dual shock controller, though a bit wider and chunkier with the glowing strip at the top (what looks like a built-in move receiver).

The touch screen is smaller than I was anticipating though, so I’m wondering what that’ll be used for besides an easily-breakable touch replacement of the start & select buttons.

20130214-222419.jpg

Fellow Geek Pride writer Kanada commented that it “looked like a cassette player”, and that the “D-Pad is a misspress waiting to happen on beat ’em ups”. To be fair, I agree with him on the D-Pad… It reminds me of the Xbox D-Pad (which was terrible for Street Fighter etc), though not quite as bad. I’d like slightly more elevated buttons in an ideal world.

Looking closely at the pad, below the touch screen & PS button… is a seemingly un-marked black button – is this the rumoured “share” button? Consoles have had this before – OnLive had a share button that would post 10 second video clips to Facebook… I feature I really enjoyed.

What I’m not so chuffed by is the built-in move receiver… The new Xbox is rumoured to have built-in Kinect, and now the PS4 is following suit. I know there’s merit in motion-controlled gaming, but I don’t want games to use it as a crutch the way cinema is using 3D… Because I can’t stand 3D!

Anyway here’s a close up of the controller in full… What do you think?

The Originals

Straight to the point: The Vampire Diaries, one of CW network’s biggest success story, has been struggling for a while to keep up the interest of its fans and with the writers having turned the heroes into a bunch of genocidal maniacs, that hasn’t been an easy task. There is however a general consensus on who the new fan favourites are: The Original Vampires.

While initially intended as nothing more than a device to further the plot of the vampire series, the Originals have taken over the show, in more ways than one, a large portion of the fanbase focusing entirely on their adventures. Despite having been signed on only for a few episodes at the start, this affection has saved their “lives” time and time again, keeping them on the show way after their “expiration date.” And now, the Originals have struck again, with a back-door pilot being shot to be aired in April, opening up the show to the possibility of a spin-off featuring none of the main cast of The Vampire Diaries. So far only Daniel Gillies,  who played Elijah Mikaelson, Claire Holt (Rebekah Mikaeson) and Joseph Morgan who plays Klaus Mikaelson, the villainous hybrid tormenting Mystic Falls,  have been signed up for the new show, leaving out one member of the family that has become much beloved among the fans.

Kol-Mikaelson-kol-31197971-200-200

Most recently in The Vampire Diaries, one of the Original brothers – Kol (Nate Buzolic) – has met a brutal death at the hands of the show’s heroine, Elena (Nina Dobrev) the choice of the writers starting a wave of outrage from the fans who have been campaigning for days to have the character resurrected, whether in this show or in The Originals, perhaps Julie Plec, the show’s producer will bend to their will as she was forced to do in the past, due to extensive media campaigns on twitter/facebook and other social media platforms, but until then, let’s focus on some of the other actors confirmed for the new series.

Phoebe_tonkin_1

Australian Phoebe Tonkin, who rose to fame thanks to another CW show, The Secret Circle, has joined the Vampire Diaries cast in season 4 and seemingly she’ll be departing to join the Originals in New Orleans, the setting of the new show. For now this has been the subject of much speculation, given that she had a minor role in the show so far, though her actions had repercussions that haven’t endeared her to the fans.  Another addition to the cast is Charles Michael Davis, who will play Klaus’s ex-protege, someone seemingly as bad as Klaus, if rumours are to be believed, and the unofficial king of New Orleans, though given the value of rumours, I suggest we wait until April 25th to find out.

Until then, the actors love to tease us, most recently Joseph Morgan (Klaus) promising something completely unexpected to be had in the new show, should it get picked up. Fingers crossed on that account, since The Vampire Diaries has recently turned as stale as old bread, with the focus being only on the romantic plot within the ever-present Damon-Elena-Stefan triangle. Let’s hope the show gets a chance, though, despite really enjoying the pretty faces and prettier accents of all the Originals, I’ll refrain from comparing it to Buffy/Angel, mostly because TVD would never amount to what Buffy had been. Thankfully the cast is made out of more than pretty faces, the actors and actresses good at what they do and hopefully that will be enough to put this show on our small screens soon.

AMCs The Walking Dead Midseason Premiere- 8 GPPs

WARNING- HERE THERE BE DRAGONS!! CORRECTION- SPOILERS!!

If you’re reading this review, then odds are that you know the pain of waiting for months on end to see how Daryl and Merle got out of the arena. Given that Daryl’s a key member of the group, it goes without saying that they aren’t in the arena for very long, but by episodes end everybody knows about everybody, so no more secrets for anyone. However, this is still an emotionally trying episode that will have many fans riled up, if you haven’t already seen the episode.

Sorry guys, I’m the only American on the staff here at Geek Pride. I saw it last Sunday, when it aired in North America. If you haven’t already downloaded it, then be courteous to the rest of the audience waiting for it to go on air.

All that being said, we caught a glimpse of what the rest of the season’s going to look like. The Governor has lost his patience, Merle and Daryl are on their own, Glenn and Maggie have hit a rough patch, Tyrone’s group are still on thin ice, and Rick’s made his newly found insanity known to the entire group.

Drama like this is what networks like AMC feed off of for ratings and commercials. They know that by this point, the fans are too invested in these characters to see them in this state without wanting to know how it gets resolved. They see the division of the characters and the drama that it creates, because they’ve done this before. They warmed us up for it last season, with the Rick vs. Shane feud creating factions within the group, resulting in Shane’s death. Which brings me to my next point.

Any fans of the comic know the beauty of the Prison saga, lasting from volume 3 to volume 7. We’re seeing some of the Prison saga, but the interesting part is that there’s a lot of the comics that didn’t make it to the small screen, and here are some examples:

  • T-Dog and his wife were only created for the season 1 finale, so that there was someone to stay behind at the CDC.
  • Shane died at the end of Volume 1 of the comics, getting shot by Carl when he tried to kill Rick for the trauma that Laurie put him through. In the show, Rick stabbed Shane in the chest in the Season 2 finale, with his zombie form getting shot by Carl.

zShane-dies

  • The big reveal about the infection came at the end of Volume 4, when Tyrone’s daughter and her boyfriend make a suicide pact and the boyfriend pusses out at the last minute, getting brutally murdered by Tyrone. At that point, Rick drives back to Atlanta to shoot zombie-Shane in the face.
  • Daryl and Merle were never in the comics, only created to expand the amount of drama. Come on, 4 issues does not equal 13 episodes.
  • Sofia and Dale survived until volume 7.
  • The swarm at the end of season 2 never happened, so Andrea never met up with Michonne. As well, Andrea and Dale were in a relationship by that point. Talk about pillaging the cradle.
  • That frame from Season 2, introducing Michonne, is virtually identical to the frame they used at the end of volume 4.

Michonne_Comic_and_Tv

  • Laurie didn’t have the hunting-knife-cesarian, giving birth to her newborn daughter the old fashioned way, surviving until volume 7.

And those are just some of the differences between the show and the books. Having said that, I can tell you right now that most of the material from volumes 5 and 6 were taken out completely, so the Prison saga has been narrowed down to volumes 4 and 7, with small parts from 5 and 6. Anyone who’s read that far knows the trauma that lays ahead, but what I can say is that the emotional trouble with the midseason premiere is NOTHING compared to the storm that’s coming.

So brace yourself, Junkies. AMC’s doing you a favor by giving you something of a warm up. As the Governor even says, “this is war.”

Xbox 720 Rumoured to have New Controllers & Mandatory Kinect

The rumour mill has been kicked into overdrive regarding the next generation of consoles, what with Sony‘s expected Playstation 4 announcement just 6 days away and information leaks ahoy. Some interesting information has come to light regarding the Xbox 720 codenamed “Durango“.

Xbox 720 Concept

Some of the new tidbits of information include a mandatory Kinect connection for the console to work, along with necessary game installs into the 500gb hard drive, application & game multi-tasking, and a “natural evolution” of the system’s iconic gamepad.

durango_ebayThe information comes to Kotaku from a source known as “SuperDaE“, who’s the guy that gained infamy by trying to sell a Durango development kit on eBay last year. Unsurprisingly the sale was blocked by Microsoft… and, ever defiant, SuperDaE has put a “Durango PC” on eBay now – at the time of writing it’s sitting at $45,100 (AUS) with 41 bids.

Of course, as MS won’t confirm or deny any of the rumours, rumours they stay. Nothing is denied either, and everything is subject to change. However as it’s always fun to gossip, we’ll give you a rundown of what SuperDaE has divulged.

Some of the very brief stuff includes Blu Ray compatibility, and the aforementioned 500gb hard drive. However the game install information is interesting – this can apparently be done on the fly as you play your game of choice – this is possible due to the coding methods of the game. Apparently Durango games can be coded in segments, so when the console runs an install it can do it piece-by-piece rather than make you wait ages before you can get cracking.

The controllers though being a continuation of the same design as the 360 ones (same button layout etc) use a “new wireless technology”… meaning that your Xbox 360 controllers will most likely not be compatible with the new console.

Kinect being mandatory for the console’s use means that you’ll have the hardware shipped with the console as standard. Because of this, it’s expected that the majority of titles will use this hardware option as it will be available to all rather than being a peripheral.

The camera is now more advanced too and apparently “always on” – newly patented technology also indicates that the camera may be able to identify individual users, and change out gamer profiles depending on who’s standing in front of it. The camera also tracks more points of skeletal movement for a more accurate motion control experience.

Another New Xbox Concept

Regarding the new systems’s specifications, there’s been information flying around the internet for a while since the Durango dev kits hit. However the most recent information is getting more and more concrete the closer we get to Microsoft’s “late 2013” release window… so this following information should be pretty accurate.

The next Xbox will have 8gb of DDR RAM with an 8-core (running at 1.6GHz) AMD 64-bit CPU with an 800MHz GPU. The Optical drive will handle 50GB discs, and then there’s that 1/2 terabyte HDD to go with it. The console will also be 3D compatible (if you have a 3D TV, and don’t get mind-numbing headaches using it like I do), and happily the console is brought into the 21st century by having built-in WiFi. So no more having to purchase the costly kit to allow a WiFi connection.

There’s bound to be craploads more information coming out as the days go by – and I’m willing to bet as soon as the semi-official PS4 announcement goes through you might see Microsoft trying to up the ante somewhat, as if reports are anything to go by, Sony’s new baby is a beast in comparison.

What do you think of this new information? Are you more excited for the new Xbox, or new Playstation? Talk to us, dagnammit!

The Raid: Movie Review – 9GPP

raid-redemptionI didn’t know much about this film until a friend of mine expressed to everybody on his social media feed that a relatively unknown film had come to England’s cinemas from Taiwan called ‘Serbuan maut’ (The Raid: Redemption). He claimed it to be one of the greatest action films he had seen.  Because I’m a fan of foreign films, and I don’t mind subtitles, I wished to see it (as I have previously seen some great foreign action films such as ‘Ong Bak’ (Tony Jaa) and ‘Oldboy’ (Choi Min-Sik)). The film was directed by Welshman ‘Gareth Evans’ from Hirwaun, now living in Indonesia. After doing a documentary about martial art style ‘pencak silat’, he met The Raid’s lead actor ‘Iko Uwais’. Uwais was working as a deliveryman for a phone company before being ‘discovered’ by Evans who made him the star of the movie ‘Merantau’, which when released in 2009 became a cult hit.

raid312012

The premise to this film is blindingly simple. A SWAT team is sent out to bring down a drug kingpin who is holed up in a thirty floor apartment block.  The main character ‘Rama’ (played by Iko Uwais) is an expectant father and part of the 20-man SWAT team led by Sergeant Jaka and Lieutenant Wahyu. After making it inside the building, the team begin to climb the floors making good, quiet progress throughout the floors, non-violently taking down suspected criminals on the way. This doesn’t last long  (these things never do).  A young child steps out and sees the team making their way down a corridor and springs the alarm before being killed. The block goes into lockdown and every occupant indebted to the drug lord are now hunting down the team.  After this moment, we see some of the greatest hand-to-hand combat since Jaa himself.

theraidredemption

Now, as with most action films, the storyline in and of itself is lacking – but it stays within the realm of the possible, and it’s shot in such a way that it has a claustrophobic feel to it, which merely adds to the overall feeling of the film. If you are a martial-arts film lover, then you owe it to yourself to go and see this film.  And a lot of credit must go to the director Gareth Evans, who is not only the director, but the main writer for this action packed film.

Word has it that Evans and Iko are already working on a third movie, tentatively titled as ‘Berandal’ (Thugs), which is said to be a sequel to this film.  It looks likely to be called ‘The Raid: Retaliation’ for the American market, and due to the original films success, will be granted a significantly larger budget. Filming is marked for January 2013, and includes around 100 days of physical production.
