Project Awakened – A Create Your Own Superhero Kickstarter Project

0

Project Awakened

The Project

Do you enjoy superhero games but want to be able to create your own hero? Well, you may be able to soon, if currently titled “Project Awakened” goes ahead. Developers Phosphor Games are running a Kickstarter fund on this project to make a product for gamers, funded by gamers. Here is the video from the Kickstarter page, where you can see some early footage and hear what the team are planning for it:

Customisation

Customisable superheroes are nothing new as games such as City of Heroes (which is actually an inspiration for Project Awakened) and DC Universe Online have already featured these; however, the characters in those games have always followed a particular class and  use skill trees, whereas Project Awakened will feature an a-la-carte system, which will allow players to create a unique superhero, exactly how they want them. Characters will able to use blades, guns, fists, hover-packs and much more, although a full-flying  ability is not mentioned (it wouldn’t be much of a loss though, as it never really works that well in my experience). A video showcasing the character creation system can be viewed here.

Game-Play

From the game-play footage shown in the videos, it appears it will be an action title and is quite reminiscent of games like Infamous and Prototype, where leaving mass destruction in your wake (all in the name of good of course) is a big part of the game, which is always guaranteed to be fun. It’s good to see that this isn’t just another attempt at a Superhero MMO-RPG. The developers say the the multi-player mode will include customisable scenarios and the game will be open to player-created mods, giving much more possibilities to the experience.

Have Your Say

The expected release date isn’t until August 2014 but a closed beta version is planned pre-release, open to certain backers (depending on how much they donate to the project). It seems that they are really keen to hear  players’  feedback and ideas, which is refreshing as most big game companies just seem to use beta versions of their products to get some free testing, especially as the end product almost always appears to be the same, just with fewer bugs.

How You Can Support Project Awakened

This will be a great opportunity to see a brand new IP from a team, who care about what you want in a game and not some large, greedy company; who often relies on existing brand names to guarantee sales alone, usually resulting in an end-product which feels unfinished and generally shoddy or simply not much different to the last game in the series. So if you want to back this and view some more details of the project and the rewards involved, then check this link here: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1312036782/project-awakened?ref=live

However, if you want to support this project without using your wallet, if you go to the Steam Store, you can simply click a box saying that it’s something you might buy when it’s finished and that will also help: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=126109020&searchtext=project+awakened

Dust and Sand – Chapter 32 – By Sean P. Wallace

Chapter 32

Eleanor Naismith was almost giddy as she rode through the Badlands. Her horse, the pathetic beast that it was, trotted gently beneath her. She kept it at a gentle pace to avoid aggravating parts of her left tender by the Wastrels’ orgy; she had to hand it to the followers of That Which Sins, they knew how to throw a party.

It was such a shame that she had to leave early. That Faustian would be bathing in the blood of the Wanted Man by now and would have his newest Vessel to boot. They’d lost a few Vessels, sure, and all their cultists but with the boost provided by whatever he had planned for Resistance’s lackey it’d only be a matter of time before he tried to make an Avatar.

And, well… that was when the real fun would start.

She laughed to herself, a high bark that echoed. It had all been so easy. That was what excited her most. That obese whore Mahrey had been bought cheaply with orgies and spells that looked almost like what she’d wanted The Faustian had had no choice about the matter, needing his blubbery masthead. And Dust, oh Dust… convincing him she was just a spoilt brat, showing her underbelly in a way that weakened him and got him captured… that had been the most fun she’d had in a long, long time.

The last two days hadn’t been so much a mission as a vacation, a wonderful dalliance in the lives of those who thought they were more powerful and smarter then her. That she could enjoy her service so much was proof that Omnis loved her.

Her only annoyance, her only concern, was Shadows Fade. She’d tried to get Dust to ignore the bitch but he’d insisted on bringing her along. The Faustian had understood she was a threat and taken her out first… but somehow she’d survived, whether through a regeneration spell or some secret Indian ritual. She could be the only thorn in their plan, the only grit in the mechanisms.

“Fucking Indians,” she said, her joy all but gone. Of all the Triangle, Omnis had the greatest enmity towards the natives of this land; Omnis was the god of magic and knowledge, the Seeker of Hidden Truths, and the Indians kept the most powerful rituals of this world to themselves. As far as Eleanor knew, any and all attempts to get them to spill their secrets had failed.

Well, after tonight, Resistance would have less influence over the world. The Indians would be weakened and some would naturally turn to Omnis instead. Eleanor smiled again, remembering how she’d pretended she’d not heard of the fourth god when Dust spoke about him. It’d been so much fun and oh so simple.

Her Bite, her personal familiar, found her smiling as she rode away from Crucifix. It circled overhead, a black ball of fur with bat-like wings, and emitted a rapid succession of staccato notes that sounded deliciously alien.

Eleanor recognised the cry and looked up. Why had it returned? Usually Bites waited twenty-four hours before delivering their payload and she had only summoned it that morning, when she’d left camp to urinate. It had been a risk, casting a spell with Dust busy making breakfast, but she’d gotten away with it.

Frowning, she drew her rifle and beckoned the Bite down with a sharp whistle. It chirped then swooped down. As expected, another creature went for the familiar; being small and weak, it was a natural target for the Badlands’ predators. The opportunist was a Paint, perhaps a straggler from the herd she and Dust had destroyed. Eleanor put a shot through its swirling form before it got its… self on her familiar.

Grateful, the Bite settled on her arm and clicked like a noisemaker. She stroked it idly. It often begged for attention and her mood was so bright she was glad to indulge it.

Bites were information gatherers, creatures that lived on and for knowledge. Their great power came in their stealth; they flew high above the world and used so little magic that not even the Wanted Man could detect them. Omnis used them extensively, gave them complex instructions, but this one had been set a simple task; monitor the Wanted Man, learn everything about him.

Satisfied with being fussed, the Bite opened a great mouth which spread right across its spherical torso, revealing an array of shark’s teeth and a gross tongue curled like a spool of thread. This tongue unfurled. Data secreted from its pink flesh and coalesced, becoming thick honey that slowly shifted clockwise around a central mass. There was a great deal of it, more than she’d ever seen gathered by the creature. Perhaps it had returned because it was full?

To find out, she put her finger into this gooey knowledge. It was cold to the touch. Numbers, facts and statistics flooded her vision. The Bite had learned much about Dust; height, weight, relative strength, surges of magic and the levels they’d reached and even the average time it took for his wounds to heal, rated by severity. It would be very interesting to analyse later.

A Mother Geek’s Rant: “Where are the girls hero tops mummy?”

0
girl hero tops
Look at that face, so sad.

My children have had no choice but to grow up geek; the people they spend the most time with outside of school are all grown up geeks eager to impart their knowledge on the next generation. It is inevitable that my children will embrace the likes of those they look up to.

This Christmas, just gone, the second item on my 9 year old daughters  list was a Batman logo hoodie, I cannot express to you how proud that made me feel.  She is growing up in a household where it is encouraged to have diverse interests and not to be restricted by societies view of gender roles. If she wanted to play with cars then so be it, she is a huge fan of Doctor Who, The Justice league MineCraft and many other typically viewed male interests. She currently also wants to be a game designer when she grows up.  I count all this as a big tick for our parenting skills. However, today my heart was broken a little and my soul enraged.

Arriving at ASDA my two children, Xander (5) , Maddie (9) and I were confronted by an outstanding display of super hero themed clothes, hoodies, t-shirts, dressing up outfits. Both children immediately flocked to them rifling through. Then Maddie turned around to me and said “Where are the girls hero tops?” and she was right. Everything displayed was labelled boys, there were no Black Widow or Supergirl or Wonder Woman dressing up outfits; no Batman girls tops, not even the very commercially successful Avengers line had anything for girls. I would like to point out that this phenomenon is not solely a problem with ASDA, the same issue can be found in many of the major retailers of clothes.

I have begun to notice that women’s geek themed clothing is becoming a little more ‘available’ and by that I mean that on occasion I can walk into one of the big supermarket chains and by a Wonder Woman t-shirt. That said they are still not as available as I would like and I do still have to buy men’s which is fine I guess, but they aren’t quite cut right and therefore not as flattering as they should be.   Nonetheless retailers are getting there. But what I think they are over looking in a very sexist way is the need for girls superhero/geek clothing to be available. Why are only little boys allowed to enjoy the adventures of superheroes? Why can Maddie not show her support for the Rebel Alliance? Why is she stuck with Hello Kitty and puppies? Why are there no Hello Kitty boys clothes? Do you see why I am mad?

I will admit that online I can find things more easily, if I am willing to pay the extortionate prices and delivery costs. But why should I have to; shouldn’t it be as easy for me to walk into a supermarket clothing section and pick up a girls Batman tee as easy as it is for me to walk in and do the same for my son? Am I the only person who thinks this is wrong?

Whilst I hope things have changed I suspect that both my children will have a hard time when it comes to high school. Children can be cruel especially if you appear to be outside of the ‘norm’ as people call it. I fear this will be doubly so for my daughter, girl geeks haven’t had the easiest time being accepted by their male counterparts. I have and will continue to reassure her that what the people think of you at school doesn’t matter, it is a relatively short experience in a hopefully long life.  But when retailers, toy makers  etc are reinforcing the stereotypes we fight hard to break, I have to battle, not only the few small minded people she will come across at school, but also societies point of view. No matter how hard this is I will continue to reassure her that what she enjoys, loves and idolises can be whatever she wants and it is everyone else who is wrong if they tell her otherwise.

So retailers and manufacturers take a hint, cater for both girls and boys equally when it comes to the likes of superheroes, Transformers, Star Wars, Hello Kitty etc You have a whole generation of children being brought up by geeks like me and you are missing out on our money but more importantly you are reinforcing stereotypes. Surely you don’t want my answer to the title question to be “I dunno sweetie, the company must be sexist, but don’t worry they are wrong and you are right” because that is exactly what I had to say today.

Dale-Con: Rochdale’s Only Sci-Fi Convention

0

If your calendar’s anything like mine, you’ll know how much the geek convention scene has exploded over the last few years. With Comic-Cons, Anime-Cons, Sci-Fi Cons and even Lego-Cons every other weekend  it can all start to look a little same-old, same-old. If you fancy something new, different and definitely original, make your way down to the Wheatsheaf Centre in Rochdale this Friday 22nd to  Saturday 23rd for Dale-Con: Rochdale’s Only Sci-Fi Convention.

Picture1

Entry to this two-day event is free and will host such special guests as Craig Charles (Red Dwarf, Robot Wars), Pam Rose (Star Wars, Space:1999), Alan Flyng, (The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi), Stephanie English (The Empire Strikes Back, Stardust) Ken Coombs (Return of the Jedi, Superman IV), Brian Wheeler (Return of the Jedi, The Never Ending Story), Paul Markham (Return of the Jedi, Minder) and Richard LeParmentier (Star Wars), all of whom will be answering questions and signing autographs at points throughout the day (for a charge of course, the life of a celebrity doesn’t come cheap!).

As well as the guest stars, Dale-Con will also be hosting best costume competitions on both days, so get ironing those jedi robes! They will also be judging a Design a Sci-Fi Character competition with entries from over 21,000 school children from across the area, all vying for the top prize of £250 worth of science equipment for their school, and vouchers for themselves. The two winners of this competition will also have the honour of having their creations brought to life on Saturday by illustrator Joe Matthews. Younglings (and more than likely one or two grown-ups) will also be catered for in the Kreative Korner where they will be able to enjoy arts and crafts such as colouring and making their own dalek to keep!

Along with the usual stormtroopers, ghostbusters, tardises (tardii?), protocol droids, cybermen, sith lords and more props and memorabilia than you can shake a lightsaber at, this is shaping up to be, if not the biggest convention this year, certainly the one with the most heart. The Force is strong with this one…

The Wheatsheaf Shopping Centre, Baillie Street, Rochdale, OL16 1JZ. 11am – 4pm Friday 22nd & Saturday 23rd February.

Rooker/Reedus or how to get the world to like you when your character’s an ass

0

Rooker_-_Reedus Nearly three years ago AMC has decided to bring to our screens what has now become their biggest hit, The Walking Dead. Based on a comic book, the show revolves around the tale of a group of survivors, struggling for their lives in a post-apocalyptic world that bears little resemblance to the world we’ve grown used to use and abuse. While the comic has been successful, the show’s own fame has been quite a little unexpected, but with a gifted cast that counts: Andrew Lincoln (Rick Grimes), Laurie Holden (Andrea), Melissa McBride (Carol) and the aforementioned Michael Rooker (Merle Dixon) and Norman Reedus (Daryl Dixon) that is hardly surprising.

Which brings us back to Michael Rooker and Norman Reedus, two actors that have ended up playing characters that are completely wild cards, with no connection to the comic books.  Both of them started the show like foul-mouthed, racists, a couple of rednecks thrown in the middle of a camp that seemed to be overflowing with civilized individuals. Emphasis on seemed. Even I found myself surprised with how much of a contrast these two seemed to make with those that were still desperately clinging to their old ways, to their own lives, while the Dixon’s seemingly had embraced the savagery of the new world, almost revelling in its violence. So how did they become the fan favourites? The ones saved time and time again by large campaigns to keep them on?

Exhibit A.  Both Michael Rooker and Norman Reedus came to the show with huge fan bases, but since that’s not enough to keep someone’s attention, I give you: Character development.

More visible for Norman Reedus’s character, this particular piece of evidence has had fans threaten with a riot should something happened to Daryl before his story is completely finished.  (The riot might happen regardless if his character meets what will undoubtedly be seen as an untimely demise). From being nothing but a squirrel eating wild man, considered almost illiterate and dumb by a group he’d saved countless times, he went to becoming Rick Grimes’s right hand man, replacing Shane (Jon Bernthal). In a more graphic display of this exhibit, let’s say he went from  eating raw meat and wearing walker ears as a necklace to holding babies.

Daryl-Dixon-holding-baby-on-The-Walking-Dead

Little pieces were added to the character, small gestures, a flinch here, a soft word whispered there and the fandom of the show was swayed into loving the man that has slowly taken the place of some of the most beloved characters in the comic books in people’s hearts.

Merle was a bit of a tougher cookie, here we have a man that treated women like his own private property, demeaning them, showing off his racist tendencies like they were going out of fashion (given the fact that the human population had vastly dropped, it might have been true) so how do you make a character like that better? How do you fix things in order to get fans to stop looking at him like something that should be stomped on or used as walker bait?

merle-dixon

Step 1. Get Michael Rooker to play him.

Step 2. Have said character tied up on a roof in the heat and make him hallucinate.

Step 3. Make sure he’s related to Daryl Dixon who will give you a glimpse into their relationship, making you feel sorry for the both of them.

Step 4. Make sure he’s no longer hopped up on drugs when he makes his next appearance on the show.

Don’t misunderstand me, no one “loves” Merle for who he is, he’s still an ass in the face of most fans, but the slight nuances we get to see in his character’s cold, emotionless mask are enough to give people hope that maybe, just maybe there might be something more to him than meets the eye. He’s not black and white, he’s not just good or purely evil, he’s like most people that live among us, maybe with a slightly looser tongue, saying what he thinks without a filter. And we hate him for that, but we also love him for that.

While the writers might put on paper what goes into the show, what’s being said, by whom or when, it’s the actors that bring them to life, it’s their own report with the character they play that makes a difference and boy, does Rooker make all the difference?

Exhibit B These two haven’t been on screen together enough for us to really know much about them or their relationship, neither Daryl nor Merle the type to go around giving their life story around a camp fire or writing long winded diary entries that would be mistakenly found, revealing their deepest, darkest secrets, but even apart they each showed genuine care for one another. While even bad guys love their mothers is a nice trope (I suppose it applies to sibling relationships to), it was precisely this affection that has granted us access to what makes them tick, separately and in relation to one another. Their scenes together show us how much they grew when apart, from the concussion induced dream  in which Daryl was being chastised and mocked by Merle’s hallucination to Daryl standing up for himself in front of his brother, standing up for doing the right thing, rather than take the man’s word as gospel as it had happened before.

Daryl-Merle

And in comes last night’s episode of The Walking Dead that has sent fans into turmoil over the Daryl/Merle dynamic. During “Home”, the most recent Walking Dead episode, we caught a glimpse of what life at casa Dixon was like, we learn about the feelings of abandonment that Daryl has suffered, that he would stay by his brother’s side forever and that for once he expects Merle to return them. While Merle of yester-season would’ve walked away, expecting his little brother to follow without a word, for once he finds himself giving in, allowing something more important than his ego to take precedence, the bond he wants to have with his brother, a bond that recent events seemed to have damaged. Best part of it all? If you watch the episode you will see that none of this is explicitly stated, it’s all implied by vague words and simple gestures.

And Michael Rooker, if you ever end up reading this thing, and get this far down, you were amazing. Without a doubt, this was his best episode yet, the way his face melts from anger to confusion and pain at seeing his brother’s scars, the proof of his failure as a protector when he had been needed the most, deserves all of the awards. You could almost feel the man’s horror, a man who had no trouble with beating up someone defenceless, with allowing babies to be snacked on by walkers, suddenly brought to his knees by the sight of scar tissue on his baby brother’s back. Given the fan reaction he has succeeded in becoming even more loved by his fans, his acting skills undoubtedly among the best of the show. The fact that Norman Reedus brought his own skills to the table, making for one of the best dramatic scenes in the show so far isn’t something to be ignore either, they played off one another so good that I am pretty sure I heard the claps of the millions of people watching all the way from here.

rooker face

Conclusions:

If you want to bring an arsehole of a character that was supposed to last only three episodes into the heart of fans, find someone able to act, willing to go the extra mile and don’t forget to give him something to work with – that might just be the most important thing here.

And don’t forget that there are too many shows out there who use abuse as a device of making the less likely to end up loved characters become suddenly sympathetic. There are however very few shows that know how to use that particular thing with effectiveness. The Walking Dead isn’t even focusing on that angle, relying instead on the acting chops of the two in order to get people to want to know more, giving them the material to work with in order to make everyone happy. They don’t serve you everything up on a silver platter, like you’re nothing but a recipient of what they want you to know, you get to figure things out for yourself, make up your own conclusions about who or what these two are and isn’t that what makes for great television? In order to catch a glimpse of who they really are under the dirt and the foul language, under the anger that’s so overpowering with each of them whenever things don’t go their way, we had to wait, we had to hope and we had to give them the slightest benefit of a doubt. I’m not disappointed. Are you?

The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia – 9GPPs

0

Straight to the Point: The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia is a must have piece of memorabilia for any collector. Bursting with information and beautiful concept art, this truly is where the legend begins.

hyrule

Little over a year after its release in Japan to celebrate the series’ 25th anniversary, The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia has finally been made its way to our shores in a translated and quite simply stunning hardback edition. Eiji Aonuma, and co.’s beautiful collection of chronology, concept art and history of our favourite little Hylian protagonist is a must have for any true fan of the series.

On its UK release earlier this month, the Hyrule Historia managed to top Amazon’s Bestseller’s list and sold out from most major retailers in the first few days. Unfortunately for those fans who missed out when it was first released, its popularity means that the book has shot up from an average retail price of around £17.99 to £40+ on stores like Amazon and Play.com. That said, with over 200 pages of previously unseen content and an original 32-page comic from leading Zelda manga creators Akira Himekawa, it’s worth every penny.

25th Anniversary Artwork

It’s difficult to review the Hyrule Historia without descending into pure fan-girl gushing of ‘oh my days it’s so frickin’ awesome’ and rambling on for hours. So, I’ll try my very hardest, but seriously, it’s pretty darn swish. The main focus of the collection is ‘Creative Footprints’ which documents 25 years of beautiful concept art, as well as exploring the chronology and history of Hyrule and the actual games catalogue. ‘The History of Hyrule: A Chronology’ is particularly interesting and does a good job of explaining the timeline, although still leaving a few inconsistencies which the book doesn’t try to hide.

The book is loaded with magnificent examples of artwork and character development, and it’s a great bonus to have translated notes alongside some early sketches. The presentation of the entire book is superb; the front cover alone had me staring at and stroking it for a good while before I even opened it up.  The written commentary from developers such as Eiji Aonuma and Shigeru Miyamoto is a great feature and it’s interesting to see how much character designs have changed and why.

Sneak Peek at Link’s Character Development

I’m a huge fan of The Legend of Zelda series, which is rather evident through my love for Link cosplay, handmade Hylian shield and life meter tattoo on my wrist. This means that it’s quite difficult to say anything negative about the Hyrule Historia. Especially after each page I turned was met with an awe-stricken look on my face and plenty of ‘oohs’ and ‘ahhs’. However, when reading the book I was a little disappointed that so much attention was given to the most recent release, Skyward Sword, the only game in the series that I am yet to play (due to my level of pure hatred for the Wii).

The original version of the book was released for the 25th anniversary of the Zelda series in Japan, around the same time as Skyward Sword. This means that almost a quarter of the book focuses on ‘The World of Skyward Sword’, with over sixty pages dedicated to the instalment in comparison to the few pages given to earlier games such as my all time favourite, Ocarina of Time. Saying that, the section does make me want to give the game a go. After all, Zelda is the only reason for anyone to buy a Wii anyway.

Old School Link
Old School Link

One of the things that I enjoyed most about the Hyrule Historia was the parting words from series director, design and producer Eiji Aonuma who also edited the original version of the book. Aonuma’s description of coming up with a new instalment in there series is that of a man who is truly passionate about what he’s creating. He describes the experience as ‘setting out on a voyage across the ocean in the distant past’ and ‘similar to seeking a new continent that no one on Earth has visited before’. This metaphor goes on for a good few paragraphs; from sea charts and shipwrecks to discovering a new world.

The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia is a definite must have for any collector or fan of the series. At the moment it’s quite pricey, but it really is such a huge book that’s bursting with information and stunning visuals. Whilst most of the focus is on newer instalments in the series and a huge amount of artwork rather than honouring older and more nostalgic titles, the Hyrule Historia most definitely has pride of place in my collection. It really is a great little treasure that we should thank Dark Horse for finally bringing over here, and no, you’re not touching it.

Boba Fett Speculation, Part 1

There’s been a lot of speculation about the cast for the upcoming Star Wars movies, and I just recently discussed it with a friend of mine. He said that the best candidate for the upcoming Boba Fett feature was Jason Statham, but I disagreed. Traditionally, Star Wars has never been about big names, so a B-list actor would be better suited. Say, Timothy Olyphant.

boba_fett

Then, it hit me – he’s perfect. Anyone who’s seen Justified knows the all-American badass of Deputy Marshall Raylan Givens. Had Raylan grown up anywhere but the crime infested trailer park that is Harland County, Kentucky, he would have been the perfect parallel for Boba. But, that being said, here’s a point-by-point as for why Raylan prepared him perfectly for Boba.

  1. They both hunt people. Rayland works for the US Marshall’s Service. Their sole purpose is to track down fugitives. Boba  is a bounty hunter, working anyone who’ll foot the bill, be they Imperial or crime lord.
  2. The law is a matter of convenience. Rayland will disregard the law when it suits him, bringing a coworker’s comparison of him to Wild West gunslinger Wyatt Earp. Boba caters primarily to crime lords, so the law is more than a little fuzzy. You could call him a deep space gunslinger.
  3. t9bmmaThese are the kinds of guys you want on your team when shit hits the fan. Raylan has never lost a fight in his law enforcement career, and Boba’s death was accidental at best.
  4. They both have hardcore daddy issues. Raylan personally oversaw his father’s incarceration, with no love lost in the process. Boba watched his father get his head cut off by some jackass Jedi.

Said friend has yet to bring his points for Statham, but I’ll get back to you when he does. Until then, enjoy, junkies!

Doctor Who Quick Read a Quick Let Down – 5GPPs

0

Straight to the point: The Doctor Who “quick reads,” produced by the BBC, I thought was going to be the best value for money I have ever come across. Written by many different authors and for only a pound you get to read an original adventure featuring the Doctor, but the question remains: does it stand up to par with what I know and love of Doctor Who?

“The Silurian Gift” written by Mike Tucker, is a quick read I picked up from Amazon on a whim. Published in 2013, the story depicts a one of a kind spin off from the show featuring my favourite Doctor, Mr Eleven; I got excited. Hey, it was only a pound, why not? Well, let me inform you darling Whovians why not.

When I first got the book in the mail, a sense of suspense ran through my body. The cover  promised what the story didn’t achieve.

The storyline goes: the Doctor ends up at a site in the coldest part of the world, where a scientist has discovered what he terms, “Fire Ice” which will revolutionise the way the world will use fuels from now on. As we go on, we find that he didn’t actually discover this material but it was a gift from the ancient original inhabitants of Earth, the Silurians.

who-silurian

Mr Pelham, the “genius” scientist however has a darker motive. He is holding the Silurians hostage, using them to gain more and more Fire Ice for riches, however, one has got away from his evil clutches. Now free from him, this little Silurian turns to hatred for not only Mr Pelham, but the human race as a whole and seeks revenge. Can the Doctor stop both the little Silurian and Mr Pelham before the entire world is destroyed?

Yes, of course he can, he’s the Doctor. While the storyline is strong, the execution leaves a lot to be desired. The writing style seemed to be lacking the maturity and skill that I enjoy in a book. It could almost be described as a fanfiction; this is the air and feel that emanates from the pages.

power-of-three-promo-pics-11

Reading through I found at parts I was struggling to pay attention, and that is one thing that any type of media should avoid like the bubonic plague. Although I will take this time to admit that there were parts, not many, but there were a couple, that made me chuckle as the Doctor’s personality shone through and in my mind’s eye, saw him act it out as he would on the TV.

However, I think that’s the thing. I am a huge fan of the TV series, and I would watch those episodes over and over again until the TV was hoarse with shouting “Don’t blink!” but the translation to book leaves a lot to be desired from this particular author.

It may be because of the writing style of the author, or the disjointedness of the story from the main show. I think it is both and neither of these, with one extra element here. On TV, you can really understand the workings of a complicated mind, as you get to not only hear but see the expressions, the reactions, the sheer epic-ness that is the Doctor Who series at this time.

All in all, an ok read. It still holds some of the charm and sophistication that Matt Smith brings to the screen but the execution is somewhat poor. I mildly enjoyed the book, but boy did I struggle to finish such a short story.

Doctor Who 50th Special Set to Stun

The-Eleven-Doctors-doctor-who-18277364-1280-800

Ear plugs at the ready non Whovians. In line with Doctor Who celebrating its 50th year, Moffat and the team are looking to bring ALL the Time Lords back together for a one off show spectacular! Yes, this includes the sadly departed William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee. How, you say? No, there isn’t a mad scientist experiment in the works to create a ZomDoctor.

Sifting through the internet back water I came across an article written on the 15th February 2013 on www.mirror.co.uk depicting a large picture of my favourite trio, the Doctor and the Ponds. Above said picture the title read “Who’s who of Doctor Who: BBC to reunite ALL former Time Lords for 50th anniversary special”.

doctors

I screamed, I squealed, I got all excited by this prospect. I read on eagerly. The article goes on to say “Seven of the surviving actors are set to return in cameo roles on the 3D episode to mark the 50th anniversary of the sci-fi favourite. And chiefs also want to involve the first three Doctors – William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee – who have died since the first episode screened back in 1963. They would be included in the feature-length special using computer generated images and old footage”.

Whilst I am a cynic when it comes to the media, and I don’t 100% trust what the internet says, I can’t help but almost pop with delight. However, the article also intimates that this will be the time where we say goodbye to our beloved Eleventh Doctor. In a previous article I was sad to hear the rumour that Matt Smith would be leaving the series, and strongly denied all knowledge of this fact.

Now, it seems we have a time and a place, and I believe that the bubble of denial has been most inadvertently popped. So, thrilling and chilling all at the same time; get your hankies at the ready and your councillor on speed dial, because this magnificent episode (still in production), will be a rollercoaster of emotions, and all in the most wonderful of dimensions, the third.
