Alien vs Predator: Evolution Hits iOS & Android

Game over man, game over! Well… for the humans anyway. H.R Giger‘s mass-murdering xenomorph has now set it’s eyeless sights on Android and iOS… and the “Ugly motherfucker” aka The Predator is following suit, in the new title from Fox Digital – Alien vs Predator: Evolution.

Yes, folks there’s another new game out with it’s feet based in the Alien universe… but this time it’s using the hugely popular Alien vs Predator comicbook world which has spawned a couple of admittedly lacklustre movies. Happily the games have always been alright (although the first Alien vs Predator game on the PC from back in 1999 is still the best of the bunch).

Developer Angry Mob Games are the ones responsible for bringing the game to your mobile devices, though judging by the trailer it doesn’t look too bad (it’s not available in the Play Store in the UK at the time of writing, so I can’t check it out for myself).

In the game you can take the form of a Facehugger or a “Youngblood”, and as you progress you evolve into a fully-fledged alien killing machine, or a Predator warrior. As an Alien, once grown you’ll have your claws, tail, and protruding mouth-thingy as your primary weapons… and the Predator has access to his collection of technological toys to play with.

You’ll slaughter your way through hordes of marines, but also fight your opposing alien species too. Either way whichever creature you decide to go for, you’ll be able to upgrade their attack abilities and weaponry – each species having it’s own unique traits. Just as an example – Aliens will be able to call Facehuggers to their aid, whereas Predators will have access to proximity mines and net guns etc.

Check out the trailer below:

Should you decide to grab this from your respective app store/play store, it’ll set you back $4.99 at the moment. As soon as it becomes available in the UK, I’ll be getting hold of it, and posting a review. Lets just hope it’s better than the reportedly abysmal Aliens: Colonial Marines. *crosses fingers*

Ubisoft Confirms Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag

After some supposed Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag images leaked the other day, there’s been speculation as to it’s validity… I personally thought it was fake, as we haven’t had a new AC game with a subtitle – only a continuation of the story a-la Brotherhood & Revelations. However it would appear that I was incorrect.

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag Box Art

Ubisoft has been forced to confirm ACIV: Black Flag ahead of the full reveal next week, and the above box art has been thrown in for extra authenticity (which is pretty standard fare, and identical for all platforms). I chose to post the Playstation 3 art purely for the interesting PS3 exclusive extra 60 minutes of gameplay part – this has been fairly standard too, what with AC Revelations including the original Assassin’s Creed in with it, and AC3 including exclusive content too.

As Hani advised in her article, it seems that Ubisoft made good on their “beta test” of the naval levels in Assassin’s Creed 3, and are looking to expand that gameplay element into the next game.

It’s already been confirmed that there will be a new protagonist, and if you take liberties and speculate by looking at the artwork, it looks as though there’ll be a bit more gunplay incorporated into the combat system.

AC: Japan Concept ArtStill… I’m kind of annoyed really – was it only me that was hoping and praying for a feudal Japan-era game complete with Samurai, Shogun & Ninja? Like this nice concept on the right…? (Forgive me, I was unable to track down the artist).

Anyway the official box art was available for the PS3, Xbox 360, PC and Wii U… no sign of a PS4 version on the horizon for the foreseeable future then. But, we’ll have more information available to us regarding the title on Monday, so make sure you come back to check it out!

Free Content on the PlayStation Store Today – Uncharted 3 Multiplayer and ME3 DLC

0

Some good news for PlayStation 3 owners today; Uncharted 3 Mulitplayer and Mass Effect 3: Reckoning multiplayer pack will be available to download for free later this afternoon.

Uncharted 3 – Sony are releasing the multiplayer and single player sections of the game separately; the excellent multiplayer mode being free-to-play. Before you get too excited though, you will only be able level your character up to lvl 15 and it seems that there will also be a restriction to which MP modes will be accessible. However,  there will an option  to buy an unlock for these restrictions, if you want to access all of the content which is gained by levelling up and for the co-op modes. It’s also a good opportunity to have a butchers at the game before deciding whether to buy the full version on disc or not, which could possibly be a cheaper option if you want full access to all modes.

Mass Effect 3: Reckoning – Owners of ME3 will be treated to yet another free multiplayer pack, called Reckoning; adding more characters/classes, including collectors, plus new weapons to expand the co-op multiplayer experience even more. Apparently, this is the final free MP DLC pack for the game and is also available on Xbox 360.

Happy gaming!

Talisman: Digital Version

Good news for fans of Game Workshop’s classic board game, Talisman; a digital version is due to be released this summer. Developers Nomad say the game will use the 4th Revised Edition rules, include a multiplayer mode for 2-4 players and AI opponents will also be available for those playing solo. The board game also had expansion sets available and these are also planned for the digital version, to be available post-release.

Here’s a trailer for the digital version:

http://youtu.be/czYBeOAnQSc

This isn’t actually a Kickstarter project but Nomad still needs your support; mainly to get it on Steam. Simply follow the link to the Greenlight page below and select “yes” in response to the question: “Would you buy this game if it were available on Steam?” It’s as easy as that.

They also have a Kickstarter-style pre-ordering system of the full digital version and if you can’t wait until the summer for that, then you can already buy the prologue game, which is a single-player only version; there’s also a demo for it, if you want to try it first. For these and more details on the game, just follow link below.

Community – 9GPPs

0

When October 19th 2012 came and passed, fans of Community gave a deep sigh. Their favourite quirky television comedy had been set back which meant there would be no Christmas special, no Troy and Abed on the TV and no crazy Greendale happenings. Fortunately, 7th February 2013 brought season 4 of Community and the fans were happy again.

If you’ve never heard of Community, I personally recommend it which means this review is probably biased. After hearing about it while studying in Canada I thought, why not, what’s the worst it can do – except end on a cliffhanger and never return, I’m talking to you Heroes. Community, which just started its fourth season, centers around a study group at Greendale Community college. I know, I know, sounds boring and cliched and not funny at all. That’s where it gets exciting. The episodes are littered with cultural references – the Breakfast Club, Star Wars, Doctor Who – and my favourite pairing of Troy and Abed offer up so much weirdness that it makes you feel normal. There have been episodes about blanket forts, pillow forts, at least two episodes about paintballing, a World of Warcraft episode, a Law and Order episode, a video game episode…

I’m getting excited about it all over again.

community1

It’s true, now and then you get an episode which isn’t as funny as the rest but don’t you get that with every television show? Community offers something fresh, quirky, geeky and plain fun. With a diverse group including a possible Aspergers sufferer, a failed lawyer, an overachiever who once has a painkiller addiction, an ex-jock and a Dean who loves to dress up, the only thing missing is you watching it.

The big difference between season 3 and season 4 was that the show’s creator Dan Harmon was fired, losing his position as showrunner and executive producer. Initially there were reports that Harmon would return as a consultant but Harmon has stated that he is no longer involved in the creation of the show. This worried fans, would it still be geeky and creative without being too weird? Well, the new season has just passed episode 3. Episode 1 worried me, it seemed like it was trying too hard but episode 3, which also featured Matt Lucas, calmed me down and made me have a little more faith. I’m still curious to see where this season will go. Will the show be able to survive without Dan Harmon’s genius? I’m not sure. Will I be staying tuned to find out? Definitely.

Even if season 4 lets me down, the first 3 seasons have enough laughs in them to keep me going. I usually find it hard to re-watch episodes of a TV show but Community remains fresh and as funny as the first time you watched it.

Avast ye! Assassin’s Creed IV Leak?

0

Earlier today, gaming website Kotaku claimed to have received marketing material from a ‘tipster’ for the upcoming Assassin’s Creed instalment which was only announced earlier this month. Ubisoft already announced a change in character and time period for the series, but now it seems that the precise details are already being leaked. According to Kotaku, the game will be called Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag and centre around a pirate theme. The website claims to have been sent a poster, which is apparently promotional material that will appear in stores next month.

I’m not hugely convinced by the poster and think it’s most likely a fake, however I do think that a pirate theme for the new game is a possibility. There have been other rumours circulating the internet as well, including a leaked screenshot which doesn’t really give anything away, along with claims on Reddit that someone read the title Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flags on a powerpoint presentation on someone’s laptop on a plane.

Leaked screenshot?

According to the rumours, the game will be set in the Caribbean and follow Edward Kenway, father of Haytham Kenway from Assassin’s Creed III. Whilst I’m not very convinced by the ‘leaked poster’ and screenshot, I do think that the rumours of the new theme could be true. When thinking of ideas for a new time/location following Ubisoft’s announcement earlier this month, a pirate assassin definitely popped into my head. The theme would allow for great new locations and weapons, along with entirely different plot lines. However, when not on land would there really be much to do besides commandeering boats and climbing sails? It would definitely make for some fabulous new visuals though, as well as snazzy new attire. Regardless of the limits of an ocean setting, I think it’s a popular enough theme to entertain the masses. Keep posted for more Creed news and feel free to comment with your thoughts on the rumours.

This weeks show is brought to you by Danny, Radar and Ninazu!

This weeks show opens with Danny telling us about a Fifa 13 competition in Australia that he is going to take part in, Ninazu talks of job hunting to fund his habit, and it all goes down hill from there…

In games we talk Dark souls, Takistan Life, Aliens Colonial marines, Crysis 3, Dead Space 3 and mucho mucho more!

Imminent releases has us excited and unsure of Crysis 3 and Metal gear solid: Revengeance, due out on the 22nd of Feb.

In News we are dismayed at more bad Gas powered games news, massively dissapointed in Aliens colonial marines, chuckle at the guy who tried to steal 19 games in his pants, and more fun and sad news besides.

We finish the show with (as usual) awesome emails from our awesome listeners! Enjoy!

Warm Bodies – A book worth reading

Straight to the point:  I AM DEAD, but it’s not so bad. I’ve learned to live with it. I’m sorry I can’t properly introduce myself, but I don’t have a name anymore. Hardly any of us do. We lose them like car keys, forget them like anniversaries. Mine might have started with an “R,” but that’s all I have now. It’s funny because back when I was alive, I was always forgetting other people’s names. My friend “M” says the irony of being a zombie is that everything is funny, but you can’t smile, because your lips have rotted off. (Isaac Marion) We’re off to a good start already, aren’t we?

When I first heard about Warm Bodies (via the movie trailer, which came out in February) I thought it was a stupid idea, let’s face it, it sounds like a poster book/movie for necrophilia, you have a living girl and a dead boy, ending up changing the world with their love. It does sound like it has a high squick factor, doesn’t it? After giving it some thought, I decided to take my chances and start reading and I haven’t regretted my decision. It seems that lately the zombie genre is making a comeback, but so far all tales about them have been mostly focused on the human characters that have to fight the plague that has taken over the world, none has ever presented the zombie point of view. None until Isaac Marion, that is (bear in mind that this statement is based on my limited knowledge).

**Beware, some spoilers ahead** Let’s see what the book is all about, shall we?

The world was hit by a plague, one that takes people and turns them into walking dead, whether they are bit or die of natural causes, the end result is the same, they get up and search for fresh flesh. In this post-apocalyptic setting we have a zombie of ambiguous age called “R”, who doesn’t remember when he was born or when he died or for however long he’s been dead, but despite all those things that seem to work against him, he is still determined to get more out of “life”. Unlike his fellow dead who spend their time by bumping into each other and forgetting everything from one moment to the next, he seems to be clinging to things like music and beauty and everything else that those with a beating heart seem to enjoy.

After devouring a brain, and apparently brains are like pot to zombies – having almost psychedelic effects, and accessing the memories of a young man, he becomes surprisingly attracted to a living girl- Julie, a girl the dead boy knew and loved, who will join him in the quest to change the world. It’s his voice that paints the world we’re entering, his thought process so deep and charming that you will be instantly taken by it, despite his apparent inability to put those thoughts into actual words. He’s the one taking us through the journey of discovering how the world can be saved, while dead, he’s still human, flawed and failing more than once, but he doesn’t despair, he doesn’t give up, he wants more, more than the hunger and the grunts and the overpowering silence that surrounds the dead.

Since the world can’t function without a villain, and the plot would suffer greatly from this lack, the author create a superior race of monsters, the Boneys, skeletal creatures that seem to thrive on the ignorance of the zombies, leading them like ruthless shepherds to the slow destruction of the last bastions of humanity. They are the ones that don’t want change, clinging to the ugliness of a filthy world where hope is not even a word worth mentioning, let alone something to feel and hang onto. Through the book we are lead to believe that these particular kind of zombies are those that have died a long time ago, their flesh rotting away slowly until nothing is left but the blackened skin and their bones, however, the ending reveals a special twist, which sheds light on what the author might have intended with his book.

Ultimately it’s not a love story between a zombie and a living girl, it’s a story of our own world and society that’s becoming so twisted and harsh, praising and needing the material things so much more than anything else, forgetting about the inherent beauty that our world possesses, forgetting about love and the very things that make us human. We are the Boneys, we are the monsters that stare at the horrors of our world and build shrines in their honour.

R and Julie (the girl that gives him a chance even while knowing he was one of the dead, one to be feared and loathed) resemble the heroes of old, the ones that lead into battle by inspiring people, the ones that solve wars with a well placed word or, in this case a kiss, but without developing a superiority complex over it, they don’t think they are alone in this. A surprising character, heard only by R is Perry, the boy he killed, a boy who in life had trouble seeing the point of a world in which people only worked to survive, forgetting what living actually was, his voice guiding our lovable corpse, freeing him of his presence only when the first sparks of the much needed change have been planted. How those seeds grow? Well…read the book and find out.

Bottom line: While clunky in parts and rushed in others, this book is worth the read, it’s fun, it’s gripping and it will keep you glued to it’s pages, not to mention that it’s a reminder that we shouldn’t forget that we’re not here just to eat and indulge in the latest gadgets, that we should seek deeper meanings in the world around us and not allow ourselves to be devoured by our inner demons, that we ought to fight them and come out victorious. Perhaps I’m reading too much into this, perhaps the author was much more literal than I give him credit for, but that’s what this book inspired in me, whether intentional or not.

Review: A Good Day To Die Hard – 5 GPP

Straight to the Point: Some decent action and can be fun, but doesn’t come close to the quality of any of the other Die Hard movies, making this the worst film in the franchise.

Warning: The following includes some minor spoilers.

John McClane is back! I’ve always been a fan of the Die Hard films, especially the first one, which really raised the bar for action films and also featured an action hero, played by someone who could actually act. I also loved the second one and I remember watching for the first time as a kid; my dad was watching it with me and explained how unlikely it was that, McClane would make it through a similar situation to the one in first film again. Well, now he’s doing it for the fifth time and I wonder what he would say now.

This time the setting has changed to Russia, where John has gone to find his estranged son. All he knows is that he’s in jail and presumes it’s related to delinquent behaviour,  but as it turns out he’s a CIA agent on a mission to protect a witness from some serious villains. As John arrives outside the courthouse he thinks his son may be in, he soon finds out that yet again, he’s in the wrong place at the wrong time when everything around him suddenly blows up. It’s then that he knows it’s his cue to get involved; so he does of course.

diehard5-2

This film features the following things, which you might expect from a Die Hard Film:

Explosions, gun-fights, car chases and helicopters – The action side of this film is pretty good. If you like to see a good explosion, then you’re in for a treat as almost everything seems to blow-up throughout the feature. The action is quite unrealistic: not that that should really bother you in a film like this and it’s not as unrealistic as taking out a helicopter with a car or jumping on to a jump-jet and hanging on, as seen in Die Hard 4.0. In case you think, at any point,  that the action isn’t as good as in the original film, then they’ve added in a jumping-through-a-window scene too; also a jumping through a glass roof, just in-case the window alone didn’t do it for you.

A family member, John needs to save  As I’ve mentioned above, this time he sets out to help his son. It turns out that he can handle himself pretty well and has taken a lot after his dad, but he can still use a bit of help from the man who has already been through this sort of thing at least four times before. Of course, his son does have a lot of resentment towards him for not being around much while he was growing up. Typical, as in all the Die Hard films, he spends all of his time trying to save his family but they never really appreciate it, because it seems that they would rather that he took them to the zoo or a baseball game instead of being a hero. The father and son dynamic works pretty well and you can see how they get to understand each other better and their relationship develops throughout the film. Also, the funniest dialogue occurs between these two characters.

But it lacks heavily in the following things, you would expect:

Strong Villains –  There are few villainous characters in this film, but none of them are very menacing. The first film’s Hans Gruber, played by Alan Rickman is a tough act to follow but none of the villains in this film come anywhere close. After capturing John McClane and son, one of them gloats about it while eating a carrot. A carrot? Is that meant to be threatening? If so, in the Looney Tunes cartoons, Elmer Fudd and Yosemite Sam would have stayed well away from Bugs Bunny. He’s the most threatening of the villains too so I’ll say no more on this.

Tension –  This is where I feel the film is lacking the most. I think the main problem is that there’s no real immediate threat. No hostages or a bomb, which could detonate, destroying a city at any moment and only one scene, where John is compromised and allows himself to be captured; and even then you know that he’s going to break himself free, smack the bad guys in the chops, steal their weapons and blow them away. You never really feel worried for any of the characters because John always escapes gunfire and kills the enemy with no real effort. Sometimes you may believe that you’re watching a video game rather than a movie, as he makes it look that easy; it’s like he’s gone through this sort of thing before or something. Most conflicts are dealt with by gunfire but it could do with the odd punch up too.

DieHard Strip

The writing generally feels quite lazy, with characters just bumping into each other, with no plot devices to get them there. The story is very predicable it times; however, there is a twist, which is unusual in Die Hard, although, it’s not a highly original one. The final scene feels  rushed too and there  isn’t much of struggle before McClane and son save the day leaving you feeling a bit cheated. In an action movie the story isn’t everything but as most of everything else is missing so a better story would have helped

The director, John Moore is best known for remakes such as The Omen but he is also responsible for Max Payne, which made me wonder if he’s ever watched the previous Die Hard films as he certainly didn’t play the Max Payne games. To me, he seems to be the wrong choice to keep this ailing franchise going.

Bruce Willis doesn’t disappoint though; he shows he’s still got it and his time is not up yet but this film shows that the Die Hard franchise’s time is most certainly up. In my opinion, it was up  after Die Hard 2: Die Harder  but some may argue that it was over after Die Hard with a Vengeance as it wraps up the story and it was always intended to be a trilogy. Either way, it’s clearly up now.
