While my friend and I were debating back and forth about possible Boba’s, he started it with Statham. Jason Statham has been spending his career typecast as an action-hero. He fits into a certain type of character, one that can work on either side of the law, and here’s my buddy’s argument for how this type of character can include Mandalorian Bounty Hunter Boba Fett.
He’s already at the top of his field. Boba Fett is the best bounty hunter in the entire Galaxy.
He spent his whole life getting there. After seeing how picking a side killed his father, he decided to go wherever the bounty took him. Didn’t matter who hired him, didn’t matter who he was hunting. All that mattered was being the best there is at what he does.
He works hard to keep that reputation. Once he takes a contract, he doesn’t stop until he gets them. Even if it requires boarding an Imperial Star Destroyer and working with the Dark Lord himself. He gets the job done, and there is nothing that he won’t do to keep it that way.
He costs a fortune. He’s the best there is, so he charges an amount that would suggest so. If cost was equal to quality, then there’d be a reason why Boba costs more than anyone else.
His reputation makes him desirable by others, in his field or in other organizations. Being so good at his job, he gets a lot of attention from other hunters and possible recruiters. This makes him a target, but it also makes him desirable to, say, the Empire.
He’s fit. Statham finds himself in predominantly action roles, requiring a level of fitness, but he’s also an expert martial artist. Boba spends a lot of time on the job, requiring a level of fitness, but also requiring a level of capability in the Mandalorian fighting style.
He has an accent. As petty as it sounds, the original Boba and Jango both had Australian accents, and that’s not too much of a jump from his English accent to an Aussie one.
While I doubt that Disney could get a name like that, or would even want to, but the fact is that he’d be a great fit for the role. ‘Til next time, junkies.
From the singular mind of horror maestro Rob Zombie comes a chilling plunge into a nightmare world where evil runs in the blood.
“The Lords of Salem” tells the tale of Heidi (Sheri Moon Zombie), a radio station DJ living in Salem, Massachusetts, who receives a strange wooden box containing a record, a “gift from the Lords.” Heidi listens, and the bizarre sounds within the grooves immediately trigger flashbacks of the town’s violent past.
Is Heidi going mad, or are the “Lords of Salem” returning for revenge on modern-day Salem?
Directed and written by Rob Zombie and from the Producers of ‘Paranormal Activity’ and ‘Insidious’, Rob Zombie’s new movie ‘Lords of Salem’ dropped its second trailer earlier this month. Using some of the same footage from the first trailer, trailer #2 offers more of an insight to the to the story of the film, but I must admit it doesn’t feel as creepy as the first.
When watching the trailers you know instantly that this is a Rob Zombie film, and no, not because Sheri Moon Zombie stars in the lead role (which she does). If you have seen a Rob Zombie movie before (House of a 1000 Corpses, The Devils Rejects, Halloween, etc.) then you will know that all his films carry a certain ambiance, a quiet yet dark and strong oppression that lures you into his movies. His characters are often capable of doing unspeakable things (and often do) and it is usually the small quiet one, unless your name is Michael Myers played by the 6’7″ Tyler Mane, in which case your the very tall one.
However, watching the trailer despite having the Rob Zombie look and feel it doesn’t quite draw you in, you are not left needing more, your are instead left wanting more to get excited about.
Lords of Salem is set for its US release on 19 April 2013 #RISINGAPRIL19

Some new images have surfaced for the forthcoming Lego Marvel Super Heroes game scheduled for release later this year… and they’re looking good!
I’ve long been a fan of the Lego series of games, from the Lego Star Wars games up to the most recent Lego Lord of the Rings game – none of them have disappointed (even the shortlived PC MMO wasn’t too bad in my opinion).
Being a bit of a Marvel fanboy helps too, and since the announcement I’ve been itching to get my hands on this… and my little Lego Deadpool! 😉 This set of concept art and character renders aren’t helping with my crack-like withdrawl-esque symptoms either! RELEASE THE GAME ALREADY!
Check out the full set of images here – I think the Iron Man one may be my favourite though.
Since Disney announced a Han Solo trilogy the same time that they announced the Boba Fett movie, it’s only fair for me to look at some news for Han speculation. On the when Moviefone got their hands on Bryan Singer, currently working on X-Men: Days of Future Past, he mentioned seeing that young Nicholas Hoult’s name was on a few shortlists for Han Solo casting. This got me thinking.
Hoult’s been busy of late- just in the last month, two movies he starred in were released theatrically. TWO. A virtual no-name until X-Men: First Class, he was then cast as a lead role in the zombie-apocalypse-romeo+juliet Warm Bodies and the fairy tale feature Jack the Giant Slayer, now going back to the character of Beast in Days of Future Past. From nerdy kid to action hero overnight is pretty outstanding, yet not entirely uncommon. Does anyone else remember Tom Cruise? Michael Keaton (Batman counts as an action role)? Zachary Quinto?
I don’t know about you guys, but after seeing this kid’s mug all over the place, it wouldn’t surprise me if Disney gave him the option of walking his action legs in a Star Warsmovie, let alone as stormtrooper-turned-smuggler Han Solo.
Singer even went so far as to say “I don’t know anything, but I literally would not be surprised if something like that happened. I almost said something to Nick today about it, like, “You know, I wouldn’t be surprised if you find yourself in one of those.” But I have no idea, even though I’m working with Simon Kinberg every day and he is involved with that franchise, I have no information about that. It’s just my own intuition.”
While I’m keeping my ear to the ground on any details about the Star Wars franchise, I’ll just ask that you junkies keep it classy.
Given that I’m the only American on here, it’s my responsibility to cover whatever conventions come my way. Yesterday was one such example. Wizard World is a traveling show, with celebrities covering certain cons. Yesterday was star studded as ever, but my broke ass backfired.
We got there at 9am, and the doors opened at 10, so luckily we got to beat some of the nastier lines. The swag bags had 7-11 exclusive WoW cups, but they were organized funny so my buddies and I got to mix and match to complete our sets while killing time in the line. Since our spot in line had a banister that oversaw the registration desk, so that we could make fun of some of the cosplayers and neckbeards that we saw while I counted the Batman shirts, most of which were identical to the one that I was wearing (and, for what it’s worth, am wearing right now).
When the doors finally opened, the first thing we did was head for the Norman Reedus booth. Luckily, we got there when we did, in spite of it being a full half hour before he showed up. When we he finally did show up, the line had backed up from his location (toward one end of the hall) to the other end of the hall (holding the Impala from Supernatural). Once we got out of the overflow and into the line itself, a buddy of mine started chanting “Merle Sucks!”, to which Norman joined in. Shortly after, I had a fangasm moment.
I’m standing there, and out of nowhere I hear a familiar voice shout “NORMAN REEDUS I LOVE YOU!” I turn around, and who do I see? None other than Brent motherfucking Spiner. He walks over to his booth (conveniently placed behind Sean Patrick Flannery’s booth, showing that all three Boondock Saints actors were in a row), leans back into Sean’s booth and yells “NORMAN! NORMAN!” Norman, sunglasses and everything (he might’ve been high, I know I would be if I had to deal with Portland fangirls all day), looks over, sees who it is, walks over and gives him a hug. While my pants are busy exploding to the sight of Daryl hugging Data, I’m fumbling to find my camera, but I couldn’t get it out until they were walking away. Once I’d gotten to a point in the line where I could see the booth, I saw the sign saying “$40 (a little over £26.50, or €31.30) per signature”. I was aggravated, as I only had $20 (£13.25 or €15.16) total in pocket money. So I took this picture and called it good.
At that point, I got out of line and went to see if anyone else cost money. The cheapest was Jamest Marsters, at $33. Angry, I decided to explore the convention and take pictures. Here’s the result, which can be found on my private facebook page and my public page.
Rochdale’s Wheatsheaf Centre was today the backdrop for day two of Dale*Con, Rochdale’s only Sci-Fi Convention. I arrived bright and early with the family to find stalls and props set up and already doing a brisk trade. Comic books were being sold, photos were being taken of happy geeks in front of a Tardis, I could already tell that the organisers had gone to a lot of work to convert this busy shopping centre into a veritable shrine to geekness. I made my way upstairs to the convention area proper and perused the Dale*Con merchandise on sale. Flanked by Stormtroopers and a very imposing Darth Vader, Dale*Con was certainly ticking all the boxes so far. Just inside I bought a couple of raffle tickets from Supergirl and BOOM – two wins! One Yoshi-shaped candy dispenser (ages 3 and up) and one signed photo of Ken Coombs from Star Wars! Oh, Dale*Con, you do spoil me.
*not pictured: Greggs sausage roll.
I spend the next few hours watching the cosplayers and picking up some bits and pieces from the stands including a toy R2D2 from Return of the Jedi that fires out a lightsaber. And I mean fires. I almost lost it in a bottle warmer in Mothercare.
Today’s big draw was Craig “Dave Lister” Charles who arrived stylishly late smoking an electric cigarette and wearing a huge smile for his fans. A queue materialised almost immediately along with a funky DJ and the man cracked on. The room was soon full of people waiting to meet the star but Mr Charles greeted each one like an old friend and no one seemed rushed or unsatisfied by their close encounter. True class.
Unlike larger events which can be a bit overfacing, Dale*Con had an amazing intimate atmosphere; you were never more than two feet from a celebrity, a star fleet officer or a Doctor and everyone was truly friendly in the was only people who are doing what they love can be. Dale*con 2013’s grand experiment is over and, in my eyes, it was more than good enough to warrant a Dale*con 2014.Although maybe with a bit more Boba Fett next year please…
It is with sad news that Geek Pride announces the passing of the top illustrator Scott Clark at the age of 43. His family announced that following a long illness Scott passed a way this week.
Scott Clark is best known for his crossover work for DC’s ‘Brightest Day’ and the Wildstorm title StormWatch.
Clark is survived by wife Kim and his son Andrew. The exact cause of death is unknown, though “Grifter” writer Frank Tieri noted on Twitter that Clark had been sick for some time while working on interiors for the series.
This week we look at Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, Michael Bay’s TMNT reboot, new releases and why I’m excited about Stoker.
Welcome to Geek Pride’s new film blog, Geeks on Film. It’s a working title, spawned from a little word play inspired by my love of the 80s and general geekiness. I like it, anyway. In this brand spanking new weekly feature, I will aim to bring our lovely readers a condensed round-up of all the news, announcements, new releases and general happenings in the world of film. The idea is to bring together tasty snippets from the past week as well as take a look at what’s being released before our fabulous writers review it for us.
For the trial run, I’ll be splitting the blog into three pretty self explanatory sections; ‘This Week’s Top Stories’, ‘New Releases’ and ‘I’m Excited About…’ which will look at upcoming events in cinema that I recommend watching out for. This week we’ll take a look at news on Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, the TMNT reboot and Muschietti’s haunting horror released today, Mama. Plus I’ll tell you why I’m looking forward to upcoming movies, Machete Kills and Stoker.
This Week’s Top Stories
Earlier this week we were treated to the first image from Sin City: A Dame to KillFor via Robert Rodriguez’ Twitter. The image features Josh Brohlin as Dwight, taking over from Clive Owen in the first film. This was news to me that Owen wouldn’t be reprising his role in the upcoming sequel, as I can’t bloody stand the fellow. I really don’t know why I don’t like Clive Owen. His dull glare, his appearance in the shockingly snooze-worthy The International or perhaps the fact that he thinks he can go around killing people with carrot (see Shoot Em Up). I just don’t know. It’s not like my utter hatred of Nicolas Cage. Now that’s self explanatory and perfectly justified. More on that some other time perhaps…
Anyway, back to my point. The change in actor is explained through the character’s need to have reconstructive surgery in the story and allows for a new take on Dwight who has a more central role in this instalment The film will also feature an original storyline created by Rodriguez and Frank Miller for Jessica Alba’s character, Nancy, which has allowed them to bring her back into play. Nomm.
In other news, it’s been announced today that the Michael Bay reboot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will star Megan Fox. A little surprising after their famous falling out during the production of the Transformers films which saw Fox be replaced for future films after comparing Bay to Hitler in an interview. Bay’s reboot should be interesting and I’d love to see him bring some interest back to the franchise.
Others snippets of Hollywood happenings include John Williams expressing an interest in getting involved with the new batch of Star Wars movies ahead of us, Marc Webb tweeting cryptic images from The Amazing Spiderman 2 and speculation that the Justice League film could be pushed back as late as 2020. Thoughts are that if Man of Steel is successful, we’ll see a trilogy first before a Justice League film, whereas if it flops, we’ll see another Batman reboot.
Webb’s Cryptic Tweet
New Releases
We’ve had quite a rush of exciting releases in the cinema over the past few months in preparation for awards season which is now beginning to die down. Not to worry, things usually pick up in May/June for a geektastic superhero season and there are some interesting flicks to look forward to over the coming months as well – more of that later.
Today’s main release of interest is Andrés Muschietti’s Mama, which seems to be being solely advertised with ‘Presented by Guillermo del Toro’ stamped all over it. Starring Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Game of Thrones) and Jessica Chastain (Zero Dark Thirty), Mamatells the story of two young girls saved from their murderous father by a supernatural source, found in the woods five years later by their uncle. The girls have become feral and any attempts to change this are met by the wrath of the very force that saved them from their father.
The film definitely has that del Toro touch to it and it’s easy to see why he was interested in Muschietti’s offering. If Mama is anything like del Toro’s work, it will definitely be one to watch.
I’m Excited About…
I’m really excited about the upcoming Sin City sequel, especially now that Clive Owen isn’t involved. I jest, sort of. We’ll be treated to a reprisal of Mickey Rourke and Jessica Alba, as well as the inclusion of Joesph Gordon-Levitt. Sadly, we’ll have to wait until around October for that one.
I’m also psyched for another release from Rodriguez hopefully taking place in around July, Machete Kills. If you haven’t watched Machete, do it. Pure B-movie bliss starring Danny Trejo as a machete wielding Mexican that spawned from a fake trailer appearing before Tarantino and Rodriguez’s Grindhouse double bill. It’s pure mayhem and involves Trejo’s character, Machete, using someone’s intestines to jump out of a window. Enough said. The sequel will also see Jessica Alba return as well as introducing Charlie Sheen (as the US President) and Lady Gaga to the mix along with many more.
For something a little closer, I’m very much looking forward to Park Chan-wook’s Stoker which is to be released in cinemas next week. Director of Oldboy and Thirst, I’m a big fan and I’m interested to see his US debut in this psychological thriller. The film has no connection to Dracula, with it’s title taking shape from name of the family the plot focuses on. Starring Mia Wasikowska and Nicole Kidman, this is definitely one to watch. Expect more excitement on it’s release next week and hopefully a review to follow.
Rochdale is my home town and unfortunately it hasn’t had a lot of good press recently, so I am happy to be reporting on a positive from my fair town. Today was the first day of Dale Con our very own sci-fi convention. I should add that if you are attending tomorrow, do not expect anything in the region of Manchester MCM Expo of London Comic Con, this is a small town event, free to all and so is not comparable with other well known events. That said I have been impressed by the offerings of today.
Omega Collectibles
On the upper floor were the main attractions, these included a wandering Darth Vader, Storm Trooper and Clone Trooper more than happy to pose for photographs. C3P0, R2D2 and another couple of Storm Troopers were on display as well Han Solo in carbonite. Stupid Jar Jar Binks was also there and sorry but in our house that is the only way we refer to Jar Jar, I am sure you understand why.
Today and tomorrow Dale Con has a host of Star Wars actors taking part in signing sessions throughout the day, these include Pam Rose who played ‘Weird Girl’ Leesub Sirln in Star Wars: New Hope; Alan Flyng who played a Storm Trooper in the iconic Carbon Chamber scene as well as a Imperial Officer in Return of the Jedi; Stephanie English a Rebel Technician from Empire Strikes Back; Ken Coombs who appeared in Star Wars as well as four Bond films; Brian Wheeler who played a Jawa. But by far the main attraction happens tomorrow when Craig Charles aka Lister from the brilliant Red Dwarf, who will not only be signing but taking part in a Q&A session at 1pm.
I spoke to Martin Ballard, the event organiser and Chairman of Rochdale’s town centre management. He explained that the idea to run this event was only conceived around November, then began the task of sourcing attractions to draw the public, with the final announcement came in January, delayed because they couldn’t go public until the special guest, Craig Charles, had been confirmed. Today was organised to bring people back to Rochdale and they have certainly put their heart into it, there was a lot more to see than I expected which is very encouraging. I do think what today suffered from was a lack of publicity, I myself a hardcore geek only found out about it 2 weeks ago. However, I was impressed by the number of people milling around and posing for photos with the props, and these weren’t just geeks. It was pleasing to see the smiles of the children when they came across characters they recognise. As far as this kind of event goes I would say it was quiet, but then it is a Friday and a lot of people may be working. I expect there to be a lot more people and a lot more ‘buzz’ tomorrow, with the added attraction of Lister. If you are in the area I urge you to check it out tomorrow.
Joe Matthews
C’mon you can never have too many pictures of you with a Dalek, Tardis or Storm Trooper, plus smegheads, Lister is going to be there. I particularly recommend stopping by and chatting to local freelance artist & illustrator Joe Matthews. He was happy to talk to me and my extremely chatty children and kindly drew illustrations for them both; Xander was very happy with his Spider-Man. I suspect this will be popular attraction tomorrow so head there early to get your drawing. I do hope that more people will make an effort and cosplay, there is £50 worth of WheatSheaf shopping vouchers on offer, so come on geeks crack out your costumes.
I hope to see some of you geeks tomorrow and I’ll be joined by Ben, a fellow writer at Geek Pride. Feel free to say hello (look out for the purple hair) and give us your opinion of Rochdale’s very first Sci-Fi convention.
Straight To The Point: A perfect version of an already phenomenal game, Persona 4 Golden is an essential experience that will take over your life.
Originally a spin-off of larger RPG franchise Shin-Megami-Tensei, Japanese developer Atlus’ anime-styled Persona series has enjoyed a sharp increase in popularity in recent years. Born on PSX the series leapt to Playstation 2 with Persona 3, and the release of Persona 4 not only saw the next major title in the series but also one of the very last (and very best) games on the console. Now just over four years after it first arrived in 2008, this modern classic has received a portable remake which is heading to the UK this week. Series fans put off by the glaring limitations of Persona 3 Portable need not worry. If you own a PS Vita, Persona 4 Golden comes highly recommended.
Essentially the plot boils down to a story of teenagers with superpowers solving murders. Players take the role of a silver-haired high-schooler under a name of their choice. Leaving the city behind, the protagonist moves to the small rural town of Inaba where he will be living with his uncle Dojima and cousin Nanako for the next year. Initially a slice-of-life drama, things soon take a turn for the sinister as a young woman is found dead hanging from a TV antenna. In a series of bizarre events following a rumour of a ‘Midnight Channel’, the protag and two classmates, Yosuke and Chie, discover a secret world inside the TV and soon realise the murders are connected. Though the other realm is a dangerous place filled with a variety of bizarre monsters, the team wield the power of Persona, the ability to call forth a super powered alter ego to protect themselves and others. With determination and Personas, protag and chums strive to save anyone targeted by the killer whilst juggling their day-to-day lives. It’s all told with a joyously hip yet darkly adult tone that remains incredibly unique.
At its core Persona 4 Golden is a classic dungeon-crawler. As the primary objective is always to rescue potential victims of the murder plot and solve the mystery, the player is encouraged to visit the TV world after school. Each dungeon has a theme specific to the psychology of the character located within. This ranges from a castle for the daughter of an innkeeper feeling trapped, to a ‘men-only’ bath house for a tough guy who likes cute things. Most dungeon floors are randomly generated and the common enemies or ‘shadows’ are physically embodied, removing the oft-hated random encounter system. In this vein, player and enemy advantages are decided upon who lands a hit from behind, you or the shadow.
The battles themselves are both familiar and unique as personas act as skill sets for each character. Physical attacks drain HP and all other techniques consume SP covering the usual range of elemental, healing, buff/debuff, and passive abilities. Whilst the personas of team mates remain mostly the same throughout the game, the protag is able to carry multiple personas, receiving them at the end of battles, and fusing them together in a location named the ‘velvet room’ to make brand new ones. As the group leader the player can give direct commands to other characters or set them to a strategy. Enemies often have weaknesses, and taking advantage of this makes that particular shadow vulnerable and gives the current character an additional turn. If all enemies are down, the protag will be prompted for an ‘all-out attack’ where the whole team joins in on an attack for extra damage.
Outside the dungeon, P4G takes ‘RPG’ to a higher level by bringing in a simulation element. Players are tasked with effectively managing their time between school, shopping, part-time jobs, hanging with friends, and kicking some evil ass. As each day passes you’ll experience both compulsory events such as school and choose from non-compulsory ones such as fishing and reading to fill your spare time with. In many instances your choices and actions will be rewarded with personal growth, for instance reading a book on manliness raises your courage, which feed back into other areas of your virtual life, such as having the balls to ask a female character for their phone number.
Managing your relationships is particularly important due to the ‘Social Links’ they form. Spending time with a character plays a cutscene that will reveal a little more about them and raise the bond between you. All characters and personas in the game belong to different arcana types. So for instance by spending time with Chie, personas of the Chariot arcana will receive an exp bonus when born out of fusion. Likewise, having a persona of the same type arcana already will significantly raise the chance of a social link increase.
On top of all this the player must also keep watch of the daily weather forecast, as the game will end if you haven’t beaten a particular dungeon before the town of Inaba is covered in fog. In between chores there are also various holiday events to partake in, many of which are hilarious and really help to bring depth to the vibrant cast. On the Playstation 2 this was a huge and fantastic game, giving players a challenging, addictive and unforgettable experience. So when one considers that Golden is an expanded and improved version, then it becomes evident which way this review will swing.
Right off the bat fans will notice the obvious differences. Trophies, a brand new catchy intro, dazzling HD graphics, new music tracks, a change of voice actors for Teddie and Chie, and a neat little feature referred to as ‘TV Listings’. From here players can access music tracks, cutscenes, live concert clips, and other bonuses, expanding the library as the game progresses. Albeit minimal, there are online functions. By enabling ‘SOS’ on the touch screen you can send out a gift of HP & SP to another online player at the end of their battle. Via ‘Vox Populi’ you can also see the most popular uses of free time at any particular point. Ultimately both are unnecessary but may prove of some use to beginners.
Further still there are a slew of extra bits and pieces. Mopeds are used as transport to new locations. There are new holiday events such as Halloween and a skiing trip. Two new social links arrive with Adachi and a mysterious lady named Marie. Persona customisation is enganced thanks to Skill Cards, social link skills, and the ability to select which skills your fused persona will inherit. Fellow team members can now gain combo moves and third- tier personas. There’s also gardening, TV shopping, night events, costumes, and so on.
What we end up with is a major revision of the original title. What little gripes there were before in terms of accessibility have now been corrected. Chie’s new voice may at first take some adjusting to and the online features are easily ignored. However these are indeed the nittiest of nitpicks when one considers just how much high-quality bang for buck is present in this immense package. Offering over 100 hours of gaming goodness on the go, Persona 4 Golden is not only an utterly essential PS Vita title, it is one of modern gaming’s highest achievements full stop. Miss this at your peril.
