Clive Barker’s Hellraiser: The Road Below – 8 GPPs

0

Stood in the depths of the labyrinth Kirsty Cotton recalls the tale of a time not long after joining Levianthan’s ranks, where she was summoned to New Orleans by Lemarchand’s puzzle box.

A tale involving a bitter blood feud between families and a warning about where good intentions lead.

The rich world of Clive Barker‘s Hellraiser was previously the basis for a series of critically acclaimed comics from Epic Publishing featuring the likes of Neil Gaiman and Alex Ross amongst others in the early 90s.

6b7b9b20f9125298e7eb5ecd679a1e87In 2011 a new series started with BOOM! Studios with Clive Barker as co-writer, which despite the franchises longevity was only the third time Barker was directly involved in the world of Hellraiser. This series would be set in the ‘canon’ world established in the original novel/film.

Seeking revenge after his last defeat, Pinhead manipulated Kirsty Cotton, longtime adversary of the Cenobites, into taking his place in Hell.

Hoping to save her friends and family, Kirsty sacrificed herself and took over the role inhabited by Captain Elliot Spencer. With Spencer now mortal and returned to Earth, Kirsty now reigns in Hell as the Cenobites’ new Priestess.

The Road Below is spun off from this series.

The story is split between the present in the depths of Hell and the past in New Orleans as Kirsty relates her tale to the cenobite known only as The Female (which fans of the original film will recognise).

In New Orleans the story centres around Rhea Wolfe who works in an antiquities/occult shop along with its owner Otto her teenage daughter Cordelle and the mysterious Neithercoat.

The relationship between Rhea and her rebellious daughter is well written and shows Seifert has a good handle on making characters feel like real people, which is fundamental for the story to have any real impact. When Cordelle shows up at the shop she gets a lecture about not being able to get job and is told to not touch anything. Cordelle promptly goes in the back and announces ‘touching things’. This leads into a neat red herring as Cordelle is shown getting ever closer to the Lemarchand puzzle box which is sat on a shelf alongside numerous other items.

Rhea’s relationship with her daughter is just one facet of the story though and an encounter with the monstrous looking Neithercoate is another important relationship. Rhea’s family the Wolfes have a bloody history with the Neithercoates and neither family is entirely human either.

dd674bf569a99cfe4441cb0808424ed0

Startled that her long buried past has found her and after narrowly surviving an encounter whilst visiting the grave of her husband, Rhea summons Kirsty with the Lemarchand puzzle box and attempts somewhat amateurishly to bind her to her will.

Neithercoate explains ‘your kind are dreams come true….while mine are living nightmares’ to a scared Cordelle and this is as far as explaining exactly what the Wolfes and Neithercoates are but rather than it being a problem it works and works well.

The demonic looking Neithercoate is a great character and his encounter in the graveyard establishes who he is clearly and memorably. Shrugging off a severed arm and quickly regenerating it, also establishes he has considerable power.

Kirsty Cotton is also an interesting character, the way she reacts to her summoning and her apparent binding with a bemused ‘What is it you want- the usual Faustian nonsense?’ is an amusing touch.

Kirsty is new to her role though and it’s also made clear she’s not omnipotent and a powerplay between Rhea and Kirsty is well handled with Cordelle stumbling on the scene just as Rhea is overpowered and relays to a disbelieving Otto ‘This woman with pins in her face! She made the walls open up,and she dragged mom into them!’

The perspective of The Female is an interesting counterpoint to Kirsty as she relates the tale in Hell too, with her rather coldy pointing out ‘You should have discarded the body. The transgressors soul was enough’.

Seifert’s fertile imagination is equalled by Haemi Jang’s art which is impressive throughout, with several fight sequences both magical and physical being clear, propulsive and absorbing .

Rhea’s stint in Hell is particularly disturbing as she finds herself trapped in a vast mortuary with row upon row of steel mortuary trays stretching out infinitely all hosting her daughter Cordelle’s lifeless body in a different state of mutilation.

Kirsty Cotton’s design, one of white robes and white scarves is a distinct contrast to the black leather and chains that immediately come to mind for Hellraiser and yet it works perfectly and also reflects Kirty’s different mind set to the other cenobites.

The Road Below’s biggest strength is the ambiguity which flows through it all and the subversion of tropes like the demonic Neithercoate, who becomes a far more sympathetic character when his story is revealed.

Intelligent horror is a rare thing more so in the medium of comics and BOOM! Studios delivers in style here.

Artifacts Volume #5

0

Dr Rachael Harrison discovered the mutilated remains of a Bulgarian gangster and met Tom Judge a former priest now working with the F.B.I . Happy to return to her work in a Manhattan hospital, Rachael may have left the body behind but her perception of the world has been altered and it has something to do with a family heirloom.

Meanwhile Tom Judge and Tilly Grimes find themselves having to deal with a ritual murder at the Lincoln Memorial and Daniel Baptiste realises her new lover Finch being host to The Angelus is somewhat problematic.

Following Jackie Estacado remaking the universe at the conclusion of the original Artifacts story arc, things are different but the same. A distorted reflection of what used to be.

This is fertile ground for some great story work and Marz doesn’t disappoint.

One of the best things about Artifacts is it doesn’t fit into any specific genre hole and whilst this could come off a little scattered if handled the wrong way, the story here flows together as the interconnected lives of the numerous different characters are revealed.

The first story in this collection Phantoms of the Heart focuses on Rachael Harrison and her job as a doctor in a Manhattan hospital before events lead her to move to Massachusetts.

Rachel makes a new friend.
Rachel makes a new friend.

This story following the action of the previous volume, dials things down as we see Rachael go about her life. There’s plenty of detail too which lays the foundations for a believable character who is just a regular person who is on the fringe of some very irregular things . She reassures a child patient, has to deal with her possessive ex-husband who is working in the same Manhattan hospital when Tom Judge comes to see her. Her mother features and she flirts with a cop in her new job in Massachusetts, all these elements ground the character in a world that is recognisable.

Once this regular world has been introduced, strange things keep happening. The subtlety of Phantoms of the Heart might frustrate those who prefer more action and less character development but the former rings hollow without anytime spent on the latter and the creepy atmosphere which builds throughout is nicely done.

Blood Rites has Tom Judge and Tilly Grimes dealing with a disturbing murder, encountering a demon and performing an exorcism.

There could have been a risk of punky numeromancer Grimes seeming like a spare part here, since a lot of this story settles on Tom Judge, a flashback to a confessional from his priest days sets a memorable tone, however having the two split up works well and also reinforces the fact Judge isn’t really a people person.

There’s an ingenuity to having Judge using The Rapture get into a knock down drag out fight with the demon using an innocent man as a disguise, literally, only for the fight to get called off as the police show up to arrest the possessed man with his demonic hitchhiker now back in hiding .

This leads to one of the best and most memorable sequences in a comic for some time as Tom Judge performs an exorcism in the police station, not that the police actually believe that demons are real. This takes place over several pages which crackle with atmosphere, focussing on Judge’s incantations and the observations of the police outside the observation room.

Tom Judge takes on a daemon. .
Tom Judge takes on a daemon. .

Grimes being rather annoyed at being ditched by her partner whilst she was deciphering the runes left at the crime scene further cements the pairs relationship. Grimes doesn’t like the bitter truth of the possessed man being imprisoned/sanctioned for the demon’s murderous ways despite being innocent, it’s a reminder that the police and the justice system aren’t geared to handle the reality of how the world really is, as Judge bluntly points out how guilty the man looks in the eyes of the law and also that there are more pressing concerns.

Fallen from Heaven centres on the relationship between Danielle Baptiste and Finch the new host of The Angelus.

The opening images of the citadel of The Angelus being under siege from the gargantuan tentacles of some unknown creature whilst being narrated by the two oblivious lovers as they lay in bed establishes the vastly contrasting elements of their relationship, on the one hand it’s down to earth as Finch points out ‘I’m really more of a beer girl’ but Finch is also the host to an ancient power.

These two opposing elements come together with a crash as a wounded soldier from The Angelus host appears in Dani’s appartment to tell of the decimation of the citadel.

What’s immediately apparent is Marz treats Dani and Finch’s burgeoning relationship just like any other and it’s refreshing to see that same sex relationships can be handled without any sensationalism.

That Dani pulls a gun out and threatens to blow the soldiers head off ,’I know The Angelus is part of your life, but I’m not used to having…… that ……show up in my bedroom’, is a reminder that she’s not some damsel in distress.

Dani’s deja vu upon visiting the citadel is another nod to the universe not being quite the same as originally Dani was the host of The Angelus.

That a story can shift from a quiet bedroom scene of two lovers in bed, to a battle with a huge Lovecraftian creature and not only work, but also add more depth to their relationship shows how good a storyteller Mars is.

These stories would work well individually that they blend together well is another reason that Artifacts is such a unique and impressive title.

The team of Ron Marz and artist extraordinaire Stjepan Sejic are pretty much responsible for completely changing the way Top Cow’s characters are seen. This started with Witchblade, which under Marz’s influence went from cult t&a styled title to something critically acclaimed, this rejuvenation has continued with his Artifacts title taking in the numerous assorted characters of Top Cow’s universe which didn’t fit in Witchbalde or The Darkness and re-working them to fit this vision.

This vision has been impressively rendered by Stjepan Sejic, whose digital art is both eye popping and versatile. The mundane, Rachael speaking to her mother, the fantastical, Finch taking on the huge creature, the dramatic, Tom Judge’s exorcism, the endearing, Finch and Dani talking in bed and the disturbing, the demon emerging from it’s hosts body are handled impressively and with an epic sense of scale in some cases.

Geek Pride Interviews Cryptic COO Craig Zinkievich

Craig Zinkievich, COO of Cryptic Studios
Craig Zinkievich, COO of Cryptic Studios

Recently I got the chance to interview Craig Zinkievich, the COO of Cryptic Studios about his involvement in the new Dungeons & Dragons MMO title Neverwinter.

Craig is a veteran game developer, working on such titles as Star Trek Online, Champions Online and is now in the throws of executive producer duties on Neverwinter.

I asked Craig about how the game is shaping-up, and how his past experiences have helped shape the game.

There’s also a question from Geek Pride reader Lee Kendrick Walker thrown-in for good measure about competition with other high-profile MMOs, so many thanks to Lee for submitting that to us.

Cryptic Studios have two great long-standing MMOs under their belt in the form of City of Heroes & City of Villains – is there a certain pressure to outdo them, or is it more like a healthy competition?

I love the work we did on CoH and CoV – but we’re always trying to make each game we release better than the ones before.

MMORPG.com gave Neverwinter their “Best in Show” award at PAX East last year – does that accolade bring any extra pressure in terms of delivering the highest quality product you can? Or does it alleviate the pressure in giving you confidence that people love it before it’s even released?

Totally! But it also drives the development team to live up to the expectations.

Neverwinter
Graphically beautiful, this dragon would even make Khaleesi envious.

Cryptic Studios were acquired by Perfect World Entertainment in 2011 – one of the biggest Free-To-Play game producers in America. Perfect World are responsible for bringing us the excellent Torchlight (soon to be an MMO), Jade Dynasty, Blacklight: Retribution and Forsaken World. The acquisition had a little impact on the development of Neverwinter, so I asked Craig about Cryptic being incorporated under PWE’s wing.

I understand the game was initially due for release in 2011 – and the studio’s acquisition by Perfect World Entertainment delayed it. Did the integration into PWE go smoothly?

Yes! It’s amazing being partnered with the most successful F2P publisher in North America. They do a great job supporting us – and we’ve learned a ton from them.

Was the change from a co-operative multiplayer game into a free-to-play MMO always on the cards, and was it difficult to shift the game type into that genre?

We always wanted to make Neverwinter into an MMO. That’s in Cryptic’s DNA. Joining with Perfect World gave us the opportunity to make the game we always wanted.

Why did you decide to step away from the Neverwinter Nights series? Was the game always intended to take that direction, or was it initially conceived as a continuation of the series?

We love D&D, we are great fans of the Forgotten Realms universe and the Sword Coast. We all played and adored NWN, NWN2 and the Baldur’s Gate series. But we always wanted to make an MMO – we knew that we’d have to step away from the other games in order to do that.

How are you looking to expand the Neverwinter universe and further develop the franchise as your game is released, and the storyline develops?

It’s great to work so closely with Wizards of the Coast and R.A. Salvatore to make sure that what we put in the game gets reflected elsewhere and vice-versa.

Neverwinter Boss
The character’s armour looks great, and the boss battles look very fun

There’s been a lot of emphasis of late on game DLC and expansions, with World of Warcraft bringing out the Mists of Pandaria expansion, and console DLC being sometimes controversial and often divisive with players. I asked Craig further about expansions and how Neverwinter will progress past the game’s launch.

Will there be any expansions to Neverwinter (Like WoW’s Cataclysm & Burning Crusade etc), or will future game content be purely mission/story-based?

100%. We’re already working on post-launch content. We’ve been making MMOs here at Cryptic for over 10 years and we know the games live and die based on post-launch support. Expect to see it come fast and furious for Neverwinter.

Are there any features or aspects of Neverwinter that have been directly influenced by your time working on Star Trek Online or Champions Online?

Definitely. The teams are constantly playing each other’s games and learning from each other. We’ve made 5 full MMOs here at Cryptic – we try to use our experience to make the best game possible.

What’s your favourite aspect of Neverwinter at the moment? Do you have a favourite character archetype, ability or game feature that still makes you say “Wow”?

I play Rogues almost exclusively. Lately, I’ve really gotten into the Profession system.

Neverwinter Undead Archer
I’m loving the undead hunter/archer look

Have there been any problematic features, or features that you’ve had to spend more time on than the others?

Yes – we iterate on every feature on Neverwinter. Our goal is to get a feature playable as fast as possible then play it and iterate on it until we love it. Some systems click immediately, some take longer.

How do you approach something as iconic as Dungeons & Dragons, and make sure you’re sticking as close to the source material as possible? (ie. The tabletop “Forgotten Realms” campaign and the books by R.A. Salvatore)

We’re all long-term D&D pen and paper player s here at Cryptic – so a lot of that is just built into our “inner geek”. But it’s been great working directly with the folks at Wizards of the Coast and talking with R.A. Salvatore to make sure we’re true to the source material.

Was Neverwinter ever going to be a subscription-based game like World of Warcraft?

No. We’re extremely excited about the F2P model.

How do you intend to balance competing with existing MMOs such as WoW and LOTRO (and their different pricing structures) as well as expected new entrants like The Elder Scrolls Online? (question from Lee Kendrick Walker)

You make the best game you can and put it out there. I think that’s the primary thing gamers think about when they sit down to play a game. Is this game worth my time? Pricing comes after.

With Neverwinter – we’ve focused on making the best game we possibly can. Dungeons and Dragons lore, exhilarating action combat, user generated content – that’s how we’ll compete.

Neverwinter Knights
The smoke effects and attention to detail is stunning

Then I asked a question that I prettymuch walked into:

What would you say is the best MMORPG (aside from Neverwinter of course) at the moment?

Star Trek Online. : )

I think if Craig had given any other answer than STO, I’d have been very surprised! Continuing in the questioning of other game titles, I asked about Craig’s non-work habits and favourite games.

What’s your favourite game of the last 6 months?

I haven’t been able to play a ton of new things during the last 5-6 months of crunch on Neverwinter. That being said, I have managed to put significant time into Kerbal Space Program.

How do you relax when you’re taking a break from the development process?

Play games. : )

Did you ever do tabletop roleplaying in your youth?

In my youth!? Of course! Never stopped playing them, either!

Craig Zinkievich, thank you very much for taking the time to answer our questions, and good luck with the release of Neverwinter – I’m looking forward to having a crack at it myself!

You can follow Craig via his Twitter account at @CrypticZinc

Neverwinter is due for release later this year.

Quicksilver joins the cast of X-Men: Days of Future Past!

0

Quicksilver

Barely a week after Joss Whedon confirmed the appearance of both Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch in ‘The Avengers 2‘, Bryan Singer has revealed on Twitter the casting of Quicksilver in his directorial return to the world of X-Men in: ‘Days of Future Past‘. He tweeted:

“Before he was an #Avenger, he was just a REALLY fast kid. Thrilled to say #EvanPeters is joining #XMen #DaysOfFuturePast as #Quicksilver.”

Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are the mutant children of Magneto, first appearing in ‘Uncanny X-Men’ March 1964. They first joined the Avengers the following year.  Singer’s choice of words here seems very deliberate in establishing the character’s origin and where he belongs.

It does seem peculiar  that this news should appear so swiftly after Whedon’s confirmation of their appearance in ‘The Avengers 2’. That script is still in the draft stages- the film being due for release May 1, 2015, whereas ‘Days of Future Past’ is slated for July 18, 2014 and is well into production. The last casting news for the X-Men film came well over a month ago, adding fuel to the fire.

It remains to be seen whether this is a move by Fox to undercut Marvel Studios and beat them to the punch, or whether this announcement might be followed with news of Scarlet Witch’s inclusion as well. This development follows hot on the heels of renewed rumours of Irish actress Saoirse Ronan reportedly being marked for the role of Scarlet Witch in the Avengers sequel. The Mary Sue reports: that: ‘[she’d] love to be in it.’ The rumour states that Marvel Studios were viewing the actress as the “archetype” for their character.

Saoirse Ronan potentially The Scarlet Witch

Could it be that the two studios are making a deal and the characters will appear in both films, portrayed by the same actors? Whilst Singer even mentioning the Avengers may point to this, it seems unlikely. Last year Kevin Feige went on record stating that both studios have the rights to the characters, although Fox were unable to mention ‘The Avengers’ and Marvel Studios were unable to mention ‘mutants’ or the characters’ parentage in their respective films.

Evan PetersIt certainly gives Whedon something to think about; he may be encouraged to redraft his script or remove the characters altogether, instead using any other of the legion of legally unrestricted avenging heroes, but I personally don’t see that as a necessary step. With ‘Iron Man Three‘s’ impressive run at the box office, the studio can afford to take the ‘competition’ and present their own versions of these characters.

With such a large cast with many new additions, ‘Days of Future Past’ will surely have a hard time lending any great amount of screen time to Quicksilver and potentially he could appear in only a cameo role; this is where Whedon should have the advantage.

Nevertheless, with the Days of Future Past storyline it will be interesting to see if and how Michael Fassbender’s and/or Sir Ian Mckellen’s Magneto(s) interact with Evan Peters‘ Quicksilver. Peters is best known for his role in tv series: American Horror Story, and is no stranger to comic book adaptations with a role in movie ‘Kick-Ass’ (as Todd).

Dearly Departing Dexter: The End Begins

0

With the final series kicking off next month, here’s a look back at the show about everybody’s favourite serial killer, it’s controversy and the possibility of Dexter‘s demise.

americas-most-beloved-serial-killer--large-msg-131755171488On 30th June it’s the beginning of the end for all of you Dexter fans out there. That’s right, season eight will be kicking off next month and it’s going to be the last leg for our beloved anti-hero. With the nature of the show it’s inevitable that it had to end at some point, and to be perfectly honest it’s surprising how many series we’ve got out of our deeply disturbed Dexter. I’m going to take a look back at the series, both on screen and the original novels, as well as offering a glimpse of what might be in store for everybody’s favourite serial killer next month.

I’ve always been a huge fan of the show and really do think there’s just nothing else quite like it. Dexter Morgan is the modern superhero, stripped of any powers or status and portrayed as a troubled and disturbed vigilante. Forget Batman, Dexter is the ultimate dark knight, with his ‘dark passenger’. Miami forensics expert by day and ‘bay harbour butcher’ by night, he’s quite the complex character. Fans of Jeff Lindsay’s books on which the show is based will agree that the show has strayed very far from the text, although, arguably for the better. Dexter and Deborah’s relationship in the books always unsettled me slightly, even from the outset in Darkly Dreaming Dexter. Yes, the last series from Showtime certainly upped the game in the a-little-more-than-sisterly-love area, but I found their relationship difficult to grasp in the books.

The TV series always presented a more awkward relationship between Deb, who wants to stick by her brother no matter what and Dexter, seemingly incapable of feeling or even understanding human emotion. However, the tension has always been there between the siblings in the show, no doubt aided by the fact that Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter were married for a brief period during the show. It’s an interesting story actually, starting off with the couple beginning dating in 2007 and eloping on New Year’s Eve the following year. However, the marriage didn’t last and the couple separated back in 2011. Well, that must have been awkward. Especially during those steamy moments Deb experienced last series…

The Controversy of a Killer

Despite how charming Michael C.Hall might be at times, Dexter’s status as a serial killer who kills the bad guys has always been extremely controversial. As an audience, we readers and viewers are encouraged to route for Dexter’s success. We don’t want him to get caught and we want him to keep strapping murderers to his table and claim revenge on behalf of their victims, which creates a problematic scenario.

Despite him being a ‘good guy’ and the series protagonist, Dexter is ultimately a killer. Back in the early days of cinema, even as late as the 1930s, you simply couldn’t get a film released in the US if it glorified a bad guy. Gangsters, thieves and murderers had to get their just desserts, or a film wouldn’t even pass certification. Now, in 2013, this sort of thing is still an issue in modern cinema and television.

The Parents Television Council in the USA strongly protested the show being aired when it was first released, and it has had connections with actual crimes, rather memorably in the case of Mark Twitchell in 2011. Twitchell was an aspiring filmmaker who adopted the persona of Dexter Morgan on Facebook and later in real life, and was convicted of first degree murder. There have also been other cases where individuals have commented that they feel like Dexter, claiming to be inspired to commit crimes by his character.

A Look Back At Our Dark Passenger

WARNING, if you’ve not seen all of the series, now is the time to leave this place and avoid the fiendish creatures that are SPOILERS.

Like all shows, Dexter experienced both highs and lows. The first series was phenomenal, it was like nothing else on TV and in my eyes perfectly captured Jeff Lindsay’s work. We were introduced to Dexter and his ‘dark passenger’, uneasy about his character for a while and then warming to him as the show developed. Despite Lila pissing me off to no end in series two, the war between Dexter and Doakes made for great watching.35c64r

Series three definitely sagged for me and I found Miguel to be a disappointing enemy, but things well and truly picked up on the introduction of the Trinity Killer in series four. Perhaps my favourite series, Trinity was a fabulous villain and John Lithgow played him perfectly. I can never get his performance out of my mind when I see him elsewhere, and even on his cameos in How I Met Your Mother I found the man terrifying. Rita’s death was so unexpected with the show being in it’s forth year and that moment when Dexter found her in the bathtub with little Harrison sitting on the floor was just horrifying. Extremely well done, but horrible all the same.

Then we had series five, the less said about that the better. Lumen was just an awful character and her involvement in the series made Rita’s recent death seem less emotional and arguably made the moment lose it’s edge. Luckily, the show picked up again in series five with the Doomsday Killer, another great villain and this was definitely a series with a twist. Dexter continued to thrive through to the most recent series following on from the cliffhanger in which Deb sees Dex kill Doomsday.

The Beginning of the End

dexter-season-8-posterThat brings us to series seven, the beginning of Dexter’s demise. With Deb finding out about Dexter’s dark passenger and LaGuerta later becoming involved, leading to her death in the finale. So, what can we expect from series eight? In my opinion, Dexter has to die, his life as a rather unassuming blood spatter analyst is falling to pieces. Doakes was onto him, then we’ve had Lila, Lumen and Hannah got involved. Deb found out her brother’s dark secret and then LaGuerta got involved which saw her, like many of the others, meet her demise.

So, I see three options for Dexter. He, Deb and Harrison leave Miami and start a new life somewhere, he gets caught and goes to prison, or Dexter dies. I can’t see him running away, surely if he started a new life somewhere is dark passenger would simply take over and if Dex went to prison, the inability to feed his hunger would surely send him insane. Both of these paths also leave the series open, and with it being confirmed that this is definitely the last series, I can’t see that happening. So, does Dexter die?

I really don’t know what’s going to happen, but it’s the scenario that makes the most sense and the tagline ‘The End Begins’ seems to suggest Dexter’s demise. I’d rather the show keep going, but arguably it’s time it ended. For now, let’s take a look at the trailer for series eight which hits the US next month, and prepare to say goodbye to our dearly departing Dexter.

Kick Start This! – Nursery Rhymes for little geeks from SurReal Mother Geek

I am a geek and mother which has given me the privilege of witnessing my children’s first steps into the world of geekdom.  It makes me zombieproud to hear my son ask “How do you kill zombies?” or my daughter to ask when the next issue of a comic is out, they absorb our culture and accept it unquestioning. I take my role in raising the next generation of geeks very seriously, I even share experiences over at my Geek Parenting Facebook page and Tumblr (shameless self promotion done).

But there is something that is quite frustrating, something that has me wishing away their childhood, for as much as I can teach them there is plenty that I can’t expose them to. They are too young to enjoy many of the  geek classics. For instance Buffy, Firefly and Supernatural are far to scary and inappropriate for my children to view, but man I really want them know about it. So what do you do? Just hang around and wait for them to mature?

Luckily for us the folks over at SurReal Mother Geek have had a brilliant idea…Mother Goose nursery rhymes re-written to include many aspects of our geek culture. Embed the knowledge young, in an age appropriate way and give your younglings an advantage.”A great idea!”  I hear you cry, but where can you get your hands on this, well that is where they need your help. They have a bright and wonderful book ready for publication and have started a KickStarter aimed at funding the production of a book and an interactive app for the iPad ready to launch at GenCon August 2013.

Although I can’t post all the rhymes, because, well it would spoil it, I can let you know that SurReal Mother Geek promise to cover a number of topics including Pirates Vs Ninjas, the ever important apocalypse planning, steampunk, sci-fi and more. Having had a sneak peek I can assure you many aspects of our culture are pleasingly addressed in a catchy and informative manner, I’m assured by the creators that there are a number of references in the images that the grown ups will enjoy spotting. This is truly a family orientated project and a lot more fun to read than the usual nursery rhymes, it is to be enjoyed by kids and adults alike.

The creator Diana Pressnell, a fellow mother geek, explains why she started this project:
Twenty years has seen a lot of change for the geek community.  What was once uncool is becoming more accepted every day.  We geeks no longer have to hide our hobbies and we’re slowly breaking down the stereotype of what a ‘geek’ is.  This shift has affected men, women, and children alike within geekdom.  We can be proud of our interests, now, as well as openly raise our kids or take on proteges to train in the ways of the  geek from an early age.  It is for these children, and the adults that wish to pass on the glory of geekery, that I want to make this book.
kids

As a strong believer that our awesome culture must be passed on, I implore my fellow parents to support this project and encourage our community to level up, for the next generation of geeks must be prepared to inherit the Earth.  We have a responsibility and training must begin from birth, so go make it happen. These handy nursery rhymes support your child’s introduction to the world of geek, head over and show SurReal Mother Geek your love.

Even within total destruction, there is hope – Woman Finds Her Dog after the Tornado

It seems that our American cousins have yet again had to deal with another tragedy, in the form of that devastaing tornado that hit Oklahoma recently.

It was watching the news, and feeling slightly helpless, that the below video came up and despite the sadness I felt for others loss, warmed my heart.

This brave woman had lost everything that meant anything to her and had resigned herself to the loss of her dog as well….. until

This Charming Superman: The Art of Butcher Billy

Brazilian-based artist/designer Butcher Billy is a man who likes his geek imagery. From his Legion of Real Life Supervillains collection to his work on The Superhero Media Crossover Project, the vast breadth of the geek landscape is to him a vast smorgasbord of  ideas and inspiration.

One of his more recent works deals with the subject of pop-culture heroes; those men and women, singers and musicians, who are raised up beyond mere celebrity and become icons, avatars of an unspoken cause, figureheads of an emotional rebellion. It is fitting then that Billy has merged some of the more indelible personalities of the 1980s music scene with characters from DC’s Justice League. Take a look for yourself and I’ll think you’ll agree that, strange as it is to see Ian Curtis sporting the bat-cowl it’s also just a little bit…right.

Helheim#3 – 8GPP

In the frozen wilderness Rikard battles with the forces of Groa after being sent from Bera’s camp, phantom variant #3

whilst his father Kirk tracks his path of carnage determined to lay his son to

rest.

A narrative monologue begins this issue as Groa the mentioned but unseen until now enemy of Bera makes

a point of Bera’s magic being weaker than hers and relying on Rikard’s love for her to linger in his

servitude following his death rather than binding him with magics to her will.

This is a fundamental difference that comes into play this issue, as Rikard is questioning his orders to slay the hag Groa

and all who cower in her shadow ‘men….women….children’.

A brutal fight takes up several pages of this issue and playing the lumbering brute force and might of Rikard against a group of the smaller empowered warriors of Groa makes for a good contrast. A panel of the hulking Rikard trudging through the wilderness is followed by a close up of his head as he takes an arrow in the eye, only to pull it out with a look of contempt as he turns on his  opponents. It’s a great start which shows the otherwordly resilience and power of Rikard in his Draugr state.

One of the best developments in this issue is Rikard encountering a young girl called Kadlin by a lake washing her clothes, covered in wounds from the fight and clutching the severed heads of his enemies the girl’s response is ‘Might be you want to stop staring after me and come on down here to clean your wounds’.

Rikard fights it out with Groa’s demonic hunters

Rikard silhouetted at the top of a hill looks a menacing figure and there are definite shades of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein as the monstrous looking Rikard accompanies the young girl who rather than being scared sees the confusion and sorrow in the shambling draugr’s eyes and she recounts the story of the battle between the witches.

This fills in some of the details behind Groa and Bera’s rivalry with one being able to control ‘the night creatures…the demons’ whilst the other can ‘churn up the very grave soil and raise an army of…’ The cost of this rivalry is also made clear when the little girl reveals that the decimated village they are walking through is the remains of her former home and her family along with everyone else is dead.

Kadlin meets Rikard.

Meanwhile Kirk continues to track the thing that was his son across the wilderness despite Shad questioning what they’ll do if they actually find him.

Cullen Bunn (Currently writing one of Marvel’s best offerings in The Fearless Defenders) and artist Joëlle Jones, who continues to impress with some great compositions (and I am the only one who wants to see what she can do with Red Sonja?), continue to conjure up a frostbitten Norse fantasy with intelligence that should appeal to anyone with a taste for more down to earth fantasy.

#XboxReveal – Microsoft unveil the Xbox One to the World

XboxOne

The next generation console war has started today as Microsoft have announced the new Xbox One at the #XboxReveal meeting on their Redmond campus in Washington. Microsoft exec Don Mattrick introduced the console after suggesting that the living room has changed into a new and too complex entity in need of an All-in-One system with the player at the centre and a simple, instant and complete interface.

TV integration and Motion Control

The console was demonstrated live and seemingly instantly responds to player voice and motion commands via a set of universal gestures. The system is able to instantly switch between applications, games and live TV and supports snap multitasking and socially-driven TV listings which will make the console into as much of a PVR and home entertainment hub as a games console. Xbox One users can voice activate their TV using their console via a separate but included Kinect motion sensor bar.

The Power of One

The hardware features a 64-bit architecture supported by 6 Bn transistors and 8GB RAM, seemingly not too much different from the PS4 unveiled in February.  Powered by the Windows Kernel, Microsoft have also suggested that the machine features heavy integration with cloud storage and a massively improved Xbox Live architecture, adding weight to recent rumors of mandatory always-online connectivity. The controller will be an improved version of the massively popular Xbox 360 controller only with an improved D-Pad and isolated analogue stick feedback. Xbox Smartglass will also be natively supported, massively improving integration with the popular iOS, Windows Mobile and Android app.

What about me Cheevo Score?

The membership system for Live will apparently remain the same, presumably including the $60 annual Gold subscription fee, however the console will support enhanced video sharing and editing tools and an ominous-sounding new and dynamic achievements system which will depend upon how the player actually plays rather than just accomplishing specific pre-defined goals.

The Games

Oddly there weren’t actually many revealed today. Microsoft are promising more at E3 next month and 15 exclusive titles currently planned for release within the first 12 months of the console’s life cycle. EA Sports announced four sports titles in Fifa 14, Madden, NBA Live and UFC which are all being developed using the EA Sports Ignite engine designed to take advantage of Xbox One’s unique capability as well as a new version of FIFA 14 Ultimate Team which will be an exclusive to the new platform.

Microsoft Studios also announced exclusives Forza Motorsport 5 and Quantum Break, a time bending and story driven saga from the creators of Alan Wake and Max Payne and Activision premiered Xbox One in-game footage of Call of Duty: Ghosts which will include dynamic multiplayer maps and a new canine companion.

And that’s it?

Pretty much. Microsoft’s Nancy Tellem coined possibly the most cringe worthy phrase of the presentation when describing Xbox One as the “next watercooler” and the conference seemed to mostly focus on the new immersive and personalised TV and media experiences which the console will be able to provide. Halo developer 343 Studios also announced a new live action TV series based on the franchise to be produced by Stephen Spielberg but no mention was made as to whether that will be an Xbox Live exclusive series or just one being developed for a premium TV network.

Patrick and Paul will be filling the Geek Pride space shortly with their views on the announcement but I couldn’t help feeling slightly underwhelmed by the whole presentation. To be fair, presentations and conferences have never been Microsoft’s strongest point and there is no denying that the entertainment hub and social capabilities of the console look like they have potential but Microsoft may have a big job on their hands at E3 when trying to convince actual gamers that Xbox One is the new console they need under their TV later this year.

Stay with Geek Pride for regular updates and coverage of the Xbox One as news develops.  Xbox One will be released globally later in 2013. No price has yet been announced.
