PSPlus2 It’s that time of the month, where Sony have revealed the PS Plus offerings for the next month; so we at GP thought we’d pass this info on so you can decide if you want to start or renew your subscription for June or not.

PS3 Freebies

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning

A great free-roaming RPG from the creative minds of bestselling author R.A. Salvatore, Spawn creator Todd McFarlane, and Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion lead designer Ken Rolston, Kingdoms of Amalur. The quests can get a bit repetitive for you to play for the full 100 + hours this game provides but the combat is the best I’ve seen in an RPG for a long time so it’s worth getting for that alone.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning

ICO and Shadow of the Colossus HD Collection

Originally released on PS2, these action/adventure classics have been given a HD makeover and released for PS3. ICO follows a mysterious boy who has been expelled from his village to an isolated castle. Within his confines, he begins to have strange dreams of rescuing a young princess from the evil spirits that dwell within the fortress; a  great adventure game for those who like a bit of puzzle with their action.

Shadow of the Colossus

In Shadow of the Colossus you will go on a majestic journey through ancient lands to seek out and destroy gigantic mythical beasts. With your trusty horse at your side, explore the spacious lands and unearth each Colossi. Armed with your wits, a sword and a bow, use cunning and strategy to topple each behemoth! The best thing about this game is that this involves climbing up the Colossi and staying on it is no easy task.

Demon’s Souls

Demons SoulsThe hardest RPG I’ve ever played; a great game for those who fancy a challenge and don’t mind dying over and over again. It’s so hard that the network features allow players to give advice to others in the form of notes, to warn them of the dangers ahead or advise which weapon or tactic to use to defeat certain enemies.

PS Vita Freebies

Rayman Origins

Probably the best platformer on the Vita, with some great level design and lots of collectables, character unlocks etc; you’ll be hooked on this for hours at a time. Great for those who like their platforming in 2D.

Rayman Origins

Coconut Dodge Revitalised

This is an HD version of  FuturLab’s incredibly addictive mini (apparently anyway). I’ve not played this one myself but it looks like you need to dodge coconuts (if the title didn’t already give it away) and collect coins.

Happy gaming!

Desperately Seeking: Ma Cobb

Ok so I’m a little late to the party with this one, but I thought I best let myself calm down a bit before writing an article otherwise I might be a little more than grumpy on this matter.

See how grumpy I am?
See how grumpy I am?

For years fans of Firefly have wished and hoped and dreamed for merchandise and been let down by the pitiful selection of quality Firefly/Serenity merch available, so have turned to fellow fans for their assistance. Fans of the show and mums who are handy with the knitting needles have been selling Jayne Cobb style hats for years without any backlash but it turns out that fairly recently Fox, who own the rights to Firefly and therefore any affiliated product, have cracked the whip on the unlicenced selling of shiny hats in the style of Jayne Cobb’s from episode 12 “The Message”, and are sending cease and disist notices out to Etsy sellers and are working their way around the internet as one by one these shops and sellers get reported.

There are still a few ninja Ma Cobb’s out there, and for those of you that aim to misbehave, I believe sellers can still be found here and there online who make them one by one with love and care and all the comfy home-knitted warmth you would expect from a hand-knitted hat from your very own Ma Cobb, but for those of you who would prefer to buy the licenced product Ripple Junction now have the rights to mass produce the Jayne hat and I believe you can find it over at Think Geek, though the price to get it posted to the UK isn’t pretty. The upside of that is that due to an uproar from Browncoats across the world all profits are being donated to charity Can’t Stop the Serenity who donate to the worthy cause of Equality Now (http://www.equalitynow.org/ for those interested) so we can’t be too grumpy… Honest…

Game of Thrones – Season 3 – Episode 8 – Coupling

0

One thing I try very hard to do is to see beyond my privileges as a white male, and beyond what society expects of me and everyone else on the gender spectrum. When raised in normal society with abnormal personality qualities – that is to say, when you find yourself to be a geek – you tend to view those not in your half of the world with suspicion and awe, thinking them something stranger and greater than you… Not something which encourages equality or Feminist views. It took me a long time to realise how warped and unhealthy such a reliance upon the privileges and societal expectations was.

Image from http://memeoficeandfire.tumblr.com/

Sad to say, Westeros is barely in a state where the words ‘gender roles’ could be uttered without you being laughed at. Such a thing is highly representative of the way medieval society was at the time – and, if you follow the startling @EverydaySexism, frankly you’ll realise it’s dangerously close to modern society – but it makes for strange viewing when an episode basically revolves around it. Every scene bar one is about the roles of men and women in the societies it represents.

We open with the Hound as the Protector and Arya as the Daughter, as Arya is told that she will be kept safe until she’s reunited with her mother and brother at The Twins.

The Titan’s bastard, leader of a pack of mercenaries hired to fight the Mother of Dragons called the Second Sons, aggressively dominates Daenerys and Missandei during , with one standing firm and the other withdrawing with repulsion. In the same scene is the first introduction of Daario, the Seducer. As a side note, his casting is well-done, I feel.

Gendry is brought by Melisandre to Dragonstone and set up somewhere safe and warm, a Temptress of sorts (which is then further confirmed when she goes to see him). Stannis does not understand why he would be treated so well when he is to be sacrificed but Melisandre says likens Gendry to a slaughtered lamb, whose meat would spoil if it knew it were to be killed. This leads to pretty much the only scene which doesn’t involve both women as Stannis goes to see Davos down in his prison and frees the man, seeing that without Davos’ guidance his own lust for Melisandre is blinding him as he is ill at ease with the prospect of human sacrifice.

Back at their camp, the three captains of the Second Sons discuss women. Specifically, they discuss a whore the Titan has hired and Daenerys. They realise they cannot beat the Unsullied in combat, and so decide to send one of their own into her camp and kill her before any battle. They draw lots to determine who will go and Daario, who has said he wants merely to kill men who want to kill him and fuck women who want to fuck him, draws the Braavosi coin.

We then cut across to what feels like the lion-share (if you’ll excuse the pun) of the episode with Tyrion and Sansa’s wedding. This rather extended scene gives us the chance to see the reluctant bride and groom in private, and for Tyrion to falteringly attempt to make some connection of reach some understanding with his wife to be. At the Great Sept, where they are to be wed, Cersei again shows how startlingly daft she can be by explaining to Margaerey Tyrell what the Rains of Castemere really means (as though the entire realm didn’t understand the point of the song) and demand she keep her distance. A brilliant idea, all said. The wedding itself shows how Husband and Bride work in Westeros, with the husband expected to wrap a cloak around his spouse to signify how he will protect her. Joffrey’s cruelty ensures that even more of a mockery is made of this notion when Tyrion cannot reach Sansa’s shoulders and she must kneel to allow him.

Back in Dragonstone, the Temptress Melisandre meets her prey and seduces Gendry, who apparently doesn’t have an ounce of sense as he lets her strip him and fuck him. Because powerful women love to buy random young men and ship them across the world. Melisandre discusses her role as the Priestess before, the proof that the Red God is the one true God, and ties him up during before putting three leeches on the naked boy. The placement of one in particular is rather cruel. Davos and Stannis enter the room then and the leeches are removed, tossed into a fire by Stannis as Melisandre’s behest. As they burn, Stannis says three usurpers’ names; Robb Stark, Joffrey Baratheon and Balon Greyjoy.

The wedding returns and Tyrion is drunk. Very drunk. The Queen of Thorns is on form as she discusses how this and the impending marriages will make the relationships between the Tyrells and Lannisters very unusual. Tywin approaches his drunken son and orders him to follow through on the real purpose of the wedding; to consummate the wedding and put a Lannister child in Sansa, she now being little more than a baby receptacle, a bargaining chip. Sansa herself is accosted by Joffrey who threatens to rape her, being the absolute cock that he is, again showing how the man in power claims the woman.

With his appetite for cruelty whetted, Joffrey then demands that a Bedding Ceremony, in which both bride and groom as undressed by the guests and taken to their bridal bed, takes place. Tyrion refuses but Joffrey insists, leading the drunken Tyrion to threaten to cut his nephew down to size. Tywin saves the Imp from a place on the battlements, as does his own quick-thinking (and quick-drinking) and he leads Sansa away to their marital bed… where he cannot go through with his order, cannot bed a mere fourteen year old against her will. Westeros expects him, as the man, to sleep with a child. It also expects Sansa to sleep with her enemy, which she is dutifully ready to do but Tyrion says he will not make her sleep with him, will only do so when she wants to. The question of what happens if she never wants to hangs as Tyrion goes and falls asleep. Shae, the Mistress, is delighted when she checks the bed the next morning and finds it free of blood; no hymen was broken, no sex had occurred.

Daario then sneaks into Daenerys’ camp, catching her being bathed by Missandei. As a side-note, no-one should ever allow their army to have face-covering helmets and doing so is an open invitation to assassination. Daario takes Missandei hostage and tells Daenerys that he was sent to kill her but instead chose to murder his captains, whose heads he brought for her. He says he has fallen for her, that her beauty has caught him in its snare, and he swears the Second Sons to her service. The Seducer wins his prize.

Finally, we see Gilly and Samwell Tarly as they continue south with Gilly’s boy. The baby does a good job of representing the ‘female’ role between the two, remaining with Gilly whilst Sam decides on a place to stay but held by Sam when he cannot build a basic fire, which Gilly goes and does. They discuss names for the child but then realise there are dozens of crows nearby, that a White Walker is near. It has come for the child. Gilly holds it and Sam tries to fight, having his sword destroyed in the process. The only weapon he has is the Dragonglass dagger… which, when stabbed into the White Walker, turns it into ice and makes it crumble.

Couples, the two broadly-defined sexes, are the main theme and we see how narrow and restricting the roles are… and how ridiculous. The Song of Fire and Ice series has been criticised for its portrayal of male and female characters, the brutality and horror that particularly the females endure due to their gender, but again I feel it is representative of society as it was and a warning to society as it is. It did make for strange viewing in this episode, clubbing the obvious scenes together, but I guess it had to be done. The shame is that one of the best characters for defying stereotype in Brienne of Tarth was not present… but I’m sure we’ll see more of her next episode, as the weddings draw near.

Lady Death Volume 2 – 7 GPPs

0

Hope has returned after being cast out of the Under Realm, having regained some of her memories if not her powers.

To her horror she realises that her greatest wish -that her mother be released from her relentless torture in the Under Realm- has come true as it is revealed that Death Queen, despotic would-be ruler of the whole Under Realm, is Hope’s mother Marion; driven insane from years of torture and now mistress of the malign forces that once kept her prisoner.

Defeated, Hope, Wargoth, Azlando, Balthazar and Salacia flee to New Aberffraw with the help of General Belial to seek refuge from an old friend. Death Queen is quick to pursue her daughter though desperate to extinguish her life once and for all and conquer the Under Realm.

Lady Death is an undisputed icon of bad girl comics and after a rather convoluted publishing history with several different companies publishing the title, Avatar (the indie publisher known for its numerous no-holds-barred adult oriented titles) created the Boundless imprint for the relaunch of an all-new Lady Death, written by co-creator Brian Pulido and Mike Wolfer.

Lady Death has a bit of an uphill struggle on its hands, being a long-time cult title from the 90s explosion of comics- an era which has a reputation for producing some of the most shallow and crass titles in recent comics history- and Lady Death, to some, was one of the worst offenders.

 Hope and friends relax.

So how does the new Lady Death fare?

graexc_41314211_9781592911660.in05

Mike Wolfer and Brian Pulido have actually created a pretty impressive narrative full of interesting characters whose allegiances are never totally clear. Subverting normal tropes by having demons like Azlando and Salacia fighting against Death Queen’s forces make for an interesting and unpredictable story.

It’s the relationships between these characters which are key, though; when Hope and her friends arrive at New Aberffraw ,Satasha, the queen, has to decide whether to offer sanctuary to her friend Hope despite Wargoth the necromancer being in her party- one of the driving forces behind the rebellion against Death Queen whilst Hope was in exile on the mortal plane.

There’s plenty of scheming going on amongst Death Queen’s forces too, with demonic powerhouse Behemoth being manipulated by Death Queen and Tormina (Death Queen’s daughter and Hope’s half-sister) a necromancer who clearly has her own agenda, saving Behemoth from Death Queen’s magic after Hope escapes, and observing developments on both sides of the war. There’s plenty of potential for a long play in this character and it’ll be interesting to see where that goes.

It’s not all scheming though, there’s plenty of action to be had too with numerous battles both big -the siege of New Aberffraw- and small -a brutal fight between Wargoth and Behemoth- amongst others.

Hope is reunited with Valora the fallen angel.

The character designs are impressive throughout: Tormina clearly influenced by fetishistic goth fashion, Valora the fallen angel and Stigmata, Wargoth’s ex-wife, whose body is made of sentient blood which can form at will and leads to one of the better fight scenes towards the end of this volume, being the highlights.

There are numerous occasions when it wallows in its T&A stylisms a little too much- almost every character is in a perpetual state of half-nakedness, and Hope’s regular clothes from her time on Earth are quickly burned off by her mother on her return. Most fight scenes seem to come with a requisite number of gratuitous thong-clad arse shots, which really remind you of how inherently ridiculous Hope’s outfit is.

It’s a tricky balance to pull off; Lady Death’s appeal, for better or worse, is its cliched heavy metal fantasy art design, and altering this too much would alienate its fan base… but at the same time it seems anachronistic, and plays against the character work that is being set up.

Gabriel Andrade‘s art for the most part seems to fare better in the quieter scenes rather than the action: a scene of Hope’s party sat around a table at an inn is one of the best images in the book, whereas the busy scenes of the siege get a little confusing, although other fight scenes -like the bone crunching fight between Behemoth and Wargoth and Hope’s encounter with Stigmata- are well-handled.

It’s definitely an aquired taste, and no doubt there are many that see it as a worthy target for diatribes about pandering to the hormonal male market, but once you get past the thongs and the flesh there’s a pretty good fantasy story and some interesting characters.

The Charon Continuum Needs YOU!
To every struggling writer who can’t catch a break, to every artist who just needs some finished work on their portfolio, to every aspiring colourer, letterer, web developer, animator, anyone who wants to give something a go but doesn’t know what; there are stories to be told and together, as a community, we can tell them.
CC2

The Charon Continuum was set up by Dominic Archer to fulfil two objectives: to give aspiring creatives a place to show off their work, and to give sci-fi fans a brand spanking new universe to sink their teeth into. Their ambitious project aims to build an expanded universe on a par with the behemoth that is Star Wars, with not only comics, but prose, animation, art, and pretty much everything else your crazy minds can imagine.

The setting is the year 2105, where China and India have risen to become the two big world powers, and wormhole travel has just been brought to the mainstream, giving the people of Earth access to interstellar travel for the first time. From there on in, it only gets better- the full storyline is only available to contributors to avoid spoilers for the readers, but rest assured that it’s not just a vague idea and a parental shooing-out to go play in the sandbox; these guys know what they’re doing. They have Plans, and I think the capital P is justified.

Lest potential readers think that Charon Continuum will be a free-for-all of hack writing and terrible fanart, they have a commitment to putting out the best work they can- not just to make themselves look better, but also to help their creators out. If a submission is not quite up to standard, they will give you some notes on it, so you can make some changes and resubmit the work. Speaking as a writer, there is nothing more precious than feedback notes. Nothing. Too often you’re given either a “Yeah, great” or a “No thanks”, and neither of those are helpful in the least, so for that reason alone I’d urge any aspiring creatives to get in on this.

“But Laura!” you cry, gripping your monitor in both fists and screaming with foaming mouth and bloodshot eyes. “How do I get involved?” Well, first you should probably get a rabies shot, and second, you should go to the Charon Continuum website and have a look at the information pack. Then write/draw/sing/animate to your little heart’s content. And if you just want to read/watch some awesome stuff, go there anyway and just see what’s what.

Why are you even still here? Go!

Eurovision 2013

0

eurovision-2013-logo-we-are-one
Ah, the yearly event that unites the whole of Europe through song! Of course, it also unites the whole of Europe, with Internet access, into a public display of mockery, given that most of the songs featured are sub-par, some of them making me question the sanity (or tone deafness) of those that have selected the songs for the contest) For those of you in parts of the world where European business isn’t that well-known, here’s a quick rundown: Eurovision is a song contest that has been around since 1956. Each year people vote for the best song and the winning country gets to house the following year’s competition.

It’s also rife with political voting; most countries voting for their neighbours or distant linguistic cousins. If Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia or Slovenia are all in the competition, expect each country to give one another the maximum score. Same goes for France and Belgium, Ireland and England and so on and so forth. That’s how most of the things are decided, unless there actually is a really good, amazingly fantastic song that steals everyone’s hearts- but this is Eurovision so such gems are rare. Also, keep in mind that putting on a good show requires lots of money, so a poorer, smaller country has less chances to win based on that alone.

Cezar-Ouatu--gol-pe-scena--Credeai-ca-in-rochie-e-socant---Foto-

It also gave us the great gem Alcohol is Free, by Greece. It was the only song to get the audience pumping in an otherwise dull show, and it’s probably going to be a summer drinking hit. It also came up on the fifth spot and let’s face it, given everything that’s going on over in Greece, this is one of the best things happening to them. There was also a hammer-less Thor from Iceland that didn’t score that high, but hey, his hair looks better than mine and the song wasn’t half bad, so I’m not complaining.

This year’s contest was… not the best. Not from a visual stand point, mind you. Sweden did an amazing job with the sets and everything ran smoothly, however most of the songs were enough to put me to sleep and, given the late hour, some actually made me doze off once or twice, while others bordered on the brink of hilarity (my own country’s song included – when the twitter feed explodes with “castrated Dracula” posts, you know you’re in for it).

England was represented by Bonnie Tyler, something I should’ve probably opened with, however, despite the song not being horrible, it wasn’t that good either, something most people agreed with. Her voice, despite her age, still sounds like it did some decades ago, why give her _67679061_tyler2something horrible to work with? Oh, oops. Did I say horrible? I merely meant not good. I think it was the problem of the entire show. Everyone played it safe, using ballads about saving the world, about love, songs that would’ve been all the rage some place else, but not here. Is it a wonder a drinking song scored higher than most of the lulling-me-to-sleep songs of the evening? I think not. And speaking of blasts from the past (sorry Bonnie!) what was up with Anouk? I seem to remember her songs were better, but Birds did nothing for me. I was actually counting down the 3 +/- 5 seconds, hoping time would fly faster, because really, it was that dull. I wonder who voted for her since she did make it in the top 10.

Now that I spent time dismantling the show, let’s focus on what was good about last night’s show. Denmark. I know I mentioned the political vote that goes on, but this song was actually worth the first place. Perhaps the victory would’ve been sweeter if there would have been some actual competition, but even so, Emmelie de Forrest did a great job with her song Only Teardrops and I wouldn’t mind hearing it again.

Azerbaidjan, which came in second, wasn’t as good, but I have to admit that the stage performance was impressive, and for that alone I have to agree with those that voted for Farid Mammadov. Ukraine however, the proud owner of the third place, wasn’t up to par, in my opinion. From the frantic flailing of the singer who was struggling to balance herself up on a log, to the Disney-like tune she played (during which I recognized certain elements belonging to different, more famous songs) it was all a little off to me. Of course, like with most other things, music  is a matter of taste and opinion, so don’t take what I say as gospel. However, if you’re interested in hearing some of the best songs in last night’s show, here is my selection:

Emmelie-de-Forest-of-Denmark-Wins-1897870

1. Denmark – Only Teardrops

2. Hungary – Kedvesem (one of the few songs performed in the contestant’s national language)

3. Norway – I Feed You My Love

Alas, it’s a very short list. I would’ve included the Maltese Jason Mraz, but the jury is still out on his performance. It was cheery. Well, what the hell, since it’s Sunday and I should do at least one good deed today:

4. Malta – Tomorrow

All in all, last night’s Eurovision was an alternative to watching good movies, reading good books, spending time with friends or doing anything remotely interesting. It was almost hilarious to see how many people watched simply to gouge the political repercussions of the vote or to mock everything from suits and hair to shoes and songs. It’s a guilty (slightly masochistic) pleasure that only Europeans can relate to, one we all pretend we don’t have as we curl under blankets to watch the show. But have no fear, since there are about 120 million viewers of the show, you are not alone.

Here are the final results for last night’s show and last but not least, the winning song which, if you have the patience to play out all 26 songs in the final, will make a bigger impression on you than it would on its own.

 • Denmark: Emmelie de Forest, Only Teardrops – 281 points

Fandom attack!

tumblr_static_i_solemnly_swear_to__wor_ship_my_fandom__by_whodyathink-d5ddnugI’m sure that title is about as original as fandom wars are, but it serves its purpose with the same pride we have for all things geek. For those of you who don’t know(you should be ashamed and banished to the naughty corner!) a fandom is defined as follows:

Fandom (consisting of fan [fanatic] plus the suffix -dom, as in kingdom, freedom, etc.) is a term used to refer to a subculture composed of fanscharacterized by a feeling of sympathy and camaraderie with others who share a common interest. Fans typically are interested in even minor details of the object(s) of their fandom and spend a significant portion of their time and energy involved with their interest, often as a part of a social network with particular practices (a fandom); this is what differentiates “fannish” (fandom-affiliated) fans from those with only a casual interest.

Personally, I’ve  never heard the term fannish, but if it’s on Wikipedia it must exist, however this particular definition is the best I could find. Fandoms sound interesting, don’t they? They sound cool and exciting. Just think about it! There is a corner in this world where people who love the same things as you do, live, interact, get excited about everything and anything that you yourself get excited about! What’s not to like? Now that we got to this moment, we all know that I’m about to drop and anvil on your heads and tell you exactly what we’re not going to like about fandoms.

It’s shocking, it’s brutal, it’s easy to guess because let’s face it, it’s also obvious. The one thing to hate about fandoms are the fans. No, before you go on a roaring rampage of revenge for me saying that, I don’t mean everyone and anyone, I merely mean that little faction that every fandom from The Walking Dead and The Vampire Diaries to Hannibal or CSI or everything in between has, but let’s face it there are too many books/comics/series/movies to list here.

The: my *insert show/book/etc *here is better than yours!  group. They are more vocal, more fanatical, they will follow everything and anything that’s related to what they love, while also following all the other inconsequential things that exist in the world, but only to trash them by comparison. Some call them trolls, some call them heroes, but regardless of the name, they exist and thrive on making others miserable for liking the awful knock-offs of their show.

Maybe you’re into fishing shows and they like Hannibal, maybe you like ponies and they like Spongebob, but you’re still going to blip on their radar if you even mention your attraction or affiliation to anything other than their own, beloved “thing”. And once you’re there, you’ll never escape their clutches.

Don’t get me wrong, not everyone is like that. Most people are sane, safe to be around, caring and loving and when they do get involved in something fandom related it’s going to be for a charitable event, in order to help a fellow fandom member or simply to showcase their affection towards a favourite cause of someone involved with the object of their fannish affection.

Supernatural and the several events they host for charity come to mind, Misha Collins’s fans who did so much for Haiti, the Norman Reedus fans who bought his 3 Films to help Japan are just a few, off the top of my head fandom actions that have gained my appreciation for fandoms. Unrelated people gathered up to protest for a cause or another, to help save someone in need that they have never met, to honour people that would’ve remained anonymous otherwise. See? That’s the bit I love about fandoms, yet…when I see the word pop up on my screen in relation to a show/movie/book, it’s not what comes to my mind.

What I do think about is the fandom wars, the horrible slights people hurl at one another simply because they can’t accept that tastes, whether involving salting your soup before or after tasting it or revolving around the things you watch and read are non-debatable.

Having an opinion on something is fine. Posting it on your blog, on your site, on your twitter feed is just as fine. What’s not okay is going into someone’s backyard and yelling from the top of your lungs that their baby is crummy. That their hero, whether the actor/actress or the character they portray just plain…sucks. Don’t do that. It’s like going on a playground and saying “you mama” jokes. It’s a big no-no and it just goes to show how badly things can degenerate in between groups of people, it’s almost a social experiment in itself: gather a group of fans (I’m using the appropriate meaning of the word – fanatics). Add water. Watch them transform.

Now, from my experience, fandoms come with inner revolutionary movements themselves. Let’s take show/book X and do a quick analysis. You can replace the X with whatever you want and the result will be the exact same one. There are always going to be ship wars, particularly if the author was never clear on who gets the girl/boy/alternate life form. While on the surface everyone is loving and nice, the ripples just beneath the mirror of the water are what eventually will break things from within. Gale/Katniss or Peeta and Katniss? Castiel and Dean or Dean and *random gorgeous girl here*? I would go on with this, but I am afraid I will end up being the first person to discover the word limit for wordpress. But I do believe my point is made, right?

Fandoms can be great and fandoms can be horrific and just like with families or friends, all it takes is a single spark to ignite a war that will span centuries. Okay, that might be an exaggeration, since I’m sure few shows/books etc will actually survive the test of time, but given that there are still people who argue over whether Buffy should’ve chosen Spike over Angel or the other way around, I’d say we’re still looking at a few decades of quarrels at least for some of the things people focus their affection on.

The bottom line is that this should be one of  those situations where we live and let live, because let’s face it, no matter what we love or how much we love it, when push comes to shove, this is still a fictional world we’re adoring. We might jump up and down in anger over someone picking on Doctor Who, but if our house is on fire, I doubt the TARDIS will appear, however that person you just insulted just might.

36722794All in all, if your show preaches peace love and understanding, don’t go Westboro Baptists on anyone for not liking it. I’m not saying turn the other cheek, I’m not saying that you shouldn’t stand up for yourselves, but think just what you’re consuming your nervous energy on. And when you feel like going out, guns blazing and smite the offending party for picking on your favourites, remember that a sad puppy is weeping for humanity somewhere in the world.

RAMPAGE TIME!!!!!!!!!!!

So, my Borderlands obsession, it started with Mordecai. I don’t know why, normally I am not the type to go for that type of character. Normally I go for the big beefy type that runs into a battle with both hands gripping the handles of two mighty war axes, ready to cleave some skulls and shouting at people in the dragon language. Or something remotely similar to that.

I began the first game with that in mind but with this being my first ever first person shooter I decided to go with sometime different. I glanced over the first characters, a sexy woman, I didn’t know what her deal was so I skipped her, Roland just looked too boring and then I saw Brick, he looked like the type to go for but then I spied Mordecai…

When the second game came out I read up on the characters and at first was stuck between Zero (just a number) and Maya the Siren. After much deliberation (my partner was playing co-op with his BFF -n’aww- and I noticed that Zero ran like an idiot) I decided to go with Maya, I was a strong, sexy woman, tattooed and powerful! Maya’s powers were frikken’ amazing, she was sassy, sarcastic and able to take care of herself and ran around with her commando boyfriend phase-locking bandits. Yeah, I get far too into this game.

I thought nothing could beat her power- at level 52 I could kill a person with a single phase lock with no gun. I WAS AMAZING.

But then the rumours started, a murmuring between the bandits, someone epic was coming! A badass to beat all badasses. A psycho that could out-crazy all psychos. A vault hunter to out-awesome all vault hunters!!! I was kind of un-impressed at first… Nothing could beat my Siren… Could they? And then Krieg arrived. Roaring things like “BATHE IN THE MEAT CHUNKS!!!”  “THERE’S NO BBQ ‘TIL I SAY THERE’S A BBQ!!!!”  and “NIPPLE SALADS!!””  I heard his shouts and laughed like a maniac and decided to run with him. Shouting my own nonsense at the TV.

krieg4

I wasn’t expecting much from him to be honest but I liked his personality profile, his dual personalities, and the fact he had been experimented on.  Like The Joker, The Mad Hatter, Sweeney Todd, he screamed insane but also sounded like he just needed a big bear hug. This is something I like in a character.

At first all I liked about him was his random babbling but then I reached level five and I acquired the Buzz Axe Rampage skill and OHMAHGAHD! Suddenly I was unleashed upon Pandora like never before! Krieg ran into battle like a raging bull, cleaving skulls with his bloodied Buzz Axe, which was satisfying on an unquestionable level.

Krieg’s skins and heads are all awesome and named comically, showing  Krieg’s anger in their names with a constant usage of capital letters (“MY LEFT BOOB SAYS “OBS”!” “I CAN HEAR YOUR BLOOD!” “WHO THREW THAT!!!”)

krieg2

My Krieg is only around level ten. But it has been the best ten levels I have played. He is already a colossal seething mass of muscles and anger and I cannot wait to unlock his skills. I am focusing at the moment on the ‘Mania’ skill tree but may branch off into the ‘Hellborn’ skill tree; which requires a lot of setting myself on fire and every skill ends with “… WHEN YOU ARE ON FIRE!!!!”

krieg1

My interest in the ‘Blood Lust’ skill tree was minimal; I don’t really enter into the whole piling tokens up to boost stats thingy-mi-bobbies so I steered clear. I prefer the action skills that I don’t have to faff around with. So after reading each of them all I decided I wanted to be able to transform into a mutant Psycho before anything else! YAY FOR MORE ANGRYS!!!!”  So I am concentrating on this skill tree, it includes boosting my health stats and my melee attacks, which is always a plus!

So… All in all this was basically about how much I am loving my new hunk of flesh; Krieg. I just really want to give him some cuddles before running around with him exploding some bandit heads. He is an absolute blast to play and it’s well worth buying the DLC.

Why aren’t my fingers in someone’s eye sockets right now… Why aren’t my fingers in someone’s eye sockets right now… Why aren’t my fingers in someone’s eye sockets right now… Why aren’t my fingers in someone’s eye sockets right now… Why aren’t my fingers in someone’s eye sockets right now… Why aren’t my fingers in someone’s eye sockets right now…
