Geek or Geek Not: There is No Why

0

As we discussed on one of the first editions of the Geek Pride podcast, one this website’s fans ‘unfriended’ us on Facebook because we were not ‘geeky’ enough. Matt asked on what basis we weren’t considered geeky enough for this person. They replied, “You don’t talk enough about coding or computers.”

Image from tokenfemalegamer.com

To our former fan, we weren’t geeks because, and let’s be frank, this site tends to focus on pop culture such as films, comics and video games over other forms of geekery. They left, off to find something more to his taste. I hope they found a site, a Geek Coding Facebook page. I hope everyone finds something for their niche.

The point that it raised for me, and that I wish to discuss, is the concept that one cannot be a geek unless you’re interested in the things which you, yourself as Geek Judge, are interested in. I suppose this could be called Geek Snobbery. People assess one another’s choices and preferences and decide whether they are fit to what they consider to be the definition of their own social sub-type.

I believe that Geek Snobbery has come from a desire to protect what could be defined as Geek Culture from the mainstream. It’s no secret, with blockbuster movies and major TV series being made from comics and books, that what were once considered to be hidden and small parts of the world have now become completely mainstream. Now that we’re three Iron Man films deep – and, really, who could have seen that coming a decade ago – we can’t say that comic books are niche. Video Games, which were once the purview of people locked in their bedrooms – myself included, are now bigger that films.

All of this, whilst completely awesome, means that Geeks who grew up with their interests being the cause of probable bullying and minor social ostracism have now become the purview of the people who told us we were stupid and awful as kids. High school / Grammar school stuff doesn’t leave you, and on a subconscious level that people want to keep their realms for themselves. Terms like ‘hipster’ and ‘Fake Geek Girls’ are created and slung around, and the normals who have now read The Incredible Hulk comic books are separated from those who feel they’ve been a part of the Geek Culture for decades.

It is wonderful to feel like you belong, to self-identify with a group and feel akin to others. That is the point of Geek Pride as a website: pride in who and what we are. But we should not decry people who geek over things we don’t: there are Crypto geeks who love making their laptops as solid and unbreakable as possible, Disney geeks, Bronies, book geeks, trainspotters and every other possible fascination and love under the sun. They are no lesser a Geek because they don’t like to code, or don’t think Batman is the best superhero, or have never watched Anime with subtitles.

To me, the definition of Geek is simply this: someone who cares deeply enough about a subject or pastime to learn as much as they possibly can about it, and someone who finds themselves thinking about said thing in their spare time and passing moments. That is it. No requirement of not being mainstream, of capes or elves. And Geek Pride stands for anyone who has such an obsession, a love, for something which is essentially trivial.

Do not, my friends, judge a Twihard because you don’t like the material, or a Brony because ‘it’s a kid’s cartoon’ whilst you secretly still love to watch old episodes of Ghostbusters. Merely do what all good geeks do: try and introduce them to the things which you love, spread you passion, and Geek Out with your Freak Out. As it were.

Disney’s World Domination,continues

disney-marvel

Disney have become quite the global giants within the world of the geeks, as of late, and have now furthered their standings, within the geekverse, by acquiring the distribution rights previously held by Paramount Pictures for Marvel Studio’s: Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger.

I think it fair to say that this outcome was inevitable and so, as of 30th June 2013, the underterms of the deal became effective.

A statement of this announcement reads as follows:

July 2, 2013

Dear Retailer,

Please be advised that effective 6/30/2013 Marvel has acquired the distribution rights for Marvel Studio’s Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger.

To ensure a smooth transition, Paramount Home Media Distribution will continue to distribute these titles for in-line/reset placement through 8/31/2013 in domestic territories. Effective immediately, Disney will handle promotional placement of these titles with the home entertainment release of Marvel’s Iron Man 3 in domestic territories.

Paramount will continue to honor and service existing distribution obligations.

Additional details pertaining to the transition plan will be communicated over the next several weeks.

Grimm Fairy Tales Omnibus – 6GPPs

0

Professor of Literature Sela Mathers uses her book of fairy tales to help others with decisions often with undesirable consequences.

Zenescopes Grimm Fairy Tales has been a cult favourite since first appearing in 2005, taking in classic fairy tales and giving them an often disturbing or horrific modern twist and has also lead to numerous spin off titles. This new ominbus collects together the first 50 issues of the series in one rather hefty tome.

Most issues feature a framing story with Sela, with a fairy tale relating to the events of the framing story making up the majority of the narrative. These vary in length with some being single issue stories like ‘Red Riding Hood’ which features a put up on college girl being pressurised into sex by her arrogant boyfriend before losing herself in the book of fairy tales in her room and seeing herself as the titular girl of the tale before coming to a decision regarding her current situation.

Other stories have more than one part like ‘Beauty and the Beast’ which features a girl trying to escape an abusive relationship and Sela helping her with the book.

The boy who cried wolf.
The boy who cried wolf.

Putting an alternate spin on classic fairy tales whilst not being that original does provide a pretty big sandpit for the writers to play in, some of these re-interpretations are pretty disturbing and blackly comical too. You’ll never look at ‘Jack and the beanstalk’ or ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’ the same way after reading it here.

Sela’s contempt for people who seem incapable of helping themselves despite her best efforts becomes a part of the driving narrative underlying the series as it goes forward and some stories feature Sela outright punishing people like in ‘The Three Little Pigs’. Later the framing story takes on a larger part as Sela visits the land of fairytales and learns more about the power she holds.

However creator/writers Ralph Tedesco and Joe Tyler, amongst others writing, is inconsistent due to the series inherent ‘anthology’ approach and this inconsistency on a written level is equaled with some distinctly hit and miss art.

Pinocchio.
Pinocchio.

Not having a regular series artist isn’t necessarily a bad thing, the different art styles actually suits the anthology approach. However presumably due to the indie nature of the title, for every good example like Eric J and Nei Ruffino’s work on ‘The Sorcerer’s Apprentice’ there’s something truly diabolical like Claudio Sepulveda’s work on ‘Myst’.

Although there are standouts like the tale of Pinocchio which features some impressive Dave McKean-esque art from David Seiman for the fairy tale part of the story contrasting with the art of Dave Hoover on the framing story of Jacob, it’s the high point of this collection.

This constant shift in artists means there’s no real consistency in the recurring characters appearance. With Sela looking different proportion wise a lot of the time, looking like a regular woman in some issues and a top heavy porn star in others, the contrast is made more glaring due to the amount of issues on offer.

One of the more bizarre features or omissions to be more accurate here is unlike other omnibus collections this doesn’t feature any of the cover art for the issues contained within. Grimm Fairy Tales is probably more known for its often impressive pin up style cover art involving elements of fairy tale imagery, which often differ from the characters appearances in the story. So to omit these entirely from this omnibus is an odd move which probably won’t go down well with fans  .

True Blood Rant: Season 6 Episode 3

0

Faeries, kidnap and another thousand storylines we don’t give a damn about: it’s time for this week’s True Blood Rant!

The episode begins with Bill confirming what we saw in his vision last week: he saw Jessica, Eric, Tara and Pam suffer the true death in some sort of vampire holding facility. Then later there’s a fabulous scene with him facing the sun, assuming he is immune to its vampire-killing ability. Bill bursting into flames and flailing around was more humorous than anything else- maybe True Blood really is losing its touch.

true-blood-season-6-steve-newlinSo, we’ve learnt that the Gov is experimenting on vampires. When Eric kidnaps his daughter, Willa, she tells him about the ‘camp’ that he’s running. Then we get our first glimpse of the facility when Rev Newlin is captured, crying his little vampire eyes out. That fellow can’t catch a break can he? Jason stole his wife and then turned him down for vampire lovin’, then Russell went bye-bye. Now Sarah shows up to annoy him for a little while. Poor Steve.

Sookie’s moaning about her constantly being in danger. Get over it girl, you’ve just found out you’re a royal faerie and you have a countless amount of supernatural suitors. Man up.

Eric’s getting back to being angry, but that cheeky wit of his is long gone. He’s also gone rather soft, letting Willa live and even share a coffin with him, which finally makes way for saucy Eric scene. No doubt those two will get it on soon enough, especially since Sookie wants nothing to do with him any more. Surely that will piss off her daddy more than Pam’s suggestion of beheading. Especially when we learn that Momma Burrell had an affair with a vampire…

070113-eric-willa-1606131

Andy’s faerie babies have reached their teens and the police are on the lookout for wolf pup Emma. We see Alcide’s wolf bitch showing her true colours when the police come a-knocking. Warlow has massacred the faerie nightclub, which Grandpa Niall (who I’m renaming Pappa Faerie) finds. He also runs into Sookie’s new love interest (Ben) and seems to recruit him to help protect her. I’m still not sure about him, everything seems so circumstantial and he’s a halfling like Sookie… a llittle too coincidental perhaps?

true-blood-sexy-jessicaBill has found a scientist that can synthesise Sookie’s faerie blood and sends Jessica to retrieve him, and dayem girl, does she look good doing it. Bill’s attempts at retrieving Sookie are less successful though, especially when in his angry Billith state. I’m loving the nickname the Truebies have given him by the way and will be following suit.

Billith wants Sookie’s help but she won’t give him her blood, declaring he’s had more than his fair share. The conversation ends with Bill saying that she’s dead to him. See, a few series ago this would have been a big moment, totally squashing hopes of them rekindling their relationship. However, no one gives a damn any more. Especially when Sookie’s involved.

Sadly, I think that True Blood really is on the decline. There are too many plot lines which don’t hold my attention in the least, and the ones that are supposed to just don’t do the trick any more. Maybe the character cull around mid-season will bring the show back into my good books, but for now, these recaps really are rather ranty. Here’s hoping that the show picks up soon, and I think killing off one of the major characters is the way they’re going to do it. Will it work though? We’ll see soon enough. For now, I’ll finish off with the quote of the week, where we finally pay attention to something Sookie says.

Quote of the Week

Sookie: ‘You’re not God Bill, you’re just an asshole’

Play Pac-Man As An FPS

Have you ever wanted to play the cult classic Pac-Man as a different game type? How about as a First Person Shooter? Well you don’t have to dream about it anymore – it’s become a reality.

PacmanI have to say – that reality is also surprisingly creepy. I give you FPS-Man, created by briderider aka Tom Davies.

If you’re interested in this new vision of Midway’s classic 1980 munch-a-thon, you’ll need to head over to Kongregate, and get the Unity Web Player installed (if you haven’t already – it’s free and is pretty quick).

Eerie much?
Eerie much?

I had to laugh when the tags for the game were 3D, Arcade, Maze, Atmospheric and Horror… but after playing it, you can see why. The music helps to add to the creepiness, and when you start heading for a corner and you see a red glow intensifying, it develops a bit of an Alien vibe as leg it as fast as possible!

You use the WASD or Cursor keys for movement, and your mouse to look around… so don’t try and play this on a laptop with a touchpad or you’ll last about 10 seconds.

Check it out and let us know what you think!

Don Mattrickupdate

This just in, We have confirmation from Zynga that Don Mattrick is leaving Microsoft and joining the team over at Zynga.

[quote]

“Zynga announced today that Don Mattrick would be its new CEO, effective July 8. This is a great opportunity for Don, and I wish him success. Don’s directs will report to me and will continue to drive the day-to-day business as a team, particularly focused on shipping Xbox One this holiday.

Since joining IEB more than six years ago, Don and his team have accomplished much. Xbox Live members grew from 6 million to 48 million. Xbox 360 became the No. 1 selling console in North America the past two years. We introduced Kinect and have sold more than 24 million sensors. We released fantastic games, and, most importantly, we expanded Xbox to go beyond great gaming to deliver all the entertainment people want — sports, music, movies, live television and much more.

In the past month, the IEB team showed for the first time here on our Redmond campus, and again at E3, how we are going to continue to transform entertainment with Xbox One. I am incredibly proud of the work and vision culminating in Xbox One. I’m particularly excited about how Xbox pushes forward our devices and services transformation by bringing together the best of Microsoft. The consoles are incredible all-in-one devices with built-in services that consumers love, including Bing, Xbox Live, Internet Explorer, SkyDrive and Skype. And, just as important, Xbox Games, Xbox Video, Xbox Music and SmartGlass light up Windows PCs, tablets and phones.

Thank you, Don, for setting us on a path to completely redefine the entertainment industry. The strong leadership team at IEB and their teams are well positioned to deliver the next-generation entertainment console, as well as transformative entertainment experiences, long into the future.”

Is Don Mattrick Leaving Microsoft?

Is Don Mattrick leaving Microsoft for Zynga?

 xbox_one_don_mattrick_31197

Recent leaks to certain sources suggest that Don Mattrick, the head of the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft, will be leaving MS for a position as the CEO of Zynga.

After the E3 fiasco, Microsoft have been doing a lot of talking about the reshuffling of management and other positions within their interactive entertainment department and although we cannot say that Mattrick leaving is directly due to that, it does seem to fit the timeline.

As of right now this information has not been verfied by Microsoft who are not commenting at this time. It is rumoured that the announcement will come down after the Stock Market closes today. At the time the news was leaked, Zyngas stocks went up 11% while Microsoft went down by about 0.25%. We will keep you updated as news becomes available.

Orlando Bloom treats us to a sing along as he wraps on The Hobbit

0

Orlando has filmed his last scene playing Legolas. So naturally, after a hard 12 hour shoot battling an Orc, the cast and crew downed some beers and decided to treat us to this little sing along, by means of a farewell. Uploaded by Peter Jackson, Orlando sings along to the spoof video made 7 years ago – ‘They’re taking the Hobbits to Isengard’. I’ve included this further down, just in case you haven’t seen it.

Without further ado, I present to you the irresistible Orlando Bloom, still in Legolas costume:

Bioshock Creator to take on Logan’s Run

Ken Levine
Ken Levine

The mastermind behind one of the most beloved series of all-time, Ken Levine, has been drafted in to pen the script for Warner Bros. planned remake of the 70’s hit film Logan’s Run. Now for those who don’t know Logan’s run was a book co-created by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson. It’s set in the 23rd century, or to be more specific the year 2274, in a domed city  ruled by a computer, nobody was allowed to live past 30. To make sure this was adhered to all citizens were implanted with a life-clock crystal in the palm of their hand which changed colour as they were about to reach their final day.  It was one of the first dystopian future films to arrive on the silver screen.

Now Ken Levine will still continue to work on Bioshock Infinites 3 DLC’s, at least one of which will introduce a new companion character. So all fans of the series can breathe a sigh of relief about that. It is uncertain as of yet as to when the re-make will be made, it has been on the cards for a long time with Warner Bros. In fact Levine has been brought in to replace X-Men director Bryan Singer who was previously attached to the film.

A re-make has been on the cards for quite some time now with Joel Silver (Die Hard, The Matrix) being enlisted as a producer back in 2000 along with Director Skip Woods (Hitman, X-Men Origins: Wolverine). What is known about the film is that instead of the mandatory death sentence being at 30 years old, it’s back to the original 21 just like in the book itself.

Will this film ever get made? I sure hope so, especially with Ken Levine now at the helm, spearheading the screen-writing of such an amazing piece of work.
