The accomplished author, who became famous after the release of “The Hunt for Red October,” has had a total 17 novels on The New York Times Best Seller list; as well as his work spawning the Jack Ryan films. Alec Baldwin, who played Ryan in The Hunt for Red October”, has paid tribute on twitter

Sad Over Breaking Bad? Better Call Saul!

0

We know. It’s over. You’re sad. It’s understandable. But it’s okay, because AMC isn’t quite done with you yet. After the somewhat underwhelming finale (sans Aaron Paul’s tear-jerking escape) , I was left with a Heisenberg shaped hole in my heart. For the last three days since the conclusion I have for some reason become aware of how much I will miss Saul Goodman and his antics. Better Call Saul, they say. So I did. Out of curiosity I typed www.bettercallsaul.com into my browser and was filled with joy.

They only went and made a bloody website!

You did it, you glorious sunsabitches.
You did it, you glorious sunsabitches.

Clicking here will take you to Saul Goodman’s official website, replete “legal” advice, adverts  and a testimonial by the legendary Badger. Enjoy another hour or so of laughs. Also, see if you can find the heart warming easter egg in the site. And can  someone please tell Huel he can leave that room now, everything’s fine.

Stunning Fan Made Wonder Woman film – short but oh so good

0

Wonder Woman is my gal, I idolise her, collect everything I can and fight her corner left, right and centre. It is no secret over at Geek Pride towers that Warner Bros and DC’s lack of action on a film is seriously pissing me off (I had to re-write that several times because the language I originally used would make unicorns cry).

But I am not here to rant about that issue, instead let us celebrate this epic and far too short Wonder Woman live action short from Rainfall Films. Though it is just over two minutes, it was enough to give me goosebumps and cry about it being over. This is the biggest compliment I can pay to the makers and quite frankly, Rainfall Films have taken the Warner Bros stance of “It’s to tricky” and pummelled it like there’s no tomorrow.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds – Release Date and New Dungeon System

0

2537200-the-legend-of-zelda-a-link-between-worlds-2Today Nintendo have announced that The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds will be released on 22nd November on 3DS. This is the first original title for the console and is in many ways a follow-on from the SNES classic ‘A Link to the Past’ which was released in 1991.

As well as finally giving us a solid release date for the new Zelda title, the new dungeon system has also been explained for the first time. Unlike previous games in which the dungeons are approached in a particular order, after a certain point you will be able to choose in which order you tackle them. There will be a shop in which you can buy or hire the weapons or items needed for each dungeon which means that you can choose which one you go for.

This new dungeon system for A Link Between Worlds is the second new feature we’ve heard about for the upcoming title; along with Link’s ability to walk on walls, appearing as though he were a painting. Neither of the new features are exactly ground breaking or all that exciting, but I for one, am very happy to hear that the game has finally received a release date. It looks like we at Geek Pride have managed to score a review copy for the game in November, so I’ll be able to give you my verdict before it hits the shelves. Although, if you’re as much of a Zelda geek as I am, it won’t matter what anyone else says about the game. It’s gonna’ be fabulous.

Only a few months to go! jooooooooooooooyyyyyyy

The second in a trilogy of films adapting the enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit, by J.R.R. Tolkien, “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” continues the adventure of the title character Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) as he journeys with the Wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and thirteen Dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) on an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor.

With ‘38 Studios’ having closed and their assets being put up for auction (Auction Date: November 14th – 15th). The big name that everybody is looking at is ‘Kingdoms of Amalur‘. The commercially successful game made by ‘Big Huge Games‘ under the company umbrella of 38 Studios has been long overdue for a sequel.

Project Copernicus: In all it's unfinished glory
Project Copernicus: In all it’s unfinished glory

This along with an entire back-catalogue of games, including the PC strategy game ‘Rise of Nations‘ and what was meant to be the ‘first triple-A, hundred-million-dollar-plus, free to play, micro-transaction-based MMO‘ known as ‘Project Copernicus‘. Sadly, if a buyer isn’t found in this upcoming auction, all of these games will be put on the endangered species of games list.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning

I for one will be devastated if there is not another Amalur game, I really enjoyed the graphics, story-line and universe as a whole. Here is hoping that all those affected by 38 Studios closure will find new employment soon, and that their games find new homes as well.

Dexter: The Finale *SPOILERS*

0

dexter-deb-series-finale-remember-the-monstersSince the show began in 2006 I’ve been a huge Dexter fan and also an avid reader of the original novels written by Jeff Lindsay. On Sunday 22nd September, the final ever episode aired in the US, and has just finished tonight here in the UK. As much as I’m a fan of Dexter and his dark passenger, it really did feel like time for everything to wrap up. So here it is, my round-up of Series 8 and review of ‘Remember the Monsters?’

There had been rumours for the past few weeks that only one Morgan would be killed in the finale. After Deb was shot by Saxon in the penultimate episode, it looked set to be her, especially after she had just re-joined the force and started to patch up her relationship with Quinn. It also meant that we knew Dexter couldn’t just leave for Argentina once he heard about what happened. But no! The episode opens and Deb has survived the shot and all seems well, but Saxon is still on the loose. It’s enough to delay Dex and there’s still a chance that Saxon will come back to finish off what he started, so there’s little indication as to what’s going to happen to the siblings.

Dexter’s goodbye to his son Harrison when he leaves him with Hannah seems to be the ultimate hint that they won’t be reunited. Hannah is the perfect opportunity for Harrison to exit the scenario ready for Daddy is to meet his demise or end up behind bars. She may not be the best surrogate mother for him, but Harrison has always been an awkward character to have around. He made Dexter seem more normal and proved to be quite a complication when Daddy wanted to go off and strap someone to his table.

As much as I’ve never liked Deb as a character (in both the books and the TV series), I’ll admit that I began to well up when Quinn broke the news of a complication. It only got worse when the Doctor gave Dex the details about the damage to her brain and there were definitely a few tears shed in the flashback that gave the episode it’s title. I never knew I cared! I guess it also came from Dexter’s emotive response to the news about his sister. Our monster has feelings, and ultimately that’s what this final series has been about.

Episode 812We realise at this point that Dexter is definitely going to kill Saxon and he’s not going to care about covering his tracks. After all, he’s been arrested and is being held at the station. The scene between the two is a little lacking in tension, but the fact that Dex is going to openly kill him is enough to build it up. It’s also quite clear that Batista and Quinn are fully aware that this was no self defence, but cover for him anyway. As Batista urges Dexter to get going, it’s obvious that he wants him gone before it’s looked into in any more detail.

After my emotions betrayed me a little earlier on, I’m ready to admit that during the scene with Deb and Dex in the hospital as he switches off her life support, I cried like a little girl. When he calls Hannah and Harrison, it’s clear that he’s never going to see them again, which I think is the best way for the story to go. Harrison has his new mother, albeit another serial killer, but they will have a new life together. As Dexter throws his peaceful looking sister into the ocean and the sails off into the storm, that should have been it. An apt ending for our anti-hero, not wanting to cause anyone else in his life more pain.

tumblr_mtk4uyxaks1rnlqlho1_500

As Batista receives a call, answering ‘Dexter?’ there’s definitely some ambiguity there. Has Dexter called him, or has he heard about the wreckage of his boat being found? Then we see Hannah reading an article about him being presumed dead. I’m not gonna lie, the scene with Hannah and Harrison in the café just reminded me of The Dark Knight Rises. I half expected Dex to be sat across the table from her and flash a cheeky smile. Maybe Albert sipping quietly in the corner as well. As ridiculous as that would have been, at this point I was sure that he was still alive.

The credits are about to role, but oh no! Another scene. Dex is alive and working as… a lumberjack? What a stupid bloody pointless scene. I get that the creators want to clear up the ambiguity, but in my opinion it cheapened the finale. Better he blast his brains out at that final moment sat at the table in his little cabin. Okay, that’s a little much, but still. The scene wasn’t needed, the ambiguous ending would have worked better. However, Dexter has chosen exile, which to some might be a fitting ending. His voice over has gone, he’s avoiding all human contact and he looks like a shell of the man which he once was. He’s got a beard coming on though, that’s something to be happy about?

Dexter Finale

Besides that final moment, I did enjoy the finale. It was a little less action-packed than anticipated, and Saxon’s death wasn’t a little climatic. However, the idea that Dex just openly killed him in the police station was dramatic and rather fitting. In my opinion, the ending should have ended with it being unclear as to whether Dexter had died, because it was a more climatic and emotional finale. It was definitely an unexpected episode, and I was rather shocked about how emotional it was. Emotion in the show was always a rarity up until the past year and even when Rita was killed so tragically it was just brushed over. Then wham, the finale just exploded with emotion.

Ultimately, I felt that series 8 of Dexter was overall a good ending to the show. The series as a whole focused on Dexter’s ability to feel for other humans and his willingness to give up his lifestyle for those he cared about. I don’t quite feel that he truly banished his dark passenger by becoming a beardy lumberjack, and think that killing Saxon should have been it for him. Arguably, the show needed Dexter’s demise to full finish things off, but I think a sense of ambiguity would have been enough. His life is over, because he can’t live with what he’s done to those he cared about. His dark passenger ultimately caused his father, wife and sister’s death, despite his actions saving many innocent victims from meeting their own end.

I’m sad that the show is over, but it really had run it’s course and I think the finale season worked well as a closer. Yes, I think the final scene showing Dexter’s new life was unnecessary, but overall the series served it’s purpose in bringing the show to the end. There have been an awful lot of negative comments about the emotional content of the episode and the lack of action, but there wasn’t exactly much time to play around with. I think it needed the emotion and created a sense of empathy between the audience and our anti-hero. Michael C.Hall really did play the character fabulously and the rest of the cast shined throughout the final stages of the show.

I’d love to hear other viewer’s thoughts on the ending of the show, so please comment on our Facebook page or below to let me know what you thought about Dexter’s departure. Should our dark passenger of met his demise, or was it a fitting ending? Now I just need another show about a serial killer to keep me entertained… Oh wait, Hannibal! Score.

Doctor Who Minisode – Rain Gods

0

This short sequence, written by Neil Gaiman, began life as a deleted scene from “The Doctor’s Wife”. It was subsequently re-written by Mark Buckingham as a comic, featuring Amy, Rory and the Doctor, for the 2012 Doctor Who Brilliant Book. But that is not where this story ends – Neil Gaiman then re-wrote it to feature as this minisode on the Season 7 box set.

It’s a a bit of fun that gives us yet another glimpse into the married life of River and the Doctor. Their date, as we have come to expect, goes a little wrong and a plan is required. Their relationship is still something that holds my interest about Doctor Who, so this little peep pleases me muchly.

Sleepy Hollow. Off to a good start. Can it get better?

sleepy_hollow_key_artThe other day I found out that a new TV series had begun two weeks ago, centred around the tale of the Headless Horseman and Ichabod Crane, the man that had managed to “defeat” him. I was naturally curious and I decided to watch the first two episodes. While not bad, there were so many things that struck me as odd that I am sure by the end of this I’ll compile a list to showcase them all.

The tale is simple, if a little altered from other versions of Sleepy Hollow. Ichabod Crane (Tim Mison) is a soldier in George Washington’s army and in his opening scene he is fighting a masked man, with a well placed mark of an arrow on his hand. After being struck down he managed to behead the man that had been seemingly impervious to bullets, only to die and…Well, we know how people these days are incapable of picturing a world that doesn’t benefit from the latest technologies, so maybe that’s why we had a time-jump to 2013? Complete with Ichabod (much like a zombie) popping out of his, not so eternal, grave. In a scene that reminded me a lot of Johnny Depp’s Dark Shadows, the newly resurrected Ichabod discovers the future.

This is where things take a turn for the bizarre. His reaction to the new face of Sleepy Hollow is much like how I would react if my phone would go through an update. Blank face acceptance. I don’t know about you, but if I ended up 250 years in the future, after jumping out of my grave, I doubt I would be so easily acceptant of the things that surround me or of how it came to pass, and I have the added advantage of having watched enough sci-fi to (wrongly) assume I’m ready for time travel.

Scattered through the story we have witches, demons, the Death and omens of the Apocalypse, with two factions fighting one another, each claiming they are the ones that are in the right. Have I mentioned the Headless Horseman is basically Death on a Pale Horse, bringing forth the end of days by…Well, I’m not sure exactly how he’ll do it, apparently he just beheads people for reasons that are still to be determined. Maybe he has a quota to meet after being “dead” for two centuries and a half?

Despite the amount of information they struggled to fit into two episodes (we basically have a seven year old plan of stopping the evil – new-tv-shows-2013-sleepy-hollow I admire the optimism of the creators) the show isn’t all that bad. If you ignore that through two episodes they had still failed to find century appropriate clothing for Ichabod. Or a comb. Not that Tim Mison doesn’t rock his do, but his more contemporary partner – Abbie Mills (Nicole Beharie) had made a point of getting him a new outfit in the first episode. I suppose the huge death-toll (with each death more gruesome than the last) might have put a damper on their shopping spree?

Wait, have  I mentioned that, unlike in earlier adaptation, Ichabod Crane is a genius with eidetic memory? And just to trump those other guys on TV possessing such a thing (Spencer Reid, Mike Ross, Sherlock Holmes) he has it for absolutely everything: smell, sound, sight, you name it. I am starting to have a problem with this being used as a plot device, because I have a feeling they will use it to justify how he is somehow unfazed by being dead and then alive, having a witch for a wife and so on and so forth. Is it too much to ask for them to give us a plain looking character, that has average intellect and can solve crime by gut feeling alone? Yes? Is that too last century? Or how about have Abbie solve the crimes without his help? She seems clueless most of the time and gullible the rest. Again, if you have a man, claiming to be from the past, under suspicion of murder, in your precinct, freeing him and going to a cave alone with him is not the smart choice!  I am still waiting for the day in which female characters will stop being clueless sidekicks and take the spotlight. You know, without them being called bitches, as it usually happens.

All in all, Sleepy Hollow gets 3 stars for effort, but it should really focus on making certain things more believable, because so far they are expecting us to suspend disbelief to an almost absurd amount and it’s making it hard to watch.  This show needs to establish some inner logic rules and stick with them, because unless this is a world where superstition is so readily accepted that it would all make sense in context, it will just get boring after a while. I’ll be waiting for more Clancy Brown, John Cho and Orlando Jones in the next episodes, because they seem to add a spark of “sanity” to the show. Here’s the trailer, check it out, come back with your own opinions.

John Constantine Headed for NBC

0

As Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D premieres, it’s been announced a new series named ‘Constantine’ is set to appear based on the chain-smoking magus formerly of Hellblazer. The show is set to appear on NBC and will be written/ executive produced by David Goyer and Daniel Cerone.

"I'm a nasty piece of work, Chief. Ask anybody."
“I’m a nasty piece of work, Chief. Ask anybody.”

Hellblazer and its world of dark magics, demons and shady deals would be ideal for a TV series, there’s plenty of supporting characters to be found too but chances are that this new series won’t be based on critically acclaimed and long running Hellblazer, but rather John Constantine’s new home of ‘Constantine’ as part of the DC 52.

This new home -featuring a neutered John Constantine remodelled as an edgy Doctor Strange- stripping out the darkness, attitude and edginess of his former home, hasn’t gone down well with Hellblazer fans or critics as seen here and various other places around the internet.

It gets worse though.

While David Goyer isn’t new to the world of comics, being a co-writer on the Blade trilogy, Nolanverse Batman trilogy and Man of Steel amongst others; it should be noted that another TV series based on a comic Goyer was responsible for was Blade, which didn’t last long before being cancelled.

As any fan of John Constantine knows, the world he inhabits is a dark and brutal one and any TV show that has any intention of doing the character right will be just as dark. The tone of HBO’s The Wire would be a good example, a real world setting unafraid to be brutal and disturbing in its portrayal of how ugly that world can be.

Cerone’s work on The Mentalist isn’t a good omen regarding tone, with slick and glossy procedurals being completely the wrong direction.

Casting, setting and tone will be key, although anyone holding out for Constantine walking the shadowy streets of London is assuredly set for disappointment.

This is all conjecture of course; the Constantine show may well prove to be an engrossing and dark exploration of transgression, power, duty and passion, with a memorable grifter anti-hero with a talent for occultism, misdirection and sleight of hand… but I don’t like the odds.

*

In the unlikely event that Hellblazer is used a basis this is my ideal casting for some characters,

John Constantine

My choice for John Constantine would be British character actor Paul Bettany. Bettany is around the right age for prime Constantine and it’s not hard to see him in the iconic trench coat with a smouldering Silk Cut in hand. Having numerous varied roles also shows he is a versatile actor and crucially still has an everyman look.

Chas

Marshall Lancaster as Chas, Constantine’s right hand man and best/only friend. Lancaster has the elusive everyman quality but also showed a talent for both fumbling insecurity and an innate sense of what’s right and dependability as DC Chris Skelton in Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes.

Papa Midnite

Robert Wisdom as Papa Midnite. A character that matches Constantine himself in talents for manipulation and dark magics. Midnite serves his own interest rather than the forces of good or evil. Wisdom on both The Wire as Major Colvin in Prison Break as Luchero, showed a talent for characters not as obvious as they seem- much like the nebulous nature of Midnite himself.

Nergal (2)

Robert Knepper as Nergal, one of the major factors in Constantine’s life. Said to have been born in the Ancient Babylonian era before being burnt at the stake, Nergal is both demon to some and god to others. Knepper is an accomplished character actor but also has no problem portraying disturbing characters as seen in Prison Break portraying Theodore “T-Bag” Bagwell.

Ellie

Jaime Murray as Ellie. A disgraced succubus and servant of a powerful demon. Ellie is originally part of a plan to snare Constantine before becoming a friend of sorts. Murray is no stranger to playing a seductive and manipulative femme fatale as Stacie on Hustle, but also capable of portraying the dangerous as seen on Dexter with her role of Lila.

The First

Peter Serafinowicz as The First of the Fallen. Lord of Hell and a thorn in Constantine’s side. The First of the Fallen holds a grudge against Constantine for manipulating him on several occasions. Serafinowicz is capable of comedic wit and beligerent arrogance as seen in Spaced, among other comedy shows, but also has an impressive and intimidating physical presence. His memorably deep voice as utilised for Darth Maul would be fitting for the Lord of Hell.
