The Death finds Conan returning to his homeland of Cimmeria with his lover Belit; his past comes back to haunt him in the bitter and rugged landscape of his former home, and Conan finds himself faced with a tough decision.
Bêlit sees snow for the first time.
Brian Wood is the latest of several writers to tackle Conan, and this time is an adaptation of Robert E Howard’s Conan story Queen of the Black Coast. This story is of the most revered tales by Howard, as it introduces Bêlit, a fierce pirate queen feared throughout the land- and one of few memorable female characters in the Conan tales.
The Death (and the preceding volume Queen of the Black Coast) have a distinctly different approach to what has featured in Dark Horse’s Conan previously. The first of these changes is that Conan is younger than previously portrayed, with the exception of his appearance in Born on the Battlefield. It should be noted there is no definite chronology for the Conan stories- although a variety of academics and writers have created them by piecing together events from the stories. Another big difference is the art from Becky Cloonan, Vasilis Lolos and Declan Shalvey… but more on that in a moment.
One of the biggest love-it-or-hate-it changes to be found is that a lot of what happens in this volume seems completely at odds with the ‘sword and sorcery’ setting. This latest story is essentially just ‘sword’, which is really at odds with the inherent charm and fun of Conan.
Whilst adding an element of realism (there are no mysterious artifacts, revenants or other supernatural beings here) can be seen as a different approach it can also be seen as fixing something that wasn’t broken, and as the story unfolds it’s the latter rather than the former which comes to mind.
A lot of what happens here seems a lot like a clumsy attempt to fill out some story before getting to Queen of the Black Coast’s conclusion- which I won’t spoil for those who haven’t read Howard’s story.
Conan negotiates a deal.
Conan travels to his homeland and encounters a figure from his past who has been putting villages to the sword in his name, which in itself is not a bad story, although it seems
rather rushed. Aside from some family drama and some fish out of water developments for Bêlit it all seems like a non-event before the next part of the story.
The later chapters of this volume work a lot better, with Bêlit and Conan’s relationship being a core element of the story, and everything working far better than the clunky preceding chapters.
A further problem is Bêlit herself; there’s never any real sense of why her name would strike fear into hardened sailors in Wood’s adaptation. There’s never any indication that she is a fierce and dangerous warrior- unlike in Howard’s story, which really comes to the fore in the conclusion of the previous volume. This robs the character of a lot of her appeal, with this version of Bêlit definitely not living up to the description of “the wildest she-devil unhanged” .
As for the art, Becky Cloonan handles things well. despite having a style far removed from the ‘traditional Conan’ most will be familiar with (see Massimo Carnevale’s sombre brooding cover for an example of that) a highlight being a great full-page close-up of a glowering Bêlit huddled over a fire. Vasilis Lolos however doesn’t fare well at all- Conan looks both feminine and childlike in numerous panels, Bêlit -despite being so stunning she literally entrances Conan on their first meeting- often looks plain ugly and action scenes come across as a confused mess. Declan Shalvey, on the other hand, handles things impressively well; the first few pages contain a total of 20 words and yet are some the best pages in the book due to Shalvey’s composition and character design. Furthermore a double page spread of a blood soaked Conan sat resting against the door of Bêlit’s chamber aboard the Tigress, sword by his side, is another great image which evokes a great sense of atmosphere and forboding .
After years of consistency from several writers and artists, Dark Horse’s Conan is now a somewhat hit and miss affair. It’s still a decent read, but it’s just not up to the usual standard.
Thinking of buying a retro console, but not sure which one to get? Well, Hyperkin’s RetroN 5 console is coming to the UK soon, able to play nine different 8-bit and 16-bit formats: NES, SNES, Famicom, Super Famicom, Megadrive, Genesis,Gameboy, Gameboy Color and Gameboy Advance. It doesn’t just emulate them like some consoles out there- it has five slots to take the original cartridges of all of these formats. You may notice that some of the machines I listed are just regional variations of the same machine (the Genesis is the US name for the Megadrive and the Famicom is the Japanese name of the NES, for instance) but this means that there is no region locking; it will play both PAL and NTSC games.
The other advantage of buying this over an original console is that you don’t need to mod it or use a CRT TV in order to play it. With both HDMI and composite AV ports, you’ll have no trouble using this on a HD TV. The system also has shaders, which will help enhance images up to 720p and you will be able to switch the aspect ratio between 4:3 and 16:9.
It will come with a wireless controller, which uses Bluetooth technology and has modern gamepad features like a home button and LED indicators to display the player number. However, if you prefer to, you can use an original controller instead.
Other features include a save function, which can be done at any point in a game, and the console will auto-save when powered down. There is also a function which allows you to speed up or slow down your games to fit your preference.
The RetroN 5 is due to be released on 10th December 2013 and has an RRP of £90/$100/€90, which I think is very good considering its capabilities and that some of the original consoles would could cost £50 alone. This is on my Christmas wish list for sure.
Week 34 was a good week for me in League of Legends, I soared through several games playing as Blitzcrank (or Killcrank as I dubbed his build). I also dipped into Pantheon, Caitlyn and a couple of good games with Miss Fortune where I dominated mid-lane against another Blitzcrank and then Master Yi.
This week has a host of new Champions, some of which I cannot wait to play so without further ado, let’s begin:
Himerdinger: The Revered Inventor
Best Deployed As: Mid-Laner
Pros: Easy to farm with due to his turrets
Cons: Quite weak, relies heavily on his turrets
Himerdinger is an Ability Power (AP) Carry Champion, his passive ability that re-generates towers can be extremely useful in tight situations. A well placed turret can also send an enemy jungler back to base quicker than they will have anticipated also.
Morgana: The Fallen Angel
Best Deployed As: Mid-Laner
Pros: Easy to Play, Good Combo Ability Set
Cons: Hard to Master, Not Mobile
Morgana is a Utility AP Mage, with an Area-of-Effect (AoE) snare and a shield that can ignore a lot of negative effects, such as stun or fear she adds a lot in a team fight. She can be used as a good solo mid-laner but it will take time to truly master this champion, I believe there are easier ones out there this week.
Sivir: The Battle Mistress
Best Deployed As: Bottom Lane
Pros: Mobile and if you can land the spell shield, you can bully the bottom lane
Cons: She falls off in damage later in the game
As an Attack Damage (AD) Carry, you’d expect Sivir to be able to do good damage throughout the game, instead she buffs her team mates, instead of being buffed herself to do more damage. This anomaly aside, she can bully the bottom lane with a good boomerang throw and a decent spell shield that refunds Mana. This means Sivir can spend longer out in the lanes than other Champions.
Soraka: The Starchild
Best Deployed As: Ability Power (AP) Support
Pros: Very easy to play
Cons: Very low attack
Soraka is a god send in some respects and a nightmare in others. She is only a support character with very little ability to engage an enemy Champion. Though as an AD Support there are few (if any) better than her. With the ability to heal, give mana and even her Ultimate is a team-wide heal she can be a very useful Champion to have on your team. But God help you if your caught short of base with nobody to help you, Soraka only has a ranged spell that damages enemies and reduces their magic resistance but nothing that could save you in close-quarters combat.
Kennen: The Heart of the Tempest
Best Deployed As: Solo Top/Mid Laner
Pros: Not Mana Dependent, Good at Harrassing Champions, Very Mobile
Cons: Needs to be close to deal damage, relatively low health
Kennen can throw a shuriken which he can use to poke back enemy champions and an electro ball, if either of these hit you it puts a stack of lightning on the target, which you can then remove to do damage. Due to this Champion being fairly squishy he is quite difficult to play, it’s all about knowing when to fight and when to flee.
Shyvanna: The Half-Dragon
Best DeployedAs: Jungler
Pros: Very Mobile, Her Spells have no cost
Cons: Susceptible to being counter-jungled early on
Shyvanna is a Champion with very few drawbacks, as all her spells get buffed and have no cost. There is a worry that she will get ‘nerfed’ (made worse) in an upcoming update, but for the moment she is a very good jungler. She’s an AD damage/tank hybrid with a great Ultimate that turns her into a dragon.
Volibear: The Thunder’s Roar
Best Deployed As: Top Lane
Pros: Very good skill set allowing him to escape or engage on single or multiple foes
Cons: He is susceptible to ranged champions in lane such as Ashe
Volibear is a Melee Fighter Tank, good at engaging enemies and taking damage. In some rare cases I’ve witnessed him playing support but it’s not something I would recommend. However if you do play as Volibear don’t try and solo a lane against a ranged Champion, your going to have a bad time.
Zyra: Rise of the Thorns
Best Deployed As: Mid-Laner
Pros: She has a 20% cooldown reduction naturally
Cons: No escape tool, quite difficult to play properly
Zyra has several good abilities that when strung together can be extremely effective. These include a nice root spell that can be used as a poke (keep enemies at a distance), an Area-Of-Effect knock-up and when she does die you fire a thorn at someone doing more damage.
Syndra: The Dark Sovereign
Best Deployed As: Mid-Laner
Pros: Very High Damage, Strong Dueler
Cons: Isn’t very mobile
Syndra is a pure AP mid-laner, she summons orbs which you use to damage opponents, and a skillshot stun. Her Ultimate summns 6 orbs which do quite a lot of damage, especially when buffed.
Quinn & Valor: Demacia’s Wings
Best Deployed As: Attack Damage Carry, Bottom Laner
Pros: Strong Dueler, Very Mobile
Cons: Lacking in Range for an ADC, Doesn’t scale well
Quinn and Valor are an ADC who is very good at 1 v 1. She has a blind so can trade against most other ADC, her Ultimate is a great chase mechanic giving her melee and movement speed a large boost. This can also be switched to defensive, as a way to make a quick getaway.

Remember when horror films were scary, disturbing ,gave you nightmares and they had amazing practical fx before everything got watered down for mass consumption and replaced with bad CG?
Marc Schoenbach of SADIST ART DESIGNS amazing old school poster.
John D. Wagner and Brian Keene, celebrated Bram Stoker Award winning horror writer do, that’s why they’re wanting to make a film of Keene’s celebrated opus ‘The Cage’. In order to avoid jumping through hoops and changing x,y, or z just because some suit doesn’t like it they need help though.
The Cage tells the story of just another night at Big Bill’s Electronics where several employees are closing up for the night when they get a visit from a man with a shotgun which turns out to be far from the worst part of their evening.
A cast has been assembled with experience in numerous horror films of varying budgets including Zach Gilligan (Gremlins, Hatchet 3), Megan Duffy (Maniac), Hannah Fierman (V/H/S, The Unwanted), Samantha Hahn (Blood Night The legend of Mary Hatchet) and more besides.
Director Wagner, producer Brian James Fitzpatrick, and the Director of Photography Chad Courtney are used to working on small budget productions and the sacrifices it requires with 18 hour days and sharing one hotel room par for the course.
Practical FX will be handled by the Emmy nominated Jeremy Selenfriend of Monster in my Closet with credits for Boardwalk Empire, The Amazing Spiderman 2, Men in Black 3, Chernobyl Diaries and many more.
Keene himself had this to say,
‘I’m thrilled with the screenplay and excited by the team that’s been assembled. It’s always a daunting prospect when your work is adapted by others for another medium, but I have absolute confidence and belief in this project and the people involved. I can’t wait to see it!”
Whilst Director John D. Wagner noted,
“Myself and everyone involved feel a great responsibility to do this intense, mind bender of a film “right”. Not just for ourselves, but for all the different groups of fans out there who expect us to do good by them. There’s no stunt casting, no gimmicks. Just good, talented folks who are thrilled to be doing this movie.”

Joffrey Baratheon’s best (and worst) moments
Game of Thrones is set to return to our screens in 2014, and with Season Four of the show being one of the most hotly anticipated TV events of the year, it’s time to look back at some of the best (and worst) moments of the King of Westeros, Joffrey Baratheon.
His purely evil behaviour makes the King perhaps one of the most compelling villains in TV history, as audiences are constantly unsure of what he will do next. From torturing Sansa to running to his mother, Joffrey has entertained us for several years, and hopefully will continue to in 2014.
Killing our hero
If one thing was for sure, it was that Ned Stark was going to save the day. He could’ve done too, if it wasn’t for that pesky King. After promising to Sansa and his mother, Cersai, that he would send Ned to live out his life on The Wall, Joffrey instead committed Ned to death by beheading.
After Sansa witnessed her father die (luckily, Arya was protected from the sight), he then forced her to look at her fathers disembodied head on a spike – and so his torture of Sansa truly began.
Beating the whores
In the world of Game of Thrones, hiring a couple of prostitutes for your nephew’s birthday is considered a thoughtful and appropriate gift, so that is exactly what beloved character Tyrion did for Joffrey on his name day.
Unfortunately for the two ladies, Joffrey did not see the kindness in this gift, and went about forcing the prostitutes to torture one another for an unknown amount of time. While death didn’t ensue for any characters in this particular scene, it is one of the most brutal and difficult of the show, and was played perfectly by the actor Jack Gleeson.
The hand of the King
Tyrion, who is perhaps one of Game of Thrones most popular characters, is one of the few people in Westeros to actually speak out against the tyranny of Joffrey. When Joffrey causes his people to riot and attack the royal family, he is the first to point out Joffrey’s mistakes.
One of the most satisfying moments of the show was seeing Tyrion slap Joffrey for his irresponsible and arrogant behaviour. Thankfully, Round Games have created a game in which you can recreate this moment for yourself, and you can slap the King to your heart’s content!
In the last few days news broke of a death happening in Springfield and as always with news like this, rumours are running wild. The Simpsons’ producer Al Jean has revealed that a main character will be killed off in the latest season. The reveal, which was announced during a conference promoting the 25th season of the show, means that many characters could be in danger. It has been 14 years since a character has died on The Simpsons with the last casualty being Maud Flanders.
Jean gave one clue saying ‘I’ll give you a clue that the actor playing the character won an Emmy for playing that character, but I won’t say who it is’. In other shows this would be of great help, however nearly all of the actors of the main characters in The Simpsons have won Emmys for their voice work. Based on this clue the list has been somewhat narrowed down and includes:
Barney Grumble (3/1) Comic Book Guy (3/1) Edna Krabappel (4/1) Sideshow Bob (5/1) Apu Nahasapeemapetilon (6/1) Moe Szylak (6/1) Krusty the Clown (8/1) Chief Wiggum (12/1) Carl Carlson (16/1) Cletus (25/1)
And we musn’t forget the main family themselves: Grandpa Simpson (with odds of 5/2) Lisa Simpson (100/1) Marge Simpson (150/1) Bart Simpson (150/1) Homer Simpson (200/1)
Personally I know who my bets are on (Grandpa if you were wondering), but who do you think is being written out of the show? Also, is anyone else shocked that there’s been 25 seasons?!
The Wii U has been in dire need of some outstanding first party releases in order to boost unit sales; there have been a few decent ones recently but none have had a huge impact and Nintendo fans have been left wanting. Only a new Mario or Zelda title would really do what needs to be done and now we have one. Well… it’s actually an old one with an HD makeover but it’s better than nothing.
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker was a GameCube title, released back in 2002. It had some bold new features, not seen in previous games in the series; some of which, didn’t go down that well with some fans (I’ll get back to that later). Although it wasn’t as celebrated as much as Ocarina of Time, it was still a game vital to the Zelda series. I can see why this was chosen to be remade for the Wii U; it’s graphical style has helped it age very well.Due to the GameCube version having functionality using a second screen( it had connectivity with the Game Boy Advance as an optional extra), it was perfect for use with the GamePad.
Most HD remakes are nothing more than a graphical update on the original title, but TWW HD goes a bit further than that. Let’s have a look at some of the new features this version has:
Remastered Graphics in HD
The biggest feature is obviously the graphical update; the resolution has been upgraded to 1080p and other improvements, such as new lighting effects and textures have also been added. I have to say it looks pretty amazing; the graphics hold up better today than any other HD remake I’ve played. It uses a cell-shaded style, giving it a cartoon-like quality. I thought this was great but it put some fans off the GC version, as they perceived it as an indication that that the series was dumbing down so it could appeal to younger and more casual players. They were wrong though and it’s proved to be a style, which appears to age much better than a more “realistic” one.
“I look good, I mean… really good. “
GamePad Features
As I said before, the original version had some connectivity with a second screen; players could use the GBA to act as the screen for the Tingle Tuner as an in-game item. This could be used to display dungeon maps and also order bomb-support in certain situations. This has however been pulled out of the Wii U version, which surprised me a bit as it could have worked pretty well, especially with the touch-screen capability of the GamePad. I also thought that some of the combat or the musical sections may have used the touch screen but they unfortunately don’t.
Instead, they’ve made the game more user friendly rather than using it for such gimmickry. The GamePad is now used to display the menu screens, so browsing the inventory or viewing the map is so much easier now and touch-screen controls have been incorporated into these; you can drag and drop items to assign them to the control buttons and zoom in and out of maps. The first person view modes are also controlled by the GamePad gyroscope so you can look around you using it. This others more precise aiming when using items such as the hookshoot, bow and pictobox.
where does he keep all this stuff?
Also, it can also be played solely on the GamePad, meaning you can still get your Zelda fix when someone else is using the TV. The drawbacks are that the resolution is lower and you will need to pause in order to browse through the menus so I wouldn’t recommend playing like this all the time but it’s a handy feature all the same.
Online Features
Now you can send and receive messages to the Miiverse via a message in a bottle. You can use the pictobox to take a screen-shot and send it via the bottle, with a comment to share with others online. Bottles can be found washed up on the shores of some locations; these can contain pictures, tips or other messages sent by other players. It doesn’t really add anything to the gameplay but it’s not a bad feature to bring the game up-to-date a bit.
shut it, beaky
Improvements to Sailing
Sailing is a big part of the game and was another feature which wasn’t received that well on the GC version. It was great to have something a bit different to just a mass of land and some horse-riding and it also added much more of a free-roaming element to it. The problem was though, in practice it was pretty dull. The boat was slow and you were required to use the Wind Waker conductor’s baton to play a song, in order to change the wind direction to the one you needed to sail in; as you had to change course quite regularly, this was something you needed to do a lot and became annoying very quickly. Also, the game forced you to travel around various islands, looking for essential items, for long periods of time between the main story quests; it was certainly my least favourite part of the game.
However, Nintendo have improved this element by adding a new item, known as the “Swift Sail.” Not only does this allow you to travel faster by sea, you no longer need to change the wind direction, making the sailing a more pleasant experience; you can also switch back to the normal sail at any time, which helps on shorter journeys. However, it’s an item you need to both buy and complete a mini-game to get. I didn’t find any in-game advice on how to get it, so I had to look it up online and I’d played through at least half of the game with the normal, slower sail, before I acquired it.
It’s not just the speed though, it’s the length of time you need to spend sailing in-between story quests and dungeons. This part has been improved slightly (which I’ll get to shortly), but not that much. I spent several hours at a time, not doing much but sailing and didn’t feel I was progressing in the game that much during this time.
Let’s hope this feature improves… sales…
Hero Mode
For those who are masters of the Zelda games, or have completed it and want to add a greater challenge, then Hero mode may be for you. It’s essentially just a higher difficulty mode but not only are enemies harder to beat, your health doesn’t regenerate until you either acquire a piece of heart or a find a fairy. I think that this a great feature as the combat on “Normal” mode isn’t that difficult; I didn’t die once, throughout the play-through; however, I think the challenge really comes from the puzzles and finding the enemy’s weaknesses.
Gameplay Tweaks and Streamlining
There are also a few, more subtle tweaks; like faster scrolling text, better camera controls and improvements to the swing mechanic, but some of the quests have also been altered or taken out to make the experience more enjoyable. I noticed this particularly when collecting the Tri-force shards near the end of the game; on the GC version you needed to collect a chart for each of the eight pieces, which involved completing fairly challenging puzzles or long, convoluted side-quests, getting the chart, paying to get it deciphered and then searching for the shard in the sea. This was quite an arduous task but now there are only three charts to find; the other five Tri-force shards are now obtained where you used to be just given the charts. This helps cut down down on the sailing a bit; it still takes several hours to do but it does take the pain out of it somewhat.
I HAVE THE POWAAAAAAAAAA
The Core Game
So now I’ve told you all about the new features, let me tell you a little bit about the core game, in case you’ve never played TWW before; Firstly, it’s probably got the most charm of any of the series, in my opinion. The cartoon style is a big part of that as it really brings the characters’ personality out; Link’s facial animations really help him be more expressive than ever. There is also a whole array of quirky new characters, some with really funny dialogue ( even one of the very minor ones is unforgettable to me; that’s the kid with a constant giant drop of snot hanging from his nose – brilliant!) The boat has even been personified as a talking Viking dragon vessel, who not only takes you across the seas but also gives you advice and informs you of the next task. There are new enemies as well as classic ones; all look a bit too cute to kill.
I think I’ve told you enough about how great it looks, but I can tall you that it sounds pretty good too. There are many of the classic songs and sound effects from the series as well as some original ones; all of which are great and will probably have you humming along to them.
Nice hat, fairy boy.
The puzzles are great as always; the thing I love about Zelda and Nintendo’s games in general is how well thought out they are; the design is impeccable. Even though you are free to explore the map at any-time and there’s so much to do, you can only access certain things when the game wants you to, there’s not really any short-cuts. There are also lots of optional puzzles, enabling you to unlock secrets too. What I like about the dungeons in this game in particular, is there are a couple, where you are accompanied by an AI controlled character, who you can command and work with to complete fairly complex problems. In short, it’s all very solid and most importantly, always fun.
All of the usual items are there, the bow, boomarang and grappling hook, but one is exclusive to TWW, the Deku Leaf; this can be used to glide through the air when reaching far away platforms and can also use wind to gain height.
The only thing I didn’t like that much, aside from the long sailing quests of course, is the controls can be a bit on the fiddly side, particularly when trying to perform third-person actions as I found the accuracy a bit tricky in this view with some and certain items, like the mirror shield were ready difficult to control when trying to reflect light from it and on to other objects or enemies. Also, the targeting button could occasionally be a bit infuriating, especially when confronted by multiple enemies; sometimes I found myself better off not targeting at all.
Front flip: for style!
The game is pretty big and although you could probably complete it within 20 hours, if you stick with the story quests you wouldn’t really get the most out of it and also you may not find the last few quests as easy without taking the time to collect extra hearts and special items. This game really needs exploring and taking time over so I’m sure you could get many more hours game-time out of this, and Hero mode may give you a reason to replay it in addition to the features unlocked on a second playthrough.
weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Conclusion
It may not be a brand new Zelda game, but it’s both a beautiful and fun game and with the new features, it’s been brought bang up-to-date. It should keep you busy while you wait for Link’s next adventure . If you’ve never played TWW before, you must play this; if you have, I’m sure you’ll have fun revisiting it and may even be blown away by the visuals as much as you were 11 years ago.
Edgar Wright today gave geeks the world over reason to make Twitter explode, by posting an update on the social networking site that reveals that Ant Man has finally started pre-production.
We’ve been waiting and waiting for the first news of Ant Man filming since we saw the blurry test footage that Wright filmed ages ago (check the bottom of this post to see a snippet of it), and what we received was the following glorious tweet:
Now I’m back in LA, it’s high time to finish a little something I’ve been working on… pic.twitter.com/ko3u1q45C4

There’s been a lot of speculation about Hank Pym’s adventures, and with The Avengers: Age Of Ultron appearing on Marvel‘s forthcoming roster, a lot of us initially thought that we’d see Hank incorporated into the movie somewhere – this was not to be, with Ultron’s origin story taking a step away from his comicbook origins at the hands of Pym.
This has had mixed opinions, and with wide speculation that the job of creating Ultron may fall into the lap of Tony Stark instead.
Anyway Ultron aside, I’m looking forward to seeing Ant Man. I was impressed with the brief test footage that Edgar Wright shot, and looking at the contents of the photo above, the style set in that footage has continued, which is great.
Now all we need is a teaser trailer! On Captain America: The Winter Soldier perhaps? We’ll keep you posted as soon as we get more information.
Whilst Guillermo Del Toro’s take on Justice League Dark may be in limbo for the foreseeable future, someone else is planning on bringing DC’s fringe characters to life, Victor Omar and Trevir Krainik of Happy Reaper Productions.
Brian ‘Smitty’ Smith as John Constantine.
The team at Happy Reaper want to create ‘Justice League Dark: The Gathering’. A story which features immortal seer Madame Xanadu gathering together a group of individuals accustomed to magic, the things that dwell in the dark places and the occult . The reason for this gathering is to rescue Boston Brand aka Deadman from the clutches of Rama Kushna a vengeful goddess.
Alongside Madame Xanadu and Deadman, Justice League Dark: The Gathering will feature chain smoking magus John Constantine, magic wielder Zatanna and the enigmatic Phantom Stranger.
Happy Reaper Productions are working with OFFTHEWIRE Studios in order to make things look and feel as good as they possibly can.
