Neo Geo X Update – Tommo Responds To Termination

0

Last Friday we told you that the license agreement between Tommo Inc. and SNK  Playmore USA Corp had been terminated. Well, Tommo have now responded to SNK’s press release, regarding this and say that the termination is unjustified as no terms of the agreement have been breached by them. Earlier this year, the agreement was extended until 2016 and Tommo expects this to be honoured by all parties.  They state that they intend to continue to produce and sell the Neo Geo X and all related products.

We still don’t know the reason SNK decided to terminate the agreement and they haven’t retracted the press release as yet. I’ll certainly be keeping an ear out for further developments on this story and I’ll let you know:

Here is the full story from Tommo’s website:

Worldwide publisher and manufacturer of games and accessories continues to support and distribute NEOGEO X

Los Angeles, Calif. – October 7, 2013 – Tommo, Inc., today responded to the press release that appeared on the SNK PLAYMORE USA Corp website last week. Tommo, Inc. denies that any breach of contract exists in their agreement with SNK PLAYMORE USA Corp and are continuing to support and market the popular NEOGEO X GOLDentertainment system, its accessories, and games. Due to the popularity of the system, Tommo and SNK extended the agreement earlier this year until 2016. Tommo fully expects this agreement to be honored by all parties. To date, Tommo has performed all of its obligations under its license agreement with SNK and is disappointed by SNK’s sudden and unjustified termination of the agreement. Tommo has demanded that SNK retract its press release and any attempts to terminate the license agreement.

“Tommo is still taking care of all customer service and product warranties in North America as are our master distribution partners, Success in Asia and Blaze in Europe,” said Jonathan Wan, CEO of Tommo, Inc.. “We’re continuing to sell NEOGEO X products, including the NEOGEO X GOLD System, Arcade Stick, MEGA PACK Volume 1 and Classics Volumes 1-5. The license agreement which allows Tommo to sell and market these products remains in effect.”

Dark Souls 2, Assassin’s Creed IV To be Shown at Play Expo This Weekend

Geek Pride will be returning to Play Expo in Manchester this weekend to experience the most diverse gaming expo in the country, and bring you the latest previews for some of the most anticipated releases over the next few months. Last year we brought you previews of Nintendo’s Wii-U, DMC: Devil May Cry, Metal Gear Solid Revengeance and more; and this year the lineup of next gen titles is even more impressive.

 gp1

Possibly the biggest news for next-gen console fans is that the PlayStation 4 itself will be at the show; over a month before its release. The PS4 will be part of the Ubisoft stand, previewing their new entry into the highly successful Assassin’s Creed franchise; Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag, over a month before the PS4’s market release.

In current gen news, yet equally as exciting; Namco Bandai’s Dark Souls 2 will also be playable over the weekend. The long awaited sequel to the infuriatingly difficult cult hit Dark Souls is one of the most anticipated titles of 2014, and you can look forward to a full write-up of our experience with the game ahead of its March 2014 release.

 g2

Nintendo will also make a return to the show after a particularly strong show last year, where fans were queuing across the hall to preview the Wii-U before it went on sale. This year they will be showcasing a range of  upcoming titles on the Wii-U and DS; on the Wii-U will be Super Mario 3D World and Sonic Lost World, and for the Nintendo DS; we will have Zelda: Link Between Worlds and the highly anticipated Pokemon X and Y, among more.

One thing everyone will be looking forward to testing for themselves is the one and only Oculus Rift. This virtual reality headset, still in development, will be shown to all who want a taste of what’s been dubbed the future of gaming; a peripheral that that managed to raise over $2.4 million in crowd funding alone.

 gp3

Of course, Play Expo being the most diverse gaming expo in the country, there’ll be plenty more to see and do than the above. In the Pro.play area, fighting, FPS and even Minecraft pro gaming tournaments are scheduled across both days, and in the re.play section, one can find a myriad of retro consoles, classic arcade and pinball machines (free to play, of course), and even a LAN area, holding multiplayer games of old school Quake games and more.

And if all that somehow wasn’t enough tickle your tastebuds, the Cos.play area might just do it for you, where Play Expo and HYPER JAPAN have worked together to offer one lucky cosplayer the chance to win win an all expenses paid trip to Japan to represent the UK in the World Cosplay Summit, no less!

Stay tuned over the weekend as we show you the latest news, reviews and previews at Britain’s most diverse gaming expo, and for anyone going, keep an eye out for the GP mascot!

Terraria 1.2 Review

0

Terraria is an odd one to quantify for the uninitiated. You can easily fall into the trap of describing the art style first which is unashamedly retro and harks back to 8-bit platformers like Treasure Island Dizzy and Castelvania. But the gameplay is so far removed from these formative puzzle platformers it’s probably best to gloss over this similarity. I’m going to go out on a limb here and call this game “next-gen”! Or at least, the gameplay is next-gen. It is shooting for those thoroughly modern things like “emergent gameplay” and “player created content.” If you like the freeform nature of the gameplay in something like (oh, to pick a purely random game out of thin air) GTA5 – you will understand where Terraria is coming from.

terraria-screenshot-1

Yes, you jump across a landscape on a 2D plain. But that’s where the similarity to traditional platformers ends. From the ground up this game is build to be a giant play-pit where gamers drop in and try to survive. Rising from the doldrums with only a couple of wooden tools and a dream, to finally dominating and shaping the landscape to your liking. How you go about doing this is entirely up to you. In fact, you can chose not to do it! Sit around a camp fire singing songs with friends if you want. It’s valid!

Still, even a sandbox game needs goals for the players and Terraria’s achievement system is primarily loot based. You can up your health and mana bars but most of the new abilities you acquire come via the items you find. This is actually a fairly refreshing take on loot progression – in that the items effect the game mechanics. The ability to double jump, run at breakneck speed, grapple to high ledges, all these things are as a result of items equipped to your character. It’s a nice change from the purely passive progression of something like armour (which is certainly in there too). Weapons also have extreme, and often bizarre, effects associated with them and there’s an insane amount of choice so you can pick a combat style to suit. There are bosses to beat too, which add further tangible goals to shoot for.

terraria

But the point of doing all this is where Terraria really excels – through combat, exploration and mining you bring back the materials you find in order to better terraform the landscape and build your home away from home. From sprawling villages, to remote outposts, to fortified castles in the sky. What ever your imagination can conjure up, really. It’s this link between achievement and creativity that fuels a game like Terraria – and is a key component of most sandbox games. Your activity in the game allows you to alter and shape your world in some fashion. The allure of this process is obvious from the success of games like Minecraft. Gamers like to get creative and the Terraria devs know this.

So, why review Terraria now? Well, this is another modern phenomenon that a timely review of Terraria allows me to touch upon. The game was for all intents and purposes “dead”, until the developers deciding to add another huge update recently. DLC and the constant patches of MMOs have led to a weird situation where we expect certain types of games to be constantly evolving after release. There’s now a fluid development paradigm where gamers are involved well before the release of games and the poor developers are accused of abandoning their game if development doesn’t continue well after the game ships. Why can’t we be satisfied with a game that is static – particularly a game like Terraria, which touts its sandbox nature up-front?

Not sure what the answer is, and a review probably isn’t the best place to discuss it, but in the case of Terraria there probably needs to be more stuff to discover on an ongoing basis. Chris Roberts (talking about his crowd funded space sim) spoke recently about his surprise in discovering that the majority of players cited exploration as the key thing they’d like to do in his new sandbox game – and I’ve found playing Terraria with friends it’s the thing we do together most often. And exploration requires a constant stream of new content to discover.

So, it’s a double edged sword for the devs of successful games that they’re now expected to constantly update these games that we love, but a boon for players who get free stuff every few months! We’ve yet to see if Terraria will receive further content in the future – but now is definitely the time to give this indie gem a whirl! And for best results, do it with friends 🙂

If you build it, they will come.

Slasher Saturdays – Psycho

Slasher Saturdays

I am obligated to say that there will be spoilers ahead, but as I am going to be talking about one of the most important, well-known and culturally significant films ever made, I doubt the necessity of such a proclamation. As a matter of fact, if you have not seen Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho then you really have no business being a film geek. If you have not seen the movie, go and do it right now. It’s all right, I’ll wait.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=57c22Yjemjk

When discussing the Slasher movie there is one film which is always brought up as an early prototype. As I have argued over the last couple of weeks, maybe it is not the very first slasher film, but it is certainly one of the earliest thrillers to encompass many of the more prominent slasher themes.

psychoFor starters there is the actual act of slashing. I would argue that there is no murder scene in the history of cinema more famous than the shower scene of Psycho. It is quite simply a triumphant piece of film-making art, a collection of dozens of individual pieces of celluloid to create a two minute sequence that has haunted the imagination of the movie lover for over fifty years.

There are two key reasons as to why this particular scene is so important in the context of the slasher movie. The first is the idea of the murder scene as the centre piece of the whole picture, something which the slasher genre would come to be known for. Secondly, and somewhat ironically given the excesses for which slashers would eventually become famous, is the understated subtlety of the act. So much has been written and discussed of the fact that despite the brutal butchery of a young woman in the shower being depicted, we the audience never once see the knife penetrate the flesh. This imagery is placed in our minds as a result of clever cutting and editing. This is something which we will encounter again when we discuss other early slashers like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Halloween.

Psycho timeJust as crucial to the later slasher film is the plot itself, a mystery involving a traumatic past event which acts as a trigger to the bloodshed. Psycho was fortunate in many ways to have been directed by a man who is not only revered as the master of suspense, but also an obsessive perfectionist. After creating this film of sometimes unbearable suspense and intrigue, Hitchcock bought up as many copies of the original book by Robert Bloch so as to protect the twist ending. Moreover, he created a tremendous cinematic event by instructing cinemas not to admit patrons to a screening of Psycho once the film had actually started. You couldn’t be late, otherwise you would miss all the crucial details, a marketing scheme which worked wonders for the film’s box office as word spread about an unmissable piece of cinema.

And there are yet more archetypal slasher elements to this masterpiece. There is the creeping suspense of knowing that the murderer can strike at any moment, thanks to a less graphic but just as shocking second murder scene. Then of course comes the ending, which teases resolution to the trauma, but then overtly implies with great unease that even though the film is over, the horror may have only just begun. In this case Hitchcock created a slasher trope by accident, for he never meant for there to be a sequel to Psycho, but the numerous great slashers which would end with hints of more to come like Halloween, Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street, all followed the example which he set.

psycho-anthony-perkins-as-norman-bates

Psycho is indeed notable for being the first film which we can say for absolute certain is a forerunner of the slasher. Or is it?

Hitchcock’s masterpiece was not the only slasher prototype released in 1960. Next week we will examine another great work from that year, one which compared to Psycho was unfairly and unfavourably overlooked and reviled for years, as we continue to explore this great genre right here on Geek Pride, in Slasher Saturdays!

The Boondock Saints comic makes its digital debut!

0

20130930-124708

ComiXology has launched the comic based on the cult hit movie, in digital format, making it available for every type of device. For the fans of the franchise, this is a blessing, considering how long awaited new material linked to the Saints has been. After a decade of waiting for All Saints Days to be made and released, having the comic readily available at our fingertips is pretty much the cherry on top.

Here’s a snippet from the press release for the launching event that took place on the 30th of September:

[box_light]

September 30th, 2013 – New York, NY – ComiXology – the revolutionary cloud-based digital comics platform – announced today that the comic book series based on Troy Duffy’s cult-hit The Boondock Saints and published by 12-Gauge Comics is now available across comiXology’s entire platform via iPhone, iPad, Android, Kindle Fire, Windows 8 and the Web. The digital comic debut coincides with the nationwide Blu-Ray release of The Boondock Saints II: Director’s Cut on October 1st.

The franchise continues to thrive worldwide in popularity each year with an ever-growing fan base, so extending the brand into the world of graphic novels was the next logical step.  Fully intertwined with the film series and written by The Boondock Saints creator/writer/director Troy Duffy and comic scribe J.B. Love, the comics follow the further adventures of the MacManus Brothers and their mysterious father and “Original Saint,” Il Duce.

“I’m thrilled to have The Boondock Saints comics come to comiXology because they capture all of the exciting, intense, and poignant moments of The Boondock Saints with their cool Guided View reading experience,” said Saints creator, Troy Duffy.  “ComiXology really has a cinematic way of presenting comics.”

With stunning art by Toby Cypress (Batman: Bloodborne, Rodd Racer), Guus Floor, and Chris Brunner (Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight, Loose Ends), the comics have been met with universal praise by the fans, and 12-Gauge publisher Keven Gardner is ready to take the series to a wider audience than ever before.

“Working with Troy Duffy and this great group of creators has been an amazing experience,” said 12-Gauge publisher Keven Gardner, “and by partnering with comiXology we’ll be able to get these new stories in front of Boondock fans all over the world.”

“We’re really excited to have comics from the original creator of the cult-classic movie The Boondock Saints on comiXology and this speaks volumes about the eclectic and ever-growing library of comics available all-day everyday on our platform,” said Chip Mosher comiXology’s VP of Communication & Marketing. “Now The Boondock Saints fans worldwide will be able read these new adventures on comiXology’s platform.”

Comics already available include “The Lost Gig,” starring the beloved character Rocco and the MacManus brothers in a lost scene from the original The Boondock Saints film, as well as the 6-issue “In Nomine Patris” saga, which is the perfect companion to The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day film. Conceived as a “deleted and extended sequence,” the comic series expands on the story and characters from the sequel and delves deeper into the secret origin of Il Duce.

With over 40,000 comics and graphic novels from more than 75 publishers, comiXology offers the widest selection of English language digital comics in the world. ComiXology’s availability across the iPhone, iPad, Android, Kindle Fire, Windows 8 and the Web makes it the best digital platform for newly interested, current and lapsed comic and graphic novel fans worldwide.*

As a reader of the comic, I can promise it will make your day and help you with the Boondock Saints cravings that are bound to happen, from time to time, to all fans.

The OneUps: Exclusive Interview

William Reyes: Guitarist/Co-manager
William Reyes: Guitarist/Co-manager
Recently I had the pleasure to interview William C. Reyes, the guitarist and co-manager of the extraordinary Video Game Cover Band ‘The OneUps‘ in an exclusive Geek-Pride interview:

You’ve been around now for 13 years since your inception, was there ever a time in the first few years before your first album (Volume 1) in 2005, that you thought you wouldn’t make it?

William Reyes: To be perfectly honest, we’ve never thought of making it at all. We merely perform and record for fun while trying to receive a very modest financial gain. We always saw this as not only a fun musical outlet, but a great way to work with other musicians with the possibility of meeting new people everywhere we go!

The OneUp's at MAGfest
The OneUp’s at MAGfest
Your latest gig was at this years MAGfest in January, do you have any plans of going on tour soon? If so have you thought of where you might go next?

WR: We have toyed with the idea of touring many times. We’ve only done one tour, and it was alongside Danimal Cannon, brentalfloss and Random Encounter. If we were to do it again, we would either do it along the east coast or a smaller tour around the midwest. We would love to do a European tour.

If you are not planning on touring in the near future are you already working on a new album? Obviously your latest album has only just come out last September (Intergalactic Continuum) but nobody can control when or where creativity will strike

WR: We are always working on a new album it seems. haha.

300x300

I see from Mustin’s interview with RetroCollect last year, the one thing he would change about gaming history is the cross-overs. Sonic/Mario games, Snake appearing in Smash Bros etc. Is this the same view held by the entire band? Or is there something else as a whole that you wish you could change?

WR: I couldn’t speak for the entire band because I’m sure it is divided. In my personal opinion, the one thing I would change about the history of the gaming industry is to have had more educational games. Video games are not only great fun, but can have so much influence that one can learn the name of every character, every place and even the name of every weapon in some cases. Now imagine that all of the characters were historical figures, actual places on Earth and facts that pertain to our world. Other factors would of course contribute to the overall level of entertainment from each game, but the player would automatically learn without realizing it. I have always thought that video games could be the most potentially powerful and perhaps necessary learning tool on the planet.

Anamanguchi were hired to do the Scott Pilgrim game’s soundtrack, if possible is there a game or even game franchise that you would like to be a part of, or that your music would be perfect for?

WR: Toe Jam and Earl games, if they make more..

Your music is certainly a break from the Heavy Metal/Rock bands that usually appear where Video-Game bands are concerned, what would you say your biggest musical influences were outside of Video-Games themselves?

WR The list of influences contains over 100 names, but a few are: Jamiroquai, Daft Punk, Parliament, Tom Jobim, James Brown, Hall and Oats, Player, Primus, Jerry Goldsmith, Bjork, Nine Inch Nails, Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley, The Bee Gees, Kool and the Gang…

Are there any of your peers that you get along with really well or would love to collaborate with in the future?

WR: We are very fortunate to have so many peers that we all get along with and we would love to collaborate with many of them. It’s just a matter of making it happen. The most recent collaboration will be with brentalfloss at Nerdapalooza this October!

TheOneUps

I see through the feature that Escapist Magazine’s did about yourselves that the band started when yourself and Nathan McLeod (Saxophonist) talked about playing Super Mario Kart music in a band. Yet you’re Super Mario Kart album only came to fruition ten years after the bands inception. Did you want the first album to be worked on with every band member having creative input on it?

WR: Well, it was Mustin, William and Nathan who all talked about the possibility of playing the song: “Koopa Beach.” Every album has been a collaboration of the minds of all the members.

oneups_mk_2
Where do you see yourselves in the future?

WR: In the future we hope to have been more places, met more people and have more recordings available to the public!

What would you attribute your success to? What is it do you feel that separates you from other Video-Game based bands?

WR: Any success we’ve had has come from hard work. When the band started, Mustin worked very hard to make sure the band was noticed and he succeeded. As old members left and new members joined, we’ve continuously worked towards becoming better musicians and pushing the envelope of arranging video game music.

Free Film Friday – The Men Who Invented Cinema

Lumiere Brothers - Picture of themI’m going to be really geeky this week. I do try to find films in the public domain that are not only interesting but also entertaining, and maybe this week I’ll fail you on the latter, but how can I pass up the opportunity to discuss the very origins of cinema?

Auguste and Louis Lumière are revered as the men whose work formed the genesis of film as we know it. In 1895 The Lumière brothers perfected the cinematograph, the first film camera, and after patenting the invention they set about using it to create the first films ever recorded.

MoonNow I did say that this feature may be lacking in entertainment value this week, and for that I do apologize. But purely and simply, these shorts are absolutely fascinating to someone as obsessed with cinema as I am. The events depicted are mundane; workers leaving a factory, a group of men playing cards, builders knocking down a wall. The first motion pictures were cases of the Lumière brothers simply pointing a camera at something occurring and documenting it. In essence what we see here is a test run for the medium of film, and it would indeed only be a few short years later that Georges Méliès would advance on the techniques of the Lumière brothers and create cinematic depictions of magic and illusion, culminating the classic A Trip To The Moon.

Having said all that, however, there are glimpses of growth even in these prototypes. A comedic sketch is performed for the camera in which a man waters his garden, and a mischievous prankster steps on his hose. It’s the classic routine, the gardener looking at his sputtering hose and prompting the jokester to take his foot off, unleashing a blast of water into his victim’s face. So simple, and yet so significant. Forget The Great Train Robbery, which I discussed in the very first Free Film Friday, this right here is the first film with a narrative plot. How about that? Comedy is the oldest film genre.

L'Arrivée_d'un_train_en_gare_de_La_CiotatSpeaking of The Great Train Robbery, I discussed how the closing gunshot had cinema-goers diving for cover. Well the exact same thing happened when that train came barreling down towards the Lumière’s camera. It was the 3D of it’s time, and indeed the very first cinematic jump scare.

I make no bones about it, I love things like this. Archetypes which have a tremendous charm in their naive, tentative but crucially adventurous nature. Take a moment, indeed six minutes, to have a look at these ground-breaking pieces of film and marvel at how far we’ve come. Every film that you have ever enjoyed can be traced back to these works and their enormously influential creators.

Neo Geo X License Terminated

0

arnold-schwarzenegger-the-terminator

The Neo Geo X console, which emulated Neo Geo AES games, is to be discontinued due the termination of the license and distribution agreement between its manufacturers, TOMMO Inc, and the copyright holders, SNK Playmore. Not only that, but they have demanded that the Neo Geo X Arcade Stick is taken off the shelves altogether.

Being an owner of this console I am sad that this will mean that there will be no more game releases; leaving a total library of 36 games, including the 20 which were pre-loaded on to the machine. But I’m not that surprised at this news. It was a poorly made machine; possibly in breach of trading standards, with firmware updates causing more harm than good and a warranty of only 90 days. It wasn’t cheap either and left a lot of consumers -mainly collectors of retro gaming hardware and software- dissatisfied. The news is still a shame regardless.

Here’s the notice taken from the SNK Playmore website, which also lists all the products affected:

– NEOGEO X Classics Vol. 5

Upon termination of the License and Distribution Agreement, SNK has demanded that TOMMO Inc. immediately cease any and all manufacturing, distribution, marketing & promotion and selling of the Licensed Products.

In addition, SNK has demanded TOMMO immediately cease all sales of the “SNK NEOGEO X Arcade Stick” product being sold separately from the NEOGEO X GOLD Plug and Play Console, and remove the “SNK NEOGEO X Arcade Stick” product from store shelves and online retailers. In order to protect our intellectual property rights such as “NEOGEO” and “SNK”, decisive measures will be taken against all unapproved NEOGEO X products not subject to the License Agreement.

Regarding customer support for any/all of the Licensed Products, please contact the retail store / online retailer from which the product(s) were purchased.
