Disney acquires full rights to future Indiana Jones films

0

indyWhen Disney bought up Lucasfilm they gained the rights to Star Wars, but didn’t show an interest in getting full rights to Indiana Jones included within the package. Although there has been much speculations about a Indiana Jones 5 – this is mostly fuelled by a certain Harrison Ford saying he wants another crack at the whip, Disney’s lack of interested made it seem like it was never going to happen.

Alas there is now a glint of hope as Disney have changed their mind and done a deal with Paramount for the full rights for any future Indiana Jones movies. Paramount are to retain the rights to the previous Indy films and Disney gain any the rights to market & distribute new movies in the franchise, with Paramount to have financial participation on any future films that are produced and released.

Surely this move by Disney means they are planning another film – or even better a reboot of the franchise. They acquired Lucasfilm for the pricely sum of $4 billion so they want to get their money’s worth out of it. As yet there is no confirmation of a script or writers but sources indicate that Spielberg would be interested in taking the helm but will only commit once the story has been hashed out.

Let’s face it Harrison Ford will always be our Indy, but there comes a time that we have to accept it is time for new blood, time for a new generation or we’re going to end up with another Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Stay away Shia LaBeouf, there is just something about that guy that winds me up.

What do you think? Are you excited for a Indy 5 or think they should reboot the franchise?

New Terminator series headed for small screen.

0

It has been confirmed that along with the upcoming film from Skydance Productions and Annapurna Pictures, there’s going to a new Terminator TV show.

This isn’t the first time that the rise of the machines will be featured on the small screen. Fox’s Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles featured Lena Headey (now known for

James Cameron's seminal sci-fi classic.
James Cameron’s seminal sci-fi classic.

her role as Cersei Lannister on HBO’s Game of Thrones) as Sarah Connor and Firefly alumni Summer Glau as a Terminator sent back through time to protect a teen John Connor played by Thomas Dekker.

This new show will tie in with the upcoming reboot of the franchise in 2015.

The series is set to be written and produced by writers Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller. The writers of the film, Laeta Kalogridis and Patrick Lussier, are set to serve as executive producers on the show.

The Terminator franchise is one of the most recognisible and lucrative in film. James Cameron’s seminal 80’s sci-fi film is partly set in a nightmarish future world. A future where machines have nearly wiped out humanity after Skynet, an artificial intelligence programme, became self aware and considered humanity a threat. The film made a star out of the then unknown Arnold Schwarzenegger. In recent years though the franchise has suffered a misfiring reboot in 2009’s ‘Terminator Salvation’ which featured Christian Bale as John Connor.

Geek Pride: Cosplay Charity Calendar

0

banner

This September we embarked on a mission (set up by our wonderful editor KThulu) to bring you a truly unique cosplay calendar, created by and featuring the Geek Pride writers and contributors, alongside guest artists who donated their artwork to the calendar. Well thanks to you amazing lot, we managed to make this dream a reality! We set up an indiegogo campaign a few months back to help us raise funds for the cause. Working off the basis of our £1000 target, we have been able to keep the calendar printing costs down thanks to the wonderful people at Bamford Print, which means that even with achieving our target we can raise around £750.00 for Cancer Research UK! We actually managed to raise £1145 which means we were able to donate even more!  It doesn’t stop there though…

We are selling these calendars to raise funds for Cancer Research UK, you can purchase the calenders through storenvy, for £15 all of which will be donated to Cancer Rearch UK! The reason we chose to donate all proceeds instead of keeping them to ourselves is because cancer has affected almost every single one of us, whether that be family or friends that have suffered, or even ourselves. We feel that this is a worthy cause and would love to make as many pennies for them as humanly possible.

Rejoice Family Guy Fans – Brian is back!

0

wallpapers-te-gustan-los-simpsons-futurama-y-family-guy-taringa

As predicted the dead don’t stay dead for long and Brian will be back with his family pretty soon.  December 15th to be exact in an episode titled ‘Christmas Guy’ with the description  “Stewie devises a master plan to get the one and only thing he wants for Christmas.”

Further to that EW report that  Brian will continue to play a role in the show, citing a Maya Rudolph episode set to air next fall, where Brian takes up jogging to impress Rudolph’s character.

When Family Guy killed of the one of the shows best loved characters there was fan uproar. Brian, voiced by creator Seth Macfarlane, is a fan favourite and his relationship with Stewie being one of the best elements of the show.

When he was hit by a car and died in the heartbreaking episode that aired on the 25th November the internet mourned. Petitions were set up to have him return and I read many declarations saying they had broke the show.

images

The family introduced new dog Vinnie – voiced by Tony Sirico – when Stewie was unable to fix his time machine to rescue his best friend, as a way to help the youngest move on. “We thought it could be a fun way to shake things up,” executive producer Steve Callaghan said of the decision to off Brian. “As soon as this idea came up, we started talking about what the next couple episodes could be and we got very excited about the way this change will affect the family dynamics and the characters.”

As shocking as Brian’s death was many suspected it to be a temporary state and I am thankful they were right, Brian and Stewie are what keep me with the show they are the intelligent element in a host of stupidity. And whilst chicken fights and evil monkees entertain me, Brian and Stewie have a special place in my heart. Welcome back Brian!

Hugh Jackman might not be Wolverine for much longer interview reveals

0
Hugh Jackman Wolverine no more?
Hugh Jackman Wolverine no more?

Just days after ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ being announced as part of a deal from Simon Kinberg, writer and producer of the upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past, to create an X themed ‘Marvel style’ cinematic universe it’s been revealed that Hugh Jackman is having doubts about returning to the role of Logan aka Wolverine.

In an interview to the promote the DVD/Blu-ray release of ‘The Wolverine’ Jackman said,

‘I don’t know whether or not I will do this next movie, I am really proud of this movie and I am excited to develop something with [The Wolverine director] Jim Mangold from the beginning because that is a great ride. That’s exciting, to see what we come up with but I have a very high expectation of what it would need to be [for me to star in it] and if it doesn’t reach those, I won’t be doing it.’

It’s early days though as Jackman also said

“No there is not [a script in place],” “but Jim Mangold and I were literally on the phone last night talking about ideas but there is no script and no writer yet so it’s a way off.”

Which raises a potential problem for Fox, Hugh Jackman has portrayed the essentially immortal canadian with the adamantium claws since Bryan Singer’s X-Men in 2000 and

for many is the lynchpin and face of Fox’s X films.

With another 3 films set to potentially feature Wolverine, X-Men: Apocalypse, the upcoming X-Force and the aforementioned third Wolverine centred film Jackman, who ages in real time unlike Wolverine, might not be interested in several more years in the role.

synthetic-HIV

Gene Therapy made significant advances in the treatment of HIV.

Some of you might not be old to remember when HIV started to run rampant back in the 80’s, but you do know what it is and why it is so devastating to an individual who receives a diagnosis. It has traditionally been treated in order to prevent the spreading of the virus, but we haven’t been able to actually cure it yet. Recently studies have been conducted in the area of gene therapy to try and eradicate the viral DNA.

In 2007 scientists modified Cre Recombinase to target the DNA that had been added to the human genome by HIV. This was named Tre Recombinase. In the most recent study, it proved to remove the viral DNA without causing toxicity to the cells. It also showed the potential to fight off the DNA that is lying dormant in the latent reservoir. This is a huge breakthrough in the medical community. This could lead to viable options for HIV patients as well as lead to discoveries in other immune system related illnesses. hominids1

300,000 year old humans? How about 400,000!?

Evolution is an extremely popular debate right now. Growing up I just assumed that is was common knowledge that we had evolved from other species throughout the history of the universe. It wasn’t until I was in high school that I realized there were other theories running around( I still stand by evolution as a reasonable explanation for our existence on this planet though). Recently it was discovered that hominids could possibly be older than was originally thought, maybe confirming evolution to an even higher degree.

At a fossil dig site in Spain, archeologists have recovered several skeletons that have been dated at 300,000 years ago. This past week though, an archeologist recovered a femur that threw everyone off; the german geneticists working on the dating process were able to rebuild the mitochondrial DNA and date it very accurately. This lead to a result that showed the particular species of hominid was around approximately 400,000 years ago. This discovery is incredible, even more so since the skeleton hadn’t been preserved by permafrost (like the majority of them that we have been using to get answers). It will be interesting to see where this discovery takes us and what new theories are born from it. To learn more about the process follow this link. http://www.iflscience.com/plants-and-animals/scientists-sequence-dna-400000-year-old-ancient-human

Koala

Koala bears have two sets of vocal cords.

Every species has strange mating rituals right? Well koalas are no different from other mammals. Males live separately from groups of females but create this strange deep resonating sound to attract a mate when it’s time. Zoologists have been baffled by this sound in past due to how deep it is. Koalas are too small to create such a deep sound. Recently scientists have disected ten male koalas to study the anatomy and try to figure out why they can make these sounds. They discovered a second set of vocal cords that are longer and heavier than the primary vocal cords. Similar to a whale actually, but to discover this on a land mammal is still pretty cool. And kinda’ metal. To learn more and to hear the mating call these little guys create, follow this link. http://www.iflscience.com/plants-and-animals/second-set-vocal-cords-discovered-koalas

LungTissue

Viable lung tissue has been developed using stem cells.

Stem cell research: very controversial but is also very useful. Most recently amazing developments have occurred in the area of creating viable human tissue ( like last week, where I reported the development of human skin to be used for burn victims). This week it’s lung tissue for transplant patients. With a transplant failure rate of about 90%, our current treatments are simply not viable enough; the 10 year survival rate is only 28%. With the process of developing lung tissue from embryonic and induced pluripotent stem cells, scientists have literally grown new lungs. This will lead to the opportunity to eliminate cellular rejection in transplant cases.I’m  pretty stoked on the idea of this; can you imagine what else they will do with these amazing discoveries? Maybe some day we will see people waiting for their new organs to grow rather than waiting for a possible match to expire. Every day around 20 people die waiting for a transplant to become available, while approximately 75 are added daily. These odds are not in the patients favor. Hopefully more lives will be saved from this research. Read more here, http://www.iflscience.com/health-and-medicine/stem-cells-converted-lung-tissue

Science is the most popular word in 2013.

According to Merriam-Webster dictionary, Science was the most researched word this year. Not much to really report on this, but I thought it was a fun little fact. The complete article can be found here, http://www.merriam-webster.com/info/2013words.htm

This concludes this weeks Science Round Up. If there are certain things in science you would like to see more of, feel free to contact me and make suggestions for the coming weeks articles.

Mike’s Magic Reviews : The Theros Holiday Box

0

Today I excitedly opened a box like a kid at Christmas. Which was incredibly appropriate; It was the Holiday Box : Theros Edition

The Theros Holiday Box

Contents: BOX, Stickers, Dividers, 4x Theros Boosters, 25x Land Cards

Yummy.
Yummy.

Initial thoughts:

The box is very pretty; prettier than last year’s blue Ravnica affair.  The front image is fairly badass thanks to the diligent work of Eric Deschamps; His image of a triumphant Elspeth is truly a sight to behold. This (I believe) is a much overlooked asset of the Magic The Gathering franchise, the artwork of the actual cards themselves are usually a damn sight more succinct and clever than we as users give credit for and the box art is testament to this fact. Everything inside the box was in order, the dividers made of a solid plastic, the boosters were undamaged and everything seemed rosy. This would make a great gift, as it has room for a hefty 2000 cards (or about 15 deck boxes).

Much pretty, Much badass.
Much pretty, Much badass.

Play Test:

Aside from using it as frisbee (which it utterly sucks at), you can’t really play test it, but I showed it to my girlfriend who stated that ” It’s all about greek mythology and shit! and it’s green, I like green! ” So there’s that.  It would also make a great gift for the upcoming festivities for a Magic player of any skill level.

Great Against:

Having a magic player in your life that has loads of cards? Dunno’ what you’re gonna’ get ‘um? Holiday Box. Wanna’ treat yourself with a cost effective storage solution for your trading card game by WOTC? Holiday Box. Wanna’ take the outer cardboard bit and wear is as a sort of mask? Holiday Box.

Sucks against:

Not a lot really. Maybe if your kid has asked for the Xbone, Piss4,  or the next fandangled “oh look it’s got an LCD touchscreen, who cares it’s a toaster, RAAAAAAH CONSUMERISM” gadget for the next generation of hip tweens, and you present them with what is essentially cardboard and foil, they will probably be less than impressed. But then of course you have to face the fact that you have failed as a parent and given creedance to the demands of the tiny hooligan that you raised that way. For shame.

Pictured: Your terrible parenting.
Pictured: Your terrible parenting.

Room For Improvement:

I’m aware that this could have been a one off, and that it could only happen to me, but I’m tasked with reviewing what arrived through my front door. With this in mind I must admit the box itself was somewhat on the shabby side. One of the sides had split, leaving the lid of the box way too big for itself and the outer sleeve was damaged (before I wore it as a mask, mind). The sticker pack inside was also bent and had a crease in the middle; this would make the actual application of the said stickers difficult to say the least. This was a real shame, as aside from this my only other room for improvement would’ve been the addition of extra dividers.

Happy Christmanukazastice, everyone!

Doctor Who the Card Game

Designers – Martin Wallace
Number of Players – 3 to 4
Publisher – Cubicle 7 and Treefrog Games

Straight to the point A solid enough game with gorgeous artwork, but just seems a bit too long for what feels like a filler game.

Grab your sonic screwdriver and tune up the Tardis, it’s the Doctor Who the Card Game! Published by Cubicle 7 and Treefrog Games and licensed from the BBC, the DrWhoCG has a lot to live up to. Just in time for the Christmas special, lets get to it Whovians!

First thing you’ll see when you crack open the box is the quality of both the artwork and the components. Each image is bright and vivid and printed on good quality card stock. The images themselves feature all the favourites from the Matt Smith era, with the man himself, Amy Pond, Rory and River Song, plus a slew of iconic gadgets and baddies to keep the avid fan-bod most pleased! The art is in a weird kind of ‘oil painting’ style, which I can’t figure out; it’s either incredibly good brush work or cleverly computer-fiddled photos. It doesn’t matter because it works, and certainly gives the game excellent visual appeal.

It’s a lovely looking game to be sure!

But great artwork does not make a great game. A quick dive into the rulebook and all seemed well at first. But after a few play throughs a few cracks began to show. First, a brief look at the rules.

The game features four types of cards: Defenders, Enemies, Support and Location. Locations are played down in front of the player, giving both ‘Time points’ (explained later) and will score points based on the number of disks in the top right corner; you score these points only if you control the Location however (more on this below). Support cards have a one off function (for example, the sonic screwdriver lets you look at what face-down enemy cards are attacking a Location). Finally, the Enemies and Defenders are used to take control of opponents’ Locations and to protect your own respectively.

An example of a Defender and Locations, plus tokens.

During the course of a turn, a player has a list of available Actions they can perform, including play a card, place Defender cards next to one of their Locations, play Enemy cards against an opposing Location or draw extra cards by spending those Time Points I mentioned earlier. Defenders and Enemies are always placed facedown. A player can keep taking as many Actions as they like, with only one stipulation; the player must have three cards left in hand by the end of the turn. These are then passed to the player BEFORE them in the turn order (i.e. you pass the cards backwards!), then draw two new cards and play passes to the next player.

The other side of the game is the Combat. When a Location has both Defenders and Enemies a showdown ensues! Players reveal all the cards on both sides, then compare the scores in the top left; the side with the highest score wins! If it’s the Defenders, all the cards in the combat are discarded and the owning player places a Tardis counter on the Location (the Tardis acts like a shield, automatically defeating the next Enemy card played against this Location). If the Enemies win, the player who sent them gets to place a Dalek counter on the Location; they now control it and score victory points for it at the end of the game. However, this doesn’t stop the Defender playing more cards in later turns to try and turf the Enemies out, so all is not lost!

To win the game, you count up the Victory points on all Locations you control, both those in front of you or held by Enemy cards you have played against opponents. The player with the most wins!

This guy is in alot of trouble!

Initially, the passing cards backwards was very confusing but made perfect sense after a few turns as it prevented a player having too few cards in hand when their turn came round, and meant players had fresh cards each turn. That said, even with this refresh there were several turns where I felt I had no real options; my Defenders weren’t strong enough to turn away the Enemies on my Locations, or I didn’t have enough of a certain type of card to make playing them worthwhile; this wasn’t helped by the rule that states you can’t use more than one of the same Defender card at a Location, but you can use multiples of the same Enemy. In the end, unless you drew a certain Support card or defended the same Location over multiple turns, it was incredibly difficult to regain control of lost Locations.

Something else I wasn’t keen on was that the card rules weren’t actually on the cards. Several require looking up for clarification or expansion. This is only a minor concern and certainly isn’t enough to stop play, since it does show the designer has gone to lengths to keep the game clear, but can slow things down unless you know the extra rules text by heart.

I also encountered some confusion during the End Game process. It is clear in the rulebook what needs to happen, but I don’t think I could ever puzzle my way through this without re-reading the rulebook every time. There’s also a way to effectively repeat an Action every turn, so in theory the game could last forever. A minor rules niggle, but enough to make me scratch my head and wonder how this was missed during playtesting.

All in all, the experience could be best described as ‘meh’. I enjoyed it for a while, but quickly found I had less and less to do each turn as I ran out of powerful enough cards and was passed terrible hands from the next player. With a game length of just over an hour for four players, the overall feeling was a filler game stretched into a full one. If the play time could be shortened to between 30-45 minutes, I’d be much more tempted to pick this up again.

Red Phone Box overseer Salomé Jones answers a few questions

0

The Kickstarter funded Red Phone Box from Ghostwoods Books tells the interconnected tales of numerous characters. The one thing they have in common is a red phone box in the heart of London.

A collaborative effort from over twenty contributors including acclaimed writer Warren Ellis, the project was overseen by writer Tim Dedopulos and editor Salomé Jones.

With Red Phone Box being published recently (it’s available anywhere books are sold, try your local book store they’ll appreciate it) Salomé shared some insights about the creative process and managing a project with so many contributors.

Where did you come up with the idea for the book, was it always intended to be an anthology?

I moved to London three years ago. The neighbourhood I moved into is home to a lot of red telephone boxes. On a walk one day I saw my first one up close, and I was

Editor and project overseer Salomé Jones.

immediately drawn to it. Got inside. Had someone take a photo. There’s just something about them. It was still stuck in my head when I wrote the first story, ‘What  a Little Moonlight Can Do’, which is now chapter two of the book.

I was looking for a collaborative project when I wrote that first story. What I really wanted to make happen was that other writers would chain off my story and make something novel-like. Have you ever played Exquisite Corpse, that writing game where each person writes two sentences and passes it to the next person who can only read the two sentences that came right before his or hers ? I saw it as like that, except with whole stories. A novel made out of stories, which is actually a literary form, but usually it’s written by one person. I wanted it to be written by many. It seemed like a fun challenge at the time.

How did you go about getting so many different contributors for Red Phone Box?

The first dozen or so writers found me. A couple I knew in real life, but most of them were just readers of my blog or Twitter. Something about the phone box or the first story, or maybe the concept behind the project must have struck a chord with people. But then, I went out and asked people to join in. It didn’t hurt that Warren Ellis blogged about the series. This was a couple of years ago when his blog was a daily thing. I’m not sure where they all came from. Out of the woodwork. I feel very lucky to have found them. They’re an amazing bunch of people. Some of them have become quite good friends, even though we’re miles apart in the physical world.

Kickstarter and crowdfunding has been behind some great things recently but many a great project has failed too, were you surprised by the amount of support you received?

I am, as a rule, terrified of failure. We prepared for the Kickstarter for about a year before launch. I really had to believe that we wouldn’t fail in order to do it. But yes, I was stunned about the amount of support we received. There’s another great group of people, the backers.  People can be so supportive when it comes to creative projects, but you have to put the right project in front of them at the right time, I think. And there were also the people who helped make it a success. Warren Ellis and Ben Templesmith. Lovely gentlemen.

Some of the many contributors. Left to right, Front row: David Church Rodriguez, Tamsyn H. Kennedy, Joe Silber, Kate Harrad, Joff Brown; Back row: James 'Grim' Desborough, Tim Dedopulos, Salome Jones, Chris Bissette
Some of the many contributors. Left to right, Front row: David Church Rodriguez, Tamsyn H. Kennedy, Joe Silber, Kate Harrad, Joff Brown; Back row: James ‘Grim’ Desborough, Tim Dedopulos, Salome Jones, Chris Bissette

Having over 20 different contributors working on the project must have taken some organisation, did you have any problems along the way?

We had surprisingly few problems. Mostly because we worked so hard on it. The stories that I hoped would sync up all by themselves had to be herded like cats in order to make a collective novel out of them. But it was worth it, I think. It’s not a perfect book, but it is rather amazing. The fact that 28 people wrote whatever they wanted, pretty much, is the reason why there are so many characters and interwoven plot lines. I actually think that’s one of the best things about it. There were a few issues with copyright clearance. Some things we tried to get permission to use and failed, so in the end, I drew a very clean line and took out anything that even remotely seemed to hint at another copyrighted piece of work. I think in doing so I managed to annoy some of the writers, but it’s much better to be safe than to be sued, is my feeling.

Generally, though, I have felt them all with me all the way. We had each other’s backs and I look forward to working with the team again.

Now that Red Phone Box is on the shelf for people to buy, what’s next for Ghostwoods Books?

We have a few other projects in the works. Up next is an anthology of Lovecraftian stories with the working title ‘Cthulhu Lives!’. We’ve had some pretty good stuff submitted for it, including something by John Reppion.

We’re looking for some new, unique projects. It’s difficult to come up with something like ‘Red Phone Box.’ It’s not the kind of book you manage to put together every day. We are planning on a sequel, though, in which the catastrophe that led to the dire future will be solved. Or, if Gethin Lynes has his way, everybody will die.
