Colin Farrell’s top 10 films

There are a lot of blockbuster films coming out in 2014, and many of them are already generating significant buzz. However, trailers and information are also coming out lately for a lesser-known film, “Winter’s Tale,” that looks very intriguing to say the least.

The film stars Colin Farrell as Peter Lake, a mysterious thief with the gift of reincarnation who falls in love with a wealthy, off-limits heiress. The film also stars Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly, Will Smith, and Downton Abbey‘s Jessica Brown Findlay, and looks to be a mystical and beautiful tale spanning historical periods.

But what the film also brings to mind is the constant debate over Colin Farrell—is he a bona fide star or an overrated box office draw? To help settle this, and in anticipation of “Winter’s Tale,” we thought we’d take a look back at his top-10 films. And in doing so, we believe that, despite atrocities like “Alexander,” it’s clear that Farrell has done some truly fine work.

10. The Imaginarium Of Dr. Parnassus

Alongside Johnny Depp and Jude Law, Farrell jumped in on this whimsical, imaginative project in memory of friend Heath Ledger. Ledger passed away half way through filming, and the way in which his friends helped to salvage the project is admirable.

9. Miami Vice

While not perfect, this is an underrated take on the “Miami Vice” story, featuring Farrell as Sonny Crockett and Jamie Foxx as Ricardo Tubbs.

8. Fright Night

The amusing re-make to the popular “vampire next door” story, “Fright Night” was surprisingly enjoyable, and Farrell was simply delightful as the vampire Jerry.

7. Ondine

Few saw this small-scale fairy tale of a project, but no matter, because Farrell’s great here. He portrays Syracuse, an Irish fisherman who finds a woman in his net one day, and it’s one of his more thoughtful and satisfying roles.

6. Intermission

A sort of collage of different tales taking place in Dublin, this is a witty and entertaining film that seemed to put Farrell in a comfortable position to thrive.

5. Seven Psychopaths

In some ways a similar film to “Intermission” in structure, this is a quirky film about a writer, played by Farrell, looking for “real life psychopaths” to base a film script on.

4. In Bruges

Another film that too many people missed out on, “In Bruges” is available for a limited time at Picturebox Films, where films are brought in and out of a subscription service each month. This one is worth the subscription, however, as it puts Farrell at his black comedy best.

3. Minority Report

Tom Cruise got all the attention, but Farrell was right there with him in this fantastic and timeless sci-fi adventure that drew inspiration from Philip K. Dick’s short story of the same name.

2. The Recruit

On the surface, this looks like a generic spy film, but the wonderful work from Farrell and co-star Al Pacino makes it stand out in its genre. “The Recruit” is clever, tense, and incredibly fun.

1. Crazy Heart

One of Farrell’s best reviewed films, “Crazy Heart” featured Jeff Bridges in the lead role. However, Farrell’s contribution as Tommy Sweet is one of many pieces that makes this a wonderful film on the whole.

Meet Krampus

Meet Krampus:

krampus 1

Krampus is a European mythical folk character – popular in Austria, the Czech Republic, Bavaria, Hungary and the Netherlands.

He has cloven hooves and has demonic horns growing out of his skull. He has an extremely long prehensile tongue to ensnare children like the smoker from Left 4 Dead. Oh, and if your kid resists or gets in his way, he’ll smack it with a bundle of birch twigs or a whip.

Tastes like Austrian child, all right.
Tastes like Austrian child, all right.

He acts as Santa’s evil equivalent – where jolly old Saint Nick just gives you fossilised trees when you’ve been bad, this wretched creature grabs the naughty little bastards and drags them, kicking and screaming, back to Hell in his sack.

Left to right: traumatised children.
Left to right: traumatised children.

Sometimes the naughty kid gets lucky, though, as in some versions, he merely eats or drowns them.

Krampusnacht falls on the 5th of December – the eve of the Feast of Saint Nicholas, where he and Krampus essentially saunter around the local businesses and homes and, I imagine, terrify children until there is literally no poo left within their tiny bodies. The adults naturally turned this into a festival of its own and dress up as the damned thing en masse.

There’s a tradition of postcards featuring Krampus, typically traumatising children or leching after buxom women, which, to be fair, is exactly what I would do if I were in his position.

His history with the church and the Austrofascist state has been generally repressive; both the Roman Catholic Church and the Dollfuss regime tried to prevent people from observing the traditions associated with him. They couldn’t keep a good folk-monster down, though, and he’s steadily gained in popularity ever since. His google trends have him at the highest he’s ever been. His more recent opposition are typically concerned parents and psychiatrists who think he’s too scary and violent and all those things that everybody actually likes because it’s exciting.

Gearbox has once again been keeping busy, and is now just about ready to treat Borderlands 2 players to yet more DLC for their FPS RPG loot hunting extravaganza. How Marcus Saved Mercenary Day is the newest of Gearbox’s Headhunter Packs, after the Thanksgiving inspired  Horrible Hunger of the Ravenous Wattle Gobbler and Halloween themed TK Baha’s Bloody Harvest. These packs give players mini-sized DLC experiences with new missions, areas and unlockables, and this newest Christmas themed pack is very reasonably priced at just £2.39 / $2.99 / €2.99.

How Marcus Saved Mercenary Day will reportedly follow the Vault Hunter’s exploits in the frozen land of Snowy Bottom. Pandora’s favorite heavy weapons dealer has had train full of his munitions disappear on its way to the Christmas town of Gingerton, and do he’s enlisted the player’s help to uncover the mystery. Naturally, things aren’t quite that straightforward, as  the Abominable Mister Tinder Snowflake turns up, eventually leading to a showdown where players can slay the abominable snowman and nab themselves a unique snowman head for their characters.

The pack is due for release on Dec 17th for PS3, PC and Xbox 360.

OFF

0

OFF is a surreal indie RPG made by Mortis Ghost using RPGMaker 2003.

You control the Batter, a baseball guy on a mission to purify the world. The world is series of Zones connected by The Nothingness, which you must travel through, solving puzzles and fighting spectres.

You control the Batter on an overhead brightly coloured map. Your characters, including the Batter, level up as you progress, gaining XP in Pokemon-style turn based combat, solving block and switch puzzles and mazes, and acquiring allies to assist in battle. In contrast to the basic graphics and stark colours, there is a complex soundtrack and bizarre, philosophical dialogue.

off1

The setting is jarring and full of weirdness – the world has four elements (meat, smoke, plastic and metal) all of which are harvested and extracted in strange and sometimes disturbing ways. In Zone 1 we encounter the farms where cows are slaughtered to extract their metal, and sail down the meat canals to the meat fountains of Alma.

off2

The villains are creepy, scary and sometimes sweary, and often do not seem as evil as they may have been made out! I don’t want to include any spoilers, but the Batter is often criticised in the game for his violence towards the Spectres, creatures whose nature we are not certain of at the start. The Zone 2 boss fight with Japhet proved difficult and emotional, involving me in a way I did not expect, surprising me with the depth of plot and the convincing dialogue.

With such an alien world it’s easy to feel isolated in the game, enhanced by the NPCs who speak directly to you, the player, rather than the Batter you are controlling.

The puzzles and battles increase in difficulty and I’m ashamed to admit I did resort to a walkthrough, but only as I sometimes got bored solving puzzles and losing fights when I just wanted to progress the story and learn more about the crazy world. The mechanics of the game can get repetitive, but the engaging world and intriguing plot easily outweigh this issue.

OFF is a brilliant little game, with surprising depth and plot, and is far weirder than the French-ness of its creator would account for! In a lot of ways it seems to be quite self-referential, dealing with the nature of games and including lots of little elements that subvert the expectations of the genre. Even knowing how it makes me sound I would consider this a post-modern game, and one for gamers, not for the younger kids. A big bonus for me is that it is a free homebrew game which can run fine on even my oldest laptop. Despite its simplicity this is not a quick, casual game, and even with walkthroughs provides many hours of fun.

Danny Wells, original voice actor for Luigi, passes away

0

Danny Wells, the original voice actor for Luigi, has passed away aged 72.

The star of “The Super Mario Bros. Super Show!”was known for playing Luigi in both the live action and animated segments throughout the 1989, and his death has been felt by millions over the globe that grew up watching the on-screen brothers host a hugely entertaining show. He performed alongside the late Lou Albano, who played Mario.

Whilst only having one series, the programme was seen as a moderate success, with each episode consisting of a live action segment that would feature a special guest, such as Cyndi Lauper, Ernie Hudson of Ghostbusters fame, and WWF wrestler Sergeant Slaughter.

Whilst Danny, whose real name is Jack Westelman, will always be most well known to us gamers for providing us the voice of the Green Plumber, he also played the voice of Captain Partridge in Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, as well as appearing in Magnolia, The Jeffersons and, most recently, Walter in Rookie Blue.

Official Godzilla Trailer!

We’ve seen leaked footage, heard about how it wowed the comic con crowds and finally the wait is over. Spine tingling is my chosen turn of phrase for this almost three minutes of Godzilla awesomeness. Destruction, fear, bravery and that oh so recognisable roar. Honestly, I was sceptical but if this trailer is anything to go by, I think I’m going to love it!

We are so lucky that we also have a shiny new poster:

Award winning graphic novel becomes feature film

Benjamin Rivers creative type.
Benjamin Rivers creative type.

Snow by Benjamin Rivers is an award-winning graphic novel set entirely in Toronto’s Queen Street West neighbourhood. It features the story of Dana, a woman who likes her job, her friends, and the cozy comfort of her neighbourhood but doesn’t deal well with confrontation. The underlying theme of the story is the emotional impact of the changing Queen West area, and how things can change without you even realising it.

Snow has already been the basis of a charmingly old-school point-and-click game, which you can get here. Now through local film maker Ryan Couldrey, the book is becoming a film shot mainly in Queen West Toronto.

The film has already entered production, due to appear in late 2014 and will be available to stream completely free. Although paying to download it or buying the Blu-ray will result in all money going to The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation and you’ll get other cool stuff too, not just the film.

Couldrey is making this completely independently; no investors, no kickstarters, no grants. Just passionate, dedicated & talented folks creating something.

Captain Picard sings ‘Let it Snow’

Whether you like it or not the Christmas season is upon us. We’re well into December now and that means those annoying people will be constantly be pointing out how little time is left to get organised and spend massive amounts of money on gifts, food and boozing. It can all get a little stressful and, let’s be honest, ruin your mood.

But never fear because I have just the thing to ease the stress and release a little Noel spirit back into your weary body. All you need is Captain Picard singing that Christmas ditty ‘Let it Snow’. Shut up Wesley!
