The Walking Dead – Season 4 – Episode 8 – Too Far Gone

Alternative title: ‘The Zed Wedding.’

I allude to the infamous event from Game of Thrones’ The Rains of Castamere episode because there are many parallels to be drawn: both contained wholesale bloodshed, and named character deaths, at the hand of one of the series’ villains, an older man, a father, who lusts for power. However, Too Far Gone did not contain the punch of the horrible Red Wedding, being so built-up and hyped (with the advert for this week’s episode promising people would die). There was also, I’m afraid, a sense of what I like to call ‘Plot Armour’ in place for many of the named characters, which reduced the effectiveness of the episode.The-Walking-Dead-Too-Far-Gone-1

It opens with the Governor capturing Michonne and Hershel, somehow getting the drop on Michonne (which makes little sense, but I guess we have to go with it). He then convinces his camp that their survival is contingent on them claiming the prison/Rickopolis, and they go with that, mainly because he lies through the teeth about Rick’s group.

Side note: the Governor seems to have been in charge for about a week, and yet no one asks why he’s so bloodthirsty, or even questions his logic. It plays quite odd, but I suppose it must play like that to create the conflict.

So the Governor stashes Meghan and Lilly by a river, and leaves them entirely alone, with barely any protection, completely assuming that everything will be safe. Again, which makes little sense. In fact, the more I think about this episode, the more I find little holes in it, slight faults which dampen its impact.

There is a stand-off, where the Governor holds Herschel and Michonne hostage, and demands that the Rick ‘n’ Rollers leave the prison, insisting that he speak to Rick alone because, really, this is all about Rick in his mind. The hero who must be shown to be less than that, to be worthless. It’s a somewhat silly stand-off, again, mainly because this new group don’t question why Rick should leave/die when he is begging to share the prison with them, when he says there are sick children inside. They don’t even blink when the Governor holds a sword to Herschel’s throat. It’s really odd.

At this point, Rick gives a great motivational speech, and I really thought that the Governor would buy into it, but that Carl would ruin the peace, killing the Governor. That would have been tragic, and interesting. Sadly, the Governor merely proves his madness by chopping into Herschel’s neck, sealing his fate, and starting the battle for the pRickson.

After that, the fight plays out. I was a little nervous that they would kill one of my favourite characters – Michonne, Tyreese, or Darryl – but the Plot Armour was apparent enough that I didn’t worry too much. It was also weird that no one tried to help the Governor fight Rick in hand-to-hand combat, or that Michonne waited ages before she enacted her revenge, ran the Governor through. And then Walkers turn up in odd places, because it’s plot convenient, and a Walker proves to be a perfect shield against high-powered bullets for Darryl.

And that’s before the monumental idiocy/negligence of the children of the group looking after Judith alone – with not one adult thinking to secure her when a TANK SHELL EXPLODED AGAINST THE SIDE OF THE PRISON – who, at some point, just leave Judith behind to get eaten, but stay together and arm themselves to protect Tyreese at the last minute. Oh, and these same kids are magically strong, as they can fire pistols without being knocked to the ground/breaking their shoulders from the recoil.

The group end the episode like the plot throughout: fractured, battered, and lacking much coherence. It sets up the rest of the season for some interesting episodes and plot choices, but there was such a painful lack of common sense throughout this episode (which I’m considering more and more during this write-up) that it undercuts the power of character deaths. There’s even little satisfaction at the Governor’s demise: just a bullet through the head from Lilly, who executes him the same way he executed the zombified Meghan. It lacked finesse, just seemed rushed, like a teenager trying to hurry a sexual experience.

Darryl killing a tank was cool, though. I’ll give it that, but not much else.

Christopher Evans Welch, original voice actor of Miles “Tails” Prower, dies in LA

0

Christopher Evans Welch, the original voice actor for Miles “Tails” Prower, has sadly passed away in an LA hospital following an illness. It is believed he was aged 48.

Christopher Evans Welch, the original Tails

With his first television role being Sonic’s beloved sidekick and friend in The Adventure of Sonic the Hedgehog (1993), he later appeared in other tv and film works including, but not limited to, the narrator in Woody Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona, the Photographer in 2005’s War of the Worlds, and Grant Test in Rubicon . The actor had been shooting a role in the upcoming HBO series Silicon Valley prior to his unfortunate passing.

Having grown up with the original television show, I am sure I am not alone that the cartoon introduced me to Sonic and, in turn, gaming in general. He is survived by a daughter, sister, Mother and Father.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 Trailer Revealed

0

After a few little teasers for the upcoming film, the first full-length trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was revealed earlier today. Set to hit the cinema in May 2014, the first look trailer is a bit of a beast, jam-packed with Spidey taking on a number of baddies and raising plenty of questions about what we can expect next Summer. So, let’s take a look at what’s in store for Marc Webb’s re-imagining of this comic book classic.

1367931148_1367930551_tumblr_mme5h1yMFW1s070kko1_1280One of the key plot elements of the sequel will be the introduction of Harry Osborn, played by the fantastic Dennis DeHaan. A relative newcomer to the big screen, DeHaan has quickly become a prominent young actor appearing in recent successes such as Chronicle, Lawless and The Place Beyond the Pines.

To many, DeHaan’s casting as Harry reflects the way in which Webb’s Spider-Man movies are closer adaptations, with him appearing as a better match to the role than James Franco’s portrayal in the earlier films. With the character of Mary-Jane being cut from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and her appearance delayed until the third film, this allows for a better focus on the development of Harry Osborn’s character and his relationship with Peter Parker.

In terms of villains for the upcoming sequel, Spidey’s had three big baddies thrown at him. Jamie Foxx appears as Electro and despite the character going through quite a re-design, I do rather enjoy the look they’ve gone for. We’ve also got The Rhino, played by the excellent Paul Giamatti and there’s a glimpse of the Green Goblin with a little mystery surrounding his role in the trailer. The first look trailer also offers us a sneak peek at suits for both The Vulture and Doctor Octopus, could we be seeing them in the third movie perhaps? Now, I bloody hated Doc Ock in Spider-Man 2, so let’s hope Marc Webb ups the stakes with that one.

The decision to delay MJ’s introduction until the third film also allows more time for Peter Parker’s relationship with Gwen Stacy to develop. I’m definitely happy with this decision as I was very disappointed with Gwen’s portrayal in the Tobey Maguire films and her lack of presence overall. Also, I think there’s great chemistry between Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker and Emma Stone’s character and allows for a more accurate portrayal of his funny personality.

the-amazing-spider-man-2-andrew-garfield-peter-parker-emma-stone-gwen-stacyNow, whilst I do love Emma Stone and I’m happy she’s with us for a while longer, the development of Peter and Gwen’s relationship can only go so far. If you’re a fan of the comic books then you know exactly where I’m going with this and MJ’s introduction in the third film is a further hint and what might happen next year.

Overall, I’m pretty impressed with the first trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. I was sceptical at first over Jamie Foxx’s Electro and using three of Spidey’s classic foes in one movie. However, after seeing this trailer my opinion has changed and I can’t wait to see what’s in store next Summer. I also think that the decision to delay MJ’s arrival was a great idea and feel that it will allow for better character development in the series. I’m a big Spider-Man fan and hated the first trilogy starring Tobey Maguire. Whilst Marc Webb’s reinvention was in no way perfect, I felt that it was a much better film adaptation of my favourite superhero series.

Keep posted for more news on the upcoming movie over the next few months and let’s hope the trailer gets your Spidey senses tingling!

Review: Harley Quinn #0

0

580-HarleyQuinn1_rceimv4twg__0

Those of you who read my last review involving the New 52 Villain Month Special: Harley Quinn would know, I am really not a massive fan of her Suicide Squad variant.  So needless to say, I was really apprehensive about her having her own series within the new world of DC Comics, but I do enjoy the works of Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti, so this gave me a sense of optimism.  I will not bore you with the details of her costume, as those of you who have seen my previous reviews know I am not the biggest fan of how she looks these days…

That being said, I picked my copies up of Harley Quinn #0 (yes copies, I had to get all the covers) and approached it with an open mind, and here is what I have to say on her solo series.

Untitled-1

There is not much of a plot to this issue, it’s very light-hearted. I cannot believe I am saying this, but despite it not looking like Harley Quinn, there are certainly personality traits of her, and this brought a smile to my face… a bitter and annoyed smile. Why? Cause I didn’t want to like it! I’ve been so against the New 52 Harley Quinn since day one, that I expected to hate this. I judged this before I even read it, and I actually enjoyed it. The issue is a showcase of incredible creatives getting together and bringing Harley Quinn back to the readers (the little bit from Bruce Timm, for me, was a little nod to his fans and fans of Harley Quinn, to say “it’s OK… she’s evolved a bit”). This is just a fun issue and not to be taken seriously by any means at all; they break the fourth will a bit (very reminiscent of what you’d see with Deadpool in my opinion) by making her interact with the art, the writers and the reader.  It’s very disjointed in stylisation and artwork, however when you have 19 different artists working on one issue it’s going to happen! Which is why you really need to view this piece as a showcase; an introduction to where the solo series is going.

If I really had to find something to criticise it would be the fact that I found Jim Lee’s piece to just be a bit of a cop out, it’s basically a recycled page from Hush, just Harley as her New 52 self. Just seems like not much effort went into that piece, I expected something a bit more I guess. Though that being said, I really liked the overall art and feel of the entire comic. We even got to see the debut of Jeremy Roberts- the winner of the contest DC Comics ran a few months ago, to give aspiring comic book illustrators a chance to get into the comic themselves (even I drew up a piece, but never grew a pair and entered!).  The contest was extremely controversial due to some content, but it was altered a little bit to prevent further controversy; which I am glad to see they did after the major response from the fans.

So after this amazing showcase of artists and little fun Looney-Toon-esque snippets, we close with the work of Chad Hardin, who is going to be illustrating the main series! The pages he illustrates give us a quick build up of what we are to expect from the new solo Harley Quinn series. Hardin creates a stunning look within Harley’s new world, and is very expressive; and captures a nice quality of Amanda Conner’s art just with a bit more darker tones and grit. He fits the bill nicely, and despite me still not seeing Harley in these… I’m not as apprehensive anymore. So I will be going to buy Harley Quinn #1.

I will try and cast aside my issues with the New 52 and give this Harley a chance. Why? Cause Bruce Timm gave it a nod.

Read Only Memories, and why it’s the most important game on Kickstarter right now

0

So the wonderful people at GaymerX have collaborated with Mid Boss and Ouya to ready up ROM: Read Only Memories, a fantastic looking cyberpunk adventure game in the vein of one of my favourite games ever created: Snatcher. It will be made of sheer pure unadulterated awesome and here’s why you should back it, complete with an unprofessional abundance of exclamation marks:

It’s a Cyberpunk Adventure! To those who have played Kojima’s first great ambitious project Snatcher, they realise how tantalising a prospect this is but those that haven’t should think of Blade Runner, but awesome, anime and filled with really clever in-jokes and meta-puzzles. This is the dev’s favourite game, and sounds like the base for what should be a fascinating revival of a genre that’s been mostly dead since 1997.

 ROMissocool

The Story sounds rather fascinating! The premise sounds like a mix between Blade Runner, Chobits and the massively underrated Beyond Good and Evil. You are a journalist in Neo-San Francisco. It’s tough living in one of the fastest moving cities of 2064 but you’re plucky and will do anything to get a story. One day you get a ROM, a kind of robotic smartphone with a message from your friend saying he’s had to leave the country immediately. Naturally, as a journalist with the tenacity of Glenn Greenwald you look into the case, exploring the huge Parallax corporation your friend worked for. From there you uncover mysteries, solve others, and through talking to the diverse characters (more on that later) plots cover and uncover themselves and the story shifts based on your actions. All very fantastic-sounding if they pull it off.

It’s amazingly cute! Come on, look at this guy’s face and tell me you don’t want to play this game!

 So Cute!

It’s a reason to buy an Ouya! The game is being created as part of the Free the Games fund, which means they will double the $62,000 pledge if it makes the goal amount. Which it will. Because the world is wonderful. Sure, it is only an exclusive for consoles and so you can still get it on PC, Mac, Linux and Android on launch, but still! It’s a good Ouya game!

It provides positive, diverse representations of the LGBTQ community! This is the elephant in the room really. You can talk to the ROM and provide your gender from a wide spectrum, something that hasn’t been seen since the transsexual Fuzzy jesters from Ultima III, and not deliberately even then. Moreover the cast of characters are fascinatingly diverse, with a wide range of sexualities, genders, degrees of mascot-ness and with that comes interesting ways to solve puzzles. It’s all very very interesting, particularly in a gaming landscape where the players are becoming more diverse but the games themselves ever more heteronormative.

 ROMhasfluffyears

There are about seven days left as of publication and it looks like an absolutely amazing thing to be a part of and I hope so much that they get the money they deserve. If you want to contribute, you can visit their Kickstarter here.

Soaring Penguin Press to Launch Mengelmoes

0

Schoolboy_FinalCoverGrowing up is hard. There are many rules to learn, rules that once appropriated become an intrinsic part of us. But what happens when the entire playing field shifts and everything is different? How do you deal with learning new things when you barely got the hang of the old ones? Willem Samuel chose to document his struggles with an ever changing world by drawing up what he’d gone through, covering seventeen years of his life. Here’s a press release from Soaring Penguin Press about what we should expect when Mengelmoes hits the shelves in February, 2014.
When you’re a teenager, life can seem a bit random.

When you’re a white teenager, growing up in post-apartheid South Africa, the term you’d use is Mengelmoes: a mishmash. A casual and caustic chopping-up-and-changing of the rules that you were only just starting too get a handle on.

To try and make sense of a world in flux, Willem Samuel would draw stories as they occurred to him whether the mundane (math class), the fantastical (a sermon turned zombie attack) or the tragic (Mom finding your porn stash).

Volume One starts with Willem at age 14 and follows his journey through a documentary-style comic, as he takes on different guises as a young Afrikaner, as he learns to shape-shift from guilty boy to superhero, from devil to saint, from a rock god into an ageing mortal nobody.

This is Mengelmoes, a six-part series covering Willem’s life in South Africa from 1994 to 2011, from a boy in middle school too a young, married professional. The first issue, The Schoolboy – taking place in 1994, the year apartheid ending and Nelson Mandela was elected – is out in February 2014.

Soaring Penguin Press will also be offering a subscription service: the complete 6-issue run for £23.50 including p&p (UK) or $33.50 (US and Canada); (elsewhere, add £5).
Since I’m really lucky, I got to read the first issue, so stick around, cause the review will soon follow.

PS4 sells 2.1 million worldwide!

0

Andrew House, Sony Computer Entertainment’s President and Group CEO, has posted on the Playstation Blog detailing the impressive initial launch figures of the Playstation 4.

He writes, “In what is shaping up to be a historic year for gamers, I’m delighted to share an important new milestone with you. PS4′s North American debut on 15th November was PlayStation’s largest ever, with more than one million gamers picking up a PS4 in just 24 hours. Now, with PS4′s global launch expanding to a total of 32 countries worldwide, including Europe and Latin America, I’m proud to announce that more than 2.1 million PS4s have been sold.”

He continues, “The best part: the PS4 journey has just begun. In addition to an incredible line-up of PS4 games from the best developers in the world, we will continue to introduce valuable new features and services to PS4 in the months and years ahead.”

“While PS4′s capabilities will continue to evolve, our commitment to gamers and breakthrough entertainment remains steadfast. We believe that videogames represent the pinnacle of artistry and entertainment, and we will work tirelessly to make sure that PlayStation remains the best place to play.” With all of Sony’s first party studios working on unannounced titles at the moment, apart from Naughty Dog with Uncharted 4 (temporary name) having been teased through a trailer, Sony are keeping all their cards close to their chest. Having arguably the best and most diverse range of first party studios at their disposal, the timings of these games reveals and releases will  play a huge factor into the longevity of the console.

He concludes with “Thank you for your passion and your support – we couldn’t have done this without you.“

Look how happy we’ve made him!

News broke on Monday that the flagship Sony console has sold in excess of 250,000 units in the UK alone, breaking the previous record for fastest selling console that was originally held by none other than the Playstation Portable (which sold around 185,000, just for those out there that like your statistics.) What is important to bear in mind, however, is that initial sales don’t guarantee a successful future ahead of the console; The PSP notoriously struggled throughout the vast majority of it’s life in the West.

What do you think of this news, and the console itself? Does it meet your expectations? Let us know in the comments below!

The Wolfman headed for small screen at NBC.

0

the-wolfman-006

In a change from the now somewhat regular announcements about comic properties being adapted for film or television, news had just emerged that NBC is planning to make a series out of ‘The Wolfman.’

The Wolfman is set to join Dracula as the latest classic horror monster to gain his own TV show with the network . Dan Knauf, the producer and writer of Dracula is set to bring the tortured lycanthrope to the smallscreen.

2010’s The Wolfman, starring Anthony Hopkins, Benicio Del Toro, and Emily Blunt, was a remake of the classic Universal horror from 1941, which starred horror icon Lon Chaney Jr.

The new series will be a ‘supernatural thriller that explores what it means to be a man, and to be human,’ and will, like the films, centre around Lawrence Talbot, a man afflicted with an ancient curse. Whether this will be set in the 19th Century or not remains to be seen. For all its faults, the recent remake did manage to evoke a gothic atmosphere as Talbot ran amok in 19th Century London.

It’s early days, however, and, given the lukewarm response to Dracula, it will be interesting to see whether NBC moves forward with this.
