The Raid to get a Remake

0

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PkULMOFpuCo

With the success of The Raid being plain for all martial arts/action film enthusiasts to see, it was no surprise when people learnt Gareth Evans (Writer/Director) was in line to make a sequel. The Raid 2: Berandal is set for release in New Zealand in just over a months time. What is surprising, which shouldn’t be given Hollywood’s track record, is an American re-make of The Raid is apparently being talked about with Expendables 3 director Patrick Hughes almost certain to be attached.

hot-brothers
Hemsworth brothers rumoured for the remake

Hollywood, just can’t stop itself, back in the early 2000s they were keeping an eye on what Japan was making horror wise which resulted in  Ju-On, Ringu or Dark Water all being spun into an Americanized version of themselves. After Japan was tapped out we saw Hollywood turn it’s eyes to the next flavour of the month/year and watched as it rinsed and repeated mistake after mistake. Only ever managing to out do the foreign original once in a blue moon.

Warner Bros grabbed the Oscar for best picture, in 2007 when Martin Scorsese directed Leonardo Di Caprio and Matt Damon in the thriller ‘The Departed‘. This was a remake of the 2002 Hong Kong film ‘Infernal Affairs’ (actually a trilogy). Infernal Affairs made only $8 million at box office, whereas The Departed took in $290 million. It seems as though the originals of the films for the main part always outshone their remade counterparts. Rec vs Quarantine anyone? Or Spike Lee’s Old Boy vs the original Old Boy? The list is seemingly endless. Yet here we are with Spike Lee’s re-make of Korean classic Old Boy having bombed hard at the American Box Office (No surprise) and Phillip Hughes about to be let loose on The Raid. How many more times will Hollywood try and fail to re-make foreign film classics?

With Patrick Hughes set to direct, there have already been talks as to who will play Rama (Iko Uwais) and his brother Andi (Donny Alamsyah). As the film is a martial arts, no holds barred kind of a film, the obvious choice for Hollywood it appears was Chris Hemsworth (Thor) and his brother Liam (Gale Hawthorne). Though Shia LeBeouf’s name has also been bandied around, once the rumour of Hughes as director has been confirmed, there will be a lot more movement on who will be cast in the film.

Final pre-launch trailer released for Thief (2014)

0

thief-4-logo

Fans of the original game will be happy to find that Thief (2014) is poised to reignite their inner kleptomaniac in us all.

I fondly remember playing the original on a clunky old PC back in the turn of the millennium. Since then, the only title to compare in terms of dark and pseudo old-world sneakery has been Dishonored.

Dishonored was a fantastic game with many similar traits and based around a just-as-sneaky assassin in a dark and twisted landscape. As good as Dishonored was, and still is, I was very excited to hear about a reboot of the Thief franchise last year and finally a trailer has arrived.

Thief will be released next Tuesday in North America on Friday in Europe so enjoy and keep an eye on your jewellery.

Episode 2 of Telltale’s The Walking Dead: Season 2 to release in ‘early March’!

0

Good news, TWD fans, everyone’s favourite pint-sized heroine will be returning to the zombie apocalypse next month!

TWD1

Telltale Games announced yesterday that Episode 2, ‘A House Divided’, will be made available in ‘early March’. Teasing us with two new screenshots, showing Clementine getting into a zombie scrap on a railway bridge, the folks over at Telltale promise that an official release date, as well as a new trailer, will be coming out very soon.

For those that aren’t aware of Telltale’s The Walking Dead, the episodic game follows the trials of survival in the zombie-filled world created by Robert Kirkman. In Season 2, the player controls young Clementine, who is constantly forced to make tough, moral choices in order to survive. Telltale’s masterful story-telling and pure heart-string-tugging capabilities really serve to make this a gaming experience that any geek, whether a fan of The Walking Dead or not, should try out!

TWD2

Telltale is also responsible for graphic novel adaptation, The Wolf Among Us, the second episode of which was released recently, and is currently working on Tales of the Borderlands – an interesting spin on the Borderlands universe, and an as-yet-untitled Game of Thrones game. Given the critical reception enjoyed by TWD, it’s certainly exciting to see what Telltale Games have up their sleeves for these new franchises!

The latest casting news for Gotham, the upcoming TV show telling the story of a young Jim Gordon (played by Ben McKenzie) navigating the shadows of Gotham City, has cast Jada Pinkett Smith, still best known as Niobe in The Matrix films, as Fish Mooney.

Mooney a new character not from the comics is a gangster boss with a sadistic streak and a nightclub owner. Street wise and intuitive, especially when it comes to reading people Mooney is not one to be crossed she is the boss of the young Oswald Cobblepot (played by newcomer Robin Lord Taylor), who as any Batman fan knows becomes The Penguin. Cobblepot’s journey from underling to notorious criminal mastermind is set to feature as one of Gotham’s stories.

Words Captured Under Glass – Jewellery by Littlebookwyrm

Books are great, aren’t they? Little bound piles of paper covered in tiny squiggles of ink that can transport you across the universe, deep under the sea, or to other times and dimensions. They can heal you when you are broken and allow you to live a hundred, a thousand lives while those around you are stuck with the one.

If you are anything like me then you live for those perfect reading moments, the moments when the line between the words on the page and the thoughts in your in your head becomes blurred and then disappears; when there is no you and there is no book, there is only the Story.

And then it is gone, the way of all magic, fleeting and too easily dispelled…

But say, wouldn’t it be nice if you could capture that perfect moment and carry it with you in the real world? Well, allow me to direct your attention to a relatively new corner of Etsy, a corner that smells pleasantly of old book shops and solder, where tiny winged beasts scuttle from your path and watch your passing with fiery eyes. Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls of all ages! May I present to you the home of the Littlebookwyrm…

In Sophie the Shopkeeper’s own words:

I stalk words and capture them and once they’ve stopped wriggling I turn them into pretty things. I use second hand books which are lonely and unwanted and I give them a new lease on life by using them to create something beautiful.

And beautiful they are! Littlebookwyrm takes cutting from unwanted second-hand books and seals the perfect passage under a glass dome to create exquisite necklaces and charms for the discerning book lover. Fan Art Feature; N from Pokemon

0

So for this weeks Fan Art Feature I chose N from Pokemon because… God damn it that guy is attractive!!! *cough* Ok so I also like him for his personality, he absolutely adores Pokemon, after being raised by them he is able to talk to them and understand their responses. Also people make really really pretty fan art of him! It has been difficult to choose just a few of them for this article (such talented artists love N!)

pokemon__crazy_nutcase_n_by_e1n-d3bw6ff

The first one I came across is Pokemon: Crazy Nutcase N by e1n. This really shows of N’s relationship with his Pokemon and the Pokemon around him. Woobat is wearing his cap and they all look happy and calm with one another, this is a real feel good piece!

This is also something that is shown in the next piece of art work;

n_by_vixiebee-d3l49sj

I love the colours in N by vixiebee. It is a really bright picture with lots of positive feelings with a nice flow to it, everything engages well together, from the grass tufts around N to the Pokemon interacting with him!

I like how the same soft tones flow in this next piece too.

n_and_a_few_pokemon_by_monospec-d3aln7b

I like the sketchy quality of N and a few pokemon by vanillatte54 it is simple but very effective!

Next is my absolute favourite piece that I found! I kinda let out a lil “squee” noise when I saw it!

There are no words to describe the beauty that is N by tatouji. Just look at it… Stare at it for a long while… That’s my plan!

And lastly lets end on something a little more humorous and cutesy!

touko_y_n_y_pokemon_by_jumpix-d30zorf

I love Jumpix‘s Touko y N y pokemon its just so bright and cute! The chibi-esque art style fits super well with the characters and the Pokemon!

If any of you have any idea’s has to who should be featured in future Fan Art Features let us know!

Get ready for Guild Ball!

I’ve been watching Guild Ball for quite some time. I’ve seen their Facebook fan base grow exponentially, relished the updates they’ve provided and waited with baited breath for their Kickstarter to go live.

Finally the wait is over…

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XONFIHXjX20

Guild Ball is a pseudo-medieval skirmish game with a difference. It’s primarily a 28mm scale five-a-side mob football match, in the style of Kaosball and Dreadball, though it sets itself apart from these by having an original and fast paced set of skirmish rules and is played on a 3′ by 3′ table, rather than a set board, allowing you to use any and all of your existing gaming terrain.

What initially caught my attention was the sumptuous artwork that the Guild Ball team have been teasing their Facebook fans with.

GB 1

They very shrewdly partnered up with Doug Telford, an illustrator and concept artist who has worked on AAA video game titles such as Heavenly Sword and Killzone. For me it’s Doug’s work that has really helped bring the world of Guild Ball alive.

[one_half]gb butcher [/one_half]
[one_half_last]gb fish[/one_half_last]

The game is set in a world known as the Empire of Free Cities, where the lands of the Empire are made up of a huge variety of climates, cultures and landscapes each controlled by a sovereign City. At its core, it sees players on opposing teams clash and struggle to control a leather wrapped inflated pig’s bladder, and attempt to kick it into their opponents’ goal.

The citizens of the Empire of Free Cities have gone crazy over the sport. The Guilds, never one to pass up an opportunity to make money, have taken advantage of this surge in popularity and invested vast amounts of cash. Games are now played out in front of huge crowds of fans, whilst behind the scenes the results can mean fortunes are won or lost on the kick of a ball.

gb morts

The genius of Guild Ball hides within its rules system; an intuitive, easy to learn, modern set of game mechanics that provide ample opportunity for complex strategising, while being fast paced and incredibly fun to be a part of. Success comes with carefully constructed ‘plays’ and ‘counter plays’, with emphasis on anticipation, positioning and resource management.

gb stat card

As it’s played on a table, rather than a board, terrain can have a huge affect on play, something lacking from similar tabletop sports games. Using classic D6’s, with an intuitive dice pool system, hit resolution is lighting fast with minimal computations. Whilst the hit resolution system is fast and intuitive, the playbook allows for a huge variety of outcomes to each dice roll.

The most interesting aspects of game play, so far, seems to be the Influence and Momentum systems.

As players perform and achieve in-game actions they generate Momentum, which can in turn be spent on triggering special ‘plays’, shooting at goals or out-of-turn reaction moves. Any momentum left over at the end of the turn translates into a massive advantage on determining initiative the following turn.

Influence, representing an individual model’s effect on the game, can sway actions and movement each turn. This leads to an intense bluffing and counter-bluffing meta-game, as well as a need for deep risk management and turn planning.

gb minis

The miniature renders look gorgeous too. They’re sculpted by Russ Charles of Clockwork Goblin and will be available in metal or 3D printed resin versions. Initially Guild Ball will showcase four different Guild teams; Butchers, Masons, Fishermen and Morticians, with each team specialising in a different area of play, and plenty of options for new Guild teams in the future.

[one_half]gb fishers[/one_half]
[one_half_last]gb butch[/one_half_last]

The driving force behind Guild Ball are the game’s co-creators Mat Hart and Rich Loxam.

Mat Hart has been producing video games for the last decade or more, with full Senior/Executive Producer credits on titles such as Heavenly Sword, Enslaved and Remember Me.

Rich Loxam is a digital designer and teacher. He’s been teaching design principles for the best part of 7 years and has been involved in hobby gaming for most of his life. During the last 5-6 years he has achieved the status of UK Hardcore Champion, 1st in the RankingsHQ league tables and consistently played at the top tables of most events. Most recently he has been awarded best in faction (2013) at the UK Nationals and UK Masters.

gb masons

All in all you could say I’m very eager to to see Guild Ball become another runaway Kickstarter success.

Having had access to an alpha set of the games rules, courtesy of Mat and Rich, I’ve played them through a couple of times and can’t wait to see the final product. If the miniature renders are anything to go by, there are going to be some epic figures added to my collection too.

The Guild Ball Kickstarter goes live today at 21:00 GMT, so be sure to head on over and bag an early bird offer.

You can find them on Facebook, YouTube and Twitter too.

Infographic Introducing the Guardians of the Galaxy

0

Unless you have been asleep for the past few days or trapped in a dungeon (either way I hope you’re okay), you will have definitely noticed the sudden increase in media frenzy surrounding Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. Only yesterday the official trailer was released and yes it is totally awesome and well worth the attention it’s getting.

However, you may know nothing about this particular band of characters. I haven’t read the comics and so have very limited knowledge about these misfits and their skills/powers. Well never fear, moviepilot.com has created this handy infographic to bring you up to date about each character, the movie synopsis and a list of other confirmed characters.
