Love Letter

You know the story. Boys meet girl, girl’s mother is arrested for high treason, girl locks herself away, boys attempt to woo her by passing notes to all the castle staff, including the King, girl won’t give up the goods for less than four letters, you know the drill.

Love Letter does however make the story rather more compelling. Branded as a micro-game (a board/card game with very few components), LL uses a deck of 16 cards, 13 red cubes and a minimalistic rulebook to tell the tale of young suitors passing their romantic scribblings to the Princess.

You can see why it's called a microgame!
You can see why it’s called a microgame!

The gameplay is remarkably simple. Each card has an ability, which when played comes into effect. Each player is dealt one card from the deck, then at the start of their turn the player draws a second card and chooses which one to play; the card then sits face up in front of that player until the end of this round of play.

The cards include the Guard (where the player tries to guess what is in an opponent’s hand; if they’re right, the opponent is eliminated), the Prince (which forces the opponent to discard their current card and draw a new one) and the Handmaiden (which prevents the player from being targeted by their opponents until the player’s next turn). The cards are also ranked according to their importance in the castle, so the lowly Priest is only ranked a 2, whilst the Countess is a lofty 7.

Once the deck is depleted, all players who haven’t been eliminated compare their remaining card; the highest rank card is the winner, meaning that player has successfully passed their yarn d’amore to the Princess and takes a red cube for their trouble. The players reset the game and play again until one player accumulates four love cubes, at which point the Princess is so impressed they ride off into the sunset together, or something equally romantic.

As you’ve probably guessed, a lot of the game revolves around figuring out what cards are in other players’ hands. At the start of each round of play, one card is randomly removed from the deck before card are dealt to the players. This leaves some intrigue in play, as there’ll always be an ‘unknown quantity’ that players will need to work around in their bids to eliminate the other players. However, even with this extra feature you’ll quite often end up in situations from which you cannot escape unless your opponent can’t count or read. This can either be taken as design excellence in keeping the game to a predictable time span, or a restriction within gameplay that sometimes makes tactical decisions moot. I’d hedge towards the former, since these situations only seem to arise when the deck is nearly depleted anyway, and supports the multiple play throughs per game required. Still, it can be galling to end up being stuck in a no-win situation.

Each game is relatively short, so you’d expect playtime to be short too. Well, it CAN be, but often games take anywhere up to 45 minutes to finish as everyone clings on to claim the last love cube they need. It’s still not a deal breaker, but just bear in mind that Love Letter is not the 10 minute, between-games filler it appears. Also, repeated play throughs can make the game a tad repetitive. I just got the feeling the game was trying to be a quickie but actually filled an evening slot I’d reserve for a fuller game.

The art work is beautiful, understated but highly detailed. The card-stock is decent quality, but I would recommend sleeving as soon as possible since you’ll be shuffling these bad boys A LOT. The basic edition also comes in an awesome faux velvet bag with gold lettering that sets it apart from other micro-games.

So Love Letter is a ’quick’ game that takes longer than expected, but with its simple mechanics and gorgeous artwork you won’t mind too much! Plus this is a cracking game for people who are just starting to dip into the board game hobby, and its small size keeps the cost down whilst being portable enough to chuck in your pocket and take to the local gaming club. Love Letter makes a great addition to any collection.

Destiny Alpha train keeps on rolling for PS4 players

Destiny-E3-1-1024x576

Although it was all meant to end last night, the Destiny Alpha still seems to be live and PS4 owners who log in now are possibly going to find something quite different to what has been available over the last few days.

Bungie surprised everyone earlier today when rather than booting everyone out and shutting the servers off, they instead tweeted the following:

Capture

Quite what this means is unclear at the moment however some players have reported going way beyond the original level of cap of 8 and are now using level 20 characters in addition to unlocking some extremely impressive new weapons and armour. Other forum comments suggest some additional areas and quests have now become available and new and more deadly enemy types have emerged that are proving extremely difficult to kill, hence Bungie’s warning I suppose.

Bungie have also taken this opportunity to confirm that any characters used in the Alpha will not be carried over into next month’s beta or the final version. For the duration of the Alpha, players will effectively be experiencing the game in Expert mode, so you can expect the Hive to put up much more of a fight than they did yesterday.

After a lukewarm first few hours, I’ve really started to enjoy the Destiny Alpha now and I’m looking forward to playing more of it. It takes obvious inspiration from Borderlands but mixes in elements of Halo, Mass Effect and traditional MMO’s to create the kind of game that is likely going to have a lot of staying power and so far Bungie seem to have the passion and determination to pull it off.

That’s all for now and we’ll see you in the Crucible.

Jason Momoa Cast as Aquaman – Rumours Hint at Official Announcement Coming Soon

0

Over the last couple of days the internet has been flooded with rumours that DC Comics/Warner Bros. are about to confirm Jason Momoa is to play Aquaman on Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice and in the following Justice League film. The source of the latest round of rumours is HitFix, who have gone on to say it is a definite casting, and that Zack Snyder has finished the character design so filming can begin soon.

rumor-image-2

The is not a new theory, the idea came to light six months ago but despite the internet being awash with the news Momoa adamantly denied it many a time, at one point stating: “I know, Aquaman! I couldn’t even be more random for Aquaman, you know, with the blonde hair…I don’t even know where that comes from. It’s like me being, uh, Robin or something. Who pulls that out? I see that on the Internet and I’m like, Aquaman? A guy like…Lobo, I could see.” This is not surprising, since we live in a world of social media, secrets are difficult to keep and the suits don’t want information out in the public until the deal is done.

34 year old Momoa is best known for his role as Khal Drogo on the hit series Game of Thrones and Ronan Dex in Stargate: Atlantis, but that is not to say he doesn’t have any experience in the water, yep Momoa played a part in Baywatch. Many are criticising the choice as, traditionally, Aquaman aka Arthur Curry is a blonde and, unsurprisingly given the era in which he was created, white. Whether or not he looks the part is not the question, does Momoa have the acting chops to pull of the regal fish master?

Though his role in Batman v. Superman is said to be a small one, HitFix are alluding to the fact that the king of Atlantis is not best pleased with the damage done to the Indian Ocean by the World Engine, hinting that the film will be exploring the consequences of the destruction that took place during Man of Steel – which is welcome since it has been the butt of many a meme.

We won’t know anymore information until DC Comics/Warner Bros. pull their finger out and launch an official announcement, when they do we shall endeavour to immerse you in all the information.

First Image of Tom Hardy as the Kray Twins

This is the first image of Tom Hardy playing both of the infamous Krays Twins in movie Legend. Filming is under way on the biopic written and directed by Oscar winning writer, Brian Helgeland. The story, based on the book The Profession of Violence by John Pearson, will track the two underworld kingpins, exploring their difficult relationship and reign of terror in gangland London during the 1950s & 60s.

The twins, though feared for their violent and brutal actions, became iconic in the West End of London during the swinging sixties and mixed with an number of celebrities of the day including Diana Dors, Judy Garland and Frank Sinatra. Their hold on the criminal underworld was finally halted with their arrest for the murder of fellow gangsters George Cornell and Jack ‘The Hat’ McVitie, in May 1968. In 1995 Ronnie Kray died of a heart attack in prison whilst Reggie died from cancer in 2000 just eight weeks after his release on compassionate grounds.

In April actor Hardy commented on the challenge of playing the identical twins saying “I’ve got to work out how to play both twins, which will be fun. It’s another experiment and I’m really looking forward to it. I’m not going to put too much pressure on myself, I just want to have some fun and see what’s out there and explore with the work.”

The film looks set for a 2015 release and also stars Emily Browning, Christopher Eccleston and David Thewlis.

Harrison Ford Fractures Ankle Whilst Filming Star Wars: Episode VII

0

hansolo

Today It’s been confirmed that good ol’ Han Solo himself, Harrison Ford, has fractured his ankle whilst filming the next Star Wars instalment at Pinewood Studios. To make it even more interesting and seriously cool, it is being reported that the cause of the injury was the door of the Millennium Falcon, but so far this is just a rumour and not confirmed by anyone related to the production.

Despite many a story flying wildly around Ford has not been crushed though the actor was airlifted to John Radcliffe Hospital, in Oxford. Lucasfilm announced “Harrison Ford sustained an ankle injury during filming today on the set of Star Wars: Episode VII. He was taken to a local hospital and is receiving care.” More importantly confirming that “shooting will continue as planned while he recuperates,”

The incident was reported to the police with Thames Valley Police confirming officers had been called to the studio, near London, with reports a 71-year-old man had been injured in an incident involving a garage door. The force also confirmed The Health and Safety Executive is investigating, with the possibility of Pinewood Studios getting a full safety check in wake of the incident.

This is not the first time Ford has been injured on set. Whilst filming Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, he sustained a back injury requiring surgery. Director Spielberg did not delay shooting instead enlisting the help of a stunt double, who was often mistaken for the lead whilst on set, as a stand in.

Star Wars: Episode VII is being directed by J.J. Abrams and alongside Harrison Ford stars Lupita Nyong’o’, Gwendoline Christie, John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow along with the original stars of the Saga  – Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker. The first in the new trilogy is set for worldwide release in December 2015.

E3 2014: The Year of the Beta

0

In my run down of this year’s PlayStation presser, I highlighted that EA caused a temporary glitch in the internet when they announced that a Battlefield: Hardline beta would be immediately available on the PC and PS4 but only to a strictly limited number of people.

With E3 audiences becoming larger and larger thanks to non-stop, TV-style video coverage by the major news sites and open live streaming of what were once only closed-door press events, it seems as though a few of the major publishers are looking to harness the popularity of Twitch and take the opportunity to encourage involvement from those parts of the audience outside of the Los Angeles Convention Center.

With all the commotion of the last few days it’s possible that you may have missed out on a couple of these announcements. So out of the goodness of hearts, here is a quick recap of how you can get involved in some early big-budget gameplay from the comfort of your own home.

Battlefield: Hardline (PS4, PC)

This has probably been the most popular of the three major announced betas so far as it is the only one which is actually open and running at the time of this article going to press.

You can check out our hands-on preview of it here but needless to say that if you loved Battlefield 4 then you’re probably going to like this. If not, then possibly not so much.

All immediately available slots were soon filled within the first hour but EA quickly opened up their closed Titanfall beta beyond the initial allocation earlier this year before allowing anyone with an Xbox One or Origin account to get onboard so it will definitely still be worth keeping an eye on this one if you’re interested. EA are still accepting signups here and it is likely that everyone who signs up will also receive some exclusive additional content for Battlefield 4 as a thank you.

Destiny Alpha (PS4) / Destiny Beta (Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4)

Included in the opening of Sony’s press conference, the Destiny limited multiplayer alpha opens for PS4 users later tonight after E3 officially closes at approximately 4am on Friday in UK local time. It will run from 12th-15th June and the quite frankly weird registration system closed earlier today but it may still be worth keeping an eye on the official site in case things change.

This alpha will be followed by a longer and more open beta for 360, Xbox One, PS3, and PS4 in July. Full registration details for the beta are yet to be confirmed but you can currently confirm a place and receive a code immediately by pre-ordering from several major retailers including Amazon.

The Crew (PC)

If you blinked during the Ubisoft presser then you could have easily missed this one. In fact I did miss it myself on Monday night and only found out about it by accident earlier today. The closed beta for Ubisoft’s long-awaiting open world racing title will start on 23rd July and is currently listed as being PC exclusive.

Registrations are still open at the time of publication and you can sign up by visiting this site and logging in with your UPlay account. This one is likely to be less popular than the other two because of the single format and the game in question but it’s still going to be worth checking out and obviously won’t cost you a penny.

And one more thing..

An exclusive Evolve closed beta has also been confirmed for Xbox One this Autumn and no doubt it will be joined by more as we move ever closer to the crucial holiday period. You can check out the new trailer for Evolve below but any non-Xbox One owners be forewarned that it’s likely to induce some severe jealousy.

Avatar: Legend of Korra S3 Trailer

0

The ‘Avatar’ series has always been something I have quite enjoyed. The original series, ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ had a solid run throughout my early teenage years, and I found myself thoroughly enjoying the various adventures and solid character development within the series.

The film…well, the less said about that the better.

‘The Legend of Korra’ has had little trouble bending my feels, despite some hiccups. Yes, instead of having an overall series villain they seem to be running the course of ‘one villain per season’…but with each season the characters seem to grow. I loved the idea of giving the plight of Non-Benders the spotlight in the first season, and the idea of a civil war in the second…

But what now? At the end of Season 2 (SPOILERS), Korra lost her connection to all previous Avatars, meaning that she can no longer call upon the wisdom of the past Avatars to guide her actions. Additionally, the spirit portals are left open to allow Humans and Spirits to coexist with one another.

Season (or Book) 3 is called Change, and no doubt the presence of spirits will have some effect on the world of ‘Avatar’. From the new trailer, we can only question…is this change for better, or for worse?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A0UBbzeFc74

Once again, we have a ‘silent’ trailer for the upcoming season…allowing the art and oh so sweet action to capture our imagination. It doesn’t give too much of the plot, which in my opinion is fantastic as it allows us to focus on the visual magnificence which helps define the series. We get to see some action, some new characters, and even some old faces…such as the ex-Firelord Zuko working with the White Lotus…following in the footsteps of Uncle Iroh…

No release date so far, but there has been a hiccup for the producers in that the Spanish Dubs of the first six episodes were released on Nickelodeon’s Mexican affiliate ‘MundoNick’ around the time post-production was completed earlier this June…

I still can’t wait.

Trailer for Alec Gillis’ creature feature Harbinger Down revealed.

0

harbingerdown-G+-event-banner+

The trailer for Harbinger Down the upcoming sci-fi creature feature written/directed by Alec Gillis and produced by Tom Woodruff, Jr of Amalgamated Dynamics is here and film fans that can remember when CGI wasn’t slathered all over the screen are going to love it.

For anyone that doesn’t know, the pair are responsible for some of the most memorable and iconic imagery and practical FX work in film including The Terminator, Alien, Aliens,Predator, Starship Troopers, Tremors and plenty more. The pair also worked on 2011’s prequel to John Carpenter’s classic The Thing but their work was either heavily augmented or replaced by digital FX.

Disheartened at the film industry shunning practical FX in favor of digital imagery the pair reached out to their fans on Kickstarter and said they’d put all their skills and knowledge from decades in the industry into a film which celebrated practical FX like films used to and Harbinger Down is the result.

The film centres around a group of grad students who have booked passage on skipper Graff’s (Lance Henriksen) fishing trawler Harbinger to study the effects of global warming on a pod of Orcas in the Bering Sea. When the ship’s crew dredges up a piece of old Soviet space wreckage entombed in ice, they find out that the Russians had been experimenting on tardigrades, tiny resilient creatures capable of surviving in space. After decades frozen in ice they’re waking up, mutated and the creatures aren’t about to give up the warmth of human companionship.

Magicka 2 Announced For PC And PS4

0

Many of you will have played the ridiculous and hilarious game that is Magicka. Well now it’s back, bigger and better than before.

Just announced at E3, the sequel to the best-selling slice of wizardly insanity will be coming to PC and Playstation 4 with everything you loved from the first game plus a load more. Set in the ravaged land of Midgard following the Wizard Wars, Magicka 2 promises to bring the player into a dynamic new story with a set of exciting new features.

The New Stuff:

  • 4 Player Friendly Fire Co-Op: All game modes now support co-op, including checkpoints, hot-joining and more supportive functionality.
  • New Adventures: “Witness a Midgard mostly purged of Wizard-kind, save for a few remaining madmen, and encounter hordes of fantasy creatures great and small.”
  • Make It Rain (with a water staff): All new staffs, robes, weapons and special abilities so you can play the custom Wizard of your choice.
  • The Art Of Artifacts: New “Artifact” system offers “new gameplay changes and options to put new twists on each level”

Information is obviously limited at the moment but if a trailer featuring an unemployed wizard accidentally blowing up his cat doesn’t get you going then maybe Magicka isn’t the game for you. You may also be the more normal one in this conversation.

A release date is unannounced as yet but you can keep up to date and find more information at www.magicka2.com

New Trailer for Sin City: A Dame to Kill For

0

The sequel to Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller’s 2005 beautifully stylised noir hit finally graces our screens late August (the release date is still moving about a little). Sin City: A Dame to Kill For has been one of the most anticipated sequels in recent years since it’s announcement, but unless you’re a fan of the original graphic novels, the details offered in the trailers have been vague.

Earlier today, a fabulous lengthier third trailer hit the web and boy, it’s a beauty. The trailer is more structured than what we have seen so far, offering an insight into the new characters, as well as reminders of those returning for round two. The cast is one excellent line-up, with returning roles from the likes of Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba and Bruce Willis, along with new faces such as Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Josh Brolin. For fans of neo-noir and gritty graphic novels, Sin City is visually stunning wet dream and it looks like the sequel will not disappoint.

Enough of my jabbering, here’s the latest trailer for Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, which hits the big screen later this year.
