A Legend Passes: Leonard Nimoy Dies Aged 83

0

nimoy1

A great sadness washes over us all as we confirm the passing of Leonard Nimoy. Known for his iconic role as Spock in Star Trek, a role that spanned decades, Nimoy has become a legend within the realms of science fiction.

Reported in the New York Times, his wife Susan Bay Nimoy confirmed the actor died of end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. In January, Nimoy revealed that he was suffering with COPD despite quitting smoking 30 years ago. Towards the end of last week the news came that Nimoy had been rushed to hospital with severe chest pains.

Leonard Nimoy is one of the greatest geek legends. Though no one can argument that his biggest and greatest role was that of the emotionally distantand ever logical, half human half vulcan Spock, we would do him a disservice not mention his other contributions to our culture. Other acting roles include the voice if Galvatron in the original Transformers: The Movie and more recently as Dr. William Bell in the TV series Fringe.  Not just an actor Leonard Nimoy could sing and released a total of five albums. His first two featured science fiction songs, the one that was particularly well received and revived in the wake of the LOTR franchise – The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins. Also a writer, poet and keen photographer, his talent knew no bounds.

Ever the amazing human being, Leonard Nimoy gave us one last message before he passed

Dragon Ball Xenoverse Review

0

Dragon Ball games often carry a “been there done that” feeling with them. They’ve often rehashed the same story that everyone is used to, being the Freiza, Cell and Buu saga’s, and then maybe throwing in a movie or two for good measure. You know what to expect in regards to story, and that can definitely diminish the appeal of your new ‘Z’ game. This latest instalment, however, side steps this predicament by introducing time-travel, alterations to known stories and, of course, character customisation. Whether this new angle on the story entices you or seems far too predictable, watching Vegeta act as Ginyu in their cringe-worthy entrance animation is well worth the time alone.

Character creation is very much the core of the game. Your character, whether it be Human, Saiyan, Majin and so on, will act as the primary character within your adventure, with each race having certain advantages and disadvantages. Decreased health but increased attack power benefits and Saiyan race, all whilst Humans are middle of the road within stat advantages/disadvantages, but they do recover Ki quickly.

From your race choice, you’re able to determine your play style throughout your adventure, specifically whether you’ll start off with Ki based moves, physical, or a mixture of both. Regardless of what moves you start with, you can always go visit one of the many shops and NPC’s littered throughout Xenoverse’s clunky hub world. Yes, they’re still a thing.

The hub world in all it’s…err…glory?

Throughout your time of Xenoverse, every single action outside of fighting will be done within the hub world. Whether it be skill shops, clothing shops that feature stat-boosting nostalgia armour for everyone (Radditz’s costume, for example), or bumping into Krillin for a sparring match so he can become your master (yes, I did choose Krillin over other people, obviously), this Hub World is the backbone of the game.

Want to continue with story? Be my guest. Side missions to level up? Go on ahead. Unfortunately, multiplayer, both online and offline, are also located within this world, forgoing the more commonly used Multiplayer choice on the main menu. By forcing players down the path of selecting main menu, selecting your character, waiting for the unusually long load times, running to the relevant section of the hub world (split into three sections with, yes, loading in-between each), then talking to NPC’s to set a multiplayer match in, it looses the simplicity that all games ultimately need and deserve.

As stated previously, this game borrows basic RPG elements to add a much needed depth to the formula. Whilst race impacts underlying statistics, you’ll level up and equip cosmetic items, such as armour, to otherwise effect the rest of your stats throughout your time as your custom character. Through battles, regardless of whether they are story or parallel (side) missions, will earn you experience points that you can allocate to character stats, such as Ki power, Physical power, etc. You’ll also earn money during the course of the game which you can spend on copious amounts of cosmetics and skills.

Whilst I initially thought that this would be a tacked on feature, the need to grind to level up was much needed, especially so at the beginning of the game. Having to grind side missions so I was strong enough to able to beat Nappa and Vegeta in the same match made me question my worth as a gamer. After a few missions and the full aforementioned Radditz gear now attached to my characters Saiyan physique, I got my long overdue revenge… Only to later get my unmentionables handed to me against Recoome. Back to the hyperbolic time chamber to train up.

The first few hours with the game can unfortunately be quite tedious, surprisingly mainly due to the custom character. Whilst it is obvious that they aren’t going to give you the coolest moves at the beginning of the game, the quality of attacks, both physical and Ki, are underwhelming, leaving you not only the desire to become stronger, but the question of how long you are able to sit through this. Yamcha is a god compared to you, despite being the heralded saviour that Shenron bought forth to save time.

The stills in the game truly show how beautiful the game can be.

Graphically, the game is a treat on the eyes. The simplicity of the graphics reflect the animation style that fans are accustomed to, whilst still offering the detail needed to stand out. I did often have brightness issues in the game, despite the settings being correct, where gameplay, both within battles and in the hub world, would be far darker than other games on the same system, and infant it’s own menu bar. The changes in brightness did detract from how immersed I was within the game, and I hope this will be rectified with a patch soon.

Controlling the character itself can initially be difficult, having to learn the mechanics of fights, and putting all you’ve learnt into practice when there are multiple enemies and team mates on screen all at once only helps confuse the situation, but it eventually all becomes straightforward. Whilst I’d never say I was completely comfortable with this, I did learn the mechanics well enough to still have a good time and feel competent.

Regardless of any criticisms I have of the game, however, it was just pure, simple, extravagant fun. Yes, long load times and an unnecessary hub world have somewhat soured the experience for me, but I spent so long focused on levelling my character up and unlocking more cosmetic items so I look the part truly kept me busy and entertained. And whilst I’ve made little mention of the character cast outside of the obvious, there’s something for new and old fans alike. This is fan service to the highest degree, a love letter to those who grew up with the series and still secretly wish they could throw their own Kamehama blasts on the odd occasion. Keep on trying, friends.

It’s Mothrlickin’ Morphing Time: Joseph Kahn’s Power Rangers Masterpiece

0

Joseph Kahn has taken a bit of Tarantino and a whole load of swearing, added some awesome fight scenes and come out with a pure work of art.

James Van Der Beek and Katee Sackhoff (swoon) star in one of the most kick ass Power Rangers fan films ever. Its darker than adventure time on downers and definitely NSFW, but alas there is a safer version, if you are in to puppies and kittens.

Joseph Kahn has written in the video description “… not a pilot, not for profit, strictly for exhibition. this is a bootleg experiment not affiliated or endorsed by Saban Entertainment or Lionsgate nor is it selling any product. I claim no rights to any of the characters (don’t send me any money, not kickstarted, this film is free)”

Kahn has collected various music production awards for videos such as ‘Toxic’ by Britney Spears and Eminem’s ‘Love the way you lie’, and even directed the film ‘Torque’ in 2004.

The video simply titled POWER/RANGERS on youtube has everything you need in a fan film; robots, high tech gizmos, guns, gore (so much gore!) and BEWBS!

Agent Carter : A Show That Deserves Renewal

0

It may have escaped your attention recently, but Marvel has been consistently nailing good television on the head with the mini-series Agent Carter. It’s a show that hasn’t yet reached the UK shores, but I’m telling you now it’s a show that deserves far more than it’s limited 8 episode run.

For starters it’s centred around Agent Peggy Carter, (who you may remember as Captain America’s almost sweetheart back in Captain America: The First Avenger), and her role for the Strategic Scientific Reserve in the wake of WW2. This is the first female centric superheroed outing we’ve had in a long time and as far as heroines go, Marvel really could not have done a better job in casting the lead Hayley Atwell. Managing to encapsulate both femininity and strength in her role, Atwell proves that Peggy isn’t a damsel in distress by any means, but rather a force to be reckoned with in her own right. Not only that, the show highlights the sexism of the era and one woman’s ability to fight against it.

AgentCarter-101-02

The story itself is well paced, with the main plot following Peggy’s journey to clear Howard Stark’s name after he is embroiled in a weapons scandal. Throw into the mix then, a Russian agent hailing from an early form of The Red Room, a charming butler, a plucky waitress, and half a dozen SSR agents and you’ve got the perfect mixture to set your story in motion and keep it fleshed out. In fact, I’d have to say the supporting cast really does breathe life into the story and give it a sense of tangible realism by being just as diverse as the world around us today.

Take Enver Gjokaj for example in his role as Daniel Sousa, a man injured while fighting during WW2. Sousa walks with the aid of a crutch, but that crutch doesn’t define him. It’s a part of his day to day life, sure, but it isn’t all he is. Through every episode, it’s showcased his other skills as an agent from combat to reconnaissance to interrogation. He’s a positive role model to have and it’s still relevant to the story without him being thrown in to tick a few diversity boxes.

EVApLlk

Another bit of writing I have to commend is the clear signs of PTSD Agent Thompson (Chad Michael Murray) managed to bring to light. It’s easy to turn this kind of period piece into a testosterone overload, to let the men wade off to war and come back from it unchanged. The world doesn’t work that way and Marvel really helped to highlight that by showing a different aspect of being war wounded. The wound may not be physical, but the scars are still there – raw and healing and I think the fact that it was acknowledged is such a step in the right direction towards accurate portrayals of all walks of life.

As if accurate representation and strong female role models weren’t enough to convince you that Agent Carter both needs and deserves a second season, then take a look at the stellar work performed by costume designer Giovanna Ottobre-Melton. A production isn’t quite itself without a good set of threads to help set the scene and tone and the costumes featured don’t disappoint. From the crisp clean cut of a waitress’ uniform right through to the prim and proper suits worn by Peggy’s proverbial partner in crime fighting, Edwin Jarvis, there’s such an attention to detail here. It’s stylish and period authentic, two things which again I find contribute unreservedly to the real-world feel of the entire show. The highlight for me so far, has definitely been Sousa’s sweater vest collection and even just for the knitwear alone, I’m proudly waving my flag to show support for a second season.

agent-carter

There are so many directions the show could go on, with so much scope and possibility for adding colour and texture to an ever growing universe. The MCU movies thus far have laid the ground work, but it’s series’ like Agents of SHIELD and now Agent Carter that are helping to fill in some of the blanks and give the universe the depth it deserves. The cast has a chemistry that can’t be manufactured, the setting and design is undeniably magnificent and I think by all rights Agent Carter deserves the chance to shine for a little longer.

So please studio executives, renew Agent Carter for a second season, or at the very least find a way to make it across the pond for UK syndication!

The Book is Always Better – Great Literature We Think Should Get The Hollywood Treatment

0

booklove

Books. We love books. According to Forbes.com, consumers spend $5.25 Billion annually on Amazon.com just on books. E-books accounted for just 30% of all book sales. That’s a lot of dough, but they could make so much more off of these ideas. Now, do you remember the first novel you ever read? Probably not if you are anything like me. OK, time for a different kind of question, Do you remember the first book you ever thought would undoubtedly translate well into a movie or TV series? Yeah you do. Throughout my 30 years I have read many things that I believe would be big money in the TV and film industry. Here are a few of the top choices from my files.

Not only do these need to be made like yesterday, if you haven’t read them, you really should.

The Eyes of The Dragon by Stephen King

the-eyes-of-the-dragon

This one is different from other Stephen King novels. While it is still definitely him and his style, it just doesn’t fit our idea of what Mr. King usually gives us. Set in the age of dragons and Kings, a murder mystery that rocks the high court and Land of Delain. The King has been murdered and soon his eldest son, Peter, is locked in the Needle as the main suspect by Flagg the royal magician.

Thomas inherits the throne much to Flaggs delight. Well, Peter knows the truth because he watched the murder happen. He has a plan to save Delain from the wicked plans of Flagg but it is risky. It is do or die time.

The Gate to Women’s Country by Sherri S. Tepper

Gatetowomenscountry

This post-apocalyptic novel written in 1988 describes a world set three hundred years into the future after a catastrophic war which has fractured the United States into several nations. The setting of the story is Women’s Country, apparently in the former Pacific Northwest. They have evolved in the direction of Ecotopia, reverting to a sustainable economy based on small cities and low-tech local agriculture. They have also developed a matriarchy where the women and children live within town walls (so-called women’s country) with a small number of male servitors, while the other the men live outside the town in warrior camps. Not all is as it seems though in this relatively peaceful place. Soon Stavia, our heroine, the yougest daughter of Morgot, a top dog in the Marthatown council, discovers the many secrets that Women’s Country holds.

These two books in particular have always stuck with me. They are quite possibly two of my favorite books ever written. Now with that being said, I was torn until recently about if I really wanted them to see these made these into films. They’d likely fuck it up and I’d end up hating myself for even mentioning the idea. We all saw what happened to Timeline by Michael Crichton. What a train wreck. After a lot of thinking though, it was decided that the movies have never ruined the book for me no matter how awful the translation is. “The book is always better” is the popular opinion. But I would still love to see the attempt at least. It would also be a different idea. We have these waves in entertainment. All of a sudden every big movie producer is coming out with military themed movies, next it’s zombies, and so on. I would much rather see a trend of a different kind. One in which we focus on incredible books being made into movies. There really are so many out there.

I felt these next ones wouldnt translate into feature film very well. They seem more of a television show type stories. Easily enough novels in the series’ to cover a few season and it wouldn’t be difficult to develop new story lines if the show keeps renewing.

Amelia Peabody Series by Elizabeth Peters

This series has 18 fictional novels and one non-fiction book (plenty of material). The series was published between 1975 and 2010, with a final installment that was in editing at the time of the author’s death slated for release on April 6th 2015.

Amelia-peabody-elizabeth-peters

The books span a thirty-nine-year period from 1884 to 1923, which coincides with the period of the British administration of Egypt after the Anglo-Egyptian War. Amelia Peabody is introduced in the series’ first novel, Crocodile on the Sandbank as a confirmed spinster, suffragist, and scholar, living in England in 1884. She inherits a fortune from her father and leaves England to see the world, with the side benefit of escaping various suitors and family members who were neither aware that she would be the sole beneficiary of her father’s estate nor that he had amassed a small fortune over the course of his lifetime. In Rome, Amelia meets Evelyn Barton-Forbes, a young Englishwoman of social standing who has run off with (and subsequently been abandoned by) her Italian lover, and the two make their way to Egypt. In Egypt Amelia continues to find mysteries to solve relating to ancient Egyptian lore. Trouble always seems to find her.

I can see this one having a Warehouse 13 feel to it. If you’re familiar with Egyptology then you recognize the back stories to the mysteries. There are so mnay characters they could easily have filler episodes. I just think they really need to consider the idea. Sure some of the books are from the 1980’s, but they are truly great ones.

Aquaman Unleashed

0

So as I’m sure many of you have seen, the first image of Jason Momoa as Aquaman was unveiled earlier. If, you haven’t seen it, the image is below. For those of you that have, despite the character’s departure from the orange top most frequently seen in the comics, I think we can all agree he’s looking pretty darn cool. When you’ve got someone like Jason Momoa, in all his testosterone fuelled glory of musculature, you’re hardly going to cover him up. Hence, rippling pecs and a more warrior-like look that, aside from fitting better to the actor, may give an intriguing hint as to the direction that Zack Snyder and co. plan to take with the character.

Momoa will first cameo as Aquaman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (to be released March 25th, 2016) before appearing in Justice League Part One (2017) and then, finally, getting his solo film in 2018. Aside from the difference in look, which is hinting more towards the rough and tough king portrayal which most commonly sees the Atlantean sporting a hook hand and ignores the blonde hair of the original by favouring Momoa’s naturally dark colouring with nothing more than blonde highlights in his hair, it is notable that the poster bears the tagline “Unite the Seven”. The natural, and obvious, assumption would be to guess that this is a reference to the Seven Seas, particularly given Snyder’s accompanying tweet of “There is only one true king”. To take the tagline this way merely tells us that the portrayal is presumably committing hard to the Atlantean royalty aspect of the character. To look at it in a different way though, we may see that the Seven could in fact refer to the League (Batman, Wonder Woman, Superman, Green Lantern, Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg if we focus on the likely core group). If so, we may be seeing more character reveals sooner than expected.

However the Seven tag plays out, it can be agreed for sure that Momoa is looking incredible. Say what you will about Zack Snyder but he sure knows how to present with style. Hopefully we’ll be hearing more about the upcoming film soon and maybe seeing more character profiles. Until then, check out the Aquaman picture below and tell us what you think on Facebook, Twitter or in the comments below.

Why Aren’t You… Playing Couch Co-op?

0

Let me take you back a while, to the early 2000s. George W. Bush was just starting to show that massive head injuries are no barrier to the highest office in the world, Linkin Park were crawling in all of our skins, and many people still had modems that screeched down the phone lines like a scorned ex.

Most importantly, Microsoft’s first foray into the console market, the Xbox, was launched. We’d all heard about this new machine for years in gaming magazines, so it was a major moment in our young gaming lives, a whole new console from the people responsible for all the PC gaming we’d enjoyed on good old Windows 95 and XP.

One of my best friends at the time was lucky enough to get an Xbox on release. His father texted him on his Nokia 3210 that the package had arrived, and he invited me round to his house to try it and this new game Halo out. Having ordered two controllers, my friend wanted to play co-op.

This was a strange idea for us, as most split-screen games at that time, such as Goldeneye, were competitive, but here was an option for the two of us to play together against the hordes of enemies. I took the player 2 controller, nodded to him, and we prepared to save the Universe.

This kind of co-operative gameplay is known as Couch Co-op now, due to the increases in online speeds and the (generally) reliable PSN, XBL, and Steam-like services gamers can now access  changing the way we play to be exclusively online. And I’m as much of a Sunbro as the next gamer, but there’s something unique about Couch Co-op. Playing Halo through, the two of us, that afternoon and evening was an amazing experience, and we went to bed smiling about our experiences.

And I don’t think enough people have had this joy.

Anyone who ever played split-screen games back when they were your only option, or who has a spouse they share games like Castle Crashers with, will tell you that having competitors or comrades in the same room changes the experience. You can actually turn to your friend and laugh in their face, or high five, or pause to try and stop choking on your drink.

A good friend of mine had  a LAN party for their birthday, eight people playing on two Xbox 360s and two TVs in the same room. We played Left 4 Dead 1&2 primarily, and it was one of the best parties I’ve ever been to: the shouts of fury, the hilarity of sneaking up on a friend and choking them with your distended tongue, just making it through the end of a level by the skin of your teeth… these are memories I’ll have for ever, and it wouldn’t have been the same in an eight person party held across the country.

Whilst a lot of games nowadays are built around online gameplay, there are still some which work for Couch Co-op. Diablo 3’s console release, the aforementioned Left 4 Dead, and the excellent Borderlands series, to name a few. The idea isn’t dead, though it seems to be wounded. Which is sad, as beating a challenge together like this is the closest most of us will ever get to the Saturday morning cartoon feeling of triumphing over evil throught the power of friendship.

If you’re anything like me, it is an effort to get dressed, put all your rubbish into a bin, and fend off the dire rats which have infested your kitchen in order to entertain guests. But it’s worth it: you don’t get any lag, you get a completely different dynamic to online play, and, if you know your partner(s) well, you could play drinking/strip co-op. So, tell me, why aren’t you playing Couch Co-op?

Neill Blomkamp to direct next ‘Alien’ movie- our thoughts!

0

551e915c6c2f1f6fd9a299223652dea98321fce3_jpg__846x0_q80

Just when I thought my day couldn’t get any better…

After what could be seen as either an excellent piece of free advertising for a future 20th Century Fox release, or a director using social media to position himself into directing a film purely on internet buzz, Neill Blomkamp has just announced that he has been hired to direct the next movie in the iconic ‘Alien’ franchise, a few months after ‘leaking’ a range of exquisite concept art based on his original story ideas.

Blomkamp has emerged as one of the freshest new talents in the resurgent Sci-Fi genre, with the excellent ‘District 9’, the flawed but highly entertaining ‘Elysium’, and the upcoming ‘Robocop’ meets ‘Short Circuit’ feature ‘Chappie’ (which looks like a ton of fun), showing that he can deliver the type of gritty, action-packed Sci-Fi that fans of the Alien franchise have longed for since ‘Alien Resurrection’ reared its ugly head in 1997 (whose idea was it to colour the xenomorphs brown?! They all look like walking, drizzling turds!).

In my opinion, the timing of this announcement couldn’t have been any better. With the fantastic ‘Alien Isolation’ game having been released to almost universal critical acclaim recently, interest in the franchise has definitely become renewed. Combine that with the fact that the missed opportunity that was Ridley Scott’s ‘Prometheus’ is still relatively fresh in the minds of the fans – the general negativity and confusion that surrounded that film’s release, would almost certainly give Blomkamp the leverage to reintroduce the horror and action aspects that made the original film and it’s direct sequel so vibrant and revolutionary (and which was almost non-existent in ‘Prometheus’). Let’s also not forget about the death last year of the ‘father’ of the alien itself, H.R. Giger – a new Alien movie would be the perfect way to celebrate his incredible creature design and his art in general.

alien002 299da6283a880fc4d3090632dcf2e0be27962962_jpg__846x0_q80

From the beautifully rendered concept art, the tone of the movie looks to be firmly placed in the James Cameron ‘Aliens’ timeline, with a much older Ripley and Hicks featuring heavily. Whether or not this indicates a ret coning of sorts of the franchise, essentially wiping out both ‘Alien3’ and ‘Resurrection’ in the process (which, let’s be honest, wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world) is unclear – but I’m sure the problem of **Spoiler!** bringing Hicks (i.e. the human shish kebab) back could be solved easily by a spot of cloning – it worked for Ripley!

A few other points from the concept art that interest me:

  • The ‘Space Jockey’ ship in a massive warehouse – fantastic image, but is this the original ship from LV-426, or a newly captured ship? I just hope it’s not the one from the end of ‘Prometheus’. This could either suggest that the usual ‘evil’ Weyland Yutani corp will be involved in the story, or perhaps the ship has been picked up by accident – both leading to the inevitable alien breakout/slaughter everyone scene.
  • Ripley seems to be wearing a suicide/bomb vest in one photo – is this a suggestion that she sacrifices herself? Will this finally be the end for the character? As much as I think that Sigourney Weaver has been an amazing constant in this franchise, I’ve always been interested in seeing an Alien movie without Ripley as the main protagonist. One of my absolute favourite non-movie Alien stories was the incredible ‘Aliens: Book 2’ Dark Horse graphic novel – with it’s beautiful air-brushed artwork, and a story involving a grown-up Newt and a grizzled veteran Hicks struggling to survive an alien outbreak aboard a ship escaping Earth. Without the shadow of Ripley, the others had the space (even in a short 4-issue comic) to evolve into fully realised characters, and not just Ripley’s buddies in action.

I’d love to see this happen with the new film – by all means, have Weaver/Ripley involved initially before having her die heroically, thus setting up other characters that can take the franchise forward (in the same way that Heather Langenkamp/Nancy did in ‘Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors’ – sorry to use a totally unrelated franchise). Oh, and when it comes to new characters, let’s have some stars of merit please, not just a bunch of carbon-copy marines/scientists to be used as cannon-fodder!

  • Ripley in the weird Alien hybrid suit – now this looks fucking awesome! Is this some sort of disguise for her to infiltrate the alien lair? Could this be some sort of ‘Alien Resurrection’ type clone? I know that it mentions “Space Jockey” and “Pilot”, but surely this is closer to the look of the actual alien and not the Space Jockey (as ruined forever by ‘Prometheus’ – it’s a bloody albino John Cena in a suit?! Not in my Alien Universe!).
  • Ripley and the “Xeno” – very mysterious. In what could either be a cocooned victim of the alien (ala Brett from the ‘Alien’ director’s cut), or some sort of new creature, we clearly see Ripley looking shocked or upset. This creature reminds me of a Flood victim from ‘Halo’, a Bloater or Jockey from ‘Left 4 Dead’, or the Fifield monster from ‘Prometheus’ (although I seriously doubt Fox would want any actual cross over between that film and the new ‘Alien’). I’m very interested to see where this one goes, as I’ve quite enjoyed the attempts to introduce new creatures into the Alien universe, such as the Newborn (probably the only part I enjoyed in ‘Resurrection’) and the Pred-Alien (admittedly only because it was fucking ludicrous – the AVP films were both shite of the highest order).

Please note: This is just me speculating and I doubt any of this will actually happen. Anyone else have any predictions/thoughts on this concept art and how it could fit into the overall Alien franchise? And what are your thoughts on the announcement of the movie itself? Should this or ‘Prometheus 2’ take priority for Fox?

Sigourney Weaver, who is part of the cast of ‘Chappie’, recently stated on Coming Soon that she was very interested in being part of a new movie “if it was (directed by) someone as talented as Neill” – having Weaver on board would be definitely help Blomkamp to deal with Fox and the demands of their executives/stockholders.

In closing, I would say that I am extremely pleased to see this movie going ahead. ‘Alien’ is my favourite movie of all time, and to have its next sequel in the hands of a young, innovative director who is an actual fan of the series, definitely helps calm any nerves I had over the studio’s intentions going forward. I just hope they leave him alone to craft this film with an original vision, a good cast and a decent budget (let’s not forget the quality that Blomkamp was able to achieve with a minuscule budget on ‘District 9’ – think of what he can do with a proper Hollywood budget) – and that this doesn’t go through the same Development Hell process that both ‘Alien3’ and ‘Prometheus’ went through.

Looking forward to seeing Sharlto Copley turn up in a random cameo too – perhaps he’ll be a facehugger haha.

Ghostbusters Board game on Kickstarter!

The iconic film and cartoon many of us remember from our childhoods is getting it’s own hobby gamer version courtesy of the board game publishing giants, Cryptozoic Entertainment who have the DC Deck builder series, the Walking Dead board game (the bad pretty one, not the good ugly one) and the Adventure Time Card Wars game amongst their huge array of licensed titles on the market.

How does it play? Well I better let Crypto explain:

Ghostbusters: The Board Game is an episodic adventure game for one to four players, who are charged with busting ghosts and sealing gates to the Spirit World. The game is customizable, cooperative, and highly re-playable. It features unique illustrations and figures based on original artwork and designs by Dan Schoening, the artist of IDW’s Ghostbusters comic book series. Each Ghostbuster has a distinct role and unlocks unique abilities by gaining experience. The game offers modes for different levels of players, making it accessible to beginners and challenging to experts. Now is your chance to save the world!

Now a lot of you will be pretty excited (DON’T CROSS THE STREAMS!), as was I. It looks like it’ll be pacey,  playable on your own or with three friends, and feature fan-favourites like Slimer, Zool and of course, the Stay Puft marshmallow man.

All the original Ghostbusters are included in the game

Crypto are using Kickstarter to bring this game to the general populace. Now, putting aside my slight dislike for big companies using Kickstarter as a pre-sales system, it’s clear that Ghostbusters is going to be a big hit, having smashed it’s $250000 target already and now knocking over stretch goals with gusto.

Already unlocked, the iconic Ghostbuster vehicle with the WAAR WAAR siren

Just be wary. Crypto are notoriously hit and miss with their games, often fronting the IP ahead of the game play or making a game big and expensive without delivering on the fun factor. Just from watching the video, I was left with the impression that the Ghostbuster franchise was very much being used to wow-up a fairly basic game. Don’t get me wrong; there’s absolutely nothing wrong with simple games, I’m just cautious when the only people they feature in the video appear to be cosplayers and not hobby gamers themselves. I just hope my fears are unjustified, as this is a great looking game with some cracking looking miniatures and a ton of extra gubbins to add if you want the full game experience.

So who ya gonna call? I’ll let you decide……
