J. Michael Straczynski’s Rising Stars Headed For Big Screen

0

Deciding that late is better than never when it comes to jumping aboard a lucrative bandwagon, MGM have this week optioned the rights to turn J. Michael Straczynski’s super-hero comicbook Rising Stars into a movie, hoping perhaps that audiences have at least a few more years of tolerance for the spandex and capes set in them yet. No stranger to the film business having lent his pen to Marvel Studios‘ Thor and Paramount’s World War Z, JMS is set to write the script himself with Alex Gartner and Richard Suckle producing for Atlas Entertainment.rising1

Released as a mini-series in 1999, Rising Stars follows the lives of 113 men and women who, before they were born, were exposed to an unknown radiation when a comet fell to Earth in the outskirts of their small town, USA, The story is told in flashback by the last of the 113, a man named “Poet”, still alive many years later and covers how the children went from local oddities to government research subjects, to full-blown super-heroes and -villains and how their presence on the world stage changed everything. In the comics Poet is forced to abandon a life of solitude when it is discovered that when one of their number dies, their power is shared among the survivors, and heroes and villains alike are starting to turn up dead as one of the 113 makes a play for ultimate power.

Bringing new twists to a familiar genre, a Rising Stars movie is something to get very excited for, even if it manages to only capture a fraction of the brilliance of the comicbook.

Peekaboom Review

peekaboom

There has been a resurgence in recent months for quick-start games. Usually played at the beginning or end of a tabletop gaming session, these easy-to-learn/carry/play affairs are enjoyable little breaks in what can be quite serious gameplay that offer a change of pace or an introduction to the noob gamer.

Another use of these games, such as Love Letter, Zombie Dice, and Hey! That’s My Fish are ice breakers that help build relationships between the players and test friendships in a fun and challenging way.

Peekaboom (not to be confused with the “ESP” game of the same name) is no exception to this genre. With its blend of fast paced action and devious game mechanics, rounds can be over in seconds, with games lasting minutes. With the addition to the fact that this is a card game, Players aren’t required keep track of a million pieces which lends itself to the speediness of the gameplay.

You have two decks to play with. One is a set of numbered, pictured, coloured cards, the other contains instructions. Each team take one of the instructions and show it among themselves. This is how you “detonate” your bomb after building it. The method by which you build the bomb is by acquiring a “three of a kind” with the other deck (3 colours/numbers/ pictures). There are no turns to take, and your hand only consists of 3 cards, leading to a frantic swapping and discarding. When you have “three of a kind” you can then carry out your instruction (I.e “rub your belly”), in the hope your team mate will spot this and yell the word “Boom”, in which you win the round.

The opposite team can counter this if they spot the gesture first and yell “snip”. This helps to builds the tension that makes the game really fun to play. The only downfalls are the packaging being sparce, and there being no way included to track the score. Maybe for the special edition?

All in all, I, and my gaming group,  enjoyed playing peekaboom and it helped break up long gaming sessions with fast paced, some times intense, and simple play.

Definarely worth having as a part of your gaming collection and a game my self and my friends will play again.

E3 Xbox 2016 Briefing, Announcements and reveals

xbox-one-e3

Well, for this Gamer Geek the announcement from our friends at Xbox came in a tidal wave of emotion. tears, cheers, sweaty palms and a burst of Excitement…. and that was just me.

New game titles, the promise of ‘cross play’ over both Xbox One and Windows 10, and the ability to play anywhere at no additional cost had the E3 auditorium erupt in rapturous applause and excited whooping..

Having slaked our appetites with their impressive opener, Xbox moved on with their big guns and on marched the spokesman for ‘The Coalition’; new game designers for veteran game franchise and one of the most anticipated games this year… Gears of War 4.

images

Gears Of War 4

The first title to feature play anywhere capability, which means you could be on a mission at home, save, go to work, then on your lunch break log into your Xbox account and pick up where you left off; both profile and achievements saved and ready to go.

Included in this would be the original story campaign, multiplayer and the brand new Horde mode! Co-Op can now be played over both Xbox One and Windows 10, with  backward and cross play compatibility.

With a new Gears comes a new story, new allies and worse, new meaner, bigger and badder nasties in the guise of ‘The Swarm’; GoW’s newest protagonist.

Where before we had the Locust horde; a new generation of Gears face off against what seems to be an unstoppable force: Juvies the humanoid foot soldiers that later evolve into Drones and Pouncers, powerful smart rodent like creatures; to name but a few.

https://youtu.be/9V-aBdWY2us

Enter James Dominic Fenix, Son of Marcus Fenix and Anya Stroud, he is the new Hero character in in Gears of War 4 and the main focus behind the games story it would seem; much like is father before him in the previous titles. But, again, like his father before him, he wont be alone and is joined by fellow Gear, Delmont Walker and Outsider Kait Diaz.

From the footage we were shown the AI for your team mates has vastly improved with team mates now ‘asking for help’ when needed or telling you they are pinned down and need covering fire; which for me will be a fantastic improvement over the previous games.

Visually the graphics are stunning and the orchestral music sounds impressive; which can only improve on the atmosphere of the game itself.

Gears of War 4 will drop 11th October with it being reviewed in depth at a later date. Oh and the best news of all ……….MARCUS FENIX RETURNS!

Following on from the Gears announcement, Xbox teased it’s new wireless controller dedicated to that most imposing of Gears Weapons; the Lancer. It’s design and paint job have me already salivating!

Killer Instinct

Keeping on the Gears of War theme, A new playable character, “General RAAM”  was announced for Killer Instinct!

Servers and more

Mike Ybarra, Programme Manager for Xbox One, came on next and announced. Xbox live will now have more Servers, making for faster and more reliable online gaming; backward compatibility; and new Features which include: Background Music so you can now play your own music in game; Preferred Language, so you can select the game in your own language with the flick of a switch; CORTANA comes to Xbox One and finally ‘Clubs’ which will allow players to create their own community: be it drivers, fighters or strategy gamers from around the world; included in this is the new feature ‘looking for group’ where you can put a call out for specific players.

Want a controller designed your way? Now you can with the new controller design capability. Xbox have promised “if you can design it, they can make it” any colour, any design and even have your profile handle engraved into it. No more arguing over who’s is who’s controller at home, with 8 million ways to personalise.

Other titles

On top of the above we had announcements for: Scalebound, We happy Few, Minecraft add-ons, Battlefield 1 (which looks bitching), Final Fantasy 15, Halo Wars 2 and many more.

We happy few caught my eye as it was very Bioshock esq, the tale of a plucky bunch of moderately terrible people trying to escape from a lifetime of cheerful denial. Set in a drug-fuelled, retrofuturistic city in an alternative 1960s England, you’ll have to blend in with its other inhabitants, who have their own set of not-so-normal rules. Wtih creepy characters sporting their own ‘Jokeresque’ grin and big piercing eyes, i can see We Happy Few being the new skin crawling game.

I look forward to its release

Future plans and the big Announcement:

Zelda: Breath of the Wild Amiibos and Wolf Link Support Revealed

0

Today’s Nintendo Treehouse event has brought good news for any Zelda fans that purchased the Wolf Link and Midna Amiibo along with the Twilight Princess HD remaster for the Wii U. Whilst we’re missing a partner character such as Navi or Midna for the upcoming game, Breath of the Wild, that doesn’t mean that it isn’t possible.

During the Treehouse event today, it has been announced that you can use the Wolf Link Amiibo to bring him to the world of the Wild. Using the Amiibo means that Wolf Link accompanies you during the game, helping out during combat and in hunting in order to help find food.

What’s the catch I hear you ask? When playing Breath of the Wild, when Wolf Link is brought to the game, he will have three hearts, or more if you used him during Twilight Princess HD. When playing the previous game, the point in which you completed the Cave of Shadows and tapped your Amiibo the the gamepad saved the amount of hearts that Wolf Link had. So, exciting news if you already own the Amiibo, as he’ll have those extra hearts. Once his life meter is depleted, Wolf Link will no longer be in the game. Not to fear, after 24 hours of real world time, you will be able to bring Wolf Link back to your game with his health restored.

Wolf-Link-Amiibo2

For me, this is a really exciting feature as it’s something totally new to the game. I do enjoy the design of Amiibos, but at the moment they’re more of something to look pretty on my shelf than something to actually utilise during a game.

That’s not all for the Amiibos however, as three new ones will be released along with the game and they are incredible detailed and rather stunning. We have Archer Link, Rider Link complete with a horse and a Guardian Amiibo, which is the first of it’s kind to feature pose-able parts. The first two are gorgeous, but whilst the Guardian looks cool, it does look a little impractical. Perhaps something saved for the shelf. Regardless, all three do look rather fabulous and I’m sure we’ll hear more about their functionality at a later date.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Gameplay Footage Revealed at E3

After a brief glance at the stunning new Zelda title, Breath of the Wild, the Nintendo Treehouse team sneakily tried to distract us with news on the latest Pokémon instalments, Sun and Moon. Whilst that all looked cute and pretty worthy of a play-through at some juncture, I’m sure that it wasn’t only me that was itching for them to get back to the good stuff. After almost an hour of Pokémon battles and exploration of the new Alola region, whilst this was the first live demonstration of it’s kind at this stage of development, it went on for far too long.

The-Legend-of-Zelda-Voice-Acting

Finally, we’re back and Nintendo have brought out the big guns in the way of the ever-adorable Eiji Aonuma. He knows exactly what we’re all waiting for and dives straight in with some gameplay footage. Also, I need his shirt. ‘Open your eyes’ echoes once again, with Link awakening and the Shrine of Resurrection. This all looks rather mysterious and a little sci-fi, introducing technology as a tool to Legend of the Zelda. Our hero fines the Sheikah Slate and some clothes, with Aounuma commenting that you could just play the game nude otherwise…

Link… You are the light – our light – that must shine upon Hyrule once again…

phpatos5v

Link can jump! He can finally bloody jump! He can climb walls and scale the mountains, this is glorious news. There is also a huge amount of items found around the world, which Link can just pick up, we even see him climbing a tree for apples which he then cooks. This is also something pretty new to the game, and he can incorporate all these new items in the gameplay. My word, the map looks absolutely ridiculous in size, and we’re only getting a glimpse with the Great Plateau.

We get a glimpse of of combat for the first time, with a focus on taking your enemies’ weapons after battling with them, as your own become damaged and can break. Health is found through food items, which all have a different heart container value, this is a total move away from replenishing your health through enemies dropping it and really putting a focus on making use of the resources found in the world. Link isn’t just going to find health by beating down enemies or chopping up grass this time, you’ve gotta work for those hearts. And nomm, all about the nomming.

vlcsnap-2016-06-14-12h03m57s118.0.0
There’s talk now about the stunning artwork of Breath of the Wild, heavily inspired by Japanese animation. It really does look beautiful and we’re getting a better idea of this as we see Link in action. The world offered up in this instalment, whilst reminiscent of previous Zelda games, also shares similarities with the modern and immersive RPGs such as Elder Scrolls or Witcher. This is a huge deal for Zelda fans, as we’re finally being treated to a truly vast world and an exploration on a whole new level. Another change here is a bigger focus on environmental sound, rather than the standard soundtracks which we all know and love. Fear not, these aren’t gone, there’s just more of an effort here to truly immerse us in this world.

That’s all for now, with promises of puzzle footage and more information on story elements later. You can tune in and joing the party below!

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

After a moment of silence for the Orlando victims, Reggie Fils-Aimé opens the Nintendo Treehouse event at E3 2016. He’s straight to the point with bringing up the focus of the live stream – The Legend of Zelda. Link has been with us for three decades now and apparently the upcoming game could totally change the thinking of the series so far once again. Time for the first trailer…

‘Open your eyes’ echoes as we see our hero riding, hunting, fishing, climbing, back-flipping and generally kicking ass. Whilst Link has certainly developed more moves over recent years, this is something entirely different. We see him controlling water to create platforms, scaling cliffs and wearing some pretty darn awesome armour. Oh, and that beautiful shot of the sword just before the title, dayum. Finally, after several years of waiting, we’re rewarded with the title of the next instalment, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

zeldaheader2
The game looks absolutely stunning and the name seems incredibly fitting. Reggie comments that Breath of the Wild brings us the adventure of a lifetime and not only does the world feel vast, but it feels alive. Apparently this game will be the biggest experience ever created by Nintendo and the folk at E3 this week will only be exploring a snippet of the huge world on offer.

Those lucky bastards at E3 will be exploring one single plateau of this vast world, and Reggie reckons they won’t even manage to explore this whole fraction over the next week. Breath of the Wild is going to break all boundaries of the previous titles in the series and be a huge deal for both the Wii U and the NX.

zeldagallery

There’s still been no indication of a release date for the title, other than a vague ‘2017’. We’re escorted over to a live play through of Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon as a distraction before the Zeldatastic fun continues. With Nintendo Treehouse still in full swing, I’m sure there will be more news to come later as we’re promised a whole day of Link’s latest adventures.

Game of Thrones: No One

Further Warning: This review has been identified to potentially trigger rage in people with ‘All Caps and Exclamation Mark Sensitivity’. Reader discretion advised.

If you are a Game of Thrones fan, then you will know the pain of watching a show that gives a bit with one hand and takes heavily with the other. So playing true to character, Season 6 has given us a revived Jon reuniting with Sansa, BrienneXTormund: the ship that we never knew we wanted, Coldhands and The Hound. Then it has taken Stannis, Hodor, Osha, Summer, Shaggydog, Areo Hotah, Doran Martell and a large number of hotly debated fan theories.

[EVERYTHING] The best scene of the episode... - Imgur

Is that you Syri.. oh no 🙁

After Episode 7: The Broken Man, the internet was teeming with hype for Clegane Bowl, Lady Stoneheart, Syrio Forel and an Arya that was suffering from multiple personality disorder a la Fight Club or was actually Jaqen H’ghar in disguise depending on which way round you were wearing your tinfoil hat. And whilst those theories were wild and somewhat preposterous, they also captured the imaginations and skyrocketed expectations of many fans. By the time we were all sitting down to watch Episode 8, I’m afraid the hype train had derailed and expectations were so monumental that when we actually got a more subtle tale about coming home, a tidal wave of disappointment washed over a large proportion of the fan base and media coverage.

DB8rJSJ - Imgur

Rest in peace, sweet tinfoil theories

Definitively I want to say that this wasn’t a bad episode of Game of Thrones, but it just wasn’t the episode that the fans wanted. I wasn’t immune to this feeling either, by the time the show had finished I felt completely deflated at first. And yet, I can’t help but think that whilst this episode will be known for some time as the point in Season 6 where the showrunners killed the hype, viewed again after some time, it will hold up as being just as good as the other episodes in this season.

Let me explain why.

Episode 8: No One, opens where the previous episode left off. Arya was stealthed by the Waif in Episode 7, and whilst it looked fairly horrific at the time, she seems to be mostly okay thanks to a combination of bandages, soup and Milk of the Poppy.

20160609_ep608_add_Publicity_still_04.001571321-1024x576

Someone being nice to a Stark? This won’t end well

It seems particularly clear on a second watch through that Arya didn’t know that the Waif had seen her spare Lady Crane’s life and that she thought at the very least, she would have more time to make her escape to Westeros. So when we saw her last week brazenly out in the open, booking passage to Westeros and flagrantly standing around on bridges, her lack of vigilance was due to her thinking she could get away before the Faceless Men could discover that she had not fulfilled her contract.

And whilst this is certainly the most boring outcome of Arya’s story arc, it makes a lot more sense than her having a psychotic break or Jaqen wearing her face to test the Waif. I still felt disappointed though. I wanted Arya to be on the front-foot after all of her training with the Faceless Men. I wanted to see her finally as this totally ominiscient badass assassin girl utterly victorious against the Waif. This is Game of Thrones though and we need to remember that. No victory for a character comes without a cost, and when you lose it’s usually death (unless you’re Ramsey Bolton). Take the Lannisters for example, they were on top and winnning the Game of Thrones and now they are on a downward spiral that could end with seeing their House completely wiped out.

Cersei-Mountain

Cersei: Queen of ‘I’m Not Fucking Around’

So it is fitting then that we go from Arya, a character who has made some terrible mistakes to another Cersei Lannister, who is paying the ultimate price for arming the Faith Militant. Cersei is probably one of my favourite characters; full of paradoxes – she can go from being wonderfully cunning to flabbergastingly stupid in a matter of moments – and yet she is nothing but consistent in her desires to protect her family and her House and to crush her enemies. So as those around her have had to bend to The High Sparrow’s wishes, she chooses not to.

Wildfyre
I choose violence

Even as her last remaining child Tommen, in an act of betrayal that would have Joffrey turning in his grave, seals her fate as he abolishes the practice of trial by combat (crushing many hopes for Cleganebowl this season), she is still planning to fight back. Olenna pointed out last season that Cersei was completely outnumbered, and yet she will not give up. Qyburn confirming ‘a rumour’ and Bran’s flashbacks earlier in the season seem to be foreshadowing the burning of Kings Landing by wildfyre and Cersei to be the one to light it up. If she does, then Dany’s visions in the House of the Undying will not just be a metaphor, but reality. It could very well be the case that by the time Daenerys has stormed Kings Landing to take the Iron Throne, there is literally nothing left for her to rule.

e8O1N2o

The ultimate irony

Ruling the Riverlands has been a focus of the show for the past couple of episodes, and here we see it finally reach it’s resolution. On the surface, this segment is another anti-climax. There is no siege of Riverrun, no clever subterfuge that allows the Tully army to escape, no duel between Jaime and the Blackfish. We are instead robbed of giving such a cool character a good send off as the Blackfish is killed offscreen as we hear about it from an extra. WTF? We all cried.

uocKOdQ

Goodbye you grumpy Sonovabitch

But in retrospect, I don’t think the Riverlands storyline was ever really about the siege, it was about exploring Jaime’s character. Seeing Brienne again and her trusting and believing in him, being surrounded by honourable knights (Brienne and Blackfish) we see Jaime holding himself up against their example. So in the scene between him and Edmure, he plays up to his persona as being this despicable, baby catapulting, big bad Lannister; but actually his plan allows for the Tully army to be disarmed without a significant loss of life. The Tully House can continue too without the death of Edmure. Yes seeing the Blackfish die offscreen was an anti-climax, but I genuinely think that Jaime’s story will be building towards something much bigger that will push him to his limit. We havent been shown him killing King Aerys in Bran’s flashbacks for no reason. I think his story is going to come full circle, maybe in Episode 10?

GOT608_113015_HS__DSC23031-1024x682
Valonqar confirmed?

A couple of quick asides here:

  • Bronn and Pod are the best. I would pay money to see a spin-off involving them. #Justsaying.
  • The goodship JaimeXBrienne is back afloat, sorry Tormund it was good whilst it lasted

And on to where another Lannister is paying for his debts, we have Tyrion in Meereen. His plans to make a deal with the Masters has backfired and they are now sieging the city with boats and fire catapults. Fortunately though, the great white hype Daenerys is back with a vengeance and certainly not happy to see what’s happened to her city. We don’t get any lines from her, but I imagine it’s not going to go well for Tyrion. He doesn’t have the relationship with Dany that Jorah had either, so whilst it could be exile for him, it could also be a lot worse. We’ll have to wait to find out.

gotreal

I make joke

And now the scene that pissed on the bonfires of those fans who wanted to see Lady Stoneheart, The Hound meets the Brotherhood without Banners. Honestly, I thought this was a pretty cool scene. It was good to see Thoros and Beric again and even better, hearing the news that they’re heading North to fight in the war against the White Walkers. For a long time now I’ve been wondering when we’d finally see Westeros begin to mobilise, and with reports of Season 7 and 8 being shorter than the 10 episode seasons we’ve had so far, it needs to happen pretty quickly. So great news that we’re getting some traction towards the show’s endgame, and there could be a Sansa/Arya/Hound reunion which would be brilliant. Unfortunately no Stoneheart, but honestly she’s not that great a character to me. I’d much rather spend time with Thoros and Dondarrion and I really don’t care if that makes me the unpopular kid :p

Oh and for the record, I still think we’re going to get Clegane Bowl. I just think it won’t be this season. Random thought though, can The Mountain be controlled by the Whitewalkers because he’s dead???

And now for the showdown we’ve been waiting all season for and the end of Arya’s time in Braavos. There was shouting at my screen when Lady Crane died (she reminded me so much of Catelyn) and then for pretty much the whole chase sequence. Watching it a second time for writing this review, it’s still ridiculously tense and well-paced. I did see a reference to the Waif being pretty much like the T1000 in Terminator 2 online and now I can’t unsee that.

98hKJNM

Look out Arya!!!

This sequence has got a lot of hate because Arya was able to run so well with stomach stab wounds, but I think that drinking Milk of the Poppy probably meant she didn’t feel any pain until her wounds reopened again or maybe she has picked up some magic from the House of Black and White?

YsbKHg1

Deus Ex Magicka

I also definitely think she was leading the Waif to her hiding place. The candle was on for a reason, the look she has before she extinguishes it shows Arya in complete control. Again, I would’ve loved to see the fight so much, but I realise that the Waif had more experience than Arya, was uninjured and so had the upper hand. By fighting her in the dark, Arya had the advantage after being blinded. It couldn’t have gone another way I don’t think.

My cabbages!!

MY CABBAGES!!!!

So it is fitting then that Arya pays the Many-Faced God with a life that had been promised, the Waif’s. Even up to the final reveal of the face (and how cool was it that it was crudely done?) I thought Arya might have lost the fight, but as Jaqen says, she has finally graduated from Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters the House of Black and White and in a moment that really did give me goosebumps, Arya declares that she isn’t No One. She’s not Arry, Weasel, Cat of the Canals or Mercy. She’s been running from all of the horrible things that happened to her and now she’s ready to face them as Arya Stark of Winterfell. It’s been a long time coming Arya.

Hopefully we’ll see you back with Sansa, Jon and Rickon (or maybe not Rickon) toute suite for the war against the White Walkers. They could do with a nightvision-possessing murder wizard on their side. Also DAT JON REUNION THO.

So whilst the hype levels have dropped dramatically, the lesson we as fans need to take away from all of this is to remember it’s Game of Thrones and we need to curb some of our enthusiasm. Ramsey Bolton said it best: ‘if you think this is going to end well, then you haven’t been paying attention’.

Preview for episode 9, Game of Thrones: The Battle of the Bastards

A few final thoughts:

  • I’m getting some serious Riders of Rohan vibes from that promo
  • Will Littlefinger be saving the day?
  • Is Davos going to kill Melissandre?
  • What will happen to Tyrion?
  • WHAT ABOUT MY CABBAGES?
  • And if you’re feeling too depressed about this episode, then watching this should help

Sony E3 2016

Sony are known for filling their E3 conferences with an onslaught of news and announcements on its hardware and upcoming games. 2016 continued that trend, managing to pack in a ridiculous amount of content into their hour long show. Originally airing at 2am GMT, I’m sure not many of you were able to stay up and watch, so check out our roundup of all the important bits below.

God of War

Sony’s show opened with an impressive full-scale orchestra and choir, building up to preview gameplay from the Playstation 4’s iteration of God of War. Beardy Nordic Kratos elicits loud cheers from the audience as he goes hunting with his son in an unknown snowy location that feels very Witcher 3 or Skyrim-like. Gone are Kratos’ blades and weapons, he now wields an axe which is better suited to the Nordic/Viking setting. The action also takes place from an over the shoulder view rather than the overhead views of the previous games, which I found to be a bit jarring at first, but got used to it after a couple of minutes.

The preview showed the violence that the God of War games are known for as Kratos takes on a horned monster, however the most interesting part for me was the focus on the relationship between Kratos and his son. In many ways I felt reminded of the Naughty Dog games: The Last of Us and the Uncharted series, which are known for their strong storytelling. It seems then that relationships could be something that this God of War game may be focusing on too. This would add a new dimension to the series which has until now, solely been driven by Kratos’ revenge.

Days Gone

Next up a cinematic trailer from a game created by Bend Studio. Massively reminiscent of The Last of Us, it showcases a post-apocalyptic world set in the American wilderness with a biker hero as it’s protagonist. I absolutely love a good dystopian game, so I’ll definitely be looking out for this, although there’s no release date as yet.

https://youtu.be/qkpE8neKrJU

The Last Guardian

A game that has been in development since 2007 and was first announced in 2009, The Last Guardian from Team Ico has finally got a release date: 25th October 2016 and I literally can’t believe it. Ico and Shadow of the Colossus are two of my favourite games of all time, so this is a pretty big deal for me. Instead of getting too hyped though, I’m just going to try and forget it’s coming out at all, so when it does I’ll be pleasantly surprised and if it’s pushed back again I won’t be crushingly disappointed 🙁 .

Horizon: Zero Dawn

Robot dinosaurs and prehistoric sci-fi action? That’s something I didn’t know I wanted until I saw the gameplay trailer for Horizon: Zero Dawn from Guerilla. It’s set in a beautiful open world too, with some seriously impressive world and creature designs. It’s slated for release early next year coming to the US first in February and the UK in March 2017.

Detroit: Become Human

Neo-noir, sci-fi and thriller are the three-word password to my bank account. No, not really (yes really). Quantic Dream seem to know this and keep releasing games that I have to buy no matter what. Detroit: Become Human seems as though it will be exploring similar themes to the movie Blade Runner via Heavy Rain-style gameplay. All I have to say about this is SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY! The cinematic trailer introduces us to an android called Connor who has to deal with a hostage situation involving another android who is protesting being a slave to humans. Just like Heavy Rain there are a number of different outcomes depending on what you decide, but powered by the PS4’s engine, this game looks closer and closer to a ‘choose your own adventure’ interactive film than any of their previous outings.

Resident Evil 7

Ohhh boy! (disclaimer: I can’t play scary games because I’m a big wuss). What I thought was a demonstration of Sony’s Playstation Virtual Reality, actually was a tease for Resi VII which will be playable on PS4 and PSVR. I can’t really comment on much else as I was watching through my fingers, but the release date is 24th January 2017 so hopefully someone from the Geek Pride team who is more suited to reviewing horror games, will be able to give a better review than I can.

Playstation VR

Coming out 13th October 2016 in America! 50 VR compatible games scheduled for release by the end of 2016! $399! Very US-centric, but hopefully we’ll be getting a firm release date and price for the UK soon. All good news though so far. Then we get the demos and honestly, Sony really seem to be mopping the floor with their competition this year: Star Wars: Battlefront VR, Farpoint, Batman Arkham VR, Final Fantasy XV VR, ALL THE VR!!!

Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare

I’m a bit burned out on the Call of Duty and Battlefield franchises, but honestly I love the look of this entry in the CoD series. Setting it in space adds a whole new dimension of gravity related gameplay involving grappling hooks. There’s the usual CoD first person shooter gameplay of course, but I think this iteration should breathe some new life into a franchise that has been wearing thin for a number of years now.

Oh yeah there’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare remastered coming out too.

Crash Bandicoot

And speaking of remastering stuff. Crash Bandicoot 1, 2 and Warped are getting the PS4 treatment (because money) and Crash will also be part of the next Skylanders game (I didn’t think Skylanders was still a thing – is it still a thing?).

Lego Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Lego games are my kryptonite. I have far too many of them and they’re all pretty much exactly the same, but I can’t seem to stop buying them. The Lego version of The Force Awakens looks absolutely brilliant too, full of the Lego humour and creative takes on the scenes from the films they emulate too. Oh release date in 2 weeks too, I’m sure I will be adding it to my collection.

Death Stranding

Hideo Kojima. Dead crabs everywhere. Norman Reedus crying. Invisible tar baby. Dead fish. Dead whales. No idea what’s going on. There are people floating in the sky. The audience are too confused to clap properly. I am too confused to write something decent about what I just saw. Check out the trailer and see what you think.

Spider-man

A Sony-exclusive Spiderman game from Insomniac. I’m not sure what else to say other than it looks like a pretty cool Spider-man game.

Days Gone (again)

Didn’t I write about this earlier? *scrolls up* Oh yeah. Okay they didn’t show us any gameplay really, so now we get a live demo. As I watch this, I think more and more they have stealthed a Last of Us 2 and my suspicions are confirmed when we get zombies. They’re not like the clickers of The Last of Us though, they look a bit more like the regular zombies we get on TV shows like The Walking Dead or like the zombie hoards in World War Z to be exact. The gameplay looks frantic and extremely tense. A brilliant way to end Sony’s press conference in my opinion.

So that’s all folks. A seriously impressive press conference from Sony with a ton of exclusives. That was a lot to take in over one hour and I know I’ll be going back and watching the game trailers a few times to examine them in a bit more detail. What impressed you guys the most? Let us know in the comments or via the usual social media methods.

Spotlight On: Bardic Broadcasts – A Cracking YouTuber

0

If you venture into the vast Forests of YouTube, you would be quite forgiven for thinking that the trees themselves were made of unboxing videos, so ubiquitous have they become in recent years. But, if you look a little closer, you may find, under all the noise and surprise eggs, a bearded man fumbling at a cardboard package and grumbling under his breath about Games Workshop. Congratulations, brave adventurer! You have discovered Bardic Broadcasts.

In his own words, The Bard was trained in ancient times in the art of unboxing by the secret grandmasters. In time, he says, he forgot more than he ever knew about this secret craft but, luckily for use, he still likes to keep his hand in with unboxing, reviews, and demonstrating the rare and feared technique of the reboxing! Covering video games, RPGs, boardgames and figures, The Bard provides his videos with a gruff humour, enviable facial hair, and infectious enthusiasm even when the item requires a good old-fashioned slagging off.

Combining a love of the absurd with a critical eye for detail and a mild love-hate obsession with Games Workshop, Bardic Broadcasts is a must-watch for any geek worth his salt, especially the ode to 80’s RPG classic, HeroQuest!

Check out a few of his videos below, then get thee hence to his YouTube channel and break out a tankard of mead for a cracking old time. Oh, and don’t forget your brodesode.
