Nerd Block Classic: July 2016 Box

In addition to Geek Fuel, one of the subscription boxes I’m trying out is Nerd Block. I had heard good things about it from several friends, so it was worth a shot. The cool thing about Nerd Block is there are several themes you can choose from-Horror, Sci-Fi, Arcade, Kids, etc.-and you can swap between them as often as you like at no additional charge. While several of the themes sounded tempting, variety is the spice of life, so I went with Nerd Block Classic, which offers a variety of items from all different sorts of properties. Let’s take a look, shall we?

Oh, God Save the Queen, we are not off to a good start.

20160723_000010

It’s a plushy of Jared Leto’s version of the Joker from Suicide Squad. I want nothing to with this movie, and Leto is a douche anyway. Hello, eBay! What’s next?

Sonofa…

20160723_000131

Yes, it’s a Margot Robbie Harley Quinn POP! keychain by Funko. Much like Mr. Leto above, I hate Margot Robbie, and watching her portray Harley in the trailers for Suicide Squad makes me cringe (fact: I saw about 2000 Harleys modeled after Robbie at Denver Comic-Con this year, and all of them looked better than she does). I would unload this one on eBay as well, but my wife wants to keep it. Not because she wants to see the movie or likes the actress; because it’s a Funko POP! figure and we’re kind of obsessed with those. Okay, if mum wants to keep it, mum keeps it.

Surely, it’s got to get better in this box, right? Let’s see what’s next. 20160723_000043

Ah…NOW we’re getting somewhere! Much like Funko POP! figures, we are addicted to Titan vinyl figures. Alien is a good franchise, and these are some nice looking collectibles. They’ll look good next to the Alien vs. Predator, Dragon Age: Origins and Doctor Who ones we already have.

20160723_000223

Most of these box subscriptions have buttons or pins. I’m fine with that, because we collect these as well. And who doesn’t love classic Transformers? These look good on lanyards at conventions.

20160723_000256 20160723_000308

We’ve got coupons! Coupons are generally good, especially if they’re for something you’re interested in. The first one from Shirt Punch makes perfect sense because they and Nerd Block are owned by the same company. The Mrs. and I both have massive t-shirt addictions (our closet is full of them, many of which came from boxes like this), so Shirt Punch coupons are dangerous. The second from HelloFresh, however, seems a bit strange for nerd/geek-based subscription service. Still, I’m not going to complain. I love to cook (and am pretty good at it, if I say so myself), so we’ll get some good use out of it.

20160723_000433

Here is the second Ghostbusters shirt of the month, and…man, do I love this. My wife took the Slimer shirt from the Geek Fuel box, so I will happily take this one. I wish less of these shirts came in black, as I like a lot of colour, but it’s a minor complaint. I will get plenty of wear out of this one.

Up next is a blind bag item. This is a backpack hanger from Attack on Titan, one of my favourite anime shows.

20160723_000807

Blind bag items can be hit-or-miss, but I usually get good stuff. Let’s take a look:

20160723_000908

Military Police insignia! Not bad at all!

A couple more items to go. Let’s see what’s next. 20160723_000106

Hmm…this is an odd choice. I don’t know that I’ll ever use any of these (do people even send postcards anymore?), but the folks at Awkward Family Photos have taken some of their “best of the worst” and put them together in a nice package. Not a great item, but it’s goofy fun, so I can’t complain too much.

Alright, we’re down to the last item, and…Oh, my. I’m afraid I just blue myself.

20160722_235951

A magnet set for Tobias Fünke, one of the best characters from one of the best sitcoms of all time, Arrested Development. It features Blue Man Tobias, Gay Pirate Tobias, Never-Nude Tobias and Leather Daddy Tobias, as well as a chunk of words from his most famous quotes and various stupidly great things from the show like a chocolate-dipped banana. This is easily the greatest magnet set I have ever owned.

*********

Wow. Nerd Block Classic right out of the gate is a great subscription. I really appreciate the wide variety of items instead of a specific theme or franchise. You get a nice mix of collectibles as a result. Yeah, I could really do without the Suicide Squad merchandise, but I know it’s a hot thing right now, so the franchise was unavoidable when you’re subscribing to three different monthly boxes. Overall, very pleasing, and I like the options Nerd Block offers with their boxes. I don’t know if I’ll try any of the themed ones or not, but if I do, I’ll review them here as well.

Geek Fuel: July 2016 Box

After being a subscriber to Loot Crate for nearly 2 years (and watching their quality diminish recently), my wife and I decided to try out another couple crate subscription services. We wanted to keep getting stuff every month like with Loot Crate and set up 1-month subscriptions with a couple to see what was out there. The first this month comes from Geek Fuel, a newer service based here in Denver that has grown pretty big over a short time. A mystery Doctor Who item was what led us to give it a go, as we are both big Whovians. So, was it worth it? Does Geek Fuel put out a quality package? Let’s find out.

The notable franchise included this month were the aforementioned Doctor Who, Alien and Ghostbusters. It wasn’t specificied which version of Ghostbusters merchandise we would be getting, so I was a little hesitant there. In fact, let’s just go ahead and start with that item.

Well, the box is certainly cool:

20160722_225028

Alright, time to see what’s inside:

20160722_225136

Pretty decent fan-designed Slimer shirt. A little on the cartoony side compared to some of the designs I’ve seen, but still nice. My wife claimed this one pretty quickly, which is fine. I got what I think a better shirt in this month’s Nerd Block (more on that in another article).

Up next is Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2.

20160722_224957

This is a wall cling, so it’s reusable. Unfortunately, my walls aren’t really good for stuff like this, and I’m not much of a fan of the franchise, either. I don’t know what I’ll do with this at the moment.

Anyone out there familiar with Badland? I’m sure not.

20160722_225257

This is a car air freshener with the added bonus of a download code for the full game on Steam. I know nothing about this game and had never even heard of it until now. A free game is still nice, but it doesn’t sound like my cup of tea from the description on the back. Plus, I have no car. Strike 2.

Looks like we’ve got a deck of cards up next…

20160722_225414

…and it’s Alien-themed. I like Alien and I like playing cards, so we’ve got a good item here. The artwork on the cards is really cool as well. The fronts and backs feature new art from the franchise and have a nice finish.

20160722_225612
Example of one of the card faces: The King of Spades.
20160722_225528
Back.

Now, if you’re familiar at all with these subscription boxes, you’ll know most of them come with some sort of exclusive button every month. Turns out Geek Fuel is no different. Fortunately, we collect buttons in this household.

20160722_225325

Boo from Super Mario Bros. crossed with Ghostbusters? I can dig it.

Finally, we have Doctor Who. Geek Fuel seems to do a lot of DW items from what I’ve seen (which is fine), so we were very curious to see what timey-wimey goody we got this month.

20160722_225231

How about that. A shower curtain. This might not be the coolest thing out there for some of you, but I’m very pleased. By sheer coincidence, the Mrs. and I were talking about buying one of these the night before. Welp, Geek Fuel took care of that! I think this is really cool and will look nice in the bathroom once we get it up.

***********

Overall, this first foray into Geek Fuel is pretty good. Only two items out of the boxes were “meh” for me, and they weren’t even that bad, so I have little to complain about. It wasn’t perfect, but the good stuff in here is worthwhile, so I think I’ll stick around with them at least another month or so and see how it goes.

Star Trek Beyond (2016) – Parting is such sweet sorrow

0

In loving memory of Leonard Nimoy

For Anton

USS ENterprise - Star Trek Beyond

Yes, I sat and watched the credits of Star Trek Beyond so that I could see the dedications. Yes I may have shed a little tear or two. Yes I thoroughly enjoyed the film overall, and no, it wasn’t The Fast and The Furious starring James T Kirk.

I actually thought that Pegg and Yung tried very hard to be true to both of the film’s origins with the first 2 films, while also reflecting on a few of the better parts of the older films and TV series. Let’s be honest, by now we have hopefully come to terms with the fact that the Kelvin Timeline isn’t necessarily the Trek we geeks want. It is, however, the Trek Film(s) we’re getting, and they’re doing pretty well for Paramount. Therefore, let’s just be happy that we’re getting both big screen Trek, small screen Trek, fan Trek (Resists the urge to be political) and literary Trek all at once, not to mention online Trek and now new RPG Trek. It could be a LOT worse, let’s be honest here.

The big thing I did have an issue with, which has been mentioned by others, was the lighting. There’s a fair chunk of the film which makes you think you should have NVGs on, not 3D specs (Yes I caught a 3D showing). I still enjoyed it, let’s be clear about this, but with all the money they spent, you’d think they could afford to turn the lights up a little!

Star Trek Beyond

Star Trek Beyond finds the crew a little over halfway through the 5 year mission, and in our new, enlightened and not so shiny Federation, the fact that these hundreds of crew have been locked up in a tin can together in unexplored space has definitely had some effects – Some positive, some negative. It’s good that they acknowledge this, and that they acknowledge the need for the Enterprise to stop for Rest and Replenishment – No awesome technology that never breaks here! With the crew (and the officers) starting to fray a little, but mostly seeming happy that they haven’t run into Khan again, the fact that their mostly dull (but not always) mission of exploration is livened up by a sudden need for direct action and the chance to charge to the rescue makes it obvious why they can’t say no – Jim Kirk didn’t join for the love of Starfleet – He joined to prove to everyone he could achieve everything his dad should have, and we all know how he went out.

Chekov and Spock - Star Trek Beyond

There’s some definite Deus Ex Machina in this plot, but it’s Hollywood – What did you expect? The primary cast all did well with their characters, though Karl Urban stands out head and shoulders – Pegg enjoys himself, Anton Yelchin reminds us why he was such a valuable part of the three films, and will be sorely missed in spite of his wubble-yous (“Did you know that Whisky was ACTUALLY invented by little old lady in Russia?”). Pine seems slightly less strained than before, as does Quinto, who seems to be at peace with the long shadow of Leonard Nimoy after his passing. Zoe Saldana kicks ass. Of the guest stars, Idris Elba chews the scenery well, but is wasted behind so much makeup. Sometimes less is more, guys! The effects are… impressive in a lot of places. They definitely go big…. The 3D compositing is also well done, nothing too over the top, but definitely helps to make the experience more immersive.

Can I just ask – If you’re going to kill a red shirt, at least be less subtle about telegraphing it, people? We understand it’s part of what we expect now, but a little subtlety may have novelty value!

There are some nice nods to the original timeline and their shared past. The farewell to Ambassador Spock is handled well, overall, and one of the keepsakes he leaves for Commander Spock brought a little tear to my eye.

Incidentally, Star Trek Beyond, as we know from the trailers, also makes a very good point – The Star Fleet Universe doesn’t take the military value of massed swarms of fighters very seriously. They apparently forgot a few of life’s more pointed military lessons – Expect some upgrades in next year’s line of ships from Utopia Planetia I would hope, especially since there are some fairly deliberate nods to earlier parts of the common Trek timeline.

Star Trek Beyond - Surrounded

Overall, I really enjoyed Star Trek Beyond, and the things people hated most about the trailers, well – They work well in the context of the film in my opinion, and are a little bit of fun, if sometimes brash – But the film acknowledges and even mocks that about them. “Is this CLASSICAL music” Bones exclaims, as Sabotage booms out of the cinema sound system.

Star Trek Beyond is definitely worth a watch, and I’ll be interested to see where they take the 4th film in a couple of years time, though it will be lessened by the loss of Yelchin. I am glad they have decided not to recast, though.

SDCC 2016: Teaser Trailer for Marvel’s Luke Cage

0

First up from SDCC is a bullet riddled teaser for Marvel’s Luke Cage coming to Netflix this fall season. Luke Cage stars Mike Colter as the title character who first made his first appearance in Jessica Jones as a ‘love’ interest and supporting character. This time one of Marvels’ toughest characters is the centre of attention having moved away from Hell’s Kitchen, Cage is taking on the criminal element of Harlem. In this clip Luke effortlessly takes down a bunch of henchmen before coming face to face with Cornell “Cottonmouth” Stokes played by Mahershala Ali.

With the promise of Misty Knight (Simone Missick) and Night Nurse played by Rosario Dawson, already introduced to us in both Daredevil and Jessica Jones, it looks like it’s going to be another hit for the Marvel/Netflix alliance. Luke Cage will be available on Netflix from the 30th September 2016.

Magic: the Gathering – It’s Innistrad, Jim, but not as we know it

Magic: the Gathering, flagship title in the world of collective card games, stalwart veteran of the tabletop gaming culture and now in its 23rd year and boasting well over 20 million players worldwide. Magic is definitely the defining archetypal geeky card game.

Currently, it’s a very exciting time to be a Magic player, as the lore (yes there’s a story, you philistine!) has brought us back to the plane of Innistrad, a grim, gritty, low fantasy setting full of Angels and Vampires and Werewolves (oh my!). Today, we are exactly one week away from the official release of the latest set of MtG cards, Eldritch Moon. Now, this is the second set in the Shadows over Innistrad block, which follows on directly from the Battle for Zendikar block both sequentially and with the story.

To recap, we first were introduced to Innistrad back in 2011. Following the events of BfZ, Nahiri (a Planeswalker, a big powerful magic user who can jump between dimensions) got super angry at Sorin (another Planeswalker, and super tough lord of the vampires) because he wasn’t around to help stop the Eldrazi titans (big, stompy, slithery Lovecraftian style monsters) from wresking her home plane of Zendikar. This led to her travelling to Innistrad, Sorin’s home plane, and basically throwing a massive tantrum…

There she is, being all pouty, shouty and mad
There she is, being all pouty, shouty and mad

In her rage, and through various other means (including secret evil cults, proper Cthulhu style), Nahiri manages to summon Emrakul, the biggest, meanest, slitheriest of the Eldrazi titans, to Innistrad.

Emrakul

Now, the whole idea behind the Eldrazi is that they absorb and corrupt the mana of the plane they’re in, warping the realities around them. This has had quite the dramatic effect on the land, with the angelic “Flights” becoming corrupted and horrible, now forming the singular Flight of Nightmares. Townsfolk and beasts alike have also become corrupted and, well, tentacley.

It’s now up to Sorin and the assembled members of the Gatewatch (the hero Planeswalkers from Zendikar) and Liliana, necromantic Planeswalker of low morals and lower necklines, to stop the squiggly mass of nasty that is Emrakul, along with the help of Tamiyo, another Planeswalker from the plane of Kamigawa (Feudal Japan, with magic and monsters, super cool!).

So what does this mean for Magic as a game?

Well, it is going through a transitional period at the moment. The current major format of Magic (known as Standard) has seen a change in its rotation of what cards can and can’t be used, and this new block of BfZ and SoI are the first of the new two set blocks.

As well as this, Eldritch Moon has brought a couple of new mechanics into the game. The first of these I want to talk about is Meld:

Meld 1Meld 2

You’ll notice that that these two cards feature the new Meld mechanic.

They also both have the Transform icon in the top left corner of the card, indicating that these cards are double sided, the Transform mechanic being first brought into the game with the first Innistrad set.

Both of these cards operate individually, but once the requirement has been met to Meld the two of the together, both cards are flipped and both cards have half of the Meld card on their reverse.

This then leaves the player with a single oversized creature card, stronger than its original components and ready to chew some faces. These particular two cards form this beauty:

Imagine that on a postcard.
Imagine that on a postcard.

Strong, can attack straight away because of its Haste rule, and makes more creatures whenever it attacks. Meld seems to be a very interesting mechanic, with some very powerful creatures that it gives a player access to, but whether it’s simply a gimmick of the set or if it will actually see some competitive play remains to be seen.

The second new mechanic in this set is called Emerge. Emerge is designed to represent the corruption of the Eldrazi completely overtaking a creature and bursting forth from them into something new and horrible, like a Xenomorph, or the morning after a potent curry.

Emerge

Those of you familiar with Magic will notice that these cards have two mana costs. The first in the top right corner and the second in their effect text. You can either play these creatures normally or you can have them Emerge by sacrificing another creature to count towards the mana cost of the Emerge beastie. These creatures then also have effects that trigger when they enter the battlefield or otherwise do equally nasty things. This example in Distended Mindbender is particularly horrible because it makes an opponent get rid of cards from their hand, potentially ruining their strategies.

This weekend sees people across the world playing in Prerelease events for Eldritch Moon with the set becoming officially released and tournament legal worldwide next weekend on the 22nd of July.

I personally can’t wait to sink my teeth further into the juicy plot of the Innistrad plane.

Until next time, I’ve been and shall remain Craiggy.

Who ya Gonna Call? Good Question.

Clu6ZsUXIAY2CO2

I’ve spent the last 24 hours staring at my laptop screen with a blank document staring back at me. It wasn’t writers block, anxiety, or even not knowing what to write –  no, instead it was a case of being unsure of how to start, where to go, how to conclude, and in an honest and lucid way.

This film should have been a no brainier: an easy fun piece to write, but due to the running melee that preceded it’s release, (with fans of the old school films being very vocal about its cast and even their gender ), it made me doubt my view and how I felt about it. Was it really my opinion or was I being swayed by others?

It is therefore with great reticence that I now provide what I feel is my honest view on this film and one based on my own fandom and love for the franchise.

You can set the pyres aflame after.

Before the remake, various scripts and ideas for a third movie in the Ghostbusters franchise had been long planned, including one in which Bill Murray’s character was transformed into a ghost and another in which the Ghostbusters went to hell.

Unfortunately, Bill Murray’s reticence to commit to the project and the death of Harold Ramis resulted in the controversial decision to reboot the franchise instead; which was duly announced in 2014 with Paul Feig as the director.

1434589124_paul-feig-slime-zoom

Feig stated that he was partly inspired by the TV series The Walking Dead, mentioning that his goal was to “Tell a story that you haven’t seen before. Or tell a story you’ve seen before, but in a way you haven’t seen.” Contradiction, it seems, is something Feig was not adverse to embracing.

Tweeting a picture of his main cast: Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones in January 2015, the fans went ballistic! Unfortunately for Feig this was not in a good way and the trailer set a record for the most disliked preview of a film on its premiere release date.

ghostbusters-2016

The plot line was simple and something we’ve heard before but I’ll get to that in a minute.

Why was this though? The story was a simple one and something we are all familiar with; Erin Gilbert (Kristen Wiig) and Abby Yates (Melissa McCarthy) are a pair of unheralded authors who write a book theorising that ghosts are real. A few years later, Gilbert lands a prestigious teaching position at Columbia University only for her book to resurface and when an encounter with a class 4 free roaming vapor goes viral (YouTube plug), she is laughed out of academia.

It’s when ghosts invade Manhattan that Gilbert reunites with Yates, teaming up with a nuclear engineer, Jillian Holtzmann (Kate McKinnon), a subway worker, Patty Tolan (Leslie Jones) and don’t forget trusty receptionist Kevin (Chris Hemsworth), to save the world from a mysterious, shifty and downright creepy character called Rowan (Neil Casey).

So far, so good right?

Well on paper maybe, but I feel I need to tackle the concerns for this film and Mr. Feig’s “vision” of the Ghostbusters franchise.

So, where to begin?

ghostbusters-pics-chris-hemsworth-pic

To say this is an original idea or unique story is questionable. The same introduction with a new lick of paint as the 1984 Ghostbusters, scientists who aren’t taken seriously and fired from their university jobs and the favourable giant apparition walking the streets of Manhattan. These are but a few of the easily recognisable scenes, the others? Well only to the more experienced paranormal exterminator can they be identified.

After collaborating with a good buddy of mine, fellow Ghostbuster and the best source of RGB knowledge (The Real Ghostbusters) going, Farudeboy Khan and I came to the same conclusion about the 2016 reboot. Paul Feig has used several if not more of the RGB plot lines to convince us he’s written, produced and directed an original film.

Now I know that’s one hell of a statement to use but I have the pudding to back it up!

CULVER CITY, CA - MARCH 02, 2016: A general view of at the Columbia Pictures' GHOSTBUSTERS Fan Event on the Sony Pictures Studios.

SPOILER ALERT!

The overall plot of the film has come direct from the RGB episode ‘The Halloween door’ while their first bust at the Beast Mayhem concert is taken from the episode ‘Banshee bake a cherry pie’.

These are the main scenes I wanted to list, there are many more that are used which include “The flipside, Mrs. Rodgers Neighbourhood” and the Pilot.

Now, onto a topic which in my mind, no doubt, will get me strung up like Viggo the Carpathian and we all know what happened to him! The “male” hate in this film is horrendous and the blatant jabs are sneakily hidden by what passes for humour. And not even dry humour, but Nickelodeon, Scary Movie, fart joke humour that feels unnatural and in some scenes forced.

Erin and Abby play the buddy cop role really well, in fact it’s the only good trait Paul Feig has when making a “group” movie. Holtzmann is so OTT when it comes to the mad scientist role that it becomes tiresome and uncomfortable to watch (eg. the DeBarge scene), Patty on the other hand is actually a fresh role. She oozed the charm of Richard Pryor and the sass of Whoopi Goldberg, leading me to really enjoy her character.

cjqxicnucaapwbn

The F/X on the Proton Streams is a great homage to the original and it was amazing to see again. The ghosts, spooks and spectres on the other hand were in your face and too animated – even, Slimer’s appearance fell flat.

ghostbusters-2016-trailer-slimer

Ecto 1 was a sight for sore eyes, I thought the trade from an ambulance to a hearse was a nice touch. The proton packs were an adjustment for myself as the original design was flawless but hey! It worked.

I want to stress, I’m pro Ghostbusters! Meaning I believe anyone can be a Ghostbuster! Male, Female, Dog, Cat –  even Slimer became a Ghostbuster at one point. Yes they’re women, yes they’re scientists, we’ve been introduced to female scientists before (Bernadette and Amy in TBBT, Madame Curie etc.) and I’m happy they’re Ghostbusters.

girl-power-ghostbusters

What I’m against is using something that is beloved by legions of fans and using it for your own purposes. You can call me out for not seeing it’s a deliberate mirroring of women being portrayed badly in most films but guess what, this is Ghostbusters. The reboot no longer seemed like a Ghostbusters movie but a huge ‘girl power‘ piece where women rule and men suck!

If you think I’m exaggerating? They turned Thor into a dumber than dumb blonde eye candy character and shot the main protagonist Rowan in the dick with proton streams. In the dick!

A great actor like Andy Garcia is left to play a self-obsessed mayor of New York while the blessed Bill Murray now plays a paranormal debunker who gets tossed out of a window by a ghost and killed. Sigourney Weaver has a cringe worthy line in which she says “Warning lights are for men!” And I’m left asking myself, was that line really necessary?

The saving qualities: these came in the form of Annie Potts and Dan Akroyd!

To see Annie in her trademark ‘Janine’ glasses and to hear her beautiful Brooklyn accent answering a phone saying “Whattaya want?” was like music to my ears and brought on nostalgic good feelings.

Ghostbusters 2016 Movie Trailer Stills 002 Library Ghost

Onto the line that for me was worth sticking around and watching the entire film, Dan Akroyd’s own line. He plays a cab driver who is stopped by Erin trying to get back to GB headquarters in Chinatown, while the apocalypse seems to be running rampant through the streets of New York. When asked, Dan Akroyd’s beautiful response is “I ain’t picking up weirdos, I ain’t going to Chinatown and I ain’t afraid of no ghost!” Brilliant!

The end credit scene (yes there is one) is fun and a familiar name is said, I won’t spoil it.

As a reboot Ghostbusters falls flat for me. It was always going to have big ectoplasmic shoes to fill but the worse kind of director helmed the director’s chair. My thoughts are that if more time and originality went into the script instead of Paul Feig’s wardrobe and haircut, we might have had a half decent film. Instead we had a man who couldn’t take criticism from loyal fans who vented their displeasure in a film not because it had female ghostbusters; but because it was a franchise that didn’t need to be rebooted.

So in conclusion, the question is “Who ya gonna call?” My answer? Sorry, all lines are busy now please try again later.

Features that Pokémon Go Needs

0

Just in case you’ve been living under a rock that only had dial-up for the last week or so, Pokémon Go has been released by Niantic Labs. A much-anticipated AR game, one wanders their native city with the game running in order to find wild Pokémon, hatch eggs, collect items, and fight to take over the Gyms scattered throughout the city for their ‘team’. It is part of Nintendo’s ongoing effort to make their handheld audience go out into the world and is more popular right now than Twitter.

Pokemon GO

However, we are still essentially playing a beta of the game. Seeing the version in the menu ought to be proof enough of that (for non-software geeks, anything less than 1.0.0 is classed as being in development). So there are more features to come, with Johto’s Pokémon due to be added some time in winter.

Here, then, are some more features that Pokémon Go needs to be successful.

Battling Outside of Gyms

pokemon-go-620x339

Although the famous tagline for the Pokémon series is ‘Gotta Catch ‘Em All’, there is an implicit addendum to this: ‘And Make Them Fight For Your Amusement.’ Pokémon battles are as iconic as the Pokéball flying through the air to concuss a wild creature, and yet the only form of fighting currently available is by taking on a Gym’s stored Pokémon.

The main problem with the Gym system at the moment – aside from the potential for there being none nearby – is that lower level and newer players have little to no chance of enjoying battles. I am level 7 with a highest CP (Combat Power) Pokémon of 240+. Every Gym around me has Pokémon whose CP is 400+ at least, making it very difficult to win, i.e. the part most people enjoy about Pokémon battles.

Though there’s rumours of PvP coming in during future updates, I would suggest random NPCs who challenge users with level-appropriate Pokémon would be a good step to get people battling. Hell, why not introduce Team Rocket like that? They are the perennial baddies of the Pokémon universe and would be a good common enemy for the three rival player teams.

Something To Do At Home

Most every feature of Pokémon Go is predicated on you going outside. I understand that as a core design principle. However, it means that a game that Niantic Labs should want us all to dive into often will be left unopened whilst we’re sitting at home, watching Netflix, and rubbing our sore muscles. And an unopened app is neither fun nor a money-spinner.

That’s leaving aside how disabled players are unable to enjoy it. Hell, children’s hospitals have been asking people to drop Lure modules there so the sick kids can play in their wards. Whilst heartwarming, it’s also indicative of a lacking in game design.

Some mechanic where you can play with/train your Pokémon whilst at home would go a long way to resolving this.

Pokémon Locators

pokemon-go

Oh God, please, please, give us some item that points out what direction a particular Pokémon can be found in. I have walked around for miles, trying to find a Gastly, for the number of pawprints never to drop. Given that Pokémon will despawn within 5-10 minutes, faffing around trying to track them down is not fun in its current implementation.

What’s worse is that, during the beta, Pokémon distances were given in metres, so it was much more fun and easy to track them down in the beta!

An item that points out what direction a particular Pokémon is in – even if it’s just compass points – is vital to allow people to track down their favourites and enjoy their walking more.

Update! Apparently, you can find out what direction a Pokémon is in by clicking them on the nearby tab and then pressing the compass. The map will then point you in the right direction to go to. GAME. CHANGED!

Item Finder

This one is a no-brainer. The handheld Pokémon games already have secret items that can be found through the Item Finder, which beeps depending on how close you are to a hidden object. Put this in and we’ll have more to do as we’re walking between Pokéstops, hoping for something other than ANOTHER FUCKING WEEDLE!

Make Starter Pokémon More Useful

For those who don’t know, the way the game currently operates means that your starter Pokémon will be about as strong as a newborn, and you would have to catch dozens more of them in order to level it up to something appropriate. However, all of those you catch out and about will be much stronger than your starting Pokémon, to the point where it’s better to trade in your starter for the candy needed to level up a real Pokémon.

Starters should be given some sort of primacy amongst caught Pokémon, an ability to level up along with their trainer so that they are always relevant. That’s basically how Pikachu has worked for more than a decade of Pokémon anime, and so I should have the same for my god damn Charmander. He’s adorable. He’s the best. But he’s useless to me and will be melted down into candy the moment I find something stronger than him.

Jazz Rendition of the Pokemon Theme is a Dinner Party Must

0

For the adults who were kids in the 90s, the Pokemon theme tune is a cherished childhood memory. Naturally as a geek and a parent I used to sing the theme sing to my babies – as you would a nursery rhyme – only my performance was more dramatic and featured a lot of air grabs.

Alas, we are grown-ups now and as such we should probably try to be a little more mature…at least some of the time, but it doesn’t mean we have to give up the Pokemon theme song. Scott Bradlee from Postmodern Jukebox presents this jazz rendition of our beloved song. Featuring the vocals of Sara Niemietz and packed with a whole lotta soul it works beautifully. Though it was released back in 2015, with all the super hype surrounding Pokemon Go and the way it is bringing people together, I felt it important to make sure you knew of this cover’s existence. Seriously, you need to pop this one on at your next fancy dinner party.

HorrorCon 2016

Last weekend was HorrorCon, one of the largest horror conventions in the UK.  Held in the former steel mill Magna, the industrial decor more than suited the convention.  Admittedly, this was despite the red lighting, which at times made it feel more like set from a porn set.

Headlining the event was Doug Bradley (Hellraiser’s Pinhead), during a rare trip to the UK.  Doug remained smiling throughout the weekend, despite an incredible number of people waiting to meet him.  Alongside Doug was Kane Hodder (Jason Voorhees in Friday the 13th) and Emily Booth, amongst others.

Emily Booth was particularly engaging, as she elaborated on the missing scenes from the cult sci-fi/horror film Event Horizon, as well as recalling how Sean Pertwee (and some of the other actors) tried to see what was happening during the filming of those scenes.

The convention was spread out across three halls at Magna.  Whilst this prevented crowding, it also meant that parts of the convention were missed until much later due to poor signposting.  Panels and Q&A sessions were hidden behind a curtain and the entertainment room was similarly unmarked.

Queues happen at all conventions, and HorrorCon was no different.  This was compounded by the lack of information as to where events were taking place.  A convention map displayed on the walls would have easily resolved this.

The first room was a mix of reception area and traders, as well as makeup artists and snake charmers.  It was at this latter stand, that some of the braver attendees could hold tarantulas and a 14ft python, who was apparently quite friendly.

Another room was dedicated to interactive entertainment, such as the zombie shooting range, which offered people the chance to practise with crossbows, throwing axes and throwing knives, or even fully automatic (replica) weaponry.

The main room was packed with dozens of traders, with one side of the hall dedicated for the guest stars.  Dotted amongst the traders were authors and artists like Nick Percival and Alex Davis.  It was great to see some of the stallholders getting into the spirit of HorrorCon, such as identical twin authors C. L. Raven, who were obviously enjoying themselves.

Lurking amongst all this Mr Punch’s Cabinet of Curiosities, a freak show without the freaks.  Created by a group of magicians, the show was apparently so shocking it required a government health warning.

Later in the afternoon, a zombie grind core band entertained a small crowd, mostly because there was little indication of where they were going to play.  Other than the sound of the band reverberating into the first room, there were no announcements.

Many attendees took the opportunity to cosplay as some of their favourite horror characters, from Pennywise to a werewolf.  Unfortunately, there were some who took the cosplay too far, and insisted on sneaking up on people and screaming in their ears.  This quickly became annoying, not just for their unfortunate victims, but for everyone else in the room.

However, this brings me to one of my biggest issues of the event.  Despite parents being urged to exercise caution, HorrorCon was billed as a family-friendly event.

Although all the attendees, traders and guests were always friendly, HorrorCon was not a place for young children due to nature of the event and some of the imagery.  No matter how much Pennywise may smile and wave, it is still scary.

AMC’s Preacher demonstrates there’s trouble in Annville

PREACHER-OTN-100-promos-101-AMC-COM-ZH1678903.01_01-1280x720

Stuck in development hell for years Preacher is the kind of thing that I could never see actually making onto the screen big or small, it was just too batshit crazy and too unapologetically gleefully offensive. When news emerged that Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg were working on bringing Preacher to the small screen I honestly thought it would just die before actually becoming a reality just like the various other attempts.

Somewhat surprisingly though Preacher made it to the screen via AMC, only it’s been rather underwhelming so far.

Preacher is past the halfway point in its first season and it’s safe to say there’s some problems in Annvile. This show doesn’t seem to really know what story it’s telling, and it’s also doing it very slowly. For what I assume are budgetary reasons, the whole first season is set in Annville, the backwater Texan town where Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper) is the resident preacher. Which shouldn’t neccessarily be a bad thing if there’s good writing and interesting characters populating Annville, only there isn’t and there aren’t and that’s two of the shows major problems.

The first episode introduced hard drinking Irish vampire Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun) and Jesse’s feisty ,intelligent and fiercely independent ex Tulip (Ruth Negga) in impressively chaotic style but gave Dominic Cooper’s Jesse little to do besides mope around and deal with his parishioners. Jesse is stuck listening to the mindnumbing minutiae of their lives, and do a little verbal jousting with the local Sheriff Hugo Root (W. Earl Brown).  By the first episode’s end the most interesting characters by far were Cassidy and Tulip and this is something which carried through for most of the following episodes.

Six episodes in and Jesse is still the least interesting character of the core trio, which is problematic since he’s the main character who I find myself not really caring about at all, I’m far more interested in Cassidy and Tulip.

There’s nothing wrong with telling a story slowly, plot isn’t that interesting without character development, the problem here is there’s not much in the way of character development either. Annville is not an interesting place and the characters besides Cassidy, Tulip and Jesse really aren’t that interesting either. Sub-plots involving Jesse’s church helper Emily (Lucy Griffith), the mayor of Annville (Ricky Mabe), unhinged local business magnate Odin Quincannon (Jackie Earle Haley) and Donnie (Derek Wilson) one of Quincannon’s muscle seem a bit like ponderous filler, something in the way of the story rather than part of it. The only characters outside the core trio who are interesting are Eugene (Ian Colleti) the sheriff’s ostracised mutilated son and The Cowboy (Graham McTavish) who appears in prologues set in the Old West.

Speaking of The Cowboy this must be the most bewildering display of the shows haphazard approach to writing for anyone who isn’t familiar with the comic, as they will have absolutely no idea why the show is featuring prologues set in the Old West that have zero connection to the on-going story. You could easily think you’re watching a different show entirely. Conversely though people who are familiar with that story will likely find these are amongst the best scenes the show has to offer because they know where they are (theoretically) leading up to.

Watching Preacher it’s hard to grasp what story it’s trying to tell. The comic can be summed up with “Smalltown preacher gets bizarre new power and goes on roadtrip with his friends to find God” but the show isn’t that story. As for the elephant in the room, not telling the exact same story isn’t necessarily bad if it’s a story that’s well done. There’s a lot stuff going on here, stuff that seems to try and establish why Jesse doesn’t want to leave Annville despite apparently having good reasons to and Tulip’s attempts to convince him and it’s all stuff that makes the show seem like it’s stuck in second gear. None of it seems convincing on a character level. Another problem is Tulip is being poorly served by writers who have no idea what to do with the character after such a good introduction, featuring in a love triangle which makes no real sense from a character perspective and being reduced to a “stay away from my boyfriend” subplot that equally makes little sense, both these developments undermine her introduction as being intelligent, capable and fiercely independent.

Cassidy and later Jesse’s altercations with Fiore (Tom Brooke) and Dublanc (Antol Yusef), two mysterious figures charged with getting back what Jesse is now host to, are glimpses into the story at the heart of Preacher but the show seems to have developed a predictable habit of having one or two interestingly unhinged blackly comical scenes per episode whilst the rest is just ponderous unengaging exploration of smalltown life and anything resembling actually hitting the gas quickly gets choked out.

Preacher isn’t an awful show but it’s not great either, it’s “okay” and in an age where there are numerous shows all competing for a chunk of time any show’s creators should be aiming for better than “okay”.
