SDCC 2016: The CW Superhero Roundup

the-flash-arrow-legends-supegirl-800x420

The CW channel has been busy, renewing its star superhero shows and collecting new ones under it’s wing; The Arrow  enters it’s fifth season, continuing the adventures of Oliver Queen and his quest to clean up Star  City. The Flash enters uncharted yet familiar territory to DC fans, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow sets it’s sights on the entire timestream and we have a new, but familiar face coming to The CW in the form of Supergirl, whose second season will switch stations to become part The CW superfamily.

Unfortunately, this seems to be the closest to a Supergirl Season 2 trailer we will be getting right now, but considering the character is a little bit familiar with the big-names of the CW-verse thanks to a dimension hopping Barry Allen, I wouldn’t be surprised if we got to see a little more crossing of dimensions as the series progresses.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LxG7JR4-nCM

First up, we have Season 5 of Arrow. The trailer begins with a brief summation of the finale of Season 4, which saw Oliver kill Damien Darke to fulfil his promise to the deceased Laurel Lance. The team disbanded in the finale, and Oliver begins his run as Mayor of Star City. Whilst you can imagine that this will interfere with his vigilante schedule, it look like Oliver will be continuing his crusade…both by reaching out to his old friends, and by educating new vigilantes inspired by the Arrow – the new Black Canary, Wild Dog and…Curtis Holt? It looks like Mr Holt will be taking the steps to becoming the CWverse’s Mr. Terrific.

Additionally, whilst it is hinted towards the end of trailer that the antagonist for season 5 will be an archer, it has been confirmed that the new villain will be Prometheus. Long-time fans of the Emerald Archer in the comics will know the character well, as he is responsible for disarming Arsenal – quite literally – and for provoking Oliver into executing him. Does this mean we will see return of Roy Harper? Or does this mean something terrible for one of Oliver’s new apprentices? It has been established that this will not be the same Prometheus, but this still does not bode well for the vigilantes of Star City.

We also get some insight into the flashback arc, which shows Oliver leaving the Island and heading to Russia. Which means only one thing: Bratva. The show established back in Season 1 that Oliver had become captain in the Russian mob during his five year disappearance…and it looks like we will finally see how.

Back in the Season 2 finale of The Flash, Barry Allen did the unthinkable – heading back in time to prevent the murder of his own mother, creating an unthinkable paradox as the reason for him becoming The Flash disappeared from existence. Readers of the comics will be familiar with the move, as it sparked the event ‘Flashpoint’, which is what caused the reboot of the entire DC Universe (or was partially, if you’ve read DC Rebirth #1). The act of selfishness caused a ripple in time which drastically changed many characters origins and attitudes, including a missing Superman, an older Batman, a war between the Atlantians and the Amazons, and no Flash.

Everything Barry Allen knew is gone…and yet he has all he ever wanted.

The trailer gives us a glimpse at Barry’s perfect life – his mother is alive, his father was never jailed, and they all live together in happiness. But things are different – no one in the West family has the deep connection to Barry that they previously had, Cisco is now the head of Ramon Industries who is indifferent to his previous colleagues, and Thawne is Barry Allen’s prisoner who seems to have some idea of what has happened to the timestream.

Throughout the trailer, we get glimpses of future events. Another unnamed speedster, garbed in black, who appears twice – once by himself, and again when he is confronted by…Wally West, who finally showing some speed and a new costume. Additionally, we get a glimpses of Doctor Alchemy, who appears to be another prominent villain for the upcoming season.

The trailer also features collections of clips from the previous seasons, as if to emphasise the events which have been seemingly been wiped out by the actions of Barry Allen. However, as Thawne taunts Barry from inside a cell, it appears this villainous speedster may know that there’s more to this universe than meets the eye. A lot is left unanswered by this trailer, like the identity of the new speedster, the fate of the Rogues and how Barry will presumably get his speed now that the original event which created The Flash no longer exists.

Finally, we have the Season 2 of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, which picks up right where the series left off with the team being confronted by Rex Tyler, also known as Hourman and prominent member of the “Justice Society of America”. It has been revealed that the members of this incarnation of the team will be Hourman (Patrick J. Adams), Vixen (played by Maisie Richardson-Sellers, who will be a 1940s iteration of the superhero), Citizen Steel (Nick Zano), Obsidian, Stargirl, and Dr. Mid-Nite, with the three latter characters still being cast.

The trailer itself reveals not a lot of new information as it is still in production, so it essentially sums up the events of the first season and the aftermath of the actions – the Time Masters are gone, and now history is unguarded against time criminals and those who would seek to manipulate events. Such as, New York being blown up…in World War 2. Which prompts the team to investigate, causing a confrontation with Arrow season 3 villain Damien Darke.

Despite not being mentioned in the trailer, the antagonists have been announced for the upcoming season. A collection of villains to match the powers of these Legends and Justice Society – The Legion of Doom. This Legion will be comprised of familiar faces from across the CWverse, including Eobard Thawne, Damien Darke, Malcolm Merlyn…and Leonard Snart, freshly plucked from the timestream before he joined (and died for) the Legends.

With all shows coming to Netflix, with a deal to air the up-to-date seasons once the finales have aired, Geek Pride cannot wait to see what lies in store for their favourite supershows. Which one are you most interested in watching?

SDCC 2016: Captain Marvel Announced!

0

At this weekend’s massive Marvel Universe Panel at SDCC, as well as showing the new trailer for Dr Strange, introducing the cast from Guardians of the Galaxy Part 2 and Black Panther, along with many other things, Marvel President Kevin Feige announced the actress playing Captain Marvel: Brie Larson!!

Captain Marvel

Calling together all of the actors present to discuss their films during the panel, Feige pointed out that the lineup (and pictures) wouldn’t be complete without the newest star, and called Captain Marvel onto the stage, introducing Brie for the very first time in her new role. The announcement, alongside their casting of actors such as Michael Keaton, Cate Blanchett, Kurt Russell and Jeff Goldblum, further highlights just how things have changed for comic book movies – No longer B-movies, but properties that the stars want to be part of, and their agents don’t warn them away from!

Brie Larson is Captain Marvel!!

Captain Marvel is down for a 2019 release, so it will be a little while until we see footage of Larson as Carol Danvers, but it’s still a little exciting that the other Captain in Marvel’s cinematic universe has a face, now. I for one cannot wait to see more!

SDCC 2016: ‘Kong: Skull Island’ Trailer released

The producers released an SDCC trailer for Kong: Skull Island, starring Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson, Brie Larson, John Goodman, and John C. Reilly at their panel yesterday, the 23rd July.

With a dash of added ‘Apocalypse Now’, set during the 70s, hence the Vietnam War vibe, the adventure takes place on an uncharted Pacific island, and the titular ape is definitely huge. There’s some slightly more modern air to ground action with Kong playing ‘Swat the Huey’, and I’m guessing we’ll get a chance to revisit the smell of Napalm in the morning while they show Godzilla who’s in charge….. Apparently it’s the next instalment in a franchise that started with Godzilla, and it’s the story of how Kong became Kong, so it’s another origin story before we get a monster mash.

Kong: Skull Island

Filmed in Hawaii starting October 2015, Kong: Skull Island is scheduled to be released in the United States on March 10, 2017, a small slip from the original announcement in 2014 that it would be released on  November 4, 2016.

Kong: Skull Island

Ears to the ground, if we play our cards right we may get Mothra by 2020!

SDCC 2016: Star Trek Discovery – Coming in January 2017

CBS have revealed the identity and approximate time of their new Star Trek TV series, Star Trek Discovery, debuting in January 2017 on CBS’ Pay Per View service in the US, and Netflix across the rest of the world. During the Star Trek 50th Anniversary panel at San Diego Comic Con, Bryan Fuller revealed the first test footage of NCC-1031 – USS Discovery.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c-QiKmBiAmQ

The design may seem familiar to Star Trek fans. that’s because it’s pretty obviously  based on one of the legendary Ralph McQuarrie’s unused concept art/designs for the Enterprise NCC-1701A in Star Trek Phase 2/ the Motion Picture. Fuller said it was, but “to a point that we can’t legally comment on it until [our legal team] figures out some things.” It shares some of the classic Star Trek Federation starship characteristics, but the secondary hull is a lot wider and more geometric. We can only wait to find out how they explain it. The nacelles themselves have 3 bussard collectors each, possibly implying that it’s a design that uses previous components in a new way. As an NCC registry it’s not experimental, so it will be interesting to find out what role and mission it will have in the new series.

Ralph McQuarrie's Enterprise - Star Trek Discovery

When asked why the ship was called the USS Discovery, Fuller said “There are so many reasons why we settled on Discovery,” Fuller explained. “But the chief one amongst them was that I couldn’t think of a more Star Trek-themed name for a ship than Discovery.”

USS Discovery - Star Trek Discovery

The registration NCC-1031 implies that the ship predates the Enterprise 1701, but is later than the Enterprise series, and the NX-1. There are sure to be more details between now and then of the ship, it’s crew, and the situation. We’ll bring you more news as it’s released about Star Trek Discovery.

NCC-1031 - Star Trek Discovery

There are sure to be lots of theories and opinions about this – For sure it’s the first new Star Trek on TV since May 2005. Let’s hope that it’s done well, and will satisfy the hunger for new Star Trek in the classic timeline, rather than the movies with the ‘Kelvin Timeline’. Fuller also confirmed the series will apparently “Not be episodic”, but will tell stories like a novel. This implies that they are learning from Marvel and Netflix.

SDCC 2016: Justice League Trailer hits with a K.O!

San Diego Comic Con 2016 has already given us some great footage with amazing teasers and trailers.

It seems though a Golden Goose keeps laying these fantastic golden eggs for us, this one? I must admit, had me somewhat concerned after Zack Snyder’s recent ‘Batman vs Superman‘. After seeing the Justice League Trailer, l’m at a lost for words, you have peaked my interest and you have my attention.

I have feels in all the right places and now I’m excited to see where this goes. I’m not going to say more, as I believe the trailer speaks volumes, so much so, that no journalist or write up could do it…justice. Some things are best left for your own viewing eyes.

So, without further ado!

I can’t I just can’t I think I need to go curl up in the fetal position for a while because that was brilliant!

SDCC 2016: Wonder Woman Trailer is Here and it is Glorious

0

Finally the Wonder Woman trailer has been released and I stand in awe. Tears are flowing and I’m filled with a range of different emotions. Joy because this geeks dream is coming true but, also, relief, such relief. It is fair to say I have been waiting a very long time for this moment and with such anticipation comes the risk that it will not meet expectation or worse, be a complete flop. Well, if this trailer is anything to go by, Wonder Woman is going to be one hell of a ride. To see Diana (Gal Gadot) in all her fighting glory, so far, is living up to and beyond my expectations. Those lasso moves though, and the costume, oh dear lord it’s perfect.

Of course we meet Steve Trevor (Chris Pine),  Hippolyta (Connie Nielson) & the Amazons and Etta Candy (Lucy Davis) is bringing the a little comic relief, but let’s be honest, they are not who we want to see. Yes, I am probably extremely biased and to over run with emotions to critique it on any serious level, but I don’t care,it’s glorious.

So without further ado, please feast your eyes one the one and only Princess Diana of Themiscyra, Wonder Woman.

Yesterday Wonder Woman herself Gal Gadot shared this piece of beauty with the world. To say I drooled when I first laid eyes on a thing of such beauty, is not an exaggeration at all. It is simply stunning and striking and just wow. A silhouette of a warrior not to be underestimated. With the tag line  ‘Power, Grace, Wisdom, Wonder’ It is everything I could want it to be.

Wonder Woman and Blue Beetle Battle It Out in Injustice 2’s SDCC Trailer

0

“Did I mention I’m an Amazon?”

Hot off its E3 announcement trailer, WB Games released a new trailer for Injustice 2, featuring Wonder Woman and Blue Beetle.

Sequel to the hit that was Injustice: Gods Among Us, Warner Bros has once again teamed up with NetherRealm Studios for another DC fighting game a la Mortal Kombat. The game looks to continue the storyline from the previous game, with Batman and Superman once again going head to head along with the rest of the DC superhero roster, all the while a new threat beckons to tear apart the DC universe as we know it.

NetherRealm’s creative director Ed Boon teased that the Injustice 2 panel would reveal new playable characters, and it looks like Wonder Woman and Blue Beetle will be joining DC heavy-weights Aquaman, Atrocitus, Batman and Supergirl. As can be seen below, the trailer also is the perfect demonstration of what the improved gameplay will be like when it’s released next year. In addition to the new trailer, panelist and writer Tom Taylor mentioned that he would be writing a comic-book prequel to the new game.

It’s likely that in the next few months that NetherRealm will continue to unveil yet more of Injustice 2‘s roster, but for now, let’s bask in the entertaining battle between our favourite Amazonian and Teen Titan.

Injustice 2 will be released on Xbox One and Playstation 4 sometime in 2017.

SDCC 2016: Teaser Trailer for American Gods

0

So I’m still pretty much devastated about the cancellation of Hannibal last year, but the new American Gods trailer is doing a lot to make me feel better about it. An adaptation of the Neil Gaiman critically acclaimed novel created by Bryan Fuller who was showrunner for Hannibal, he’s now tasked with bringing the world of American Gods to life. And from viewing the trailer shown at SDCC by the Starz panel, it looks as though he’s done that perfectly.

The trailer is just a glimpse, but we begin to get an idea of the conflict between the deities of traditional religions (Egyptian, Norse, Native American, African) vs those that the populace now worship in modern day society (Technology, Media, Drugs, Money). Our protagonist is Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle) and it’s his journey we follow as we delve into the world of the old Gods and the new, guided by Mr Wednesday (Ian McShane). And from what we can see in the trailer, the rest of the casting looks pretty much spot on too. Watch the trailer if you don’t believe me, and then watch it again because it looks absolutely bloody gorgeous.

It still hurts that there’ll be no more Hannibal, but I really, really can’t wait to see this. No premiere date, but American Gods will be showing on Starz in 2017.

SDCC 2016: Game of Thrones Blooper Reel for Season 6

0

Game of Thrones is obviously one of the best things on TV ever, right? Sadly the season can only be so long which leaves us wanting all the way until Summer 2017. But, with the end of a season comes the blooper reel and I love a good blooper reel. This focuses on Tyrion and bless, he’s having a little trouble with his words, as is Daenerys but she does have to speak Dothraki so it’s to be expected. With a little bit of Jon Snow and the Hound having trouble with his wood, let’s enjoy our favourite characters getting it wrong.

Loot Crate: July 2016 “Futuristic” Box

I have been a subscriber to Loot Crate for close to two years now. The crates started out good and, for the most part, stayed consistently good for quite a while. A dud here and there, but overall a worthwhile purchase. However, the company lately has been pumping out, in my opinion, at least, dud after dud after dud. I don’t think I’ve gotten a good one in at least six months, and the one for June was enough for me to cancel my subscription. However, I had one more under my subscription left, which came this month. Were we able to part ways on a high note?

For those that don’t know, Loot Crate does a different theme for each month. This month was “Futuristic” and contained items from the Mega Man, Rick and Morty, Star Trek: The Next Generation and Futurama franchises, as well as Valiant Comics. Since the last one is the only real franchise I was interested in, let’s start there.

20160723_002111

Dammit, that’s beautiful. Then again, it’s Quantum Mechanix (QMx), so what do you expect? They make some of the best licensed collectibles out there (and are also responsible for the Loot Crate Firefly boxes, which I will also be reviewing here; those boxes are amazing, BTW), and this is no exception. I am torn whether I want to open it or not, but either way, that Planet Express ship is going to look next to my other collectibles.

Up next, we have a Megan Man blind-box figure from kidrobot.

20160722_214018

20160723_002506

Not bad. I’m not a big fan of the franchise, but it’s a decent figurine. I’ll hang onto it.

We have two items from Star Trek this month, one from the original franchise and one from The Next Generation. Let’s start with original, which is Loot Crate’s monthly pin.

20160723_002130

I’m not a Trekkie, but who doesn’t love Spock? That’s a good-looking pin. The one thing I will say for Loot Crate is their pins have definitely gotten better. They used to just do a button with a drawing of the theme on it; now they do a nice custom-looking piece like this every month. The AVP and 20-Sided Dice ones I’ve gotten in the last few months were especially stylish.

I had no idea what this was until I opened the package. I have a rule that I never thumb through the monthly magazine, which talks about the contents of the box, until after I’ve looked at all the items first.

20160722_213910

20160723_002207

Turns out it’s a sticker version of a plaque located on the USS Enterprise. My wife was always a fan of TNG, so this one is definitely for her. It looks pretty nice. It’s very reflective, so unfortunately you can see my hand and my phone. The picture doesn’t really do it justice, but I assure you it looks cool.

20160723_002256

One of the better parts of Loot Crate is exclusive variants of comic books. Even if it’s not a comic you’re interested in, they’re all but guaranteed to be worth at least US $10.00 right out of the box, which does help you feel like you’re getting your money’s worth. I’m not familiar with this particular series, but it looks interesting, and I like some of the other stuff in the Valiant library, so I’m hopeful.

Finally, we get the monthly tee shirt. And…oy.

20160723_002321

I’ll probably alienate some readers here (even though I’ve only got 3 or 4 as is), but I hate Rick and Morty. HATE IT. I’ve watched it multiple times and legitimately gave it a fair chance, and I just don’t get its appeal whatsoever. Aside from a David Cross cameo in an episode, I have never once laughed at that show. Sorry, but this one’s headed to eBay.

*******

Well, it wasn’t a great way to end my run with Loot Crate, but it definitely could have been worse (I could have ended on June’s box, for example). Perhaps one day, I’ll go back, although a box like this isn’t enough to entice me. That, and they just raised their prices in order to supposedly improve the quality of the boxes. I’ll believe it when I see it. Either way, we had a fun run, but but I won’t be going back any time soon. Admirable last effort, though.
