Firefly Cargo Crate 006: YoSaffBridge

For the first time since Loot Crate and QMx started doing these, this month’s Firefly Cargo Crate is actually themed after a supporting character from the show instead of one of the main cast. And, they’ve got a crowd favourite, that being YoSaffBridge (a mash-up of her three aliases, Yolanda, Saffron and Bridgette), most commonly known as Saffron, played by the painfully gorgeous Christina Hendricks. Saffron was definitely one of my favourite recurring characters, so I’m excited to see what we’re getting this time around.

First up, a lapel pin.

I love the pins QMx puts out for these boxes, and this is a nice one. It features the quote, “‘Night, sweetie” and a lipstick kiss, from Saffron’s first appearance on Firefly in the episode “Our Mrs. Reynolds”, where Mal accidentally winds up marrying Saffron, only to later find out she’s a fellow smuggler, trying to steal Serenity itself for her own crew.

Up next, we have the monthly t-shirt.

This features something a blueprint design (on a black shirt) of the famed Lassiter Laser Pistol, a favourite weapon among the Browncoats. This one appeared in probably my favourite episode, “Trash”, where Saffron and Mal attempt to steal the weapon from another of Saffron’s husbands who doesn’t know her true identity. I think it would have been better served on a blue shirt, but you take what you can get. It’s a nice design, and it will definitely get plenty of wear from Yours Truly.

Item number 3 is the monthly sticker.

This one represents the planet Bellerophon, named after the arrogant hero in Greek mythology. Fitting, given that, in the show, the planet is home to some of the wealthiest folk in the entire ‘Verse. Bellerophon was home to the aforementioned Lassiter and was the main setting for the “Trash” episode. I like the design, but what more can you say about a sticker? Like I said in a previous review, eventually I’ll probably frame all of these in a collage.

We get a second batch of flashcards this month for item number 4.

Similar to the last ones received, containing facts and stats about a selection of planets, including Bellerophon. Nothing special, but great for the Browncoats who want to know every last little bit of information on the ‘Verse.

Ah, the QBits blind-box figures are back! Let’s see who we get this month.

It’s everyone’s favourite tiny killing machine, none other than River Tam herself. This one will be added to my display with Jayne, Wash and Book (RIP, Ron). The possibilities were either River or Inara. Can’t really go wrong with either badass lady.

Now, this next item I found to be a bit disappointing, and I’ll explain why.

As you can see, it’s a Serenity keychain. It comes in a nice box, and once you take a look at it, it’s got great detail (and is surprisingly hefty in terms of weight). So why is it disappointing? For no other reason than not only do I already have one, but our household in fact has two. If you read my article on Denver CSTS (and let’s be honest, you probably didn’t), I got one in my ‘Verse ticket package, as did my wife. Don’t get me wrong, I love it (and no, I’m not selling one); I was just hoping for more items I didn’t already have. It’s a minor complaint, though, especially when it’s purely by chance that I already had it.

Finally, we get to my favourite item in these Crates, the Mini Masters Little Damn Heroes statues.

Outstanding likeness of our Mrs. Reynolds (yet another popular pet name among the Browncoats, for obvious reasons). I like that these statues are both cartoony and realistic at the same time. The detail is superb, with very careful attention paid to in regards to the colour, as always. This is going on the display with the rest of the Little Damn Heroes, Serenity and the gold-coloured plaque from last time.

******

Like always, great Crate. I have very little to complain about, and even those complaints are paltry. I would have liked the shirt to feature Saffron’s likeness (and come in a different colour), but at least it fit the theme and wasn’t just a random design.

Well, that’s all for this time. I’m not sure what the next theme will be, as I have not received the announcement email yet, but I’m sure it will be a good one. I’m going to guess Mal or possibly one of/both of the Tam siblings. Either way, should be good. See you in a couple of months!

Chris has also served as Angelina Jolie’s butler in the Tomb Raider Films.

In addition to sci-fi authors, there will also be comic writers and artists, with the inestimable Dez Skinn, Simon Bizley and Glenn Fabry being joined by Simon Davis, Clint Langley and Jeff Cummins.

Rounding off this tapestry of guests, will be a packed programme of panels, music and screenings, as well as the always fantastic Imaginarium and Masquerade ball.

John Hurt passes away, aged 77 (1940-2017)

0

It was announced last night that the British actor, John Hurt, has passed away, aged 77. He is survived by his 4th wife, of 12 years, Anwen Rees-Myers, and sons Alexander, 26 and Nick, 23.

The 3 Doctors

A twice Oscar-nominated actor, the actor had won a Golden Globe and 4 BAFTAs, as well as a Lifetine Achievement Award, and was known for a wide range of roles in over 100 films, starting in 1966 in A Man For All Seasons, but the most famous Genre roles you might be familiar with would be poor Kane in the original Alien, and his reprisal of the role in Spaceballs, Winston Smith in 1984, Chancellor Adam Sutler in V for Vendetta, Trevor Broom in Hellboy, Mr Ollivander in the Harry Potter films or the War Doctor in Doctor Who. More recently, he starred as the priest Father Richard McSorley, the Kennedy’s confidante, in Jackie (Released last week), starring his V for Vendetta costar Natalie Portman as Jackie O. The director, Pablo Larrain, said of him “John was invincible, Unflinching, Eternal”.

John Hurt in Hellboy

Hurt battled pancreatic cancer in 2015, and had received the all clear in October 2015. He was quoted in the Radio Times as saying “I can’t say I worry about mortality, but it’s impossible to get to my age and not have a little contemplation of it. We’re all just passing time, and occupy our chair very briefly”. Hurt received his knighthood in the July of the same year, saying “It does make one inordinately proud.”

More recently,e was forced to pull out of a production of The Entertainer alongside Kenneth Branagh in July 2016,due to ill health.

John Hurt and the QueenJohn Hurt and his 4th Wife, Anwen

Notorious for his partying lifestyle when younger, he associated with notorious hellraisers like Oliver Reed and Peter O’Toole, and boasted of drinking 7 bottles of wine a day (This later was reduced to 3). He was known to say that his remarkable career “isn’t bad for an old drunk”. As recently as 2008 he admitted to having given up the majority of the drinking – he grumbled in 2012 “Actors don’t drink so much now. There were 8 of us sitting around the other night, and only I was drinking wine”.

Known for dying ‘a thousand deaths’ (40 or more – Do try to keep up, Sean Bean) on stage and screen (big and small), he remarked “I think I’ve got the record. It got to a point where my children wouldn’t ask me if I died, but rather how do you die?”

There is even a video on his YouTube page entitled The Many Deaths of John Hurt:

John Vincent Hurt was born on January 22nd, 1940 in Chesterfield, Derbyshire. His father was a vicar, his mother.. he also had a brother, and a sister. He wanted to be an actor from the age of 9, but studied Art at his parent’s request, earning an Art Teacher’s diploma. Moving to London, he won a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, studying for 2 years. his first roles were bit parts in TV series, and his first London stage role was in Infanticide in the House of Fred Ginger.in 1962, and his first film role was in the Wild and the Willing in the same year. He became more widely known in the US starring as the duplicitous baron Richard Rich in A Man for All Seasons, which one the Oscar for Best Picture. He later performed with The Royal Shakespeare Company and The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, as well as in the West End – When asked about the difference between film and stage acting, Hurt explained “It’s rather like 2 different sports. You use two completely different sets of muscles”. He was also known for his voice over work, including The Black Cauldron, Watership Down and The Lord of the Rings in 1978.

John Hurt

Following his role as the War Doctor in the 2013-14 season of Doctor Who, Hurt was quoted:

“I’ve done a couple of conferences where you sit and sign autographs for people and then you have photographs taken with them and a lot of them are all dressed up in alien suits or Doctor Who whatevers. I was terrified of doing it because I thought they’d all be loonies, but they are absolutely, totally charming as anything. I’m not saying it’s the healthiest thing — I don’t know whether it is or isn’t — but they are very charming.”

He’ll be missed, and is another reminder for us Brits, as well as the rest of the world, the remarkable breadth of talent that we have been so lucky to benefit from over the last 50 years on stage and screen. He’ll still be with us though, with so many wide and varied film and TV roles. We at Geek Pride extend our sympathies to his wife, sons and friends.

Dust and Decay – Chapter 2 – By Sean P. Wallace

Want to know what’s happening? The first book Dust and Sand was serialised here at Geek Pride. A summary is available here. You can also buy the definitive edition of Dust and Sand at all good eBook stores.

The fist graced the tip of Dust’s hair. A nice try from his opponent. He countered by grabbing her arm and throwing her over his shoulder. Shadows Fade, anticipating this, mule-kicked her before she landed. A damn good blow. Winded, she skidded until she came to a stop.

Dust straightened. “You sure you haven’t had enough?”

Shadows Fade stepped beside him. “Do not stand.”

They fought in an undulating plain, flowing and liquid. Like a painting of a field. The sky and ground were grass green. They might’ve fought inside an apple for all it looked.

Penelope Chalmers struggled to her feet. Her face was badly busted up – Shadows Fade’s work ‘cos Dust couldn’t bring himself to hit her face no matter how much she told him to fight dirty – and her limbs shook. She spat blood, a tooth going with it, and shook her head. Then she gestured for them to come at her with a less toothy grin.

Dust matched her grin. She sure had fight. That cult had put her through hell, but she’d come back with a fistful of it to unleash on the world.

Shadows Fade sighed and ran forward. Dust followed. He went to Penelope’s right, Shadows Fade to her left. Penelope lashed out when Shadows Fade got close. Too slow. Too injured. The warrior hopped back and kicked Penelope in the crotch. Penelope doubled over and swore loudly. Her eyes watered.

Dust slammed his elbow into her neck. She ate dirt. Didn’t look like she’d get up any time soon.

“You did well.”

“Thanks,” Penelope spluttered, more blood staining the green floor.

“Ignore his praise. You should not have carried on fighting. Skill and bravery are important, but knowing when to fight is more valuable. Take stock. Admit your limitations. You were never going to survive that last onslaught. You should have avoided it.”

“That’s a mite harsh.”

The warrior turned her scowl on him. Dark skin, dark hair, dark eyes. “Dust, I disagree. You do not know enough about fighting like a normal warrior. Adopting your attitude may get Penelope killed.”

Dust wanted to talk back, but his tattoo warmed to tell him the warrior was probably right. The damned thing always burned when he was about to do something wrong. So, he shrugged instead. “Shall we end all of this?”

Shadows Fade nodded. “Very well.”

The world shivered and they returned to their tent. He woke first, always did. As he stood to stretch back into himself, Shadows Fade and then Penelope roused. The latter immediately checked her tooth was still there.

Their tent was smoky and dim. The fire had died long ago, there only to fuel the ritual. Piles of furs gave ’em places to sleep. A bearskin hung from the ceiling could drop between them for privacy. This’d been their home for weeks now, but they’d spent much of it wherever Shadows Fade sent them. That green world.

Her ritual was so damn curious. It seemed to create bodies for them in some other place. Somewhere else. Bodies which weren’t rightly physical but felt an awful lot like it. Illusions didn’t work on him, so they were sent somewhere outside of this world by Shadows Fade’s magic. He reckoned the ritual made bodies they dreamt themselves into. Fragile and fleeting things, but they acted how they should.

Shadows Fade had trained like this with her mentor, an old warrior who’d spent his life fighting the Triangle. No, not the Triangle, the Three. She was comfortable in that state, could bring more power to bear. And she was ‘only’ human.

A damn convincing argument as to why he oughtn’t question her advice to Penelope.

“Sorry about earlier,” he said. “I’ll hold my tongue better.”

Penelope still wasn’t aware of them. Which was fair. After that beating she was wrapped up in checking herself, telling herself that none of the wounds’d happened. It was a long process. Dust suspected that had something to do with her trial with That Which Sins.

The warrior nodded. “It is fine. The balance between us is where Penelope should aim. We must both ensure we place her there.”

As usual, she was damn right. With the Omnis Collar they’d stolen when they rescued Penelope, she got some of Dust’s imperviousness, but not all. No magic got past the artefact, in or out, so she couldn’t use tattoos to power her like Shadows Fade. And she’d go down under gunfire like anyone. Main thing was that she could shrug off most everything the Three could throw at her while wearing it.

“I got a few good punches in, didn’t I?” Penelope asked, present at last. “Gave somewhere near as good as I got?”

“You got a few punches in, true. Shadows Fade was right though: you risked too much to get ’em. Unless you’re getting a killing blow, don’t risk injury like that.”

Shadows Fade grunted. “But, if you see a killing blow, go for it with all you’re worth.”

Penelope stood. Not much taller than Shadows Fade, blond, hardened by torture. She’d gone from a scrawny thing pulled from a god’s clutches to something like a fighter in only weeks: her arms had definition and her eyes no longer had that starved look. Then she smiled and he could see who she’d been before all of this.

“Your conflicting messages aren’t helping, you know that?”

“Conflict is conflicting. We are trying to teach you good judgement.”

“I guess. That wasn’t a good session then?”

“I wouldn’t say that,” Dust said. “You learned a lot about recklessness.”

Penelope laughed. “I suppose I did. I suppose I did.”

They left their tent. Godly Claw waited patiently outside, lying on the dusty ground like a lazy dog. She yipped at seeing them and padded over to rub against her master. Shadows Fade looked delighted as all get out as she knelt to fuss over the blue Spirit Wolf.

Dust’d thought Spirit Animals were part of the warrior who summoned them, but it was more complex than that. A theme for everything with Shadows Fade’s people: he’d thought he’d understood them, having dealt with them before, but he’d barely scratched the surface. The Indians – no, the Nations – had rituals and cultures far beyond what he’d known. He felt stupid and guilty for each time he’d dismissed them.

He felt bigoted.

Where they’d stayed was proof enough of his foolishness. This ancient city, finer than any cathedral, carved hundreds of years ago. Back when it’d been a home and not a monument. They’d never’ve survived without this oasis of safety. This town of rock.

Mighty fine town it was too. Big as any settlement Dust’d ever seen, it had towers for protection, circular places of worship, markets, wide, sloping paths, and homes enough for a thousand. Kehuadinune, it was called. It was almost always in shadow, which helped it survive the harsh desert sun and had protected it over the centuries since it’d been… vacated.

Weird bit of history that. Not something Dust’d ever come across. The Teotek Elders say Kehuadinune dwindled because folks’d started longing to live as nomads. Much like so many’d come to America for a new life, he guessed. Emigration reduced trade, made the city less enticing to live in. A… spiritual or cultural shift then followed as whole groups decided town life wasn’t for them. The Teotek band one of the first to leave en masse. Soon after, it was a ghost town, and that’d been that. From a thriving centre of culture to a shrine in decades.

It hadn’t been forgotten. Nor had its protective sigils and spells, which even now masked it from the outside world. Strong enough even to hide Dust.

“Isn’t it grand?” Penelope asked.

“And how.”

“There are other places like this across America, you know. Scholars and academics I talked to at Party events were excited by them. Proof the Nations once had great, vibrant cities. Back before they regressed.”

Dust cast a glance back at Shadows Fade, glad the warrior had been too busy with Godly Claw to hear that. “They didn’t ‘regress,’” he replied in a low voice. “They just didn’t do what we did.”

Penelope examined the Teotek’s fur tents and then the city. “You sure?”

Dust tutted. “You’d best keep those opinions to yourself.”

“I’m surprised. I thought you’d be… of the same opinion.”

Dust laughed. Not nicely. “I was bad, but not that bad.”

The girl put her hand to her chest. Her eyes widened. His tattoo didn’t punish him for the comment, despite it being harsh, but the Nations were Resistance’s favoured people. Why else would they know so much about magic? The non-tainted kind, at least.

Shadows Fade and Godly Claw approached. Penelope dropped her hand, wise enough to not give away any clue about her conversation with Dust.

“When do you think we train again?” she said to change the subject. “Go another round? I can take it, I promise.”

The warrior considered this. “We are done for the day. The beating you took drained my (dream essence).” She used a word in her language, an offshoot of Caddo. Dust’d picked up little bits of it, mostly what he needed for day-to-day conversation, but no more: he didn’t have a talent for languages.

“Oh, that’s a shame.” Penelope jumped on the spot. “I’m full of energy.”

“Go for a run,” Dust suggested. “Keep your actual body ready.”

Penelope stopped bouncing. “Yeah, I’ll do that. Goodbye!”

With that, she jogged off. Some of the band’s children were playing nearby, pretending to be warriors or monsters. They broke from this playing to wave to her. Penelope waved back, determined and full of life.

“There is much to her,” Shadows Fade said, standing beside Dust. “If I had a year to train her, she wouldn’t need Omnis’ Collar.”

Dust wondered if she’d feel the same after hearing Penelope’s views. Just considering that earned him a burnt arm. He gritted his teeth to stop from wincing.

There punishments were a regular occurrence of late. Now he was free of the Solution, could do whatever he wanted, the tattoo was trying mould him. Shape him to what the god known as Resistance wanted. And Resistance didn’t want someone petty.

“It is obvious you do not think so,” Shadows Fade said, looking at his arm.

Dust didn’t answer.

Shadows Fade might’ve pushed him further if Thin Creek hadn’t approached. A wizened woman whose face was a little too small for her head, she wore a simple woven poncho and a long skirt. Like every other Teotek Elder, Thin Creek walked with the carefree air of someone others waited on. And she smiled a lot, content as all hell.

“Wanting Man, Shadows Fade, the Elders wish to see you.”

“And what is this about?” Shadows Fade asked, her tone a little biting.

Thin Creek merely smiled more broadly, turned, and gestured for them to follow.

With a shrug, Dust did as bid.

Medioevo Universalis – That big game you always wanted

0

It is no secret that I enjoy a good table top game and collect everything from Traditional War Games, to dungeon crawlers and even card games. The one thing that floats my proverbial boat, more than anything else in the board game world, is big, long and complex strategy games. Myself and my brother can literally spend 2 days playing games like Axis and Allies Global and still want to play more!

Some cower at the thought of such a challenge but not me, the bigger the better, and I’m always on the look out for games that might provide me with that game I feel my life deserves…. and I think I’ve found it.

Medioevo Universalis is a game that has been in development for a long time and places you down in the tumultuous Middle Ages, as one of the main powers of the day; think Medieval total War but boardgame version of… SOLD!

Players will lead one of the great medieval kingdoms of the thirteenth century by developing an intricate commercial network, advancing its technology, and weaving diplomatic relations with the other players. A number of possible adverse events can occur: natural disasters, and barbarians that will hinder military conquests or the creation of an empire.

With the ability to play with up to 9 players to say this sort of game is so far up my street, it is in my house, partaking of my biscuits, is an understatement and has me salivating at its potential.

With 15 days left it has smashed it original goal of 20,000 and is still going strong; meaning more stretched goals and more perdy things to add to the base game.

Medioevo Universalis can be found HERE and is due for release in December.

Final trailer for Logan unleashes X-23

0

Like many people out there on this spinning orb we call home I’ve had a distinctly problematic relationship with the X-Men films. A franchise that seemed to rapidly become about being a vehicle for showing people with powers have poorly realised fights, rather than being an exploration of interpersonal relationships, character dynamics and society.

The upcoming Logan is Hugh Jackman’s last outing as Wolverine, a character he has been portraying across several films since the first X-Men in 2000, and it looks like it might actually change things. Jackman has become synonymous with the surly Canadian with adamantium claws and has often been one of the highlights of the franchise despite its numerous frequent stumbles.

The new trailer for the upcoming film which centres on an older and weary Logan and features an ailing Charles Xavier aka Professor X (with Sir Patrick Stewart returning to the role) introduces more elements. The main one being more of Dafne Keen, displaying both her ferocity and general obliviousness to society’s rules as Laura aka X-23, a young girl who finds herself in a similar situation to Logan so many years ago. The new trailer also shows a meta touch with Laura reading X-Men comics and Logan commenting on how “in the real world people die”.

Could Logan be the X-Men related film that finally does things properly and balances character development, a good story and action?

Logan is in cinemas March 3.

Tales of Berseria – Character Profiles

Tales of Berseria, comes to the western world later this month – January 24th for America, 27th for Europe – and fans of the series are eagerly waiting to experience the sixteenth addition to the Tales of series. Those who cannot wait can whet their appetite on the demo which is available both on the PS4 and PC. The events of Berseria takes place in the same world as Tales of Zestiria, and will take place several years prior to the events of that game.

Berseria is set on the continent of Midgand, a Holy Midgand Empire, a powerful country that rules the countless islands of the immediate area.

There are three species that live here; the Humans (who make up a majority of the population), the Malakim (supernatural spirits with magical abilities), and Daemons (humans afflicted by a disease known as Daemonblight, which causes the infected to lose humanity and rationality). The world is also littered with an abundance of monsters who roam the lands. Inside the Holy Midgand Empire, there exists an political and religious faction known as the Abbey,  who employ Exorcists to purge the world of Daemons and bring peace to the world…no matter how far they must go.

Thanks to the kind folk at Bandai Namco, we have some information to give you a heads up on the characters you will encounter on this journey!

·         Velvet

The first female main protagonist of the series, she is a 19-year-old female who seeks to kill Artorius, the head of the Abbey and Exorcists, as three years prior to the game’s story he sacrificed Velvet’s younger brother in order to gain the power to defeat the Daemonblight and the Daemons it creates. Velvet tried to prevent the sacrifice, but her attempt to so saw her left arm become something akin to a Daemon, which allows her to absorb the powers of Daemons and other creatures. Her conversion to a Daemon meant she was thrown in prison, where she spent three years eating Daemons. When Velvet finally escapes her prison, she vows that she will use what or whoever to accomplish her goal or revenge. She fights with a blade mounted on her right-hand gauntlet, feet, and her demonic left arm which is usually wrapped in bandages.

·         Eiezn

A man who, despite his appearance, is actually about 1,000-years-old. Known as the “Reaper”, he is the skipper of Aifread’s pirates, who is on a search for his missing captain, Van Aifread, on the ship called the Van Eltia. He is also the brother of the character Edna from Tales of Zesteria. Eizen fights using his fists for close-quarters combat and can also use malak artes to strike from a distance that are centered on Wind and Earth. He also has a battle action – known as Break Soul in the game – called  Draconic Drive, causing him to sprout dark wings. The appearance and name foreshadow his eventual fate as a dragon, which you see in Tales of Zesteria.

·         Eleanor

A compassionate, caring woman, she lost people precious to her during the Scarlet Night event. She joins the Abbey as an Exorcist, keeping the world safe from daemons through extermination, but her kind nature clashes with the need to exterminate Daemons indiscriminately. After a certain event in the game, Eleanor joins Velvet and her team to ‘discover the truth behind this world’. She utilises a spear to attack enemies.

·         Laphicet

A 10-year-old boy of the Malak race who is strangely similar in appearance to Velvet’s deceased brother. He first appears as a Malak serving under an Exorcist, where he assists in stopping Velvet. Velvet turns the tables by capturing the Malak – she names him after her dead brother, and as the game progresses he moves from weapon to individual as he interacts with the team. He fights using paper sheets, utilising magic attacks from a distance.

·         Magilou

She is a mysterious woman who introduces herself as a “great sorceress” and the “Head of Menagerie”, but she is more known for “unlicensed witchcraft”. Magilou is an extroverted and chatty woman, utilising slow but wide-ranging attacks. She excels in malak artes where she focuses on Fire and Water elements to fire off powerful blasts.

·         Rokurou

A black-haired man wearing samurai garb who, he became a Daemon during the events of the Scarlet Night but managed to retain his humanity and sanity. Not much is known about this character, other than he follows Velvet to pay a debt to her, and comes from a family foreign to the region – the same family as the Exorcist Shigure. He fights with twin daggers and utilises his Daemonic abilities to deal relentless damage.

·         Shigure

Shigure is Rokurou’s older brother and the head of their family. He has a free-spirited attitude, unappreciated by the serious-minded Exorcists he works alongside to become the strongest. Unpeterbed by the judgements of his co-workers, he justifies his carefree behavior with his immense battle prowess. His sole joy is to fight tough opponents and seems to enjoy it when his opponent is stronger, never turning down a new challenge whenever it arises.

·         Seres

A Malak woman with power over fire, Seres is Artorius’s subordinate who began to question his motives after the Scarlet Night when she started to regain her mind. Three years later, she sneaks into the prison island Titania in order to free Velvet, and sets in motion the events of the game.

·         Artorius

Artorius – real name “Arthur” – is the head Exorcist at the Abbey and considered to be a savior by most of the populace, as he is responsible for exterminating a large number of Daemons with the help of numerous Malakim. After breaking free from her prison, Velvet sets herself on the path of vengeance as she believes that Artorius’s death is the only way she can avenge her dead brother, who died at the hands of Artorius that fateful day.

Tales of Berseria comes to America on January 24th, and to Europe on January 27th

Go Go Power Rangers! Trailer 2 Hits

So, it’s been 12 hours since the Trailer of Lionsgate/Saban’s 2017 Feature “Power Rangers” went live online and the Ranger fans, Ranger Community and Cosplayers have gone wild with excitement at finally seeing the big reveal of some of the most anticipated characters (and vehicles).

Released March 24th directed by Dean Israelite (Project Almanac, Acholilad) and starring Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott, RJ Cyler, Becky G, Ludi Lin, Bill Hader, Bryan Cranston as Zordon and Elizabeth Banks as Rita Repulsa. The third film based on the Mighty Morphin Heroes, it serves as a reboot and re-imagining of the Original series.

From the trailer, we already get some of the nostalgic 90s classic of the original; the theme tune, the putty patrol and the phrase “its Morphin Time!”

Visually dynamic and the action sequences look amazing, that double kick from Ludi lin’s Blue Ranger was sick and the assault Zords we all know and love rolling out to fight the big bad Goldar was what this Geek was hoping for and not over the top gigantic skyscrapers that were teased in a poster.

It was great to finally see Bryan Cranston as Zordon for the first time on screen and I was surprised (in a good way) to see and hear Bill Hader as Alpha 5, previously I had my concerns over the design of the plucky robotic assistant but after that snippet, I’m less worried now.

Elizabeth Banks as Rita! It should be a crime to look that amazing and beautiful and be playing an Evil Rogue Green Ranger, it’s just not fair.

The suits look more and more like actual power suits rather than the love child of Iron Man and The Guyver!

Now without further prattle from myself, here’s the trailer. Keep your geeky eyes peeled for my Review of the film.

Let the Power Protect you!

Nerd Block Classic: January 2017

As mentioned last month, the them for the first Nerd Block Classic for 2017 is “Stark Industries”, with items based on Tony Stark/Iron Man. Should hopefully be a good box with that kind of theme, so let’s take a look.

Item number one: a lapel pin.

Designed to (obviously) look like the Arc Reactor, this is one of the nicer pins/buttons I’ve gotten in all of these crates over the years. Plus, it’s metal instead of vinyl, which is always a bonus.

Up next is an interesting item, and one I’ve never owned before.

Apparently, these are just cubes of granite that keep your drinks cold, as an alternative to ice.

I haven’t had a chance to try them, as you have to freeze them for four hours before use, but they look really cool with the engravings. And, if they work, they’ve got a practical use, especially in my household (my wife and daughter are obsessed with using ice in their drinks).

Shirt time! And my very first Iron Man shirt, to boot.

Designed to look like a blueprint of the Iron Man prototype suit, and on blue instead of the usual black. It’s not the flashiest of shirts, but I like the design and it also fits well. And any colour other than black for these shirts is welcome.

A 3-D magnet is the next item in the box.

Nothing special, but we actually use refrigerator magnets pretty regularly in my household, and this one looks better than some of the others we have, so that’s good. Plus, practical items that I actually can (and will) use are never a bad thing.

And finally…hmm. What do we have here?

Normally, when there’s boxes within the box, there’s some kind of picture showing what’s inside. Instead, we have just a solid black box with a “Nerd Block Exclusive” sticker on it, nothing more. Interesting. Well, no time like the present, right? Let’s take a look at what’s inside.

Wow. These are actually really beautiful. If you can’t tell, it’s a pair of whiskey tumblers with the Stark Industries logo etched onto two sides. I’m not a consumer of alcoholic beverages, but whose to say I can’t drink juice or water from these beauties? These are definitely a nice addition to our ever-increasing collection of geeky/nerdy dishware and cutlery.

Overall, a pretty good box this month, and every single item fit into the theme, which doesn’t always happen. And every single item can/will get used by myself and my family, which automatically gets a thumb’s up. The tumblers and the shirt would have gotten my seal of approval alone, but the other items are pretty cool, too.

Next month, the theme will be “Time Travel”, so here’s hoping for some Doctor Who collectibles at the very least. I have yet to get any since I started subscribing to Nerd Block. I’m expecting Back to the Future as well. See you then!
