Black Library announces Warhammer Adventures

0

Black Library, Games Workshop’s publishing arm, made an announcement recently which could quite easily have been mistaken for something from satirical website The Daily Mash – A series of books (set in the worlds of 40K and Age of Sigmar aka Warhammer for the old guard) aimed at young kids.

Warhammer Adventures is exactly that.

Whilst it’s definitely understandable that Games Workshop needs to get young people interested in the games that make up the foundation of its business, and a series of novels aimed at young kids is a potentially great idea, how you actually go about doing this is a bit of a dilemma.

How do you take the setting of 40K, one of constant endless war, one where humanity is a galaxy spanning fascist empire built around the worship of a God emperor, one that has its own secret police charged with fighting off the malevolent influences of gods fixated on murder, disease, hedonism and dark sorcery and make it a vehicle for child friendly adventures?

The art design is great though.

The first titles in the Warhammer Adventures series will be Realm Quest: The City of Lifestone by Tom Huddleston and Warped Galaxies: Attack of the Necron by Cavan Scott

Did Alden Ehrenreich’s Han Solo Live Up to Harrison Ford’s?

Geek Pride previously wrote about how some of the new Star Wars movies don’t measure up to the greatness of the original 70s to 80s trilogy. While Rogue One was without a doubt one of the most impressive additions to the franchise, other recent ones like The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi were mostly met with disappointing reviews.

With the recent release of Solo: A Star Wars Story, however, it would seem that the beloved sci-fi franchise is turning a corner.

To start with, the film has received the original Han Solo’s seal of approval. Comic Book reports that Solo star Alden Ehrenreich was approached by Harrison Ford himself during a press conference that featured the new movie’s cast and crew. With his signature maverick attitude and charisma, Ford surprised Ehrenreich with encouragement as well as positive reviews for Solo. Ehrenreich said that “It’s just such a huge deal to have him really genuinely enjoy the film.” And it looks like Ford is not alone in thinking that the new Solo delivers as promised.

Game Spot reveals that a lot of the critics who have been to early screenings either loved or liked the movie. While the first act was deemed by some to be fairly slow and ‘hit-and-miss clunky’, Solo picks up nicely and delivers a great mix of action, drama, and comedy. Gizmodo’s Germain Lussier calls the movie “a non-stop adventure packed with way more emotion than you’re expecting.” The Nerdist also throws its two cents into the pot, saying that Solo is funny, filled with heart, and offers plenty of surprises which fans are going to love. Even those who found the movie underwhelming still confessed that they still liked it for what it is.

It’s pleasantly surprising how Solo is getting such good feedback. Its many years in production were plagued with changing directors, casting concerns, and even untoward rumours about how the studio hired an acting coach to compensate for the star’s inability to channel the original Han Solo. In an interview with Esquire, former directors Chris Miller and Phil Lord addressed these rumours by explaining that the “coach” was actually writer-director Maggie Kiley, who was brought in as a consultant for the entire cast and crew.

Final director Ron Howard also revealed that they weren’t looking for a play-by-play impersonation of Harrison Ford’s iconic portrayal of the character. Although Ford’s performance inevitably informed the film’s direction, Howard explained that “Han Solo’s character is sort of a vibe and a feel and a body language.” So, instead of just repeating Ford’s performance, they focused on expanding upon other possibilities with regards to the character.

The fact that fans are still highly concerned about the portrayal of Han Solo is a testament to the character’s iconic influence. Despite the fact that Ford’s Solo first appeared onscreen over 40 years ago, both the character as well as the actor remain relevant to the modern zeitgeist. Two years ago, Carrie Fisher revealed that she got involved romantically with Ford when they were filming the first Star Wars movie. While news of the affair spurred lots of discussion, it was hardly surprising as Ford is known for his charm both off and onscreen – a characteristic that has come to define the Han Solo that we all know and love. And whether or not you agree that Alden Ehrenreich lived up to the original Han Solo, it cannot be dismissed that the young star also added new personality aspects to the character. It appears it worked well, considering the praise the film has been getting so far. Ehrenreich’s version of Han Solo is here to stay, and in fact, two more Solo movies are already in the works.

What did you think of Solo: A Star Wars Story? Did it live up to the hype?

(N)SFW-X(XX)

The partying has barely finished for the ninth Sci Fi Weekender (SFW), but work has already started on their next invasion of North Wales for SFW-X.  Much of the programming is still in its early stages, but some guests have already been confirmed already.

People often ask how the weekender is different to any of the other cons that seem to be take place every weekend around the country. SFW is not a convention or a ‘signing event’. Instead, the emphasis is on entertainment and providing a varied schedule of programming, so that there’s always something to do or see.  An event review of SFW-6 can be found here.

The guests at SFW rarely sit behind tables signing autographs for a long line of people, but are on stage or talking to an intimate crowd.  Sometimes, they can be found in the bar or wandering around.

It is the carnivalesque atmosphere and the shared enthusiasm that makes SFW so unique.  And while there is drinking, there is also cosplay, music, dancing, karaoke, live bands, comedy, magic and fun.

The first guest for SFW-X is a legend who always goes down a storm wherever he appeares. He packs out any room he is speaking in, and everyone in convention can hear always him.  That man is Brian Blessed.

Brian has a film, theatre and television career longer than some of us have been alive.  He has appeared in Blackadder, Doctor Who, Flash Gordon (“Gordon’s ALIVE!”), Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. His voice is so recognisable that it has been used on TomTom satnav devices!  Brian is a natural raconteur, regaling fans with stories of his life and adventures, making him a guest always worth catching.

Next is a guest who was sadly unable to make the previous SFW due to work commitments, but has honoured his promise of coming along next year. Christopher Judge, most famously known for his role Teal’c in Stargate SG-1 (“Jaffa KREE!”) will be attending SFW-X.  Judge has also appeared in Andromeda, Stargate Atlantis and The Mentalist.

Joining Brian and Christopher is the author David Gerrold, whose name has become synonymous with Star Trek, but who has done so much more.

David has worked on a dozen different TV series, including Star Trek, Land of the Lost, Twilight Zone, Star Trek: The Next Generation, Babylon 5, and Sliders. He is the author of Star Trek’s most popular episode: ‘The Trouble With Tribbles’.

Many of his novels are considered classics of the science fiction genre, including The Man Who Folded Himself, the ultimate time travel story, and When HARLIE Was One, which is considered one of the most thoughtful tales of artificial intelligence ever written.  David is also a recipient of the Skylark Award for Excellence in Imaginative Fiction, the Bram Stoker Award for Superior Achievement in Horror, and the Forrest J Ackerman lifetime achievement award.

Several other top authors have also been lined up for SFW-X:

Richard Dinnick is the creator and writer of Rob: Young Robin Hood. He is a television writer for shows such as Thunderbirds Are Go! He written several books for Doctor Who including Underwater War, Myths & Legends and The Missy Chronicles. Richard has written prose, scripts and comics for Sherlock Holmes, Stargate, and Sapphire & Steel.

Paul Finch is a former police officer and journalist, turned best-selling crime writer, and is the author of the DS Mark ‘Heck’ Heckenburg and DC Lucy Clayburn novels. Paul has written extensively in fantasy and science-fiction, including for Doctor Who. However, he is probably best known for his crime/thriller novels, specifically the Heckenburg police-actioners, and the Clayburn procedurals.

Emma Newman is a fantasy novelist, having written Between Two Thorns and After Atlas, and won the British Fantasy Society award for Best Short Story in 2015 for A Woman’s Place.  Emma also co-writes and hosts the award-winning podcast Tea and Jeopardy, which involves tea, cake and mild peril.

Emma’s husband and fellow writer Peter Newmanis the author of the Vagrant Trilogy: The Vagrant, The Malice and The Seven, and sometimes pretends to be a butler for the Tea and Jeopardy podcast

Bryony Pearce fled her real job in 2004 to become a writer, a move which is so far working out pretty well.  Her books include Angel’s Fury, The Weight of Souls, Phoenix Rising, Phoenix Burning, Windrunner’s Daughter, Wavefunction and Savage Island.

Thursdays are normally the quieter arrivals night, but this time SFW-X will feature the inaugural ceremony of the SFW Awards on Thursday night.  This award ceremony will be celebrating the very best in science fiction and fantasy.

The SFW Awards ceremony will be a red-carpet affair, where Royalty or VIP Red ticketholders will join authors, actors and writers for a star-studded party where awards will be presented in a number of categories, eight of which will have been voted for by the fans.

So join us (resistance is futile) in March 2019 for Europe’s largest and best science-fiction festival; SFW-X, the tenth anniversary of the very best in science fiction and fantasy.

SFW will take place at Pwllheli in North Wales, on 28th – 31st March 2019.
Tickets can be either booked online or by ringing 0207 097 1521.

UK Games Expo is coming

The UK’s largest hobby games convention, UK Games Expo (UKGE), is set to take place at the Birmingham NEC next month.  Currently in its twelfth year, the UKGE will run from 1st to 3rd June. Last year the event attracted around 32,000 people, and even more are expected to attend this year.

A whopping 300 games companies are expected to attend, from independent start-ups to major developers in the industry.  All will be there to release their latest games and to demonstrate their new prototypes. These include UKGE’s major sponsors; Games Workshop, Catan Studios and Warcradle Studios.

This year’s UKGE will be the biggest yet, with the addition of a full 2nd Hall with even more exhibitors as well as more gaming space – because there can never such a thing as too much gaming space at a gaming convention.

UKGE will be welcoming a special guest from the UK gaming industry: Ian Livingstone is one of the founding fathers of modern tabletop gaming, creator of the Fighting Fantasy series and co-founder of Games Workshop.

As well as board games, UKGE also boasts the largest Role-playing Games schedule in the UK, with hundreds of games sessions in dozens of games systems over the three days. Magic the Gathering events are planned, and UK Games Expo also hosts British Historical Games Society events.

There will be a dedicated Publisher-Designer track, where budding games designers can find out how to design and publish their game ideas.

UKGE will also be playing host to a variety of tournaments, including the Catan UK Championships, the Carcassonne UK Championships, and the Fantasy Flight European championships, including huge X-wing games.

UKGE is not just for dedicated gamers.  Families and interested visitors are just as well catered for, with a dedicated family zone and demonstrations throughout the event of all the best and newest games both for families and those looking for more complex games. Demonstrators will be on hand throughout the day to introduce new players to the games, making it an easy, safe, and fun event to attend.

Alongside all that is a food festival – because, let’s face it, gaming is hungry work – and a full seminar programme, looking at all aspects of the games world

Day, weekend and family tickets for the UKGE are available now and can be booked online, here.

Avengers Infinity War – A Masterpiece, shame about the end.

WARNING SPOILERS ALL UP IN YOUR

FACE

Check out our podcast at the end of the article!

I’ve enjoyed every Marvel film release since Iron man. Granted some have been slightly lower on the scale than others but all have been great and enjoyable films and Infinity War is no exception. The question is does Infinity War reach or surpass the lofty heights of the first Avengers film or even Winter Soldier? Does it dethrone these kings of films? Well yes and no and I’ll explain.

So first off before i start picking at it and everyone starts hating me, Avengers: Infinity War is a top film, truly one of the greater ones. Action packed, emotional, funny, but not over the top like Thor: Ragnarok , and nerve wracking; you will literally find yourself on the edge of your seat and getting somewhat anxious on numerous occasions.

On top of this every character is given time to proverbially shine, with a good balance of screen time to let them impact the story line without focusing too much on just one. Coupled with Josh Brolin’s Thanos and the apparent impending doom that the film portends and you have a recipe for the greatest Marvel film to date….if it wasn’t for the fact that the end sorta ruins it.

WHAT?! YOU TAKE THAT BACK MATT GEARY.. NERD RAGE, NERD RAGE!

ok, ok calm down there brothers and sisters, let me explain…

First he positive:

Great CGI and measured laughs aside, Thanos and the way he is played by Brolin is a Master class on how such a powerful being should be portrayed and what made him such a threat. Calm, slightly amused by lesser beings, rational, even… fair… but always with a goal to be achieved and at any cost.

Now this may sound quite like any of our heroes with, in my mind, a lot of similarities to Thor: a knowledge of how powerful he is, a cocky demeanour and self assurance, a facade of strength and invulnerability but with a well of emotion that percolates to the top now and again. But where as Thor wants to save the universe by protecting as many people as possible, Thanos, in a mirror image of this, is willing to destroy half of it to achieve the same goal and in lies the genius of the character ( Comic and film). You actually find yourself understanding him and, in some ways, sympathising with him too; it is very odd.

On 2 occasion he gives instances where the people’s of planets pushed themselves and their societies to near failure but where as on Titan no one listened and it’s Death came ( to his lament) Thanos was able to prevent an extinction event on Gamora’s planet, Zen-Whoberi, by killing half the people and so freeing up resources for the other half. He basically saved the planet and this, knowing how humanoid creatures are, he has done across the galaxy. The tough call to save people from themselves and bring balance to the universe ( allegedly )

This leads to some interesting questions in your own mind; if you could save your planet from death would you sacrifice half of your population? Is a great evil acceptable if it in turn brings about a greater good? A tough call  and one that throws up a lot of moral dilemmas; something that really plays to the strength of Thanos as a character and makes Infinity War, very deep indeed and Thanos a multi layered adversary.

The thing is, logical as it is in the context and with all other factors aside, genocide and the death of innocents, at random ( as is the case) is never going to be the right way or even the hard way.. in fact it’s the easy way because you don’t have to fight and live you just have to kill and let people die.

Where Thanos and the Avengers differ is their views. Both are trying to save the universe but where as Thanos has it in his head that there is only one way, the Avengers will try everything else before the tough call has to be made; Scarlet Witch having to kill Vision at the end being a prime example of this… all other options were exhausted and the life of the many out weighed the life of the singular hero; even if this hero was the man you love.

But where as Thanos is able to shield himself from most of the emotional and moral shackles of his actions, the Avengers are not and this is where the fine line between being a hero and a villain is and where Infinity War really hits home… is humanoid life worth the price to be paid?

In the mind of the Avengers it is too great of a price and all dying in honour and together is better than half surviving in misery and shame where as Thanos epitomises the overly logical, cold and unfeeling where the answer is a simple one when he can detach himself from it.. ish.

Now, at this point I am sure you are somewhat confused, where is my beef? Why the issue? Well I don’t have an issue with the film as a whole, I honestly think it deserves to be up there with the First Avengers Film and Winter Soldier… BUT, my issue is how Infinity War could have topped them all had it not shied off towards the end and softened a rather dark and edgy film and therefore slightly undermining the aforementioned points.

Now for the negative:

As heroes, and characters we like, go, we’re had a pretty easy ride of it, with Quick Silver being the only main permadead character I can think of in 10 years of films. Infinity War takes this safety net and nearly immediately destroys it with the death of two characters in quick succession, Heimdall and sadly Loki, it then carries on where it started and adds Gamora to the list and starts pushing towards the apparent inevitable demise of Ironman and the Cap.. not since the massacre at the start of the Transformers animated film have we Geeks been assailed with the death of so many beloved characters.

These deaths, and the nearly inevitable deaths of Avenger alums, Rodgers and or Stark, would, in my personal opinion, make this one of the best and emotionally charged Marvel films to date and that’s not even after taking into account everything else. This film was building towards something truly epic, truly unheard of, truly different BUT then something strange happens…

On two occasions, on Titan and in Wakanda, Thanos faces off against our two main heroes but despite nearly dying, they live… interesting. Ok not a twist I was expecting but I guess that’s the point. The Russo brothers wanted to keep us guessing. hmmm ok, I understand that but who else is going to get knocked off to bring me my Game of Thrones esq, WTF just happened?! OMG, why would they do that? I’m never going to stop talking about this.. ever.. moment?

With a click of his fingers and after a great line “you should have aimed for my head “ Thanos, after everything, wins and people start to disappear as he wipes out half of the universe and fulfils his balance and the culmination of his plan. This in itself isn’t an issue, far from it; it is very dark having a film where the bad guy wins at the end.. I love it. The problem is who died and their connection with up coming films.

This is it! He won, hes done it! Thanos clicks his fingers and we get an cascading evaporation of heroes…ouw we may be getting a bit of a double bluff here Russo Brothers you crafty foxes you, and we thought they were safe.. huh.. what?

Scarlet Witch, Falcon, Star Lord, Groot, Drax, Buckey, Dr Strange, Nick Fury, ( after credit scene) Black Panther and even Spider-Man. Um ok. Now for many this might be devastating end to a film with some of the universe’s favourite characters disintegrating before our very eyes  buuuuuuuuut look at the deaths and especially Spider Man, Black Panther and the rest of the Guardians of the Galaxy.

We’ve gone from a story that was making us feel like certain characters had no chance of returning, we had a genuine and concerning threat, this could have been one of the greatest films to date but at the very end, with specific deaths we are told… “aww you guys, its ok, they may be “dead” but we all know they will have more films coming up soon so there is no way we’ve permakilled them. Leave the cinema comforted in the know that everything will be reversed in the next film.” WTF GUYS!? how lame is that?!

I don’t want to be consoled, I don’t want to know whats going to happen in the next film.. I want uncertainty and questions, something to look forward to.

Had Cap or Ironman died, with say Black Widow, Bucky, Scarlet Witch, Mantis, Falcon and maybe a few other tertiary characters ( a shot of Hawkeye maybe with his family eating dinner and turning to dust) then you would have had little or no option but to think this was permanent and so giving Thanos’s victory a more definitive and potentially unchangeable end.. instead of shock you would have been devastated and like a Game of Thrones book / episode it would have burned into your mind for ever as the greatest and saddest super hero film of all time.It would have also really challenged you for the next film and not sign posted how it was going to end.

As it is, the Russo brothers have basically got rid of all the new characters / franchises and are leaving us with the old Avengers team, ready to do battle and go all Quantum Leap, “putting right what once went wrong” . Thing is, i feel it is very likely we will get a few permadeaths in End Game (I think that’s what they are calling it) but even if Cap and or Ironman snuff it then I’m not sure if i’ll care as much. Sure i’ll be upset because i love them as heroes but End Game will just be about putting right a wrong, they have nothing to lose and everything to gain, unlike Infinity War where it was more desperate and where they had everything to lose; deaths therefore would have more gravitas and meaning.

I loved the film, truly did, up until the end which just made me feel, well, slightly cheated and disappointed. I’m not mad at you Russo brothers, i’m disappointed. You had something amazing, something unique, something that could have gone down in history as the all time greatest Superhero film, but to save a few peoples feelings you chickened out and gave us an ending we knew wouldn’t stick.. shame.. shame…shame.

oh and on a random note

Where the hell is Valkyrie? And Why the Feck has the hulk turned into a stroppy teenager?!

So there it is ladies and gents, my view on the matter.. an amazing film that was tainted by a end it didn’t deserve.

If you agree, disagree, bit of both, or have other views and feelings about it then please comment below and make sure to share, like and get involved!
