Carrie Kelley: Robin VI?

0

Damian Wayne is dead. I shed exactly one single tear for the brave little soldier before eagerly speculating who the next Robin will be, because Batman without Robin is like S without M.

Rumours suggested Stephanie Brown would be making a return, as DC hinted they would be re-introducing a populare female character. This had me in two minds, as whilst I love Stephanie, I didn’t want her to go back to square one as a character. However, much to my ambivalence, DC revealed today that it is not Stephanie Brown who’s coming back, but Carrie Kelley.

Carrie Kelley was an alternate-universe Robin, created by Frank Miller (before he came off his meds) for The Dark Knight Returns. The 13-year-old child of neglectful stoner parents, she was rescued from a mugging by Batman and inspired to spend her lunch money on a Robin costume and track down the man himself. Batman took her on of course, because a 13-year-old in a fancy-dress costume who couldn’t fend off the calibre of muggers who target children is exactly what he needs!
Say what you will about Frank Miller, but at least he’s open about the fact that the Robins are Batman’s crew of diversions/human shields.

So, let’s have a look at DC’s released image of her from Batman & Robin #19:
robin--525x700

Well, she’s holding a house party, so I’d wager she’s a bit older than 13; and in what may or may not be a nod to Barbara Gordon’s origin, what starts as a cosplay could turn into her hero identity.  Batman & Robin writer Peter Tomasi has this to say about her:
She’s a college kid who’s got spunk and speaks her mind… This is not an alternate-earth Robin, this is simply a girl named Carrie Kelley, who we learn knew Damian… she’s not exactly the ‘new Robin,’ but I don’t want to spoil the story… let’s just say that it’s a helluva lot longer than ‘one issue.’ I’ve got plans for Carrie that play well into the future.
Well, we figured she’s not Robin. Not yet at least. Issue 19 has been retitled Batman & Red Robin, with plans to have different guest stars/meat shields each issue. Whether Cassie will take up the position eventually, or fulfil a different role, or if this is just an elaborate troll by DC to distract us from the real Robin (Damian not dead? Harper Row? Dare I suggest… Squire?) is up for passionate fan debate.

Little Kids Gaming Books

Remember those old Ladybird books when you were a kid with the great artwork and classic stories? No? Christ I’m old! Well anyway, LA-based blogger & artist Joebot has created some book covers for books I wish someone would write!

Joebot's series of kid's gaming book covers

Joebot talked about the merging of children’s books & videogames on his blog:
”I recently have been really into the artwork of the classic Little Golden Books. There’s something very charming about their simplicity, and yet they are some of the books that I remember most from my early childhood… I’ve been thinking about some of the classic games that people will still (hopefully) point to years from now and hold them up as games that made a difference, and possibly, for some child out there, Portal or Skyrim will be a memory from their early childhood.”
Aren’t these just awesome? It’ll probably never happen, but I’m seriously crossing my fingers that someone writes some child-friendly short stories based on these titles to make them real! Anyone up for it? I’ll even have a word with Joebot and see if he’d illustrate the book should someone want to!

I’m deadly serious by the way – I’d love to have something like this to read to my kids!

Anyway enough of my fawning over something not very likely… here are some larger versions of each individual image… if you’d like to order some prints from Joebot’s Etsy shop, then click here to order all 3, or the links by each image if you want them individually.

Black Ops 2: Uprising – All the details

The strategic “leaks” of information surrounding Black Ops 2 DLC has been quite promptly followed by the release of official updates – it was for Revolution, and now Treyarch are following suit with their new DLC – “Uprising“.

This is what Treyarch are calling “the most fan-centric DLC package” they’ve ever created – here’s the nitty-gritty of Treyarch’s latest DLC:

– 4 new Multiplayer Maps; “Magma”, “Encore”, “Vertigo”, and the “Studio”.
– New zombie “adventure” dubbed “Mob Of The Dead”.

There’s no new weapon included in this DLC, so sorry to disappoint you fans of Revolution’s Peacekeeper looking for a new addition to your arsenal.

However there’s a few surprises here & there – most of all for me is the return of fan favourite map from the original Black Ops – “Firing Range” has been reskinned as a movie backlot, and is now known as “Studio“. So all you camping bastards who stayed in the tall lookout towers can rejoice once more.

The Magma map looks great, as it now introduces (as the name suggests) magma as a hazard, much like Hydro uses water – if you’re not paying attention, you can inadvertantly do your best Gollum impressions as you get melted into goo. It’s also geared towards the players carrying multiple weapon types… so break out that overkill perk guys & girls.

Vertigo looks a lot of fun, taking place in a Skyscraper in India, with the ability to jump from route-to-route by shooting out windows… I imagine taking the high ground may be important on that one.

The last multiplayer map is Encore, taking place in an outdoor amphitheatre in London where controlling the stage is paramount. Looking at the gameplay footage in the trailer, this looks like absolute carnage.

The new zombie mode “Mob Of The Dead” is definitely one for movie enthusiasts… it takes place in the prohibition era on Alcatraz where you control one of four mobsters, voiced by none other than Ray Liotta, Chaz Palminteri, Michael Madsen and Joe Pantoliano. Treyarch have been quoted as saying this will be one of the most terrifying zombie experiences yet, and will incorporate a new “purgatory” system when players get killed.

As usual with Call of Duty DLC, it’s available to Xbox 360 players first, with the expected release date being April 16th. PS3 & PC players will have to wait the standard month before they get their hands on it though.

Check out the gameplay trailer below:

Mystery Society Special 2013 – 8GPP

0

Nick and the rest of the Mystery Society set out to do a deal with a mysterious collector of Monsters.

Mystery Society created by Steve Niles, Ashley Wood and Finoa Staples is one of the best examples of a great comic that just disappeared because hardly anyone was reading it. A pulp inspired adventure comic based around the team of the Mystery Society. Which consists of Nick and Anastasia Mystery, who after winning the lottery devotes their millions to solving mysteries and investigating the occult amongst other things.

The other members of the team include Secret Skull an undead crime fighter (who originally appeared in another series by Niles), Jules Verne or rather his brain housed in a robot body he built for himself and the Atomic Twins, a pair of twin girls with strange powers.

Originally appearing in 2010, what was supposed to be an on-going series got dropped after 5 issues due to sales and in a twist of fate it was this that lead to Fiona Staples working on Brian K Vaughn’s Saga, after Niles was asked for a recommendation.

This one-off story features all the things that made the Mystery Society so good and unlike the previous five issues which were quickly tied up despite the team only just getting together, the gang is all here from the start.

Secret Skull and Verne begin their descent.66497117a0f5961302a224daab4e48d1

The story starts with Nick and Anastasia aboard a ship in an undisclosed location, with Nick busy emptying the contents of his stomache over the railing into the ocean whilst the Aromic Twins laugh at his sea sickness. By the second page it’s clear what Nile’s influences are as Verne and Secret Skull are taking a retro styled mini submarine to find the underwater lair of the mysterious individual they are making a trade with. This trade is never really explained although it does involve the skull of Poe.

There’s some great banter between Secret Skull and Verne as they arrive at the strange base, with Verne saying ‘As of the internet, most of my novels have been realised’ which gets the response ‘Better you than Nostradamus’ from Secret Skull. The pair are not exactly surprised when their strange host double crosses them and are unfazed when he threatens to kill them with poison gas, with the pair non-chalantly saying ‘Already dead’ and ‘Robot’.

As the story progresses Frankenstein’s Monster makes an appearance and it’s final two panels sum up why Mystery Society really, really deserves a second chance, despite this the being the group’s final outing according to Niles since IDW ‘can’t sell creator owned right now’.

Meanwhile……..

Art for this adventure is by Andrew Ritchie since Fiona Staples is busy amazing everyone with eyes on Saga. Although Ritchie definitely does a good job pulling off the pulp science fiction aesthetic. The characters look good and undersea segment definitely let Ritchie run riot compared to the interior setting of the rest of the story, with Sharks, turtles, seahorses and coral reefs all making an appearance.

There’s something inherently charming in Mystery Society a sort of more fun take on Alan Moore’s League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Verne’s refined English and Secret Skull’s snarky sarchasm make for a great combination and it’s got heart too, with a confused Frankenstein’s Monster wondering why he’s been freed from imprisonment, to be told by Secret Skull ‘Even if you are dead, or reanimated, or whatever, you still don’t deserve to be locked up in a cage.’

They really should make a print out of those two last panels. Seriously.

The trouble with a book series…

0

I have a problem. You might think it insignificant, but I have a problem. That problem is that I love series, I absolutely adore them. If it’s televised or printed in a serialized fashion, giving me years upon years to fall in love with one character or another, I’m going to love it forever and beyond (yes, I am aware of the incongruity there). There’s just something about growing up with a character, learning all there is to know about him or her, finding their flaws and their hidden depths, that perhaps 300 pages of a stand alone book or the 120 minutes of a movie would never be able to cover. Imagine if Harry Potter had come in a single book. Or Percy Jackson’s adventures would’ve been limited to one volume and the list could go on. Or perhaps imagine a world where you had to learn everything there was to know about The Walking Dead in a single installment. It just wouldn’t work.

books

However, despite my undying and unwavering love for all things that come in series, forcing me to wait on the brink of insanity for months and months until I get my next fix, there’s just one big problem. With TV shows a cancellation or a change in writers would fix a problem, the same can’t be said about an author. You can’t just club J.K. Rowling over the head and take away her work, you can’t kick J.R. Ward to the curve and tell her to stop typing up about her favourite bunch of vampires, you can’t argue with Cassandra Clare until she relinquishes her pen and the list can go on and on.

What’s the problem you ask, oh, ever so innocently? To put it in simple terms: things go stale. While I doubt ethereal women walk around offering themselves as muses to those that share their imagination with us, I do believe there’s a certain drive that all writers have when they put pen to paper, bringing stories to life and sometimes, once they’ve hit volume 20 of a certain series it tends to dry out. It’s not the case for everyone, but lately I’ve been noticing that the more certain authors write, the more repetitive their ideas get.

What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun. Sounds catchy, doesn’t it? Almost like a nice little tune. Well, hold your horses, I’m actually quoting the Holy Bible here or Suits. Whichever came first. The bottom line is that in truth, we can’t claim we had an original idea that no one in the entire history of humanity hasn’t had. But what happens when instead of taking something from someone else we end up recycling our own ideas? For plain ol’ me, with no impact on thousand or millions of people, not much. But when you’re a world famous author and you end up recreating your own characters in order to add the spice you’ve been told is missing from your latest novels, perhaps it’s time to put your series to rest and start working on something new.

To use a proper example: I love Black Dagger Brotherhood. No, really, I do. I know all the characters, I’ve read 6 out of the 11 books in less than a week, I finished the rest as they were published, I own them all…But see, just short of a week ago, the 11th book came out and I was as excited as a Duracell bunny after sipping on Red Bull. And yet, I ended up closing the book feeling incredibly bitter. While it wasn’t bad, all the new characters that were introduced, probably in an effort to keep things rolling for a few more years, were actually carbon copies of the former characters that had once upon a time captured the hearts of the readers.

get-kids-to-read

It’s the same with books that add love triangles over love triangles, a distant cousin that is suddenly an alien from outer space or any plot that jumps the shark so high-up in the air that it puts Fonzie to shame. Sometimes people should learn to just…give up. I understand the need of feeding the milking cow, but once your own fans, who have stuck around, for decades sometimes, seem to waver in their loyalty because you’re trying hard to reinvent the wheel, take a step back and try to gain some perspective. (Supernatural I’m looking at you! – yes, I went on a TV show tangent here)

The bottom line? All good things come to an end, it might hurt and we might want to cling to the stories and the people we’ve come to love, to understand, sometimes better than we understand ourselves, but we have to let go. Revisit, rekindle our affection for them and their tales of happiness and pain, but ultimately give up on trying to pull more out of their stories than we can or should take. Money makes the world go round, that is truer than I want to believe, but there are times when you have to realise there’s only so much you can do to one character without ending up re-hashing old stories and opening up old wounds that you’ve already healed in volume 5 out of the twenty you wrote. *cough* Cassandra Clare *cough* Writing a book series, then a prequel and a sequel is overkill and we all know it. Even the cash cow.

cash-cow

Don’t get me wrong, there are people who could keep things fresh after a hundred novels with the very same characters from the start to the end, but those people are rare and far between and they have all my admiration, the rest…I suppose ultimately it’s up to each and every one of us to determine whether we enjoy this particular money making scheme or not, if you want to share your thoughts on the matter, we have a lovely comment section awaiting your input.

Happy Birthday RDJ!

On April 4th 1965, a man was born, and little did his parents know what they had bestowed upon this world. A man like no other. I am of course talking about Robert Downey Jr. I am a huge fan of this guy (a fangirl, if you please) and this is my birthday celebration for him. So without further ado, here are some of my favourite gifs of the man, the legend, Mr Robert Downey Jr. (Don’t expect them to make sense, they just made me laugh and/or squeal when I saw them).

And my personal favourite:

Happy Birthday you legend!

Justice League Dark #19

0

1d50ced2311b0e804059be362fd1f0af

John Constantine finds himself the target of an attack by The Cult of the Cold Flame but this is just a diversion so someone can steal The House of Mystery. Meanwhile Deadman meets with A.R.G.U.S who have a tempting offer.

Despite a wobbly start Justice League Dark has established itself as the team book for people that don’t really ‘do’ superheroes.

Following the Death of Magic story, Frankenstein seems to have been drafted in is a member of the team now. This can only be a good development as he provides both intelligence and brute force and it’s good to see the character hasn’t disappeared into obscurity after his own criminally underrated title got cancelled a while back.

There’s plenty of things going on in this issue and some of the ideas that are coming to the fore could lead to some great character explorations.

Deadman is shown getting vicarious thrills literally after possessing someone, this is something that’s never been dealt with before and the idea of being able to experience things without having to deal with any of the negative consequences is an intriguing one – hopefully this aspect of Brand’s character will feature more in future.

Xanadu lets on that she knew of events that were going to happen but did nothing to prevent them, which doesn’t sit well with Constantine and could cause animosity amongst the group going forward.

Deadman gets his thrills whenever and however he can.

28d55aa1f80796b8e67942368b7a0209-justiceleaguedark194Swamp Thing appears in this issue after being summoned against his will by Constantine, which really doesn’t go down well, and makes for probably the worst reunion ever – although to Constantine they’ve never met. Swamp Thing and Constantine trade barbed words with Holland not wasting time in showing his anger at being wrenched from Louisiana at Constantine’s behest.

It’s been pretty clear from the start that nobody really likes Constantine and they’re even less likely to trust him with the exception of Zatanna, this is brought to the fore again when Frankenstein says he has “the tongue of a rat”.

To further sour the relationship between Swamp Thing and Constantine, when Holland tries to locate the now missing House of Mystery something goes wrong. Very wrong. The team members find themselves in their own personal nightmares; Constantine faces a doppelganger formed from his own blood, Xanadu is assaulted by the skeletal remains of her former lovers and Frankenstein has to face his son after seeing him kill his former wife amongst other disturbing scenes. Even Swamp Thing himself is a prisoner in the House of Mystery.

Swamp Thing is not pleased with Constantine’s arrogance.

This is the kind of story that makes you want the next issue now to see what happens, and that’s the best you can expect out of any title.

I also love how nobody on the team actually refers to themselves as the ‘Justice League Dark’ it’s actually used mockingly by A.R.G.U.S as a way to point how they’re all misfits and will never be the Justice League of America.

I think it needs noting that the art team have consistently delivered on Justice League Dark, Mikel Janin‘s layouts have made for a solid foundation for the art team. There’s more evidence of that in this issue with plenty of busy frames, but nothing is ever confusing and it retains a clarity despite being detailed. The nightmare scenes are particularly well done and Swamp Thing’s encounter with Constantine really sells how physically powerful Holland is.

A Lament For Lucasarts & Star Wars 1313

Remember that scene in The Fellowship Of The Ring when the Elves are singing a lament to Gandalf? Well countless Star Wars geeks around the world today sing a lament for Lucasarts, as Disney announce they are closing the studio and cancelling all current projects.

RIP Lucasarts

Feel free to press the Vader “Instant No Button”, for use in dire circumstances.

Vader Noooo

Kotaku report that Lucasarts staff were informed of the closure this morning, with around 150 staff affected by the shutdown. This also means that Star Wars: First Assault and the much anticipated Star Wars: 1313 have both been cancelled, though they could feasibly be licensed to other developers.

LucasFilm provided a statement regarding the studio closure:

Unfortunately it's very likely that Star Wars 1313 will never see the light of day.
Unfortunately it’s very likely that Star Wars 1313 will never see the light of day.
“After evaluating our position in the games market, we’ve decided to shift LucasArts from an internal development to a licensing model, minimizing the company’s risk while achieving a broader portfolio of quality Star Wars games. As a result of this change, we’ve had layoffs across the organization. We are incredibly appreciative and proud of the talented teams who have been developing our new titles.”
This hasn’t been a surprise to some, as recruitment within the company was put on hold since Disney acquired the studio last year, but unfortunately the speculation is now confirmed.

Founded in 1982, the studio leaves behind a legacy that includes such classics as the Sam & Max series along with Dark Forces & Dark Forces 2 which preceded the Jedi Knight games. Their later successess included The Force Unleashed games, though their last title was unfortunately Star Wars Kinect – a decidedly lacklustre title.

Heroes for Sale – Manchester Film & Comic Con, June 29th & 30th

0

Heroesforsalecclogo1

This June Geek Pride shall be attending what is set to be an epic event in the geek calendar,  Heroes for Sale – Manchester Film & Comic Con.  Taking place at Event City (the second largest venue outside London) on the 29th & 30th June, this con has something for every type of geek going, so lets take a look at the run down.

I’ll start with the arenas, I know right, arenas, which should tell you how massive this is going to be. In the past I have found many Manchester based cons, well, tightly packed, suggesting the organisers seriously underestimate the number of geeks in the area. But not this this time. The venue is split into 5 arenas under one roof. These include Comic Zone, Sci-fi & Film, Cosplay, Gaming and Exhibition, so I defy you not to find an interest in that lot.

The Comic Zone will include an artist alley, comic dealers and a trade and swap area. Comic geeks you have the opportunity to not only mingle with your own, but get sketches drawn, comics signed and may be discover something new.   The Sci-fi & Film arena brings the usual memorabilia and autograph purchasing opportunities but also the Studio Showcase where major studios will be promoting their new releases and the opportunity to see a few newcomers to the world of film at the Independent Film Festival taking place. With a bonus photo opportunity in the Props World exhibit.

Well it wouldn’t be a con without Cosplay and boy are they catering for this. Not only are they holding cosplay competitions; best anime, best game, best film icon an best superhero, with cash prizes; but there is also a coswalk, make up room and dedicated Steam Punk area. But what caught my eye is larp dedicated environment, I don’t larp but I’m very excited for people who do.

Gamers what have they got in store for you? Well how about Player Time, giving you the chance to play games in advance of their official release. But a big draw for gamers is going to be the tournaments, Call of Duty and Halo 4  Here is what they are proposing:

[box_light]This June you are invited to take part in an epic winner takes all Team Deathmatch Tournament. You and 5 other soldiers/spartans are needed to form a team – you will battle your way through 31 other teams to walk away with £2k prize money [/box_light]

You need to register before the event here: Halo 4 and Call of Duty (X-box & PS3).

The Exhibition arena is an exciting element to the day. With the promise of a Mos Eisley themed bar and many props from the likes of Star Wars, Star Trek, as well as screen cars, you would be a fool to miss it. As a Whovian I want to give a special mention to the dedicated Doctor Who area celebrating 50 years of the iconic Doctor.

Not only will attending this con offer you a guranteed good time but you may even walk away with a World Record. That’s right Heroes for Sale need you, Jedi or Sith, to take part in the biggest ever lightsaber battle. For the attempt to go ahead they need a whooping 5000 Jedi and 5000 Sith and your participation will be duly awarded with entry to the con, entry to the Jedi tournament and a certificate to celebrate your world record. Sign up here for this monumental attempt

The world record is not the only opportunity for Star Wars fans, there will also be a professionally refereed 100 Jedi vs 100 Sith tournament, with a cash prize for the winner. Click here for more details and to sign up.

In attendance at the overall event will be sculptors, photographers, tattooists and graffiti artists, however, no con would be complete without the obligatory guest stars. Amongst this years confirmed guests are Claudia Christian (Babylon 5), Ghost busting Ernie Hudson, Star Wars favourites David Prowse and Kenny Baker as well as the 6th Doctor, Colin Baker and wrestling star Chris Masters. With more guests still to be announced it is clear there will be something for almost every fandom.

‘Wow’ I hear you say ‘what a jam packed geek fest Heroes For Sale have in store for us, but what is it going to cost?’ Well considering the amount of awesomeness packed into the two days, the price is extremely reasonable. A one day entry pass is £15 (10am-8pm), £20 for early entry (9am).  A weekend pass for the Saturday and Sunday is a bargain at £25, but that is not all- ever considerate of us geek parents, kids under 12 go free! But there is more…you won’t need to park on the other side of the world because this venue has 3000 free car parking spaces! So grab your tickets here and we at Geek Pride look forward to meeting you, at what promises to be one of the best cons this year.
