Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon – Stand-Alone Spin-Off Coming Soon

0

Originally thought to be yet another April fools prank, Far Cry: Blood Dragon is due to released on PSN, XBLA and PC on May 1st. The game will be a stand-alone title, featuring a single-player campaign using the Far Cry 3 engine, set in the future, but one based on the vision of films and cartoon of the 80’s – amusingly, the year 2007. It will feature cyborg soldiers, mutant goats, cyber dogs and dinosaurs. If that’s not enough for you, there will also be cheesy one-liners delivered by none other than 80’s action film legend, Michael Biehn. How cool does that sound?

The  price for the console versions has not been confirmed yet, but steam currently has it marked at $14.99/£11.99. For a trip down memory lane and for a chance to be blinded by explosions and neon visuals, I think it’s well worth coughing up a few quid for.

Interview with Juliette Terzieff

Okay…let’s rock this boat. By now you should assume you’ve been properly saluted and given all due respect, given your rank in the ZSC and your standing in the writing/entertainment community, so we can get down to business (and no, we’re not defeating the huns).

You’re a co-founder and leader of the Red Brigade in the Zombie Survival Crew, a “movement” that has really terzieffpromo11picked up with The Walking Dead’s success, how did the ZSC come to be?

I’m a former foreign war correspondent and one night in 2009 while messing around with fellow writers on the Internet, they joked I’d be the perfect person to lead a survival crew during the zombiepocalypse. It became a running joke and a couple weeks into The Walking Dead’s first season I wrote a blog post detailing which characters on the show I’d like to have as part of my crew. A couple of the show’s actors saw the post, commented on it and my readers went wild.

Since then the Zombie Survival Crew, which is free to join and open to anyone, has taken on a life of its own with thousands of members in 14 countries all working to prepare to survive any manmade or natural disaster. We’ve got dozens of celebrity commanders including Michael Rooker, Norman Reedus, Ernie Hudson and Kristin Bauer Van Straten—each of whom has one or more real-world social or developmental issues that they work to address.

I’ve known you for a while, albeit solely via social networks and while you’re rubbing elbows with some big names in the entertainment business, you’ve still managed to stay really down-to-earth. Did you ever find it difficult not to allow yourself to be swayed by the glamorous lifestyle of the rich and famous?

Honestly, no. All of the actors I work with are laid back hard-working folks. They labor intensely on their craft to meet the expectations of their fans and to take opportunities to work on causes close to their hearts. I tend to put in really long days, like 16-17 hours sometimes, trying to get everything done because I know how hard they’re all working as well, and there is so much to be done. Many times, like now, I find myself sitting in my pajamas still working when more sensible people would probably be asleep for the night.

On the 25th of February, Blindsided by The Walking Dead has hit the shelves, a book which you’ve co-authored with IronE Singleton (better known to TWD fans as T-Dog) What can you tell us about this book; how did it come to be?

It’s a book that has been decades in the writing really. IronE had an extremely challenging upbringing and somehow managed, with faith and love in his heart, to overcome every step of the way. His ability to get past it all is powerful testimony for everyone. IronE has a message of hope he’d been working to deliver and the time just seemed right to put his story into book form.

What drew you to this story and what do you think will resonate most with the people that read it?

The honesty, and the love. Not once in the telling of his story does IronE shy away from the often painful truths of what he experienced growing up, of the mistakes he made along the way. But through it all, he managed to keep hope, faith and love alive…and if he can do it, all of us can.

BookCover_FrontFinal_smFrom the glimpses we’ve been given through press releases, we learn that it’s the story of one man’s struggle against unfavorable odds, while writing it, were you two hoping it might become an inspiration? Is there someone in particular this book is addressed to or is it simply an exorcism for IronE?

Absolutely. It is my sincere hope, and I believe IronE’s as well, that the book will help others. The scope of his experiences and the material in the book hold insights for a broad array of readers – athletes, aspiring actors, inner-city residents, young women, parents. I wouldn’t say it’s an exorcism. Far from it. It is a message of hope and love from IronE to the other members of our human family.

Is there anything you would’ve liked to include in the book but it never made the final cut?

Not really. The book is full to the point of bursting with powerful details about the most intimate parts of IronE’s life. He left out almost nothing in the retelling of his story.

Could you tell us something about your personal experience of working with IronE? He’s quite beloved by his fans, but few get to truly know him- anything you could tell us about him that we won’t find out from the book?

Hmm, that’s tough. I’d say anyone who reads the book will know this remarkable man very well. Oh wait! I’ve got one…he makes a mean barbeque! Seriously.

Since you’ve had your own fair share of experiences abroad and domestic, as a war correspondent, as a writer… can we expect a biography of your own to hit the shelves soon?

Perhaps one day. The idea is certainly percolating in my head. I even have a working title: Mudbugs with Rooker. Check back with me in a decade, if I haven’t written memoirs yet, I’ll explain that title choice.

Minecraft: The must have toy for geeklings

0

I have been a parent for ten years and during this time I have endeavoured to give my children the best start in life. We are geek and as such our children are growing up in an environment surrounded by tech and gaming. As any good parent would, I began downloading phonics and maths games for the children as I’m all about education. However, I found these rarely kept them interested for very long and they soon reverted back to the likes of Angry Birds. But that’s okay because learning isn’t just about literacy and maths, there is a whole world of science and physics, art and more. When I found games that targeted these areas the children were not only absorbed by them, but extremely successful, but today I would like to talk to you about one game that every child should play.

Before we start it is important to remind fellow parents of the importance of children understanding e-safety. We know the internet is a great and unlimited resource but it also full of bad bad people using anonymity as an excuse for offensive behaviour. There are many great websites with advice for parents and cartoons targeted for children’s understanding, such as kidsmart.org. Make sure you and your children are clued up!

So what should every child play? Well Minecraft of course.  I’m guessing the majority of you out there are familiar with the game that lets you build anything from a house or whole civilisations, and teaches you basic survival, living off the environment whilst trying to stay alive during the night.

Minecraft-minecraft-19669220-750-600

Though it is considered a game I view it as a toy, a virtual toy, like Lego but a lot cheaper and less painful to stand on. When you break Minecraft down to its basic subjects, it teaches science, engineering, technology and maths. In fact there is a website dedicated to the use of Minecraft in Education with lots of ideas on the different subjects you can cover. The free to play demo means an opportunity to try before you buy, but at a one off cost of £17.95, it is well worth the purchase for the hours of fun it brings.

The likes of mods and texture packs mean the potential is endless, no finishing the game and then it becoming redundant, but this also has another advantage. Basic IT, learning the ways of the internet, figuring out simple things such as which is the real link and not some camouflaged ad that will screw up your computer.  My girl is so adept that she has to show me how to uninstall the stupid search bar from the stupid…anyway needless to say, she has skills I do not. My daughter is considered gifted and talented in ICT, I’m not saying that is solely the result of Minecraft but it certainly contributed.

Another plus for this game is it is not heavily reliant on the ability to read and means that my son began playing at just 3 years old, having watched his sister beforehand, and now at 5 he is becoming a little pro. I know many people would probably criticise the amount of time my children spend on laptops or gaming, but children take the experiences away with them. Both at school and home Xander uses Lego to construct a house he would like to make in Minecraft, he draws designs of giant volcano he wants to build,  I also encourage him to label his drawings so Bam! Snuck some literacy in there.

But what blew me out of the water though was my daughter’s ability. Now 10 years old, I find her running her own empire, instructing fellow players on exactly how she wants the castle to be built, and to be honest being very bossy about the whole thing. When I asked her what she was up to the other day she retorted “Showing these guys how to do something because they don’t know, how can they not know?”  Which led to a sit down talk about how to treat other players to get the best out of them, if she is to rule an empire she must be a firm but fair leader.

Over the years I have learnt a few lesson so thought it my responsibility to share with you my top tips:

1. Make sure they have mastered the basic skills before allowing them to go survival or it will end in tears, seriously loud tears.

2.  Children must understand why it is they need to kill the animals, you don’t want little psychopaths on your hands. It is a good lesson to learn where your food comes from, but endlessly slaughtering animals for fun is not a good direction to go.

3. Don’t become controlling. It is easy slip from casual observer to controlling parent. If you find yourself saying things like “No if you put it here then…” or “That won’t work, why don’t  you…” Then stop it immediately. Whilst you believe you are being helpful what you are doing is stifling creativity and stopping them learning from mistakes. We all must learn from our failures, children included.

4. But don’t wander and leave them to it, especially in the early days. Your child will inevitably come across rage inducing frustrations from not being able to build something quite right.  You need to be there to calm them, offer a little hand but most of all judge when it has become too much. If your child is in the midst of an anger fueled meltdown, then it is time to turn it off.  No doubt your offspring will return later with a clearer head and a better idea

5. Teach them how to mod and leave them to it. You will amazed at how quickly they pick up patching and modding skills.

6. Ensure you find a family friendly server, or better still create your own and allow only close friends access. Children are growing up in a world of MMO’s and therefore need to learn how to behave and communicate in an acceptable way.  Destroying your brother’s castle because he killed your sheep is not okay. My son was made to provide new sheep for his sister and she was instructed to build him a new castle, which inadvertently lead to them creating a super kingdom, win!

Above all Minecraft should be fun and assuming you have enough platforms it can be a great rainy day family activity. Problem solving, critical thinking and creativity are all promoted with this one simple game, it fosters a need for cooperation and patience, it fuels imagination and determination, so it basically rocks!  Let your geeklings loose and you may just get a couple of free hours to….I dunno know… write for a geek based website.

Demon Knights #19

0

Exoristos and Madame Xanadu try to convince Vandal Savage to spare Etrigan and join their forces. Meanwhile Cain and his army lay siege to the island of Themyscira. In Hell Jason Blood continues to defy Lucifer whilst the Lord of Hell realises the threat Cain is.

Demon Knights has taken a few twists and turns lately and the time jump of 30 years resulting in both Al Jabr parting ways with the team, due to being a mortal and succumbing to age unlike the rest and introducing Cain has been one of the best.

Vandal Savage’s torture of the immortal Jason Blood for those years before being rescued by Sir Ystin is definitely one of the most brutal things to feature so far and really makes Savage live up to his name.

Vandal Savage is not pleased.
Vandal Savage is not pleased.

This issue though features yet more twists and turns as Savage has the Demon Etrigan at his mercy due to Jason Blood stubbornly refusing to leave Hell and switch places with him resulting in Etrigan’s powers burning out. Savage stating his grudge with the Demon stems from being dragged to Hell despite his being immortal with Savage saying ‘That’s just…..just…..RUDE!’

The siege of Themyscira is told in flashback by Atla and it’s revealed that the Amazons were expecting their enemies to attack at daybreak being unfamiliar with Cain’s affliction so come nightfall their force is fatigued.

The action switches between Greece, Themyscira and Hell but never becomes confused or muddled and the flow of events is easy to follow.

Demon Knights still retains it’s ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ trappings but utilises them well with an army of Amazons, Cain’s afflicted army and the Demon Knight’s themselves all clashing together in one epic battle.

Cain has a plan.
Cain has a plan.

This on it’s own would make for a good issue but there’s plenty more going on.

The love triangle between Xanadu, Etrigan and Jason Blood continues, Sir Ystin’s prophecy comes to fruition leaving the story at a cliff hanger and as always there’s some sly humour like Horsemaiden’s conversations with her horse Brickwedge.

Bernard Cheng handles everything well, with the battle scenes being especially good but the most effective is the aftermath with two panels showing Etrigan changing into Jason Blood as Xanadu speaks to Etrigan and finished her sentence with Blood.

Marcelo Maiolo’s colour palette of muted dusky dark tones and the oranges of Hell and Etrigan’s flame make for a really good contrast too.

Why I love Buffy the Vampire Slayer

0

What makes Buffy the Vampire Slayer so very very good?

Sixteen year old Buffy Summers walked onto my TV screen in 1997, when I myself was a young, impressionable sixteen year old, and I have to say, I fell in love.

Not with a character you understand, but with the whole show. I fell in love with the idea that a girl my age and her nerdy friends could be so brave, even in the face of pure evil. That they could crack jokes and be hilariously sarcastic, even when fighting terrifying monsters or trying to stop the end of the world, over and over again.

Buffy Summers and Willow Rosenberg were girls I could look up to, and strive to be like. I didn’t know very many women back then, so I looked to television for my female role models.

Smart, funny, brave girls weren’t all that common on TV at that time, and I sure as hell didn’t want to be a sexy blonde lifeguard, or a spoiled Beverly Hills brat. (We only had the two or three Irish channels in my house, I didn’t have much choice in TV programmes)

So what made Buffy the Vampire Slayer such a good series? Why, even now, do I watch it over and over again? I suppose because it’s funny, in a really sarcastic way. And because I’d secretly love to be part of a group like the Scooby Gang, who are always there to help each other out, and fight each others corner.

Here are some other things that make Buffy so very very good.

True and Lasting Friendships

When Buffy Summers, Willow Rosenberg, Xander Harris and Rupert Giles are introduced to us in the pilot episode, who could have foreseen the close family-like unit they would become?

Of course the group of friends expanded as the series went on, but these four were the heart of it, with Giles as the father figure, who eventually had to leave for a time to let the kids find their own way.

The extent of how close Buffy, Willow, Xander and Giles are becomes evident in season four, when they go up aganst Adam, a sort of man/monster/machine created secretly by the initiative.

After Adam knocks Buffy about a few times and she ends up having to run away from him, the gang realise that Adam is far too powerful for Buffy to beat by herself, and so the four combine their forces inside of Buffy, with a magic spell. Then she is able to use Giles’ knowledge and Willow’s magic, (and Xander’s something too, I’m sure…?) to paralyze Adam with another spell, and finally defeat him.

They had their ups and downs over the years, but they came through them all by sticking together.

I bet they’ll all be best buddies forever.

Powers

We all want them, but most of us can’t have them. So we like to watch TV programmes and movies about people who do. Buffy’s power, as the slayer, is super strength. She also heals faster than normal people. And apparently she has ‘enhanced abilities’, – which I presume are super strength and healing?

Willow starts dabbling with witchcraft early on, and eventually she becomes a very powerful witch. In a lot of ways she is probably more powerful than even Buffy herself.

Giles knows a little bit of magic too, although it’s probably not a ‘power’, and poor Xander has no powers at all. Just like most of us.

Atonement

Most of the main characters have brutally murdered people at one time or another, but luckily were given the chance to redeem themselves and atone for their sins somewhat. Mostly by killing vampires and demons and helping to save the world.

Angel is the first, vowing to help Buffy, to try in some way to make up for all the people he tortured and murdered over the years until a gypsy curse gave him back his soul.

After Warren killed Willows girlfriend Tara with a stray bullet while trying to shoot the slayer, Willow understandably lost the rag and flayed him alive. And then – of course – she set about ending the world, until Xander stopped her.

She redeemed herself brilliantly too. She used her powers only for good from then on, and she played a huge role in saving the world. Again.

When Spike sacrificed himself to save the world in the last episode, that really tugged at my heartstrings. He was a mean, vicious monster for quite a long time, so he had a fair bit of making up to do, and he did a very good job of it too.

I think this sends a clear message – not that it’s OK to murder people as long as you make up for it, but that doing bad things doesn’t necessarily make you a bad person.

That you can make up for the hurt you’ve caused if you really try.

The Bronze

Is this the coolest club in the world? Probably.

I want to go to there… The Bronze seems to be the only recreational area in Sunnydale. It is some sort of huge open-plan shed/warehouse building, which has couches, a bar, pool tables, a dancefloor, and live bands playing all the time.

The only downside to it really is that a lot of vampires go there to find their dinner. But I suppose everything has its good and bad aspects.

Rupert Giles

What a mystery this man is. So usually perfectly, typically ‘British’, it is a little disturbing when we catch glimpses of the man Giles used to be.

We learn over the course of the series that Buffy’s watcher, in his younger days, called himself ‘Ripper’, dabbled in crime and dark magic, and may even have played rock music.

While Giles is, for the most part calm, collected and reserved, from time to time we do see him open up a can of whoop-ass… and it’s great.

Giles is another example of how people can change. He was a wayward teenager/young adult, but then he took up his watcher duties, and he helped to save the world.

First loves

You never forget your first love, do you. The relationship destined to fail because it’s your first and you don’t have a clue what you’re doing. Usually you’re both too immature to make it work, or you’re too young when it starts so you both grow into different people and realize you’re not right for each other. But you’ll always wonder what might have been…

First we had Buffy and Angel. The story of their love was an amazing one. It was love at first sight. He looked out for her, looked after her when she needed help, and she did the same for him. But their relationship was never going to last, because… Angel was a vampire, so…

Buffy inevitably ended up with a broken heart when he decided he had to leave Sunnydale so Buffy could try and lead a more normal life without him. Noble eh?

Then we had Willow and Oz. Who can forget Oz, your friendly neighbourhood werewolf?

Shortly after Willow and Oz got together, Oz got bitten by his cousin, and started turning into a werewolf. Willow stuck by him, and the gang locked him up for the full moon every month.

The relationship didn’t work out though, because Willow cheated on Oz with Xander, and then a female werewolf came to town, and Oz cheated on Willow with her.

And then he killed the female werewolf, which was pretty bad really.

So he left Sunnydale to find himself. By the time he came back, pretty much in control of his wolfy self, Willow had met Tara and developed feelings for her.

Cordelia Chase was Xanders first love. There was nothing very remarkable about there relationship. They didn’t last because Cordelia caught Xander kissing Willow.

All in all, three pretty typical teenage relationships.

Sacrificial Deaths

There’s nothing like the death of a character you love to really get you emotional.

It’s horrible, someone you have grown to know very well, somebody you identify with, laugh with and cry with, and suddenly, without warning, they’re gone. It’s always worse in books for some reason, but still pretty bad on screen.

Of course I know that real deaths are the worst, just in case you think I have some sort of weird personality disorder. But fake people dying hurts too.

It was awful, and so unexpected when Buffy and Dawn’s mother, Joyce, died of a brain aneurysm. But the sacrificial deaths always choked me up even more. And there were a few. I’ll try not to cry as I discuss a few of them.

Buffy has to fight an evil Angel, who has opened up a vortex to the demon Acathla’s dimension, when suddenly he becomes good again (from a spell Willow has done to give him back his soul) but by then it’s too late.

The portal is open and the only way it can be closed is with Angels blood. So Buffy has to kill him to save the world from certain doom.

It was one of those moments where you stretch your arm out to the TV screen, whispering “nooooooo…”

When the god Glory discovers that Buffy’s sister Dawn is actually ‘The Key’ (used to open portals to other dimensions) she uses Dawn’s blood to… well, open portals to other dimensions. Buffy figures that since Dawn is her sister, they have the same blood, and so she jumps into the portal, sacrificing herself to save Dawn – and the world, of course – in the last episode of the fifth series.

I already mentioned Spikes sacrifice in the last episode, where he sacrifices himself in order to close the hell mouth and save the world. This is the worst one for giving me a lump in my throat. Especially when he and Buffy hold hands and he starts going on fire.

 Like that.

Well that’s pretty much it. My favourite things about Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Drokk! Dredd Sequel Not A Movie

By now we all know that Pete Travis‘ Dredd is a massively underrated movie, and needs a sequel. If you’ve been keeping your eye on the Internet chatter, you’ll also know that due to the under-performance at the box office and on DVD/Blu Ray unfortunately there isn’t going to be one, no matter how much the fans want it. Well… not all hope is lost – there will be a sequel… of sorts.

Dredd & Anderson

IGN have unveiled a teaser poster (below) for 2000 AD’s Judge Dredd “Megazine” teasing a sequel, with Dredd sporting the same armour that Karl Urban wore in the 2012 movie.

The comic will attempt to fill the void following the movie’s conclusion – and answer any questions that viewers had. To be honest I’d really like to see how Dredd & Anderson progressed in the early days of their partnership – I liked the dynamic that Karl Urban & Olivia Thirlby portrayed in the high-stress environment.

If you’ve not seen Dredd, I really urge you go to out and buy it on DVD or Blu Ray – it’s really an underrated classic, and soon to become a cult hit in my opinion. Oh – and just forget that the other abomination of a movie was ever conceived.

The Dredd sequel comicbook should be hitting our shelves and digital devices this September.

Mob Of The Dead Trailer Looks Batshit Insane

It’s a little under a week until the new Uprising DLC lands on the Xbox 360 for Black Ops 2, and Treyarch have hit us with the trailer for the new Zombie adventure “Mob of the Dead“.

Mobofthedead

Flaming zombie dogs, acid traps, gigantic metal-covered zombies… the trailer looks completely insane – exactly what you want from a zombies mode. This almost looks like Left 4 Dead on crack, with mobsters. I’m in!

Check out the suitably ridiculous, yet awesome trailer below:
