New Legend of Zelda Game Announced For 3DS

0

original (1Nintendo have announced today that a new Legend of Zelda game will be released for the 3DS late 2013. As a huge Zelda geek, this is very exciting news, especially since it will be the first original game released for the console.

That’s right folks, whilst the new game, which is yet to have been given a title, is set in the same world as A Link to the Past, it will feature an entirely new storyline and original dungeons.

The game will fully utilize the 3D features as well as involving a new element, where Link will transform into a 2D drawing and be able to walk on walls, something which will be used during puzzles in the game. This feature will also show off the the 3D effects and it really does look pretty swish.

If you have a 3DS, head to the Nintendo eShop right this instant, yes, now, because Nintendo have released a 3D trailer showing off the game play in the upcoming release. And oh my, does it look snazzy. If you head over to the eShop on your console you can download the free video, 59 seconds of pure Zelda bliss. If you don’t have a 3DS, sucks to be you. I was so ridiculously excited when I found out they’d release a 3D trailer that I almost fell up the stairs running to find my 3DS. Did I mention I love Zelda?!

A Link to the Past was originally released for the SNES in 1992 and really is a fabulous game, so utilizing the same world will definitely interest fans of the more retro Zelda games. However, the fact that the new 3DS game will be an original release is rather exciting, as most people were expecting another 3D remake, such as what happened with Ocarina of Time. Not that I’d complain, of course. I’m a Zelda fanatic and have loved each and every game they’ve thrown at us, even those for the abomination that is the Wii.

original (2)Ocarina of Time for the N64 has, and always will be, my favourite game of all time. I’m obsessed. I have a Zelda tattoo from the N64 era on my wrist and the Hyrule Historia, released earlier this year, is without a doubt my favourite piece of geek memorabilia.

The Legend of Zelda series will always be a hugely popular and successful series, for both old and new fans. It’s a great game for younger gamers whilst also pushing adult gamers to the limit. I mean, some of the temples and dungeons in the earlier games really were a bitch!

I seriously cannot wait for the new Legend of Zelda game because from what I’ve seen so far, it already looks magnificent. The game is yet to be given a subtitle but is planned for a release in time for the holiday season. Well, I know what I want for Christmas!

Superman Ponders His Origins In New Trailer

Warner Bros. dropped the latest trailer for Zack Snyder’s Man Of Steel movie in the wee hours of this morning, suitably bathed in the dulcet tones of one Russell Crowe.

Man_Of_Steel

In quite an impressive-looking trailer, it seems that the “I don’t wanna be different” card is being played early on, with an emphasis on Kal-El growing some balls and stepping up to the challenge of Zod later on. Check out the trailer below:

The trailer is definitely looking visually impressive, and it looks like some good casting in terms of Lois Lane (Amy Adams) and Clarke/Superman (Henry Cavil). I’ve never been that sold on the character of Superman though really – he’s always seemed very self-righteous and like an all-American prettyboy, and that’s put me off (I prefer the antiheroes, or the get the job done any way possible heroes myself)… but I think with a suitable injection of humour, some great action and some decent dialogue we could be looking at a winner here.

Though if I were a betting man, I think Iron Man 3 may overshadow Man Of Steel when it comes to box office take… but we’ll see – there’s a lot riding on poor Superman’s shoulders including the possibility of a Justice League movie, and with that in mind, I hope it does well.

Man Of Steel opens 14 June.

Michael Rooker Joins Guardians Of The Galaxy

Michael RookerYes folks, Walking Dead fan favourite Michael Rooker has been cast in James Gunn’s Guardians Of the Galaxy movie as the blue mohawked hunter Yondu, and not Rocket Racoon as previously rumoured.

Fresh from finishing his run in The Walking Dead (with gusto I might add- it was awesome!) Rooker has been given the role of Yondu Udonta, a hunter in a Zatoan tribe on Centauri IV. I’m not familiar with any of the Guardians if I’m honest, but in looking up the character in the Marvel Wiki I’m rather interested in how he’ll be portrayed.

Yondu is a mystic with empathetic connections to lifeforms, most prominantly feral animals (he’s the perfect hunter) and other plant organisms- this helps him track prey, detect the presence of foreign lifeforms or entities and helps to form a symbiotic relationship with nature in general… though most effective on his home planet.

With Guardians Of The Galaxy being our first introduction to the characters, I’m hoping we get to see Yondu’s backstory as it’s a pretty interesting read; but just in case it is included, I’ll give a little SPOILER ALERT and say I’ll post a brief snippet of his Wiki page below the following image.

Yondu
While performing his geophysical survey, Astro came across Yondu, who was in the midst of his ritual of manhood ordeal. Although Yondu tried to avoid contact with the outworlder, the planet-wide attack by the extraterrestrial Badoon brought the two men together. The Badoon massacred the entire settlement and began circling the planet, trying to eradicate the scattered tribes of native Centaurians. With the first evidence of hostilities, Astro took Yondu aboard his survey ship and set out for the nearest known planet in the star system.”
I like the sound of the character, and seeing how Rooker has developed as an actor over the years I’m sure he’s going to do it justice, and he’s worked very will with James Gunn in the past too (Slither was great!) plus he’ll look badass with a massive red mohawk- though judging by the concept art below, I’m not sure that’ll be included… I think that’s Yondu on the far left.

Richard LeParmentier AKA Admiral Mottie – RIP

0

untitledGeek Pride have recently learned through our friends at the 99th Garrison, of the loss of  Richard Le Parmentier, who sadly died last night.

Richard, a seasoned actor and convention regular, had parts in classic films such as: Who Framed Rodger Rabbit, Octopussy and Rollerball , but will be  best known for one of the most iconic scenes in popular movie culture.. the Darth Vader, Force choke.

This station is now the ultimate power in the universe!

He only had a small part as Admiral Motte, but one that is easily up there as one of the best scenes in scifi;  intrinsic to understand the psyche of the over confident Emprire.

a sad day and our thoughts are with his family……. thanks for the great memories Admiral

Snipes Joins Expendables 3, But Will Gibson?

Back fresh from his stint in the big house, and Wesley Snipes has been snapped-up by Sly Stallone for a part in the third of the ridiculous-yet-awesome Expendables series.

blade

Moviehole announced yesterday that Snipes had signed-on for the movie (to be fair, he’d be insane not to), with a confirmation coming by way of Sylvester Stallone’s Twitter account celebrating his career, and addition to the Expendables team. However not long afterwards, Sly removed the tweet for reasons unknown… so maybe the decision isn’t finalised yet.

Sly’s very enthusiastic for big-name action stars for the series, and recently Sly asked his Twitter followers what they thought of Mel Gibson, and the possibility of the Lethal Weapon star joining the crew as the movie’s director. Stallone has been known to namedrop a little when talks about the Expendables movies – in the past he’s said he wants Harrison Ford, Nicholas Cage and Clint Eastwood to join the movies too, but nothing has been confirmed.

The Mel Gibson comment may be something from nothing, but it’s interesting nonetheless – however in my opinion the news about Wesley Snipes is almost a certainty. Snipes would be a great part of the dynamic as he works well with Stallone (he did in Demolition Man anyway), and if Expendables 2 was anything to go by, we need to fill a Jet Li-sized hole… and Snipes has a lot of martial arts experience.

Jamie Foxx’s Electro Is Pretty Creepy

I love comic book movies, and I love how they’re interpreted for the big screen. Movies like Watchmen are so accurate and the attention to detail is astounding, but one of the things I really like is when something is tweaked or changed for the big screen.

Electro from the comics

Well Mark Webb’s sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man is currently shooting, and we’ve just got the first glimpse of Jamie Foxx as the movie’s villain, Electro. If you were expecting a look similar to the comics (above), then you’ll be disappointed. Here’s the makeover that Spidey’s latest nemesis has been given:

Jamie Foxx as Electro A better look at Electro's face

The Daily Mail showed us some of the very first images from the set, showing Foxx’s makeup job, and I like it – the hooded look makes me think of the game [Prototype] a bit, and I wasn’t expecting the blue face either. We can’t tell if this is Electro’s “costume”, or if Foxx is just going between sets and is covering his outfit- then again Electro could be going incognito.

Electro’s real name is Max Dillon, and he gains his electrical manipulation abilities when he’s struck by lightning while working on an electricity pylon. Starting with rather weak capabilities, in the comics Dillon stole electrical equipment from Stark Industries to charge himself.

Now I’m not all that familiar with the character of Electro so I don’t have much sentimental attachment, but I think using the same costume as the comic books wouldn’t have been in keeping with the style of the movie. So looking at these images I’m not all that fussed about the changes that they’ve made to be honest, and he looks pretty badass.

Are you happy with the way Jamie Foxx looks in his new role, or are you irritated that the look of Electro has been changed so much? Let us know by commenting below!

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is set for release on May 2nd 2014.

Game of Thrones – Series 3 – Episode 3 – A Literal Game of Thrones

0

A narrative contains peaks and troughs, great steep rises and tumbling descents, all of which building to one great crescendo before a final denouement. Sometimes, these troughs are well-realised, a tantalising display which keep the main narrative at bay or on pause just long enough to have you baying for its return. Other times, you must endure them. And endurance, patience, was the theme of this episode.

Image from qualitylogoproducts.com

It wasn’t so bad as the intro might lead you to believe but it was a definite ‘slow burn’ episode. This was perfectly displayed by the opening scene, in which Edmure Tully attempts to ignite his father’s funeral boat as it slowly escapes. I found myself, before his first miss, thinking how the archers always have perfect aim in these scenarios and was delighted that Edmure missed, having forgotten that this happened in the book. The mourners must watch him drown arrows until The Blackfish steps in and ignites his brother’s pyre. The point of patience, endurance, is hammered home when Edmure and Robb discuss Edmure’s impatience and inability to follow orders which cost Robb his chance of snaring The Mountain That Rides.

“I’ll tell you who isn’t running out of patience,” Robb snarls, “Tywin Lannister.”

This cuts us rather neatly to Tywin holding a meeting of the Small Council, during which the positioning of chairs is a power struggle. In an amusing scene that required no dialogue, Littlefish, Cersei and Tyrion each choose a position of power, dragging their chairs childishly in order to achieve this. It’s a funny, well-acted scene. The meeting begins with Tywin actually going against Robb’s point, he growing impatient for the return of his son Jaime. Reputation versus Reality is another theme for the episode and that’s set up well here.

We check in again with a number of different characters, each discussing or learning the virtues of endurance… which is probably why Joffrey, the least patient person in Westeros, plays no part. Littlefinger is to be the Lord of Harrenhal and also become Lysa Tully’s husband, thus bringing the Eyrie where Tyrion was nearly executed under Tyrion’s control. His absence leads to Tyrion being named the Master of Coin, a role which makes him realise the Crown is bankrupt and owes millions to House Lannister… and tens of millions to the Iron Bank, mentioned for the first time.

One of the more poignant scenes has Daenerys offering a slave doomed to die bleeding in the sun some water and he refuses it, knowing it would only extend his miserable life. We also have Gilly screaming in the background of the Night’s Watch as Craster hosts the diminished force one more, barely able to control herself as she gives birth… to a boy. And we all know what Craster does with his sons.

Jon Snow is sent to climb The Wall with the Wildlings. Hot Pie leaves the Brotherhood to remain at an inn, leaving Arya to carry on with Thoros and his lot. Missandre leaves Stannis Baratheon, who craves her body as much as her counsel. And Theon is able to escape Roose Bolton’s control, helped by his unnamed ally from the Iron Isles. In a good touch, they show that rape is a weapon used against men as well as women, with Theon barely escaping that fate when recaptured thanks to his ally. But Theon lives on to fight another day.

The main thread about resistance comes from Jaime and Brienne as they are captured by Roose Bolton’s men. Jaime offers Brienne advice on how to survive their capture, saying that it is better not to resist the repeated rapes she will be subjected to. Brienne, obviously, says she will do no such thing and asks if Jaime would just let it happen were he a woman. “I was a woman, I’d make them kill me,” is his reply. “I’m not, thank the Gods.”

The resilience of women is shown throughout the Game of Thrones books and none displays it more than Daenerys, who decides to buy her Unsullied army at the cost of Drogon, her largest and strongest dragon. It has been made clear that the Unsullied are not men and the Mother of Dragons is convinced that using slaves is allowable. She gets 8000 men and Missandei, the translator, as part of the deal. They talk as they walk out, the deal made, and Daenerys asks Missandei if she is okay with being taken to war. “Valar Morghulis,” is her reply. “All men must die. But we are not men.”

Women as viewed by men is also a regular motif, and this is continued with a couple of scenes where Pod, Tyrion’s squire, is bought a number of whores as thanks for saving Tyrion’s life. The following scene, where the women would not take Pod’s money, is not well acted but you get the feeling that is supposed to be the case.

The key scene in the episode comes at the end, during which Bolton’s men come to rape Brienne. The man who is in charge – so far unnamed but I would guess it’s Vargo Hoat – claims her first and has his men soften her up first. Ignoring Jaime’s advice, Brienne fights to the end, injuring some of Bolton’s bannermen and screaming loudly as she refuses to give in. Over these screams, we see the first glint of Jaime’s growth as a character as he intervenes to save her by revealing who she is and what her worth – with her virginity still in tact – would be. This saves Brienne but Jaime pushes it too far, being overly smug and relying on his father’s payment as a way to earn himself more comfort in capture.

‘Vargo’ goes along with this, makes him think that he is going to get some pheasant and a good meal… and then has Jaime held down. He tells Jaime that he has relied on his father’s name for too long, that he is nothing without that and his reputation – an accusation which Brienne threw at him earlier in the episode. Then he ensures Jaime will never forget that lesson with one fell swoop.

As I said, there are often declines in a tale in order to allow for later rises. The whole of this episode slowly builds to the final two seconds, leaving a visceral shock with the viewer and setting us up nicely for episode 4. Let us see how fair the next episode rises.

BioShock Infinite – 10GPPs

0

1266961-bioshock-infinite-1

Before it’s release, we were inundated with advertisements for BioShock Infinite. TV, cinema, magazines – everywhere, and my god, it looked fit. That was it though, it was just all ‘ohmygosh what on earth is this thing of beauty!?’ with little information offered in the adverts, and nobody cared. When it was finally released towards the end of March, we really got to see what all the fuss is about.

I’ve never been a particularly big fan of the BioShock series, but with Infinite, that really didn’t matter. There is very little connection to the previous instalments besides similar gameplay and recurring themes, with an entirely different plot and new location. This might disappoint seasoned BioShockers, but in the eyes of many critics and gamers alike, Infinite far surpasses the earlier games.

Visually, it’s quite simply stunning. The graphics and aesthetics really are something. Set in a rather bizarre floating air-city that is 1912 Columbia, it’s like a surreal steampunk wet-dream.

Ideas inspired by American exceptionalism are well portrayed, and the immense colour and brightness of the city in much of the game in comparison to BioShock’s Rapture really gives this game a great setting to draw you into.

It’s not all something from a Disney palette though, as this seemingly charming city soon transforms into a violent dystopia. In BioShock Infinite, you play as Booker DeWitt, a former Pinkerton agent who has been sent to Columbia to find a young girl. DeWitt finds the girl, Elizabeth, who has been held captive for most of her life. However, the caught in the crossfire between the city’s two warring sides; the nativists striving to keep the city pure and rebels, the Vox Populi. DeWitt and Elizabeth are pursued by both throughout the game by both groups.

With Elizabeth central to the conflict in Columbia, the combat element is rather constant. As Booker, you use a combination of weapons and ‘vigors’, along with Elizabeth’s power to create dimensional tears. The weapons mainly consist of a vast array of guns, along with Booker’s Sky-Hook which is rather useful as the game’s melee weapon. The amount of ammunition varies a great deal with the guns, and you are only able to carry two weapons at any one time. However, ammo is very easy to stumble across by looting corpses, scavenging or purchasing it and guns are also easily found.

Return to Sender in action
Return to Sender in action

Similar to plasmids in earlier games, Booker’s ‘vigors’ give him abilities which are powered by ‘salts’ which like ammo, are also readily available in the game. There are seven in total, ranging from ‘Possession’ which allows Booker to control machines to things like ‘Bucking Bronco’ which throws your target into the air, momentarily levitating them and rendering them helpless. My personal favourite, ‘Return to Sender’, which whilst charged allows you to absorb your enemies bullets and fire them back.

Vigors are gradually unlocked throughout the game and are great fun, making for some interesting combat sequences, providing you don’t forgot to top up your salts. Elizabeth has her uses as well during a fight, opening dimensional tears which can give you access to cover, ammo and health amongst other things. She’ll also occasionally toss you a health kit, ammo or salts if you’re in need during battle, although it does get on my nerves when she randomly tosses you coins all the time. It’s also a big bonus that you don’t have to protect Elizabeth, who fends for herself.

Another fun element of BioShock Infinite is the use of the city’s rollercoaster-like transportation system, the Sky-Lines. Booker uses his Sky-Hook to jump onto the system and travel throughout the city. It’s a bit mental and does send you a little dizzy, but it’s a fun system. I personally love the utilization of the Sky-Hook as the game’s only melee weapon, it’s particularly fun when finishing-off an enemy. I want one. Only £50 for a replica in Game at the moment. Did I mention that my Birthday’s coming up?

249537_scr1_a

As well as the warring factions in Columbia that you come into combat with, there are some really interesting and sometimes mechanically powered enemies. There’s the beast that is the Handyman, a human bonded with a mechanical suit, the ghostly Siren and Motorized Patriots amongst many others.

safe_image
Besides it’s beautiful graphics, awesome quirkiness and fun and constant combat sequences, BioShock Infinite really does have a solid narrative. Themes of racial segregation, nationalism and xenophobia also make for some interesting ideas. Sometimes people underestimate how difficult it can be to put together a really good story for a game, and it’s so often lost behind the action or graphics. Recent games I’ve played have lost me on the lack of a good plot. Tomb Raider‘s was a little weak in my eyes, and don’t get me started on Assassin’s Creed III. After all, when games are so cinematic these days, surely a good narrative is just as important as it looking pretty.

1307743370bioshock-infinite-screen-4

In that sense, this game does not disappoint. The story is actually interesting and gets your attention, especially as you get deeper into the game. You’re interested in the characters, the back story of Columbia and how it came to be that way. Why Booker’s there and what makes Elizabeth so darn special.

I absolutely adored BioShock Infinite, and I’ve not been so absorbed in a game since Skyrim back in 2011. Even then, I don’t think anything has had be so gripped as this one. I loved the pace, the narrative and it really is visually stunning. It completely stands alone as it’s own game, stepping aside from the BioShock series, and that’s not a bad thing. In my eyes, BioShock Infinite really is the game of the year, if not the past couple of years, and it’s not surprising how much success it has enjoyed so far. In reviewing it, I’ve come to realise that I can’t seem to fault it. Seriously guys, grab a copy if you haven’t already because this really is one that you won’t want to miss.

Infinitely awesome.
