Holy Beta, Batman! Infinite Crisis Lands Next Week

Imagine a comicbook world with infinite universes, where each superhero and villain has an alternate version of themselves in each one. This is the concept behind Infinite Crisis – a new DC game and competitor to Marvel‘s team-based Diablo-esque game.

DC Infinite Crisis

Yes – this is Turbine‘s Infinite Crisis… a new MOBA (Multiplayer Online Battle Arena) game loosely-based on the much-loved comics of the same name.

You’ll get the chance to fight with DC classics like The Flash, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Zatanna and more, but also the other-world variants too… which include Nightmare Batman (pictured below), Gaslight Catwoman and Gaslight Joker (also below).

You can be sure that with Turbine’s experience developing Lord of the Rings Online and Dungeons & Dragons Online that this will be a polished and kick-ass game… unfortunately I doubt that my pile-of-crap PC will run the game.

Nightmare Batman Gaslight Joker

The beta opens up next Wednesday (May 8th), so if the idea of teaming-up your favourite DC heroes and villains to fight together sounds appealing, make sure you apply for the beta HERE.

Now I’m going to head off to the nearest building and throw batarangs at people. Ok ok, they’re water bombs…. spoil my fun.

Bioware get Spacemarine license

0

spacemarine-3

It seems, according to BIT BY BIT GAMING BLOG the Spacemarine licence, formally owned by THQ,  has been sold on to bioware, who are developing the previously defunct  40k MMO, Dark Millennium, into a FPS.

Find out  all about this news below:

According to a reliable source within Bioware, I have been told that as of Monday, Bioware is now the proud owner of the Space Marines : 40k Franchise after THQ went under and sold off its IPs due to finical troubles earlier this year. The source, who shall remain unnamed told me about several features that might make themselves a reality in 2014, the projected date of the games release. Originally Warhammer 40k: Dark Millennium was to be a MMORPG based on the Games Workshop table top game, but THQ decided to make it into a 3rd person shooter with online elements.

It seems that Bioware is going to keep with this formula. The only solid feature I could drag out of the source was that the campaign is going to be fluid and will feature a 1st founding chapter of Space Marines.I tried to glean more information from him but all he could tell me was that the main playable chapter for the Space Marines might have very very dark skin (The Salamanders?). He also went on to say Orks, Imperial Guard and The Tao might might an appearance as playable races. This is yet to be set into stone but here’s hoping!

Although the details are scarce, this is a nice pick me up for the fans of THQ’s Space Marine and 40k fans in general. Hopefully as the situation develops a bit more I will be able to bring more information your way. But right now it’ll be a waiting game. It’s just nice to know that a company like Bioware, who’s known to drive a game with great narrative has picked up the project and will hopefully bring it to the next level!

Call of Duty: Ghosts is confirmed as a next gen release in a new teaser trailer

0

call_of_duty_ghosts_teaserNot to be outdone by their biggest rival for space on Santa’s sleigh this Christmas, following Rockstar’s character reveal for GTA V yesterday, Activision have released an official trailer for Call of Duty: Ghosts to seemingly less fanfare. The trailer adds weight to suggestions that have been made since the name first leaked a few months ago that the name ‘Ghosts’ is more likely related to the nameless heroes of international conflict than phantoms of the supernatural variety.

Call of Duty: Ghosts was unwittingly confirmed by online supermarket Tesco last week in a listing that went viral before it was promptly taken down however whilst Tesco were listing the game as a current gen release for the PS3 and Xbox 360, the new trailer promises more details to come at the impending next gen XboxReveal event on May 21st. Fear not though as it is most likely that the game will be released on both current gen and next gen platforms at around the same time.

The game is being developed by Activision studio Infinity Ward, most well known for the Modern Warfare Call of Duty titles and is expected to be released this November. Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think:

Far Cry 3

To  celebrate this week’s release of Far Cry: Blood Dragon on Xbox Live, Ubisoft have sneakily also dropped the price for the full Games on Demand version of Far Cry 3 to just £14.99 or 1760 MSP for an undisclosed limited time only.

Why is the pretty ones who are always crazy?
Why is it always the pretty ones who are crazy?

If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to watch your mates get killed before being chased around a remote tropical island by sharks and mentalists then this is the game for you. Luckily our hero Jason has local tribesman on hand who are happy to train him in the ways of the forest through a series of upgrades and challenges.

Couple those with some incredible cinematics, intense vehicle action and online co-op missions and you have a game that should be enough to keep even the most hardened of players going for a few weeks.

Our own Matt Walklate reviewed Far Cry 3 and gave it a solid 8 GPP calling it a “fantastic game that will give you plenty of entertainment for hours to come” so if this one managed to pass you by in the pre-Christmas chaos of last year then there has never been a better time to get involved.

Iron Man 3: The Official Game – 8 GPPs

With Tony Stark‘s latest action-packed adventure now in theatres, and receiving some decent reviews (one of them mine), we now turn to the obligatory movie tie-in game of the same name. Thankfully with an IP like Iron Man there are so many avenues of approach when it comes to a game that it can be easy to get it right, but just as easy to get wrong.

Iron Man 3: The Official Game

Gameloft are the company bringing Marvel‘s “genius billionaire playboy philanthropist” to our handheld devices, and I’m happy to say they’ve done a decent job. Iron Man 3: The Official Game was released the same day the movie hit the cinemas here in the UK (April 25th), and has quickly been climbing the ranks of the Google Play Store and Apple App Store as though they were given a dose of Extremis.

The game is set after the events of the movie (no, you won’t find any spoilers here, so feel free to read on), where Tony has once again taken up his role as a peacekeeper, dealing with terrorist threats and supervillains all over the world. The link to the movie is somewhat tenuous, in that every now and again you’ll come up against some bad guys that are infused with Extremis. So if I’m honest, Gameloft could’ve just called this “Iron Man: The Official Game”, and no-one would bat an eyelid. But in all honesty, it doesn’t really matter – you’ll have fun regardless.

So what with the storyline not being too complex, it boils down to the gameplay to make sure that Mr. Stark is kept in business, which I’m happy to say lives up to my expectations – admittedly I wasn’t expecting much at all, but I was pleasantly surprised.

“I'm pleased to announce the arrival of your bouncing, badass, baby brother.”
“I’m pleased to announce the arrival of your bouncing, badass, baby brother.”

When you first load the game up, you’ll be impressed by the looks of the game – you’re greeted by the Mk 42 Iron Man suit initially, and it looks gorgeous – perfectly recreated from the movie, and graphically stunning.

Even the environments in the game are surprisingly detailed – of course when you’re flying at high speeds you’re not paying as much attention, but it’s definitely worth taking in when you can.

I was playing on my Google Nexus 4, and it handled the graphical requirement very well – although if I’m honest my phone did heat up quite a bit while playing, though that’s the same for most games.

The menu system is suitably Jarvis-like, being mostly techie-blue with circular buttons or the cut-rectangles… the mission text and tutorials are all in text form, so there’s no Paul Bettany for us unfortunately. There are some small voice samples, but they’re soundalikes – these are few & far between though. To be fair if they’d incorporated voices, the installer would be huge, and the game is already a 795mb install.

All the music in the game sounds like it could be ripped directly from the soundtrack of the movie – in most cases, it may well be! You get the very heroic-sounding music over the menus, and all the in-game music fits the atmosphere and tension very well.

The sound effects aren’t bad – the menu selection noise is a bit tinny, and sounds like a squeak sometimes, but it didn’t bother me – the in-game sounds are all in-keeping with the game’s general polished aesthetic.

Gameplay is an area where this game shines though. The easiest way to describe it is to say it’s a successful marriage of Temple Run and Skylanders: Cloud Patrol – though it actually reminded me of an older classic from my Atari ST days: Space Harrier. (If you haven’t played it, find an emulator and check it out – it’s awesome!)

Movement around the screen is controlled via your device’s accelerometer, although you can change this to swiping on the screen instead, and blasting enemies with repulsors can be done either by tapping the enemy in question, or swiping from one enemy to another to build combo attacks. There’s also a dedicated special move button, which discharges Iron Man’s Unibeam attack from his Arc reactor on his chest.

Swiping to attack instead of tapping results in combos
Swiping to attack instead of tapping results in combos

Using the device’s movement is easy enough, however swiping to move is a pain when you have to move as well as tap/swipe enemies to shoot – so I’d recommend keeping the movement side of things set to the accelerometer setting.

The aim of the game is to fly as far as possible without getting taken out (which isn’t always as easy as it sounds), but also to collect red orbs which act as one of the two currencies in the game, the other being the alien isotope ISO-8. You also gain these along with experience by defeating enemies and drones, as well as with picking up power ups. The core gameplay can be a little repetitive, and the initial gameplay environment is a little samey – however there are more environments & enemies, you just have to progress further.

You can also earn trophies which give you an orb, ISO-8 or experience payout once you achieve them – for example there are trophies for flying certain distances, defeating enemies like Crimson Dynamo, and getting 10 10-hit combos. These trophies help to extend the replay value of the game, as you can share them on facebook – you’re also part of a leaderboard of other game players, so you can strive to increase your ranking as much as possible there too.

Leaderboard Trophies Mission

What’s the point of earning all these orbs you ask? Well… this wouldn’t be Iron Man without a plethora of suits to fiddle with, and here you can get up to 18 of those bad boys. These include some of the weird and wonderful suits from Iron Man 3 like the Heartbreaker suit, Igor and the awesome Iron Patriot. (You can get War Machine too… and to quote Colonel Rhodes on Iron Patriot; “It tested well with focus groups, okay?”)

Each set of armour has a 3 sets of upgrades; HP, Weapon & Special – each with 3 tiers of upgrade in each class. Getting the upgrades is quick enough, but unlocking new armour takes a long time (unless you’re playing constantly). An upgrade will typically cost between 150-350 red orbs, but to build a new suit starts at 7,000 orbs, and goes up to 12,000 in the next tier – you’ll practically need a Tony Stark-esque income of orbs to get them all.

You can supplement your orb income by purchasing ISO-8 if you don’t want to have to earn it, however this doesn’t come cheap. Starting at £1.49 for 150 ISO-8, it goes up in steady increments to a maximum of a hefty £69.99 for 15,000.

Each set of armour gives different benefits
Each set of armour gives different benefits

Aside from looking rather spiffy, the different sets of armour serve several purposes – each one has a different special attack… the later suits obviously more powerful than their respective predecessors. Each progressive tier of suit also allows for score multipliers to help you earn orbs and ISO-8 that bit quicker.

All-in-all, Iron Man 3: The Official Game is exceedingly-well executed, with great eye-candy and good gameplay along with lots of replay value, although it can be a bit repetitive. For the great price of FREE on both Android & iOS, I can heartily recommend you pick this up and have fun with it.

It’ll reward consistent players quickly, and if you’re not a regular player you’ll still have fun with it and more than likely get hooked on acquiring new suits as fast as possible. The only thing you’ll probably have an issue with is how quickly it’ll deplete your mobile device’s battery.

The Movement #1 – 9 GPPs

0

The teaser images for The Movement and its sister title, Green Team: Teen Trillionaires, worried me slightly. With their emphasis on the 99%/1% angle, I was concerned that they’d jumped on the Occupy bandwagon long after it had left, and that the comics would end up faceplanting the road and feeling like idiots. So it is with a heart full of joy and relief that I realised that The Movement has both its face and dignity intact.

DC-Comic-The-Movement - Copy

The Movement centres on a group of superpowered teenagers intent on taking back a small corner of their town as their own anarchic domain, and delivering swift punishment to those who abuse their power. In fact, the more you read, the more you see that the true basis for The Movement is not Occupy, but Anonymous.  The Movement  has prostitutes, drugs, violence and a pair of police officers crossing a pretty major line in their treatment of a young street girl- and that’s just the first page. Following this, the eponymous movement -known in-universe as Channel M- reveals that they absolutely will not stand for this shit, and deals out swift punishment by recording the incident and leaking it to the press. And if you’re still not quite getting the reference, I’ll just point out that not only is Channel M described as a “controversial [hacker] group of anonymous activists”… they also get a lot of random people to wear the same distinctive mask:

anonimeanthemovement - Copy

The Movement acknowledges corruption in the organisations we are meant to trust, without falling into wild-eyed assertions that they’re all out to get us. The end result is very politically mature for a comic that on the surface is about a bunch of superpowered young people sticking it to the man.

The cast is made up mostly of brand-new characters -with the exception of Secret Six extra Tremor, and recent Batgirl antagonist Katharsis- and there’s a lot of potential for the newbies to shine.  My favourite so far has to be Virtue, with the power to ride emotions, and an uncompromising approach to dealing with trespassers.   This issue is pretty action-packed, so we don’t see much of their personalities, other than the fact that they will not tolerate corruption, and they would very much like it if the police would kindly get the fuck out of their territory, please.

Since Wall Street is not longer Occupied, SOPA and PIPA were shot down pretty swiftly, and nobody has started a riot in a British city for almost two years (gold star, guys!) a comic about the angry proletarian runs the risk of being considered too little, too late.  To Simone’s credit, however, it doesn’t depend on an extensive knowledge of current events to work as a concept, which gives it a strong chance of surviving the test of time in the same way that classics like V for Vendetta have.
We are faceless. We are limitless. We see all. And we do not forgive. Who defends the powerless against the GREEDY and the CORRUPT? Who protects the homeless and poverty-stricken from those who would PREY upon them in the DARK OF NIGHT? When those who are sworn to protect us abuse their power, when toxic government calls down super-human lackeys to force order upon the populace…finally, there is a force, a citizen’s army, to push order BACK. Let those who abuse the system know this as well: We have our OWN super humans now. They are not afraid of your badges or Leagues. And they will not be SILENCED. We are your neighbors. We are your co-workers. And we are your children.
Black Milk Clothing

Geek girls of the world! Want to express who you are and what you love through what you wear? Tired of the drab selection of clothing available? Sick of “customing” (read: ripping apart) mens tshirts to try and find something that appeals to your geeky nature but isn’t pink and tacky, or designed for the H&M and Topshop masses? Well then today is your lucky day!

Australian designer James Lillis has readdressed the gap in the market with his range of leggings, dresses and swimwear. You may have noticed a growing trend recently of pictures of hot girls in geeky clothing being shared all around the internet and wished you could own something like that. I was much the same. I first fell in love with a lovely little R2D2 dress which for months I saw floating around the internet and couldn’t track down for the life of me. After a bit of a licencing hiccup, which has since been resolved, the dress came back on sale! Imagine my joy when I could finally wear my coveted Artoo 1.0.

Black Milk Clothing
Black Milk Clothing

Since the popularity of this and a similar C3PO dress was so evident, Black Milk Clothing have expanded their Star Wars universe to include more dresses, leggings and swimsuits in all manner of designs: http://blackmilkclothing.com/collections/star-wars, but they didn’t stop there! Oh no. Fans of LotR can also rejoice. You can find an extensive and ever increasing collection of Middle Earth madness right here: http://blackmilkclothing.com/collections/middle-earth and there are lots of sneaky little nods to the nerd world (Tardis dress anyone?) throughout the vast realms of their wonderful catalogue of nylon.

Oh, and as if this wasn’t enough, James Lillis is a conscientious employer. This might not mean a great deal to everybody, but especially considering recent tragic events surrounding high street fashion, it certainly means something to me. Everyone who works for the company is based in Australia, every piece is handmade by happy little workers earning a proper wage and their customer service is beyond fault.

I’ve heard girls complain about the cost of BM Clothing, and no, it doesn’t come cheap. A dress will set you back about 110 AUD… roughly 75 quid… but when you take into account the work that goes into it and the incredible statement you can make when you rock out in town wearing a designer piece that nobody else has even dreamed of owning, it’s worth every last penny. As such there’s a loyal and passionate community surrounding this fashion label which you wouldn’t find anywhere else, fans of the label are affectionately known as Sharkies, and 9 pieces later, I am proud to count myself as one of them.

Play Diary; Don’t Starve, Part 1

starve1

This being the account of my adventures within the strange, gothic world of Don’t Starve; an excellent indie survival simulation, with elements of Minecraft, FTL and Farm Simulator 2012.

My name is Wilson Percival Higgsbury, and I am a Gentleman Scientist. I also don’t look too good, and need some food. Or so I’ve been informed by the mysterious, suited gentleman that has just appeared and disappeared in a cloud of smoke. How dare he make inferences on my thin build and pale skin? It’s all the rage nowadays; these Otherworldly Dimension types clearly have no eye for fashion.

Ah yes, that reminds me; this otherworld dimension. Guess I’m trapped, then. Not to worry, Wilson the Gentleman Scientist is more resourceful than MacGyver and Bear Grylls at some sort of resourceful-ness based contest. Possibly with cake. Onwards!!

 starve3

Day 1

I appear to be in some form of plain; there are plenty of trees around, as well as grass and flowers. I idly run around picking them up, before realising I’m wasting precious time. I need to find some food! I continue exploring and come across something orange in the ground. Carrots! What a great start. I resolve to create a roast dinner tonight with what I’ve found. So next on the shopping list; meat! There are plenty of birds around; however I can’t catch a bird. I’m a scholar, not a feline. I continue onwards. I find a couple of berry bushes I quickly harvest. Perhaps one can make a fruit pudding for afters! Finally, I stumble on a grassy field, dotted with rabbit holes. Which means rabbits. Told you; SCIENTIST. Cue spending 10 minutes running around trying to catch a rabbit with my bare hands. I really don’t think I’ve thought this through.

All of a sudden, the sky turns an ominous orange. That reminds me! I should probably make a fire, I completely forgot about night!  Temporarily abandoning my Glorious Quest to Catch A Bunny Rabbit; I use my scientific knowledge (as well as the toolbar) and discov..ahem…*remember* that I can create an axe to chop down some of these trees. Luckily, I’m a hoarder by nature, and having already found a few twigs from saplings and a scrap of flint; I piece together a rudimentary axe. Night is drawing in, however, and I only have time to harvest the bare minimum of wood to make a fire. I use some of my spare grass shoots as tinder and just in time we get up and running. I AM THE GOD OF FIRE! PRAISE ME, PUNY MOR….what was that? I’m sure I just heard a noise outside the radius of firelight….

 starve5

Speaking of which, it’s not very substantial, is it? No, the fire’s already dying out! This is bad, I’ve already used all my wood and I can’t see any more trees to chop within the firelight’s meagre radius. I desperately throw a couple of pine cones I found onto the fire; anxiously watching the fire consumes the soul of the tree inside. I can still hear the terrifying sounds out in the dark. They’re waiting from me. Frantically, I throw some grass on there, but it barely makes a difference. Looking back, I probably should have held on to those flowers, too. “I haven’t even eaten yet!” I realise, as the last flame slowly dies out. As the monsters close in around me; everything is pitch black. I run desperately trying to find anything that would help but it’s futile. What a waste, I think. I’ve enough carrots and berries to feed a vegan for life, but my Quest For Bunny Rabbits has been my downfall at last.

 starve6

Day 1 (Again)

Aah! What’s this? I’m back! Mysterious suited man, you’re here again, too? Are you my creator? WAIT! No time to ponder why God would bring me back here, famished and “ill-looking”, instead of back in my moustache and pipe-decorated laboratory, I have work to do. You caught Wilson out last time, evil monsters of the night; you shall not do so again!

Ok, twigs from saplings, grass for tinder, flint, I spend 10 minutes just looking for flint. Why is it so hard to find all of a sudden? WHERE’S ALL THE BLOODY FL…. Ah, found some. Right, good, axe made, let’s go caveman style on these trees. Chopping away, I harvest so much wood my axe breaks. Ah well, at least I have plenty. Ok, need some food before it gets dark. Carrots, got some of them, not many berries thou…wait, what’s this? Ooh, a bee hive! Honey Glazed Carrots, now THERE’s a dish fit for a gentleman. Now, let’s just stick my hand in here….AAAAH, BEES! GIANT MUTATED DEMON BEES!! I run in the opposite direction as fast as my gangling legs will carry me, but it’s too little too late. With no axe to defend myself, and a disproportionately large head to aim for, the demon bees quickly overcome me. And I didn’t even get any honey. Speaking of which, I haven’t even eaten at all, yet! This game is supposed to be called Don’t Starve; they should’ve called it Everything Wants to Eat You; Literally Everything.

 starve7

Day 1 (Yet Again)

Suited man, twigs, flint, AXE! Chop, wood, pine cone, berries, carrots, dodge the pigmen, make a…wait a minute. I seem to have accidentally stumbled into a village of pig people! Look at their funny little houses and everything, they seem far too tall and thin to accommodate such beasts, but who am I to question the architectural preferences of Pig People. More importantly, maybe this is a safe place! I go to greet one, taking care to put away my axe, but I can barely get any intelligible words out of any of them, and the ones I do get are extremely intimidating. Time to back away, I think. I don’t go far, however. I’ve noticed the large farm they have in the town centre of Piggleton (I suppose you have to start naming things sooner or later), and it’s piqued my curiosity. I choose a location slightly north of Piggleton with a sea view, and set up camp, dreaming of bacon…I mean vegetables. With the fire roaring almost out of control, that night I settle down as close as I can to it, and eat my roasted carrots, perusing my toolbar and thinking on what to do tomorrow. As night comes in, I can hear the monster’s wails, but for once I’m happy and content, and patiently wait until morning.

What will happen next in this strange new world? Will our dashing academic be able to make peace with Piggleton? What will he do now he’s survived his first night? What other surprises await him in this mysterious land? Find out in Volume II of the Diary of Wilson P. Higgsbury, Gentleman Scientist!

Don’t Starve is out now for PC on Steam, £11.99.

Michael, Franklin, and Trevor: New GTA V Trailers and Character Reveal

0

gtavmichaelfranklintrevorpng-acb321_800w

If you’re wondering why the Internet may have temporarily melted for a brief period this afternoon then that’s because Rockstar just dropped three new trailers and character reveals for Grand Theft Auto V.

Set for release on September 17th, the trailers feature the stories of three protagonists. Michael is a wealthy and middle aged ex-con, explaining his boredom with a white collar lifestyle to his shrink. Franklin is a gang banger out to prove himself, obviously inspired by San Andreas’ C.J., and Trevor is some good old trailer park trash just living and humiliating himself one day at a time.

At Geek Pride we couldn’t be more excited about GTA V, after all any game with the potential to overshadow two next-gen console launches is worthy of anybody’s attention, and watching these trailers today has only made me want GTA V more.

You can check out the three trailers below:

Michael

Franklin

Trevor

Grand Theft Auto V will be released for PS3 and Xbox 360 on 17th September 2013. No next-gen or PC releases have yet been confirmed.
