Its no secret that I’ve been salivating over footage and images of Pacific Rim since it’s announcement… and I rubbed my hands together with glee when I heard there’d be a game tie-in released alongside the movie. Unfortunately the initial impressions haven’t met my lofty expectations.
When I initially saw this trailer, I thought it was a mobile game… and I was psyched. Having it on iOS or Android would be amazing, and graphically at least it looked ok. However upon realising this will be an Xbox Live, PSN and PC title… now the game is looking like a rushed crappy movie tie-in title.
Check it out for yourselves:
Have I been overly harsh in my initial assessment of the game just based on this brief trailer? To me the game doesn’t look of the right quality to be an Xbox 360 or PS3 title… I even made sure to re-watch the trailer in 720p, but no, it still looks shabby to me.
The Pacific Rim game is developed by Japanese company Yuke’s Co LTD (“Who” I hear you say… well they developed the Real Steel game for PS3 & Xbox 360 too. See… now you understand), and will be available this summer once the movie drops.
With the announcement of Kingdom Hearts 3 at E3, there has been a lot of hype and speculation in regards to what character content will be included within the next instalment. The creative team and developers behind Kingdom Hearts 3 are currently working on the anticipated follow-up from Kingdom Hearts 2, where the game will feature a more mature Sora on new adventures with the much loved trio Mickey, Donald and Goofy; and in a recent interview with Finaland.com at Japan Expo, it has been hinted he will travel to all new worlds within the Kingdom Heart franchise.
The creator behind Kingdom Hearts, Tetsuya Nomura, has given some insight into the possibility of Disney’s recent acquisitions of both Marvel and Stars Wars being present within Sora’s adventures.
It seems like despite a keen interest from the game’s creator, there are restrictions in place by Disney (especially when it comes to their in-house content).
”Of course it would be great if we could add (the Marvel and Star Wars) licenses as well,” said Nomura when at Japan Expo in Paris last week. “But there are lots of rules and restrictions by Disney so we can’t actually put everything people want, so it’s a quite difficult decision but we’re going prepare some surprises for you so, just wait for the information.”
The 24 Hours of LeMons beater-car racing series has had quite a few theme-based cars throughout the years. Whether it be an ‘Animal House’ Deathmobile, the ‘A-Team’ van or even the Spirit of St. Louis, if it was a car….and not a plane. But this week, the incredible has happened, the brilliant even, this week someone had the sheer genius of re-creating ‘The Homer’!
The Homer in all it’s glory
For those who don’t know, in the early years of The Simpsons (Season 2, Episode 15, don’t you judge me for knowing that!), Homer found his long-lost brother, Herb Powell who at the time owned a car company in Detroit. Well Herb asks Homer to design a car for him, a car that real Americans would like…..and well, it’s Homer, it was hideous and stupid and ended up bankrupting Herb.
But despite that Kris Linquist, a member of Porcubimmer Racing decided it would be a good idea. They have made it just like the show, as Homer said ‘All my life I’ve searched for a car that feels a certain way, powerful like a gorilla, yet soft and yielding like a nerf ball, now at last, I have found it.’
Not sure which is more disturbing, the car or Marge
This car has a bowling ball hood ornament, a bubble-top back seat, a roof-mounted air horn that plays ‘La Cucaracha’, it really is too hideous for words, but so brilliant at the same time. I hate motor racing, but even I may tune in to this just to see ‘The Homer’ drive away.
This isn’t news for the faint-hearted. An artist from Sheffield has mistakenly used around £20,000 worth of comics on a sculpture. (Altogether now: ‘NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!”)
Andrew Vickers created his Paperboy sculpture using comics that he found in a skip, unknowing that he was about to use rare comics including a first edition of The Avengers as papier-mâché.
The discovery was made by Steve Eyre, owner of World of Superheroes in Sheffield upon a visit to an exhibition at the S1 Artspace also in Sheffield. Mr Eyre spotted the cover of the first edition of The Avengers on the statue’s inside right leg before noticing that there were also other valuable comics covering the art piece.
Mr Eyre is reported as saying “I’ve got a copy of [The Avengers], which was published in 1963, worth over £10,000. Then I started looking and there are six comics on this that together would be worth, even in the edition you can see, £20,000.”
The artist, Andrew Vickers, was surprised but didn’t quite share the pain that I’m sure many comic fans may feel upon this news. “To be honest I’m shocked but money has not got such a value to me. I think it is funny. I really love the idea of me creating something out of such expensive things that’s worth less. I think it’s brilliant.”
The exhibition called ‘Heroes’, which was organised by World of Superheroes, is in the S1 Artspace until the 11th July. So, go quickly if you want to mourn the loss of such sought after comics but I think I’ll just shed a few tears in private.
As a female gamer, I have heard it all from Gamer guys when it comes to insults. Today I’m here to clear a few things up.
No I will not go make you a sandwich. I’m old enough to be your mother, you go make ME a sandwich.
No I will not send you pictures of my nude body. I have self respect.
Yes I am a girl and yes you just got your ass kicked by me.
Now there are some girls out there who have ruined our image on live games online. I have had to kick girls out of clans for using their practice time to “sexy chat” with guys and for sending nudes or inappropriate behavior at expos.
If you are a gamer born in the 70’s or 80’s like me, you’ve likely been playing video games since you were old enough to hold a controller…. ATARI SHOUT OUT!!!
What I find to be the most difficult thing about being a female gamer, is that I ave been a sponsored player for years and have always played fairly and with just as much passion and skill as my male teammates. Do I get as much respect as them? Not even close. During photo ops, I’m stuck off to the side. During intros, I’m last to be called. When I defeat a male player, he can’t just shake my hand and say, “good game” as I always do.
Gamer girls are not a figment of the imagination but the light cast on us is disgusting. We are just as likely to be experts at playing a game as any male gamer. We do not put on makeup and dress up to play a game thinking that you can see us. Likely we are sitting in our rooms, just like you, in our pajamas or “lazy clothes,” just like you. And we most certainly are not thinking, “Oh good a guy who plays. I hope he sends a picture of his junk to me.”
We just want to play the games as much as any male gamer does. Women are cast in such a light in the gaming world that girls actually do obscene photo shoots for gaming magazines just to entertain the males. I could go the rest of my life without seeing another fake gamer girl in lingerie holding a controller with bedroom eyes. That is not a gamer girl. That is entertainment for small minds.
A real gamer girl doesn’t care if you think she’s hot or not. She cares about gaming. She does not care how good you are at the game, just play already and stop asking about sandwiches. Have some respect and remember that most of us are old enough to remember Pong.
What you get to miss out on when you are dick to girls when gaming, is that most of us are decent team players and you could lose a great asset to your team. Entire clans are out there of nothing but female gamers. Talk crap to us about our gender is low, at least talk crap about crappy calls or the same mistakes you make. We all are online for the same reason, to play a game and kick some ass. Let’s just all get along and stop with the stereotypes.
I could get into the stereotypes that are out there about gamers in general, but that would get us no where. Now go forth and set a good example for the next generation of gamers.
A costume designer, working on the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special, has let slip that John Hurt’s Doctor is a “dark” version of him and the one we didn’t see, regenerating between Paul McGann and Christopher Eccleston; will this screw up the number system and would that make him the ninth Doctor, instead of Eccleston? Or could it also mean that the next regeneration will be his last, as he only has 12 regenerations? I personally think that the answers to both of these will just be swept under the carpet.
Also, Jenna Coleman suggested that there will only be three Doctors in the special; Matt Smith, David Tennant and John Hurt, who will all be playing against each other.
I don’t think these leaks have spoiled too much; there are still other questions, yet to be answered. I heard a good while back, that The Doctor’s real name will also be revealed in the special. Some will say that it was already revealed years ago, in a Tom Baker Episode, as “Theta Sigma,” but others will say that this was actually just a nickname; so we’ve still got that to look forward to. Although that’s a bit like taking off the helmet of Bobba Fett or Judge Dredd, but that’s been done, so the Doctor’s name will probably not stay a mystery either.
Here’s the full story from the Radio Times Magazine:
Ever since John Hurt’s introduction as “the Doctor” earlier this year, fans have been asking: Doctor who? Well, it appears that the answer has been slipped.
During yesterday’s royal visit to Cardiff, costume designer Howard Burden disclosed to the visitors that Hurt, briefly seen at the end of series finale The Name Of The Doctor, will play a “dark” version of the Time Lord, before going on to reveal… “There was a gap between Paul McGann playing the Doctor and Christopher Eccleston, when we didn’t see a regeneration, and John Hurt will fit into that gap. He is a past Doctor, not a future Doctor.”
The comments, picked up by The Telegraph, appear to confirm fan speculation of Hurt playing some sort of forgotten incarnation between the eighth and ninth ever since the actor was snapped on set wearing the latter’s leather jacket over Paul McGann’s Victorian-style waistcoat.
Also in a revelatory mood during Prince Charles and the Dutchess Of Cornwall’s visit was Jenna Coleman, who seemed to suggest that the only three Doctors to appear in the special will be Matt Smith, David Tennant and Hurt. She said: “We had three different Doctors in [the TARDIS]… John Hurt, David Tennant was back and Matt. Three different Doctors playing against each other.”
The Guardians blow off some steam after their narrow escape from the prison planet only for things to go somewhat awry.
Guardians of the Galaxy continues to be one of those frustrating cases of something that’s good but could be so much better. This issue finds the team partying hard after the frantic escape last issue and is a rare example of a team just ‘hanging out’ for want of a better term and it works because of the ragtag nature of The Guardians.
The idea of Drax, Rocket, Peter Quill, Gamora ,Groot and Tony Stark kicking back in the equivalent of the Star Wars Cantina is a nice touch and something that wouldn’t work with any other team in comics pretty much.
That they are cheering Groot ,their saviours name, further cements the idea that this is a team made up of characters that actually like each other which is one of this titles biggest qualities. There’s never a sense that they are together purely to save the universe from nefarious plots and predacious aliens, that seems like a happy side effect to them being friends, especially in the case of Groot and Rocket who seem to have the most bizarre bromance going on in comics.
Tony Stark though still seems to be the only character here that you actually know. Whilst Guardians of the Galaxy has a pretty big fanbase which undoubtedly has been following their adventures for some time for readers new to the title it’s still a bit unclear as to who these characters are.
The Guardians let off some steam.
This problem is amplified this issue by events involving Tony Stark, who really does earn the ‘that guy really needs a slap’ award it has to be said and Gamora, undoubtedly the best character in this title, seems to get shortchanged too.
Gamora is often referred to as ‘The Deadliest Woman in the Universe’ and whilst there’s been little in the way of explanation for that so far, she has definitely proved her merits as a fierce and intelligent member of the team and an accomplished warrior. That Gamora and Stark’s flirtation ends with the seemingly inevitable conclusion despite Gamora’s statement of ‘You’re going to have to do better out here’ after Stark makes a pass at her seems to happen far too easily.
A further development robs the character of her strength and having to be saved by the ‘boys’, seems to smack of gender tropes re-asserting themselves even if unintentionally.
In a title with 5 characters besides Stark little time has been spent on any of them so far and to have a considerable amount of this issue spent on Stark makes this seem more like ‘Tony Stark and friends’ and makes you wonder who is the guest star here?
Stark calls home.
What saves this title though is the banter between the team members and the action, in the form of a bar brawl this issue, its chaotic and does feed into the idea that carnage seems to follow the team wherever they go and the consistently good art.
Sara Picelli does a good job of capturing the chaotic nature of the bar, with some nice panels of background action giving the place a real sense of life and the contrast between the crowded scenes in the bar and Gamora’s situation outside is a well used device. The only thing that seems problematic is Rocket’s appearance, Mike Mignola’s work on the original limited series set the bar for that character way back in the mid 80’s and nothing since has matched it.
There has been talks about a spin-off Deadpool movie for quite some time, since the release of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which to be fair left a lot of fans disappointed (myself included). It’s been revealed in a recent interview Ryan Reynold’s did with Total Film Magazine that he is still onboard to star as Wade Wilson; however that being said you can see within his interview he does come across as a little bit frustrated with the whole situation.
”That movie is alive and kicking, and then it’s dead as a doornail. Then it’s alive and kicking and then it’s dead… it’s like the worst relationship I’ve ever had! The character knows he’s a comic-book character, he knows he’s in a film, he knows who the executives are at the studio making the movie. In the current iteration of the script, Deadpool is aware of the Wolverine movie. He doesn’t say anything disparaging about it but he does at one point play with the Deadpool action figure with some curiosity.”
Now we all know a script is in existence and it’s done by the incredible duo that brought us Zombieland, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick; and we even have Tim Miller down as director! So why has it taken them so long to even get this movie in motion? Here is hoping with this leak into the media, Reese, Wernick and Miller will shed some new light on the prospects of there being a Deadpool movie.
Geek Pride official and proud sponsor is pleased to announce that Melksham Comic Con is back! The indie convention is run by passionate fan and comic store owner Hayley Spencer, in a small town in the heart of Wiltshire,.
Thanks to the help of numerous supporters Melksham Comic Con 2013 is going to be even bigger and whilst it might not have the sprawling scope of London MCM or San Diego Comic Con it doesn’t have their eye watering cost either. Guests include Kieron Gillen, Si Spurrier, Simon Furman and more besides
It’s that time of the year when the nights are longer, your basement dwelling friends come out of the woodwork and sales of e45 go through the roof. Summer is here in all its blistering glory and despite that fact that many a facebook update is about how hot it is, despite the fact that we here in England had almost 6 months of winter in 2012-2013, most of us will have a powerful urge to do sports. So what will it be? The rowdiness of football? The majesty of Tennis? The middleclassness of polo?
Yeah, I mean those are good… but you could always just mount your friends.
This utterly baffling indie game sensation is taking the Xbox Live users by storm, with a title more self explanatory than Minecraft. The aim of Mount Your Friends is simple: You start off with a goat, and you climb said goat. Then you or your friend (preferably your friend… it’s kind of weird on your own) climbs the goat and your character. Each turn is timed; you lose if you aren’t highest by the time your turn ends.
good, wholesome, family fun.
“And?” I hear you sneer, well you control your characters QWOP style; individual limbs at a time, using ragdoll physics for maximum hilarity. In addition to the snort-inducing generated names and the shocked expression of each character’s face and you have a good few days worth of laughing yourself into a coma. This is the game you can bring out at parties, gatherings or any time you and a friend have a few minutes to spare.
And did I mention the dick physics? Yeah. There’s dick physics. It has to be seen to be truly appreciated but there is nothing quite like straining to get your avatar up a pile of jock strapped ragdolls while betwixt your legs a veritable meatspin is making every penis joke you’ve ever made pale in comparison.
jiggle jiggle.
The only gripe I have is an inability to customise characters, as variations do appear on the menu screen, but for 80mp (also available on steam) who am I to complain? One more thing: if you, as a cosplayer, feel inspired by this game, please email us or send us a message on our facebook page here. Seriously.
