Superheroes – Who’s the Best of the Best?

It would be an understatement to say that as far as superheroes go, there is A LOT of choice for the avid geek. With all sorts of powers at their disposal, where does one start in favouring their super idol? Wonder Woman and her Lasso of Truth maybe? think about it, no one would be able to lie to you again…. But, but you said it was a good size.  Perhaps Superman would be handy to have around when you fancy a quick trip to the other side of the world or you need someone to help you move house? And then there is Wolverine’s ability to easily chop vegetables and generally be awesome; could make him prime boyfriend material ladies.

Suffice to say, what exactly makes a superhero great is down to opinion – which is why Ladbrokes Games set out to finding which caped wonders the UK public favoured.

So who came out on top?
Going batty

In his most recent incarnation by Christopher Nolan, Batman is a brooding and mysterious character who just happens to be ripped. It’s no wonder then that, according to the survey, out of a total of 10 superheroes, Batman snagged the third top spot with 19% for date-ability.

Regarding which is the toughest superhero, Bats got the second spot with 21% of the vote, second only to the Hulk. And it looks like Batman has got the sleekest wheels too, with 61% of those surveyed saying that The Batmobile is the best superhero vehicle – leaving X-men’s Blackbird, Silver Surfer’s surfboard and The Watchmen’s Owlship in the dust.

Batman ruled the roost in film too – the best superhero film was a tough choice, but The Dark Knight snagged the top spot with 18% of the vote. Second place was also dominated by the Caped Crusader, with The Dark Knight Rises getting 17% of the vote.

Not so batty

Other superheroes which are big in the UK are Superman, Wonder Woman and Iron Man, according to the survey.

With so many superhero films out this year, there’s no doubt that some overlooked superheroes are well due a big screen break. When asked who should get a film next, those asked agreed on:

  • Aquaman – He got the least vote, with only 8%
  • Deadpool – he was second last, with only 10%
  • Nightcrawler – he got 13% of the vote
  • Hawkeye  – the archer got 14% of the vote
  • The Flash – the whizzing wonder snagged second spot with 18%
  • Wonder Woman – It’s about time this truth enforcer got her time on the big screen – and 33% agreed.

It’s not all about the good guys though – many would agree that there’s plenty of baddies out there who give the superheroes a run for their money. The toughest villain ever was decided as The Joker, while Two Face was a push-over with last place out of ten bad guys. At least Batman’s got plenty to choose from.

Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters – 3 GPPs

Take a hugely successful kid’s book series (like Harry Potter) with mythical (or magical) undertones, and turn it into an also hugely successful movie series (like Harry Potter). Sounds simple, right? I wish that were the case.

Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters Header

The Percy Jackson series of books by Rick Riordan has a simple premise; introduce a boy into a world of Greek myths and legends, but set it in modern-day America, and have a little fun with it. The books manage this really well, taking some artistic license with the stories of gods and monsters, and adding a decent teenage commentary to add the real-world spin, and also inject a little humour.

2010’s Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief provided a solid start to what could become a good movie franchise, with some interesting twists on gorgons, centaurs and sirens, as well as the amusing aging rocker Hades. The movie was fairly faithful to the book, and I was looking forward to how the series continued.

Now we have the follow up, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters – furthering the adventures of the teen demi-god and his trusty compatriots, and I was quietly looking forward to what would unfold. Unfortunately I was doomed to be massively disappointed. I’ll try and keep things as spoiler-free as I can, but there are some things I’ll be ranting about which may have the need to include them – I’ll give you fair warning though.

Pick a side, Percy!
Pick a side, Percy!

Sea of Monsters continues son of Poseidon Percy’s story directly from where the first movie ended, set about 9-10 months after Hermes’ son Luke (Jake Abel) was defeated, and the lightning bolt returned to Zeus. Percy (Logan Lerman) is living in Camp Half Blood, touted as the only safe place on Earth for demi gods due to it’s protective barrier, where he trains with his friends in battle simulation prettymuch day and night.

An attack on the camp instigated by Luke causes the barrier around it to disintigrate, and it’s deemed that only the golden fleece can be used to repair it by healing a poisoned tree (the tree is a fallen demi god who was transformed by Zeus, creating the barrier to protect the residents of the camp from harm).

The quest to retrieve the fleece is assigned to the snobby, bitchy and arrogant daughter of Ares, Clarisse (Leven Rambin), who is largely considered the best warrior of camp half blood, and she certainly knows it. Fortunately for Percy, he seems to be involved in the quest regardless thanks to a prophecy which mentions him as either the saviour or destroyer of Olympus.

Prior to Percy’s departure he’s introduced to Tyson (Douglas Smith), a Cyclops who is also the son of Poseidon, and he accompanies Percy on the quest, along with his usual companions; Athena’s daughter Annabeth (Alexandra Daddario) and Satyr Grover (Brandon T. Jackson).

The Colchis Bull
The Colchis Bull

The visual effects of the film are actually pretty decent, with some excellent work done on the Colchis Bull – I love the steampunky feel to it, and it’s actually pretty badass – and the creature effects and designs are all really intricate and interesting to look at. The effects are unfortunately heavily relied upon, with there being little other substance to the movie.

The main plot of the movie is fairly straightforward, and there’s very little variation and/or twists to take into account – this seems to give the impresion that the plot progression throughout the film is just a filler from one action scene to the next. What’s also disappointing is that there’s next to no character development or progression either – the only dynamic that seems to have been utilised is Tyson, and the reactions to is “Ocular Impairment”.

Welcome additions to the cast are Stanley Tucci who appears as “Mr. D” aka the god Dionysus, and Buffy’s Anthony Stewart Head, who replaces Pierce Brosnan as the Centaur Chiron. Another Whedonite to join the movie is the always exemplary Nathan Fillion who plays Luke’s father Hermes. Fillion’s involvement is one of the few redeeming assets of the movie, in particular one quip about cancelling the best tv series ever in which he could prettymuch have been staring directly into the camera, calling Fox a bunch of bastards. Unfortunately Hermes’ appearance is cut way too short, and as a result we’re left yearning for more of our beloved Cap’n Mal.

More Fillion please. Please?
More Fillion please. Please?

The soundtrack for the movie isn’t bad, but isn’t anything special – it does the job, and builds tension in all the right places.

Now I’m afraid I’ll be having a little bit of a rant, so if you don’t want anything spoiled, then skip to the last couple of paragraphs for my final thoughts. However if you’ve read the book, and want to know why I’m pissed off, then you may want to keep on reading.

Right, so let’s get straight to it. Screenwriter Marc Guggenheim has screwed the source material completely while adapting Sea of Monsters for the screen (but then he did write the screenplay for Green Lantern). Just a quick one… why change the title? It should be “Percy Jackson and the Sea of Monsters”… what’s wrong with that? Ok… that’s just a pet peeve of mine, so can be forgiven. The rest… can’t be at all.

To start with, in Riordan’s novel Percy doesn’t live at Camp Half Blood – he only spends the summer there… in between he goes to school, and it’s in school that he meets Tyson where they’re best friends – he also finds out about Tyson’s mythalogical status there too as he’s involved in a fight with three giants, and Percy is saved by him. The “mist” that clouds his single eye and makes him look normal is a natual occurrence, rather than applied using a perfume bottle, and its not until Percy really looks at him closely that he can see he’s a Cyclops.

Percy gets ready for a fight
Percy gets ready for a fight

Secondly, there’s an underlying storyline with Grover and his search for the god Pan… He’s not even in the book (aside from in Percy’s dreams)  until about third of the way through when he’s rescued by Percy from Polyphemus.

I could go on and on about inconsistencies and things that have been changed (for example there were 3 Colchis Bulls in the book, along with a flock of metal birds that attack Camp Half Blood, a permanent grudge between Percy and Ares resulting in spectacular fights etc etc) , but if I just sat here listing everything that was different or wrong, then you’d prettymuch only be reading a tirade of abuse. Lets just say that if you expected the screenplay to mirror the novels as much as the Harry Potter films mirror theirs, then you’ll be left wanting… much to the film’s detriment.

What makes me angry about it is that if these facets were included and unchanged, it would make the story in general much more substantial and entertaining. As it is, the movie doesn’t stand up to scrutiny on it’s own because of these adjustments… and if it means because of this that the other books don’t get adapted, it’ll be a real shame. Just to hammer this home a little bit – there would be more of Nathan Fillion if the source material was stuck to… MORE FILLION I TELL YOU!

Anyway, I won’t tear it apart any more… Sea of Monsters manages to do this all on it’s own, right down to the lacklustre ending with the reveal of the big bad guy (who incidentally looks like he’s been ripped directly from a videogame like God of War), and the incredibly quick and easy method in which he’s dispatched.

In the books, Tyson calls the Hippocampus (and Chiron) "Pony!"
In the books, Tyson calls the Hippocampus (and Chiron) “Pony!”

Overall Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters disappoints from the getgo, with a thin plot and disjointed story arc that just runs from one effects-laden action setpiece to another. You’ll enjoy the battles, but you’ll leave the theater feeling like there’s no payoff at the end of it. Judging by early reactions, it’s potentially putting the series in jepoardy… so as to whether there’ll be a sequel to adapt Percy Jackson and the Titan’s Curse or the other books remains to be seen.

If you haven’t read the novels, there’s a chance you may enjoy the film… but if you’ve read them, you are going to be incredibly irritated. If you have yet to read the books, then don’t let this film put you off – they’re great fun and well worth putting in the time to read through.

DC’s handling of Villain Month turns into epic fail.

0

epic-facebook-fail-batman

This news piece is for anyone that has been following the train wreck that has been the lead up to DC’s Villain Month, which I covered here; How to lose friends and alienate people. After numerous comic shop owners have gone to considerable lengths to ensure that their customers were informed about exactly what was going on and getting orders for what their customers wanted, specifically the much publicised 3D lenticular covers, now it turns out that DC isn’t going to be able to fulfil those orders.

‘Due to unprecedented demand for the September 3-D motion covers, DC Entertainment announces that orders on the 52 Villains Month issues will be allocated. These issues are now sold out at the publisher level.

The allocations will range from approximately 50% to nearly 100% on different titles. The allocations are based on an average of your orders of each Villains Month titles’ base title over the past few months.’

This means that comic shop owners are now having to choose which of their customers who ordered titles for Villain Month actually gets what they ordered and who is actually going to have to have the 2D version instead.

Below are some of their reactions, with Brian Gibb of Savage Critic being particularly scathing with his summary titled: The staggeringly epic incompetence of DC entertainment.

‘We put an enormous amount of effort into trying to educate customers about the 3-D covers, the importance of preordering them, and so on. You have to understand, as well, that a lot of folks weren’t at all happy about the idea of a line of $3.99 covers, and there was a certain amount of “talking people into” signing up for them. So, to find out just three weeks before shipping that there’s suddenly going to be a version of these comics without the stunts, for $1 less, well this is migraine inducing, at best.

See, if there had been ANY official and public information that this was going to happen, that there would be two versions, that these books could be allocated, the way I presented this to my customers for the last 8 weeks would have been ENTIRELY DIFFERENT.’

Jared Myland the owner of my comic shop OK Comics has this to say,

‘It was a lot of extra work, contacting people, creating order forms, setting up stock systems, processing the orders, but we got the job done.
– NOW DC have announced that they haven’t printed enough stock to fill all our orders. Shops wont get everything they need to fill their customers orders.
– Not only have DC taken away their continuity of service (one of the best things they have going for them) but they’ve created extra work for retailers who’ve previously supported the New52, only to have all this extra effort rewarded by unhappy, disgruntled customers.
– We’re now left with a situation where we have to decide which of our dedicated customers can’t have what they ordered. These are regulars and new customers who took the time to fill out forms in the shop, or email their request.
– Thanks DC. Thanks.’

Whether this will have any longterm effect remains to be seen but it’s clearly shown a fundamental inability to communicate on DC’s part and definitely won’t have gained them any goodwill from either their readers or the retailers who promote and sell their products.

Professor Elemental Comics – 9GPPs

The Prof

Once upon a time there was a popular chap-hop artist named Professor Elemental. The Prof expressed an interest in comics on his Twitter page, and an idea was born in the mind of young Christopher Mole, writer. After a brief exchange between the two it was agreed that Chris should go forth and find talented writers and artists to assist in the glorious feat of documenting the shenanigans of Professor Elemental in comic form. And so it was done.

2013-08-10 16.56.28

Since then the Prof has had two comics based on his exciting adventures released, and they aren’t stopping there! I was lucky enough to meet the writer/editor Chris at MCM Expo Manchester in July, and picked up issues 1 & 2 of the comic.

Stall MCM Expo

This biographical epic begins with the Prof’s “Quest to the Congo” where he meets his soon-to-be long suffering monkey butler Geoffrey who is too frustrated with trying to clean up after the local Gorillas who insist upon pooping right where he’s just cleaned up! After a short spell his new monkey butler learns to make the perfect cup of tea, and is forever endeared to our exuberant Professor’s heart.

2013-08-10 20.22.11

Every story is illustrated in a different style by a different artist, which really adds to the charm, and they are chock-full of gentlemanly exclamations such as “Indubitably! And bring me my horticultutal trousers!”. The rest of issue 1 sees Professor Elemental fighting with killer plants during an ill-planned scheme to win the interest of the beautiful Sadie, and dining with the inhabitants of Wonderland whilst trying to find the Mystic Golden Frog. All in all this 1st issue has set the comics in good stead for the future.

2013-08-10 16.56.20

Issue 2, in contrast to the first, has been printed in the English size which is much more enjoyable to read from in my humble opinion, plus it has a fricking T-Rex on the front, what’s not to love? There are a lot more stories this time round and while that does get a bit confusing at times (it’s hard to tell sometimes where one story ends and another begins, and “is that just a filler page or not?” crossed my mind at one point) they are no less entertaining than those from the 1st. The shenanigans continue with flying contraptions, ghosts and vigilantes, to mention but a few. It’s just a shame for the poor old Prof that nothing ever really seems to quite go his way.

2013-08-10 17.21.01

Throughout both books the artwork is incredible, the writing is impeccable and the escapades which span all over the globe, not to mention time and space, are gripping and I couldn’t put them down. Now… Where did I put my Earl Grey?

Romero’s ending – A Zombie Story

The world ended three months ago. I think it was three months, I can’t be sure, I had more important things to do than checking the calendar. The fact that I didn’t actually think to bring a calendar plays a part in my confusion too.

It seemed pointless to try and keep time, since no one would benefit from the knowledge anymore. There was nothing more to record, no countdown to absurd holidays like Valentine’s Day or Christmas, birthdays and name days and whatever other celebrations we invented to make our lives more exciting. Knowing how much older I was seemed equally unimportant. Who cares if I am now old enough to vote?

All I took when I ran away from the too cramped city of L.A. was my car and the gun my father insisted on giving me as a present. I kept it right next to my porn stash, something I used more than my gun before this. Since I had no girlfriend it came in handy. No pun intended. It’s surprising how things change.

I used to be happy, or so I thought. Happy with my books and my cats, my loud neighbours and the Chinese take-out at the corner. I wasn’t successful, nor was I a particular failure. Nothing special about me, just average as average can be.

I remember how disappointed I was each morning, staring at my reflection in the mirror. A small pimple always showing up on my too pointy chin, no matter how many “magic” creams I tried. I needed a haircut last time I did that. Looked into a mirror. I needed a haircut and a visit to the dentist to remove my braces.  It is why sometimes, when I look at the hordes of the undead moving in their tailored tatters, remnants of a better life, I wonder how come I made it, while they are nothing more than rotting corpses, animated by…I don’t know what, actually.

I don’t know what makes them tick. Is it the devil? Some odd puppeteer who got bored one day and decided to play with the humans, or what was left of them? A disease? There had been no notice, no conspiracy theorist coming out to warn people with his insane rants, absolutely nothing.

One day people just got up and started devouring each other, like whatever killer instincts they had left after eons of evolution, had kicked into overdrive. I wish I were more surprised, more confused by it, but I can’t be. We’re nothing more than animals, maybe even lower than them, we kept saying it’s a dog eat dog world out there, but guess what? It’s not the dogs that I’m worried about munching one of my legs off. Not like I’ve seen dogs in a while…I miss dogs.

Three months, give or take forever. I suppose women have a better system to keep time than men. But does it matter? Really matter? Why should it? What satisfaction would I get from waking up one day and realizing it’s been a year? Twelve whole months of nothing but rot to surround me, no beauty…just puss filled wounds that ooze death… aren’t I a cheery one?

I suppose my optimism levels dropped last week, when I realized I haven’t seen anyone in three months, anyone with a pulse that is. Never before had I stopped to acknowledge the fact that I was alone. Nothing around me but corpses, walking, bumping into each other, stopping for a moment to appraise one another, like they’re saying sorry. A sickening parody of what would’ve happened before all this. I wonder what would they say if they could talk?

“Oh, excuse me! I was in a rush to my next meal…”

“By all means, it’s my fault, I just had a fat butcher for lunch and I wasn’t looking where I was going. Do go on, I left a piece of him still twitching…”

And then they laugh and move on to their merry lives or deaths. Do we even have terms for what they are? Other than stupid movie names?

I never realised that the mind numbing television set I had in my room before this whole thing,  provided so much entertainment, until I started scripting the zombie encounters with one another. If only I were a scientist…all of this bumping and groaning they do would start making sense, I would have an epiphany and cure the world. Is it language? Is it just…like the creaking of a door, a noise, but no significance behind it?

But is there really a world left to cure? Does it deserve to be? I’ve been moving from place to place since this thing started, never staying for longer than a few days in any town that had some resemblance of civilisation and I am losing my ability to see the point in rescuing this rock I called home. Maybe the Earth or the Gods or stupid aliens with entertainment issues, decided we needed to be reset, give someone else a chance of surviving this world, so why bother? Why interfere?  Maybe it’s the bugs they chose?  They are supposedly the best of the best when it comes to adapting, right?

A million years from now, some spaceship will come and have a nice chat with a pair of flies about the horrible events that have transpired, the rise and fall of the human race. Will they even call us that? Humans. Or maybe those horrible creatures that used to swat our ancestors?

I used to say I hate the human race—that people are stupid and deserve all the shit that gets thrown at them—but I miss it. I miss someone to talk to, someone to hold my hand and tell me everything will turn out right.

Okay, maybe I don’t miss that, it’s a lie, a copout, a way of making myself feel better about the world and all that shit. But I do miss talking to someone other than myself. These long winded monologues will eventually draw the dead to my position. I know I’ll go crazy if I stop talking, but then again, am I still sane? Was I ever?

Only yesterday I had a zombie pinned under my car, a cop, judging by his outfit and I had a half an hour talk with him about the too lenient rules that probably lead to this disaster. I went on a particularly long rant about the pharmaceutical industry that was allowed to test on humans. Animals factored briefly in that, but only briefly. Since there were hardly any humans left, I was feeling biased. I took all of his grunts for approval. I actually felt a bit sad when I stepped on his head repeatedly until he took his final breath. Officer Roberts…at least he helped me out a little.  Protecting and serving right until the end, right? I wish I didn’t find that as funny as I do.

Who needs therapists anymore? People that just sit and look at you while you spill your deepest darkest fantasies on their overpriced leather couches? All you need is to trap a dead or rather, undead man off the street and boom! Instant relief.

Too bad it’s short lived, just like about everything else in this world. The new world. I wish the song “It’s the end of the world as we know it,” by R.E.M. wouldn’t constantly play in my head, it’s like everything else I’ve ever heard before was erased. I remember band names, good and shit ones, but the only song I hear is this one, over and over again, like the record is broken or it got stuck on repeat.

Each time it starts I realize I made it so far, farther than I would’ve given myself credit for. It’s truly a feat, I’m not exactly strong, or a survivor, but I made it. Skinny ol’ me! So what now? What am I actually surviving for? The promise of a better tomorrow? For three months I haven’t met a soul, not one breather, no one. Not even a cat! What am I saving my life for? Who?

If everyone died and I’m the only human, do I have some stupid hope that some aliens will drop by and take me to a zoo for endangered species? Or a museum of extinct species of the Universe? Is that the fame I want??

Huh, I guess I did go insane, aliens and gods and devils are mixing in my mind, but in a truly human fashion, fame comes first. Well, the Universe might worship at my feet, the last human alive! Woo-hoo! Great for me! I should do a little dance.

Shit, they’re moving again! Don’t they ever sleep? Do I ever sleep? Am I even still alive? Or awake?  Perhaps I got bit three months ago and I’ve been moving through life thinking I still have it.

I…I think I get it now. This is hell! It’s the perfect punishment, isn’t it? We all think we’re alive, surrounded by the dead, when in fact we’re part of the larger pack…Maybe that’s how I survived this long.  No one attacked me because they recognize me as one of their own.

But I still hear my voice, don’t I? They don’t talk…they grunt. My mother used to say I loved the sound of my own voice, judging by the amount of talking I did when surveying the rest of the world, I think she might have been right. Hm…I used to work at a theatre, maybe that’s where my penchant for long winded speeches comes from. I wonder what came of that place?      Are people still trapped inside, watching the undead perform The Romeo and Juliet, zombie version?  How would that work? A zombie with a soul and a girl with necrophilia? Where would they meet? The cemetery as she was trying to molest his dead body?

Well, if I still had hopes of being normal, I think that is now out the window. I suppose trying to stay normal in this world is absurd, it’s not like anyone can come up to me and call me on my lack of sanity. There’s no one left! I wish that wasn’t so funny in my mind. Not as funny as the cop, though.

Is this really worth it? Survival? I don’t want it anymore, I don’t. My gun has become my best friend in the past months, the one thing I can’t let go of, the one thing I cherish more than food or water. I think it’s time we made a true commitment to one another, one that unlike marriage can’t be broken. By anyone, demon, god, dead, undead…

One tiny press of the trigger and I will be done, I would join the chirpy angels in the sky, that supposedly sit on their cherubic asses all day long, watching us struggle with our lack of existence. Fuck them! Just for that alone, I won’t do it!

Coward or brave, which one am I? Clinging to life versus abandoning it…the choice should be easy, shouldn’t it? There’s nothing left, so I should probably just give up. Remember what I said about humanity? One of the things I hate about it it’s the fact that we’re desperate to survive no matter what. I hate that in myself.

Oh, God! They’re coming! Two of them are coming right at me! No…no…I should fight! I should run! But I can’t…I just can’t! What’s stopping me? What happened to my will to surv…

Shit…

Zombie Survival: Sacrifice Style

0

I awoke to the sound of pounding on my door. “What the hell? No one can get up here without a key card.” I lazily rolled over and tried to wake up my boyfriend, only to find him gone. BAM! BAM! BAM!

It’s 0300, where in the world could he be? I get up and slowly make my way to the door. Looking through the peephole, I see Crimm and a few other people all looking around frantically and yelling at me to open the damn door. I undo the deadbolt and four blood covered people literally fall into the apartment.

“What the fuck, Crimm?! It’s three in the damn morning. I am not having an after party at our place today.”

“Brittany, you have no idea do you? Have you even been watching the news?”

“No” I reply, “You know I don’t watch regular TV or even listen to the radio. You want to introduce your friends before I kick them all out?”

“Remember what I said two weeks ago about this building being easy to defend during a zombie attack?”

“Yeah…. what does that have to do with price of tea in China?”

“Will you stop being a smart ass and just fucking listen! Our base fell under attack last night by these things. I don’t want to call them zombies since they don’t act like what we would classically call a “zombie.” They took the base and the ship in under an hour.”

 ————————————————————————————————————————–

I just roll my eyes and say, “uh-huh, whatever you say.” Assuming he’s just playing a prank on me as usual. It’s then that I notice the extremely terrified looks on the others faces. One is holding a bandage on what is obviously a bullet wound to the shoulder. The other three are covered in filth and blood from head to toe, so badly their fatigues are crusty. I considered the fact that we are stationed at Pearl Harbor at this time and assume we’ve been attacked by foreign enemies. No I would have been called in if that were to happen.

“OK Crimm, tell me exactly what is going on.”

“Of all people I have to explain this to, you question this scenario? You are the only person I know who actually defends the idea of a Zombie reality. It all started off with this C-130 landing without authorization. This crowd just poured out of the cargo hatch as soon as it started to open. They were squeezing through the opening before the hatch was all the way down. I had never seen anything like it before. They were trampling each other and scrambling after the personnel on the ground that had surrounded the plane as is protocol for these situations.”

“Yeah Crimm, I know, I was in the Army. Skip the crap and get to the point.”

“Give him a break! We just fought through the weirdest shit just to get to this place and here you are, being a bitch.” This coming from someone I have never seen before in my life, looking like a medieval archer.

“And just who the hell might you be? Robin Hood?” I ask.

“Actually, my name’s Oliver Queen, but you may know me as the Green Arrow.”

You have got to be kidding me, I think as I shake my head.

“Okay Arrow, how about you fill me in while I get supplies to help this one over here, since Crimm seems to think we are in a horror movie.”

“Ma’am, he’s not kidding. It was unlike anything I’ve ever seen. These people, at least I think they were people, were just piling out of the plane without thought or pause. I watched as they took down all the people on the ground while we were on the smoking deck of the ship.”

“They were eating them” said the one with what I thought was bullet wound.

“And who are you?” I ask as I pull back the haphazardly placed bandage only to find a huge chunk of flesh missing.

“Chloe Sullivan, I’m a reporter on assignment from Metropolis. Are you the medic Crimm was talking about?”

“Unfortunately, yes I probably am.” I say as I pour water over the wound that would not stop bleeding. “This is going to hurt.” I tell her as I put crushed antibiotics on the wound. “Now here, take these, all four of them.” I start to wrap the wound the best I can with what I have in my measly kit I never bother to restock.

At this point it is starting to set in. I start to hear the commotion outside. Looking out the window of the 32nd floor, I see chaos down below. What is usually a quiet shopping center this time of morning and a dead street aside from the few people driving home from the bar, has become a circus of freakishly pale people attacking anything that moves. Mongoose, birds, and even other humans are being attacked right before my eyes. It’s then I notice the fires off in the distance on Ford Island. “Holy shit. You weren’t kidding.” I say as I back away from the window.

As reality sets in I look back at Chloe. Having been recruited by Leval Industries to do research on the latest bio-engineering in parasites, I know she won’t make it until sunrise. We had been researching the parasite found in rats called toxoplasmosa gondii, but it can only breed inside the intestines of a cat. The parasite knows it needs to get the rat inside the cat, so the parasite takes over the rats brain, and intentionally makes it run to imminent death where the cats hang out. The rat is being programmed to get itself killed without even realizing it.

We already knew that half of the worlds population is infected with this parasite, and they don’t know it. I mean really, rats and humans are not that far off when it comes to genetic composition. What I want to know though is how the parasite evolved into what I’m seeing. We had cases in the lab where the rats would be overcome by the parasite and attack each other rather than causing their own death. In the process, infecting other rats and so on. Is this what I’m seeing in real living color, outside of the lab? And why were there humans infected being dropped off in a C-130, in a now obvious attack on American soil?

Shit. With no regard for the others in the room, I go to my nightstand and get my 9mm, check the clip to make sure it’s loaded and then rejoin the others in the living room. I plop myself down on the couch after making sure I have Chloe comfortable in bed in the other bedroom. “OK, who are you two?” I ask the remaining grime covered people in my apartment.

“Captain Jack Harkness, Director of the Torchwood Institute.” Is all I hear from one, whose face I can’t see through the blood, dirt and ash.

“Are you fucking kidding me?!” I exclaim, “Let me guess, you’re The Doctor?” I sarcastically ask the remaining member of the people gathered in my living room.

“Actually, no. I’m Rory Williams, I haven’t seen the Doctor in some time.”

 ————————————————————————————————————————-

“Great our own Red Shirt on the Away Team.” I say as I cover my face in a pillow. “OK, we still have power and water for now, y’all should get cleaned up and get some clean clothes on before we lose that.” I state as I pull myself together and wrap my head around what I’ve just been told. Screw what’s going on down below. I have a gang of what I thought were fictional characters in my living room.

As they almost drag themselves to the two bathrooms in the place, I turn to Crimm. He can tell by the look on my face that I’m about to freak out on him. I ask, “How did you find them?”

“They found me. I was trying to get through the mess on the base to get home and they flagged me down. I seriously considered leaving them behind. I didn’t want blood in my car, but seeing as I was already a mess from fighting through the ship full of these bastards, I took the chance and stopped. I knew I needed to get to you and that Chloe needed medical attention. This was the safest place I could think of. The building is concrete, there are only three other apartments on this floor. I guarantee our firepower outdoes any on our floor. With your training in self defense and combat, my experience in combat, Olivers skill with his bow that I witnessed as we tried to get away, I figured we could use them to help in our mission.”

“What mission would that be?”

“Survive. Just survive for now. Hey did I mention that Jack is a time traveler?”

“I’m aware.” I say as I roll my eyes. “Why didn’t he just time travel his way out of here?”

“Something about his device being lost in the mad scramble for safety.”

I decide to not press the issue any further. Crimm gets up and makes his way to the bathroom as Rory makes his way out. I hand him clean clothes and point to the room I have Chloe in. He emerges and states that Chloe really isn’t looking so good.

With a heavy sigh, I get up knowing what must be done. I walk in to the room and realize Rory had underplayed the situation drastically. She was barely breathing and I could see the parasite taking over her bloodstream right in front of me. I walked over to the bed and sat down gently next to her. I put my hand on her cheek as she opened her eyes. I could tell that she knew what I was there to do. She weakly reached out her hand to me and with a raspy voice said, “Take this. It has all the images and video I was able to get before I got attacked.” I find a flash drive meeting my palm. The touch of it sends shivers through my body, as I was now in possession of what could be the most important information in human history, possibly the last information of the human race.

I give a small comforting smile, gently caress her cheek as Chloe takes her last breath. In one quick movement, I grab her head with both hands and snap her neck, effectively severing the connection from her brain to her body. Why waste a bullet?

I emerge from the room and no one says a thing. Everyone has reassembled in the living room and are looking as if they are just lost. I realize that they are in shock. Who wouldn’t be in a situation like this? Crimm is the first to say something, “I’m sorry you had to do that.”

“It had to be done, now we have to figure out what to do with the body.” Just then the power goes out. Fuck. We have bigger problems now. I run to the bedroom where Chloes’ body is and throw open the window, knocking out the screen as well. Rory is right behind me, so I tell him to grab her feet as I drag her by the shoulders towards the window. A look of disbelief crosses his face as he realizes what I am about to do. “Look, I can’t lift her high enough to make it our the window and we can’t have this body just laying in here. The parasite is vicious and will find another host if it hasn’t already.” With a heavy sigh, he does as I tell him and helps me to dispose the body out the window. I don’t wait to see or hear it hit the ground below. I just know.

Back in the living room, I see that Crimm has taken on the leadership role. I don’t know if he will ever know how much I appreciate that. He has Jack and Oliver out in the hallway going door to door, trying to find survivors. I hear a random shot here and there but other than that, all is quiet on the 32nd floor. We really need to start thinking about gathering supplies and securing the stairs.

Oliver’s the first to come back. As if reading my thoughts, he has gathered food and water from the other apartments. I don’t even bother to ask if they found anyone alive. The look on his face says it all. Jack follows closely behind him, arms full of medical supplies. Mostly gauze and useless prescriptions. Some we could possibly use, like the antibiotics, but who really needs blood pressure medication and anti-depressants in the long run around here?

After tying the stairway door to the apartment door across from it, effectively securing it for now, we all agree that we need to rest but someone needs to keep watch. I volunteer for first shift since I was sleeping while they were fighting for their lives, not knowing if they would survive long enough to get here. As rattled as I am, I’m elated that they did, even if I did just have to kill one of their group. As they settle in on the couch and other bedroom, I grab my fully charged cell phone and tablet. I’m hoping for some sort of signal so I can listen through the next few hours to whatever news that might be available.

As everyone restlessly sleeps, I reflect on everything that has happened in just a short few hours. I’m realizing, this really could be the end. I then remember the flash drive and phone that was in my pocket. Do I risk my precious battery charge on my computer to see what’s on it? I could get vital information on the pressing matter. I could also get nothing considering I already have a pretty good idea as to what has happened.

I decide against looking at the information on it and set to making a plan of action for when wake everyone up. I pull sheets of paper out of the cabinet and start drawing diagrams of the building and surrounding areas to go over for scouting. Just as I’m finishing putting big X’s over the places I think will be heavily infested, I hear a loud bang as the door to the stairwell is opened but snaps back hard, just as it is supposed to do. I immediately reach for my gun but the noise has already woken  up everyone else.

The door repeatedly is opened and snaps back into place. If this was an uninfected human, they would call out or be rational enough to cut the cord that is holding the door in place. With that thought in mind, we cautiously open our front door. Crimm takes point as he has the most firepower and experience. I’m just a medic gone researcher. As the door snaps open again we catch a glimpse of what is causing the racket. I am horrified at the sight but keep my cool. Rory falters and backs up against the elevators that are no longer working and stuck on whatever floor they were on when the power went out.

What used to be the security team on the property, are now standing in the stairwell. Covered in blood and other grime, some with pieces of flesh hanging from their mouths and stuck in their teeth. It is obvious they have made their way up the floors catching anything they could. I fear that most of the uninfected people in the building panicked and ran for the stairs to get out taking to their flight instinct and getting caught by the ones that usually are there to protect us. I then realize that since the power is out, the security in place is now not working. DUH! How could I overlook the security system going down?!

I look at Crimm as he looks back at me. I give a slight nod and he gives Jack the signal to undo the cord holding the door in place. The door flies open revealing fourteen infected in various areas in view on the stairs.

“Well that was a bad idea.” I say as Crimm starts popping off shots.

“Aim for the head!” I shout, knowing that the parasite infects the brain when it is in full effect. I still haven’t told everyone that I know where this came from. My fear being that they will turn on me knowing that I helped create this. I still haven’t figured out how it got out of the lab and into the hands of someone who wants to use this horrid thing this way.

We all continue to fire shots as we retreat back towards our own door that we have propped open just in case our venture tuned into exactly this. Just as I reach the door and see what I think is the last of them fall, something small and frighteningly fast runs over the bodies and clamps down on Rory’s leg.

Rule number one of combat, no one gets left behind, and that’s exactly what we forgot. Caught in the moment, we had left Rory in the hall without any help except for the .357 he had with him. Knowing he had been infected like Chloe, I take one last look at him as he fires a shot into the small child’s head. He knows what I have to do. I take aim and am about to pull the trigger when Oliver pushes me out of the way and fires off an arrow right on point. The arrow lodges in Rory’s eye. We’ve just lost another one.

With the hallway cleared, we begin to move the bodies into the other apartment, furthest from ours. Jack ties the door back in place, Oliver retrieves his arrow. I shake my head at him knowing that the arrow is now covered in infected tissue and could cause others to become infected if we keep it around. I assure him that if we can make it out of this fucking building, there is a Wal-Mart just up the road that carries archery equipment. Assuming that it hasn’t already been overrun and over-looted.

As Crimm, Oliver, Jack and I return to the apartment, we realize that as defensible as our current location is, we really have no idea what is going on around us, besides what we see from the corner windows. We have to get to the roof. It’s the only way to see around the rest of the area. Problem is, it’s another twelve floors up and we don’t know what could be in the stairwells after what just happened. We collectively decide it is best that we try to eat, knowing that if we don’t we will become too weak to fight when the time comes again. We have already lost two members that could fight, we can’t afford to lose another.

Since we have no power it is decided we use up what little perishables we had in our place when this started. Compared to things later to come, it was a feast. Mind you it was only sandwiches, milk and fresh fruit, it was still better than what we were going to be stuck with later on. We eat in silence. Each of us lost in our own thoughts. I know Crimm and I were thinking about our kids on the mainland, and if the infection had reached there as well. We found out later what Jack had been thinking about. Oliver, well we did find out what he was thinking about that day.

I decided it would be best to turn my phone on and check the alerts. As it powered up my notification tone started going off without pause. A majority of them were from Civil Defense stating that Martial Law was in effect and that we should stay inside. Then the unthinkable happened. My phone rang. It was my mother. I immediately answered.

“Mom! Thank God you’re alive. Where are the kids?” I immediately ask.

“They are here. They are fine. We were evacuated to Colorado Springs, which appears to be one of few places that is still holding up against this. Do you know what this is?” She says all in one breath.

“I have a pretty good idea, I’m just glad you are safe. Is the military still operational over there?”

“Yes, that’s all that is keeping us safe.”

“Good, have you heard of any other states having safe zones?”

“The southeastern parts have been evacuated to Ft. Bragg in North Carolina.”

Just then Crimm has turned his phone on and is talking in a hushed voice to someone very rapidly. From what I have caught he is talking to a ranking officer at Ft. Bragg trying to get a list of survivors out of him. With a “Fuck you too!” he hangs up.

“Mom, Keep the girls safe at all costs. I love you, tell the same to the babies and just stay safe.” With that my phone goes out. Crimm gets a text just as that happens. It’s a list of survivors with his last name. There are two, that’s all he needed to know to keep fighting.

 —————————————————————————————————————————

Since he was on duty when this all started, Crimm had a comm device available. It was mostly static but we got enough to know that someone was trying to find out if anyone else was still alive out there. We had to get to the roof. The building was blocking most of the signals we could pick up at this point. Damn concrete.

“OK, here’s the plan,” I state, “Crimm will take point, Jack you fall in behind me after cutting the cord on the door. Oliver, you fall in behind Jack and watch our backs. You know you are way more accurate with that bow than any of us ever will be. We are going to the roof. We have to get in contact with whoever is on the other end of that radio.”

With no objections we take positions and prepare for heading up the dreaded stairwell. “On my mark,” says Crimm. As we exit the apartment he has his right arm raised. As soon as he pulls it down, as if a well practiced move, in perfect synchronicity the door opens and Jack cuts the cord. We are all slightly stunned as there is nothing in the stairwell that we can see or hear.

“This does not mean we are in the clear….” I state the obvious. I’m beginning to feel like the Zombie moron who is always stating what everyone already knows. We quietly make our way into the darkened area. The only sounds we hear are the slight shuffling of our feet as we slowly make our way up the stairs towards the roof.

As we reach the 40th floor, we are feeling the stress of being on guard the whole way up. Only eight floors and it feels as if we have climbed Everest. Behind the doors on some floors we can hear the infected scuffling around, trying to get the door open to where we are. The doors open towards us and we are just as terrified as they are determined. We reach the 43rd floor without incident. Just as Crimm reaches the door to the roof, we hear Olivers scream “Oh shit!”

The infected have managed to get the doors open and are pouring into the stairwell after us. I can hear the ‘whoosh’ of each arrow leaving his bow as Oliver fires at each one with perfect precision. As Crimm gets the door open to the roof, I hear Jack “Oliver- fall back! I’ve got this!”

Knowing that he is just a simple time traveler, I know this cannot end well. I turn to see that Oliver had indeed listened and has traded places with Jack. I feel myself being pulled from behind out into the humid air of the rooftop. I know that Crimm has taken hold of my collar and is dragging me as I watch the horrific scene unfold in front of me.

Jack has effectively given us at least a ten yard lead on the infected, with Oliver still unloading arrows into the group, Crimm is firing into them as well. I’m amazed at the accuracy they both have. Infected are dropping, but more take their place. As Oliver reaches the door and calls out to Jack to let him know to turn and run towards us, we see Captain Jack just turn and give a cheeky smile at us. Suddenly, he is gone. So are a majority of the infected that had remained in the stairwell.

“That bastard had his device the whole fucking time!” I yelled. He had known what he would have to do eventually. Jack had sacrificed himself to save the rest of us by using his time traveling device, which had a radius of about 5 yards, to take himself and the infected with him to only God knows when.

It was as the door closed that we heard the helicopter. I looked up through the blood on my face to see Crimm on the radio telling the pilot that we were here and uninfected. A few moments later a ladder dropped from the chopper. Each of us climbed up as fast as we could. Just as Oliver made it off the roof, the door burst open and the infected started to flood onto the roof. The helicopter made a quick movement and we all almost lost our footing, but managed to hold on. As the copter flew away from what was once going to be our tomb, we all climbed in. Covered in blood, dirt and tears, we all strapped ourselves in.

We looked down to see hundreds of infected still pouring out onto the roof drawn by the sounds of our retreat. I looked at Crimm, he was unreadable at that point but he met my eyes and I knew. I fell into his arms the best I could while still being strapped into the seat. Oliver appeared as if he was going to pass out but had a look of relief on his face. As I sobbed I heard Crimm talking into the comm to the pilot.

Next stop…. The T.A.R.D.I.S.

—————————————————————————————————————————

I awoke to find myself in my bed, unscathed. My alarm screaming at me to get the hell up. Crimm was sleeping through it as usual, peacefully. I got out of bed and walked out to the living room to find everything completely normal. With a sigh of relief I walk back to the bedroom and climb back into bed with my loving boyfriend. He holds me close and asks, “another bad dream?”

“You could say that.” I reply as I just pull in closer to him and close my eyes.

Move over Winter, TitanCon’s coming!

0

It’s August, the sun is shining, the country is unnaturally warm, and like most people I’m enjoying what Summer has to offer. I’m making use of my free time, writing, sewing, rambling innately about all manner of things to anyone that’ll listen, but more importantly – counting down the days until September. For most people on this side of the pond, September signals the beginning of Autumn, the return to college, and the end of another year’s worth of sunshine and frolics. But for me, September holds a much greater deal of appeal, because this September, TitanCon once again returns to Belfast.

titancon_2013

So what’s TitanCon, I hear you ask? Well, to put it simply: TitanCon is a Science Fiction & Fantasy convention with a very strong emphasis on Game of Thrones. Which, I can’t lie, as a die-hard fan of the books, is somewhat of a glorious dose of respite in filling in the time it takes for HBO to gift us with another phenomenal series. As an event, it’s still within it’s infancy, with this year being it’s third official gathering, but if past events are anything to go by, it’s definitely worth a look if you’re able. And if you don’t believe me, check out the coverage provided by WIC.net last year!

Unlike certain other conventions which are geared predominantly towards cosplay or spending five minutes and an extortionate fee on meeting your idol, Titancon has a much more relaxed atmosphere. It’s a place where you can mingle with some of the actors from your favourite show, you can speak to up and coming talent and meet some of the most inspirational authors, artists and downright cool people to have graced the genre in recent years – all while surrounded by like minded individuals. Take this year for example, amidst the collection of Thrones stars attending (Ron Donachie, Laura Pradelska, Amrita Acharia, Miltos Yerolemou, Aimee Richardson & more to be announced) we also have the likes of Laurence Donaghy, a homegrown Irish author launching his new trilogy, with multiple other artists, writers, and actors emerging to spend a few glorious hours with us fine folk!

Official 2013 Tee

The convention itself takes place on Saturday the 7th September, and in the usual fashion, will be full of photo ops, panels, and with any luck, maybe even the infamously spectacular Dothraki jewellery workshop! Prior to that however, there’s also a literature night on the 6th, in which the smorgasbord of literary talent will be around to properly set the tone for the weekend ahead, and after Titancon, on the 8th, we are once again presented with the Bohemian Rhapsody butchering glory that is the coach tour of GoT shooting locations, with a fancypants feast thrown in too for good measure.

We’ve covered a lot of things here at Geek Pride over the last year, generally within the mainstream circuit, but it’s a real privilege to be telling you about something as small, but exciting as TitanCon. It’s unique in it’s delivery, which is why above all else, if you have a spare weekend and the means to get to Belfast, I’d highly suggest checking it out.  I know even the White Walkers can’t keep me away!

Free Film Friday – The Musketeers of Pig Alley

Last week we took a journey back to the earliest days of American cinema and explored an influential forerunner of one of the seminal film genres. For Free Film Friday this week I thought we should continue in the same vein, and so I decided to check out one of the very first gangster movies. In doing so I discovered a picture brimming with ambition but surprisingly lacking in execution.

musketeers1There are many factors which arguably make this film a genuine archetype. The American Mutoscope and Biograph Company which released it was the first American film studio, and the movie’s director D.W. Griffith is the controversial father of Hollywood cinema. His reputation and legacy established through a duality of influence and revulsion was gained through his direction of The Birth of a Nation in 1915, a divisive account of the American Civil War and its aftermath which portrayed black Americans as manipulative subhuman antagonists and the Ku Klux Klan as heroes. Despite its intensely contentious subject matter, that picture is still highly regarded today for its innovative film-making and directorial techniques which are still practiced today. Today’s free film, The Musketeers of Pig Alley was made by Griffith three years before The Birth of a Nation, and as such the curiosity it arouses in the film buff is considerable.

In seventeen minutes the film tells an intricate story. Poverty stricken Lillian Gish is left alone as her husband Walter Miller attempts to utilize his skills as a musician to earn some money. While he is away, she is pursued by a local gangster, played by Elmer Booth, whom she rebukes. Soon her husband returns, and Booth steals his wallet. Not long after this, another member of the criminal underworld drugs Gish’s drink while attempting to seduce her and Booth saves her from him in the nick of time. The two rival gangsters then engage in a gunfight, during which Miller takes back his wallet. Seeking refuge from the police in the aftermath, Booth finds himself in the couple’s apartment, and recognizing Gish as the woman he saved earlier, enlists her to give him an alibi.

a206a2492e7fe81141_8pm6bndqv

In terms of the plot I would say that this picture works remarkably well. The crossing of various character paths is a theme that has become synonymous with the gangster movie genre over the years, particularly in such notable films as Pulp Fiction. But while the story is intriguing, it is the way that it’s told which is lacking. You have to watch the scene where Gish’s drink is spiked a couple of times before you realize what is going on, for the actual act of slipping a nefarious substance into her cocktail is easily missed as all of your attention is drawn to Booth’s character watching the scene unfold. On first viewing you don’t get that he is saving her from a creep, you think his intervention stems from jealousy and a remaining desire to have her for himself despite her earlier objection. The gun battle too is a little disappointing, amounting to not much more than a whole lot of smoke obscuring the action.

musketeers-1There are quite a few noteworthy bits of trivia for discerning film geeks within this movie. Elmer Booth’s heavy is played by Harry Carey, who would go on to star in numerous John Ford Westerns, and whose son Harry Carey Jr. would become an established star in his own right. More importantly, this is widely considered to be the earliest film to use the innovative ‘follow focus’, a focus control mechanism designed to increase efficiency in film production. The fading of the background and sharp focus on the gangster’s faces as they sneakily walk through an alleyway is a scene often cited as an early example of this technique.

I think the main thing to remember about The Musketeers of Pig Alley is that it is perhaps more prototype than archetype. New ideas are being tested and they don’t fully work just yet, but the important thing is that they are being tried. Griffith would have more success displaying his abilities three years later in The Birth of a Nation, and the gangster film would continue to find its feet through various pieces of experimentation until it produced three genuine archetypes in the early 1930s: Little Caesar, The Public Enemy and the original Scarface.

All in all this is a significant milestone in American cinema, albeit one that is perhaps lacking in enduring appeal.

Cast of Archer takes over Star Trek animation

0

I am a huge fan of Archer, seriously people if you do not know what I am talking about then you must stop reading this and go seek it out. Also if you don’t know who Archer & co are then you’re probably not going to find this as hilarious as you should.

The hugely talented cast of the show have lent their character’s voices to the Star Trek  animation, resulting in a clever and side splitting series named Starcher Trek. There already two episodes available which I have posted below for your convenience.  I particularly enjoy the Archer and Lana exchanges, classic Archer. Enjoy!

London Anime Con July 2013

On July 20th-21st, not only were Geek Pride at the Manchester MCM, some of us were also at the London Anime Con at Holloway’s The Rocket.  I attended the event in February so the first thing I did was take a look around comparing it to the last.

The same activities were on offer but there was a slight difference in the layout, it was spread out more than last time mainly due to it being a summer event and so the outside space was used more. Most notably in the courtyard there was a Japanese-style cafe complete with waitresses dressed in maid outfits. Archery and hula hooping were also part of the outdoor activities.

The downstairs area had a lot more seating then before, the TCG and anime screening areas shared a room but both had more space than the previous con. The video gaming area was quite a bit smaller this time, but there still appeared to be the same amount of consoles, nothing seemed to have been sacrificed.

There was a greater mix of consoles; at the last event, the gaming areas had a very strong focus on retro consoles such as SNES, N64 and PS One; this time they added Xbox 360s and Wii Us to the area. There were still plenty of retro machines though and I don’t remember the last time I saw that many CRT TVs in one room. There was a also a separate gaming areas for PC gamers and so it felt like there was something everyone in the gaming department.

The guests of honour, both voice actors, were David Vincent who is best known as the voice of Grimmjow in the series Bleach and Mike Pollock, who voices Dr Eggman/Dr Robotnik in the Sonic games. During Q&A sessions they both expressed a lot of enthusiasm for conventions and spoke of how it is very rewarding for them to interact with their fans. I don’t believe they were just trying to butter up the audience,  I noticed they made time for anyone who wanted a chat with them while they were off-stage, particularly David Vincent, who I saw on a number of occasions chilling out with fans.

LAC1

As always, there was a very strong focus on cosplay and visitors were encouraged to dress up as their favourite characters, which most people did and with a lot of effort. Guest cosplayers, Mashashy and Alien Queen gave tutorials; one thing I picked up was that when designing a costume, it’s much more important to have comfort in mind than to imitate the original completely. They were also on the cosplay Q&A panel, amongst other guests including photo booth girl, Stacey Rebecca and GP writer, Lady Noctis. They all showed a lot of passion for their pastime/art as they answered many questions from the audience, including “Who would you cosplay as if money/time where not an issue?”  My favourite answers being Totoro and the full suit version of Samus from the Metroid games. Lady Noctis interviewed Stacey Rebecca while she was there and you can read it here.

LAC2

Overall, it was a great weekend and I enjoyed it even more than the last one and it certainly benefited from not being so condensed. The best thing about the LAC is the friendliness and enthusiasm of both the guests and the public; everyone I spoke to seemed happy to be there and were very willing to pose for photos. This kind of event is a very social one and is made even better by the many people that got involved in the activities. I think I can safely say that fun was had by all.

We took a heap of photos, a selection of which can be viewed here and a video which can be viewed below. All credit for both the photos and the video goes to David Sampedro. Enjoy!
