Sir Ian McKellen to play Sherlock

Sir Ian McKellen to play Sherlock Holmes

Whilst there are a lot of Sherlock Holmes interpretations floating around on TV and film right now, two on television ‘Sherlock‘ and ‘Elementary‘ and Robert Downey Jr’s portrayal of the super sleuth on the silver screen. But Sir Ian McKellen is set to take the character in a completely different direction.

The movie entitled ‘Slight Trick of the Mind‘, focuses on a much older, retired Sherlock. Just like RDJ’s portrayal of Sherlock, ‘Slight Trick of the Mind‘ will be in the same time period as the original stories were set in. The full plot summary is below.

A Slight Trick Of The Mind
A Slight Trick Of The Mind

[box_light]’In 1947, Sherlock Holmes, long retired, lives in a sleep Sussex village, with his housekeeper and her amateur-sleuthing son. But far from living out a peaceful retirement, he is haunted by an unsolved case from fifty years ago. He remembers only fragments: a confrontation with an angry husband, a secret bond with his beautiful but unstable wife. With his legendary mental powers on the wane, and without his old sidekick Watson, Holmes is faced with the toughest case of his life – a case that might finally reveal to him the mysteries of the human heart.‘[/box_light]

I believe that whilst there is a lot of Sherlock out there right now, verging on over-saturation. The thought of Sir Ian McKellen playing an older, retired Detective Holmes intrigues me and if the rest of the cast can act half as well as the great McKellen then consider me a movie ticket poorer already.

Stargate, The Re-boot

The Age of the Reboot
The Age of the Reboot

In an entertainment industry where original ideas are few and far between and re-boots are all the rage. Spiderman, Batman, Superman, Total Recall, Conan and even talks of a new Gremlins, Stephen King’s IT and a new Hitman film being talked about. It’ll come as no surprise to some people that the popular series Stargate series has been penciled in for a new coat of paint so to speak.

Sadly for some fans this seemingly means there will be no Stargate SG-1 or Atlantis film coming to the big screen. However in an interview Rolan Emmerich gave Digital Spy, the highly acclaimed director of the first Stargate film back in 1994 has plans to make the franchise into a trilogy. Emmerich went and spoke to MGM who hold the rights to the film and asked to do a reboot trilogy. It’s doubtful that Kurt Russell or James Spader will be reprising their roles nearly 20 years after the original but they may still play some form of smaller role in the film.

If the re-boot becomes successful then who knows, it could spawn yet more television series for the highly popular franchise, I just hope they won’t cancel it like they did Stargate Universe (I don’t care what anybody says, I enjoyed it!).

A.C. Crispin Passes Away

Annpicturquoise2Yesterday was a sad day within the world of Star Wars, especially for those of the Expanded Universe. Author A.C. Crispin who brought us The Han Solo Trilogy; has sadly passed away after her battle with Cancer.

Below, is a farewell message from Crispin that she posted on her page prior to her passing:
I’ve been hesitant to make this post, but it’s time. I want to thank you all for your good wishes and prayers. I fear my condition is deteriorating. I am doing the best I can to be positive but I probably don’t have an awful lot of time left. I want you all to know that I am receiving excellent care and am surrounded by family and friends.

I wish all aspiring writers the will to finish and a good contract. Please continue to monitor Writer Beware and be careful who you sign with. Victoria Strauss and Richard White are there to help.
I’ve asked Michael to collect and read me your messages. As I don’t know how things will proceed, I don’t know if I’ll have the strength to post on Facebook again.
We at Geek Pride send our condolences to the Crispin family, and I personally, would like to say thank you so much for your incredible contributions to the Star Wars Universe.

Brian Blessed yells about Rome: Total War II

0

If you’ve been following us on facebook , you will know that our glorious leader, Matt, has been lost to the glory of Rome: Total War II. We’ll miss you sir.

The video below is just a taste of the latest installment of the RTS franchise, teaching you about all things sharp, pointy and Roman with the utter legend that is Brian Blessed.

My favourite quotes from this video are as follows:

“Ooh, I just killed a barbarian, there are no end to my talents!”

“ Aaah, that’s going to make him cough”

“I’d love one these in my Christmas stocking!”

“Burn in hell, barbarian!”

It’s much better coming from him though, so check it out below.

Free Film Friday – Death Rides A Horse

DeathridesAs this feature is now a month old, I thought I would revisit the theme of the first edition of Free Film Friday. A lot of good movies are in the public domain because the set time on their copyright has expired, but often a really sweet flick will lapse into free film territory due to the filmmaker or studio forgetting to keep track of it. I couldn’t believe my luck when I discovered a genuinely fun and really quite gripping Spaghetti Western for your enjoyment.

Death Rides a Horse is something of a cult hit. A contemporary of Sergio Leone’s brilliant “Dollars Trilogy” which redefined the Western in the 1960s and influenced a generation of movie-makers, you may very well be familiar with this one because it too was a tremendous influence on a myriad of auteurs. Namely, on a Tarantino piece by the name of Kill Bill.

Both movies feature a hero seeking vengeance against a party of bandits who commit a personal atrocity against them. The act in question differs in both films, but the Bride in Kill Bill and the hero of Death Rides a Horse (ironically named Bill and played by John Phillip Law) both vividly remember their traumas in the exact same way, showcased through some impressive cinematography.

Kill-Bill-Death-Rides-A-Horse

But leaving aside the Tarantino connection, I must say that this is actually one of the best films I have come across in the public domain.

Revenge is a common component of the Western, and at the time of this picture’s release the theme was remarkably prevalent. It was the driving force behind protagonists in For a Few Dollars More, Once Upon a Time in the West, Hang ‘Em High and the Oscar-winning True Grit, all released in the same decade. This film also shares a couple of key features with certain contemporaries, its star Lee Van Cleef and the composer of its soundtrack, Ennio Morricone.

death-rides-a-horse-2Van Cleef is in this film, as he was in so many others, an utter badass. The wily old-school outlaw opposite Law’s clean cut good guy, his presence enhances a good story and makes it more entertaining. Morricone’s score too, though not quite as epic as the work he did with Leone, really adds to the overall experience. And just as with the musical watch in For a Few Dollars More, it is intriguing to see the soundtrack actually creep its way into the world of the film in the scene where three strikes of a piano key act as the count-off for a duel.

If you loved The Good, The Bad and The Ugly then I believe this is just the film for you. I think I can safely say this is definitely the most exciting and thrilling movie I have discussed in this blog so far, and really all trivia and film history reasons aside, I think you should watch it simply because it’s entertaining as hell.

Simon Pegg pranks the entire cast of Star Trek: Into Darkness with science

0

The wonderful fellow geek, Simon Pegg, has well and truly set the bar for on set pranking. Persuading  J.J. Abrams to go along with it, as well as several members of the set crew, he simply convinced his fellow actors they are required to wear ‘neutron cream’ because lasers and science.  The results are side splitting;  from Chris Pike to Benedict Cumberbatch, they all fell for it. The prank evolves before our very eyes making Pegg truly deserving of the title of Epic Prankster. Well played Mr Pegg, well played.

Batwoman Team Leaves Over Gay Marriage Row

0

Um… DC… What the hell?

The creative team for Batwoman announced last night that they would be leaving the project due to editorial interference becoming unbearable. After a drawn out argument with editorial staff  J.H.Williams III and W.Haden Blackman have decided that the only option is to leave, they felt they were constantly asked to “tone down” the gay content of their book.  Batwoman is DC’s only lesbian lead character in the new 52, and the final straw for the team was being denied to ever show an actual marriage between Kat Kane and her fiancee’ Maggie Sawyer. The team claim that it was their intention to have the marriage happen towards the end of the current story arc, but were overturned at the last minute.

I'd overturn her. what?
I’d overturn her. what?

DC have been silent over the row, but after their comments over a Wonder Woman movie being “Too Hard” (while Marvel makes a movie about a talking Racoon) it’s beginning to smell rather sexist over at the old mill. It’s a massive loss, because what these the creative team were doing with Batwoman was nigh on incredible. They fleshed out a rather 2D character and made her a complete and utter BAMF – and now that team has gone, because a few people may be offended.

see? BAMF.
see? BAMF.

The most baffling part is when you you really start to think about it, this is the company that allowed us to see a madman shoot a teenager through the spine, (semi) permanently crippling her, while he kidnaps (and possibly rapes) her mother. This was almost more than 20 years ago. Is gay marriage that offensive, DC?

No. Booster Gold is though.
