Power Up

It’s been a long time since I was challenged by a shooter game, be it a horizontal or vertically-scrolling title… and I can count on one hand the games that I kept going back to; Hellfire, R-Type and Ikaruga. Now I have one more title to add to this list – Power Up.

New to Xbox Live‘s Indie section, Power Up is a labour of love from one man: Mike Hanson – the single developer that makes up Psychotic Psoftware.

Power Up Header

Very rarely are we able to see the complete production cycle of a game – most of the time we hear of a game’s intended release, possibly see some alpha gameplay, and sometimes take part in a beta or two. This is where the beauty of crowd-funded projects comes in – sites like Kickstarter gives the game developers direct contact with it’s intended catchment audience, providing as much, or as little information as they like.

This was what gave birth to Power Up – Mike succeeded in funding his title in February of this year, aiming for £5,000, and eventually acquiring donations amounting to £7,050 when the Kickstarter project came to a close – and I was one of the backers (in fact, if  you look closely, you’ll see “James ‘SpasmicPuppy’ Buckingham” in the credits of the game).

Was the funding well spent? Was all the blood, sweat and hard work poured into the game over the past few months worth it with the end result? The short answer is definitely a resounding yes, and here’s why.

The story in Power Up is relatively light – you’re the pilot of a prototype space fighter dubbed “Weapon F”, and in the aftermath of the destruction of mankind at the hands of a race of reptilian aliens, you have one thing on your mind: revenge.

Power Up - Dialogue
The retro RPG dialogue is great

The dialogue boxes remind me of the old RPG-style on-screen prompts you’d get in the days of old, before speech sampling was possible, and it’s definitely one of the key factors of the game that makes me feel nostalgic.

The graphical style of the game is great – sprites are beautifully rendered and animated, with some great particle effects to go along with it. The action is fast and frantic, even when you play on the Easy difficulty setting (there are 4 in total; Easy, Medium, Hard & Psychotic). The main thing that sets Power Up apart from other sideways-scrolling titles is that you’re given all the tools you’ll need from the getgo – there’s no earning new powers or guns.

You have five different weapons, all dealing with enemies coming from different directions – the green weapon is your straightforward forward-shooting gun, the orange gun is a multi-shot weapon, the blue gun fires backwards, red fires up and down and finally the purple weapon is a plasma gun that leaves a trail of  devastation  in it’s wake.

Power Up
Battles quickly get frantic

You also pick up score bonuses, special attacks and boosters for your speed and force field. The special attack destroys everything on-screen (as you’d expect), and the force field becomes invaluable in later levels when you can’t avoid enemy fire.

The sound and music in the game is great – it has that retro feel to it, but is very atmospheric and a lot of the music had me nodding in time with it too. Mike’s background in music has served him well here. The sound effects are great – with your ship making quite pathetic noises to start with when you’re weak, but as your guns increase in power you get a much more satisfying blast.

There are only a couple of gripes I have with the game, and to be honest I’m clutching at straws just doing that. Firstly, the game is pretty short… though this depends on the difficulty you choose. On Easy, it’s quite possible to play through the game in one sitting fairly quickly, but when you get to the Medium and over difficulty settings you’ll notice the action goes from challenging to insane.

My second gripe is that once the game is complete, you unlock different paint jobs for your ship, but at present there’s no real benefit to this, other than making your ship look cool(er). Other than that, the main replay value is the challenge of completing it on the upper difficulties, particularly the “Psychotic” difficulty… and for me this is still a massive draw.

The bosses are rather epic-looking
The bosses are rather epic-looking

Where Power Up really excels though is the pure simplicity of it. The game doesn’t try to be complicated, or have a convoluted plot or some bizarre gameplay mechanic. It takes inspiration from the classics, and it shows – that’s what makes it great. The controls are simple, and easy to use even when you’re panicking about near-misses… the game is tense and kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time playing.

However I, for one, am left scratching my head as to how one guy is responsible for this title. Most games of this quality and polish take a group of people to create, and yet Mike Hanson seems to have pulled it off. I can’t wait to see what he has up his sleeve for his next title (aside from the PC version of Power Up, due in November).

If there’s one indie title you should buy, then it’s Power Up. For the incredibly  meager sum of £0.69 (at the time of writing), you really can’t go wrong. Buy it now, thank me later. If you want to check out some gameplay, and have a little chuckle at the same time, check out a video from some friends of mine over at Armed With Controllers here.

SEGA purchases Atlus

sega

The developers of Persona are now working for Sega after they came to an agreement with Atlus‘ struggling parent company, Index Corporation to purchase the developer from them for a reported £88m.

Sega registered an interest in acquiring Atlus when Index filed for bankruptcy back in June after filing for ‘government-managed rehabilitation’ to the tune of £154 million. This didn’t mean that Sega acquired Atlus easily, as according to a report made from Bloomberg Japan they were only one of twenty companies interested in the development company.

In the official filing confirming the purchase, Sega mentions Atlus’ Megami tensei, Persona and Etrian Odyssey IPs as crucial assets. This means that all Persona fans out there can finally breathe easily to the knowledge the game series could continue.

Former Nintendo President Hiroshi Yamauchi dies aged 85

Hiroshi Yamuchi Dies Aged 85

The third president of Nintendo, Hiroshi Yamauchi, predecessor to Satoru Iwata has died today. Yamauchi took control of the company in 1949 from his dying grandfather. It was here that, with the help of gifted luminaries such as Gunpei Yokoi (Creator of the Gameboy) and Shigeru Miyamotu (Super Mario Bros), Yamauchi moved Nintendo into the market of electronic toys, taking the company from a small playing card producer into a world-wide entertainment giant.

Having conquered the market in Japan, Yamauchi set his sights on America, exploiting a growing market in which there had been little domestic input. The former president oversaw the manufacturing of the Famicom or NES, before seeing to the launches of the SNES, N64 and Gamecube, before ceding his position to Iwata in May 2002.

Details of the visionaries death have yet to be confirmed to the public, however Nintendo has confirmed the sad news to the Japanese media.

Warlord of Mars: Dejah Thoris: The Vampire Men of Saturn

0

In self-imposed exile due to her actions nearly causing the fall of Helium.(the city she called home), Dejah Thoris is now wandering the northern wastes racked with guilt for her actions- even though her will was not her own. An encounter with a member of a mythical race in the wastes leads to Dejah being kidnapped by the Vathek;a dominant vampiric race. Finding herself on a different planet, far from her home of Barsoom, Dejah must stop the Vathek’s plans to make slaves of everyone on Barsoom.

Warlord of Mars: Dejah Thoris( like its parent title) is set in the pulp sci-fi world created by Edgar Rice Burroughs for his Barsoom series 100 years ago.

Dejah Thoris encounters some wildlife.
Dejah Thoris encounters some wildlife.

This title though is set before the arrival of John Carter ( the hero of Warlord of Mars), 400 years before- and shows Dejah’s adventures in that time.

Dejah Thoris is a red skinned stunningly beautiful princess of Lesser Helium and a skilled warrior and accomplished fighter (even though Helium is a patriachal society) .

The inhabitants of Mars wear very little in the way of clothing due to the arid climate; Dejah’s clothing consisting of little more than jewelery and a thong. This makes the title an easy target for accusations of sleazy sexploitation, but it should be noted that the men for the most part are just as bereft of clothing.

The previous volumes of this title have been an enjoyable exploration of pulp sci-fi. A potentially endless series of untold stories, as the foundation and the perils and pitfalls of Martian living being a fertile basis for adventures taking in strange creatures and exotic locations.

That being said, there’s a fundamental problem manifesting now: Previously art on this title has been both impressive and dynamic courtesy of Carlos Rafael. Handling bizarre creatures, alien landscapes, action and dialogue driven events with ease, with the assistance of Carlos Lopez’s colours. As of issue 14 Rafael left the series which has lead to this collection featuring art from one Deborah Carita, which is some of the worst art to feature in anything in a long time.

Even if a story is well written, bad art will break a readers immersion in that story, which is exactly what happens here; almost every other panel features yet another blatant display of a fundamental failure of the understanding of anatomy, especially female anatomy. This is a huge problem in a title with a female lead, even bigger when she has little in the way of clothing. It’s pretty surprising to see such amateurish art in a title from a well known publisher, it wasn’t too surprising to learn that Deborah Carita hasn’t done much work in comics. Some of this is so bad it makes Rob Liefield look like Henry Gray.

The story from Robert Place Napton has some nice ideas in the mix. Andlaust (one of the Vathek) becomes infatuated with the martian princess Dejah after tasting her blood,

The Vathek are not known for their hospitality.
The Vathek are not known for their hospitality.

She stumbles across a resistance against the Vathek( oppressors by the Palidor a subjegated race). The idea of ‘Blood camps’,where the Palidor are herded together awaiting their fate, to be drained by the Vathek or having one of their officers take a special interest and keep them alive for numerous feedings is genuinely chilling.

This title does seem at risk of repeating itself though with Dejah seemingly becoming a damsel in distress during writer Robert Place Napton’s tenure, which goes against the roots of the character.

There are a few effective images, one of a forlorn Dejah looking at her native Barsoom aka Mars and there are some cliffhanger endings to the issues featured too but these are somewhat blunted by the shockingly bad art.

More alien aspects, like the dragon-like creatures which are used for transport by the Vathek fare better and it’s pretty obvious that male anatomy is clearly less of a challenge. Although there are also numerous examples of a failure to understand panel layout and positioning which becomes increasingly frustrating as the story continues.

The interior art is a stark contrast to the stunning covers from Paul Renaud and Fabiano Neves it has to be said.

The Legend of Niche Nights – Gaming, Cosplay, Anime and Comic Events (with Dinosaurs)

0

Isn’t it bleedin’ great to be a geek at the minute? Or a nerd? If you find either of those titles derogatory then…isn’t it great to be someone into really cool stuff and things? I remember buzzing from getting past the first level of Lemmings! Anyone else think fondly back to the “awesome” graphics of Final Fantasy 7? Now we’ve got virtual reality (almost) and we don’t even have to leave the house to buy games. Isn’t it great that instead of Hollywood blockbusters being all heart-warming and stuff, we get comic book adaptations and Joss Whedon?
The thing is, even the World of Warcraft obsessives among us need a little face-to-face time. When the Buffy-seven-season-marathon is over, I usually crave a little outside world, especially if it’s Buffy themed.

This is why Niche Nights was set up. For over 10 years my companion (not in a Dr. Who way and definitely not in a Firefly way) and I have been DJing and putting on gigs all over England and we figured “Why not put on some nights where we can play S.N.E.S while DJing and dress up like our favourite characters?” That’s what we thought and then this happened…

Grand Theft Auto V launch roundup: breaking records, best deals and just a little controversy

0

GTA-5

After  years of anticipation, teaser trailers and rumor, the biggest entertainment title release of the year has finally arrived and players across the world have Grand Theft Auto V in their hands.

Matt's view at his local midnight launch last night.
Matt’s view at his local midnight launch last night. Oddly we haven’t heard much from him today.

Despite some really nasty weather conditions across the UK, fans came out in force last night with hope of being one of the first to pick up a copy of the game at midnight. Our own Matt Walklate attended a midnight launch at his local supermarket and was greeted with a queue that stretched far out of the door and into the car park.

For those who ordered online and weren’t lucky enough to receive an early copy from Amazon over the weekend, forums are rife with complaints about late delivery from certain retailers whilst the Royal Mail have even taken to Twitter to promise additional deliveries as they struggle to keep up with the extra workload.

Games industry website MCV have reported that the game is set to break all previous sales records with a revenue of $1Bn worldwide within the first month alone and the hashtag #GTAV has been included in over 2 million tweets within the last 24 hours.

Review scores have been mostly positive with an average Metacritic score of 98 and journalists have especially praised the visuals, story and technical accomplishment of the virtual world. In our own review, I scored the game as a 5 out of 5, referring to it as “not only the single greatest video game of this generation but also as one of the most well constructed video games of all time”.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a proper GTA game without stirring up some controversy and many reviewers have called Rockstar North’s motives into question over a mission featuring torture and the game’s overall attitude to women. Gamespot’s Caroline Petit described GTA V as “politically muddled and profoundly misogynistic” whilst Tom Bradwell at Eurogamer found the torture unsettling and commented that the sequence “is not particularly effective without some commentary” from Rockstar.

Postman Pat says Relax....
Postman Pat says Relax….

If you’ve yet to get in on the action, then there are still some good deals to be had for both the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game in the UK.

Tesco are currently selling GTA V online for £38 but using the discount code TDX-DV73 at checkout will reduce the price of £33 and delivery should happen before the weekend.

Xbox 360 version: http://www.tesco.com/direct/grand-theft-auto-v/288-8014.prd

PS3 version: http://www.tesco.com/direct/grand-theft-auto-v/623-6251.prd

Alternatively, if you don’t want to wait for delivery then the best deal on the high street is still to be had at Tesco where the instore price is £38 solo or £32 if purchased with any PSN or Xbox Live subscription/points card over the value of £17.70. If your local Tesco store have sold out then the next best price is £39.97 at Asda for both formats.

Be sure to checkout our official review below if you haven’t already and if you already have the game then let us know what you think. We may also be looking to set up a Geek Pride Crew when the GTA: Online launches on 1st October so stay tuned for further details.

Ben Affleck Responds to Batman Criticism

0

oobviCGSince it was announced that Ben Affleck had been cast as Batman in Zack Snyder’s upcoming sequel to Man of Steel, the decision has received a huge amount of criticism. Well, in an interview with Jimmy Fallon, Affleck finally gave a response to taking on the role and the internet backlash.

41-year old Affleck remarked that originally he had his doubts about taking the role, believing that his age might be an issue. However, after seeing Snyder’s vision for the character of a ‘tired and weary’ superhero and very different to Christian Bale’s portrayal, the new actor was reassured that he was right for the role.

When Affleck accepted the role, he was warned by the studio that he might receive a rather negative reaction. He spoke with Fallon about being shown audience reactions to previous Batman castings and the hate actors received prior to films being released. On his briefing, Affleck commented ‘they send me [reactions for] people who were in these movies who did a great job and they’d say, ‘Kill himmmm!’

In the interview, he laughed off the idea of criticism, saying that he could handle the reaction after being told to maybe avoid the internet for a few days. Affleck commented that if he can handle an Emmy snub, he could handle this, then joked about his reaction to seeing the response on the internet.
”I handle s**t, you know what I mean – I’m very tough. So I saw the announcement, I look at the first comment and it’s like, ‘Ben Affleck is going to be Batman’ and the first one goes, ‘Noooooooo!”
ben-affleck-daredevil-batman

When I heard the announcement about Affleck’s casting, my response was pretty similar to the majority of folk, but you’ve gotta respect the guy. He’s well aware that an awful lot of people are against him playing the caped crusader and he’s prepared to deal with that. What we’ve got to keep in mind is that this isn’t a Batman film. It’s a sequel to Man of Steel that’s going to pit Superman and Batman against each other. Forget my doubts as Affleck as Batman, I’ve got doubts about the whole thing. With a role that’s been cast to so many different actors over the years, people are always going to disagree on a new guy taking over. Remember Adam West? We love him now, but I’m sure there were plenty of folk who hated the thought of him playing their favourite comic book hero.

I’m certainly not going to be in any rush to see the sequel to Man of Steel, and that’s not solely because of Ben Affleck playing Batman. It’s like he says in the interview, people make judgements on casting decisions before the film has even be released. I’m still not convinced, but when the guy hasn’t taken thousands of people petitioning for a new casting to heart and can joke about it, it does make you feel a little bad for signing it…

The Walking Dead gets a Spin-Off

Robert Kirkman, big zombie fan.

Robert Kirkman has announced his excitement at the plans for a spin-off from AMC’s smash hit series The Walking Dead, based on the comic series he created.

Set to appear in 2015, the as-yet-untitled show will focus on a completely different set of characters in the zombie-infested apocalyptic world that has proven a hit for both comics and TV fans.

Kirkman had this to say on the proposed project:
“After ten years of writing the comic book series and being so close to the debut of our fourth, and in my opinion, best season of the TV series, I couldn’t be more thrilled about getting the chance to create a new corner of The Walking Dead universe”

It raises the point of whether people are going to be interested, with zombie related media reaching saturation point…

Basewood: A Work of Art from the Comics Underground

0

basewood-cvCartoonist Alec Longstreth’s Basewood is the tale of Ben. a young man who wakes up in a strange forest with no memory. Other characters in the story include a fearless young woman named Caren and a hermit named Argus who lives in the forest with his faithful dog. The forest is also home to a fearsome monster, the Wolfdragon.

Basewood was originally featured in Alec’s award winning indie comic Phase 7 and is a labour of love; the 204 pages taking seven years to complete. Drawn in a highly detailed cross-hatching style on oversized 18″x24″ boards. To demonstrate just how long this took Alec shaved his head and beard and then vowed not to cut either until he was finished.

The aim of the Kickstarter is to print the collected Basewood professionally in a format that will give readers the chance to see the painstaking effort, craft and detail put into every frame. This has only previously been available in a French edition.

The Kickstarter has already passed its initial target, anyone wanting to own a genuine piece of indie comics art has eleven days to make their pledge at the Basewood Kickstarter.
