EA just want to be loved

Electronic Arts Voted ‘Worst Company in America’ 2012/2013

After winning the unenviable title of ‘Worst Company in America’ for a second year running, EA boss Andrew Wilson and games label head Patrick Soderlund have come out publicly to discuss the company’s need to put their customers first, instead of short-term financials.

In a recent interview with Kotaku, the pair talked at length about the subject: ‘There are lots of really big public companies that make a lot of money that are loved by their consumers,’ Wilson acknowledged. ‘That’s because the consumers feel like they get value from that company in the investment in their dollars [and] time.’

According to Soderlund the consumerist poll really did give EA pause to think. ‘We started thinking about how we don’t want to be viewed as the worst company in America. I personally don’t think we’ve ever been the worst company in America, but it says something. The consumers out there are telling us something. And we actually took it very seriously.’

How Electronic Arts react to the news that they have been voted the ‘Worst Company in America’ for a second year running will be very interesting for gamers worldwide. Though Andrew Wilson and Patrick Soderlund’s words may just be plastering over giant cracks, if they didn’t change last year when they were labelled ‘Worst Company’ why would they change now when they are still making a profit?

Mike’s Magic Reviews: Hail Hydra!

Hello you wonderful Geek(ette)s and welcome to a brand new section of the rabbit hole that is  the Geek Pride site: Mike’s Magic Reviews, In which a bearded casual MTG player reviews whatever it is Wizards Of The Coast happen to throw his way (semi) weekly. Sort of. Kinda. Look, I’ll do my best get off my back. Jeez.

This week those wonderful wizards at…Wizards have sent me a challenge, with which I had a blast. Behold:

FACE THE HYDRA

Deck list: (Taken from MTGsalvation.com)

Main Deck 60 cards
0 lands

11 Hydra Head
4 Ravenous Brute Head
1 Savage Vigor Head
1 Snapping Fang Head
1 Shrieking Titan Head

5 Disorienting Glower
5 Distract the Hydra
4 Grown from the Stump
4 Hydra’s Impenetrable Hide
3 Neck Tangle
4 Noxious Hydra Breath
2 Strike the Weak Spot
5 Swallow the Hero Whole
4 Torn Between Heads
6 Unified Lunge

Initial thoughts:

This looks fun! Upon opening the box I had a real feel for what the deck would have to offer. The hydra seems like a really interesting gameplay style, relying on rushing the opponent and attacking their life force directly. This alone  excited me to continue on and play.

Play Test:

The game works thusly: you (and maybe some friends) face the Hydra; you pick a number of starting heads then attempt top destroy all of them. if you destroy them all, you win! there are a mix of sorceries and head-types in the deck, allowing for diversified play. and the greatest thing is that you do not even have to play with anyone else!

Great Against:

Going against this thing on your own is a great way to test your decks. it is challenging while remaining fun. You dread what’s coming from the hydra during its turn (you draw two cards at a time) and the whole game has a great atmosphere. it feels a lot more role-playey than other MTG gameplay styles

Graaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar
Graaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaar

Sucks against:

Easy is really easy, hard can be terrifying when playing alone

Room For Improvement:

This should become one of the standard games, such as commander etc. it was really fun to play, my only concern was that it was too short. you should double the amount of cards to make for a much longer game. other than that, a real innovation in game styles that you can test decks against on your own, or take on with friends. Good work!

Hunger Games costume auction!

0

It’s not every day that we’re given the chance to own a piece of cinematic history, so you can imagine my surprise when I saw that The Hunger Games were going to be auctioning off some costumes from the film, prior to the next instalment’s release!

Now I have to confess, these auctions aren’t for the faint hearted, and if you have even the remotest inclination towards owning one of the principal costumes such as Katniss’ Interview Dress, or any of Effie Trinket’s avant-garde offerings, be prepared to pay some seriously eye watering money – with bidding starting at over $10000 for some items.

Katniss' interview dress is just one of the items up for auction; with bidding starting at a staggering $10000!
Katniss’ interview dress is just one of the items up for auction; with bidding starting at a staggering $10000!

Yet for those of us not blessed with a bottomless bank account, the entire auction catalogue is available online and provides a great reference resource for any budding costumers or cosplayers out there eager to recreate one of their favourite looks.

The auction goes live on the 16th November, when more than 200 costumes hit the block, and the online catalogue is available here: So if you’re planning on bidding; may the odds be ever in your favour!

Kane & Lynch: The movie?

0
Kane & Lynch
Kane & Lynch

Arguably the worlds worst franchise, ‘Kane & Lynch’ looks to be on the way to being turned into a film. A series which should have disappeared after the first game looks set to role on.

Gerard Butler to play Kane?
Gerard Butler to play Kane?

Rumor has it that Gerard Butler has been approached to play Kane and there is talk that Vin Diesel is about to be sounded out to play Lynch. Whilst neither of these actors have actually signed upon the dotted line yet, the films director F. Gary Gray has worked with the pair in the past and it’s thought they may sign if the money is right.

But will the series make a better film than it ever did as a game? The short answer to this question is, ‘it couldn’t be any worse than the game itself.’

The psychotic duo playing nice
The psychotic duo playing nice

If your not familiar with the series, it is about a criminally psychotic duo who get broken out of prison by a criminal king-pin who sends them on missions which inevitably gets a lot of people killed. It seems doubtful that the script writers will venture far from the games format, hopefully it’ll be much better than it’s video game counterpart.

Another Wolverine Film?

The Wolverine: Second highest grossing X-Men film of All-Time
The Wolverine: Second highest grossing X-Men film of All-Time

Following the success of ‘The Wolverine’, director James Mangold has started negotiations with Twentieth Century Fox to produce a sequel.

Whilst the movie only did a respectable $132 million in America, it racked up $280 million on the international market. This makes ‘The Wolverine’ the second highest grossing X-Men franchise movie of all time.

At the time of writing this, negotiations are dealing with the details of Mangold writing a treatment (movie outline) with X-Men franchise producer Lauren Shuler Donner. Once this is complete, Mangold can choose his story and start writing, if this works out well things should move on quickly from there, toward filming.

Latest News, Pre-order Deals and More for The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds

0

10848407-1381856135-828205With November in full swing and less than three weeks to go until the eagerly anticipated new release in The Legend of Zelda series, Geek Pride are here to bring you the latest news, pre-order deals and information on limited edition goodies for the upcoming game.

Released on Friday 22nd November, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds follows on from the iconic 1992 SNES game A Link to The Past. The new game will be set in the same world as A Link to the Past but feature plenty of awesome new features.

The biggest of these is Link’s new ability to take on a 2D appearance as a ‘drawing’ which allows him to move along walls. This ability will be utilised to bring a whole new element to the game which will create plenty of new puzzles. Another key feature is the option to choose in which order you will tackle the dungeons, something new to the series. All of the items needed to tackle the separate dungeons will be available from a shop very early on in the game, allowing players to decide the order in which to complete them.

Now that I’ve given you a reminder of what to expect in A Link Between Worlds, let’s take a look at some of the fabulous things on offer when buying or pre-ordering the game; including a limited edition console, cool sleeve design and the cutest preoder freebie I’ve ever seen.

Limited Edition 3DS XL A Link Between Worlds Console

To celebrate the release of the new game, Nintendo have created an absolutely beautiful limited edition console. Available from the Nintendo Online Store for £199.99, this limited edition 3DS XL also comes with a download code for The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds. The console really is gorgeous, especially to huge Zelda fans such as myself. The top part and interior of the console are in the iconic gold colour, with the bottom half in black and a Triforce on each part. When the console is open, this gives the effect of a double Triforce, forming the logo of the game.

I’m already the proud owner of a lovely Pikachu 3DS XL, otherwise this would definitely be on my Christmas list! It really does have a great design, even more so than the console made available for the Ocarina of Time 3DS release. You can pre-order this awesome limited edition release at the link below.

Exclusive Pre-order Item

There was a really cute video posted recently on Nintendo’s Twitter showing Zelda overseer Eiji Aonuma unveiling the fabulous exclusive item being given away to folk pre-ordering the new game. If you missed it, Nintendo announced that anyone pre-ordering the new instalment through GAME will receive a cute musical chest that stores game cartridges. When you open the little chest it plays the classic tune associated with the game. Apparently you will also receive the item when pre-ordering through the Nintendo Store as well, so it’s worth taking a look as I’m sure stock won’t last. However, if you read on, you’ll see why I recommend pre-ordering through GAME. I’m absolutely in love with this little freebie, so if you’re going to buy the game I highly recommend pre-ordering a copy.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds Collector’s Edition – GAME Exclusive

267619_gen_aNow this is GAME’s collector’s edition of the upcoming game. At £49.99 it’s a little costly, but most places will be selling the game for between £32.99-39.99 anyway so it’s not much of a jump.

This edition guarantees one of the charming little musical chests, a boxed copy of the game, an exclusive poster and a download code for Link’s Awakening DX. Okay, the collector’s edition isn’t spectacular, but I’m a huge Zelda fan and I’ll definitely be pre-ordering a copy!

Nostalgic Reversible Game Cover

As a final treat for seasoned Zelda fans, The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds will come with a reversible game cover. One side will be the full colour version, but there will also be another which comes in the nostalgic gold colouring.  It’s not much, but it’s another cute feature that Nintendo are throwing at us.

Whether you’re a new to the series or a veteran, A Link Between Worlds promises to be a great release for all ages. Nintendo are definitely targeting the freebies and exclusive editions at folk familiar with the previous games and I think it’s a fabulous little bonus. Whatever your experience with The Legend of Zelda series, I highly recommend sticking A Link Between Worlds on your Christmas list! Hopefully Santa brings mine early…

Is it helpful or not? Sweden is determined to add a Bechdel test rating to the movies played in cinemas

0

mean-girls We’ve all heard of the Bechdel test, right? No? To be honest, I had no idea what it was until I stumbled onto a page about it on TV Tropes. But here’s the short version for you lazy bums that don’t feel like Googling: in order for a movie or TV series to pass the test, it must have at least two female characters, who have at least one conversation about anything other than a man or men in general. Whether they spend thirty minutes of the movie calling men pigs or discussing their daddy issues is irrelevant. The movie fails if they don’t chat about say,, Pizza (including toppings, sauces, but not the delivery boy), make-up or anything else not in possession of male reproductive organs.

A movie will pass the test even if it’s a horribly mysoginistic movie, because it’s not something that gives us, the viewers, an accurate account of the feminism levels of whatever it is that we’re seeing on screen: merely that the female characters have, for however long or short, thoughts that gravitate to something other than praising men, bashing men, describing men, and so on.

Sweden seems to want to take this a step further, and add a Bechdel Test rating to their movies. Is it useful? Is it merely a result of someone’s overly politically correct idea? Only time will tell, but given the apparent flaws of this test in itself or of the rating system that’s meant to suddenly teach us all how gender biased a movie is, I’m going to hold off on saying it’s a good idea. Say you’re a feminist, whether you’re male or female, and you decide to go to a movie theatre in Stockholm to see a movie that gets an A rating (which is a pass), only to be met with a movie that features two ditzy girls/women, in pursuit of happiness, that spend two hours doing nothing but lounge on a beach, chatting about the latest flavour of bubblegum. It’s not exactly what you would’ve expected from a movie that passed the test, mostly because it’s still a misunderstood tool.

The aim of this initiative is, supposedly, to “force” movie makers all around the world to change their views on the male to female ratio of protagonists of various films, bringing more positive and influential female characters to our screens, but will this be enough? Unless Sweden starts living by example, through making movies of their own that feature nothing but strong women, maybe they should stop casting stones at others? Not to mention that if they truly want to make a difference, maybe a different set of test batteries should be used?

For example: if they want to determine how influential, in a positive way, a movie can be for promoting female bigbangleads/characters, they could simply apply the Bechdel test and add a small test concerning just what the chat between the females consist of. If it’s nothing but mind numbing trivia concerning the Kardashians (without it being a parody of sorts), they should just fail the movie and move on. If it’s about something like curing cancer, cold fusion, their future careers or anything that requires a little more in terms of brain activity than counting on your fingers, it gets a pass with flying colours. (Though even that is iffy, given that the rest of the characters might be nothing but fans of tormenting women, treat them like garbage and so on).

Here’s a quote that I loved in the movie Seven Psycophats that can reference this situation quite well. (And yes, I know TV Tropes use it too, it’s just that good):
Hans: Your women characters are awful. None of them have anything to say for themselves, and most of them either get shot or stabbed to death within five minutes… and the ones that don’t probably will later on.
Marty: Well… it’s a hard world for women. You know? I guess that’s what I’m trying to say.
Hans: Yeah, it’s a hard world for women, but most of the ones I know can string a sentence together.
So, movie goers, movie makers, is this a good thing? Will it genuinely improve women’s standing in an industry so focused on male characters or will it simply slowly fizz out of existence? Only time will tell. Time and the internet, which apparently already had some vitriolic reactions to the news. Until then, happy viewing.

Marvel Announces New Ms Marvel

0

Since Carol Danvers promoted herself from Ms to Captain, there’s a perfectly good superhero name going unused. Enter Kamala Khan, a Pakistani-American teenager with shapeshifting abilities, set to take up the Ms Marvel name. However, not content with merely introducing a Muslim character to an existing series (like X-Factor’s Monet and Wolverine and the X-Men’s Dust) Kamala Khan is set to headline her very own series, with G Willow Wilson writing, and art by Adrian Alphona.

ms-marvel-1-cover

So, what do we know about this mysterious Ms Marvel? Well, according to Wilson, “Captain Marvel represents an ideal that Kamala pines for. She’s strong, beautiful, and doesn’t have any of the baggage of being Pakistani and ‘different’.”

The new Ms Marvel series will debut in February 2014, but fans wanting a sneak preview can check out the Point One Special in January.
