WWE 2K14 Review

0

It’s that time of year again.

Another year, another yearly instalment in the series of grapplers based on Vince McMahon’s ever-popular pro wrestling monopoly. However in the run up to this year’s game a few potentially interesting things have changed. THQ are now out of the picture, going bankrupt last year, and now 2K Games, a company rather familiar with sports games, has entered the fray. This surprise purchase, along with the push by WWE to market themselves more heavily and reach out to former stars has led to more of a buzz surrounding this game than perhaps even last year’s CM Punk and Attitude era-driven outing.

One myth that must be dispelled right away is how different this actually makes the core game. Yuke’s creators of the last fifteen games in the Exciting Pro Wrestling series are still firmly in the driver’s seat, and the fundamental mechanics are not overly changed from the previous game… which was slightly modified from the game before that and so on. If you have played any of the WWE Smackdown games this will not feel overly different. You have strikes, grapples which lead into throws, running moves and a few other situational set pieces in which to set up moves, and also the ability to reverse anything if you get the timing right. This does mean there is somewhat more refinement in those mechanics though, which is a definite plus.

The movement and animations are all faster than in previous games, leading to less of the dull dragged out slugfests that played the later Smackdown vs Raw games, settling as a kind of mix between the extremes. It is better, but there are still fundamental problems, like endless stalemates when reversing (which becomes a lot more problematic on higher difficulty levels), spamming runningstrikes is still a viable tactic despite the attempts made to change that (so online multiplayer is probably a no-go outside of playing like minded friends) and there are some other issues with move selection and registering grapples which at this point it is fair to suggest are fundamental parts of the engine.

30 Years of Wrestlemania Allows You to Recreate Legendary Matches Like Above

The other half of 30 Years is the Streak Mode, which lets you go one on one with the Undertaker, or take out the entire roster as Undie, whichever floats your boat. Defeating the Streak puts you in one of the hardest one on one matches in the series, with Undertaker being as insanely tough as he seems to get during his recent Wrestlemania main events. Defend the Streak is more like the old Slobberknocker mode from the early Smackdown games, where you face a huge number of wrestlers in succession, who start off so weak that a stiff breeze will score you a KO victory but eventually they get stronger, and the injuries take their toll to the point that even Big John Studd can get a submission victory on you. Like most survival modes, there is an odd excitement and tension to seeing just how many finishers you can last before finally giving up the ghost.

Finally, after all the 20+ hours of content provided by 30 Years you get the WWE Universe mode and the create modes, which have received nominal improvements. Universe mode, a less rigidly defined version of the Season Modes of old, has now been revamped to include rivalry options, which grants the option to create feuds leading up to big money Pay Per View matches, as well as the usual options to move titles and change matches and match types on a whim. No inexplicable simulation bars like in Smackdown 2 though.

Finally, you’ve got the creative suite, which allows you to create wrestlers, move sets, entrances, teams and about a dozen other things. It’s all updated very slightly, and will probably provide the longest lasting appeal to the hard core. There is slightly more of everything, and of course any gaps left will be fixed in the inevitable DLC.

Speaking of that elephant in the room. There is a veritable ton of DLC, not even including the pre-order bonuses or the limited editions, so if you absolutely need more wrestlers than the 90+ already available, then the Season Pass is probably the way to go. On the other hand, if all you need is Wrestling Superstar Virgil, then he’s free to download.

The general problem with this game is complacency. WWE is a pro wrestling monopoly, and this is very much represented by the complacency of this latest offering. There is more stuff, and what’s there is good and well presented, but the fundamental problems with Yuke’s game design are still there and won’t go away because there’s no need. If you’re a pro wrestling fan, you either already have this or have no choice but to get it if you want a pro wrestling game this year. That said, this game more than any other of WWE’s offerings lately is probably worth a look even as a non fan, by virtue of its sheer amount of content out of the box and simply being pretty fun if you don’t play it too long or think about it too hard.

In other words, it’s just like WWE’s programming right now.

Judge Dredd fan project Cursed Edge prog 1 debuts.

0

Whilst fans of Dredd wait and pray to the fickle gods of filmland for a sequel to the amazing Dredd, the first episode, or ‘prog,’ of Cursed Edge, the long-gestating fan project which serves as a follow up to the acclaimed film, has made its debut.965160_460467810703821_2020426993_o

A labour of love for writer/director Oliver Holingdale, Cursed Edge is set in the same world as the film. Despite a budget of nothing, it manages to throw in nods to the source material, and has impressive visuals. The Mega City One here is arguably more in fitting with Judge Dredd’s 2000AD home than the acclaimed film starring Karl Urban: lurid neon lights dominate the landscape of the Pleasure District as a working girl sets off to meet a client and things get messy.

This first prog was introduced with the following statement on their Facebook Page
Ladies and Gentlemen,

Here is the very first Episode of Cursed Edge! There will be around 6 in total, spanning approx. 10 minutes each, This has been a big challenge trying to materialise and to make these episodes with 0 funds but this will not stop us from trying our best.

We hope you enjoy and continue to support our aims to help the alertness of getting a Dredd sequel. We could not do this with out all your help and hope you continue to support Cursed Edge.

Table Forged Relaunches ‘Iron & Ale’ Kickstarter Campaign

Do you long for a Dwarven Drinking Card Game where you Mine, Fight Monsters and Challenge your Friends to Real Dwarven Feats of Strength? Me too!

ironale steins

Then it’s a good job Table Forged have relaunched ‘Iron & Ale’ via Kickstarter.

“Iron & Ale is 100% Dwarf. It is a game of mining, fighting monsters, drinking and dwarven challenges. You are a Dwarven Lord challenging other players to become the true Dwarven King. To do this you must lead your clan to conquer the mountain and challenge other Dwarven Lords at the Meadhall. The Dwarven Lord with the most honor when the Mountain Deck is depleted wins.”

mountain cards

The mountain is made up of 100 cards filled with monsters, iron ore and gold. Sworn Dwarven enemies, such as Orc tribes, Giants, Trolls, the Legendary Dragon and more lurk in the mountain deck. During the Mountain Phase each player draws one card, exploring and mining the mountain. Every kill, every resource brings honor to your clan.

After you draw a card from the Mountain, you draw a card from the Meadhall Deck. The Meadhall is where you drink and challenge the other Dwarven Lords for honor in feats of strength and skill. The Meadhall deck is made up of 30 Dwarven Challenges and 10 Dwarven Folly cards.

All challenges are 100% dwarf and will prove your Dwarven worth. Dwarven Lords are encouraged to place wages using any honor or resources they’ve gained before the challenges start.

You can check out a game of Iron & Ale being played in the video below and don’t forget to take a look at the Kickstarter here

Rodriguez Announces From Dusk Till Dawn TV Series

What's in Mexico? Mexicans.
What’s in Mexico? Mexicans.

From Dusk Till Dawn, an intense and hilarious 90s crime caper-meets-B-Movie supernatural splatgorefest, is coming to serialised TV format, Robert Rodriguez (the film’s director and co-creator along with Quentin Tarantino) has said.

From Dusk Till Dawn's creators.
”If the movie’s the short story, the series is the novel. We have assembled an amazing cast and crew, and viewers can expect to be part of a wild ride when the series premieres on El Rey Network.” – Rodriguez
El Rey Network is a 24-hour network founded by Rodriguez. It will feature original dramas, feature films, horror, sci-fi and “next-generation sports”, whatever they are. The name comes from the town that Seth (George Clooney) and Richard (Quentin Tarantino) Gecko were to escape to in the film: a corrupt hellhole where people generally lived off their ill-gotten gains in seclusion, and then drug or alcohol-fuelled oblivion.

Hopefully, the TV channel will have better luck and churn out original greatness.

DJ Cotrona (GI Joe: Retaliation) and Zane Holtz (The Perks of Being a Wallflower) will star in the forthcoming TV series. Jesse Garcia (Sons of Anarchy) has been mentioned as the new character Texas Ranger Freddie Gonzalez, and Don Johnson will take the recurring role of Sheriff Earl McGraw, the role played by Michael Parks played in the original film, as well as Kill Bill, Grindhouse, Planet Terror and Deathproof.

Danny Trejo has suggested that he’ll return as the bartender. There is no word yet on whether Cheech Marin will play everyone else in the series (here’s hoping he plays Satanico Pandemonium, at least).

Best in Mexico.

The new network will debut in the US in December, and the series will air there in Spring 2014. No UK channels have picked it up yet, so who knows? It could end up as another Netflix exclusive.

Thor: The Dark World

thor tdww

Thor: The Dark World is the first solo adventure with Thor since The Avengers film last year, however he’s not completely alone as we see him reunited with Jane, his sidekick warriors and that pesky brother of his; Loki (Tom Hiddleston). In this adventure we see Thor having to battle a villain so ruthless that even his mighty father Odin (Anthony Hopkins) cannot win, resulting in Thor asking for help from the person you’d last expect…well maybe not last expect (especially if you’ve seen the trailer).

malekith

The villain comes in the form of Malekith, leader of the Dark Elves and played by the great Christopher Eccleston, who wants to return the universe to a state of darkness using a powerful force called the Aether. Although Odin was led to believe that the Aether had been destroyed by his father, it becomes apparent that this was not the case and this is where Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) surprisingly becomes tangled in the tale. Thor must protect not only the ones he loves but his city and universe (that’s a lot of responsibility!). There are some great battle scenes and stunning visuals. Without giving too much away, prepare for action, tears, laughs and unexpected twists.

thorr

I actually loved Thor: The Dark World. I had prepared myself for some disappointment after seeing its rating on a cinema chain’s website but it surpassed my expectations. I have found in past Marvel films that the humour has been quite cheesy but I absolutely loved it in Thor. It’s far funnier than the first and Darcy (Kat Dennings) shines with her witty remarks again. There was a lot more comedy than I was expecting and some of the Loki and Thor parts scarily reflect sibling bickering.

In hindsight, Malekith should have been given more screentime. He seems to be the second-in-line villain behind Loki who steals a lot of the limelight even though he’s not who Thor is fighting against. There could have also been more filling out of the love story between Jane and Thor, which still seems a little thin especially for all the time she’s been waiting to see him again (although I can’t really blame her).

Finally, the film runs at around 112 minutes and I wonder whether a little more length could have added a bit more depth that some times it lacks.

thor2

All in all, if you are a fan of comic book films, I would urge you to head to your local cinema and watch this because as sequels go, they did a great job with it and I’m already looking forward to watch it again – and not just because of beautiful Thor.

P.s Remember to stay for the mid-credits and end of credits scene!

Konami Announce Release Date for Prologue to Metal Gear Solid V

Anatomy of a Fall: MGS V to be Released in Two Parts.

Konami’s official blog has announced that Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes will be released in Spring 2014. This appears to confirm rumours that the game would in fact be released in two parts, with The Phantom Pain coming later in the year.

The status of the game has remained seemingly in deliberate and eternal flux since its announcement as two completely separate games in 2011, with Ground Zeroes being a prequel to The Phantom Pain’s weirdness. What form this will take is still unclear: whether it will be a full release title, or a cheaper extended demo of sorts, much like Dead Rising 2: Case Zero. Konami have been somewhat cryptic on this issue, touting it as an “introduction to open world design”. This, of course, doesn’t rule out the potential for some kind of complete pack or special edition.

Konami has Shed Some Light On Big Boss’ Final Adventure

The other main confirmation is that the game will be released for both current and next-gen systems, with support for the Playstation 3, Xbox 360, Playstation 4 and Xbox One confirmed. This suggests the rumoured PC port may not be happening, which is a trifle disappointing for PC gamers. However, given the amazing grunt of the FOX engine already shown through the trailers and screenshots, if they can maintain a consistent frame rate, it might be a fantastic benchmark for the new systems.

While it’s a bit disappointing that the whole story won’t be in a neat bundle like Metal Gear Solid 2, this does perhaps suggest that we’re in for a massive experience, one I cannot wait to get my greasy tactical espionage mitts on!

Doctor Who Enemies: The Master

First Appearance: Terror of the Autons (1971)

First Actor: Roger Delgado

The first master

The Doctor has had several high-profile enemies, but possibly not one more dangerous than ‘The Master’. The brainchild of the first creative team, headed up by producer Barry Letts and script editor Terrance Dicks who both deliberately choose his title as ‘The Master’. They believed that it was evocative of super-villain names in fiction, but primarily because like the Doctor, it was a title conferred by an academic degree.

From Left to Right: Derek Jacobi, Peter Pratt, Roger Delgado, John Simm, Eric Roberts and Anthony Ainley
From Left to Right: Derek Jacobi, Peter Pratt, Roger Delgado, John Simm, Eric Roberts and Anthony Ainley

He was created to be the Doctor’s ‘Professor Moriarty’, somebody who was the Doctor’s intellectual equal. Just like the Doctor he is also a Time Lord, with the ability to regenerate. He has been played by many great actors such as Peter Pratts, Eric Roberts and Derek Jacobi but will be most well known by the ‘New-Generation’ of Who fans as John Simm (Life on Mars).

Driven insane looking into the Untempered Schism
Driven insane looking into the Untempered Schism

John Simm’s portrayal of The Master was as far removed from Roger Delgado’s as Matt Smith’s portrayal of the Doctor was from William Hartnall (the first doctor). Simm showed a different Master from what the old hands are used to, eccentric, able to make light of a situation yet quite insane. Driven to insanity after staring into the ‘Untempered Schism’.

Davros, the Daleks, the Cybermen and even the Sontaran’s are all formidable foes, but none can hold a candle to The Master. For this reason Doctor Who fans should be hoping that he comes back somewhere down the line, for what is Sherlock Holmes, without his Moriarty?

Cinema uses fan-made Thor poster

0

At a cinema in Shanghai instead of using an official poster to promote the new Thor film (Thor: The Dark World), they instead ended up with a fan-made photo-shopped poster causing much amusement among fans and geeks alike.

Thor-Loki-Poster

The poster, believed to be a fan’s Photoshop creation, shows the brothers in a titanic style embrace looking very happy together. In a recent London interview Chris Hemsworth did have this to say. ‘From the beginning we were lucky, We just had a chemistry and the same kind of enthusiasm.’

Could this all just be a sneak peek at Thor 3? The brothers re-united in a romantic comedy, it could work.

Marvel + Netflix = OMGYAY!

0

Netflix, not content with reviving cult show Arrested Development, and Marvel, not content with their ambitious movie universe, have teamed up to produce the world’s loudest fangasm: four shows revolving round Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist, to eventually culminate in a Defenders mini-series that will bring the four together. According to Marvel:
..the epic will unfold over multiple years of original programming, taking Netflix members deep into the gritty world of heroes and villains of Hell’s Kitchen, New York.  Netflix has committed to a minimum of four, thirteen episodes series and a culminating Marvel’s “The Defenders” mini-series event that reimagines a dream team of self-sacrificing, heroic characters.

OMGSQUEE

Even if it does break my heart that uber-bros Luke and Danny aren’t combined into a buddy-cop/film noir Heroes for Hire series, I’m pretty freaking excited about this. Separating the four characters into completely solo arcs seems at first like it will turn out like DC/CW’s Arrow (25% excellence, 75% worthless love triangle) but keeping it brief -for a US show at least- at 13 episodes each, with a clear team-up point, definitely seems like they’ve thought this through.

Guess it’s time for me to get Netflix, huh?
