Quentin Tarantino’s New Western: Title Revealed

0

quentin-tarantino-imageFollowing the success of Django Unchained last year Quentin Tarantino has announced that his next project will be another Western entitled The Hateful Eight.

Multiple media outlets are reporting that Tarantino has finished a screenplay for the project, which he first announced would be another Western during an appearance on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno in November.

“I haven’t told anyone this publicly”, Tarantino said, “but I will say the genre: it’s a western. I had so much fun doing Django, and I love westerns so much that after I taught myself how to make one, it’s like ‘OK! Let me make another one now that I know what I’m doing.’”

christopher-waltz-jamie-foxx-django-unchainedDjango Unchained earned Tarantino his second Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, as well as winning Christoph Waltz his second Best Supporting Actor Oscar.

The influence of the Western has been prevalent throughout Tarantino’s directorial career, with tropes such as the Mexican Standoff playing an important part in early successes Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction, and Ennio Morricone soundtracks setting the mood in the Kill Bill movies and Inglorious Basterds.

While no details of the plot have been announced, the title of this movie makes us at Geek Pride wonder whether Tarantino’s love of the genre may have inspired him to make an ensemble piece in the manner of The Magnificent Seven or The Wild Bunch. With that in mind our ears are firmly rooted to the ground awaiting news of casting for The Hateful Eight.

Peter Parker Returns!

0

For those with amnesia, Marvel killed off Peter Parker back in December 2012, and replaced him with a more-or-less heroic Doc Ock in Peter Parker’s body, who has been headlining his own Superior Spider-Man series ever since.

Whilst Superior Spider-Man has gone on to become Marvel’s top-selling title with its own army of loyal fans, as time wears on it becomes less and less likely that Doc Ock could get away with being a colossal douche without somebody noticing that Peter would never behave that way. I mean, what would Aunt May think?

(Wait, didn’t Aunt May and Doc Ock almost get married way back, and now he’s wearing her nephew like a human cosplay? Ew.)

Anyhoo, we can expect The Amazing Spider-Man #1 to arrive in April this year, but that’s all we know so far. No word on how Peter will come back- though I’d guess the fact that the Amazing X-Men are currently having adventures in the afterlife with their deceased friends Nightcrawler and Professor X may play a part.

We all knew he wouldn’t stay dead, but hearing that Peter Parker is returning to the Spidey-suit (and his body) is awesome news for any Spider-fan. Especially this one- now I can take down my mourning shrine!

X-Men: Days of Future Past – New pictures of Quicksilver, Bishop & more

0

This week there has been a good one for X-fans excited about the next X-Men film – Days of Future Past, which I will now refer to as DOFP, because it’s easier.

This week has seen with the first look at Quicksilver. This character is to appear in both DOFP and also Avengers: Age of Ultron, but to be played by two different actors. The rights fall into the grey area because although they are mutants, they have both been active members of The Avengers, this means, in very simple terms, both studios can use them.

Quicksilver in DOFP is to be played by Evan Peters; a relatively unknown actor who has done stint on One Tree Hill and more recently American Horror Story, but you probably recognisable him as Todd from Kick Ass. It is a little disappointing that the first look at this character is a set shot where we can barely see him, all I can really say is that it would appear he is wearing silver and has the white hair that Pietro Maximoff is known for, yep that’s about it, although the picture also begs the questions – how is Xavier walking now?

x-men-days-of-future-past-quicksilver

Thankfully our first proper look at Omar Sy’s Bishop is definitely more satisfying and in my humble opinion, spot on. Love the red cape and just look at the size of that gun!

Entertainment Weekly also released this image of Wolverine and Beast, who, in all honesty, look like they have just been caught doing something they shouldn’t be.

It’s okay though because in this next image, Beast looks like he is kicking a little Magneto ass.

The film, which Bryan Singer refers to as an “inbetweequel”, is due for release 23rd May 2014.

Do you think this classic story arc can be successfully brought to the big screen? Which character are you most looking forward to seeing? As  always leave your comments below.

The Simpsons celebrate the work of Miyazaki & Studio Ghibli

0

The Simpsons have been on air a long time – I recently read that has Bart aged normally, by now he would be 34 which is quite a scary thought. In order to keep the show as fresh the makers have, through the years, included nods to our many a cultural icon.  Back in October The Simpsons opening sequence for Tree House of Horrors XXIV  was directed by and dedicated to the monstrous works of Guillermo del Toro.

Now it is the turn of anime legend Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli , creators of classic anime classics such as Totoro, Sprited Away and a personal favourite, Howl’s Moving Castle. Back in September Miyazaki announced his retirement from film making, much to the disappointment of many a fan. Therefore, it seems fitting that one iconic animation acknowledges and gives a nod to another.

From the episode ‘Married to the Blob’, Comic Book Guy attempts to date a Japanese woman who is writing an autobiographical manga comic. During this episode Homer drinks “snake wine” resulting in hallucinations and a trip through the world of Miyazaki mixed with some of our favourite Simpsons characters. The tribute can be viewed below with the entire episode airing in the US this Sunday.

2013 was a great year for science. This year is starting off quite nicely as well. We have already made progress through time and space. Let’s take a look shall we?

Leatherback Turtle

Ancient sea creatures had a colour… Grey.

Who would have guessed? The modern day Leatherback Turtle is likely using the same capabilities as their ancient ancestors. These turtles require heat in order to survive and in some cases that is difficult to find in certain regions of the oceans. After discovering fossilized soft tissue containing pigment, scientists and artists have determined that these creatures, including the ichthyosaur and mosasaur, very likely possessed a grey or black pigment. This would allow them to attract the suns rays and warm up in colder climates. The pigment also can warn predators of a fatal poison if ingested as a defense mechanism for the prey. If you would like to learn more about the process or the species talked about in this section, here is a nice little link to the original article. http://www.iflscience.com/plants-and-animals/true-color-ancient-sea-creatures-revealed-fossilized-pigment

Ancient skull is more human than apelike.

Does everyone know who ‘Ardi’ is? Probably not. The Ardi skull was discovered/revealed in 2009. It is not as commonly known as ‘Lucy’, the greatly preserved and fossilized link in evolution that became famous decades ago. Ardi is a 4.4 million year old female from the Ardipithecus ramidus. There was much controversy over her place in the human evolution chain. After amazing research led by William Kimbel of Arizona State University, some of the debate is over. With a mashup of features, Ardi was a very confusing subject. She possessed traits from both ape and human, making the research difficult and debatable. The research team recently released evidence showing that the skull of this distant relative had more human traits. The evidence is indicative of partial bipedality.

ardipithecus-ramidus

Now how can we determine how something walked just by looking at a skull? Well in bipedal creatures, the skull and the spine connect at the bottom allowing for us to look forward while walking and standing upright. The connectivity of the spine, nerves and blood vessels are more human like as well. In quadrupeds, the skull is shaped differently to allow for comfortable eating while standing. At this point in the research, Ardi is the oldest known hominin discovered to date. The original article has some great links to further research on the subject and can be found here:

Aurora Borealis visible in the lower latitudes

Due to a solar flare that occurred on the 8th of January 2014, the Aurora Borealis were visible in several of the lower latitudes last night and into the early morning. The state of Colorado in the U.S. (39° 44′ 21″ N in Denver) rarely ever gets to see this amazing natural wonder. That being my home state, I am thoroughly disappointed that I was not there to see this phenomenon. Seeing the Aurorae is at the top of my bucket list.

AuroraBorealis

The solar flare that caused this awesome and rare sight was class X1. This was a pretty big one, but there is nothing to worry about. Scientist are saying that it happens more often than the public notices and even though it causes a burst of radiation, we are all still safe and should enjoy the visual spectacle that Mother Nature creates. The flare itself was a pretty fast one clocking in at 2000 kilometers a second. (Holy cow!) I am extremely jealous if you were one of the many thousands (if not millions) that got to witness this display.

Daenerys of The House Targaryen is a slug

I suppose I should elaborate before anyone gets too worked up. A recently discovered species of sea slug has been named Tritonia khaleesi. Researchers observed the pale plumes of the slug and saw a distinct resemblance between them and the blond braids sported by Daenerys of The House Targaryen, First of Her Name, Queen of The Andals and The First Men, Lady Regent of the Seven Kingdoms, Mother of Dragons, Breaker of chains, and Queen of the Great Grass Sea.

Some might believe that due to this reference the slugs would have extremely long plumes. This is not the case. The plumes themselves are short. The researcher studying these slugs, Felipe de Vasconcelos Silva, has been quoted from his paper stating, “internally, T. khaleesi sp. nov. is distinguished from other tritoniids by jaws with 10–14 rows of denticles on the inner lips, absence of stomach plates and the radular formula 32 × 2–5.1.1.1.2–5 teeth.” It is known.

Unfortunately, they are charging for access to the actual paper/article he wrote but in case you have a huge passion for sea slugs here is the link to where you can purchase it for $45.00.

Free Film Friday – His Girl Friday

Ah, that satisfying moment when the title of the film and the title of the blog sync up a little.

Hello everybody and welcome back to Free Film Friday, your weekly exploration of the public domain. When you’ve had a long, hard week, I hope you can find some relief in a slice of cinema which is completely free to watch without infringing any copyright laws. I wanted to bring you something really special for this first post of the new year and to my surprise I found that one of the all time great Hollywood comedies is sitting right there in the public domain for all of us to enjoy.

His Girl Friday came out in 1940 but is still as dazzlingly funny a comedy today as it was then. A lot of this is down to a superb combination of dialogue and timing. Leads Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell bounce off each other in a display of extraordinary screen chemistry, and in an effort to make their speech more realistic there is a lot of overlapping and cutting each other off, giving the film a vibrant pace. What I like about this movie is the spectacle of grand farce which it exudes despite the story and the setting being fairly realistic. That is all down to the suave and playful nature of the leading characters. They have a witty answer for every situation, and their most cutting remarks are saved for each other.

There are a couple of geeky reasons for the significance of this film. On a pure comedy basis, there are a couple of naughty in-jokes from Cary Grant which will provide the eagle-eyed cinema connoisseur with a chuckle. But more intriguingly, this quite brilliant comedy also proved to be an influence on another great genre of the day.

his-girl-friday_l

Throughout the 1930s the Noir genre was undergoing genesis through various early Hollywood prototypes as well as in the German Expressionist Movement. Howard Hawks, the director of His Girl Friday would go on to direct archetypal Noir The Big Sleep in 1946, a film which featured a trademark known as the “Hawksian Woman”. Defined as a strong female character who is more than capable of holding her own and even displaying dominance against her male counterparts, the Hawksian Woman shares many traits with the Femme Fatale of Noir tradition. Rosalind Russell’s character in His Girl Friday is a Hawksian Woman, and in many ways Russell’s performance in this film can be counted among the early pieces of the Noir genesis which would culminate with the release of the 1941 archetypes Citizen Kane, Suspicion and The Maltese Falcon.

Much of Hawks’ influence on contemporary cinema can be seen in this film as well. Contrast the quick witted and frenetic dialogue of His Girl Friday with the way that characters converse with each other in a Tarantino movie for example. Also, am I the only one that found ironic humour in the film’s opening titles, especially in light of what we have been discovering about journalism during the last couple of years?

hgf

All analysis and my own personal geekery aside, I invite you to watch this film because it really is a great laugh. I think you’ll enjoy this and if you don’t, well hell it was free! See you next week!

The evolution of the smartphone and tablet computers has had a significant knock-on effect on business enterprises around the world. Mobile technology has made business operations appreciably more streamlined, with employees and partners able to access vital business documents and communication far easier and more immediate.

Business security, particularly with information, doesn’t necessarily stop with email archiving <http://www.mimecast.com>. With increased reliance on mobile technology come increased security risks. If your company employs a BYOD policy, it’s vital that your staff is keyed in on the necessary safety procedures.

Data security companies like Mimecast may provide a lot of protection from cyber criminals, but human error still contributes a lot in exposing your business to various threats. Make sure that you and your business do not fall into this category.

Protect your texts

A lot of mobile tech users tend to assume that the security threats that exist on the internet with laptops and desktops don’t apply to mobile devices. Of course, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Therefore, it’s important, along with the help Mimecast offer, to use smartphone and tablet technology safely, particularly in a business context.

Important Announcement From The Interstellar Safety Council

In this very informative public service announcement creator, Tom Scott, takes a look at the threat our very species poses to all those alien life forms we’re hoping are hanging out in deep space. With abilities such as “…extra skeletal protrusions designed to crush tear and rip almost any organic material” and our “most startling capability” being “self delusion” it becomes very clear that we are to be feared. Indeed, one of the greatest threats to other space dwelling lifeforms is humans. Run fools!

Why series about immortal characters should never last more than three seasons…

0

...without a cast turnover or them being turned mortals.

Now this isn’t the first time this issue is addressed. I’m sure of that. Well, if I had done some research, I’m sure I could’ve said I’m certain, but let’s not dwell on that. *Studies have shown that TV series about immortal characters, whether vampires, aliens, angels, demons/any other creature that somehow has managed to cheat death for centuries/millennia, should never last longer than three seasons. Why, you ask?

Here’s a hint. Because in real life, all of the actors and actresses portraying said characters are (do prepare yourselves to be shocked!) very much human. I’ve been a fan of several shows where immortality was one of the main ingredient. Vampires, angels, you name it, those shows had them in spades. It’s amazing for the first couple of years, until the supposedly immortal (who by the series definition, unchanging in physical appearance) character begins to change. Hair can be dyed, wrinkles can be covered up with make-up (or botox, I don’t judge), but you can’t change or stop the maturing process that comes with age. Being stuck in a certain role for a decade doesn’t stunt your actual physical development. And there’s nothing wrong with that. People age, kids grow up, we are all aware of this, or at least I hope we are. But that should also reflect in the nature of their work.

A show of hands from those that have seen Charmed. If you haven’t, do give it a try, it’s actually rather good. Except, it lasted for over nine years and all the immortal characters were obviously changing before our very eyes. A marathon showed that more so than anything else. I’m perfectly comfortable of suspending disbelief when watching something, because the acting was good enough to make me less worried about the fact that the whitelighters had obviously “grown-up”, but I am less inclied to do so when a thirty something year old is still forced into the mold of a high-school student. That’s mostly an American trend, admittedly, but it actually made me wonder if everyone in the schools from the US look like they could legally purchase alcohol. I mean, seriously, would you card a guy that looks like John Bender in The Breakfast Club? Why are fake IDs even necessary since they can all grow beards?

3x04-Leo   & 8 years later     7x03-Leo

Most of the vampire series that are currently on TV had been guilty of this, with actors and actresses way in their thirties still playing seventeen. It would work if they looked even marginally in their late teens, yet most of them don’t. To keep from being mean, by all means, do go on with the show, but maybe have a cast turn-over? Or have the characters graduate? It’s been known to happen, yet sometimes it isn’t fast enough for credibility of the role to be maintained.

I am aware that most of the casting is done for convenience’s sake. You can’t hire kids because it limits their work hours and there are different laws and so on (not to mention that *gasp* they too will eventually grow up). But if that’s the case, don’t spread out your show until your cast turns forty, while we’re being repeatedly told that they are twenty or twenty five. A change in the shows’s mythology goes a long way.

250px-822679_1315066957872_fullThis is the type of thing that alters our perception of age. I didn’t notice it before I grew up a little myself, but let’s face it. If people start to believe that this is how seventeen years old are supposed to look like, a lot of high-school aged girls are going to be severely disappointed, not to mention the guys will end up with self-esteem issues. Not to mention the many times I’ve seen people being insulted for “looking old”, even when they actually looked their own age. Keep in mind that not everyone that’s fifty will “keep” as well as Johnny Depp or Brad Pitt. Aging is normal, but trying to pretend it doesn’t exist is…slightly damaging.

That’s not to say I didn’t dream about being young forever and maybe it’s why we allow ourselves to pretend we simply don’t see that growing up happens on TV as well, but I’m a nitpicker from time to time and this is one of my personal pet-peeves about supernatural shows.

(hint – the guy in this picture? Not seventeen.)

Marvel Chess Collection Review

Publisher: Eaglemoss Collections

You can pretty much guarantee that at any point, if someone mentions the magic word “Marvel” my ears prick up, and you have my full attention. Don’t get me wrong, I love most comic books and graphic novels, but there’s something about the Marvel universe that just gets me. I don’t know if it’s the artwork, the depth and variety of characters or the recent movies that have hooked me so well, but they have me.

Marvel Chess Collection Header

So a new fortnightly magazine allowing you to collect a complete chess set, with each piece being a character from the Marvel universe has come out… and I’m all over it like a fanboy rash.

I’d like to say this is the first bi-weekly periodical I’ve been suckered into, but nope. Someone mentioned “Marvel” at me before with Marvel Fact Files… so I have all of those too. The Marvel Chess Collection is published by Eaglemoss as well as Fact Files, so they’re really fleecing my bank account at the moment!

So what do you get for your hard-earned cash with the MCC? Well, the basic collector (ie non-subscriber) will be able to purchase each issue, complete with a new piece to add to their collection. To clarify, all the pieces are totally different. The pawns aren’t all one character, and there aren’t two of the same character for rooks, bishops and knights. The first issue comes with Spider-Man, who is the white knight.

Spider-Man Chess Piece
A good quality figure

Each piece is made of a high-quality lead-free metallic resin, and they’re fairly weightly and robust. The first piece will look familiar if you also got the Fact Files issues from Eaglemoss, as Spidey’s pose is identical to the statue from that set. This is a little disappointing, and I instantly thought that each one will be a carbon copy of the statues you got with MFF. Thankfully this isn’t the case. All the other figures I’ve seen so far have different poses and styles.

Each figure stands atop a circular base just over an inch tall, the figures themselves are about 4 inches tall, depending on the pose they’re pulling (Captain America and Red Skull both hold their weapons of choice over their heads), and they’re painted pretty well. The bases are all almost identical, save for some slight differences. They all have their respective player emblems (knight, rook etc) on the bases, and the heroes’ ones are all a metallic steel colour. The only difference the villains’ bases have is that they have a slight bronze tinge to them.

So… is your favourite hero or villain included in the set? Well here’s an idea of some of the characters included for each side;

Heroes:

Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, Hawkeye, Black Widow, Ant Man, The Wasp, Luke Cage & Daredevil – Pawns

Spider-Man & Wolverine – Knights

Iron Man & Thor – Bishops

Black Panther & The Vision – Rooks

Captain America – King

Captain Marvel – Queen

Villains

Lizard, Shocker, Taskmaster, Molecule Man, Klaw, Bullseye, Absorbing Man & Venom – Pawns

Doc Ock & Green Goblin – Knights

Loki & Mandarin – Bishops

Ultron & Kang – Rooks

Red Skull – King

Viper – Queen

This character list is taken from the website that the collection links to (http://www.marvel-chess.com/), however if I look inside the cover of the first issue, there’s a completely different list of hero characters there, with different rooks (Silver Surfer & Hawkeye), Black Widow as the queen, and the pawns are Daredevil, Deadpool, Iceman, Beast, Elektra, Ghost Rider, Storm and Spider-Woman.

Now, if the website character list is accurate, then I’m not sure about some of the choices – there’s a fair few I’m not familiar with (Molecule Man, Absorbing Man), and if this is a way to introduce people into the Marvel world, they should’ve chosen more recognisable people. There’s no Hulk, Carnage, Sandman, Abomination, Rhino, Deadpool (a travesty!). There’s a distinct lack of X-men and there’s only 5 women in the set. You can pay extra as part of one of the subscription models, and get alternative pieces in the form of the Fantastic Four, but this is a little weak in my opinion.

If the character list on the inside cover of issue one is anything to go by, this is a bit more balanced, and much more recognisable for comicbook geeks and newcomers alike. Unfortunately it’s hard to tell which one is the right one. However I know that with the Marvel Fact Files, there would often be “specials” that focus on a particular character – Wolverine, Thor, Doctor Doom etc. I think it’s a pretty safe bet that we’ll get more interchangeable sets that incorporate other characters, which is probably where these differences in cast lists are coming from. For now, we’ll have to wait and see.

Marvel Chess Collection
Decent design, with good content

The Magazine

The Marvel Chess Collection magazine itself is a well-printed and beautifully-designed piece of work. You get a good introductory history of the character in question – issue one going into Peter Parker’s humble beginnings, and developing into the angst-ridden hero we have today. (Well not quite up to the present Marvel One issues) It goes into little bits like Doc Ock and Aunt May’s wedding, Peter’s contact with the Alien symbiote Venom, his dealings with Green Goblin and Lizard as well as when he grew two extra sets of arms, and joined the New Avengers.

You also get a pull-out poster (if you want to ruin your magazine by pulling it out that is), with issue one being the cover of The Amazing Spider-Man #40. Another thing to pull out is a guide on how to play chess – this covers basic moves, how to set up the board, how each piece moves and so on. It’s a very basic guide, aiming to provide you with all the rules and knowhow to muddle your way through a game, but then to develop as you go along. It also offers simplistic advice on how to improve your playing (making sure to develop pieces with the longest reach, how to promote a pawn, deliberate sacrificing as a form of misdirection, and so on).

Marvel Chess Collection
A decent introductory history of Spidey

The latter half of the magazine is a history of the character from a writer and artist perspective. Spider-Man’s issue looks into particular story arcs by Todd Macfarlane and Stan Lee with the last section looking at Spidey’s battle tactics against Doctor Octopus.

Mini me! There's some lazy figure design here
Mini me! There’s some lazy figure design here

How much will this cost me?

In terms of bang for your buck, the set may leave your bank balance hurting. The usual fortnightly issue will be £7.99. If you subscribe, there’s no change in the price, but you get the option of paying an extra fee taking the fortnightly fee up to £8.99 to get the extra Fantastic Four pieces.

However when you subscribe you do get a binder for your magazine issues, as well as the chessboard (this would otherwise cost you £29 as well as 12 vouchers that you collect with each issue) free of charge.

In Conclusion

All-in-all, as an introduction to the game of chess The Marvel Chess Collection is pretty good. You get an easy to understand and informative guide to the game that offers some solid advice, with a good visual display of what it’s explaining. From a comicbook geek perspective, this isn’t a bad set in terms of collections, but it’s missing characters that I would deem a must-have where it comes to the Marvel universe as a whole.

For example – if you talk about beloved characters, you’ll nearly always have Cyclops, Hulk, Shadowcat, Psylocke, X-23, Omega Red, Mystique, Cable and others coming to the fore. The only reason I can think of that these guys and girls weren’t incorporated is if there’s going to be a whole X-men Chess set (which to be fair, is wholly feasible with the plethora of characters available), or if there will be supplementary additions to this initial set, like the aforementioned Fantastic Four set.

I’m not impressed with the cost involved… to make it worthwhile for me the issues would need to be under £5 each. However for the collectors out there, and Marvel fanatics, this will be very attractive either way. There’s a good mix of characters despite the set’s shortcomings, and as a geeky chess set it’s probably one of the better ones I’ve seen, aside from maybe the Alien vs Predator set I covet on an almost daily basis.
