IO Interactive gives first details on next Hitman game

Next-Hitman-First-Details_01-16

I O Interactive have revealed some details on the next installment of the Hitman franchise through an open letter on their website. In their statement they address some of the issues raised with ‘Hitman Absolution’
‘We’ve adopted an open, non-linear level design approach to the game, ensuring the game will play out across huge, checkpoint-free, sandbox levels.'
The new game will also feature a variety of locations and targets.
’The game concentrates on the core Hitman fantasy of using a wide range of tools to take out a diverse group of targets across expansive, exotic locations around the world.'
They also stated that they building the largest levels featured in any Hitman game
‘We are building this game on the backbone of the Glacier 2 engine, using the best parts and what we have learnt through Hitman: Absolution and drawing inspiration from past titles like Contracts and Blood Money to fulfil the core Hitman fantasy. That means we’re packing in an extreme level of detail on the largest levels we have ever built for a Hitman game.'
Contracts Mode is back enabling players to create levels and experimenting with various elements before inviting your friends or the world to attempt your contracts.

Another key element that is being addressed are Agent 47’s ‘Magic pockets’, 47’s ability to carry an entire arsenal around with him whilst only wearing a suit has always been one of the clunkier aspects of the franchise. Addressing this will add a further element of realism to the game and make for more a challenge as players will most likely have to swap out weapons and equipment as the game progresses.

Batman Vs. Superman Release Date Pushed Back to May 2016

0

Yesterday Warner Bros. issued a press release confirming that Zack Snyder’s Batman/Superman’s release date has been delayed from July 17th, 2015 to May 6th, 2016. Some sources are speculating that this delay is due to Batfleck sustaining a leg injury, though there is no official confirmation from the studio.

The delay also means that the Warner Bros. film will be going head to head with an unnamed Marvel film. A very brave move for WB, because let’s be honest they are no Marvel when it comes to making Superhero live action films, they’re a little hit and miss.

Many fans have expressed concerns about what exactly WB are planning for this film. With the confirmation of Wonder Woman – played by Gal Gadot – making an appearance, many a rumour is circulating about other ‘star studded’ players.

Four days ago a flutter of reports suggested Josh ‘Sawyer’ Holloway is been rumoured to have been approached with people suggesting him for the role of Flash or Aquaman, as well as Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson confirming he is in talks with DC – but again no information on a character, though I have my fingers crossed for Cyborg. Even Denzel Washington has been mentioned as John Stewart’s Green Lantern. Again, just to be clear, none of these rumours are ‘official’ but it would seem all they need do is throw in Martian Manhunter and voilà you have a Justice League film. I guess only time will tell.

Yes, I can definitely see that.
Yes, I can definitely see that.

Here is the official Press Release from Warner Bros. Pictures:

[box_light]Warner Bros. Pictures announced today that the release of Zack Snyder’s untitled Superman/Batman film has been moved to May 6, 2016, allowing the filmmakers time to realize fully their vision, given the complex visual nature of the story. The decision was made following the shift of the start of production to second quarter of this year. The Studio has also set a July 17, 2015, worldwide release date for its as-yet-untitled all-new Peter Pan adventure. Joe Wright will direct the epic live-action film about the boy who would never grow up, created by J.M. Barrie. The dual date announcement was made by Dan Fellman, President, Domestic Distribution, and Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, President, International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.

In making the announcement, Fellman stated, “We are happy to take advantage of these coveted summer dates, which are perfect for two of our biggest tentpole releases. We share the fans’ excitement to see DC Comics’ most popular figures, Superman and Batman, together on the big screen for the first time, which will now be arriving in theatres in May 2016. Peter Pan has delighted people of every generation for more than a century, so we are thrilled to bring him back to the screen next summer for today’s moviegoers.”

Kwan Vandenberg added, “We know that there is already great anticipation building for the next Super Hero film from Zack Snyder, and we are equally eager to see what he has in store for Superman and Batman as they share the big screen for the first time ever. The summer release corridor is also perfect for Joe Wright’s ambitious new Peter Pan adventure, reimagining the ageless story of the beloved and forever-young hero for audiences worldwide.”

Zack Snyder’s Superman/Batman film stars Henry Cavill, reprising his role as Superman/Clark Kent, and Ben Affleck as Batman/Bruce Wayne. The film will also reunite “Man of Steel” stars Amy Adams, Laurence Fishburne and Diane Lane, and also stars Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman/Diana Prince.

Snyder will direct the film from a screenplay written by David S. Goyer, from a story co-created by Goyer and Snyder. Charles Roven and Deborah Snyder are producing, with Benjamin Melniker, Michael E. Uslan and Wesley Coller serving as executive producers.

The film is based on Superman characters created by Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster, Batman characters created by Bob Kane, and Wonder Woman created by William Moulton Marston, published by DC Entertainment.[/box_light]

Science For The Win!

2014 Week 2

Getinlosers

Once again this week hasn’t been very eventful. There’s maybe three totally awesome developments in science that have happened since the last round up, and one pretty cool space thingy.

Like Wind Power? You’ll love this new way to charge your cell phone (mobile).

On the beautiful island of Kauai in Hawaii, there is a law that states that no man made structure can exceed the height of a three story building. This has put a huge restriction on the people who have purchased the large energy saving wind turbines. There are an estimated 250 turbines waiting to be set up. They are fully functional and fully paid for by private consumers. And they are serving no purpose except collecting dust. Researchers at The University of Texas-Arlington have developed an extreme alternative to these seemingly innocuous laws.

micro windmill

Miniature turbines that are so tiny, ten can fit on a single grain of rice. Can you imagine!? They are freaking adorable. Made of flexible nickel alloy, these 1.8mm turbines are extremely durable. Currently, the mass producers that have purchased the manufacturing rights are hopeful that in the near future we will be using these to charge our cell phones rather than plugging them in. I don’t know about you but all I imagine is the invasion of cubes from Doctor Who. Micro turbines everywhere.

Save The Bees! Well at least track the bees…

We have all heard about the been pandemic going on. What is happening to all the bees? Why isn’t there more focus on this particular subject? If the bees die off, we all die off. With honey bees accounting for the pollination of at least one third of our food, this being a free service they provide, they are essential to our fragile ecosystem and the survival of thousands of species we share it with. Researchers have created a new way to study the bees and hopefully develop a better understanding of what is happening.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xdk9Bh8W4js

A small computer chip that is attached to the backside of the bees can help track the movements and habits of these little creatures. The researchers are trying to develop a 3D model of bee behaviour in hopes that we can better understand them and help farmers to utilize the free service these bees offer. I personally think this is pretty cool. I might be severely allergic to them, but the bees are so very important to our survival.

NASA gets a well deserved budget increase.

NASA

To quote Armageddon, “I beg our pardon sir, but it is big ass sky.” The current budget only allows for the observation of a very small fraction of the big ass sky. The 2014 fiscal year saw a pretty nice increase though. $800 million to be exact. This brings the total NASA budget to $17.65 billion. The Orion, James Webb Space Telescope, Europa Mission and the Space Launch system are now fully funded. I wish there was more to report on this particular subject, but without sounding like a high school report on the various space programs, I just couldn’t do it. The original article does have some pretty decent information regarding the breakdown of this year funding and the history of the programs funded by this years budget.

Walking Fish? Indeed.

Tiktaalik roseae

One of my favourite steps in evolution was when fish made the transition from water to land. In 2004 a set of fossils called Tiktaalik roseae was discovered by Neil Shubin and his team from University of Chicago. This was a great discovery in evolution as it showed the pelvic girdle to be larger than other previously discovered tetrapod. This caused researchers to examine and focus on this trait. With Tiktaalik having such a large pelvic girdle, the team determined that the limbs or fins of this particular specimen were what allowed the creature to transition to moving through muddy land and not just water. There is still much to learn from this specimen as some of the bones are still missing, some very important ones that could answer more questions we have about this transition.

A fun and simple way to bring science to family time.

This has been floating around for quite some time. I have yet to try it our myself but others have and they say it worked well. They didn’t even have an expensive microscope, just a cheap one from Walmart. It’s all about extracting DNA from organic matter.

DNA can be extracted and examined quite easily. If you don’t have dried peas, strawberries or bananas make an excellent choice. For this experiment, you will need:

 • 100 ml (½ cup) plant source of DNA
 • Less than 1 ml (⅛ teaspoon) table salt
 • 200 ml (1 cup) cold water
 • Enzymes (meat tenderizer or contact lens solution will work well)
 • 30ml (2 tablespoons) liquid dish detergent
 • 70-90% isopropyl or ethyl alcohol
 • Blender
 • Strainer
 • Glass bowl
 • Test Tubes
 • Wooden skewers or straws

Add the plant material, salt, and water to the blender. Blend at the highest setting for 15-20 seconds. Strain the contents over the bowl, and add the detergent. Allow the mixture to rest for 10 minutes. Next, divide into test tubes, each no more than ⅓ full. Add a pinch of enzymes to each tube and very gently stir to combine. Alcohol can be added to each test tube, matching the volume of the plant mixture. The white precipitate between the layers is the DNA! It can be extracted with a clean wooden skewer and examined under a microscope, or placed in alcohol for safekeeping.

I really hope some of you try this at home. There are many more activities that are simple to do at home and can be found here:

Can The Lady Sif save Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D?

0

Jaime Alexander is to reprise her role as The Lady Sif for a special guest appearance in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

The Asgardian will be heading to Midgard with “a very specific mission” so it’s only natural that she will appear on the Agents radar, so to speak. I don’t know if they actually have Asgardian radar but after the events of Thor and Thor: The Dark World, you would have thought that someone had gotten round to inventing one.

Her appearance is very welcome, her character is one much loved by fans of the films and has that rare quality of being a strong female hero not adorned in tight lycra, but instead clad in the armour you would expect from a warrior of her calibre. Jaime plays Sif confidently and, in all honesty, deserves some more Marvel screen time.

52d95e3d51207

AoS has received a lot of criticism since it began and the ratings are dropping.   The characters have been described as weak and uninteresting, with only a couple of the cast getting the viewers approval – those being Agent Coulson and Agent May naturally.

But this is only part of the the issue; the big Marvel cinema releases have raised the viewers expectation too high. The lack of super powered, visually stunning, events and recognisable characters from an already established Marvel Universe – whether this be film or comic – may be putting people off. Something I realised when I got far to excited by the cameo from Nick Fury and the amount of time I spend throwing theories around based on my comic knowledge only for it to be revealed that these new heroes and baddies have very little to do with Marvel canon.

The appearance of The Lady Sif feels like and attempt to secure the link between movie universe and the TV series, but that is not to say we don’t want to see more Sif action, of course we do. But I’m left with that nagging feeling that Marvel are trying to revive a show that the comic fans are turning their backs on and the viewers new to the Marvel universe, don’t find interesting enough.

Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D

Things may be on the up though; during an interview with Comic Book Resources, executive producer, Jeffrey Bell, said the series was “going to get a bigger dosage of the Marvel comics going forward.”
“I would say, in general, I think fans will experience the episodes as being a bit more ‘Marvel,'” he says. “I think we’re always looking to find characters either from the Marvel movie universe or the comic universe that fans would recognize. I think bringing the tension and suspense of the movies is something that we’re looking to do as our characters become more confident. … I think on a few levels, fans will feel it’s moving a bit more in the Marvel direction.”
The message being don’t lose faith quite yet, with the reveal of the clairvoyant coming soon, there may still be hope that Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D will live up to fan’s expectations.

What say you? Excited about this guest appearance or have you given up on S.H.I.E.L.D? What can they do to improve the show and build a loyal fanbase? As always, leave comments below or feel free to tweet me @becpuss .

The Land of OOO Just Blew My Mind.

1

Firstly, some disclaimers, because my lord, do you lot like to bitch and moan:

 1. SPOILERS
 2. This is just a theory, but it is mine, and original, so quote me if you use it please
 3. If you haven’t seen Adventure Time. Stop reading and watch it in whatever way you can*

Right now THOSE people are out the way we can get to the sweet, juicy goods. As you lot are aware, Adventure Time is a thinly veiled deeply adult drama about a post-apocalyptic world in which the last surviving human attempts to find his place in life with a hetero life partner he shares a stolen tree house with. Add in a myriad characters with diverse and quite often heart-wrenching backstories, You have the makings of an incredible show.

Feels.
Feels.

There are many utterly cranium melting moments that have had me gasp, choke on cereal and exclaim “what the fuck?!”  But I now have the absolute honour of coming up with a theory that NO ONE has seen, reblogged, twittered, tumblr’d  or shared before:

How did “Ooo” Get it’s name?

In case you’d forgotten, Ooo is the name of the world after the “great mushroom war” that had  taken a chunk out of it, as first seen in the globe in  the episode “5 Short Graybles”

I really hope they got rid of Australia. seriously, look up drop bears.
I really hope they got rid of Australia. Seriously, look up drop bears.

But where did the name Ooo come from? My suggestion: The Doomsday Clock.

The Doomsday Clock is a globally recognised fictional clock that represents how long it would take for nuclear holocaust to happen; the closer to midnight, the closer we are to global annihilation. It has been a trope since the late 40’s and the closest we have ever been is two minutes to midnight. Iron Maiden once wrote a bitchin’ song about it, but that’s not really the point. Jeeze, stay focused. Oh, alright then.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GPbqQOf41Qc

Anyway, from the evidence given by technology in Adventure Time such as BMO and Princess Bubblegum’s calculator , we can denote that the world had reached the digital age.Now hold onto you white and pointy hats folks, ‘cos this is where it gets interesting.

On the digital clock in 24 hour time, two minutes to midnight would look like this:

23:58

Please don’t feel patronised, this is necessary part of the theory. For you see, midnight, in digital 24 hour time in some clocks is this:

0:00

0:00. Midnight. The time in which according to the Doomsday Clock the apocalypse happened. What if OOO wasn’t the sound, but the numbers Zero Zero Zero?

“But Mike, you handsome wayward stallion” I hear you cry “I, Grammar Nazi have spotted that the land of Ooo is only capitalized initially, rendering your theory completely invalid!”

And you’d be totally right, if this official Adventure Time map of “OOO” didn’t exist.

Boom.
Boom.

You’re welcome.

Got Your own theory about Adventure Time? Comment below, on the Geek Pride fb group, or tweet us @GeekPride1 . Apologies for all the brain that came out of your ears.

*legally. Pirates are for films, TV and Somalia , not for watching TV shows.

Geek Pride Battle Of The Bands : Mike’s Pick

0

Most of us in the GP offices  love us some of that old metal music. From Sabbath to Slayer,  Guns N’ Roses to Gorgoroth, we love the ear splitting, axe hitting, soul shitting rumbles of a good metal band. As geeks we also love anything to do with a myriad of things the “Normies” would laugh at us for falling in love with. So I thought “Mike, you dashing rogue, what if you combined the two?”

So here is this year’s writer challenge: The Geek Pride Battle Of The Bands. The rules are simple: come up with a band and 1 roadie  to play in the battle of the bands, Then in December you guys will vote for the best band, and they will play at the fictional festival of GP’s choice.

Mike’s Band: Fus Ro Gore

Lead Singer: Dovakhiin

skyrim-elder-scroll-v-dovahkiin-vs-dragon-free-315239
Leeeroooooooooooooy

Who?

The legendary Dragonborn from the land of Skyrim, who slayed the great dragon Alduin. Using the power of his voice he can summon dragons, bring thunderstorms and sonic boom goats off a mountain. Charged with the souls of the dragons he defeats, the Dragonborn is an unstoppable Nordic force of heroic power.

Metal?!

 1.  He punches dragons in the throat
 2. Deadric armour
 3. He’s a blacksmith: He literally makes metal
 4. Seriously, IN THE THROAT
 5. Long Hair
 6. can use force lightning
 7. He can marry a werewolf

If that wasn’t enough, check out his theme song:

Lead Guitar: Dante

dante-devilmaycry_001_1199318616
Dante’s housemate, Scythey Dave, was less than impressed with his riveting version of “Eruption”

Who?

Dante is the Son of Demon Sparda and protagonist of the Devil May Cry Series (Which recently had a horrendous reboot) . He is a wise cracking, sword weilding half-demon who started up a demon hunting business purely because he was mad at his dad.

Metal?!

Hell (literally) to the yeah. Dante’s lightning-fast reactions and wise-ass attitude fit him perfectly in the role of Lead shredder. Add this to the way he dresses and we have the perfect candidate. And you Do know HOW he got that guitar right? Dante gained his demonic guitar after beating a Demon to death with a sword literally the length of his body. Before that, he made out with her a little bit. He also once used his impaled arm as a tonfa blade, all the while eating pizza:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JlgClx1gdQA

Rhythm Guitar: Jake The Dog

 giphy

Who?

As I have mentioned in many a podcast, if you haven’t watched Adventure Time, YOU NEED TO.  Jake is a magical dog, and companion to human boy Finn. Together they adventure through the post-apocalyptic land of O00, with our yellow pal doling out advice, help in combat and sometimes a place to sleep. Jake has to power to stretch almost infinitely into many different shapes to accommodate any situation.

Metal?!

Algebraic! Jake the dog is the perfectly metal. firstly, he has the balls to knock boots with a rainicorn and deal with the ridicule that would entail. He can also stretch to any size, once took  the alias of “Gut Grinder” and escaped poison by becoming a big liver. He then did this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1UJgBetBDsE

Bass: Spawn

spawn-comic
He needs a hug.

Who?

Al Simmons was assassinated by the government institution that trained him to become a single-man war machine. He missed his wife so much he gave his soul to the demon Malbogia and became a Spawn- a lietenient demon of Hell’s army. He wears a self aware alien suit with Chains and a cape that move independently of his body. He gains power from evil creatures and can use hell-magic to completely eviserate foes. His face is tied together with a shoe string because Batman threw a Batarang at him.

Metal?!

See above.

Drums: Mike Orvis

Look at him. What a beast.
Look at him. What a beast.

Who?

Yeah, I know. I really tired to think of a drummer… And you can call it nepotism if you like. But I’ve been a drummer for 10 years and I simply could not pass an opportunity to play in a band like this…On a fantasy level anyway. I am writer, editor and podcaster for Geek Pride and really like pizza.

Metal?!

I’d like to think so, apart from my tattoos, piercings , big beard, long hair  and Viking/Roman ancestry, I play in 2 metal bands, 1 grunge band and have been a rock and metal DJ for  5 years.  I am a solid drummer (both physically and rhythmically)  .In addition to this I can hit the high note in Slayer’s “Angel Of Death” . So there.

Roadie:Batman

batman_in_the_shadows_by_switchbladequeen-d5su10o
nananananananana shush.

Who?

Really?

Metal?!

Um… His Alias is THE DARK KNIGHT? fuck yeah is he metal! Batman would suit the roadie job down to a tee. He would ensure every show is planned with absolute precision, he carry most of the gear himself and would set it up in record time. He’s dressed in the right colours, with a utily belt that has the solution for everything in and he dosen’t get drunk. Brucie is the PERFECT roadie.

Think you can do better? give up your suggestions below in the comments, or the Geek Pride fb page. To talk Metal and Comics, follow Mike @The_Dark_Mike on twitter, and to listen to his music find Callous, Dogtown and Bury The Hatchet on the interwebs.

Interview with Rene Koiter (Khaldrene Cosplay)

 https://www.facebook.com/khaldrene

After a long leave of absence from the cosplay interview scene, I felt it time to bring it back; and back with a Dothraki ROAR!! This Interview is with an extremely talented Cosplayer who I fist stumbled across while trawling through Youtube; where in I happened upon a video of his appearance at Blizzard Halloween (See video below).

Most will known for his Khal Drogo Cosplay, Geeks, I present to you; Rene Koiter:

1. Rene Koiter, tell Geek Pride and their readers a bit about yourself. Where are you from, what do you do for fun and what do you want out of life?

I was born in Argentina but grew up in the Netherlands. Since having the capacity to remember, I have always been into geeky stuff…particularly movies and video games of the fantastical and science-fictional kind. In my university years, I got in touch with several folks over at Blizzard Entertainment who are the makers of games such as Warcraft, StarCraft and Diablo. One thing led to another and now I work at their main base in Southern California. Quite a trip! I work as a graphics designer, producing imagery and animations for Blizzard’s web sites. On the side, I really enjoy working out and lifting heavy weights. It’s a great compliment to a sedentary work style…and has its benefits when one day you decide to go on costuming adventures as bold characters.

2. Be straight with us.. The beard, its the source of all your power right?

How dare you compare me to a weakling like Samson. Who would store the source of all their power in their hair?!? My power comes from my mind and from my heart, man. Good thing too, because the mane and lower dangly part of the beard for Khal Drogo’s recreation are extensions. Although, I secretly do wish I could grow a glorious Dothraki pony tail. My hair is naturally curly/wavy so it coils up too much to wear down. A beard, I have no problem growing out though. Did I make you jelly? 🙂

3. How long have you been Cosplaying for and what was your first ever costume?

I have only been cosplaying for a few years and have only done two characters. The first one I am well-known for is Jim Raynor, the protagonist of Blizzard’s StarCraft. He’s this gun-toting Han Solo type scoundrel turned marshall who gets embroiled in an interspecies conflict between the highly-advanced Protoss and the bug-like Zerg. I looked in the mirror one day and thought I bore a mighty resemblance. The second portrayal I did was last year’s Khal Drogo. At Blizzard we have this cool Halloween event where people dress up and go up on stage with a chance to win prizes. I thought it would be fun to participate and give my colleagues a good show. Game of Thrones is definitely in line with the fantasy realms we breathe, so Drogo was a no-brainer as I perceived my features to be strikingly similar.

4. Do you make all the costumes yourself and if so what was the one that took the longest?

Khal Drogo was definitely the most ambitious project. What I keep saying is that this character is so epic and larger-than-life that you really need a team to build him properly. So I decided to divide and conquer. I physically prepared for he role such as growing out the hair for the extensions, working out like a beast and then emulating Drogo’s mannerisms and speech. Then I was referred to a talented costume designer, Nora Holley. She had worked in the film industry and had the artisan craftsmanship to tackle those barbaric materials like leather and fur. For hair and makeup, I conscripted Celeste Aviva Elson and a Scottish fellow who goes by the online pseudonym TrippedWire. Both are incredible at what they do and adopted some crazy first-time techniques to enhance my natural features to look like the great Khal. Finally, I had two colleagues of mine help me out in bringing the final act together. One sculpted and molded the iconic golden medallion belt and the other served as the ill-fated translator during the performance. In hindsight, I have never seen such a monstrous collaboration for Blizzard Halloween before. Dream Team Drogo won first place that day.

5. any tips for budding cosplayer out there who want to follow in your epicly beardy footsteps?

As with pretty much everything else in life, you as an individual will never be as influential as a pack of talent working together to a common goal. You are as a strong as your team so if you want to go places it becomes essential to collaborate. You want that epic beard? You better have a damn good hairdresser! So find cosplay projects and team up, you never know what kind of special you may unleash upon this world.

6. Are there any fellow cosplayers out there who you look up to and wish you could emulate?

Lately I have been enjoying the cosplay of Meagan Marie and Angela Bermudez. These are some fiercely talented ladies who really get into the characters they portray. The artistry displayed in their works is phenomenal…and it may be my biased self but I think their focus gravitates more towards video games which is always a plus for me.

7. What convnetions do you enjoy going to most and any memorable moments?

I have been to SDCC twice, but not in costume. Since I am a Blizzard employee, I always get to go to BlizzCon. My most memorable moment was in 2011 where I was dressed up as Raynor and my colleague (the Dothraki translator) walked around as Ghost unit from StarCraft. The con-goers swarmed us and at one point we were posing for photos for about an hour in a single spot. Crazy. The power of cosplay is that you’re no longer an attendee but you become an attraction. And if you gang-up with others the effect multiplies exponentially….remember, you’re just stronger as a team. Another cool thing was that we got to hang out with Adrianne Curry, former America’s Next Top Model and Geek Extraordinaire. She’s also very into cosplay and a big World of Warcraft player. The show closed in style with the Foo Fighters in concert. What a memorable BlizzCon!

8. Khal Drogo is obviously a huge success for you, with your pictures and video being splashed all over the internet, what is in store for peole next?

I want to hit up SDCC this year and conquer that convention as Khal Drogo. It’s a great venue for the costume as it is an immediately recognizable character. Also, I have some photoshoots planned with some Daenarys cosplayers, one of which is quite uncanny I must say. As for future costumes, I have one video game character in mind who is a cult-classic but surprisingly no one has ever cosplayed him to my knowledge. I like characters that fit and resemble my own physical characteristics. People are very attracted to look-a-likes, it’s like seeing twins. So pranking and leaving people wonder in that way is always a personal motivator for picking a character to cosplay.

9. dare I ask, Game of thrones or Lord of the Rings?

Wow, you got me there! They are quite different kits of the fantastical. GoT is more medieval and grounded whereas LotR is high-fantasy with a greater set of cultural/racial diversity. It’s a tough choice but in the end I’d pick LotR. It’s more colorful with an equal amount of safe havens and dark places to journey to. GoT is bleaker, as it seems everything there just goes through perpetual times of sh!t. What I would give to cosplay as Thorin Oakenshield. Dwarves rule! Even though I am 6’4″, with some trick photography I think I could be a great King under the Mountain.

10. you have been exposed to some radioactive material, it has given you one power of your choice, what would it be and what would you use it for?

I love to eat, especially baked goods. So if I had the super power to consume carbohydrates without them affecting my physique and ruining months of work out, that would be great! Plain oatmeal, eggs and chicken just gets very stale after so long 🙂

MOGA Pocket Android Controller

Mobile gaming for me has always been a little hit-or-miss. Every now and again you’ll get that addictive little gem that uses the touch screen really well, but they’re often shortlived and I lose interest really quickly. Games in general hold my attention more when they’re on a console – the genres of games available are more my thing… first person shooters, third person sandbox games etc.

Moga Pocket Controller Header

What I’m loving of late is the quality of some of the games being released on mobile platforms. There’s some great ports of old games like Max Payne and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and there’s also some really good new titles from companies like Gameloft bringing us the Modern Combat series, and official movie tie-in titles like Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World.

But with these titles the on-screen controls can often be tricky to master and frustrating if, like me, you have quite big fingers. Well the answer to this common problem is here – hardware controllers for your mobile.

I’ve been testing the MOGA Pocket controller for Android devices recently, using it in conjunction with my Google Nexus 4 (They are also available for iOS now too). I really have to say that it’s an awesome device too… I’m honestly wondering how I played console-quality games on my phone without it, and I sure as hell can’t go back to the touchscreen now!

As the name suggests, the Moga Pocket literally fits in your pocket – it’s a robust, well-designed bit of kit that fits snugly in your hand when you’re playing, and folds up when it’s not in use, and comes with it’s own leather pouch with spring-loaded collar for storage.

How it works

Running on two AAA batteries the Moga controller connects to your device via Bluetooth, and on first setup it creates a sync profile for future use. Once it’s synced you don’t need to go through setup again, but the initial connection can take a minute or so to link up on first startup each time you use it.

Along with the controller itself, you’ll need to get the Moga Pivot App (you don’t strictly need it, but I’d advise it – you get app recommendations for a start, only showing you those titles that are Moga-enhanced, which is very useful).

Once your controller is synced with your device, you can run the Moga-enhanced game of your choice, or you can use the controller within the Pivot app to select the game you want to play or download. Once your game starts, there’s no setup to use the controller, and there’s no settings to change. If you’re playing a title like Modern Combat: Zero Hour (which is amazing by the way), any on-screen controls are hidden by default when your Moga is connected.

There is a slight delay between the controller and your movements in-game, but this is barely noticeable. If you’re expecting PC-quality responsiveness then you’ll be left wanting, but otherwise it’ll perfectly meet your needs for general gaming.

Is it worth it?

In a word – absolutely. Let me elaborate a bit more though.

Cost-wise the Moga Pocket clocks in at a reasonable £29.99. Most of it’s competitors are around the same price, but the drop in quality is substantially noticeable when you compare them. For a small bit of hardware that effectively turns your Android phone into an Nvidia Shield, it’s an absolute steal. To add to the value, you’ll also get a free download of Sonic CD and Pac-Man to wet your retro gaming appetite.

There are also a range of Moga controllers. The Moga Pro is the next tier up, which offers a complete console experience, with two clickable analogue sticks, a D-Pad, a more rounded controller and a few more extras that make it worth forking out £43.99. The next two tiers allow for the charging of your mobile device and more. You can check out the full range of Moga’s controllers at www.mogaanywhere.com. For those of you readers not in the US, Amazon is probably your best bet at getting your hands on one.

Now to the really important stuff – which titles support the controller, and are they any good? Well, there’s definitely a mix of quality when it comes to the titles available. But in case it sways you any – you’ve got both Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas as well as Max Payne which are all stellar HD recreations of their console counterparts.

For those of you that’re FPS fans, you have the aforementioned Modern Combat: Zero Hour – this is as close to Call of Duty on your phone as you can get, and it’s bloody good. There’s also the Sci-Fi shooter N.O.V.A 3, Zombie fests Into The Dead and Dead Trigger 2 as well as the retro classic Doom GLES.

Racing nuts have titles like Angry Birds Go!, Need For Speed: Most Wanted, Asphalt 7 & 8 (these are great too – like Burnout) and Crazy Taxi.

All of these titles are well worth your time, and sometimes money (not all of them are free downloads). However for all these great titles, you get some fairly crap ones. I tried out Tiki Racing, which is an attempt at a Mario Kart or LBP Racing kind of game, but unfortunately it fails. The Moga controls just end up being not sensitive enough, or oversensitive – there doesn’t seem to be any mid-ground.

My top 3 recommended games

Out of the games I’ve mentioned, I’m going to give you a quick review of my favourite 3 titles with their pros and cons. To be honest, the first on the list you can probably see coming a mile off.

GTA: Vice City 10th Anniversary Edition

The game I wasted hours, if not days of my life on when I played it on the PS2 is faithfully recreated for the mobile market. This is a glorious HD remake, and nothing is left out. To be honest, if you play games on your mobile, and you don’t own this yet… there’s something wrong with you. All the cut scenes and voices are there, even the little things like bumping into someone on the street and they start shouting at you. The gameplay is just as awesome, as well as the soundtrack (yes, all the radio stations are present too). You NEED this game.

Pros: Great gameplay, graphics, soundtrack and story
Cons: Not many! The draw distance isn’t as good as on console… yes I’m clutching at straws a bit!

Get Grand Theft Auto: Vice City on the Google Play Store HERE.

Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour Meltdown UpdateThis is by far the best mobile first person shooter game on the market at the moment. If you like Call of Duty or Battlefield, and are looking for a similar experience on mobile, then look no further. Excellent graphics and gameplay, a robust online multiplayer system, a good story (though a little short), and some great game features make this a must-own in my opinion.

Pros: Graphically excellent, smooth gameplay, console experience on mobile
Cons: Very short – you can complete this in a couple of hours

Get Modern Combat: Zero Hour [Meltdown Update] from the Google Play Store HERE.

Asphalt 8: AirbourneI like racing games, but there’s only a couple that’ve really got my attention. Burnout: Takedown is my absolute favourite, and Asphalt 8: Airborne makes me grin as much as Burnout did. Ridiculously fast, gorgeous to look at, and some really nice cars. Plus… it’s the only free title of my top 3.

Pros: Giggle-inducingly fast, great multiplayer, beautiful graphics and a good soundtrack
Cons: AI can be frustratingly good sometimes

Download Asphalt 8: Airborne from the Google Play Store HERE.

Bonus – There’s some movie tie-in titles available that support the Moga controllers too and they’re not too shabby either. Check out AVP: Evolution and The Dark Knight Rises.

As far as bad things about the controller go, there really is not much for me to complain about. The fact that it connects through Bluetooth means that this thing will destroy your phone’s battery. However the battery life on the controller itself is really surprising. I’ve played for a couple of hours daily for nearly 2 weeks straight… then played on and off over the course of a month, and I haven’t had to change them yet. My bloody PS3 controllers don’t last that long!

In closing…

I never thought I’d enjoy playing games on my phone so much as I do with the Moga controller. There’s still a few titles that just suit the touch screen better (Marvel Puzzle Quest etc), but for the rest it’s perfect. I never thought that I’d be able to play games like GTA or Call of Duty on my mobile and enjoy the experience, and prior to getting hold of this controller I didn’t. This is the main reason I think one of these controllers is essential buying material. If you’re a gamer of any kind, you should get one.

I’d recommend the Pocket for the budget experience, but if you don’t want your phone dying while playing, splash out on one of the Moga Power controllers instead. You definitely won’t be disappointed.

Academy Award Nominations 2014

0

american-hustle_2756552bThe contenders in one of the most open Oscar races in years were announced today, with science fiction spectacular Gravity and crime caper American Hustle leading the pack with ten nominations each.

Both films are up for Best Picture alongside powerful historical epic 12 Years A Slave, which is hotly tipped by many critics to walk away with the lions share of the major awards in March. Other nominees for the main prize are Philomena, for which star Judi Dench has also received a Best Actress nomination, Captain Phillips, Dallas Buyers Club, Her, Nebraska and The Wolf of Wall Street.

Gravity-2While a few clear favourites have already been drawn up by various media outlets in the Best Picture category, the race for Best Director has proven much more intriguing. British filmmaker Steve McQueen stands a great chance of landing the prize for 12 Years A Slave, however Alfonso Cuaron must also be considered a strong candidate having helmed the groundbreaking special effects masterpiece Gravity. Landing a nomination for The Wolf of Wall Street, the iconic Martin Scorsese is something of a dark horse in a race which also includes American Hustle’s David O. Russell and Nebraska‘s Alexander Payne.

Notably American Hustle has become only the fifteenth film in history to score nominations in all four of the acting categories, but here too the race is quite open. In the Best Actress category Amy Adams receives her fifth Oscar nomination for her role in the crime drama, but she faces stiff competition from Gravity star Sandra Bullock. Leonardo DiCaprio and Matthew McConaughey both achieved Golden Globe glory for their respective roles in The Wolf of Wall Street and Dallas Buyers Club but their main competition is shaping up to be British actor Chiwetel Ejiofor for his powerhouse performance in 12 Years A Slave.

captain-phillips-international-posterThere were some surprise omissions in the main categories this year. There was no room for biopic Mandela: The Long Walk To Freedom, although the U2 soundtrack ‘Ordinary Love’ receives a nomination for Best Song having already triumphed at the Golden Globes. Perhaps the biggest shock is Tom Hanks being left out of the Best Actor race despite receiving plaudits from many critics calling his title role in Captain Phillips his best work in years. Of course it was no surprise at all to see Meryl Streep collect her eighteenth acting nomination for her role in August: Osage County. The American national treasure needs just one more win to tie with Katharine Hepburn as the most successful actress in Academy Award history.

Other noteworthy nominations include Palestinian drama Omar in the Best Foreign Language Film category and a nod for Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa for Best Make-Up.
