Good bye, Christopher Barry.

0

Christopher_Barry_2Today brings the sad news of Christopher Barry’s death, a day in which we say our goodbyes and honour a legend. The 88 year old director has passed away, but the legacy he leaves behind will make him fondly remembered by many generations to come.

He’s known as one of the longest running directors on the cult show Doctor Who, having worked on various episodes since 1963 until 1979, not to mention he directed the straight to video Downtime (a Doctor Who spin-off) and while not the only one to have had this pleasure, he’s among the few to have worked with the first four Doctors.

Perhaps he’s best remembered by his work on The Daleks, a memorable and iconic piece of television, the second serial of Doctor Who, but he has worked steadily on other projects as well, such as:  All creatures great and small, Dramarama or The Tripods. Christopher Barry has been retired for a few years, but his work has ensured that he will never be forgotten by those whose lives he’s touched through his work, on Classic Who and beyond that.

Rest in peace and thank you!

Gotham casts Ben McKenzie as Young Commissioner Gordon

0

Gotham has found its younger version of good ol’ Jim Gordon in the form of Ben McKenzie.

No stranger to playing a role in law enforcement, McKenzie appeared in cop drama Southland, following on from his breakout role in teen angst drama the O.C. Interestingly, he also has a Batman credit under his belt – he voiced the Dark Knight in the 2011 animated Batman: Year One

Southland_McKenzie

The upcoming series produced by Fox/Warner Bros, will revolve around the experiences of  James Gordon before he becomes Commissioner and ally to Batman – his origin story if you will. Fox president, Kevin Reilly, also confirmed back in January that the show will feature the making of some of the iconic villains known to Gotham – with mention of the Riddler, the Peguin and Catwoman. But you can’t have Gotham without Bruce Wayne only this Bruce is going to begin the series around the age of 12 with us witnessing his journey to donning the cape for the first time – which will probably be the series finale as it was with Superman in Smallville.

It also seems that Fox are taking this series very seriously, not only planning to show Bruce’s rise to Batman – which will obviously take several years, but Reilly also confirming that Fox have negotiated a “very healthy licensing fee” to secure “all of the underlying Batman rights for the entire franchise.” He added: “This is not some adjunct companion series.”

So the first cast member has been announced and it’s expected more will follow in the next few months. But what is your opinion on this series? Is it going to be another Smallville or will it have that element of gritty drama that Gotham is so famous for? We encourage you to comment below.

Review: Harley Quinn #1

0
Harley Quinn (2013) #1
Writer: Jimmy Palmiotti, Amanda Conner
Artist: Chad Hardin
Publisher: DC Comics
Release Date: December 18, 2013

This is the long awaited follow-up from my review: Harley Quinn #0, however I’d like to firstly apologise as this review is LONG overdue!

So we all know I was quite hopeful after getting the OK from Bruce Timm with his little segment in Harley Quinn #0, which left me feeling a little less apprehensive about the whole idea of the New 52 Harley Quinn having her own monthly feature. Plus being left in the hands of Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti, we can be a little more optimistic of having a Harley back to her old crazy ways, right?! Alas no, for me this didn’t quite feel like Harley Quinn.

I am trying to remain as unbiased as possible regarding the whole 52 Hardly Quinn; however that being said, this issue for me just seemed to miss the mark. I feel like they are missing out on great “Laugh-Out-Loud “opportunities, for example: Harley’s “Job Hunt” where they certainly could have played with it a lot more than they did, as parts of the script seemed quite out of place and a bit out of character for Miss Quinn; I won’t give too many spoilers there, but Harley Quinn dealing with taxes just seemed very obscure to me.  Why would a villain care for taxes, let’s be honest here, she wouldn’t!

Harley Quinn is a character where the writers and illustrators should be letting go a bit and having fun; however I just get the vibe they are playing it all a little bit too safe. Do not get me wrong, it was still an enjoyable read, I just felt that when you have a character who is as well developed and known as Harley that they should be playing into all her maniacal quirky traits. She comes off as less “off-the wall”, intelligent and funny; which is a shame as Harley is a character that Conner could have pushed on a bit more.

Overall; Harley Quinn #1 misses the mark for me, and doesn’t quite leave me hopeful for the next installment. However  that being said, I do thoroughly enjoy the artwork by Hardin, though it doesn’t quite have that look I am used to seeing Harley portrayed in; I guess I am a bit bias and will forever see Harley as how Bruce Timm made her.

Ms. Marvel Rumoured for Age of Ultron

Ok so the rumour about Paul Bettany becoming Vision for Avengers 2 has finally been confirmed, however news of another hero joining the Age of Ultron cast has surfaced thanks to Latino Review.

ms_marvel_header

Ms. Marvel is reported to be one of the final characters being brought into the now even more epic-sounding Avengers sequel – this is a rumour that so far has no confirmed source for it, but Latino Review are usually very on-point when it comes to this kind of stuff.

For the uninitiated, the short version of Ms. Marvel’s origin is the result of Carol Danvers being caught up in an explosion with the Kree warrior Mar-Vell, aka Captain Marvel. This causes their DNA to merge, resulting in Danvers emerging as Ms. Marvel – a perfect hybrid of human and Kree genes. Along with having all of Captain Marvel’s Kree knowledge and training, she’s endowed with superhuman strength, speed, agility, stamina, durability, as well as flight, a 7th sense, energy absorption like Sebastian Shaw in First Class… and a lot more. Ms. Marvel took on several monikers – Binary, Warbird as well as Captain Marvel in honour of where she received her powers.

ms_marvel_main

In terms of casting, we have almost nothing yet. BSG’s Katee Sackhoff was loosely linked to the role, but if I’m honest I don’t think she’d be right for it. Don’t get me wrong – I love Katee Sackhoff, but I think she might be better suited to a role like Harley Quinn.

With Ultron, Vision, Ms. Marvel, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch and the rest of the Avengers, Age of Ultron is (on paper) shaping up to be a true opus for Joss Whedon. Is it too much for one movie? Who would you cast as Ms. Marvel if this rumour is confirmed? Comment and let us know!

James Franco To Direct Movie Telling The Story Of ‘The Room’

0

Legendary so-bad-it’s-good film The Room is to be the focus of a new movie directed by Oscar-nominated actor/director James Franco.

The_Room_Header

Since a very limited release in 2003 Tommy Wiseau’s opus has become one of the most oft-quoted cult movies of the last decade. Many big Hollywood names have proclaimed themselves fans of the movie including Alec Baldwin, Edgar Wright and Paul Rudd, and it seems James Franco is also among those names. According to Deadline and The Nerdist Franco’s Rabbit Bandini Productions has optioned the rights to Wiseau biography The Disaster Artist: My Life Inside The Room, with plans for Franco to direct and co-produce along with Seth Rogan and Evan Goldberg’s Point Grey Productions.

Franco has apparently hinted that both he and his brother Dave will be starring in the film, and seeing as good friend Jonah Hill is among the professed celebrity fans of The Room one has to wonder if there will be a role for the Wolf Of Wall Street star too.

We at Geek Pride look forward to seeing a tongue in cheek look at the behind the scenes shenanigans of this infamous piece of cinema. Franco has already said that The Disaster Artist is in some ways reminiscent of Boogie Nights, which will make his interpretation of the various issues surrounding The Room’s love scenes interesting. And how about the numerous takes that it took to create this scene?

As yet there is no word on when production will start, but rest assured we will be following the story as it develops.

Paul Bettany is The Vision in Avengers: Age of Ultron

0

Paul-Bettany-Cast-as-the-Vision-in-Avengers-Age-of-Ultron

Putting an end to numerous rumours and theories it’s been announced that Paul Bettany, who has been the voice of Tony Stark’s computer Jarvis in several of Marvel’s films, will be playing The Vision in the upcoming second Avengers film – Age of Ultron.

For those not familiar with  the characters history, The Vision – an android with various abilities – was created by Ultron as a weapon to destroy The Avengers. Ultron was created by Dr. Henry “Hank” Pym based on his own brain waves. Ultron, becomes a rogue A.I and upgrades himself several times, crafting a virtually indestructible body made from adamantium. Pym and Ultron’s relationship is a father and son rift writ large with Pym’s creation eventually running amok and becoming one of The Avengers more powerful recurring adversaries. Ultron’s own creation, Vision, rejects his villainous ways opting to join The Avengers rather than destroy them. Vision eventually becomes involved with Scarlet Witch, another member of The Avengers.

How much of this history will actually feature in Joss Whedon’s second Avengers film and how it will tie into the larger story of Marvel’s cinematic universe is yet to be seen.

It’s Official: Ennis And Dillon’s Preacher Heading For AMC.

Not content with having a smash hit show based on one critically acclaimed comic AMC have now made it official that Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s kentucky fried western road trip comic Preacher will soon be coming to a screen near you.

Joel Stillerman, AMC executive vice president of original programming, production and digital content had this to say,

“This is a great piece of material for AMC, and we’re thrilled to begin working with the creative team behind it to make another iconic AMC series……. Given the massive success The Walking Dead has been for AMC, the acquisition of another high-profile comic book adaptation isn’t a surprise.”

That one of the most controversial, dark, twisted and critically acclaimed comics of modern times is being adapted by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg best known for comedy is a little odd. Whilst Preacher is comedic it’s a jet black kind of funny. Breaking Bad‘s Sam Catlin is also set to be assisting with the adaptation.

Garth Ennis had this to say,

“Steve Dillon and I are very happy to see Preacher being developed for TV, which seems a much more natural home for the story than a two-hour movie.” “Between them, Sony TV and AMC have brought viewers two of my favorite shows with Breaking Bad and Mad Men, and it’s exactly that kind of creative commitment and courage that Preacher needs. Obviously it’s taken a while, but Ken Levin along with Neal Moritz and his team refused to give up, long after the point when I myself grew skeptical, and their unrelenting enthusiasm for the project has gotten us where we need to be. I’m particularly impressed that Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and Sam Catlin understand Preacher fully — meaning they get it for what it is, not some vague approximation. All in all, it looks like Preacher can now be brought to TV in a way that I’d previously not have thought possible, and I very much appreciate that Steve and I have been included in the conversation in the way that we have.”

Whilst Ennis seems positive it still remains to be seen just how much of Preacher will actually make the transition given the title’s notoriety, especially when it comes to religion, Christianity in particular.

You can start ‘debating’ about casting now.

Nevermind: The new horror game that can use your own fear against you

0

nevermind

Do you remember shitting yourself when that dog jumped through the mansion window in Resident Evil for the first time? And did you ever wish that dog could read your mind and then either scarper or pounce and rip your face off dependant on your level of anxiety? Well that is the kind of experience that veteran indie developer Erin Reynolds wants to create with her new project ‘Nevermind’.

Currently available to back on Kickstarter, Nevermind is built to sense human fear through some of sort of black magic biofeedback sensor trickery that hasn’t been fully revealed yet. The sensor detects stress levels in the player and then alters the game environment to invoke more fear if the player seems stressed or anxious.

Alternatively, stoic Chuck Norris types will be given an easier time with more forgiving challenges and retreating enemies. The game’s developers hope that any fear or stress management skills earned from playing the game might go on to help people in the real world.

It’s definitely an interesting concept and when the guy who directed Journey and developed Fl0w as a University project, Jenova Chen, is willing to be quoted as an official supporter then it’s probably going to be one to watch.  The Kickstarter has a target of $250,000 and is currently at just over $23,000 with 27 days to go but Valve have already pre-approved a Steam release.

For those who don’t want to use the biofeedback sensor, the game will be fully playable using standard controls and Oculus Rift support and an Xbox One port are planned for later down the line.

A minimum $20 donation is required to receive a pre-order copy and backers will have their names included in the game’s credits.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier releases second trailer

0

It looks like Marvel are continuing to rock the world of superhero films with the second instalment of Captain America. To be fair we only have two trailers to base that assumption on. Let’s face it, this second trailer suggests the sequel is going to be high in superhero stunts, rooting for the good guy with the added bonus of more Marvel canon – namely Sam Wilson aka Falcon, oh and The Winter Soldier himself of course.

I’m also super happy to see more Black Widow, proving woman can kick ass and leap of tall heights as well as the next man. But what really intrigues me, what really has me gasping with horror and jumping to conclusions is this – who’s dead? If you don’t know what I’m talking about watch the trailer now:

Directed by Anthony Russo & Joe Russo, Captain America: The Winter Soldier stars Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan, Scarlett Johansson, Anthony Mackie, Robert Redford, Cobie Smulders and Samuel L Jackson. Due for release on the 28th of March in the UK and 4th of April in the USA.
