Why Hannibal is the best thing on TV

Get a shave, Rick!

The Oscar season’s over and we can expect cinema to be relatively quiet until the Summer blockbusters hit our screens. With The Walking Dead back on the scene and Game of Thrones returning next month, it’s the time of the year where the small screen takes the spotlight. Now, that’s not to say that it’s all spectacular viewing. For me, The Walking Dead has been a little lacklustre since it’s return, with the gang all splitting off and more sad faces than usual. Although, I do love the way that Rick’s facial hair seems to indicate his emotional and psychological state. It’s time to get a shave and man the hell up, mister.

So, The Walking Dead is losing its appeal with some viewers and the highly anticipated return of Game of Thrones is another month away. Then there’s Terence Winter’s superb Boardwalk Empire, set to return for it’s fifth and final season this year, but there is little clue as to when. With a bit of a gap in our schedule, I thought I’d bring our lovely readers’ attention to a show that still hasn’t quite hit the big time, despite it’s stellar cast.

hannibal
Based on characters and elements from Thomas Harris’ novel Red Dragon, Bryan Fuller’s spectacular Hannibal returned for it’s second season last week. I’ll avoid any spoilers about the opener for season two, but it really was a belter, setting the story in full swing from the offset. Starring Mads Mikkelsen in the title role, alongside Hugh Dancy and Laurence Fishburne, Hannibal is a refreshing take on the tried and tested psychological-horror-thriller-drama-type-thing. The show has received great critical acclaim due to it’s unique visual style and excellent performances.

The series primarily focuses on the relationship between forensic psychiatrist Dr. Hannibal Lecter and FBI Special Investigator Will Graham (Dancy), who Lecter takes great interest in. Graham is a criminal profiler with a unique method of visualising himself committing the murders that he investigates. However, his techniques invite criticism from his colleagues and take their toll on his psychological state. Dr. Lecter assists on the FBI investigations, some of which are often his own brutal crimes.

Laurence Fishburne plays Graham’s boss, Jack Crawford, developing a friendship with Lecter with whom he enjoys many dinner dates – nomm. Crawford is the Morpheus to Graham’s Neo (yeah, it’s a difficult image to get out of your head) and is constantly concerned for his mental well-being. Will’s heavily stylised visualisations give the show an almost supernatural feel, but that only adds to it’s unique style.

Mads Mikkelsen plays a fantastic Hannibal Lecter, equal parts charming and creepy. His performance in the show constantly draws your attention, whilst being deeply disturbing at the same time. As expected, Hannibal can be extremely gory at times, displaying constant ‘viewer discretion advised’ messages across the screen. Some of the murder investigations are incredibly bizarre and rather extraordinary, definitely a little different to most crime shows on TV at the moment. However, perhaps the most stomach churning scenes are those with implied gore and subtlety. Dr. Lecter is fond of the culinary art and hosts a dinner date at least once during each episode, the food preparation scenes for which are often rather unsettling, even if human flesh isn’t on the menu.

The finale of Hannibal’s first season involved a dramatic and interesting turn of events, which are difficult to express without any spoilers. To top it off, last week’s opener was rather spectacular and indicates some excellent episodes to come in the thirteen episode season. Airing on NBC in the US every Friday, Hannibal really is worth your time. If you’re looking for something a little different to zombies and dragons this Spring, I urge you to pick up the first season and give Mads and the gang a watch. Hannibal gets you hooked from the offset and is a fresh contender in the TV battle.

It’s delectable.

Learn about nuclear physics from GLaDOS in this fun NASA video

0

“Do you really not know what nuclear fusion is?”

Everyone who has played Valve’s Portal loves GLaDOS, that’s a simple fact. Her sadistic, humourless and robotic tones turned an interesting physics puzzle game into a cult classic, enjoyed by many gamers who would otherwise steer well clear of the puzzle genre. So, how would you like to hear Ellen McLain (the voice of GLaDOS) explain the difference between nuclear fusion and nuclear fission? Well, NASA have just the thing for you.

Unlike other ‘infotainment’ pieces, this NASA video is far less groan-inducing (although, the technicians may still make you cringe). There’s definitely something quite amusing about hearing GLaDOS talk about nuclear physics and I’d be lying if I said that I’d not rather have had this to watch in those old school science classes!

wt_logo

War Thunder is a free-to-play online combat game, which is set during WWII and features armoured combat rather than infantry. An open beta version has been available on PC and PS4 for some time but so far it has only included air units; the final version is set to also feature ground and naval units.

However a closed beta, which allows players to try out ground units is now under way. It also includes new aircraft and game modes. This has only been available to those who purchased starter packs but it shouldn’t be too long before these features are included in the open beta version. I can’t wait to try out the tanks!

If you’re a Mac gamer, and you want to sign up for the beta, head on over to the sign up page.

I’m not really familiar with Moon Knight if I’m honest, however I’m loving the return of Headpool from last year’s Halloween event, but then I’m a bit of a nerd when it comes to anything Deadpool-orientated.

Rocket Raccoon to get his own Comic Series

The most badass alien/raccoon that ever lived

MTV picked up the exclusive a couple of days ago from Marvel, Rocket Raccoon is getting his own graphic novel series. The Guardians of the Galaxy film isn’t even out for several months yet but Marvel are backing their feisty alien…..that looks exactly like the earth mammal we know as a raccoon.

Skottie Young: Writer/Artist
Skottie Young: Writer/Artist

The potentially very entertaining series will be written and drawn by well-known Marvel artist Skottie Young, Young has spent the past five years working on Marvel’s ‘Oz‘ adaptations, along with making covers for other Marvel superheroes. Speaking to MTV News Young told them, ‘I like any of the humorous characters, any of the ones I can have fun with,’ he went onto say, ‘And around this time ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ was getting restarted, so I said if there was any way of doing some sort of Rocket Raccoon story that would be fun too!’

Rocket Raccoon: Bill Mantlo & Keith Giffen’s creation

The furry fiend has been around for over 30 years, when Bill Mantlo and Keith Giffen created him. Rocket hangs around with his sentient tree companion in a place called Keystone Quadrant. If the fact that a maniacal gun wielding raccoon who hangs around with a sentient tree isn’t enough to get you excited nothing will.

Skottie Young wasn’t giving away much in his interview to MTV however they did get a sneak preview of a couple of pages. In the first issue we see Rocket at an ‘intergalactic MMA wrestling style match’, where his tree friend Groot is fighting a tentacled alien.

How do you feel about this latest move from Marvel? A stroke of genius or simply milking the possible cash cow that is ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’.

86th Academy Awards: Predictions, Rants and Wish Lists

0

It’s that time of the year when the biggest and best come together to find out who gets that coveted award – no, I’m not talking about the Pokémon X and Y Battle Tournament. It’s Oscar season, baby. With the 86th Academy Awards taking place in the US on Sunday, it’s time for an Oscar round-up. I’m going to cover the top categories with predictions for each as well as my own choices for Oscar gold.

The Wind Rises
The Wind Rises

Best Animated Feature

The Croods
Despicable Me 2
Ernest & Celestine
Frozen
The Wind Rises

Prediction: Either Frozen or Despicable Me 2 are surely going to take this prize. My money’s on Disney, because well, it’s Disney. Frozen picked up the BAFTA and that’s a good indication for Oscar glory.

My Choice: I’d love to see Studio Ghibli’s The Wind Rises pick up the award. It’s fantastic that Hayao Miyazaki has received a nomination and shows that films outside of Disney and Dreamworks can still be contenders. It’s unlikely, but at 14/1 with the bookies, it’s not a complete long shot.

Dallas Buyers Club
Dallas Buyers Club

Best Actor in a Leading Role

Christian Bale (American Hustle)
Bruce Dern (Nebraska)
Leonardo DiCaprio (The Wolf of Wall Street)
Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave)

Prediction: Surprisingly, Matthew McConaughey is the current favourite to pick up the Oscar for his role in Dallas Buyers Club. I’m not surprised because I think he’s undeserving, but Leo and Chiwetel Ejiofor have previously been considered as the frontrunners for this highly sought after prize. Ejiofor picked up the BAFTA, but Dallas Buyers Club didn’t receive a single nomination so McConaughey missed out there.

Now, I bloody hate Matthew McConaughey, but after watching Dallas Buyers Club recently, he’s the clear winner in my mind. The role really takes the actor outside of his comfort zone and he underwent such a transformation for the role, it would be great to see him take the prize. However, Ejiofor is close behind him and could still snatch the victory away.

Dallas Buyers Club
Dallas Buyers Club

Best Actor in a Supporting Role

Barkhad Abdi (Captain Phillips)
Bradley Cooper (American Hustle)
Michael Fassbender (12 Years a Slave)
Jonah Hill (The Wolf of Wall Street)
Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club)

Prediction: At odds of 1/12, Jared Leto has swept ahead of the competition for his role in Dallas Buyers Club. I was sceptical of his role in the film at first, but boy, does he pull it off. His performance in the film is far from his rock star persona and there’s no doubt that the man can act. As my choice for the Oscar, Leto brings heart to the film and is a perfect counterpart to McConaughey’s hard-man exterior.

Gravity
Gravity

Best Directing

American Hustle (David O. Russell)
Gravity (Alfonso Cuarón)
Nebraska (Alexander Payne)
12 Years a Slave (Steve McQueen)
The Wolf of Wall Street (Martin Scorsese)

Prediction: Gravity. The chances of Alfonso Cuarón winning Best Directing for Gravity are so high that betting has been suspended by some bookies. Whilst he did pick up the BAFTA for the same prize (amongst Gravity winning a whole lot else), I’ve got to admit that I’m extremely disappointed. Steve McQueen is still in with a shot for 12 Years a Slave though and a much more deserved winner in my eyes.

My Choice: I was rather shocked to find that Jean-Marc Vallée didn’t receive a nomination for Dallas Buyers Club. As a relatively inexperienced Director in comparison to others up for Best Picture, his direction really is superb. However, his work is a little reminiscent of Darren Aronofsky (The Wrestler), so perhaps he didn’t stand out. I’m a huge Scorsese fan as well, but in my eyes The Wolf of Wall Street isn’t quite up there with some of his previous films, so I can’t see him taking the prize.

12-Years-A-Slave__140101173929Best Picture

American Hustle
Captain Phillips
Dallas Buyers Club
Gravity
Her
Nebraska
Philomena
12 Years a Slave
The Wolf of Wall Street

Prediction: 12 Years a Slave is tipped for the top prize with Gravity following closely behind. If Gravity wins, you can expect a full blown rant from me in my Oscar follow up. There are a few odd nominations, but to me, the only contenders should really be 12 Years a Slave, American Hustle, The Wolf of Wall Street and Dallas Buyers Club. 12 Years a Slave is the obvious choice given it’s subject matter and stellar cast, but films like American Hustle and Dallas Buyers Club also have excellent casts that really make the films excel. Now, I don’t think American Hustle is worthy of an Oscar for Best Picture, but it’s surely more deserving than a film where George Clooney and Sandra Bullock float around in space.

My Choice: At a little bit of an outsider at 25/1, I’ll be taking a gamble on Dallas Buyers Club. I think this feature pretty much sums up it’s position as my favourite Oscar nominee this year and I really was disappointed that it didn’t make it to the BAFTAs. I also fancy The Wolf of Wall Street in with a slight chance, but as I stated earlier, it’s not one of Scorsese’s bests and it is very, very long.

Oscars

The Best of the Rest

Best Actress: My list may seem lacking in the females, but to be perfectly honest, I haven’t really seen any of the leading ladies in action besides Amy Adams in American Hustle, which was hardly Oscar worthy. Apparently Cate Blanchett is a sure thing for her performance in Blue Jasmine, so best of luck to her.

Best Actress in a Supporting Role: Again, my viewing of these supporting stars is a little lacking but Lupita Nyongo’s performance in 12 Years a Slave is set to win her the prize.

Best Original Screenplay: With Her and American Hustle in place as the favourites, my choice of Dallas Buyers Club (yes, again) is trailing behind.

Best Adapted Screenplay: 12 Years a Slave in once again leading the competition, but for me The Wolf of Wall Street has been seriously overlooked. I’m a big fan of writer Terence Winter (Boardwalk Empire, The Sopranos) and would love to see him win an Oscar for his work with Scorsese.

Archer Vice

0

PAM

For anyone who’s not aware of Archer, give me your location and I’ll send a pimp over to your house to slap you. Archer is a spy comedy cartoon. Archer Vice is the same cartoon, only now it’s a show about an up-and-coming drug cartel.

Let me explain.

Archer is a show that relies heavily on in-jokes and callbacks to reward today’s pop-culture-obsessed audiences. Who doesn’t love that? However, Archer is just beginning its fifth season, which means that for potential new viewers, there’s a lot of homework to do if you want to get why the mere mention of ants is so funny. So, rather than risk alienating people with an impenetrable force field of in-jokes, they’ve gone a new route: taken away the spy agency security blankie, and replaced it with a quest to sell a tonne of cocaine and make former secretary Cheryl a country music sensation. And why not?

This move has proved mostly popular among fans, who still have the full cast and the banter that goes with them to keep them happy, although some feel it’s too radical a departure- so much so that it “doesn’t feel like Archer” any more. Still, it can’t be denied that without this, Archer would have turned into another “mission of the week” show, with never-resolved sexual tension and Flanderised characters. Kudos to the Archer team for having the balls to change it!

So enough of the whys and wherefores- what’s actually going on in Archer Vice?

Archer Vice is five episodes in, and yes, it is awesome.

New Matrix Trilogy Planned?

0

matrix banner

Word has surfaced on the mouth-watering prospect of a fresh trilogy of Matrix films coming from The Wachowskis.  Detail is scant right now but according to Latino Review, who broke the story a few hours ago, we are looking at a prequel trilogy.

Presumably this means we will not see a return for Neo himself but if, as The Architect stated, Neo wasn’t the first ‘One’ then we could certainly see a similar role evolve.

MCDMARE EC060

A point of note is that from what has been stated it looks like the animated tie-in Animatrix anthology will not affect the new films. Also stated is that an early outline was about the birth of the Matrix, which poses the question as to whether the Animatrix will still be considered part of the Matrix canon, given that some of the shorts it contains covers this very subject. The Animated films were generally accepted as such due to the involvement the Wachowskis had in them – they wrote four out of the nine shorts that make up the collection.

A suggested release date for the first of the prequels is 2017 based on the fact that Warner needs some seriously big guns to compete with the sci-fi heavy hitters coming out at that time. All of this is still very early and still awaits official confirmation but what we are actually waiting for is the series of official denials that often prelude such. For the love of Neo make this happen!

Damn it, I’m sure I had a spoon here a moment ago…

The Flash: First Photo Revealed

0

Momentum is building on the highly anticipated TV show The Flash. Since Barry Allen’s appearance in two episodes of Arrow, speculation and questions have been flying around the internet with the subject of the costume being the hot topic. Well, WB are giving us a bit of a sneak peek with this head shot of Grant Gustin as the iconic DC hero.

gustinflash-8ce05

The costume has been designed by Colleen Atwood, an academy award winner and designer of Stephen Amell’s Arrow costume. From what we can see, it seems to be one of the better adaptations; the iconic ear piece is present which is very satisfying and the eye piece is looking pretty good. The overall colour is a darker shade than the one we’re used to and it doesn’t appear the full costume will be the spandex heaven seen in the comics. That’s ok though, when bringing superheroes to live action many fans have come to accept that some things are just not going to be the same, but as long as they keep it mostly faithful there won’t be a mass internet outcry. But alas, we must just wait until we see the full reveal to know whether the hardcore fans will be happy, but based on this image, I have high hopes.

Production for the series starts next week with the pilot contending for a spot on CW’s 2014-2015 schedule. As well as Grant Gustin playing Barry Allen/Flash, Candice Patton is confirmed to play Iris West and Carlos Valdes will play Cisco Ramon, “a mechanical engineering genius and the youngest member of the team of scientists at STAR Labs” The pilot is written by Berlanti, Kriesberg and DC chief creative officer Geoff Johns, a former long-time writer of the Flash comics.
