WWE Extreme Rules 2014
East Rutherford, NJ – 04/05/14

Extreme Rules has been one of the highlights of the WWE calendar over the last several years. Regardless of the card, it always tends to be a brilliant show. Even in the PG era – which tends to make most stipulation matches seem obsolete – this pay-per-view has rarely failed to deliver. With a pretty stacked line-up of established hands and legitimate rising stars, it was always going to be a success.

Cesaro v RVD v Jack Swagger
(Triple Threat Elimination Match)

This was the very solid opening match that most people expected. Everybody “got their shit in” as Stone Cold would say, and I think it made everybody look good. I was surprised to see Jack Swagger be taken out first by the five-star-frog-splash by Van Dam. I thought that the two former tag partners would end up facing off alone. Nonetheless, the final two did an excellent job. RVD brought out the extreme and had the big man on the ropes, so to speak. However, his second splash of the night missed and he hit his face on a trash can. Judging by the marks in and around his eye, Van Dam took more damage than was planned.

The King of Swing grabbed him up and hit him with the Neutraliser, for the victory. Cesaro powers on and his push is looking strong. This was also a great showing from RVD. One thing that disappointed me about this match happened outside the ring, at the announcer table. Michael Cole botched the fact that this was an elimination match, most painfully when he claimed that Van Dam had won the match by beating Swagger.

Alexander Rusev v R-Truth & Xavier Woods
(2-on-1 Handicap Match)

This match surprised me. I expected it to be basic filler and a loose exhibition for Rusev. It was both of those things, but so much more. Lana came out to the ramp first and put up a picture of Vladimir Putin on the big screen. That was weird, but amusing. The subsequent moronic “USA!” chants were an eye-opener. I didn’t think that old patriot angle could work anymore, but I guess it still can. This bout wasn’t the squash that I thought it would be. Rusev came out the winner, but it was a lot more competitive and inventive than I expected it to be. The match was booked rather well, but I fear for the Bulgarian. I’ve been very impressed with him, but his gimmick is going nowhere.

Big E(c) v Wade Barrett
(for the Intercontinental Championship)

The babyface Big E came out to complete silence. His opponent (the heel) Wade Barrett was cheered throughout the match. Huge “Bad News Barrett” chants were ringing out around the arena. Pay attention WWE! There were some really awesome suplexes in this very competitive match. There were tonnes of near falls. I was very pleased to see Wade win the title with the bull-hammer elbow. The crowd went insane after the three count. It felt like a really special moment and I think it’s a good thing for the IC strap.

Evolution v The Shield
(Six Man Tag Team Match)

I thought this was a very strange position on the card for what seemed to be the clear main event of the show. I worried that it could make the main event anti-climactic. Regardless, this was a world class match. The pace and tempo was excellent. Some of the moves were out of this world. The Shield once again pulled out all the stops to steal the show, while the three old lions led them to a brilliant encounter. It went through several stages and told a great story.

Dean Ambrose applying the figure four leg lock was a nice touch. Randy Orton doesn’t get anywhere near enough credit, for being the high grade worker that he is. The “You Can’t Wrestle!” chants aimed at Batista were nonsensical. The match really exploded when Roman Reigns got the hot tag and exploded into a crazy sequence. This sparked a brilliant back-and-forth, full of awesome false finishes. While Reigns and Batista were grounded in the ring, the other four guys brawled into the stands. Ambrose was isolated by Orton and Triple H, when Seth Rollins launched himself off the upper stand and splashed them. This truly was a “Holy shit!” moment, and it wasn’t the last.

shielddown

With everybody down, Batista fell victim to the Superman punch and huge spear. This match was memorable, special and incredible. It was an enthralling performance from all six guys, and a very big win for The Shield.

John Cena v Bray Wyatt
(Steel Cage Match)

Steel cage matches don’t mean too much these days, but this was another surprisingly good match. John Cena acknowledged the insane crowd heat that he received on the ramp. It’s getting pretty crazy these days. I think it might be time to do the turn, or even a double-turn. Bray Wyatt seems to be getting more over by the week. I know it was a pretty hardcore crowd, but this was still significant. It seems like we are about to witness a change in the guard.

As for the match, it was very impressive. The crowd were hot. The storytelling was captivating. I didn’t think it would, but this genuinely had me on the edge of my seat for the most part. They managed to find interesting ways to use the numbers game, despite the steel cage. Things reached a crescendo when John Cena was about to exit the cage door. A child greeted him with the freaky song that we have all come to love, only his voice was distorted and creepy. That distraction took the man that never loses from victory to defeat in a heartbeat. He turned into Sister Abigail’s Kiss and Bray exited the cage. He walked with the child and the rest of his family to the back. Some may have found this quite gimmicky, but I thought it made sense to the story and it was something different. Big win for Bray!

Paige(c) v Tamina Snuka
(for the Divas Championship)

This was a very good match. We really are looking at some positive times for the Divas division right now. Both girls did very well making this match a success, but I can’t believe how hard they are pushing Paige. The fighting Champion was on the winning side again, this time against probably her most dominant challenger. She made the big, strong, daughter of Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka tap out to her “modified scorpion cross-lock” – at least that’s what I think it is.

paigerules

Daniel Bryan(c) v Kane
(Extreme Rules Match for the WWE Championship)

The amount of crowd heat for this match was very disappointing. I hope the Yes! movement doesn’t prove to be a fad. The opening stages of this clash were bog standard, but it really got interesting when the two brawled into the backstage area. The intense monster Kane through a television set at Bryan. He dodged and it crashed into a bucket of ice water. The effects of this tripped out the video and audio for a little while – the whole thing seemed unpredictable and dangerous at this point. He then through a gas canister at Bryan, only to see it smash the windscreen of a car. The Big Red Machine then punched through another car window. This brawl was awesome!

Dragon then symbolically drove Kane to the ring on the end of a forklift. He lifted him into the ring, and then climbed the machine himself, to land a wicked diving head-butt. Still no pop, for any of this. Another long two in a very strong match. It was a big shame about the crowd. My only guess is that they were tired from all of the other great matches. Things took an insane turn when Kane set fire to a table outside the ring. After having already choke-slammed him through the announce table, I thought he was going to do the same again. Bryan blocked it and through the big man off the apron through the burning table. He was then extinguished in the face for several seconds, only to stumble into the ring and suffer the running high knee. Daniel Bryan got the win and retained the title.

burningtable

Final Thoughts: Overall, this was a fantastic event. In the PG Era that we live in, I thought the days of guys jumping off stands and burning tables at ringside were over. There were a few botches by commentators and referees, but the work from the wrestlers was out of this world. Most of the matches had the crowd popping. I think they were too tired at the end of the night to go on any more, and that’s a good sign. Extreme Rules is always a strong show. Payback – on the other hand – does not sound so appealing. WWE will have to do a lot, to one-up themselves after last night. However, it’s a great time to be following the product. With the likes of Cesaro, Bray Wyatt, The Shield and Wade Barrett getting mega-pushes, the future is looking bright.

Thanks for reading, and be sure to come back for my Payback review in June. With the show emanating from the All State Arena in Chicago, the company is sure to try and do something big to avoid a CM Punk hijack. I don’t see it being successful, unless Stone Cold or The Rock make an appearance.

Original Cast of Boy Meets World

For those of you that grew up in the 90s (your awesome by the way), you will probably have seen Disney Channels hit show ‘Boy Meets World’, a show about Cory Matthews (Ben Savage) growing up through High School and College with his best friend Shawn Patrick Hunter (Rider Strong) and his girlfriend and eventual wife Topanga Lawrence-Matthews (Danielle Fishel). The relationship between Cory and Topanga was one of the greatest TV series love stories and brought viewers coming back for seven great seasons.

Well if you wanted to know what happened after college to the married couple then want no more, for ‘Girl Meets World’ is coming to your TV screens Friday June 27th. It features Cory and Topanga as the proud parents of main character Riley Matthews, the star of the show and 12 year old seventh grader. Cory and Topanga have one more child a 6-year-old son by the name of Auggie Matthews.

Many people maybe wondering just how many of the old characters from the original series ‘Boy Meets World’ will be coming back, well the truth is quite a lot of them. Rider Strong reprises his role as Cory’s best friend, William Daniels is back playing the role of George Feeny, Cory’s omnipresent mentor along with William Russ and Betsy Randle playing Cory’s parents and Riley and Auggie’s grand-parents.

Whether this will be as good as the original series is still to be seen, it would be a big ask. When news of this series first came across the internet many believed it would focus once again around Cory and Topanga’s life and struggles of being parents, not revolving around their 12-year-old daughter.

All shall be revealed in late June of this year however, until then feel free to check out the trailer which was recently revealed by the Disney Channel.

New Epic Rap Battles of History: Rick Grimes vs Walter White

0

I’m a huge fan of the guys over at Epic Rap Battles of History and they’ve certainly had some gems over the years. That said, there have also been some pretty poor attempts that haven’t really played out well.

If you’re not familiar with ERB, the team consists of Peter Shukoff (Nice Peter) and Lloyd Ahlquist (EpicLLOYD) who have had their own YouTube channel since 2011. The guys create a series of videos that pit historical or cultural figures against each other in a rap battle. From Darth Vader vs Hitler to Rasputin vs Stalin, these guys cover it all. One of my favourites came back in 2012 with Master Chief vs Leonidas, partly due to the line ‘more teabags than Lipton’. Yeah, I’m immature, what of it?

However, ERB’s latest offering which was uploaded yesterday has certainly topped the list, pitting two of the biggest lead characters from television against each other. I present you with Rick Grimes vs Walter White.

With some fabulous impersonations and lines such as the repeated ‘Carl stay back’ and ‘no one saw Shane coming, except for your wife’ this really is genius. Who wins? You decide!

Titan Attacks! Review

titan-attacks-store-page

The indie market really seems to have taken off with the adoption of downloadable distribution in the last generation. Without this quick and relatively cheap way to deliver to the consoles masses, it’s unlikely that many of the most cherished games of the last few years would exist and the gap between consoles and PC’s seems to be narrowing all the time.

While many developers have used this new medium to market the sort of works that would likely never make it to retail shelves, others have harnessed the openness of Microsoft and Sony to produce games that seem more like homages to the industry’s roots rather than visionary moves in direction or expressions of heavily artistic sentiment.

20140328_080610_00226211Not to be confused with the similarly-titled anime, Titan Attacks! is a classic example of this type of retro nostalgia. On the surface, it would appear to be like any other Space Invaders clone but what lies beneath is an adoring tribute to the Taito classic with just enough modernity to remain relevant.Originally released for the PC in 2012, Curve Studios have taken advantage of PlayStation Cross-Play to create a genuinely addictive title that just might offer enough to stand out in the bustling crowd.

The game play itself often replicates Space Invaders to a point of plagiarism. With Megadrive-style graphics, the aim is to clear the screen of enemies and avoid taking fire as much as possible. Lives are represented by shield capacity and the longer you live without using the shield, the higher your score multiplier increases. It’s a slightly less tense and more 21st century-gamer friendly experience than Tomohiro Nishikado’s iconic classic though as many of the enemy types do not routinely travel downwards thus allowing for more strategic moves than just clearing the bottom rows first.

Likewise, the audio is less of a blast from the past and more of a trendy chip tune homage in a similar style to Hotline Miami. Some of the music is extremely well designed and PS4 players are likely to get the best experience when connecting a decent pair of earphones to the headphone socket on the DualShock 4 controller. The music speed and tempo does not react to the player’s state ala Space Invaders and is instead just there to be enjoyed and compliment to the retro visuals on-screen.

20140328_071454_00672076A further retro tribute can be seen in the scan lines that frequently gravitate downwards to resemble the fuzziness of a CRT display. Whilst other recent games have used similar effects to achieve a more 80’s-looking result, it feels as though PuppyGames have added this more for the aesthetic benefit that it offers to their artwork rather than to blatantly imitate the competition.

Despite all the retro on display, there’s still enough of the here and now on display to keep modern players interested. PlayStation Cross-Buy enables Vita owners to keep playing on the move but a constantly updated global leaderboard is enough to satiate the hardcore competitors going for months. My position on this scoreboard became quite impressive while I playing the game for review but the game was only available to press and publishers then and it’s highly likely that my scores will be hurtling towards the bottom of the chart within minutes from release.

Titan Attacks is not a game that innovates or experiments in any real or discernible way. Instead it takes a seemingly genuine love for a classic formula and builds upon it using tropes from video games both past and present. The game succeeds in meeting all of the challenges that it sets for itself and provides a charming and genuinely fun experience that could well be worthy of your time. A good all-round effort and fans of indie-retro gaming could definitely find far worse for their money.

Titan Attacks! will be released via the PlayStation Store for PS4, PS3 and Vita on 7th May 2014 in Europe. This review is based only on the PS4 version and using a review build provided by Curve Studios.

Gotham gets a trailer!

1

You can’t see me, but I am doing a little happy dance, because it actually looks amazing! Maybe DC can’t really cut it on the big screen, but it looks like the small screen future is bright for them, at least given the popularity of the already established Arrow.

Ben McKenzie, best known for The OC and Southland, will take on the role of the young Jim Gordon in the promised origin story that will air on FOX, hopefully soon. While no release date for the prequel of the well known story of Bruce Wayne has been set, the trailer, which  features characters such as The Riddler, Poison Ivy and Catwoman, in their younger years, shows us enough to make us want more. My only fear? It’ll air on FOX and they don’t have the best track record when it comes to keeping a show alive. They do have an awesome one when it comes to cancelling things, though.

What do you think about the trailer? Yay or nay?

Toukiden: The Age of Demons Review

0

Toukiden: The Age of Demons is an odd beast. It not only borrows elements from the Monster Hunter franchise, but instead copies them like for like, under the disillusioned hope that it can differentiate itself enough from it’s source material. In doing so, however, it somehow manages to make itself less appealing than it’s primary influence, instead trying to throw some sort of narrative on top of the whole affair, as well as diminishing the difficulty and strategy that Monster Hunter fans have known to come and love. Is it still fun though?

It’s a standard affair from the get-go. Basic character customisation ensues, including both sexes to choose from, with the standard gravity defying Japanese hair configurations that we’ve seen across multiple games before. You choose a name, and you’re set into the wide open world almost immediately, after a tutorial-type fight with a large beastie. Obviously you’ll choose your weapon type, but the basics are in here. Large sword that’s average and easy to you? Check. Dual knives that are weaker, but give you speed as an advantage? Present. See, you’re a Slayer (not in the Buffy-eqsque way unfortunately), but due to the nonsensical narrative that happens both before and after the fight, you’ll soon switch off entirely and just skip through it. It doesn’t improve after. Every game mechanic has some back story as to why they’re important, and what purpose they serve, but it all ends up falling on deaf ears. A “Mitama” is an example of this. In the story, it’s the soul of a fallen warrior that has been taken by an Oni. All you’ll care about is that it provides extra buff’s to your character to make them that bit more proficient at killing generic, weak enemies.

The tutorial enemy, out in the wild

Regardless, you join your band of merry , albeit generic, heroes and slay things, much like the mission structure of Monster Hunter. You do this by talking to a “quest-giver” (for lack of a better title) in your small, lifeless village, that contains blacksmiths, venders, and your own house. Can you see what I’m trying to get at yet? This game is, fundamentally, a re-skinned version of one of Capcom’s greatest titles, and it doesn’t feel ashamed to show it. Other games that are akin to the MH formula have always tried to differentiate themselves enough to warrant a purchase from the consumer, and Soul Sacrifice comes to mind. It manages to overlay an interesting narrative on top of everything that MH had, including a different combat style that features deep, impactful choices. The combat in Toukiden holds no real weight, making your swings feel pathetic the whole time, regardless of what you’re slashing.

Enemies are, admittedly, more fun to take down with friends

That’s not to say this is an appalling game though. Whilst it doesn’t hold a candle to the source material and it’s main inspiration, it is still fairly enjoyable to smash through the standard array of enemies, which grow in size throughout your progress through the missions. Admittedly, the “Kill X (insert creature name here)” missions did get repetitive a lot quicker than MH, but this may be due to the lack in difficulty as previously mentioned, even with the larger beasts. Multiplayer itself increases the enjoyability of the game somewhat, but the issues are still ingrained in the gameplay mechanics deep enough to prevent truly memorable fights.

The personality of the game itself also gives off a serious one which seemed to fail quite spectacularly. MH has a usually comedic and laid back attitude when in the village, which is in direct contrast when out on the battlefield. Soul Sacrifice has a deep, heavy feeling throughout the entirety of the game, and this is maintained in the narrative and environment. Toukiden, however, features a western vibe that does nothing to enforce the story it is trying to push; It’s just yet another bland backdrop. And, fundamentally, that is the problem with this game. Everything implemented doesn’t hold the ground that Omega Force hoped it would, and doing so has cheapened the experience. With a bit of luck, any future iterations of the Toukiden franchise will alleviate these problems and give the series the characteristic and praise it deserves.

Nintendo: No New Console at E3

0

The legendary games company has crushed rumours of a new system unveiling at next month’s convention.

download (1)

After rumours of a new console started trending on social media, a representative from Nintendo told VideoGamer, ‘I can confirm Nintendo is not revealing any hardware at this year’s E3.’ VideoGamer cited a third-party publisher source with the news that Nintendo would be using E3 to showcase new hardware. Peer Schneider, IGN’s co-founder even reported yesterday that Nintendo was ‘absolutely going to show new hardware.

There have been many calls from industry-watchers for Nintendo to make large changes following the Wii U’s problems. Earlier this year even Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter, went so far as to say Nintendo should ditch the Wii U entirely and publish for rival platforms, biding their time before launching a new console.

Michael Pachter may not be far wrong in his analysis of Nintendo’s recent plight, Microsoft and Sony have dominated the console market in recent times and with Nintendo’s unwillingness to help third party developers for the Wii U. In January Paul Tassi wrote a great article for Forbes in which with the help of an un-named developer who worked on an early 3rd party Wii U title detailed his experience and why there is little to no 3rd party developers working for Nintendo anymore.

Robert Downey Jr Developing Horror/Comedy Film

1

images (4)

Warner Bros have just acquired a film called Cloaked, a pitch that will be scripted by Derek Connolly and the film will be produced by Robert Downey Jr. and his wife Susan Downey. According to all reports, they are keeping news about the new film very much under wraps, however it appears it will be a supernatural horror comedy film, in a similar vein of ‘An American Werewolf in London’. Though it is thought to be skewed more towards the horror than the comedy angle  ‘An American Werewolf’ turned out to be.

Those of you who don’t know about Derek Connolly, the last two films he has written are Jurassic Park and Monster Trucks, both of which are currently in production at Universal and Paramount respectively.

It is as of yet unclear whether or not the main role of the film will be played by the Iron Man star. Robert Downey Jr. is currently reprising his role of billionaire superhero Tony Stark/Iron Man in Joss Whedon’s new Avengers film, ‘The Avengers: Age of Ultron’.

Mike Wolfer talks about new crowdfunding project The Curse Of Ragdoll

0

KSragartdeco

Mike Wolfer veteran writer and artist has worked on Lady Death, Warren Ellis’ Gravel Combat Magician and Garth Ennis’ Stiched amongst others and took some time out of his schdule to talk about his latest project, crowd funding a new book, The Curse Of Ragdoll.

Q: Avoiding spoilers can you give us a brief synopsis of what The Curse of Ragdoll is about?RETAILrag

A: The Curse Of Ragdoll is a 96-page, fully gray-toned, black and white, Gothic horror comic, written and drawn by me, lettered by Natalie Jane, with colour on all covers and art prints by Ceci de la Cruz. If you think “Frankenstein Created Woman” meets “The Abominable Dr. Phibes” meets “Friday The 13th,” you’ve got ‘Ragdoll. The story is set in late 18th Century Europe, and details the mission of vengeance of a patchwork horror with supernatural origins. Having been stitched together from the corpses of many, many women who met untimely and tragic deaths, Ragdoll’s quest is to hunt down each killer of each woman from whom she has been constructed. It’s scary, sexy, gory and romantic, and has everything you’d find in a 1970s Hammer film, or EERIE, CREEPY or Vampirella Magazine.

Q: You mention that The Curse of Ragdoll previously existed in a more “adults only” version for Raw Media Quarterly but you’ve excised the “adults only” material, what was the reasoning behind that, was it unnecessary for the narrative or are you not wanting to be associated with “adults only” material anymore?

A: I certainly have no qualms about creating adult material, or even “adults only” material; most of my work contains some aspect of sexuality. But I’m a realist, and since doing comics pays the bills, I always keep my eye on the marketability of a property. When the first incarnation of Ragdoll saw print, it was for an “adults only” comic anthology, so for the Kickstarter to have wider audience appeal, I decided to remove the “X” panels and do some rewrites to bring it down to an “R.” And a cool perk is that I’ve been able to go back and tweak the art, add totally new pages, and also create an almost entirely new chapter and a brand new ending. As far as the narrative is concerned, you’re absolutely right: The adult material was superfluous to the story. There are still strong sexual elements present, but there was just no need for gratuitous penetration shots.

ragfuturetease

Q: Why did you decide on crowd funding for The Curse Of Ragdoll?

A: This has been a long time coming. I’ve been working for Avatar Press for almost 20 years, and have been handed some pretty sweet gigs (Friday The 13th, Night Of The Living Dead, Lady Death, Warren Ellis’ Gravel Combat Magician, Garth Ennis’ Stiched). But I’ve also been trying to sell them on creator-owned projects, without luck. So I figured, what better way to test the waters and see what kind of fan support I have than to try a Kickstarter for an existing series which practically no one has seen, or even heard of? So I give this one a go, and if it works, it gives me a possible option for self-publishing those projects I’ve been unable to sell to a publisher. As I’ve found in the first day of the launch, I’ve got some incredible fan support, and in the first 24 hours, I’ve already reached 73% of my goal (with 29 days still to go).

Q: There are various rewards available for backers, can you tell us a little about them?

KSragregA: For my first Kickstarter, I’m going very basic. I’ve heard all of the horror stories about how creators have gotten in way over their heads by offering too many rewards which require a huge amount of coordination and production, and inaccurately projected shipping costs which have been complete nightmares. What I’m offering are books, books, books, a little original art, signed and numbered and head sketch editions, and t-shirts. For stretch goals, I have three 11″X17″ art prints planned if we break $6k, $7k and $8k. The Curse Of Ragdoll itself will be available in a Retail Edition, and two Kickstarter Exclusive Editions, the Regular and the Art Deco cover variants. I’m also making the book available in a digital PDF format.

Q: There’s a lot of graphic novels that utilise crowd funding before eventually ending up in comic shops , are there any plans to make this book available outside of this campaign?

A: I have been looking into making arrangements for digital distribution, and I’ll probably look into regular comic shop distribution in the future, but for right now I’m only doing Amazon.com and mail order, as well as selling the book at conventions. The whole point of doing the Kickstarter is to raise the funds to print a slew of books which I can sell over the long haul, and always have in stock to make available to retailers or distributors.
