Geeking Up Baby

0

With mainstream culture seemingly embracing geekdom, or geekiness becoming fashionable and shallow, however you want to look at it, it has become much easier for us to envelop our offspring in an awesome world of superheroes, computer games and obscure movie references. I don’t care where you stand on the indoctrination aspect, whether you just think your kid looks cute in a cape, or you plan to raise you child to be the next Kevin Smith, right now is a great time to equip a tiny geekling!

The Low-Hanging Fruit

It might offend our geeky-hipster sensibilities to suddenly find our favourites available in every high street shop, but who can really argue when you can buy super cute clothing from Marvel, DC, Sanrio and many more in most shops, even Primark and the supermarkets getting in on the action. Primark have recently launched their Marvel collection which has some great baby stuff, and have a good line in onesies for adults and children, including Spidey, Batman, Ghostbusters and Buzz Lightyear. Asda George and F&F at Tesco have some great geeky baby clothes at impulse-buy prices!

This is all thanks to Disney, but we are reaping the rewards! The only downside to this is wishing you could buy all the things in your own size, and only being able to use them for a few months before the little folk get too big (or you could just buy multiple items in lots of sizes when you find something good!).

Digging a Little Deeper

As with most things, if you’re willing to go online and pay a little more there are some amazing costumes for the mini-geeks! ThinkGeek have a baby section with some great clothes including Portal, Minecraft and Star Wars designs. They also have this amazing change bag!

You can get custom designs from plenty of places online: Cafe Press, Threadless and Redbubble all offer babygro’s and kids clothes, with a massive range of designs available.

A Good Education

While I’m proud that my little geek already has a hardback Wolverine anthology it will probably be a few years before he makes the most of it. To really start them off well DC have a range of superhero baby books available which are just brilliant.

Meanwhile Marvel have their Little Golden Book series, telling the legendary stories of our favourite heroes in easy reader, fairytale format.

DC have really embraced this line of books for the younger readers with their Batman Phonics education series, and Marvel have a huge range of colouring and activity books, plus the brilliant My Adventures With The Avengers – one of those books where you submit the child’s details and they send you a personalised story about your kid having adventures with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes!

Start As You Mean To Go On

Part of the problem has to be that many of the geekier hobbies are not too child friendly, but everything can be adapted! For the gamers we have giant foam poly dice – once they can talk they can role play!

There are many advantages to using cloth nappies for babies, they are cheaper in the long term and good for the environment, but best of all you can buy a range of designs including some great geeky nappies!

From these high-end embroidered nappies to the cheaper printed designs there is something for everyone! If you really want to you can commission your own designs from a number of suppliers.

We need to equip these little geeks for the thrilling new world they will be living in, so let’s focus on the basics – HTML for Babies and periodic table building blocks.

Money to Burn?

I could easily bankrupt myself buying just clothes and nappies, let alone the rest of this stuff, but lets say you have recently won the lottery. I’m sure you are just itching to spend crazy amounts of money on bizarre geeky stuff for your new millionaire child.

Fancy prams don’t come cheap, and some of the ‘mainstream’ ones are pretty geeky-looking these days. The Stokke Xplory will set you back at least £600 and looks like something out of The Jetsons. However, the geekiest pram award goes to the Cosatto Pow!, a super cool comic styled limited edition, retailing for about £250-£300 along with matching change bags. To be fair this is actually a reasonable price for a good new pram, and an absolute steal for a pram as cool as that!

The new favourite way of displaying your wealth is by showering your children with expensive unnecessary stuff, especially miniature houses. How else are they supposed to get on the property ladder these days? Playhouses and kids sheds are huge right now with people paying massive amounts of money on what are essentially wendy houses. When I was a kid I made do with my Dekker Toys Tardis playhouse, and it was everything I needed, but I certainly would not refuse one of these amazing hobbit hole playhouses!

If you genuinely want to educate / traumatise your child and spend an extortionate amount of money you can’t go wrong with the full size animatronic replica of the Lost in Space B-9 robot. It is remote controlled and has 511 phrases, and is genuinely aimed at children, although sadly no longer available. It sold for a sweet £25000 so if you really have the cash you could maybe get them to make you one.

In conclusion…

We all look to the future when it comes to our kids, and obviously we want the best for them, but just think for a moment about the future you envisioned when you were a kid. These young ones really are growing up in a brave new world; technology has changed so much about life even now, imagine what it will be like in another 20 years. Even with all the money in the world I doubt you could buy anything that will equip them for the changes and wonders they will witness in their lifetimes, just as we have with the sweeping changes brought by new technology. Sure they can buy a silver jumpsuit if they want, and we all know we could make a flying car if we really tried – we are already living in the future. The geeks have already inherited the Earth, so it makes sense to raise kids that way, but the best we can do for them is to raise them with the values that drew us to these subcultures in the first place – curiosity, creativity and pride!

Good bye, H.R. Giger!

1

hr-giger-headshot-400x260

It looks like we have to say good bye to yet another artist that has influenced generations. Hans Rudolf Giger, known by most through his work on the movie Alien has passed away at age 74. The Swiss artist, who has won an Oscar in 1980 for his Alien design, has also worked on movies such as Dune, Species and Poltergeist II: The Other Side.

The artist die due to injuries suffered in a fall, but his legacy remains. Since 1998 a HR Geiger museum exists, where his own paintings and works are displayed. His influence went beyond working on film, with him being an accomplished sculptor, painter and designer, one that has used his own art as an outlet for his fears, impressing everyone and inspiring many. Describing his own work as biomechanical seems oddly appropriate when looking at the designs he himself names as attracting crazy people, yet I don’t think anyone could be anything other than awed before his work.

Farewell and thank you for everything, Mr. Geiger!

For those of you that want to know more about his life and work, H.R. Giger’s Sanctuary, a documentary featuring his work exists. You can take a look at the trailer below.

First Image of Affleck’s Batman and the Batmobile!

BATFLECK

After Snyder teased us yesterday with a little peek at the Batmobile, today he has given us so much more. Here is our first look at Ben Affleck as Batman, a better picture of the Batmobile and a look at the costume.

What do people think? Excited or disappointed? Do you see influences are previous incarnations? Discuss below or over on our facebook page.

Snyder Gives us a Peek at the Batmobile for Batman vs. Superman

BATMOBILE

Let the teasing commence! Director Zack Synder has released this picture via his twitter account – the Batmobile Affleck’s Batman will be driving in Batman vs. Superman –  that’s a lot of Bat in one sentence. Granted it is just a sneaky peek but intriguingly it was released with this caption…

“Could be time to pull the tarp…Tomorrow?”

Certainly suggesting there will be more to come because quite frankly we’ve been waiting like forever. The first real insight in to the film we’ve had and there is very little to say about it, from what we can see looks cool, which goes without saying because it’s Batman’s car, of course it’s looks cool. Fingers crossed for a full reveal tomorrow.

Geek Poetry Corner

A true poet does not hide, Poseidon. Leave the sea, and face me!
A true poet does not hide, Poseidon. Leave the sea, and face me!

In an effort to inject some culture around these parts, I hereby introduce Geek Poetry Corner, where any budding poets can share their work, assuming it’s got a geeky subject. Whether you consider yourself a poet or, like me, someone with no idea whatsoever and just fancy a bit of fun, get your favourite French beret and/or rhyming dictionary and throw something together and send it in a private message to the facebook, or dropbox it to twitter.

So, awww, here it goes:

“Shapes”

Alone and unaware, amassed in blackness,
Our descent begins, unwished and choiceless.

The void’s cold and unwelcome, we sail, twitch and shift
Our destinies call, we fail, switch and drift

Structures emerge from beyond veiled depths
Sculptures of pain, colossal and deft;
Their genesis alien, their purpose bereft,
Vile and cyclopean, damaged and cleft.

As I fall closer, my thoughts coalesce;
They’re made from my brothers, compiled in death!

Hopeless towers climb from fractures,
their corrosive roots hewn into Atlas;
Huddled derelicts connect in the cold,
The titan shivers, upholding the load.

I crash to the surface, raking the crust
I slot into place, barely disturbing the dust.

Congealed in a line, my brothers in flux
We all start to vanish, we pass panicked looks.

The line is deleted,
The world is depleted.

Forever we pass, into the abyss;
Forever forgotten, the shapes of Tetris.

If you made it this far, here’s some metal:

First trailer for NBC’s Constantine appears and it’s pretty damn good.

0

Constantine

The first trailer for NBC’s upcoming “Constantine” has just appeared and contrary to what lots of people were probably thinking it actually looks good, really good.

There’s been a lot of internet chatter about how the show would turn out and also exactly what it was going to be based on given that the Hellblazer comic, John Constantine’s home for 20+ years, is infamous for being squarely aimed at adult readers whereas the character’s new comic home “Constantine” is distinctly less so.

That question has been answered as the trailer features the script “Based on the DC comic Hellblazer”.

It’s not just lip service either as the trailer shows John as an inmate at the Ravenscar institute for the mentally deranged undergoing shock therapy, a major part in Hellblazer mythology, before introducing Lucy Griffith’s Liv, Liv is the daughter of one of Constantine’s old friends. Confused and traumatised by horrific visions and nightmares she has the gift for seeing the world as it really is, but unlike Constantine, she is completely new to the experience and, as Constantine says:

“Now that you can see these things, they can see you. And they don’t like to be seen.”

Matt Ryan not only looks the part of John Constantine, but also seems to get his attitude down too. Whilst expecting the show to be filled with John’s standard profanity is a bit of an ask, he does manage to get off a “bollocks” in the trailer and it also seems to capture his general not really wanting to get involved vibe too, which is key to the character.

The trailer also features Harold Perrineau’s Manny, a character created for the show, who is possibly an angel or demon, having a rather ominous conversation with Ryan’s Constantine in a smoking crater.

Whilst the show is yet to air and it’s not clear if there’s going to be a chief antagonist or whether it’s Perrineau, it has to be said that this trailer does a lot of things right. So it’s not set in London and apparently John might have kicked his chain smoking but this still looks pretty damn good.

TV: Round up of the Renewals, Cancellations and Newcomers

0

It is that time of year again where we find out that Fox are inevitably cancelling a show much loved by fans and shows we don’t really care about, get another series. I bring you a round up of who made it and whose time is up in the land of television, as well as the news stuff we can look forward to.

Let us start with the good news. Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D has been given a second season, some of you may groan, probably those of you who gave up a while ago, but as I expected this series stepped it up in the last few episodes and with the series finale just around the corner, we’re expecting it to end on a high.

Hayley-Atwell-Marvel-Agent-Carter-610x343

In other exciting Marvel news the much rumoured Agent Carter series has been given the green light by ABC and will see Hayley Atwell reprise her role. Carrying on from the short featured on the Iron Man 3 DVD where Carter, doing her menial desk job after the loss of Steve Rogers, receive a phone call that informs her she is the new co-head of an agency named S.H.I.E.L.D. Set in 1946 the series will tell the story of how Carter balances her boring desk job and secret missions. The official description reads “Working for the covert SSR (Strategic Scientific Reserve), Peggy must balance doing administrative work and going on secret missions for Howard Stark all while trying to navigate life as a single woman in America, in the wake of losing the love of her life – Steve Rogers.”

Over on the other side DC have done very well with Constantine, Flash and iZombie all getting full series orders.

The Flash was originally intended to have a back door pilot in Arrow, but with such a good response from fans to Grant Gustin‘s Barry Allen it was decided to give the series a traditional pilot. Anticipation surrounding this series is high and CW are under a lot of pressure to do the this incarnation of the Flash justice.

Constantine stars Matt Ryan as the supernatural detective in the fantasy drama based on the comic character. NBC sums up the series as this “Armed with a ferocious knowledge of the dark arts and his wickedly naughty wit, he [Constantine] fights the good fight – or at least he did. With his soul already damned to hell, he’s decided to leave his do-gooder life behind, but when demons target Liv (Lucy Griffiths), the daughter of one of Constantine’s oldest friends, he’s reluctantly thrust back into the fray – and he’ll do whatever it takes to save her.”

izombie-big

The one I am particulary looking forward to is iZombie from CW. Based on the DC Comic, iZombie revolves around a med student played by Rose McIver, who finds herself as a zombie and gets a job in a coroners office, where she has access to reluctantly eat the brains she requires. Turns out the eating the brain has consequences and she finds herself able to inheriting the memories of the deceased. Using this knowledge she helps her medical examiner boss and a homicide detective to solves murders.

With a new trailer we also get confirmation that Fox have ordered at least 13 episodes of Gotham, though this comes as no surprise. Revolving around the origins of many a villain and hero from Gotham, the series will focus on Detective Jim Gordon and will feature the murder of the Wayne family, the young grieving Bruce, Catwoman, The Riddler, The Penguin, Poison Ivy all before they became the notorious characters known to us all. The latest cast picture also hints that we may get to see the Joker (it’s tiny, but just there at the top, is a pack of cards…)
gotham-cast-photo-fox

There are many new and interesting series to look forward to including Messengers, An ominous darkness invades a seemingly serene sunflower farm in North Dakota, and the Solomon family is torn apart by suspicion, mayhem and murder. Forever – A 200-year-old man works in the New York City Morgue trying to find a key to unlock the curse of his immortality starring Ioan Gruffudd.  Last Man on Earth, a single camera comedy created by and starring Will Forte, and though information is sparse, as the title would suggest, it focuses on the last remaining human on the planet.

Other series of note that have been renewed include Castle, Once Upon a Time, Hannibal, Elementary, Arrow and  Modern Family.

Now for the bad news. There are two shows that have been cancelled that have resulted in internet uproar. Firstly, Almost Human. Starring Karl Urban, a show that I feel filled a gap in sci fi genre. The cop buddy format focused on a not too distant future where human and android must partner up to fight crime. It had sci-fi, action and elements of comedy, a good mix by anyone’s standard. Once again Fox screwed this show over by moving it to a Monday night and airing them out of order – why is it Fox do this? Just doesn’t make any sense. Outrage on this cancellation has resulted in an online petition demanding renewal. Click here to add your name.

Community - Season 5

Community is the second show that has caused the internets to weep. Announced only yesterday,  NBC have confirmed there will be no sixth season of the cult comedy. Whilst people state their outrage, there are whispers of hope circulating suggesting the likes of Netflix or Amazon may be interested, but is this only hope and not confirmation. Fans are at least commiserating that the comedy is going out on a high with creator Dan Harmon back at the helm.

A show that didn’t even make it to a series is Supernatural: Bloodlines. The back door pilot aired just last week and was not very well received by the huge and influential Supernatural fanbase. CW aren’t ruling out some kind of spin-off but for now it’s back to the drawing board for the creators. A few more cancellations include J.J Abrams’ Revolution, Tomorrow People, Crisis and The Carrie Diaries.

What do we think? Which cancellations outrage you? Which shows are you most looking forward to in the 2014-2015? As always comment below.

Da Vinci’s Demons gets a third season!

0

I’d apologize for my excitement, but I really see no reason to do so. The Starz show, which takes a look at Leonardo Da Vinci’s life and work, takes leave of historical accuracy, at least partially, yet it has kept both history buffs and lovers of good television entertained for two consecutive seasons. With a stellar cast (Tom Riley, Elliot Cowan, Alexander Siddig, Laura Haddock, Eros Vlahos, Lara Pulver and Blake Ritson – to name a few ) and an interesting storyline, which combines historical events with myths and fantasy, Da Vinci’s Demons seems to be here to stay, hopefully for a few more seasons.

Tom Riley plays a very different Da Vinci from the one we’re usually accustomed to, either from literature, other films/series or even self-portraits of the man. His approach to the character, as well as the added quirky tics, an antagonistic relationship with authority figures and a whole lot of heart (not to mention suffering) made him a fan favourite, so I can’t say I’m anything but pleased to hear the news. With the sleuth of shows getting axed recently, hearing that at least one series that I like has survived made my day.

Take a look at the trailer for season two, which takes us from Renassaince Florence to the New World, and if you haven’t watched the show yet, get to it. You won’t regret it.

Destiny Beta is coming in July 2014

0

destiny1

Destiny is a post apocalyptic first-person shooter in which Guardians, the front line fighters and last line of defence defending the last human city on Earth, eagerly awaited by gamers from the creators of Halo, Activition and Bungie.

Bungie announced over twitter yesterday that Destiny will be opening it’s Beta in July, giving players the chance to get hands on with what is expected to be the most expensive game ever made. With an estimated $500 million target for development and promotion, Destiny is set to rival summer blockbusters with it’s budget and from what we’ve seen of the game so far, it’s could counter even Halo’s decade long reign as the sci-fi shooter of choice.

What is already known is that competitive multiplayer won’t be available at launch but it is expected to have item trading and the capability for users to generate their own content for others to play, akin to GTA Online’s content creator. Furthermore, saves made to cloud storage will carry over from Xbox 360 to Xbox one and from PS3 to PS4, making this truly a next-gen friendly game without alienating the majority of players who still use last gen consoles.

destinyguardians

With Titanfall released earlier this year, it can only be speculated how much the lack of multiplayer will hurt the title’s release should these expectations prove to be true. However, with Activision Blizzard at the helm, we can expect that multiplayer will have a decade of experience from the hugely successful World of Warcraft behind it. What does this mean? To be honest, we don’t know. But with the sheer amount of expertise, talent and cold hard cash behind Destiny, we can expect it to deliver a pretty big bang when it lands.

‘Mother Russia Bleeds’ Old School Beat ’em up Meets no Holds Barred Brutality

0

Mother Russia Bleeds is an upcoming old school style scrolling beat ’em up. Inspired by classic brawlers, like Final Fight, the graphical approach is 2 dimensional pixel art with a modern touch. Unlike the classics of old, Mother Russia Bleeds is a hard edged brutal ultra-violent affair with a story set in an alternate 80’s USSR featuring an imprisoned anti-hero with a drug addiction and vengeance on his mind.

The game, which looks set to be everything that the mainstream media says is wrong with games, is being developed by indie French developer Le Cartel and will enable up to 4 players to co-op as the anti-hero and his cell mates as they wreak havoc and cause carnage.

Mother Russia Bleeds is set to appear in 2015 for PC, Mac and Linux.
