Ridley Scott’s Halo movie being shot in Belfast N.Ireland

Well she might have some questionable politics but where N.Ireland is flourishing is within the film/TV industry. Game of thrones and now Halo!

According to the Belfast Telegraph, Ridley Scott has started filming the long awaited Halo movie … lets say that again Halo fan boys and fan girls; HALO MOVIE! (joooooooooyyyyy) and it is being shot in the Titanic quarter of Belfast.

Many will obviously be dubious about a Halo, live action, film but if it’s as half as good as the web-series, Forward Unto Dawn, then we will be onto a winner… come on, Ridley Scott.. its got to be good.. right?

Full story can be found below and on the Belfast Telegraph website HERE

Scott‘s hugely-anticipated Halo project, set for release later this year, has been spotted shooting in the Titanic Quarter of the city, with Battlestar Galactica’s Sergio Mimica-Gezzan on board as director.

The confirmation comes just months after Microsoft initially quashed rumours of a Ridley Scott Halo film.

However, a spokesman for the company behind the multi-billion dollar sci-fi video game franchise confirmed filming was now under way.

He said: “343 Industries, Xbox Entertainment Studios and Scott Free Productions are currently working on a Halo digital feature project to be released later this year.

“The project will be executive produced by Ridley Scott and Scott Free TV president, David Zucker. Sergio Mimica-Gezzan will direct.”

Northern Ireland Screen confirmed it was funding the project.

It is understood filming took place recently at the Titanic Centre and atBelfast‘s urban sports park, T13. Sources said a massive production was under way.

Details of the project have been closely guarded to date, but according to reports, Prison Break creator Paul Scheuring has written the script while online news organisation The Wrap claims The Good Wife’s Mike Colter is to star in the project.

The Halo digital feature is a different project from the television series thatSteven Spielberg is working on for Xbox One.

More details about the film, including additional cast, are due to be announced next month.

While the Scott and Spielberg projects are completely separate, Mimica-Gezzan has previously collaborated with the latter, having worked as first assistant director on Schindler’s List and Saving Private Ryan.

English film-maker Scott, meanwhile, has worked on numerous movies including Gladiator, Black Hawk Down and Kingdom Of Heaven as well as sci-fi classics Alien, Blade Runner and Prometheus. Halo is set during an interstellar war between humanity and The Covenant, an alien alliance that threatens mankind’s existence.

Secret Cinema presents… Back to the Future

Blade Runner

This Summer, London’s ‘Secret Cinema’ is bringing the entire town from Back to the Future to the UK at a secret location for very different screenings of the classic film and what is sure to be an amazing experience.

For those of you unfamiliar with the Secret Cinema, the experience offers an incredible opportunity to see a film in a whole new way. Events in the past have included If, Funny Face, Ghostbusters and Blade Runner.

Some of the major scenes from the film are going to be recreated at a top secret location for the unique experience which will offer a totally immersive screening like no offer. The organisers are building the town of Hill Valley in a secret London location, even transporting the audience between the different areas in a DeLorean DMC-12. Part of the audience will play out Marty McFly’s narrative, being transported through time in the DeLorean. The rest of the audience will become part of the two different time zones that Marty travelled between, 1955 and thirty years later in 1985.

The event will even involve an after-party in the form of the ‘Enchantment Under the Sea Prom’ where Marty’s parents first fell in love. This part will take place in venue close to the secret location of the screening. There will be a battle of the bands competition to determine who plays at the ‘dance’ each night.

Secret Cinema presents Back to the Future will take place from 25th July to 14th August this year with 12 screenings, with tickets going on sale at 1pm on Wednesday 4th June. Check out www.secretcinema.org/tickets for tickets when they go on sale. This is most definitely one not to be missed.

Two More Confirmed for Star Wars: Episode VII Cast

0

Disney & Lucasfilm have confirmed that Oscar winner, Lupita Nyong’o and Game of Thrones star, Gwendoline Christie will be joining the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII.

LupitaGwen

Lupita Nyong’o’ involvement had been much rumoured in recent weeks, after it leaked she had met with JJ Abrams, shortly before the Academy Awards. Nyong’o went on to win an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress with her breakout role in 12 Years a Slave. Gwendoline Christie is best known for playing Brienne of Tarth – a fan favourite –  from the highly acclaimed HBO series, Game of Thrones and will also be appearing in Hunger Games: Mocking Jay – Part1 as Commander Lyme.

“I could not be more excited about Lupita and Gwendoline joining the cast of Episode VII,” says Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. “It’s thrilling to see this extraordinarily talented ensemble taking shape.” The casting of two female roles is a much welcome one, after the first casting announcement resulted criticism for the lack of females and diversity.

The two actressess join John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow along with the original stars of the Saga  – Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker.

Star Wars: Episode VII is set for worldwide release December 18th, 2015.

Mortal Kombat X Announced!

0

New Mortal Kombat announced! The trailer features typical MK blood, gore, fantasy violence, new play mechanics and Ed Boon’s well-established pro-Scorpion bias. Naturally, being early footage, it’s nowhere close to the fluidity of MK9, but the X-rays examples are brutal and the fighting, if it’s representative, could be a significant change from established beat-em-up standards of animation, perhaps hinting at on-the-fly animation adaptation, as well as level weapons? It could well be possible with the next gen consoles, and I can’t wait to see more!

“Fueled by next-gen technology, Mortal Kombat X combines unparalleled, cinematic presentation with dynamic gameplay to create an unprecedented Kombat experience.”

The track on the trailer is “Can’t Be Stopped” by Wiz Khalifa.

The Squidder, the subject a rather successful Kickstarter from acclaimed writer and artist Ben Templesmith (as featured here), is set to appear from IDW beginning in July, thanks to an agreement between the publisher and 44FLOOD.

Backers of the Kickstarter campaign will be getting the story in graphic novel format (or the swanky slipcased “Kraken” edition) but for those that didn’t contribute to the campaign the story will be issued as a limited series. Templesmith has stated that the Kickstarter edition will be different, the “Director’s Cut” featuring additional scenes not available in the individual issues.

For those not in the know The Squidder is about an old soldier from a forgotten war in a post-apocalyptic world that has left him behind. It features horror, fantasy, and Lovecraftian elements, as well as black humour.

Templesmith has a history with the indie publisher, his work with Steve Niles on “30 Days Of Night” which rejuvenated both vampires in comics and horror comics in general was just the first to appear, with his body of work for the publisher including his own creations like the critically acclaimed Wormwood Gentleman Corpse and Welcome to Hoxford

Wigan Comic Con – Sunday 22nd June

0

With MCM London Comic Con over and a break from the bigger conventions such as London Film and Comic Con and MCM Manchester until July, I’d like to turn our lovely Geek Pride fans’ attention to a new event taking place in the North West in June.

1545104_389316641212706_1937253481_n

On Sunday 22nd June, Robin Park Arena will play host to the very first Wigan Comic Con, a convention set up in conjunction with the Funky Figures store in Wigan, which is owned by organiser Paul Prescott. Running from 11am-4pm with early bird entry from 10am, Wigan Comic Con promises to be a great day out for con newbies as well as seasoned attendees.

kenny-bakerFor such a young event, the convention already has a few impressive guests lined up who will be appearing and signing on the day. Star Wars fans will certainly not be disappointed, with appearances from Kenny Baker (R2D2), Jeremy Bulloch (Boba Fett) and Femi Taylor (Oola in Episode VI). Star Wars sculptor and artist, Brian Ian Muir, the man responsible for Darth Vader, the Storm Trooper armour and more, will also be attending the event.

Shaune Harrison is another interesting guest on the bill, a man who has worked on prosthetics and special effects make up for many films including Phantom Menace, the Harry Potter series, World War Z and more. He is also currently working on Avengers 2: The Age of Ultron.

Doctor Who star, Colin Baker, will surely be another popular guest, along with convention regular Lee Townsend. If you’re not familiar with his work, Lee Townsend is an artist that has been involved with Marvel, DC, Disney and Dreamworks and is perhaps most known for his work with Spider-Man and other Marvel favourites. Writer and Editor Alan Cowsill will also be attending, as well a former cop and journalist turned writer, Paul Finch.

It’s not all about the guests though, with the promise of lots of awesome displays and a great variety of stalls on offer as well as cosplay competitions. There will be an appearance from the infamous Transformers car, the Bumblebee Camaro and a Simpsons TV set style piece. There will be two competitions, one for the under 16s and another for the overs, which offers a chance for seasoned cosplayers to compete as well as getting the younger ones involved. Both competitions will feature prizes for individual categories as well as overall winners, make sure to check out the links featured at the end of the preview for more information.

There will also be some great goodies on offer such as retro games, cupcakes and American candy, original artwork, comic books, jewellery, collectibles and much, much more. I’ll even be attending and popping my comic con stall cherry with my little business, Geek Treats, selling cute and kitsch geeky jewellery and original comic book canvases. Nice little plug there, eh?

Considering this is the first full event for Wigan Comic Con, it looks set to be off to a great start. Geek Pride will be attending and covering the convention, so expect lots of fabulous photos and interviews, along with a full review following the event. General entry tickets are available online for only £6 for adults and £4 for under 14s (under 5s are free), but unfortunately the early bird tickets have sold out.

For tickets more information about Wigan Comic Con, please check out their website www.wigancomiccon.co.uk or Facebook page here where you can also find a link to the event. Those of you in the North West, please help support local up and coming events by heading over to Wigan on 22nd June and checking out all of the hard work that has gone into spreading geek pride out of the big cities and across the UK!

Marvel Casts Josh Brolin as Thanos

0

Finally, we know who will be taking up the role of Thanos in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe. According to Latino Review, who broke the news, Josh Brolin, who will also be starring in Frank Miller’s upcoming Sin City: A Dame To Kill For, will be providing the voice of The Mad Titan in Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Not thrilled by the prospect of a date with Death…

Since Thanos’s first appearance in the post-credits scene of The Avengers, in which he was revealed to be behind Loki’s efforts to enslave the Earth, little has been said about the role that he would play in the future of the franchise and, indeed, who would be playing him. However, the recent Phase II films have heavily hinted that the series is building up to a climax based on the Infinity Gauntlet series of comics, in which Thanos, empowered by the Infinity Stones, becomes all-powerful and takes on The Avengers.

While it is unlikely that Thanos will serve as the primary antagonist of GOTG – Lee Pace’s Ronan the Accuser will be filling that role – it is very likely that the purple titan will be the one pulling the strings, as in The Avengers. Given that Loki will reportedly be taking a back seat for a while, not making an appearance in Age of Ultron, we’re hoping that Brolin will be able to provide us with another charismatic and engaging villain, equal to Tom Hiddleston’s fantastic performance. He’s got the acting calibre to pull it off, let’s hope that Marvel put it to good use!

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy will be hitting UK cinemas on July 31st.

Emmerich to Launch New Stargate Movie Trilogy

0

stargate

Roland Emmerich is set to direct a new “reimagined” trilogy of Stargate films based on the 1994 film Stargate he directed and co-wrote with Dean Devlin. Devlin is set to produce the trilogy with MGM and Warner Bros backing the project.

However, with Emmerich pretty much tied up at the moment on the elusive Independence Day sequel which has a release date of 2016 and working on the gay rights drama, Stonewall, it may be a number of years before any progress is made on the Stargate trilogy.

There is absolutely no more information about the project at this stage. We don’t know if they will remake the original and continue the trilogy from there or whether the films will act as a continuation of the original film. It also begs the question as to whether Kurt Russell and James Spader will be involved in some way.

It has been 20 years since O’Neill and Jackson first stepped through the gate, the original film then went on to spawn three highly successful spin off series – SG1, Atlantis & Universe (okay, two successful series and Universe) creating a massive franchise and a loyal fan base, some of which are still campaigning for Universe to get another series. Sadly, it is unlikely the canon from the TV series will feature in the new films, but with a wealth of alien life form created from the series, Emmerich could use it as inspiration.

We will endeavour to keep you up to date as news comes, in the meantime what are your thoughts? As always comment below or on the facebook page.

Solar Freaking Roadways!

0

Remember when we were kids and we used to imagine that the future will look a lot more like Star Trek and a lot less like the ’90s? Yeah? So do I. It’s almost like we’re stuck being “primitive”. No wonder no alien race has made contact yet (those cow kidnappers don’t count!).

But let’s get back on track and focus on Solar Freaking Roadways!! Hey, it’s what they call it, not I. These roadways would be, according to the theory behind it, self-sustainable, able to generate their own energy and support the power grid of the country that uses them, while at the same time they would require no repairs that block traffic for days on end, they would need not be painted, since the safety elements (road paint, car park spots and so on) can be programmed by a computer to simply show up wherever they are needed, by lighting up one set of LED lights or another. They don’t make pancakes, but other than that they seem to be as close to perfect as they could get in terms of the benefits they bring.

It sounds promising enough, but like most promising ideas, it needs a lot of backing. It’s why an indiegogo campaign was started. And guess what? They already gathered up more than the million dollar goal they had set for themselves. If you feel like supporting this idea, just click here and https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/solar-roadways#home make it happen.

Watch the promotional video below and try to ignore the amount of times you’ll hear “Solar freaking roadways!”, because it’s definitely worth a listen.

Think it could be made possible? Letting aside the political and economic issues that would bankrupt those providing classical forms of energy, the things that this project promises sound amazing. Would you back it? Do you support it? Yes, no, why?
