Sink your teeth into Deep Silver’s Escape Dead Island

0

The Dead Island franchise seems to be as alive and active as ever, as today it was announced that, in addition to the forthcoming Dead Island 2, and MOBA Dead Island: Epidemic, Deep Silver have also been working away on the cel-shaded, survival-mystery game, Escape Dead Island.

In a post on the Playstation Blog, Alex Toplansky, Senior Narrative Producer at Deep Silver, had the following to say:

“Escape represents a crucial bridge between the events of Dead Island and Dead Island 2, and will finally reveal the origins of the virus, and even some tantalising clues as to where the events are going to lead… but it’s going to be up to you to decide what to believe. That’s because this story-driven single player game is played through the eyes of Cliff Calo, who’s watching his world unravel.”

“Cliff is the spoiled son of a powerful media mogul who has stolen a yacht with his friends determined to film the documentary of the century: Exposing the truth about the Banoi outbreak to the public. Their plan: infiltrate the archipelago’s top-secret quarantined island of Narapela and document everything.”

Players will apparently feel more exposed in this chapter of the Dead Island franchise, as Cliff will be completely vulnerable to the zombie virus and, at the start of the game, will find himself without the means to properly fight off the shuffling hordes of the undead, leading to a far more stealthy, tactical approach to most situations. On top of all this, he appears to be losing his mind a bit:

“Cliff struggles with his own sanity as the world around him begins to become increasingly unpredictable. Time distorts and folds in on itself; strange messages appear and impossible events shatter reality. Oceans turn to blood, containers plummet from the clear sky… If Cliff had any thoughts about this being a routine documentary, he’d be ‘dead’ wrong.”

As you can see from the trailer and screenshots, the game is set to take a quite radical visual departure from the previous iterations of the franchise, with heavy comic-book style, cel-shaded, almost surreal graphics being employed. In some shots, it almost bears a striking resemblance to Telltale Games’ The Walking Dead series, which utilises a similar artistic direction. Whether this departure will have much of a bearing on the overall gameplay is yet to be seen, but it certainly does look like a gorgeous little game!

That being said, the title will not be coming to next-gen consoles, only seeing a release on PS3, Xbox 360, and PC, which could represent some caution on Deep Silver’s behalf – perhaps they’re unwilling to take a risk on this quite diverse entry in the franchise by developing it for the Xbox One and PS4.

Either way, hitting shelves in Fall 2014, Escape Dead Island looks set to be a fresh and unique take on the Dead Island franchise and will undoubtedly fill the void until Dead Island 2 comes out next year.

Yahoo to the Rescue as Community gets it’s Sixth Season

0

As all hope was lost and fans prepared to mourn the cult comedy, in swoops Yahoo! and pulls Community to safety for a sixth season and just in the nick of time. On the 30th June the actor’s contracts were set to expire releasing them from any commitment rendering the #SixSeasonsAndAMovie hashtag nothing more than a meme set to be mocked by social media trolls.

Thankfully the fans can rejoice, knowing their loyalty and campaigning have actually worked for once, as Community is confirmed for 13 episode run with Dan Harmon and Chris Mckenna at the helm, to be aired on Yahoo! Screen. Season 5 regulars – Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Yvette Nicole Brown, Alison Brie, Danny Pudi, Ken Jeong and Jim Rash will all be returning.

happy-abed

Via Yahoo! “I am very pleased that ‘Community’ will be returning for its predestined sixth season on Yahoo,” Harmon said in a statement. “I look forward to bringing our beloved NBC sitcom to a larger audience by moving it online. I vow to dominate our new competition. Rest easy, ‘Big Bang Theory.’ Look out, ‘Bang Bus!”

Series star McHale added, “The reports of our cancellation have been greatly exaggerated.” —Mark Twain   (The other version of this quote has been wrong for years). # SixSeasonsAndaMovie is real.   Thank you Sony. Thank you Yahoo. Thank you Dan Harmon. And thank you to the greatest   f%$#ing fans in the history of the human race. It’s the internet. We can swear now.”

With the sixth season confirmed it is highly likely a movie will follow since Harmon once said “I mean, if they do a sixth season, I have to participate. And having done that, if the movie has to be made out of clay and duct tape in my basement, then that’s how the movie will be made, because there has to be closure.”

Community’s journey has not been an easy one with the ‘will they, won’t they’ cancel it rumours for years, cast members leaving and the departure and subsequent reinstatement of it’s creators; yet despite all this it seems the fans won out in the end. Does that mean there is still hope for Firefly?

Bryan Singer teases X-Men: Apocalypse script on Instagram

0

Oh, Bryan Singer, you tease! The X-Men director has taken to Instagram to share a tiny snippet of the X-Men: Apocalypse script with us:

bryan-singer-teases-x-men-apocalypse-script

Though very little is given away, the shot looks like a follow-up to the post-credit scene that featured at the end of X-Men: Days of Future Past, with mentions of a ‘sprawling battle’ near the Nile, watched over by the Four Horsemen. Presumably, we’ll be kicking off Apocalypse by learning about En Sabah Nur (aka, the titular Apocalypse) and his experiences as the first mutant in Ancient Egypt.

It looks like fans of the series should keep an eye on Bryan Singer’s Instagram account in the future to see if he’ll spare us any more morsels of information to feast on until the film hits the silver screen on May 27, 2016.

Zombicide Season 3 hits Kickstarter!

Zombicide is back for Season 3! Recently launched on Kickstarter (go here for the link), the latest instalment has already smashed its goal of $100,000 – in three days!

As always, a lot of stuff in the box!

So why all the hubbub? Well, the first Season of Zombicide was a phenomenal hit for the company Coolminiornot, which raised $781,597 as it funded. They later built on this success with Season 2, adding new survivors, new zombie types and new settings to their post-apocalyptic world of zombie infestation.

Season 3 (the Rue Morgue) is promising to deliver even bigger changes. Set a while after the initial outbreak, the world has become dilapidated, with buildings crumbling and resources becoming scarce. Only the most hardened have survived, with groups of tried and tested warriors inhabiting the crumbling cities.

The new A-Bomb Abomination!

But what does this mean to the gamers? Well here is a few of the new features in Season 3:

– New zombies: Skinner Zombies, Crawlers, and the A-Bomb Abomination!

– A plethora of new weapons and items to scrounge from the humanities leftovers

– New setting tiles, introducing the hospital. Is it chocked full of supplies, or just the shuffling corpses of the deceased?

– Competitive play: Teams! Players can now square off against other groups of survivors led by other players in a bid to reach their objectives first. But beware; the zombies don’t get any easier!

– New Team actions, allowing for military style tactics where all the survivors coordinate into single Actions such as group Move or Shoot.

The newest feature: Team play

Not only that, but the first expansion for Season 3, Angry neighbours, has been included as part of the Kickstarter campaign, promising to introduce even more variety into the mix (I’m particularly intrigued by the Seeker zombies that hunt you mercilessly!).

Intrigued? I know I am, as I loved the first two Seasons and the third is promising to be a great addition to the series. Check out the video below for more details!

Henry Cavill’s first photo as Clark Kent – Batman v Superman

0

We’ve all been dying to get more news from the set of the long awaited Batman vs. Superman and they finally gave us a photo. It’s not much – and it’s only a picture of Superman’s “cunningly” crafted disguise, Clark Kent – but hey, it gives me hope that more is to follow.

The picture was released via Twitter by The Royal Marines Charitable Trust Fund that Henry Cavill shows support for in the photo. The organization’s purpose is to help Royal Marines, both in active duty and retired, to have a better life quality.

Henry Cavill managed to kill two birds with one stone with this one, both giving us what we so much needed after a bit of a dry spell as far as Batman v Superman is concerned and raising awareness for this charitable organization.

first-photo-of-henry-cavill-as-clark-kent-in-batman-v-supermanStay tuned for more, we’ll make sure to bring you fresh news about the movie (that we still have to wait two years for, but who’s counting, right?!).

The Lord Inquisitor – “Grey Knights” Teaser

0

If I am to be honest I had long given up on there being any half decent looking Warhammer 40k movie after the abortion that was Ultramarines. A shame as the wealth of backstory and imagination behind the entire franchise is absolutely huge and begging / deserving a good… nay, great conversion to the big screen; or at least youtube.

Having given up all hope of this every happening, I was randomly trawling through the tinterwebs last year when I stumbled across a fan project called ‘The Lord Inquisitor,’ A 40k fan film being made AND (the most important thing here) endorsed (or permitted anyway) by GW; to the point that they actually gave TLI team a Black Library writer to help out, in the form of Aaron Dembski-Bowden.

I followed the news on their website, facebook and youtube closely; hoping and praying to the God Emperor that it would do the franchise justice.

It was then, after many teasers and garbled messages, seeping through the warp, that a new teaser trailer materialised in real space….

Granted the voice over isn’t the best but it looks absolutely superb and if the finished product ends up anything like this, then I will be a very happy Warhammer Geek.

Agree / disagree? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

Another insight of The Lord Inquisitor project created and directed by Erasmus Brosdau. This teaser shows a glimpse of the space marines called “Grey Knights”, which will have an important role in the full movie.
Also this teaser marks a new era for independant film making as the whole sequence was entirely rendered in realtime using the not yet released CryEngine Cinebox.

This teaser was rendered on one GTX 780 ti.

Hanna-Barbera’s Wacky Races comes to life in new ad

0

2014-06-27_2102

The classic cartoon from Hanna-Barbera, which was originally broadcast in the 60’s, before becoming a regular early morning cartoon fixture in the UK, featured a whole host of bizarre characters and equally bizarre vehicles who would race against each other in each episode. Characters would often engage in underhand tactics to try and gain an advantage, one of the most well recognised being Dick Dasterdly and his side kick the sniggering dog, Muttley.

The ad directed by Antoine Bardou-Jacquet for Young & Rubicam Brasil features a live action take on the classic cartoon, as a driver races characters such as the cavemen Slag Brothers in the Boulder Mobile, the Gruesome Twosome with their stylized hearse, the pint-sized Ant Hill Mob gangsters in the Bulletproof Bomb, and Dick Dasterdly in the Mean Machine, amongst others.

After seeing off the other drivers, he finally stops to come to the aid of Penelope Pitstop at the side of the road where her car the Compact Pussycat has apparently broken down.

War Thunder – E3 2014

0

War Thunder is a game that has been around for almost two years, and it spent its first year pretty much in MMO obscurity due to its lack of serious visual presentation at E3 during 2012 and 2013. However by E3 just gone, the game has managed to coax a huge seven million players onto its servers, and by the looks of things that number isn’t going to slow down but only increase. The game looks beautiful, the tanks and planes look fantastic & realistic, even down to the custom paint jobs and logos that you can apply yourself.

Bombing Run

If you’re into flying planes, driving tanks or piloting ships, War Thunder will be a game that is up your street. Since is conception the game has constantly been evolving, first it was planes and now they have finally released the tank open beta. Next it promises to be the naval vessels, and with five factions to choose from, the choice will be difficult with whom you choose to play. There is also three differing styles of play which really tailors the game to what you want. Arcade, which is the simplest method of playing but lacks realism and it plays more like Call of Duty. Realistic, which is closer to the real thing, but name tags sometimes appear and you can look in third person. Finally is Simulation, where you can only see in first person (yes even in a cockpit) and every weapon reacts and plays like its real counterpart.

E3
E3 2014

War Thunder blasted its way into E3 2014 by announcing that is was now not only available across four main platforms (Mac OS, Linux, PS4 and a NEW secret, unannounced platform), but that it was about to be available on the OnLive CloudLift service. This subscription based service allows you to download the client to a mobile device and play the game, remotely, via the service’s powerful servers. No other game in the world features this many platforms and this cross-play experience.

The game also managed to break a Guinness World Record back in 2013 by having the most planes in a flight simulation game, which is outstanding with a whopping 303 planes. At E3 2014, Gaijin had managed to up the number of planes to 345, and with the tanks and vehicles included that you can play as, there are over 450 different vehicles you have access too.

Shot down

War Thunder, however, isn’t without its hiccups. At the moment the Tank Open Beta remains unbalanced, and from what I have read on the forums, it has been for sometime. Back during the original Open Beta, the same happened and it appears to be coming from a strange quarter; Russians. The Russian aircraft, back in the original beta, were untouchable and that transferred to some degree into the final game. Now it appears that the Russian tanks are untouchable, and what makes me nervous is that it will happen again. With the developer being Russian though, it may be bias towards its own country, but we’ll never know. The game is also suffering from “Permanent Beta” syndrome which seems to be sweeping, like an uncontrollable disease, across a lot of PC games at the moment.

War Thunder is a game I would love to spend more time on, and if you haven’t played it, go and give it a go. It looks beautiful, it plays smooth and, although it lacks balance within the game, its still worth your time. Hell, just play as Russians if you want the ultimate enjoyable experience; I did.

Pacific Rim News – a sequel, a comic, a TV series!

0

On the 27th of April 2017, man and machine will once more team up to cancel the apocalypse (…again) in the sequel to Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim. The sequel will have Guillermo del Toro helm the director’s chair, as well as have him write the movie with Travis Beacham (who was a co-writer for the first movie), and Zack Penn (whose work includes X2, Alphas and The Avengers).

In an interview with Buzzfeed, Guillermo del Toro gave us a small morsel of information to digest whilst we wait;

The characters I love will return. Raleigh, Mako, Newt, Gottlieb and who knows, maybe even Hannibal Chau – but we are taking them into a fresh territory that will display amazing sights and battles. The first film set the stage and now we’re ready to have a blast.

But wait…there is more!

In a video hosted by Legendary‘s Youtube channel, Guillermo del Toro reveals that there is more than just a sequel on the way – an animated television series is set to be produced, as well as a continuation of the Pacific Rim comic book series (a series which was called Pacific Rim: Tales from Year Zero, and acted as a prequel to the events of the film, and was written by Travis Beacham and supervised by Guillermo del Toro himself).

Details are still thin, and we are unsure of the specifics. Will the comic series continue telling stories of Jaegars who were famous before the events of Pacific Rim? Will the animated series be an original work, and feature cameos of well-known characters from the film?

All we know is that it means – as Guillermo del Toro aptly puts – “more kaijus, more jaegers, kicking each others’ butt”.

Fan Art Feature: Dr. Sam Beckett

0

“And so Doctor Beckett finds himself leaping from life to life, striving to put right what once went wrong, and hoping each time that his next leap will be the leap home…”

And we all know how that ended up! If a show is 20+ years old then I don’t think it really counts as a spoiler. This week’s fan art feature is dedicated to the hero of the legendary Bellisario show, Quantum Leap – Dr. Sam Beckett.

First up is this image from J. R Dunster. Not only is this a beautiful hand drawn portrait but it also shows Sam in one of his best guises – himself! The episodes where Sam goes home were some of the best, with some real heart-wrenching stuff.

Next up, another old school hand drawn image, this pen and ink portrait from ObsidianSerpent. It might seem pretty pretty basic but this is some super skilful work. I love the shading, it reminds me of illustrations from old RPG books.

scott_5_by_obsidianserpent-d6ppoeb
Another old school close-up portrait, this time a very deliberately minimalist digital painting from No-No-Notorious. Great realistic image in a very simple clean style.

_dr__sam_becket_quantum_leap__scott_stewart_bakula_by_no_no_notorious-d6lmdj8

I was pretty surprised when I realised that there actually isn’t that much quality fan art out there for poor Sam. Considering the show is pretty old now, and it’s always had an enthusiastic fanbase I really expected more. I’m going to try to be diplomatic here; I expected more in terms of quality, not quantity. There is a huge amount of awful fan art out there for this show. I think perhaps that’s due to the fact that when the show was at its peak, there wasn’t really the same ability to share large images as easily as it is today, at least when it came to doing it online, and there weren’t the same sort of art sharing communities. So, any fan artists out there, get on it – Dr. Beckett (and Al) need you!

Ok, so given these desperate times, next up we have this design available from McNasty on Redbubble (available as clothing, stickers, phone cases and a bunch of other stuff). Who doesn’t love a nice Shepard Fairey homage? It’s already got me convinced, cause it’s Quantum Leap and it would make me look knowledgeable and arty cause it’s Shepard Fairey. It does look like an autotrace, I doubt the artist slaved long and hard in the studio over this one, but it’s always good to see someone keeping the Quantum Leap Accelerator burning.

For my final image I’ve chosen this digital painting by Eilish. I’m a sucker for good digital art, and this one is really nice. I love the lighting and the detail on her hair. This is the sort of quality art Quantum Leap needs more of!
